It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2009 National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY). The City of Seattle is proud to be home to this dynamic and inspiring showcase of talent, featuring filmmakers 22-years-old and younger, throughout the United States and abroad. In its third year, NFFTY has grown into the country’s largest youth film festival. I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to see the work of our next generation of filmmakers. With 113 films (features, shorts, documentaries, animation and music video), filmmaking panels featuring Hollywood professionals, concerts by young musicians and other film and music related activities, there’s something for everyone. NFFTY also gives special focus to the power of film by turning a spotlight on climate protection, social justice and world peace efforts. In addition, NFFTY, which strives to be “green” by using earth-friendly production standards, will be a carbon neutral film festival. All carbon emissions, including the flights of out-of-state attendees, will be offset by the purchase of carbon credits. In the years to come, NFFTY has the potential to help establish Seattle as one of the premier film cities in the country. I commend the staff, volunteers, filmmakers and sponsors who have worked so hard to bring their vision to fruition.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? When people fly or drive to NFFTY or we do anything that uses energy, it puts greenhouse gases in the form of carbon monoxide into the environment.

WHAT DO WE DO?

First, NFFTY starts by reducing our carbon emissions as much as possible. That includes using local FSC certified printers who use soy inks and post consumer waste paper, utilizing paper-less film submission, and continually thinking of and implementing ways to be more green during the planning and production of our festival. Then, we buy carbon credits to offset what we can’t eliminate on our own. Carbon credits invest in carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects.

Prior to The CW, Maatta served as the Chief Operating Officer for The WB, a position he held since September 2005. As COO of The WB, Maatta served as the network’s General Counsel, as well as having direct oversight of all business and operations departments, such as business affairs, finance, network distribution, which included The WB 100+ station group, technology, legal, research, network operations, broadcast standards and human resources. The CW represents the second network Maatta has been involved with from the early stages. In 1993, he earned the distinction of becoming The WB’s very first employee, making many of the initial distribution deals. Maatta has been in the Warner Bros. family since 1986 when he joined Lorimar Telepictures Corporation as legal counsel. At Lorimar, he rose to Vice President, Business Affairs, and subsequently at Warner Bros. Television, Maatta held the positions of Senior Attorney and Vice President and Senior Attorney, before joining The WB. Prior to Lorimar, Maatta was a trial lawyer in San Francisco. Dave Phillips Dave Phillips is President & CEO of Corner of The Sky Entertainment, a film & television production company based in Los Angeles whose goal is to produce quality entertainment that touches and teaches. A native of New England, Dave was first smitten by showbiz after seeing Pippin on Broadway at the age of 12. After graduating Duke University, a chance meeting with film executive Strauss Zelnick inspired him to venture out west to enroll at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management as a way to attempt to join Hollywood or get it out of his system. Problem was, it got him in deeper, so upon graduation Dave became the only one in his MBA class to join a large talent agency’s mailroom for $200 a week. Dave quickly began to sign clients and was soon recruited to be a motion picture agent at the famed William Morris Agency. In his first year, he auctioned off over 14 scripts including While You Were Sleeping, Hoop Dreams, 50 First Dates, Sleepless in Seattle, Like Mike, & Jack and was named to The Hollywood Reporter’s first “Next Generation” issue as one of the entertainment industry’s top executives to watch under the age of 30. Desiring to be closer to making movies and not just deals, Dave accepted an offer from John Davis to join him producing at 20th Century Fox. The first project Dave set up was Pippin, from which creator Stephen Schwartz allowed use of the song Corner of The Sky as Dave’s company’s namesake. Soon Dave set up Good Luck Chuck starring Jessica Alba and sold Passion of the Ark to Sony in the largest screenplay auction for unproduced writers which became the basis for Evan Almighty which Universal Pictures asked him to Executive Produce.

JOHN D. MAATTA - CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, THE CW John D. Maatta was named Chief Operating Officer of The CW on January 24, 2006, overseeing the network’s business operations, including sales, business affairs, network distribution, legal, finance and human resources.

%-0\3& TH !VENUE .ORTH 3EATTLE

“When I entered NFFTY, I was a young girl from Omaha, Nebraska where the idea of working in the film industry was impractical. I entered the festival with a dream, but with no expectations. What I did not anticipate was NFFTY to give me hope and confidence not only as a filmmaker, but as a person. It was an invaluable experience that I’m sure was felt by all young filmmakers involved.

-Molly Grant-Leanna, 17, Release, NFFTY ‘08 “NFFTY was the most important weekend of my life. Having your film selected to be part of NFFTY’s incredible selection of mature, sophisticated, exciting, funny and dynamic films is liberating and empowering like no other. The only greater thing is getting to bond with the wonderful like-minded young people who made those very films!

-Gene Kim, 18, Touch the Stars, NFFTY ‘08 “Amazing. Every part of this weekend was amazing.

-Erica Sterne, 20, Father Time, NFFTY ‘08 “When I got back home from NFFTY, everyone I talked to asked me why I’ve been smiling all day... then I tell them.

-Kevin Klauber, 21, Memorium, NFFTY ‘08
