Shooters of the year

Shooter of the Year (SOY) points were calculated by adding final scores from all 5 SOY events; plus the final x count for The Vegas Shoot, NFAA Indoor Nationals, and the First Dakota Classic. Each x will be counted as an additional point.

For Professional divisions only, a podium bonus was awarded for the top 3 scores at all 5 events in the male and female category. (3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, and 1 point for 3rd place)

Amateur status refers to any archers that compete in the 3 Star Adult, Senior, Flight, Junior or Young Adult Championship divisions. If an archer has competed in a Professional or Adult/Senior Championship division in 2023, they are considered a Professional for the Shooter of the Year awards.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING IN NFAA TOURNAMENTS? 35 years

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE UP ARCHERY? When I was 9 or 10 years old, I’d go with my dad to sporting goods stores. I thought archery looked cool so I tried it and found out I was pretty good. What inspired me was the energy of the sport along with the precision in not only the fine details of form, but more so the precision of keeping a sharp mindset. However, I will say that ahead of that, my mom and dad inspired me. They encouraged me, trained me, and supported me not only in archery but so many other sports throughout my childhood and adult life. Without my parents, I don’t know if I would have come this far.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THE MOVE FROM LOCAL TOURNAMENTS TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS? I am fortunate to work at BCY - the leading bowstring fiber company in the world - and this afforded me many opportunities to travel worldwide for the company. Competing in national tournaments felt like the natural next step after gaining experience in the local tournaments.

HOW DO YOU TRAIN FOR A TOURNAMENT? I shoot daily whether it be at work on my lunch break, at home in the yard, or in my basement. I go to my favorite shooting range, Center Sports in Columbia, and other outdoor shooting ranges. I also like to attend smaller-scale events because the thrill of the shoot is so fun. Sometimes I even shoot with my eyes closed just to build focus and form. I think that has been a huge part of why I am successful - archery is not only physically challenging with core work and finding the right balance, stance, and even rhythm, but it also builds mental fortitude which takes just as much energy as the physical. I also work out whether it be lifting weights, a run on the treadmill, or even a long walk in the woods. I think it’s important to keep moving no matter the level of energy, and staying fit definitely helps me with this sport.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ARCHERS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A TOURNAMENT?

Don’t put all your focus into getting a bullseye – instead, focus on your form and technique. Also, find your own style, but most importantly, have fun.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE EXPERIENCE OVER THE PAST YEAR THAT STICKS OUT AS MEMORABLE? Darrington was my favorite because of the beautiful and challenging ranges. I give a ton of credit to the folks who maintain the ranges because I know it is a lot of hard work. We were very fortunate to have beautiful weather the entire time so the fresh air along with the mountain views and the greens of the woodlands was just perfect.

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN ALL FIVE OF THE QUALIFYING SHOOTS! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TOURNAMENT TO ATTEND AND WHY? Because each tournament was a different type, I enjoyed them all and I can’t pick just one. It was cool to be a part of each venue’s unique setting and rigorous and expansive range. I really enjoyed shooting all five different styles.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING IN NFAA TOURNAMENTS? 6 years

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE UP ARCHERY? I started shooting with my dad when I was 2. I really started competing when I was 10. Archery to me.... well I live, eat, breathe archery. My hard work, love, and dedication for archery show in the results of my work. Unlike a traditional team sport, if I fall short I only have myself to blame and I go back home and work harder.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THE MOVE FROM LOCAL TOURNAMENTS TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS? As I started to develop as an archer, I think we all realized that I was going to be doing this for a while. To become better at whatever you are doing you need to be challenged. You need to practice and compete with people who are as good or better than you to make yourself better.

HOW DO YOU TRAIN FOR A TOURNAMENT? Tons of practice. God has blessed me in so many ways. Not only the amazing talent he has given me, but also blessed me with being homeschooled and having our own range to shoot in before we moved. I usually shoot 4-6 hours a day, especially during indoor season. We have two mottos posted in our shop.

1) Perfect practice makes perfect.

2) Hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ARCHERS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A TOURNAMENT?

Go in with no expectations. Have fun and enjoy the experience.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE EXPERIENCE OVER THE PAST YEAR THAT STICKS OUT AS MEMORABLE? Vegas, hands down! My goals for this shoot were:

1) to shoot a 300

2) to make a shoot-off

3) to make podium

I was able to achieve all three of my goals: I shot a 300 in the S3DA tournament and also shot a 300 in the first round of the Vegas shoot; I made it to a shoot-off for second place in the young adult championship class; I placed second, and was the first female to podium in the young adult championship class.

I think another WOW moment that I had was when I realized that I had won Shooter of the Year with 4 first and 1 second.

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN ALL FIVE OF THE QUALIFYING SHOOTS! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TOURNAMENT TO ATTEND AND WHY? That’s hard. I would say it’s between Vegas and The First Dakota Classic. I like head-to-head shooting and the pressure indoor shooting gives you.

60 National Champions Crowned at 2023 NFAA National Field Championships

Sixty National Champions were crowned at the 2023 NFAA National Field Championships held from July 21-23. Archers from 33 states and 3 countries took part in the three-day event in Darrington, Washington.

Day one consisted of 28 field targets, day two saw archers shooting 28 hunter targets, and day three concluded with 28 animal targets. The terrain on the courses is some of the most challenging in the country with many uphill, downhill, and sidehill shots, and the scenery is among the most beautiful. These reasons and more make Darrington a favorite for experienced and beginner field archers alike.

The previous officers of the Darrington Archers club stepped down from their positions in Spring 2022, and the new Board of the club worked tirelessly to ensure the ranges could stay open. With the help of other local ranges like Silver Arrow Bowmen, Skookum Archers, and KBH Archers, they were able to put on a successful national event to remember. Darren Wognild, President of Darrington Archers, spoke to their challenges over the past year. “We got handed the keys to a club that had little to no maintenance done on it for 2-3 years. Most of our courses were almost unshootable. My wife, three daughters, and I have spent every weekend since March sleeping in our trailer at the range preparing for this awesome event that we were very lucky to host.”

Lalit Jain was shooting in his first-ever field archery event in Darrington and won the Adult Male Freestyle Limited Recurve division with a score of 1,548, 90 points higher than his next closest competitor. He was also an integral part of the organizing team that put on the event. “I have been shooting for the last 10 years and before this event I never realized how much effort it takes to put on an event. Winning the 2023 NFAA Indoor and Field Nationals was a dream come true. I came to the USA 6 months ago. Everything here was different for me. I had never shot a field event before. My fellow archers helped me with the rules and shared their experiences, which helped me to shoot better. I liked the challenge of shooting different distances from different terrains. I love shooting arrows and when there is a challenge it gets more fun.”

The NFAA would like to congratulate all winners from the 2023 NFAA National Field Championships and thank all who attended to support field archery. Keep an eye on the NFAA website for location and date information to be released soon for the 2024 NFAA National Field Championships. We hope to see you there!

A hot doe had given the big 10-pointer the slip and now he was frantically searching the area trying to pick up her trail. As he widened his search pattern, he entered my shooting range. Since his movement was quick and erratic, it was challenging to find a good shot opportunity. Earlier, the doe had used the trail near my stand as her escape route. Now, the 170-class buck had found the doe’s scent trail and was headed directly toward my stand. I turned and faced the opposite direction in anticipation of ambushing him as he walked past my stand. I knew the shot would have to be close, because of the dense brush nearby. As the buck passed me, I came to full-draw and made a doe grunt. The buck stopped 6 yards away at the slight quartering angle. When the sight pin came to rest on the last few ribs facing me, the arrow was on its way. The missile exited low out the front of the chest cavity. Seconds later, the buck had expired.

One of the more difficult shots in archery occurs when a deer presents itself inside the 10-yard range. Hitting the animal is not the problem. Getting the bow drawn without being detected, having the animal stop at an opportune time, and achieving correct arrow placement are the problems. Quite often the only tree suitable for a stand is too close to the trail. If this is the scenario, go up the tree another 10 or 15 feet before erecting the stand. The added elevation will make it more difficult for the deer to smell or see you. Drawing on a deer at close range is difficult because the animal has excellent peripheral vision. The best choices are to draw when the head is behind an obstacle such as a tree or wait and draw after he walks past you. Minimize your movement by placing the

MAKING CLOSE DEER SHOTS

sight pin on the deer before you draw the bow. At that point you will be already for the shot without having to lower the bow arm to bring the sight on target.

It is not a good idea to shoot at a walking deer. Stopping the deer in your shooting lane isn’t as difficult as one might think. Once you have come to full-draw, make a noise and the deer will stop. I prefer to make a grunt sound and the deer will usually freeze in its tracks. If that doesn’t work, it can be stopped with a verbal command, such as saying, “Hey!” or “Stop!” When the deer stops, get the shot off quickly, because it will definitely be on full alert.

Another good method of stopping the deer is through the use of scents. Place some deer scent on the opposite side of the trail from your stand. When the deer walks near the scent, it will stop and turn its head toward the scent location. Several years ago, a high school boy approached me about helping him find a spot to shoot a deer on his father’s farm. While scouting the area, we found a location where most of the deer were crossing a ditch that went through the rolling pasture. Fifteen yards from the trail was a downed tree that made a perfect natural blind. The next morning, the young hunter placed a scent canister on the trail just opposite his blind. An hour later, he arrowed a six-pointer as it was drawn to the aroma of the canister.

Arrow placement is one of the major factors that determine success with the close deer shots. Think of the deer’s chest as a cavity holding an oblong cylinder about 12 inches long and 8 inches around. The objective is to make certain the arrow passes through as much of the cylinder as possible. Preferably, you would like for it to go through the area from one side to the other, ensuring the penetration of both lungs. Quite often, this is impossible on the close deer shots. Instead, try to execute an arrow that passes through the lower half of the front part of the chest cavity. This is the vicinity of the heart, major blood vessels, and large air tubes of the lungs. Such an arrow placement is very lethal.

A form of good practice is to purchase a 3-D deer target. If you hunt from a tree, set up

the target so you can practice shooting the different angles from an elevated position. Remember, you are not trying to hit the 10ring on the target. You are trying to shoot through the imaginary cylinder in the chest cavity.

Choosing the shot angle and placement is very critical in making a clean kill. If you hunt from an elevated position, the best shot angle is when the deer has walked past your stand. The aiming point will be in the back part of the chest cavity, but the exit will be from the lower front of the cavity. This is a very lethal shot and will also provide an excellent blood trail. Side-angle shots should be placed so the arrow enters a little high just behind the shoulder, causing the exit to be in the lower third of the chest cavity on the opposite side. Shots that are straight on or facing you are very “doable” if you can remain calm and hit a baseball-size target inside 10 yards. Assuming you are hunting from an elevated position of 15 to 25 feet and the deer is around 10 yards, aim at the base of the white patch on the neck. If the deer doesn’t go down in his tracks, he won’t travel far and there will be an excellent blood trail. The worst possible shot, which should not be taken, is when the deer is a quarter angle toward you. The shoulder blade inhibits the archer from making a high percentage shot. Since the arrow has to pass through the shoulder blade at an angle, it is very difficult to get good penetration. Your best option is to wait and hope a better shooting opportunity presents itself.

Most 3-D archers use small sight pins. I do not recommend that for deer hunting. Use the bigger fiber optic pins so they are more visible under poor lighting conditions. Quite often the shot opportunity at a big buck occurs at first or last light of day. You don’t want to have to search to find your sight pin when making these shots. I would also recommend that the first pin be sighted in for 15 yards. If the deer is between 5 and 20 yards, the arrow will hit within 1 inch of your aiming point. Close deer shots can be difficult, but if you choose your angle and arrow placement carefully, you can come home a winner.
