EASTON FOUNDATION AND NFAA FOUNDATION AWARD $15,500 ARCHERY SCHOLARSHIPS Easton Sports Development Foundation and the National Field Archery Association Foundation are pleased to announce the Archery Scholarship Recipients for 2012. $15,500 in total scholarships was awarded to 18 student athletes in middle school, high school, and college that compete with either compound or recurve bows. Individual scholarship awards varied from $500 to $2,000. The top scholarship was awarded to Levi Cyr of Falmouth, Maine. Levi attends Southern Maine Community College where he is working towards a degree in Criminal Justice. He was a part of the Jr. USAT Team four different years. He has travelled to Wales, Turkey, Columbia, Porto Rico, and Hungary. Levi earned two World Championship Team Gold medals and numerous other archery awards. In addition to archery, he belongs to the American Society of Welders and has been a Falmouth Volunteer Fire Fighter for four years. “Levi and the other recipients are all outstanding athletes that developed their archery skill in youth programs, and have become seasoned competitive archers. We are pleased to award them scholarships for 2012,” stated Bruce Cull, President, NFAA. NFAA Scholarships were first awarded in 1990 to student athletes that compete in archery and excel in academic and intellectual achievement. The limitations of the original scholarship programs were resolved in 2009 with the creation of the joint NFAA/Easton Foundation Scholarship Program. “The Easton and NFAA Foundations share the goal to support student athletes that compete in archery. We believe these scholarships will help us to develop stronger college archery programs and strengthen future Olympic and World Championship Teams. By combining our respective Foundation programs, we can award more student scholarships, and increase the scholarship levels,” said Greg Easton, President Easton Foundations. The 2009-11 scholarships are funded by an initial $150,000 grant from the Easton Foundation to the Easton-NFAA Foundation Scholarship Program. Future net revenue from the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex, plus scholarship donations from both individuals and companies will be held in an endowment account to fund the scholarships in 2012 and beyond. Dave Gordon, of Gordon Composited, made a large personal contribution to the scholarship endowment fund. Dave stated, “Archery has been a big part of both my personal and business success. I believe the Easton-NFAA Foundation Scholarship program is an outstanding program to support our youth archers, and allows me to give back to the sport I love. Awarding our best archers and student athletes scholarships that allow them to pursue further education while competing in archery will help develop much stronger youth and college archery programs. I encourage everyone that shares my

As dawn breaks over the golf course adjacent to the DoubleTree, outlining trees and targets of the Big Sky Open, I peek out the window of the nine-story hotel and marvel at the dedication target archers have in preparing themselves for competition. In the bare light of day, the sound of arrows hitting bales tells the story about how serious these target archers are with the sport they have chosen. As the sun comes up in the east, the colored targets take on a glow that expands beyond the range and flows into the community. From that window, the neat set-up on a manicured lawn is a beautiful sight to behold and takes my breath away every time. It is, in fact, the 32nd year this event has taken place.
son/UT. Gellenthien, sponsored by Mathews Inc, has programmed himself to compete in events with one goal in mind – to win! Knowing this, he was dubbed as the favorite of this event. The Big Sky Open also welcomed David Rowson and Marie Hulbert from Australia for their first time here. Several archers used the Big Sky Open as a stop in their journey to the World Cup Event being held in Salt Lake City, UT.
Two other scheduled events gave archers some warmcontinued on page 6
A record number of archers from all over the country traveled to the mid-size town of Grand Junction, Colorado (located 30 miles from the Utah border) for this NFAA Pro-Sanctioned archery tournament. Three different sizes of colored targets, yardages from 20 - 65 set in a V-Formation, had archers streaming in opposite directions shooting a total of 20 ends. This is the format for the Big Sky Open three-day weekend, June 15 – 17. This was the first Big Sky Open for the top three men in the pro division. big sky open | continued from page 5 up time and extra cash to line their pockets. Friday evening, the Big Sky Open traditionally kicks off with the “GoForIt” clay pigeon shoot. Competing archers who register for just this event, or two, or all three, try to break the stationary clay pigeons with one shot and hope they get lucky enough to join the “Perfect 50” club. Tony Harbaugh, Senior competitor from Idaho was the only archer on board to break the dry spell of three years. Saturday morning (and Sunday as well), competitors and spectators took a moment to welcome the sound of two young archers, Paige Younger and Brittney Brabec singing the National Anthem in the opening ceremony. AnYouth Winners of Big Sky Open nouncer Linda Marten called out the first group and the real competition was underway. The air was filled with the sound of arrows hitting targets, whistles blowing, groups of archers called to the starting line and friendly conversation. As the day progressed in double-digit heat, the Mathews staff shooters were busy plying their magic to a crowd of onlookers as they aggressively showed no mercy in regard to their fellow competitors. Gellenthien started his day off by leading the pack in the Men’s Championship Division just one-point ahead of Steve Anderson/UT and two in front of Duane Price/WI.
Women and Sr. Men competitors spent their shooting time concentrating hard to qualify a spot in the Championship portion of the tournament while those who didn’t would be flighted. Ten Senior Men qualified sending the rest into Flights and the same happened in the women’s. Does Saturday’s leader go on to take the title the finishing day? More often than not, that is the way it seems to work. Of course, there is some jockeying on down the line, but if the top competitor can keep his/her lead on the first day, the comfort zone they created will usually give them the title and award money they are seeking. So the first day is pretty much important to post a score that will leave others stunned and wondering what they did or will need to do. Tony Harbaugh/ID in the Sr. Men’s Division the first day posted a nine-point deficit over Dee Wilde/ID. In past years, Wilde had pretty much owned the title, so nine points under was devastating. Could he make it up tomorrow? With that being said, the second exciting event to take place is the “Shoot-Down” sponsored by Winners Choice Custom Bowstrings Inc/OR; Kiser Trucking/ Grand Junction; and American Whitetail Inc/IN.
Caught at least a couple of the Flight Winners on camera: Nicole Bassett/ID and Robert Gregg/NE
Starting at 10 yards, the archers from three different categories (Men’s Championship, Men’s Flights, Women’s Flights) centered their focus on the clay pigeons so they could advance to further distances. The five-yard increments started to take their toll at 35 yards. As the archers drop away, the distance gets longer, the clay pigeons smaller and the pressure mounts. In the Men’s Pro Division, all eyes were on Harbaugh, Dick Smith/ CO and Jeremy Terhune/WY who were the final three standing at 60 yards. Smith took a deep breath, shut out his surroundings and fired the final shot at a clay pigeon that resembled a flyspeck in the distance, but won him the privilege to say, “I beat the best of the best!” Smith & Terhune, respectively were 2nd and 3rd.
to the targets and finished strong with an 1108. Thank you, Jeff for competing and becoming Big Sky’s newest Men’s FSL Champion. Seneca Francis/UT had been making a steady climb to the top and in her third year of attending, she mancontinued on page 8
In the Men’s Flights, Justin Howell/CO beat his opponents at 50 yards; while Amber Christensen/ID won the Women’s Division and Jim Marshall/NV won the Men’s Bowhunter. Both scored big at 45 yards. Sunday was the defining day for the Big Sky Open. Here and there was an upset or two, but most stayed true to form. Gellenthien did indeed make Mathews proud of their sponsorship by winning the 2012 Big Sky Open, putting Anderson in second and another Mathew’s archer, Henry Bass in third. Bill Pellegrino, past Big Sky Champion, who placed sixth in the money, said it all about Gellenthien when the Daily Sentinel interviewed him. Quote, “He (Gellenthien) competes all over the world and is probably one of the top five archers. Braden is absolutely the best!” It was exciting to watch Jeff Fabray/CA who is a handicapped archer in a wheel chair. Furthermore, he shoots arrows by releasing the string from his teeth. Jeff runs a busy schedule, but this year, it was an honor to finally see him competing in the Big Sky Open. Fabray is one of the best archers in the U.S. in the Men’s Pro FreeStyle Limited Division. The flat V-Formation range is perfect for handicapped archers and Fabray had no problem making it back and forth from the shooting line

Now back to Dee Wilde. How did he fare? Well, for the 5th time, he managed to overcome the 9 points, add another one and outscore Harbaugh in the final count as well as Don Ward/WI. Just goes to show that it doesn’t pay to under estimate this determined archer by any means and the shouting isn’t over until the fat lady sings. Or as the cliché goes. Thank you to our Signature Club, the Grand Mesa Bowmen. Without the help of these fine Manufacturers and Businesses, the Big Sky Open would not be able to help promote outdoor target archery for all those who love to compete. Their interest is an investment in you, the archer. Thank them as well and remember to use/ purchase their fine products. And to all those who helped put the tournament on, a great big thank you. Your help is appreciated. After the last arrow was shot, the score completed, Braden had this to say about the Big Sky Open. “I loved the format of this tournament. It was unique in the fact that it reminded me of golf with the variation in distances and setup. It is a great tournament to attend.” Thanks to all the archers who attended and competed. TOURNAMENT SITE PRACTICE
larry wise
AND POST TOURNAMENT EVALUATION
INTRODUCTION At the end of my previous article (May/June issue) I made mention of three types of goals. Here they are again. They are important to your tournament site practice routine and for your post-tournament evaluation. SETTING GOALS Take out a piece of paper or find a page in your archery notebook/log and write your goals for the next tournament you plan to shoot. There are three types of goals you can make: performance goals, result-oriented goals or process oriented goals. Result oriented goals are those that focus on where you finish relative to your competitors. An example would be “I want to finish in the top three” or “I want to win”. Performance goals are linked to results also. An example would be “I want to average 50 X’s per round” or “I want to shoot my personal best”. A process goal would be “I want to execute at least 50 out of 60 shots with good back tension”. These types of goals are for the learning archer —that’s just about all of us—who is building form. Most archers should be using this kind of goal setting most of the time. TOURNAMENT SITE PRACTICE Keeping goals in mind: Your goals should be foremost in your mind when you begin practice at the tournament site. Your goal keeps your mental focus on track and will increase your chances of reaching it at the end of the tournament. Once you get to the tournament location you will want to practice. Indoors I recommend shooting three or four warm up ends and then shooting only a half round followed by a short break. Outdoors, shoot fourteen field targets to be sure your marks are correct. No complete games: I caution you against shooting a complete game on the day before the tournament. Affixing an enormous amount of value on the score of a full practice round, I always found, was counterproductive —it got me rethinking my goals and that’s not what you want to do on this day. For example, if I shot really well I got to thinking about shooting a complete & perfect round the next day (a really big task) instead of thinking about shooting a smooth beginning (a smaller manageable task) and letting my preparation take care of the rest. Or, if I shot a lousy score in this practice round I was
in a negative frame of mind and either over anxious or doubting for the next day. If I missed a few shots that’s all I thought about for hours. Instead, focus on getting smooth and relaxed during the two practice ends and first few scoring ends as this has real and positive benefits for your mental attitude. Use this manageable task to get your shooting process functioning well and don’t worry about score. Shooting too much: Don’t shoot too much! Some archers I know always shoot as many practice arrows as they can the day before the tournament. Some of them shoot two full practice rounds or more. This may reduce that built up nervous energy but doesn’t help you for the next day —it may, in fact, wear you out. Having a specific purpose for your practice is much more beneficial and gets you mentally relaxed. This is where your goals come into play—stick to them and don’t get off course at the last minute. Do this and you’ll feel mentally and physically ready for the next day. Consult your log book: Because you’ve recorded your practice scores during the four weeks prior to the continued on page 12

arrow hit the center X then you’ll be wound tighter than a Christmas toy— don’t be that guy. This is the time when you need to see yourself shooting as you did in practice. Imagine being in practice, shooting as smooth as you do there and then run your conscious mental sequence as you execute each shot. This is your best chance for success —it’s no guarantee, only your best chance. It works most of the time and that’s all you can expect since we are “only human”. racking isn’t it? My priority in the two practice That first arrow for score is always a little nerve I could shoot smooth and relaxed during the that so settled ends was always to get my body how I shot the practice arrows than where first few scoring ends – I was more concerned about they hit.
tournament you know your “TRUE” average. Don’t expect to shoot over your average at the tournament. That’s unrealistic. Do expect to shoot equal to or very near your average—that’s realistic. Your game is not going to take a big jump in skill or score just because you arrived at a new location. Yeah, you think you’ll be more focused but don’t forget there will be more “new” things to distract you if you let them. Know your true average and stay realistic in your thinking. TOURNAMENT DAY The first thing I always did the morning of a tournament round was to go for a short jog or a brisk walk. This was my way of getting my body into a more normal rhythm just like at home where I jogged and walked as part of my exercise program. During this time I could think about how relaxed I was feeling and was going to feel when my time to shoot arrived. I could also think about those first practice and scoring ends and getting relaxed, smooth and consistent during them. In other words, I prepared both my body and mind for the start (and only the start) of the tournament. I guarantee that you will be nervous—I always was and still am. Experience taught me to keep my thoughts simple and not worry what 12 Archery Magazine
n
others were thinking about me or what they were doing—they are too busy with their own game to think about you! Experience taught me how my body was going to react and how I could best prepare “ME” for the start of the round and it had nothing to do with what others were doing, saying or thinking. FINAL COUNTDOWN During the last thirty minutes prior to the start of official scoring you will find yourself most vulnerable to “NEGATIVE GOBLINS”. Expect them. Recognize them. Learn to fend them away by retreating into your learned conscious mental thought sequence. Remind yourself that nobody else has prepared as well as you have prepared and that your plan is the best for you. It just doesn’t matter what anyone else does or thinks so focus on getting started just like you have in practice many times. START GAME At the start of the round you need to focus on your two practice ends and making smoother and smoother shots. Don’t worry where they hit—you have to get your body into your “relaxed home practice” kind of feel for each shot. Then the first scoring arrows will be as smooth as can be expected. If you focus on making each practice
November/December 2012
MID-ROUND SHOOTING In the middle of the scoring round you’ll need to remind yourself that your intensity level may fall slightly. Protect against that happening. Pull out your 3x5 card with your mental thought sequence on it and read it before each end. This will help you chase away those extraneous thoughts that creep in after the first few ends of scoring. It also helps you keep you physical effort elevated so you don’t let your posture slump preventing your lungs from getting full oxygen supply to your muscles. Don’t worry about what others may think of you as you frequently read your 3x5 card—they have nothing to do with your game. Read the card often, stay with your plan and make the others wish they had a plan (remember, most of them don’t!).
Keeping simple but good notes always pays dividends. You save lots of time not repeating things you’ve already tried and you can track your skill level as training progresses.
END GAME These ends are no different than the others. They count the same as the others and require the exact same
When it’s all over you have only to write the score totals. Save any evaluatio n of your performance or score for later. Usually the trip home is a good time to reflect on how you did and what you have to do to get ready for the next tournament on your list.
physical and mental effort, no more and no less. If it’s the first of two days, remind yourself that today’s final few ends will get you to HALF-WAY in the tournament because there’s another round to shoot tomorrow. Don’t put any extra weight on the final few ends of the round. Read the 3x5 card and BREATHE!!!! If it’s the last few ends of the final round then you must remind yourself that they are worth the same as the previous twenty or thirty ends. The effort you used to complete every end up to this point needs only to be repeated. Nothing special has to be done; the target will be the same size and the same distance. You have to repeat to yourself that what you have done thus far in practice and in the tournament is all you need to do at the end. Read the card, breathe, review your plan and then execute each shot with the confidence that you will use the form that got you to this point and are willing to take whatever score you get. In other words, shoot the form you practiced with confidence. If you execute your final few shots with the form you practiced you can only feel that inner pride that comes with a job well done. How can you do more? You can’t aim harder, think harder or shoot more perfect shots.
You can only shoot the same shot you’ve practiced over and over—that’s all that is possible for you to do! So read the card, breathe and do it! MESOCYCLE PLANNING CHART

now just remind yourself that you did the best you could for today! When you do decide to make a tournament evaluation be sure to get out your written list of goals. If you had a result goal how did you measure against it? Did you match it or exceed it? Or did you fall short? If you matched or exceeded your goals then you’ve earned the right to be proud and pat yourself on the back a time or two. Don’t forget to come back down to earth because you have the next mesocycle to plan and I’m sure there’s something to work on. If you fell short of your result objective don’t feel too down. You are not a bad person and your life will not be in the toilet because of it! Get that stuff out of your head immediately and start determining why you fell short so you can begin planning your next mesocycle to correct the problem and/or overcome the challenge that lies ahead. Be honest about what the problem is and how to fix it, make your plan and get on with it. Now make a written plan for your next mesocycle and set written goals for the next tournament. This is all part of the mind game. Remember, the committed student has a notebook with all of his/her info in it along with goals and training plan. Use it often!
MESOCYCLE CHART: The training you do in the final four-to-six week mesocycle preceding a tournament is critical to your success. The final week of this mesocycle should contain lots of scoring rounds just like in the tournament so plan that first then plan backwards from there.
POST TOURNAMENT EVALUATION Well, the final shot is released and your tournament is now officially over. Don’t evaluate it now; give it a break for a few hours at least. It’s hard to be objective at this point—unless you’ve won—so back off for awhile before you draw any conclusions about your performance or place of finish. For
Begin your training plans with a full twelve-month calendar. Mark the tow or three most important tournaments you want to shoot and plan backwards from each because you always know what needs to be done the past week before the tournament.
WHAT ABOUT A COACH? Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down with someone who watched you shoot and review your last tournament continued on page 50

uring July 25 through July 29, Mechanicsburg Archers of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, hosted the NFAA 2012 Outdoor Field Championship. An enthusiastic group of 499 archers graced the five world-class archery ranges at the club. Many outstanding scores were posted, but most of the talk among the archers seemed to center on the high degree of professionalism that was exhibited by the host club— not only in the way that the ranges were prepared for the tournament, but by providing everything else that was necessary for a memorable archery experience! n

Dear fellow archers: It has been brought to my attention that an error was made regarding the March 2012 Mid-Atlantic Indoor Tournament results. Mrs. Lelia Nelson, WA-XO-BE Archers, NJ, won First Place in the Championship Flight of Female Master Senior Freestyle Limited. I apologize for any inconvenience this error may have caused. Seventy-three competitors enjoyed the hospitality of Eutaw Forest Archers (Waldorf, MD) and fine shooting conditions at the June 16-17 Mid-Atlantic Outdoor tournament. At the June 15th Mid-Atlantic Section Annual Business Meeting the Mid-Atlantic Directors approved the 2013 tournament Schedule. On March 2 & 3, 2013 the Mid-Atlantic Indoor tournament will be held at 15 sites across the six state Mid-Atlantic region. The format is the same as the previous six Mid-Atlantic Indoor tournaments, a “Better-of-Two NFAA Indoor 300 Rounds”. “Guest Participants” (Non NFAA members who may participate in Sectional tournaments but NOT win awards) will be allowed at host sites in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and NOT allowed at host sites in New Jersey and Virginia. The Mid-Atlantic Outdoor tournament will be held on June 22 & 23, 2013 at Black Knight Bowbenders, Jackson, New Jersey. A 28 target Hunter and 14 target Animal Round will be shot on Saturday. A 28 target Field Round will be shot on Sunday. —Dave Hryn, Councilman continued on page 40 scores, tournament info and more at www.fieldarchery.com 39

Easton Foundations National Field Archery Association Foundation
EASTON FOUNDATIONS NATIONAL FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION JOINT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 1. Deadline for 2012 scholarship applications to be received at the NFAAF Office in Yankton is December 31, 2012. The winners will be announced at the World Archery Festival Vegas Shoot, February 2013. 2. The NFAA Scholarship Committee will review and rank the applications, place each applicant into the appropriate category and present their suggestions to the Joint Scholarship Approval Committee for their approval. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee, consisting of two Directors of the National Field Archery Association Foundation and two Directors of the Easton Foundations, will make a joint decision on winners and the final amounts for each scholarship. 3. The NFAA National Office will notify all applicants if their application was denied or approved, and the amount of the scholarship. If approved, it will also describe the procedure for the scholarship payment. 4. For all scholarships greater than $500, the recipient will receive an Archery Activity Report form that must be completed and sent to the NFAA National Office twice a year, showing their archery activities during the year. Applicant Requirements The maximum amount of all scholarships for the first three years will be $50,000 per year. The goal is to provide 50% of the scholarships to recurve archers and 50% to compound archers. A secondary goal will be to split the scholarships equally between men & women. • Applicants must be a member of the NFAA or the NAA/USA Archery. • Applicants that are not graduating from high school in the current year (JOAD, NASP, junior high, or high school freshman/sophomore archers) may apply. n For this group, any approved scholarships will be held by the Foundation until the student notifies the Foundation they are graduating from high school, and the name of the qualified school they plan to attend. • High school applicants must be applying to be full time students at a two or four year college/university or a technical training college (these are considered qualified schools). n Applicant must maintain a 2.0 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year. • College applicants must be full time students at either a two or four year college or university. 46 Archery Magazine

n Applicant must maintain a 2.5 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year. Scholarship recipients must compete in archery during the entire academic year. Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college may apply for training grants.
Scholarship Levels 1. JOAD, NASP, Junior High, High School, Junior College or Trade College Students: Eligible for $500 scholarships. 2. College Freshmen, Sophomore, or Juniors: Scholarship amounts will vary between $500-2,500 based on the archer’s accomplishments, future competition plans, and the following: a. Applicant is attending college, participates in the college archery club program, and is shooting competitively. b. Applicant is attending a college that does not have an archery club program, but the student is shooting competitively on their own. i. If the student starts a new archery club program at their school, this will be a major factor to receive a scholarship the next year. ii. Students that are more successful starting archery clubs will be considered for greater scholarship amounts. 3. If the Applicant has made the current Olympic, PanAm, or Other International Team through the USA Archery selection process: Scholarship amounts will vary between $2,500-5,000 based on the archer’s accomplishments and future competition plans. a. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee may approve a ‘training grant’ for Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college, and allow them to use the grant to pay for training, and competition travel expenses without needing to be spent on the archer’s education. (Though this situation is expected to be rare, it will allow top US archers to apply for financial support.) 4. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee has the discretion to create a larger scholarship for an extraordinary applicant (up to $20,000) depending on specontinued on page 51

tournament site practice | larry wise continued from pg. 13 performance? You bet it would. That person is called a coach, and when the tournament is over they can be really helpful in putting your performance into perspective. They can keep you from being too high or too low. A good coach can help you cut through the emotions surrounding the tournament conditions and results. Such a view is essential in planning your next step so that you don’t waste time chasing something that wasn’t really a problem—you just thought it was. A coach with skills related to the mental game can help keep you in a more balanced state of mind and that will short cut the path to your next set of goals. CONCLUSION The basic ideas presented in this article are not new ideas by any stretch of the imagination. They are, however, effective for those who choose to put them into practice. Your job is to put them into practice. I know that’s not so easy—all you can do is try. I learned a lot by trial and error without even so much as a hint of what to do. You’ll be way ahead of that with a good starting plan. With a good plan you will be able to make it all happen with less effort than it took me. Just following some of what has been presented in this article will help you work “smarter” when getting ready for your next event. Good luck doing it. n
