Southern SECTION - Lee Gregory

In Texas, hunting season at the ranch began the most exciting time of the year and started November 1st. Archery season began a month before that, so every year my oldest brother-in-law who was already into archery was able to start hunting earlier than my wife’s brother and myself. My father-in-law suggested that we start shooting a bow so we could give him some competition. I immediately bought a bow and headed home. At this time we lived on the coast in Corpus Christi, Texas. If I remember correctly my first bow was a Bear Kodiak hunting bow; 50/55 lbs.

My first day upon arrival at the Archery range some guy walked up to my car and said, “What style do you shoot?” I had no idea. He looked at my bow that had one pin attached to it and said, “You’re freestyle, just like that guy over there on the practice range.” He had a recurve, check It sights, long stabilizer and a release. I guessed that was important information an archer should know.

After that I purchased 2 more recurves and then an Olympus compound that was made in Houston,Texas. Then in 1975 I went to a PSE that just came on the market and won my first State Championship, beating both my brothers-in-law and Bobby Hunt, which were about the best shooters in Texas at that time. Around this same time I was elected the Club President and then Field Governor for South Texas.

For several years my wife, her sister, my two brothers-in-law and I were well know in Texas Archery. We were known as those “Damn Brothers-in Law”. Working for Xerox, I was moved back to Central Texas to Georgetown and it was while I was working on Ft. Hood military base at Killeen, Texas that I first met Ellis Gibson who had a small archery shop there. He talked me into going and shooting the Tournament in Vegas. From that time on and up until his death, I considered Ellis one of the best archers in the world. He taught me more about arrows, tuning, timing a bow, and form than I could ever have learned on my own.

My Xerox job moved me back to Austin after about 7 months at Ft. Hood. At this time, two guys and I bought an archery shop in Austin around 1982. The Hoyt Rep put me on their staff and I shot Hoyts until around 2006. In 1985 I left Xerox and opened my own printing business in Georgetown, Texas and had to give up the shop and really work for my living. The first thing that had to go was my time spent shooting.

In 2006 I had surgery on my left shoulder and because of that I just couldn’t hold the bow steady and the Doctor said that was as good as it was going to be. So, I thought about shooting left handed. I called Rick Gilley in Oklahoma, since he had to switch over at one time, and he said it would take around 2 years to get back to the level I wanted to compete. Dang! I started shooting a Geniss compound at a bale about 5 feet away to get my left arm strong enough. So while I was trying to figure out what to do and how to do it, someone mentioned shooting Barebow. That’s when I met David Hughes and I was hooked. And of course, my goal in life became trying to beat him. Now I know some people think Barebow is the first step to quitting, but I’ve never looked back. I have enjoyed the comaraderie of the Barebow Fraternity and cherish my lifelong friendships.

I planned on mastering Barebow and then moving to another style and then another style, but I have not mastered Barebow yet and probably never will. During all this time shooting Freestyle for almost 32 years and now Barebow I have been fortunate enough to win numerous tournaments--from my first State Championship, to Sectional awards, to National awards, indoor and outdoors, and IFAA and the Senior Olympics.

During all this I have also been involved in the political operations of the organization. I have served as Club President, State Field Governor, Editor of the state newsletter, NFAA State Director, and I’m currently the state tournament director and the Southern Councilman. More important than the shooting itself, has been the obligation I have felt in serving to keep archery alive and thriving for future generations. A lot of time and work goes on behind the scenes and many people dedicate themselves to this important service. Some people play golf, pool, baseball, or bowl, but I got involved in archery in 1972 and I’ve never looked back. I’ve been so lucky to have a family that understood and allowed me the time to put into this sport. I can truly say if I were ever in need of help any place in the United States, I could find someone that I knew and could count on to help because of my time in archery. The rewards of archery are many, but the friendships and the satisfaction of service and achievement are those I cherish.

In 2005 I was Honored to be elected to the Texas Hall of Fame. I realize at my age and after two major set backs with medical procedures I think I can still make a differnce to someone and that I can still shoot a winning score. I’m retired now and I made a promise to myself I would exercise to shoot my bow and shoot my bow to exercise.

Shooters of the year paige pearce

Shooter of the Year (SOY) points were calculated by adding final scores from all 5 SOY events; plus the final x count for The Vegas Shoot, NFAA Indoor Nationals, and the First Dakota Classic. Each x will be counted as an additional point.

For Professional divisions only, a podium bonus was awarded for the top 3 scores at all 5 events in the male and female category. (3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, and 1 point for 3rd place). If an archer has competed in a Professional or Adult/Senior Championship division in 2022, they are considered a Professional for the Shooter of the Year awards.

WINNERs

The NFAA is excited to announce three winners for the Big Idea Contest! Members were asked to submit their best ideas for growing the sport of archery on behalf of their local NFAA club or shop. Nearly 100 ideas were received and narrowed down to a Top 10 by a qualified panel of judges. NFAA members then voted on their favorites and helped to select the winners. The winning clubs received a grant to put toward growing archery in their area. “I am grateful that I can help others experience the passion and introduce them to a discipline that only Archery can initiate. It’s a good place to be when you’re Archery strong all day long!” exclaimed Mike McQueary, winner of the First Place prize.

Congratulations to all winners and thank you to everyone for participating in the inaugural Big Idea Contest!

Create a National Competition Where States Select a Team and Compete for Top NFAA State Awards

Create a progressive tournament starting at the state level to build state teams. In the end, each state will send their top shooters in every NFAA division to a national tournament where the state team will combine scores and compete for the nation’s top state. At the state level a Vegas 450, NFAA 300, Outdoor Target, and a Field Round will be shot adding up the scores at the end of the season to determine who will be on the state team. On a national level all four disciplines would be shot in a 4-to-5-day tournament consisting of the state qualifiers to determine the top state. All rounds will be shot using NFAA rules. A facility big enough to handle all disciplines would be needed.

This would benefit the sport by each team getting spotlights from social media, word of mouth and possibly even televised media for competing for their state and then would draw a lot of attention to the sport.

NFAA NATIONAL FIELD CHAMPION - BODIE TURNER

We got together with NFAA Professional Archer, Bodie Turner, after his win at the NFAA National Field Championships in Enola, PA. Take a look at some of his answers to our questions!

How did you prepare for the NFAA National Field Championships this year?

I made sure my bows were ready, they were tuned well enough and they shot well enough. I made sure everything was level to make sure I didn’t get any unknown misses.

How does it feel to break a national record?!

It was good. I’ve been shooting really well the last couple rounds, and in practice I’ve been under the national record so I knew I could do it. I was confident in it. My goal was to shoot 560 with 100X and that’s what I ended up doing.

You also won the event! How does that feel?

It also good, because I’ve been practicing a lot. It came down to the last target - [Gaius Carter and I] were tied on the last target.

How does it feel now to win two big events, especially after The Vegas Shoot being the first big win?

It feels good! I’ve been practicing a lot and I’ve been shooting scores that are needed in practices. It feels good to be able to do it and in a bigger setting too.

What’s your favorite part about field archery?

It’s by far my favorite type of archery. I don’t 100% know why; it’s just

the most enjoyable to shoot. It’s nice to go out and walk the course and shoot arrows and have fun.

What would you say is the most challenging part about field archery? Probably the rules. There’s a lot of rules you have to make sure you’re up on. That’s the main thing.

As an upcoming young archer, do you have advice for other young archers that are just starting out?

Make sure you’re having fun. Make sure you have a good shot process and you’re happy with what you’re doing.

TOURNAMENT NERVES -- YOUR WINNING EDGE

develop a strong mental program. Your mind is the source of your anxiety and the manager of this energy. Properly trained and used, it will give you that slight edge that makes you a winner. Unchecked, it will keep you on the sidelines watching others collect the trophies and awards.

The first step is to try to relax. Take a deep breath and do some simple stretching exercises to relieve tension build-up. Take command of your thinking process and the nervousness. Use the benefits of sharpened awareness to your advantage.

Over the years, I have watched people nail the bullseye again and again during practice…almost as if they were invincible. Then in the face of an actual tournament, their scores would plummet to fourth or fifth place. Were the winners that much better? I doubt it. In most competitions, the difference between the top score and being “out of the money” is only a few points, generally less than five percent of the possible total. A typical fifth-place archer can consistently shoot first place scores in a practice setting.

Only a few archers ever shoot as well in a tournament as they do in practice. This is true whether they are on the crowded line of an indoor venue or in a spacious outdoor event. Why? Archers who are flexible and can perform equally well in practice and in tournament settings have learned to control their nerves.

All competitors, including archers, get anxious. This isn’t the problem. The difficulty arises when you can’t control the effects of stress. Being nervous can actually be beneficial, as the adrenaline charge makes your senses sharper and improves your natural reaction time. Your muscles are more responsive and your performance improves. The trick is to harness this powerful energy source and make it work in a positive manner for you.

How do you accomplish this? Work to

Second, think positive thoughts about the shot in front of you. Don’t let negative thinking or concern about the competition cloud your mind. Visualize the arrow going into the bullseye or 10-ring, as you mentally see yourself performing the perfect shot. Experience has shown that if you visualize yourself using good form and the arrow hitting the target, your shots will be more consistent and successful. Your muscles will do what your mind tells them to do.

Third, think only about the shot in front of you. Develop a routine, focusing your mind on the sequence of steps in that set. For example: 1) seat the bow hand properly; 2) focus on the exact spot you want to hit; 3) pull and anchor; 4) hold the pin on the spot; and 5) apply back pressure and release. The sequence will vary somewhat from archer to archer, but should certainly include the weakest points of your shooting form.

Thoughts similar to these are the only ones that should be in your mind. If negative ideas are present; let down and mentally go through the shooting sequence. Then, re-address the target and follow your sequence of shooting steps.

There is nothing wrong with letting the bow down. It is wrong when you release an arrow that you think will be a bad hit. Since there is only one shot at a target, you owe it to yourself to make it the best one you have to offer.

To strengthen your mental program, place yourself in a variety of pressure situations. Challenge another archer and make practice a competition. A favorite exercise of mine is to allow each archer one shot at a target and increasing the distance by five-yard intervals. We normally start at 20 yards and end at 50 yards. It’s a quick game that teaches the importance of each arrow. You have to learn to pay attention only to your shots while ignoring those of your opponents.

Another effective pressure situation is a novelty shoot at a tournament. The setting provides plenty of spectators and lots of commotion. You have to learn to take the crowd out of your mind and focus on the shooting sequence. If you think you are a good shot, believe it and then shoot to prove it.

Before starting a tournament, go to the practice range. Shoot next to one of the best shooters in attendance. This will put mental pressure on you. Remember, don’t focus on what the other archer is doing. Focus on your own shooting routine.

Finally, participate in archery demonstrations whenever possible. You can perform for a few people or entertain a large audience. You’ll be honing your skills as an archer and promoting our great sport.

The key to controlling tournament anxiety is to develop a program of strong mental control. Establishing a shooting sequence during practice is the most effective way to make your mental game a natural part of your shooting routine. Remember, you learn on the practice range and practice at the tournament site. The best opportunity to test what you have achieved is in competition. The more tournaments you shoot, the better you will be at managing your thinking and stress level. When you master mental control, you have taken the biggest step toward being a champion archer.
