Director Spotlight Oregon - John Wainwright As a young boy I was very active, and my mother signed me up with a 4-H group to keep busy. So at the age of 9 I started shooting archery and did very well in the local tournaments. When I was 19, I started working at a small sporting goods store and got interested in archery again. After a few close calls while firearm hunting, I thought that bowhunting would be safer. Plus the hunting session was much longer. I started shooting local tournaments again and bowhunting was starting to gain popularity. When 3D shoots started, I thought it would be fun and great practice for hunting. While attending a tournament, another shooter commented that I shoot traditional bow very well. He asked if I would like to go to the Oregon Bow Hunters Indoor State Tournament and I agreed. There I came to find out what the indoor five spot target was, how to join Oregon Bow Hunters and NFAA to be eligible for awards. A few years later, an OBH board member asked if I would be Interested in taking over the newly opened NFAA Director position for Oregon. I was voted in to the position and have been there ever since. Over the years I have been very active for the state of Oregon and learned a lot from the people at the NFAA office and made a few new friends. In 2016 I was voted in as President of Oregon Bow Hunters. I’m a Level 2 Instructor, having 20+ years in Bowhunter Education, and I’m an accomplished Bowyer. I am still shooting competitions. I believe with all I have done and learned I am making an impact on our sport of archery in the state of Oregon.

Rhode Island - Chuck Howard Archery has always been a part of my life. As a kid, playing cowboys and Indians with the neighborhood kids, I always played an Indian. My first bow was a Bear compound, a Christmas present from my parents when I was 8 years old. As is often the case, my teenage years found me pursuing

The National Field Archery Association (NFAA) is comprised of 49 state associations. Each member association elects a State Director to serve on the NFAA Board of Directors. These Directors work not only on the state level but also on the sectional and national level to regulate NFAA events, equipment rules, round rules, and more! The Directors serve as the voting members for all proposed changes to the NFAA Constitution and Bylaws. Interested in getting more involved in the NFAA? Contact us at info@nfaausa.com for more information. Each issue we will take a moment to get to know a few of the current NFAA State Directors. other interests which kept me busy well into my thirties. At that time, I found a rekindled love for hunting. A close friend of mine gave me an old bow of his, and I brought that bow to a local pro shop, where I was introduced to target archery. Needless to say I quickly fell in love with it. I joined the NFAA in March of 2007, and since then have had the privilege of meeting and shooting with many wonderful people. I have won an indoor state championship, and have placed third in a sectional. When Mr. Moore announced his retirement earlier this year, I knew it was time for me to get more involved. I asked him if he thought I would be a good fit for any of the open positions, and he suggested Director. I put my name on the ballot and have now been elected by my fellow members. Archery has had a big impact on my life. Through archery I met one of my best friends, which then afforded me an opportunity for a career change. Shooting has taught me patience and how to remain focused, whether I am on the shooting line or just in daily life. Over the course of my 12 years shooting target archery, the one thing that stands out to me is the fact that, even though we are all there to try to win, we will all stop to help a fellow archer if we can. As State Director I feel now is my chance to give back to the sport that has given so much to me. I am honored to have this opportunity.

South Dakota - Tim Withers I was introduced to archery in the early 70’s. There was a pro shop in Pierre where I participated in youth league every Saturday, one name I can remember Dean Gretchman who helped there and encouraged us to continue with archery. I first heard about the archery program from a friend of mine that lived in the same neighborhood who asked me to go along with him to archery one day, I was instantly hooked. I was introduced to the NFAA in the early 90’s. I was out at our outdoor range when I met a guy named Bruce Cull, he was starting to work on mowing trails and setting targets for the first South Dakota Archers Association State 3D. He asked if I could help them and encouraged CHAMPION, me to join the SDAA and NFAA. I was soon hooked, a few years passed

and I became the Northeast Area Governor, later being elected to Vice President and soon President a position I held until the spring of 2019 when I was selected as the South Dakota State Director. I was fortunate enough to win a few state 3D titles in the Freestyle Limited Class before shoulder complications forced me to stop shooting and switch gears towards helping others and working events. I have been the head archery coach for the Hughes County 4-H archery program since 1995 and either the chief range or assistant range officer for 4-H Nationals since 2006. Being able to do all of these things has led to many things, in the fall of 2018 my wife and I were inducted into the South Dakota 4-H Shooting Sports Hall of Fame and the winter of 2018 I was awarded the South Dakota Game Fish and parks Division of Wildlife Exemplary Public Service Award for all of the volunteer work I do in archery. Archery has made a huge impact on my life, I have been fortunate enough to meet a lot of great people that I would not have if it were not for being involved in archery. This impact in my life includes my family. My wife and son both enjoy archery with my son growing up shooting archery since he was three years old and competing in tournaments since he was six.

texas- steve coleman Growing up, I lived near the woods and started shooting when I was 16. In 1984 I joined the NFAA and soon after that became more involved. Locally, I became President of the Huaco Bowman Archery Club. Following that I served as Texas President and then Director starting in 1996. I currently hold 6 national titles, 37 state and sectional titles along with various records. Through this sport I have created lots of friends and it’s been in my life for over 40 years.

WASHINGTON - TC PARKER I have been an archer and bowhunter since childhood, having been introduced to the sport by my father in 1940. Casual arrow flinging turned to serious aiming when I was relegated responsibility for maintaining my equipment, including finding and repairing arrows. I became involved in organized archery during my teen years, joining the local club Grays Harbor Bowmen. I helped the Club build a field range in 1952, and after our retirement have returned to shoot there and to help maintain that range. I joined NFAA in 1952 and I’m a life member of NFAA, Washington State Archery Association, and Grays Harbor Bowmen. I’ve also been at various times depending on where I lived a member of Hawaii State Archery Association, California Bowmen Hunters / State Archery Association, Virginia Bowhunters Association, and Florida Archery Association.

During my Marine Corps career (and subsequently accompanying my wife through her US Navy service) I found archery to be a very portable sport. It requires minimal personal equipment or infrastructure - just a bow and some arrows and target butts. Everywhere I was assigned there was already an archery range nearby, or I helped to build one. My wife and I even chartered Armed Forces Archers in Guam as a NFAA Club in 1981, and built a sevenlane range where we could shoot all the field distances by going twice around the course. I served as Membership / Treasurer of Washington State Archery Association for about 10 years. I have practiced and competed in about every style and division offered, starting with longbows and recurve bows when that was all that was available, experiencing the advent of sights, release aids, and the compound bow plus the transition from wood arrows to Fiberglas and aluminum and eventually aluminum / carbon composites. I’ve aged up from the junior divisions through adult, senior and now compete as Master Senior and usually shoot Freestyle Limited or Barebow styles. I had the pleasure to attend two IFAA World Field Championship tournaments: 1990 in Australia and 1994 in England. I have shot the NFAA Outdoor Nationals several times and won a few silver bowls! Archery is a big part of my life and identity. Participating in archery and traveling to events provides a group of “instant friends” who have at least one thing in common. Archery is also both an element of an exercise / fitness program and an inspiration / motivation to stay healthy so that I can continue to participate. A couple items of advice I would pass on to new archers: 1. Join a club. Use the range for practice and participate in the competitions. Even if you’ve got a spot to shoot in your yard or in the woods, the peer pressure and support of shooting with others will make you a better archer. And your club needs your support to stay in existence. 2. Compete. Don’t wait until you are “good enough”. If your arrows go generally where they are pointed, you are already good enough to participate. If only those few people who have a chance to win attend a competition, the course would be an empty place.

Redecorate

with Trendy Archery Decor By Elizabeth Litwin

Home decorating is a way many of us express our personality, interests, and style. Athletes from other sports and superfans alike decorate their spaces with memorabilia, art and other home goods, and archers are no different. Keep reading to see some of the most stylish interior decorating ideas inspired by archery.

FURNITURE & FIXTURES Perfect for a living room or as a nightstand, this accent table provides space for a lamp or knickknacks or even would serve as an excellent display for archery trophies.

This light fixture from Damm Designs features brass shafts with real, professionally fletched feathers. Multiple of these would look great over a kitchen island or bar area and offer great conversation starters with guests.

These arrow-themed curtain tiebacks are a subtle and functional way to show your love for archery. Even better, they also fit many dĂŠcor styles. Whether your taste is more mid-century modern, farmhouse, or classic, these could most definitely spruce up your living area or bedroom.

HANDMADE PIECES

Signs are certainly on trend right now. This urban metal sign would be a great fit for a den or office and provides unique wall décor for the avid 3D archer.

Arrows are super trendy and can be used as décor in many places around the home. These playful, hand-painted decorative arrows are a fun addition to a home office, table centerpiece or kid’s room.

“The StudioLuscious” store on Esty crafts wooden targets with plenty of color choices to match any space. Use these alone or amid a gallery wall for that extra bit of personality. 22 scores, tournament info and more at nfaausa.com

ART PRINTS

Art prints are an easy and affordable way to decorate a small space or create a gallery wall! Here are some eyecatching designs by independent artists:

Sibo Miller created this detailed drawing of an Olympic recurve archer. Not only does it depict the arrow in mid-flight, it illustrates the limb movement that occurs immediately following the archer’s release. Pretty neat!

This abstract piece by Maxime Roy would add a pop of color to any home. It features a barebow archer’s form at full draw and leaves lots of interpretation up to the viewer.

Claudia Rinofner’s delicate drawing showcasing an archer on horseback takes the viewer to a time when archery was used solely for hunting to survive. The portrayal of a female huntress in this picture is especially unique for those times.

Whatever fixture, table, décor price or artwork you choose, pieces influenced by archery are sure to liven up any space and showcase your passion for the sport. Feel free to post a photo of your archery-inspired home décor on social media and tag @NFAAUSA. We would love to see archery pieces around your home. Happy decorating! scores, tournament info and more at nfaausa.com 23

How To: Archery Bowling This game is great for all ages & skill levels! Goal: to reinforce the archer’s form.

Materials • 10 Solo cups • Bow • Arrows • Optional: Platform or box (something you wouldn’t mind being damaged) • Optional: Bail

Set Up • Optional: Place your platform or box in front of a bail. You may also set them up on the ground. • Place the 10 cups accordingly – 4 on the bottom, three next, two next, and one on the top. • Line up the archers several feet away.

How to Play • Each archer gets two arrows, or you can have teams of two and each archer gets one arrow to shoot. • Each archer will get a chance to shoot and they want to knock as many cups down as they can. • Each cup knocked down is worth one point, but there are other ways to earn points. • Shooting a cup – 1 point • Shooting the bail and it knocks off a cup – 1 point • Stacking the cups – 1 point for each cup (not including the bottom cup) There are penalty points: in order to keep archers from simply shooting the platform and knocking all the cups off there is a penalty of 5 points if the platform/box is hit. LET THE VIRUS MAKE YOU A GREAT ARCHER By Terry Wunderle target. When the arrow is released, the bow arm should break directly toward the target and at the same angle on every shot. If it doesn’t, you will be pushing or pulling your arrow in another direction.

Has the coronavirus got you confined? Are you missing all of the archery shoots in your area because they are cancelled? Take advantage of this good opportunity to get your shot refined. You don’t need a lot of distance to practice. Five to ten yards is all you will need. Hopefully, your yard, garage or a room in your house will provide a place for an appropriate-sized target butt. That is where you can perfect the art of blank bale shooting. To begin, don’t put a target face on the backstop, so you can completely focus on duplicating your form. During this blank bale shooting, notice if your bow arm and your release arm are finishing in the same position after each shot. Most shots are missed because of the way the bow arm reacts. Keep a steady forward pressure on the bow arm, which should be directed at the

Keep the bow arm relaxed. Unnecessary tight muscles in the bow arm or bow shoulder will produce bow and sight movement. The only muscle tension in the bow arm should be the muscles needed to maintain a steady force on the bow handle, pressing it toward the target. It is very important that the same degree of forward pressure is applied on every shot or you will experience high or low groups.

react. If you are using perfect form, they should be identical every time. It is unusual to see any two people with identical form, although the form of most good archers is very similar. A common denominator is the ability to drive the bow arm through the shot and be consistent. You have to find the variation of good form with which you are comfortable and then practice it until every shot can be exactly duplicated. In order to be a successful archer, you must be able to use the same rhythm, the same amount of back tension, the same explosive force, and the same shot completion. As the Covid-19 plays out in our lives, enjoy putting any free time to good use by practicing good form in the comfort of your own home. Then, when tournaments resume, you should be happy with the results.

The release hand should end up resting along your face or neck. If the release hand moves outward and away from your head, you are pulling with your arm muscles instead of the back muscles. To perform it correctly, the release hand should complete the shot near your face and in the same position. Keep the rhythm of the shots the same. Once you start to pull the bow apart, the arrow should be released in “In order to be a successful one or two seconds. archer, you must be able to If you can, video your shots. Attempt to shoot 10 shots without moving the position of your feet. Play back the video and see how your bow arm and release arm

use the same rhythm, the same amount of back tension, the same explosive force, and the same shot completion.”
