Shooter of the Year (SOY) points were calculated by adding final scores from all 5 SOY events; plus the final x count for The Vegas Shoot, NFAA Indoor Nationals, and the First Dakota Classic. Each x will be counted as an additional point.

For Professional divisions only, a podium bonus was awarded for the top 3 scores at all 5 events in the male and female category. (3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, and 1 point for 3rd place)

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING IN NFAA TOURNAMENTS?

My first NFAA tournament was in 2004. Formally known as, “Stanislawski’ Shoot (current: Dakoda Classic)

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE UP ARCHERY?

My older brother Robert ‘Shrimp’ Punzalan

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THE MOVE FROM LOCAL TOURNAMENTS TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS?

Figured it was a step in the right direction to improve my skills, shoot more often, and meet new folks

HOW DO YOU TRAIN FOR A TOURNAMENT?

First step is to make sure my equipment is timed, tuned, and sighted-in to the best of my ability (eliminates a need for excuses). Next, I focus my attention on shooting form, sight-picture, and shot execution (both physically and mentally).

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ARCHERS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A TOURNAMENT?

On your first National tournament, the most important thing to do is to: “Have fun”. Shoot like you practice…

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE EXPERIENCE OVER THE PAST YEAR THAT STICKS OUT AS MEMORABLE?

Yes, having my GT Nine.3 arrow ‘Robin-hooded’ at 45 yards with an Easton X10 arrow during Outdoor Nationals. Arrow(s) was dead in the ‘X’ ring.

This wouldn’t have been made possible if it wasn’t for my brother, ‘Tim Thomas’ who performed field maintenance on my bow for a stripped screw on my cam module.

I have two ‘favorite tournaments’: Outdoor Nationals: I love the ‘mental’ aspect of shooting multiple arrows for score…

Marked 3D Nationals: Straight Arrow Bowhunters puts on a ‘Fantastic’ shoot! This shoot should be on Everyone’s ‘bucket-list’ because it is so much fun and camaraderie for the entire Family and/or Friends.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING IN NFAA TOURNAMENTS?

I have been competing in NFAA tournaments for the last 4 years.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE UP ARCHERY?

My school had a shooting team and I wanted to give it a try. We shot rifles, shotguns and archery. And after shooting on the team for a while I ended up really enjoying archery, and I really wanted to become competitive with it.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THE MOVE FROM LOCAL TOURNAMENTS TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS?

My first tournament was actually a national tournament, it was the Lancaster Classic. I really wanted to try a tournament, and everyone said that was a lot of fun. So I kind of jumped in head first.

HOW DO YOU TRAIN FOR A TOURNAMENT?

I practice regularly everyday, and practice on the targets and distances I plan on shooting in the next tournament.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ARCHERS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A TOURNAMENT?

My best advice to archers who have not been to a tournament, is to enjoy it. Often times we get so worried about everything going on around us. We get too focused on score or who is watching, rather than just enjoying the moment. So my best advice is to just have fun, especially if it’s your first one.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE EXPERIENCE OVER THE PAST YEAR THAT STICKS OUT AS MEMORABLE?

My most memorable experience was shooting field for the first time at Field Nationals, during the National Roundup. I was doing well my first day until I missed a few times because I missed my sight. So my second day I really tried to stay focused and stay strong in my shots to try to come back. I felt really good about day two, so when it was time for the animal round I focused on making one shot at a time. And to my surprise, I ended up in second, which was pretty cool considering it was my first time shooting field.

My favorite tournament was definitely 3D Nationals hosted by Break the Barriers! I really enjoy 3D archery and that tournament just took it to a whole new level. The angles of the targets, the location, and the layout of the course was all just incredible! It was definitely like nothing I have shot before, and it was just all around a lot of fun!

World Champion Archers are Grateful for the Opportunity to Compete in Yankton

Yankton kicked off the new year, with a new tournament - the inaugural “2021 Rushmore Rumble” - February 12-14, 2021. This first-time tournament attracted more than seven-hundred archers from forty-seven states, including Hawaii and Alaska, and four foreign countries. The excitement and popularity of the event was spurred on by tournament cancellations and restrictions, due to COVID-19, across the world.

years old, participated for a chance to win more than $75,000 in cash prizes, but more than anything, these competitors were simply excited to have a chance to get back on the range and participate in the sport that they love.

3-time Olympic Archer and the current top-ranked recurve archer in the world, Brady Ellison had great things to say about Yankton and the tournament. “It’s amazing that this tournament took place. As professional archers we are starving right now, there are no tournaments taking place, so to throw an event like this together on such short notice, and to have the turnout [that it did] just shows that everyone wants to compete.” When asked how important these tournaments are for his Olympic preparation Ellison said, “Every competition helps, it doesn’t matter if it’s indoor or outdoor, they all help. This is the first live tournament we’ve competed in, in the last six months, so hopefully we are able to get in a couple more, before the [Olympic] games.”

Paige Pearce, a five-time World Champion Compound Archer and member of Team USA Archery talked about what the Rushmore Rumble meant to her, “It means a lot [that Yankton is able to host tournaments like the Rushmore Rumble], this is what I love to do, but this is also my job, and having all tournaments shut down and not being able to compete has been different, so Yankton being able to host an event like this is awesome. This is the one place that we know that when they schedule an event, it’s actually going to happen.” When asked to share her thoughts about Yankton, she said, “I love Yankton, I’m from a small town so it reminds me a lot of home, but I’ve also been coming here since I was a little kid - like ten years old, so this is one of those places that I’ve been [coming to] so many years that it feels like home. [Yankton] is really cool and different from a lot of other places we go, because it’s a small town feel and the community steps up, jumps in and gets involved. Hotels have signs when you drive by that say “welcome archers” and that doesn’t always happen everywhere you go.”

Stephan Hansen, a five-time World Champion Compound Archer from Denmark, expressed his fondness of the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center, “I’ve been competing in Yankton almost every year since 2015, the facility is just perfect, the lighting is very nice for us I am very grateful to have the opportunity to come to Yankton and compete, it is perfect.”

The NFAA Foundation President, and NFAA Executive Director, Bruce Cull stated, “After the decision had been made to postpone the Vegas Shoot this year, we recognized that there were many archers who were itching for an opportunity to get out and compete. We are honored and grateful to be able to provide that for them.” Cull added, “We are thankful

that our state and city officials support us in our effort to bring visitors to our community at a time that has been difficult for everyone in the sports and tourism industries. The safety of our participants, is our number one priority and we took extra precautions, following CDC recommendations, and city ordinances to ensure a fun and safe event!” According to Cull, “Yankton is going to benefit tremendously in 2021 by welcoming these athletes to compete at our facility. A lot of the country is still dealing with very strict policies and guidelines that logistically prevent us from hosting the tournaments elsewhere, so we are excited to be able to bring that economic impact home to Yankton.”

Virtual Basics

BASICS

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the NFAA Foundation has made the decision to change the format for the 2021 Vegas Shoot. The Flight and Junior divisions will compete virtually allowing them to shoot at any 20-yard range in the world while still competing for cash prizes and scholarships.

1. Archers must register via nfaausa.sport80.com. Registration fees are $75 for Flight Divisions and $50 for Junior Divisions.

2. Archers will compete for cash prizes and scholarships.

1. Flight divisions will compete for cash prizes. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each flight will receive a guaranteed payout. The additional 5 places from each flight will be drawn in a lottery to receive cash prizes. The lottery will be live-streamed on April 15 from the South Point Hotel & Casino.

2. Junior divisions will compete for scholarships. Additional scholarships will be awarded based on essay and artwork contests for each age division. Click here to learn more.

3. Collegiate archers may register for the “Collegiate Individual & Team Competition” add- on. Archers will compete for scholarships and team prizes. Scores from the regular competition (Virtual and Championship) will be used to decide the collegiate results. Click here to learn more.

3. All archers will have from March 12-April 12, 2021 to complete three (x3) 30-arrow Vegas rounds for a total of 90 arrows or 900 possible points.

4. Rounds may be shot in any combination of days or times as long as all scores are submitted by April 12, 2021.

5. Archers must shoot each round in a scoring group of 2 or 3 other event participants (must all be registered virtual participants). Scoring groups must consist of 3 or 4 registered participants.

6 Archers may shoot their rounds at ANY 20 Yard (60 Ft.) indoor or outdoor range. No range certification is required. Are you a club, shop, or range and want to get involved? Click here to learn more.

7. Starting March 8, 2021, archers will receive an email with event scoring instructions and a downloadable copy of their official scorecard. Archers should register at least 2 days (48 hours) prior to shooting to allow time for processing.

8. Archers will be required to submit their scores through BOTH of the following methods:

1. Archers will submit scores electronically on the Ianseo scoring app. Electronic scoring can be done on an individual’s smartphone or tablet. Assistance can be requested for archers that do not have access to a device. (Android, Apple)

2. Archers will be provided a PDF copy of their scorecard to print. After completing all three (x3) rounds, archers will submit the following items: clear photo of their scorecards; photo of their target(s) from each round; names and target numbers of additional archers in their scoring group(s). Scorecards and scoring groups will be verified by headquarters staff against the electronic scoring. Electronic scores will be unofficial until they are verified.

9. All 2021 virtual participants will be guaranteed a spot in the 2022 Vegas Shoot at the South Point Hotel & Casino.

REGISTER AS A LOCATON

Clubs, shops, or ranges are encouraged to host a Vegas Shoot - Virtual event. Clubs/shops have the ability to plan their own “events” at their preferred date/time within the March 12-April 12 timeline. Clubs/shops do not need to formally register, but by filling out the form below, we are able to promote your location as a “virtual location” to archers so they have the option to shoot the event at your range.

Virtual Basics

How do I promote my Vegas Shoot - Virtual event?

• Clubs/shops have the ability to promote their event by signing up as a “Registered Virtual Location”. Registered locations will be published here to encourage archers to shoot at their local range. Club/ shops can provide event details including format (e.g., league style, stand-alone event over a week/ weekend, multiple weekends, walk-ins, etc), contact information, pricing, etc.

• NFAA will supply logos/flyer information that clubs/shops can use to advertise and promote their location.

Do I receive payment for archers that participate at my range or event?

• Clubs/shops have the option to charge their traditional range fees (e.g., a daily shooting fee, range fee, membership fee, etc) or may charge an additional shooting fee for hosting a stand-alone event.

• Certified clubs, shops, or ranges are eligible to receive a $10 rebate for each archer that participates at their range or event. To qualify for the rebate, a club/shop must:

• Provide proof of club/shop membership or certification with an official archery organization (i.e. NFAA, World Archery or IFAA national federation, USA Archery, NASP, 4-H, etc).

• Submit a copy of each archer’s name and completed scorecard (paper or digital copy).

How do archers register for my location?

• Clubs, shops, or ranges will provide contact information on their “Registration Virtual Location” listing. Archers will communicate directly with the host club, shop, or range to determine shooting times and dates. Archers do NOT need to select a location on their Vegas Shoot - Virtual registration.

How do I submit archers’ scores?

• Archers will receive electronic scorecards, name tags, shooter bags, etc. upon registering through the event website. It is the archer’s responsibility to provide a printed copy of their scorecard and to submit their scores electronically.

Scoring Quick Guide

Electronic scoring is becoming an offical form of scoring along with the paper scorecards and will be used at most NFAA events. Please take the time to review this Scoring Quick Guide to help you become familiar with this app for future events.

Step 1: Download the ScoreKeeper app.

IANSEO ScoreKeeper can be downloaded from Google Play (Android) or the Apple AppStore (iPhone or iPad). Please note: this is the only step that can be done prior to arriving at your shooting location.

Step 2: Scan Your Unique QR Code

You will be provided an official scorecard via email (for The Vegas Shoot - Virtual) or in person (for all other in-person tournaments). Please have it available for the following steps.

1. Click the Scan QR button and scan one of the square QR codes located at the bottom of the scorecard (Day 1 - left side; Day 2 - right side); please pay attention to the distance (1st or 2nd round/distance = 1st or 2nd day).

2. When the QR code has successfully been scanned, a grey screen will pull up your competition details.

Double-check that the information matches the scorecard and displays the correct day, then click Save and then Yes to confirm the values.

Step 3: Score Your Arrows

The scoring entry screen will now be displayed. Information regarding the current end, archer information, and target type is clearly displayed.

The arrow values are entered using the larger colored buttons. You will enter your arrow values end-by-end.

The command buttons at the bottom of the screen have functions to show the scorecard view, clear all arrow values, or progress to the next archer (for these specific events such as The Vegas ShootVirtual, Next Archer means going to the summary and closing the current end).

At this point, you can change scorecard (Edit Scores) or advance to the next end by clicking Continue.

If a single arrow value needs to be changed, that arrow can be selected by clicking on it (will highlight red) and then select the corrected value.

Continue scoring until you have scored all ends. Once your scoring is complete, you can exit the app or select Menu - Setup to return to the setup screen to scan the next QR code and score the next day or another archer.

collegiate opportunities the vegas

The National Field Archery Association Foundation will award over $7,000 in scholarships to collegiate participants at the 2021 Vegas Shoot - Virtual or Championship.

The Collegiate Competition is open to all full-time students at a two- or four-year university or technical school. Current high school students are not eligible.

To be eligible, collegiate student-athletes must pay the $25 collegiate add-on during registration.

Scores from the regular competition will be used to decide the collegiate results. Archers can participate in any Flight or Championship division for the 2021 Vegas Shoot but will be ranked for collegiate purposes in divisions of Male and Female - Compound, Recurve, Bowhunter, and Recurve Barebow.

The top three student-athletes in each division will receive scholarships valued at $300, $200 and $100, respectively, for use towards higher education.

Schools will also be ranked on a cumulative team score. The top score from each school in each of the equipment divisions (Compound, Recurve, Bowhunter, and Recurve Barebow - Male or Female) will be used to create the cumulative team score. The top three schools will receive $750, $500 and $300, respectively, for their team or club.

Junior scholarship opportunities

The National Field Archery Association Foundation, in partnership with the Easton Foundations, will award $18,000 in scholarships to junior archers that participate in the 2021 Vegas Shoot - Virtual to use toward higher education.

Junior participants will have two ways to qualify for the archery scholarships:

1. Archers will compete for scholarships for 1st ($500), 2nd ($300), and 3rd ($200) place in each junior division (Cub, Youth, Young Adult - Male and Female - Compound and Recurve).

2. Archers may apply for the Junior Scholarship Contest by submitting an archery themed essay or artwork. Applicants will compete for two (2) $500 scholarships to one male and one female archer in each age division (Cub, Youth, Young Adult) and each medium (essay or artwork) to use toward higher education.

Applicants must compete in the 2021 virtual Vegas Shoot. Top entries will be chosen by an independent panel. Winners will be announced and awarded by April 30, 2021. Winning entries will be published on thevegasshoot.com and in Quarter 2 of Archery Magazine.

Olympics. The reporter asked, “How does it feel to lose the gold medal?” Vic replied, “I didn’t lose the gold. I shot good and won the silver. He shot better and won the gold.”

In his youth, Ryan Day had been shooting archery for only five months, but there he was competing in the NFAA Indoor National Target Championship in the cub division. During the tournament, I would periodically stop by and inquire, “Are you running your mental program and shooting perfect form?”

“Yes, I’m doing everything the same as I do in practice,” he would reply. When the tournament was over, Ryan had shot a 600 with 118 X’s and had set a new national record.

At the conclusion of the tournament, some archers were very pleased with their performance, but many were upset. Why were they dissatisfied? Think of the last time you were frustrated after finishing a competition. Was it because you did not win? It probably was not. You were disappointed because you knew that you had the ability to shoot a better game than you did. Your tournament scores fell well short of your practice scores.

Winning a tournament is nothing more than putting extra icing on a cake. The real winning is for the archer to shoot the best possible tournament that he or she is capable of achieving. I like the way our son Vic, a three-time Olympian, responded to a reporter after a gold medal match at the

A true champion can take the same scores from the practice range and reproduce them on the tournament field. Sometimes you may win when performing poorly. Another time you may shoot great and lose because someone shot better. The most important thing is that you execute the best shots you can possibly produce. If that score is not high enough to take home a trophy and that is what you want, then you need to raise the degree of your skill. Increasing your practice time or concentration level might do this for you. However, if you feel that you have reached a plateau and are not going forward, then seek help from a professional coach.

You have to be a good shot to win tournaments. Good form and consistent shot execution are a must. This is learned on the practice field while shooting at blank bales and bullseye targets. No matter how great a shot you are, it will not yield success if you cannot duplicate that shot on the tournament field. Why is it that many people who are excellent archers have trouble taking their skills from the practice level to the competition level? The two main obstacles preventing this transfer are anxiety and loss of concentration. Anxiety is probably the biggest culprit in causing most archers to perform below their potential. They start thinking about the tournament in terms of, “I hope I can win,” “I have to beat my buddy or I will never hear the end of it,” “What will people think if I don’t do well?” or “I know I cannot drop any points if I want to win.”

Once a series of these unproductive thoughts start, they quickly engulf the thinking process and an archer cannot concentrate on shooting good form. Such anxiety also produces tense

muscles. This is why I stress the importance of a relaxed, trouble-free form. An archer must stay relaxed in order to shoot effective form. So how do you stop anxiety from growing like a “wildfire?” You do it the same way that you would handle any unwanted crisis. First, try to not let it get started. Secondly, if it does begin, get it stopped quickly. Anxiety is caused by what you are thinking; therefore, stop any harmful ideas from entering your mind! Your brain cannot concentrate on two thought patterns at once, so replace those anxious ideas with images of you shooting a perfect shot. The first few times you try this thought replacement, you will discover that it helps some. The more that you use it and incorporate it into your archery program, the more you will be able to relax and focus on shooting with good form.

Concentration is nothing more than the thought process staying directed at executing a perfect shot. It sounds very simple and it is … as long as you do not allow other ideas to enter into your mind. How do some archers shoot the highest scores of their lives in the big tournaments? Each shot is very important, so they concentrate harder to make each one with the best form that they can muster. The archers that I coach have set or broken over 450 national and world records. Most of these records were the highest scores they had ever produced, including practice scores. They concentrated and made sure every shot was with precise form. This is why it is vital for you to shoot every practice shot the same way as you would in a tournament. Then, when you are in a competition, remember to execute every shot the same as you do on the practice field. Staying disciplined and following this mental program will make you a winner because you will be performing to the best of your ability.
