VICTORY IS SWEDE.

And sweet, too. Because winning the 2016 Motor Trend SUV of the YearŽ award is an accomplishment that makes us, at Volvo, extremely proud. Especially considering every single part on the All-New 2016 XC90 was completely redesigned. A feat that didn’t come easy, but definitely paid off.

WELCOME TO THE 10TH NFFTY!

NFFTY began as a dream to connect young filmmakers from around the world, giving them an experience that no other festival offered. In our history, NFFTY has showcased more than 2,000 films by the best new directors - all 24 years and under. That is over 2,000 films that in many instances may not have been seen by large festival audiences and 2,000 filmmakers that would not have met each other. From a one-night festival to a four-day world class experience, NFFTY continues to grow and evolve. This year marked the addition of the inaugural Screenplay Competition: Story Starts Here. We also have a renewed commitment to offerings like Works In Progress and our Young Women In Film initiative. For the third straight year

40% of our films have been directed by young women, and we are pleased to launch an award for Best Film with a Strong Female Protagonist. Through these efforts and our amazing community, NFFTY is once again acknowledged as one of the “50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” by MovieMaker Magazine. With 227 films from 33 states and 24 countries, we have stories that will delight and challenge you. There is something remarkable about being around the young, creative spirits that make these films. NFFTY filmmakers are supportive, collaborative, and give me hope for the future of film and storytelling. I feel fortunate to be surrounded by them, and each festival leaves me feeling refreshed and energized with a renewed sense of creativity. With that, I invite you to immerse yourself in many of the films this weekend. Meet the filmmakers. Ask questions. And I hope that you also leave inspired with your creative spirit renewed! 5

It’s the 10th anniversary and my theme for this year’s festival is gratitude. It takes a village to put on NFFTY, and you are all part of the magic that makes this festival happen. Thank you to the filmmakers. To the festival-goers and film lovers. Thank you to the parents who champion the films and to the friends who work on these films. To the teachers, mentors, and kickstarters. To the scores of NFFTY volunteers. Thank you to our kind and generous donors and our wonderful sponsors. To the entire NFFTY team.

W O R KS I N P R OG RE SS 2:30 PM FRIDAY APRIL 29 UPTOWN CINEMA 2 Join us for NFFTY’s 2nd annual Works In Progress event! Presented in partnership with Relativity School, we will be screening unfinished films from filmmakers 24 and under. The event will feature a panel of industry professionals providing constructive feedback to the selected filmmakers. This great opportunity to present unfinished works in an intimate, collaborative environment is open to all filmmakers; both those with or without a film screening in the regular festival lineup. 12

We will kick off the event with a presentation by Relativity School in which they will screen a portion of an upcoming Relativity-produced feature film and dissect the creative process. The audience is encouraged and will be called upon to participate in the screening and engage in the creative discussion.

PANELISTS Mark Milhone: Mark Millhone is the Academic Dean of Relativity School and has taught all aspects of screencraft at a number of film programs including New York University, Columbia University, North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina, Wilmington. Rick Stevenson: Rick Stevenson has produced, written, and/or directed thirteen feature films and nearly 100 hours of television, as well as founding the Prodigy Camp. He holds a doctorate from Oxford University, and is married with four children. Liza Keckler: Liza Keckler is the Head of Development for Screaming Flea Productions, the Northwest’s leading provider of non-fiction content. Her credits include Hoarders on A&E, The Legend of Mick Dodge on National Geographic Channel, Project Afterlife on Destination America, and as an Executive Producer at Travel Channel.

MASTERCLASS: THE I NDI E FI LM HUSTLE 11:30 AM FRIDAY APRIL 29 UPTOWN CINEMA 1 Join us as Danish filmmaker Christian E. Christiansen helps us navigate the hard-fought road from indie openings to Oscar noms. It’s the beginning filmmakers’ conundrum: You have a barely-there resumé and no money, and yet you need to balance business, story, and production while creating your own platform and staying in control. He also tells us about the difference between making movies in the U.S. and making movies in Europe – told through the lens of his own career, venturing from a low-budget Danish movie to a #1 opening at the U.S. box office. Christian E. Christiansen is an Oscar-nominated Danish producer and director who graduated in production from the National Danish Filmschool in 2001, and worked as a producer before making his directorial debut in 2006 with his film, Life Hits. He was nominated for an Oscar for his short film, At Night, which he developed into the 2008 feature, Crying For Love. His 2001 film, The Roommate, was the first ever film directed by a Dane to go straight to number one at the American box office. Presented by

3:00 PM SATURDAY, APRIL 30 UPTOWN CINEMA 1 Is virtual reality the future of film or just a fad? With companies like Microsoft and Google pouring in money to develop VR technology and content, it would appear to be the next wave as filmmaking becomes more immersive and experience-driven. From big corporations to the independent filmmaker, VR is already changing the way stories are being told. Join as us as we strap on a headset and dive into the world of VR storytelling; how to do it, when to do it, and why it’s the next big thing. PANELISTS Elia Petridis: Elia Petridis is the CEO and Key Creative of Filmatics VR Creative Services based in Los Angeles. Among Elia’s VR projects include a collaboration with WeVr: Eye for an Eye: A Séance in VR. Filmatics conducts a transmedia experience allowing the viewer to emotionally possess their virtual space through other forms of media, while at the same time allowing the VR experience to exist as a singular entity. Connor Hair: Connor Hair is a writer, director, and award-winning cinematographer. After working as a cinematographer on six feature length projects, Connor shifted his focus toward directing virtual reality experiences. His knowledge of camera technology and directing experience allowed for a confident transition into this new art form. VR PANEL MODERATOR Sandy Cioffi: Sandy Cioffi is a Seattle-based film and video artist, having produced and directed several films, including the criticallyacclaimed Sweet Crude (filmed in the volatile Niger Delta between 2005 and 2008).
