Getting Athletes
Back in the Game
Dr. Annette Zaharoff promotes active living and takes a non-surgical approach to treatment at the Non-Surgical Center of Texas. Special to NFit
Five years ago, Angela Reid overcame pain in her knees and legs to complete the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure. The pain persisted, however, eventually running her off the training road and into a seemingly endless round of doctor appointments. She received steroid injections, yet the pain continued. Reid went to a specialist who recommended knee replacement surgery, which would mean an end to serious running. Reid, a registered nurse, asked her friends on the Run Gear Run running team for advice. They suggested she call Dr. Annette Zaharoff. In the coming months, Reid would undergo physical training and rounds of cutting-edge injection therapies. A little over a year after being told she would need major surgery to replace a knee, Reid completed her first triathlon. Stories like these are common for patients of Zaharoff, who specializes in non-surgical treatment of physical injuries and pain at her aptly named practice, the Non-Surgical Center of Texas. She commonly treats athletes, musicians and others with acute muscle, nerve and joint injuries and chronic and recurrent injuries. She is sought, in part, because recovery time is often shorter. Zaharoff is a staunch proponent of the non-surgical approach, and she volunteers to treat under-served communities in Central America. She’s traveled to Honduras and Mexico to train physicians on how to use injection therapies, and administered treatment to hundreds of patients. Zaharoff’s first doctor’s order for Reid was in many ways the hardest: She told her to stop running immediately. “That brought tears to my eyes,” Reid recalled. “But then she told me I should try physical therapy with her office to show me how to exercise my legs without straining my knees.” Zaharoff has a long history treating athletes, both amateur and pro. A former professional tennis player who played around the world, Zaharoff’s résumé includes stints as team physician or medical coordinator for triathlons, boxing tournaments, basketball tournaments and professional tennis events. She was a tournament physician at the Australian Open in 2003 and at the 1998 NCAA Men’s Final Four All-Star Basketball Game. She’s been a medical adviser to the U.S. Tennis Association, and she serves on the San Antonio Sports Foundation Committee and Advisory Councils. Zaharoff also serves on the Mayor’s Fitness Council and

has been a chair of its Active Living Council, tasked with creating a three- to five-year master plan to promote active living and ensure everyone in Bexar County has access to safe, healthy places and programs to support physical activity. “For me, the key to treating patients really comes down to four basic questions,” Zaharoff said. “What’s the injury? How did it happen? How do we treat it? How can we prevent it from happening again?” For Reid, the answers to those questions involved a complex, yet effective treatment program. Zaharoff told Reid that her iliotibial band (IT band) – muscle tissue outside the thigh that extends from the pelvis and over the
}
hip to below the knee – was very tight. In addition, Reid’s vastus medialis oblique (VMO) – part of her quadricep muscle – was very weak. The combination caused her kneecap to rotate outward, away from its regular resting place, and constantly scrape away cartilage during running. So Zaharoff started Reid on a physical therapy regimen involving heat, ice and external stimulation of the muscles to strengthen them. As Reid got stronger, Zaharoff recommended swimming and cycling, which are less strenuous on the knees. Then Zaharoff suggested prolotherapy – injections that promote growth of new
ligament tissue in weak areas. As Reid’s knees improved, Zaharoff gave her the green light to start light running, then longer distances. In June 2010, Reid completed her first triathlon in Austin, combining her newfound love of swimming and cycling with running. She followed that up with a 100-mile bicycle ride in October. With the pain in her knees gone, Reid trained for, and completed, the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll half-marathon that year. For more than a quarter-century, retired police detective Bill McLennan turned to Zaharoff to treat a variety of injuries. Not long ago, McLennan suffered from pain in his right arm that threatened his ability to lead police academy classes at the shooting range. Zaharoff told McLennan about a relatively new treatment called platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy. She placed some of McLennan’s blood in a spinning centrifuge, which separated the platelet cells that help initiate healing in damaged tissue. Then she injected this platelet-rich plasma into the area around his right elbow. About a week after the PRP therapy, McLennan said, his arm felt much better. Six weeks later, he asked for a second round of PRP therapy to take care of the last twinges of pain. That was May 2010, and McLennan says he’s been pain-free in his right arm ever since. “There was no anesthesia, no surgery and no time in a hospital bed,” he said. “For me, it was a simple, effective treatment. My injury was so bad I couldn’t shoot a gun. Now I’m out on the range shooting big guns.” Zaharoff has a biology degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and she earned her medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. She completed her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, and spent a summer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Zaharoff is board certified by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, certified by the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and a member of the American Academy of Pain Management. “We spend a lot of time talking with patients to develop a detailed rehabilitation plan,” Zaharoff said. “There’s no cookie-cutter way to effectively treat someone. I firmly believe treatment should be customized and tailored to meet a patient’s needs and expectations.” ✽

Don’t Ignore
the Problem
How one of my favorite foods was actually harming me by Bre’anna Emmitt
16
NFIT WOMAN july/august 2013
“Why is everyone going glutenfree?” my husband asked me. “Oh, it’s just a fad diet,” I said, rather arrogantly. I put down my rolling pin, looked up from my flour-covered hands and went on. “Some people need it for an autoimmune disease, but most people are just jumping on the bandwagon.” That conversation was about six months ago. One by one, I felt like my friends were turning away from gluten. It irritated me. I mean, wheat has been around forever. Why was it suddenly the root of all evil? Many of my friends who gave it up did so for health annoyances or autoimmune diseases, and they claimed to notice a drastic difference once it was out of their bodies. I wasn’t sure if I believed them. I was sticking with my “bandwagon” theory. Then a friend casually mentioned to me that when she removed gluten from her diet, her autoimmune thyroid
levels completely returned to normal – as proven by blood tests. Now, I happen to have the same thyroid disease, and I wondered if maybe it could help me, too. So there I was, trying gluten free – the “fad” thing I had just mocked a few weeks prior. For the record, I held to my stubborn nature and didn’t tell anyone I was doing it – not even my family, mostly for fear of harassment and possible excommunication from my Midwestern relatives who sop up every sauce with a slice (or four) of bread. I noticed no difference for a month. I was absolutely sure I must not have gluten intolerance, but I kept it up until my next thyroid check. And then … around week six, I started feeling like a new woman. Not only did my thyroid improve, little quirks I had chalked up to “being a grownup” slowly disappeared. Decade-long

stomach problems were solved, my joints felt better, my hands and feet weren’t puffy and tingly in the mornings and I had so much energy. I thought back a few years to a conversation I had with an endocrinologist. I remember her looking over my blood work and telling me she suspected I had Celiac disease, which is a severe form of gluten intolerance. Per her advice, I gave up gluten for three weeks to see if it would help me. In that short amount of time, it did me no good. So at that point, and up until recently, I went right back to eating gluten – lots and lots of gluten – and continued to unknowingly damage my body from the inside out. But once I got it out of my system, I felt fantastic. Which got me thinking: For me, physical health meant my diet needed to drastically change. But what about the other areas of life? How often do we do the exact same thing to our mental health, our spiritual health and our relational health? How often do we act on the same old habits that usually seem just fine, but are actually harming our own well-being? Maybe it’s a friendship in a rut or a marriage that needs some help. Maybe it’s the way we pass our time or the way we spend our money. Maybe it’s a family tie left hanging by the last fray of the last thread. Maybe it’s __________. Whatever it is, I want to encourage you to make an effort to figure out the problem and stick to the solution … even if you’re like me and have just pridefully finished telling someone how ridiculous that solution may be. ✽ Bre’anna Emmitt is a Christian, a wife, a mother of three and a freelance writer. Slim Down to Shape Up
Give your “best body ever” a kick-start by targeting your problem areas with i-Lipo Ultra+ treatments. by Megan Coleman
18
NFIT WOMAN july/august 2013
For those looking to shape up this summer, i-Lipo Ultra treatments are a convenient and fast way to lose inches from pesky problem areas that are impervious to exercise. i-Lipo Ultra is perfect for circumferential fat reduction, and when used with the infrared vacuum massage, it improves the appearance of cellulite. i-Lipo Ultra uses low-level lasers to mimic the effect of exercise on the body’s fat stores. Vigorous exercise places a demand on the body for extra energy, which the body derives from stored fat. While exercise does not allow you to choose which part of the body it uses the fat from, i-Lipo Ultra does. With i-Lipo, you can target specific pockets of fat that bother you most. For some, their problem area is the stomach. For others, it could be the legs or butt. Whatever the area, i-Lipo Ultra can quickly deplete the fat storage and leave you looking and feeling your best. The non-invasive body contouring system is one of the latest technologies from Chromogenex, a world leader in laser and light aesthetic treatments. Designed and manufactured in the U.K., i-Lipo Ultra is quickly making its way across the United States and taking the fat-loss industry by storm!
➻
The i-Lipo Ultra treatments are incredibly fast and effective. While the name is suggestive of liposuction, i-Lipo is actually non-invasive and completely different from traditional liposuction and cool sculpting techniques. Using externally applied laser paddles, the machine delivers an extremely gentle method of ridding fat from the body. The lasers work to break down stubborn triglycerides inside fat cells, which then convert to glycerol and fatty acids. These molecules are then able to permeate through the fat cell walls, leaving the fat cells empty and able to collapse. Picture taking grapes and turning them into raisins, and you’ve accurately visualized what i-Lipo Ultra does to your adipose fat cells. After the stored fat is released, your lymphatic system will pick it up and “burn” the fat as energy for your body. The released fat is then eliminated naturally. While i-Lipo Ultra may already sound too good to be true, we’re not done yet! These pain-free treatments take only about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Yes, you read that correctly. The i-Lipo Ultra treatments are incredibly fast and effective. You can even do the treatments during your lunch break and go right back to work with no downtime or nasty side effects. While brief post-treatment cardiovascular exercise is required, there are no additional changes to diet and exercise on non-treatment days required to see results. However, slight changes may be suggested in order to keep results long-term. A standard of at least eight treatments total is recommended for drastic centimeter/inch loss. These treatments are usually completed in one month if treatments are done twice per week, but a series of eight can be completed in as little as two-and-a-half weeks for patients who are under a time crunch. For other fat reduction methods, results can take weeks or even months to show up! Patients undergoing i-Lipo Ultra treatments enjoy results almost immediately after a treatment. It’s not uncommon for a patient to lose up to an inch or two measured over three points of the problem area during one treatment. These immediate results often encourage people who may otherwise not have been motivated to start or stick to a healthy regimen of diet and exercise. With no pain, no needles and no downtime, i-Lipo Ultra delivers an effortless body-contouring system that provides quick-fix results that can be maintained indefinitely through proper diet and exercise. i-Lipo is perfect for finally getting that toned swimsuit body you’ve always wanted, or for any other occasion. Enjoy being inches smaller in just four weeks with the help of i-Lipo Ultra. ✽ Alterna Clinic is located at 18730 Stone Oak Parkway, Ste. 106, in San Antonio, Texas. Taking the
First Step
When dealing with post-breakup heartache, detaching helps jumpstart the healing process. by Luis Santiago
As a dating and relationship coach, one of the more difficult situations I address is breakups. I’ve coached several women through this tough process, and even though each couple’s circumstances vary, the heartache and fear are the same. The very first thing I do is get them to understand that even though breakups are sad, they are not necessarily bad. It’s common to experience a wide variety of emotions post-breakup, but it’s important to learn how to process them in a healthy way. It doesn’t matter why the relationship ended or how long you were together. There are standard steps to healing that apply to any and all situations. The three steps of healing I coach my clients through are: ❶ detach, ❷ accept and ❸ forgive. In this article, I’m going to focus on numero uno – the most important step: Detach! Remember, the longer it takes for you to
20

make that first step, the longer it takes to heal. I know you can never predict the future when it comes to breakups. There is always the possibility that you will reconnect, but don’t let your hopes of getting back together keep you from letting go. The fact of the matter is, at the present moment, he doesn’t feel you should be together. There is really nothing you should say or do to convince him otherwise. Really, why would you want to, anyway? He should be with you because he genuinely wants to, not because you were able to convince him to. (Side note: If you have any hopes of getting back together, detaching is the fastest way to win him back. Believe me, if it’s meant to be, he’ll come back.) Here are the common mistakes women make that prolong post-breakup pain. If you want to start to detach, follow these rules. If you don’t take this advice, you will poten-
tially set yourself up for more heartache and disappointment, and worse, prolong the healing process.
Calling or contacting him This includes texts, Facebook, email – whatever! If a guy tells you he needs space, give him space! Trust me, if he really misses you, he will contact you. And if he contacts you, don’t be afraid to ask about his intentions (i.e. Is he ready to be in a relationship with you again or is he just feeling lonely?).
Spending time with him Contrary to what most women believe, hanging out with him is not going to make him commit to you in the long run. Actually, it has an adverse affect. Subconsciously, this
If a guy tells you he needs space,
give him space!
If he really misses you, he will contact you. tells him you don’t value your feelings, so why should he? As much as you try to tell yourself you are “cool” with it, you really aren’t. The truth is that you want to be his girlfriend, not his buddy, so don’t torture yourself.
Being intimate This is another huge mistake women make that can lead to lots of heartache. If he doesn’t want to be with you and you want to be in a relationship with him, do not be intimate. Being intimate with a guy who doesn’t want a serious relationship will not usually change his mind. He will respect you more if you don’t do it. Unfortunately, there is no circum-
venting the pain after a breakup, but know that there is hope. The pain only lasts as long as you allow it to. Take this time to focus on you! Rest assured, in due time, you will be able to look back and see that the experience has made you stronger and wiser. ✽

The Journey to
Weight Loss
Thanks to the HealthCrave Weight Loss Center, you never have to take on the personal, life-altering challenge of losing weight alone. by Tracee Orihel losing weight can be one of the hardest and most personal challenges for someone to go through. For many people, this personal journey goes way beyond losing weight and involves everything they are. Who we are, how we feel and where we come from, surprisingly, all have an impact on what we eat, how much we eat and how we lose weight. Guyla McClinton is HealthCrave’s expert consultant on weight loss, and she happens to know personally what it takes to achieve the weight-loss dream so many have. As a restaurant owner and trained chef, food was McClinton’s life until it left her overweight and sick. Dr. Lisa Kirk and her life-changing treatment saved McClinton’s life. After McClinton lost 35 pounds on the Simeon Protocol, Kirk asked McClinton to begin working with her, treating patients for the disease of being overweight. McClinton grew up in a grocery store and
was constantly around food; she even went on to work at Nabisco for 18 years. Experience in areas of life that affect everyone on a daily basis is what led McClinton to fulfill her dream of enabling patients to be in control of their weight and lead a healthy lifestyle. People should understand that processed foods are artificially flavored and unnatural, purposefully leaving us constantly wanting more. This is why it is so easy to gain weight. The HealthCrave Weight Loss Center breaks the cycle of gaining weight by triggering the food that causes each person’s weight gain and resetting their metabolism. “People will succeed in their desired weightloss goal as long as they follow the specific protocol and only eat the permitted foods,” McClinton says. Since McClinton has experienced the process of losing weight herself, she knows that
The HealthCrave Weight Loss Center offers a variety of weight loss packages, which are customized to each patient’s needs and medically supervised as they go through. Here’s what they offer: ◗ 5-Day Weight Management System ◗ 20-Day Weight-Loss Package ◗ 24-Day Challenge Bundle ◗ 40-Day Weight-Loss Package ◗ B Vitamin Injections ◗ Healthy Meal Plans
people who want to lose weight need an outside source who knows exactly what they are going through. Sometimes it’s difficult for family members and friends to provide the right support, especially if various diets and activities have previously failed. McClinton and the specialists at HealthCrave listen and go beyond the patients’ needs. They provide 24-hour support to keep patients on track both during and after the weight loss. “Never give up,” McClinton says. “Be all we can be for ourselves and those around us.” ✽

Getting High
➻
Climbing mountains: a metaphor for life by Jennifer Broome
This is about getting high … literally step by step. Climbing mountains is a metaphor for life. There are struggles and successes, ups and downs, stumbles and summits. Since moving to Colorado, I have developed a passion for hiking 14,000-foot peaks, commonly called 14ers. My first was quandary in early June 2011. I wore the same hiking books I had worn in Katrina. In a sense, it was symbolic for me since those shoes went through one of the worst disasters in U.S. history at sea level and then were going toward the heavens in a climb 14,265 feet high. With the snow on that early season hike, the old boots started disintegrating. On a regular 14er (one without snow), they say you burn about 3,000 calories. With snow, the calorie burn is more like 5,000. This summer, I will add – or bag, as hikers say – several more. Prime hiking season is August and September in the mountains. Each is a different journey of terrain, mental toughness, fitness challenges and dealing with weather elements. Last summer, I decided to add hiking Colorado’s highest and hardest 14ers to my list of fitness goals as part of my 40th birthday celebration. On one of the peaks, success came fairly easy. But it was a very different story on the other peak.
24
NFIT WOMAN july/august 2013
Mount Elbert is known as the “Rooftop of the Rockies.” At 14,440 feet, it is the highest point in Colorado and in the Rockies, including Canadian Rockies. This was my warm-up to Colorado’s hardest 14er, Capitol Peak. The Mount Elbert Northeast Trail is nine miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 4,700 feet. The trail is extremely well marked. There is a
struggles you may be having. It is about facing your fears. As we were climbing the toughest stretch between 13,300 feet and 13,900 feet, Frank got ahead of me. As I climbed, I came upon a woman who looked to be in her late 20s. She was struggling. As I quickly found out, she was teacher who was afraid of heights. I am
Hiking allows your vulnerable side to come out. It is about facing your fears. false summit at about 13,900 feet. From there, it is a fairly easy climb to the summit. My friend, Frank, from my hometown in South Carolina, joined me on this hike. At daybreak, we started out with two other friends, but they quickly dropped off of our pace. One of the things I love most about hiking with others is the conversation. It is the same with running. You tend to talk about all sorts of topics from struggles you may be having to the beauty of the scenery. Hiking allows your vulnerable side to come out, making it easier to find some clarity on issues or
too, but part of doing 14ers to me is facing that fear head-on. I coached her on by just climbing 15 to 20 steps at a time to a point where she was able to reach for the summit without fear. She had turned back three times before I came along. On her fourth attempt, she made it to the top of Colorado. It was sheer joy standing on the summit knowing I had helped someone else accomplish something she thought she could not do. My toughest hike to date is Capitol Peak, which is considered the toughest 14er in
Colorado because of the daunting Knife Edge you have to traverse from K2 to reach the 14,121-foot summit of Capitol Peak. It is considered Class 4 climbing and Class 5 exposure based on scale of 1 to 5. I headed out with “Sleeping on the Summits” authors, expert mountaineers and friends Jon Kedrowski and Chris Tomer, along with two other guys. This 14er is not for first-timers. Because it is a 17-mile round-trip, we hiked six miles the first afternoon and camped at Capitol Lake. I had never camped at elevation over 11,000 feet and found it difficult to eat, drink and sleep. I am sure part of it was nerves, but it was also the effects of the altitude on my body. Everyone reacts differently to altitude. At 3:20 a.m. that Saturday morning, we began our climb to the summit. You go up about 900 feet to reach the pass, then you have to do some bouldering into a glacially cut quarry field. With the sun rising, we scrambled and climbed to the ridgeline. From there, you get amazing views of K2, the Knife Edge, Capitol Peak and Pierre Basin Lakes. The basin is so deep because at one point, there was a glacier there. While the mileage is only 2.5 miles from Capitol Lake to the summit, the difficulty is high.
Before making ridgeline, we decided I would not summit. Chris, Joe and Michael went ahead, and Jon stayed back with me. Once safely on ridgeline, it was the right decision for Jon to go on without me. I felt defeated and disappointed. There were more than a few tears shed as I watched the guys straddle and maneuver their way across and back on the Knife Edge with a drop of about 800 feet on one side and close to 1,000 feet on the other. I made it to K2, and that was the farthest I would go that day. My lesson in the journey was multifaceted. Give your best. Others will help push you farther than you think possible. Be smart on the mountain. Ask for help; someone will step up. If you cry, it is OK. If you do not summit, you do not fail. You succeed in the journey that was right for you on that day. Take your journey high and see what you learn about yourself. When you reach the summit of a big hike, don’t be surprised if you are overwhelmed with emotion and cry. It is normal, as climbing mountains really is a metaphor for life. ✽ For more information, visit www.facebook. com/jenniferbroomefans.

➻
As with any 14er, start hiking early – even before daybreak – to summit by noon. The weather can change quickly on a 14er, and storms are likely on summer afternoons. Dress in layers. The start of the hike will likely be chilly. Shorts with a base layer and polar fleece or a jacket are usually perfect to start a 14er hike. Break in your hiking boots and hiking socks ahead of time. Here’s a list of other items you need: n Comfortable n Lunch (sandwich, backpack pizza, etc. – think high-calorie, but n CamelBak or water nutritious, as you bottle (take more will burn a lot of water than you calories) think you need) n Sunscreen n Energy drink n Sunglasses n Snacks (energy n First-aid kit bars, energy gels, n Waterproof jacket honey sticks, n Waterproof pants PBJ, cheese and n Gloves crackers, snack n Warm hat mix) n Bandana or balaclava

extremely effective in helping women achieve that much-desired lean physique while standing out from the dull and repetitive workout regimens that fill surrounding gyms. Smart Barre combines the principles of ballet, Pilates and yoga to create a rewarding mind and body
experience that is beneficial for both new and returning clients. While a traditional ballet barre is used to create resistance and maintain balance, you do not need a tutu to get the dancer look. Utilizing isometric movements and emphasizing proper postural alignment defines core muscles while working those typical trouble areas, from the arms and thighs to the seat and abdominals. Positive body changes are noticed in as few as 10 classes when clients are consistent and motivated. The benefits are ample, so why not give it a try? These daily stressful events increase the chances of developing illnesses and cancer. I have recently learned about a new miracle tree known as Moringa. A recent study conducted by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences have revealed the health and molecular benefits of this native flora Indian subcontinent tree. The Moringa tree is known as a miracle tree. Given to its property of providing important nutritional and medicinal benefits to the body, this tree is not only used in a variety of dishes, but also in herbal medication. The Moringa oleifera is a popular species of this tree that is used in different parts of the world. Although every part of the tree is put to use, it is the leaves that are the most beneficial. These are loaded with Vitamin A, B, C, and minerals. Besides these nutrients, they also contain essential amino acids, and are rich in protein required for daily functioning.

A Clean Slate
Detox and flush your way to weight loss and optimal health. by Aaron I. Garza
A clean slate – what is it really? Is it that moment you decide to wipe away the past and start over, or is it that favorable combination of circumstances that call for a new beginning? For many of us, it starts on a Sunday night after a “weekend blowout” that involved the tail end of a margarita or a slice of decadent dark chocolate cake. Mortified by our dietary relapse into the abyss, we stand in front of the mirror,
look ourselves squarely in the eye and say, “This is it; tomorrow, my diet starts for good!” Almost every woman we’ve worked with at PureLine Nutrition can relate to that. It’s not uncommon for us to feel like we are constantly at square one with our diet and weight-loss struggle. It’s not unusual to feel desperate, hopeless and frustrated with our bodies’ inability to cooperate with our clothes
The often-neglected first step can “reset” your

and our age. But the question truly is: What are we going to do about it? Moreover, what are you going to do about it? How do you finally pick up the pieces and start fresh? How do you create a “clean slate”? Like anything in life, whether it is learning to walk or building a relationship, we start with the basics – a first step. Now, it’s obvious that cardio, strength training and nutrition play an integral role in the equation, but what if we were to dive a little deeper? Much like a garden that requires us to prep the soil to plant, we must also prep the body to be ready for the changes to come. I’ve found that much of this comes internally through the elimination of toxic buildup (both physical and mental). Let’s take a step back and think about the systems responsible for greater weight loss, energy and health. Without a doubt, a huge emphasis can and should be placed on mental focus, positivity and follow-through, but for the sake of this article, let’s consider the physical. The major systems include the digestive system (mouth, stomach, liver, pancreas and intestines), the circulatory system (arteries, veins, heart, blood, kidneys and lungs) and the metabolic system (hormones, cells and metabolic pathways that synthesize nutrients and provide cellular energy). It’s quite a list, isn’t it? These systems are not something we readily think about when we go to the gym or decide to embark on a new diet, but in reality, if any of these systems are compromised, we drastically limit our fat loss and training potential. So what can we do to support the overall health and wellness of these systems while prepping for the weight-loss or training challenge to come? At PureLine, we call it Step 1: the overall detoxification and cleansing of the key vital centers in the body. Not only does this neutralize acidity and other harmful waste products, but it also ensures that our bodies are functioning at the highest level. This, of course, means greater weight loss and faster results. I love hearing our clients across Texas come back after taking Step 1, which sometimes includes an eight-day flush or a 30-day detoxification protocol, and say, “OMG, I’ve never had so much energy in my life! I thought I was doing everything right, but since I’ve taken the steps to detox and cleanse, I’ve started to drop weight faster and I don’t feel bloated anymore!” An interesting side note is that these individuals start to positively respond to their training, diets and supplementation. Body
fat starts to melt off, energy levels begin to soar and those cravings for late-night sweets begin to diminish. It truly is remarkable how this oftenneglected first step can “reset” your ability to improve your health and start burning fat. It’s not uncommon for a member of my team to do a body composition analysis pre-detox and then another post-detox, only to reveal a 10- to 15-pound drop in body fat, lower water retention and an improved BMI. If you haven’t taken the time to try a systematic detoxification and cleanse, I highly recommend you look into a system I personally designed called the PureCleanse System. This system (only available at PureLine Nutrition Stores and www.thepureline. com) is the most complete system currently available. The first component of the PureCleanse system is a liquid formula that offers a gentle, yet effective, eight-day flush. This saturates the body with a unique blend of natural components that ensure overall cleansing. The PureCleanse Liquid is followed by the PureCleanse Capsule Formulation, which offers continued detoxification support and promotes digestive health. The typical female will lose anywhere from 8 to 15 pounds following her first detox protocol; some can lose even more depending on whether they follow our Detox Diet, which is included with the system. I often recommend that both men and women try and incorporate this system once every three months for continued metabolic, digestive and circulatory health. If you’ve tried everything and just can’t seem to get the last 10 to 15 pounds of weight off or if you suffer from severe energy droughts throughout the day, a detox and cleanse is definitely the solution. Whether you’re starting a new program or you just need to start with a clean slate, you owe it to yourself to take this crucial step to optimizing your health today. ✽

The Power
A
of the Mind
quote by Olympic legend Paavo Nurmi sits very prominently in one of Jennifer Rulon’s blogs. It’s in big, bold letters, and it’s hard to avoid. It’s also one of the first things that caught my eye while scanning her Web page. The quote says, “Mind is everything. Muscle – pieces of rubber. All that I am, I am because of my mind.” I might not have fully understood its significance had I read this quote prior to speaking with Rulon. In fact, I would have skimmed the quote and moved on. But after meeting Rulon, I can tell you that this quote defines everything she is and everything she believes in. Fitness truly starts with the mind. From there, it emerges into physical, mental and emotional strength – she is living proof of that.
Rulon is a trainer, an athlete, a wife, a friend and a motivator to many who have crossed paths with her. She’s the type of gal you feel at ease with. Despite her intimidating, yet impressive fitness résumé, Rulon truly is the girl next door. Her fitness background is awe-inspiring. Rulon began competing in triathlons nearly 20 years ago, with the hopes that she would complete an Ironman by the time she turned 30 – and she did in 2002. At the age of 29, she competed in Ironman Wisconsin, just a few months shy of her milestone birthday. But fitness wasn’t her only passion. “When I was in the seventh grade, I wanted to work with marine animals,” Rulon said. And she did. From 1997 to 2009, she fulfilled her childhood dream by landing a job
with SeaWorld, and for 14 years, she built up confidence and stamina through training and working closely with mammals. “You have to have confidence to work with marine animals,” she explained. “When you start a training session or a show with these animals, there’s a level of confidence you must show them because they need to know that you’re going to take care of them.” SeaWorld proved to be the perfect fit for Rulon at the time. Her passion for nurturing mammals helped her realize just how much she wanted to help people, too. SeaWorld was gracious to allow her time off so that she could continue her fitness training and competing in places like Florida and Brazil. After realizing she wanted to be a coach fulltime, in 2010, she pursued a Master’s of Science in kinesiology

with an emphasis on exercise science at UTSA. Today, Rulon has been a USA triathlon level one coach since 2001, and has successfully competed in numerous triathlons, four Ironman triathlons (Wisconsin, Florida, Brazil and Western Australia) and in many duathlons, including the 2001 Duathlon World Championship in the Netherlands. To add to her already distinguished résumé, Rulon is also a CrossFit level one coach. “I love fitness, and I love being healthy,” Rulon said. “I love how I feel after a run, a lift, a bike and a swim. I love how the human body works, too. As
“Most triathletes will swim, bike, run and not do much lifting or HIT (highintensity training) workouts in the gym because they don’t know what to do,” Rulon explained. “I came up with the E-Fit program to fix that. I want to see athletes lift and do quick high-intensity sessions. Triathletes need to learn how to go into that uncomfortable feeling of those HIT sessions because physically and mentally, that will get them to the finish line. “I also want to see my athletes gain strength in order to improve their posterior chain and see less injuries. I want triathletes to have more body awareness
Rulon’s passion goes beyond simple physical fitness. an athlete, the body needs to be trained for specific events and races. The body needs to learn how to take on a heavy stress load, but it also needs to learn how to recover. Most importantly, the body and the mind need to learn how to rest.” It’s no secret that Rulon’s passion goes beyond simple physical fitness. She has invested time and money in learning the science of how the human body works, when related to exercise. “As a coach, I have been in a lab, and I have been in the real world when it comes to triathlon training, CrossFit training, nutrition and competing,” Rulon said. “I will always go back to the science of it all. The studies out there that are based on training are crucial and very informative. I think we, as coaches, forget to go back to the basics. We need to remember where it all began … in the lab.” This passion, coupled with physical fitness knowhow, was the perfect foundation for Rulon’s latest venture. In January 2013, she started a brand-new program called E-Fit, which stands for Endurance Fitness. The program primarily focuses on strength and conditioning for endurance athletes. Rulon, being an endurance athlete herself, was inspired to begin this program after training for Ironman Florida.
overall than just in a pool, on a bike or on the pavement.” The basis of E-Fit all began with Rulon’s passion for CrossFit, which she discovered in 2009. CrossFit’s original founder, Greg Glassman, defines his workout regime as “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement.” Glassman’s now-popular workout was the impetus that ultimately led to Rulon’s E-Fit program. It was also a switch from the typical triathlon training she was used to. The one thing she liked most about CrossFit: It didn’t require a tremendous amount of thought – something Rulon was looking for in 2009. Just a year earlier, Rulon faced tremendous loss in her personal life. Her father passed away in 2008, and she suffered two miscarriages that same year. This, of course, took a toll on her emotionally, mentally and physically. She needed to find solace through another avenue – one that didn’t require her to be alone with her thoughts. “Training can be mentally draining when you don’t have interaction,” Rulon said. “I always encourage people to train by themselves because in an Ironman and a half Ironman, they will not have people to talk to. But in 2009, I took a sabbatical from training. »

fter my father’s death and after two miscarriages, I didn’t want to be alone in my thoughts. I needed to find something else to occupy my time. That’s when a friend introduced me to CrossFit. It was so different. You’re not training alone. And you don’t think about it – you just do it. That’s exactly what I needed.” CrossFit and HIT sessions taught Rulon the importance of strength and endurance training – all of which she includes in her E-Fit pro-
her a few years. “My time will come,” she said. “I have faith, support from my husband, from my family and friends, I have strength both physically and mentally and I have a good training plan.” As for E-Fit, she hopes to take her carefully structured program from local gyms to across the globe. “Right now, I am building E-Fit within the San Antonio triathlon/endurance community,” Rulon said. “But I would love to see my program go global some day. My momma always told me to dream big. So I am.” And then there are clients like Analia Voss, who credits Rulon for her increased confidence
Rulon has designed her program to produce optimum results for those who train with her. gram today. It also taught her how to be both physically and mentally stronger. “Because of CrossFit, I am able to get past that uncomfortable feeling in my training and racing,” Rulon said. “And now I want to educate the endurance community on the importance of strength. I would have never seen that unless I didn’t start with CrossFit first.” Today, Rulon has set new goals for herself, both personally and professionally. She hopes to qualify for Ironman Hawaii, even if it takes
to train hard, despite how challenging it can be at times. “My journey with Coach Jen started two years ago when I decided that I wanted to become an Ironman in 2012, despite having never swam or cycled a day in my life,” Voss said. “From the first day we met at the pool, she saw my poor technique in freestyle. But Coach Jen never gave up on me. She assured me that if I follow her training program, I could reach my goal. She truly believed in me, and that inspired

me to believe in myself.” Rulon’s scientifically based E-Fit program has helped numerous clients realize their potential. She has designed her program to fit the needs of each and every individual, which have produced optimum results for those who train with her. Going back to the science of it all, Rulon keeps a close and careful eye on her clients. She carefully observes each one and then she adjusts the training methods to fit the needs of whom she is working with. Fitness, to Rulon, must be measured correctly in the same way a scientist would measure formulas to build a compound. Her scientific approach is proof that she takes the human body – and her clients – very seriously. “Coach Jen’s approach to training is more than just swim, bike and run,” Voss explained. “She makes sure that you follow a carefully designed program that she implemented specifically for endurance athletes. This program not only helps with correct body alignment, but it also gives you that mental edge you need to push through the tough moments on race day.” Rulon’s desire to motivate and inspire people is what clients love best about her blog and her program. She has a way of motivating people to
take on the toughest physical challenges. When you feel like giving up, she is your cheerleader, your inspiration and the one on the sidelines telling you to finish the race. She is the one urging you to push through and keep going. For those who have never trained before, but would like to compete in a triathlon some day, Rulon offers some words of wisdom: “My advice is to set a goal and sign up for a race. Be smart about your goals. You must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. If you have never done a triathlon, don’t sign up for an Ironman that same year. Work your way up to a longer distance event, enjoy the journey to get ready for an Ironman and look at a good year to do so. Enjoy your training and racing. “You do these events because you can. You have the body and the heart to move on a daily basis. I tell my athletes to ‘race your own race.’ Do a triathlon because you want to, not because you have to. You are given a gift to enjoy the triathlon journey … embrace every moment of it.” ✽ For more information, log on to www.jenrulon. com or send an email to jen@jenrulon.com.

Eliminating Excuses
The City of San Antonio’s Parks & Recreation Department allows San Antonians to stay get healthy and stay active without breaking the bank with the Fitness in the Park program. Special to NFit with obesity having reached epidemic levels and a rise in related illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, it’s no surprise that making time to stay physically active and healthy has become an important focus in today’s society. Today, close to 50 million Americans are members of fitness centers or clubs, part of a $21 billion industry. Whether it’s joining a gym or trying the latest diet craze, staying fit can be expensive. The average cost of a gym membership is around $45 a month, not to mention additional charges for enrollment and extra specialty classes. This is one reason many are turning toward the growing trend of taking part in more running,

“at-home fitness” programs and other low-cost and free fitness solutions. The City of San Antonio has an alternative for those looking to make a healthy change without breaking the bank. The city’s Parks & Recreation Department’s Fitness in the Park program offers fitness and exercise classes in all areas of the city at no cost. The program, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Fitness Council, is offered in various locations throughout San Antonio and open to anyone who has a desire to get in shape, regardless of fitness level or experience. Through partnerships with volunteers and fitness organizations from around the city, Fitness in
the Park offers a wide range of classes, including zumba, yoga, aerobics, boot camp fitness sessions, cross-training, walking groups, youth fitness classes and more. Classes take place six days a week in parks and community centers, which make these free offerings accessible to just about everyone. All classes are taught by qualified exercise instructors who are dedicated to making San Antonio a healthier community. “There are no more excuses,” says Community Services Supervisor Travis Davey, who was recently hired to oversee the Fitness in the Park program. “Free fitness classes are being offered by qualified instructors all over town.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
There is no registration required. You just have to show up, sign in and workout. It’s really that simple.” The program even offers classes the whole family can attend together such as Family Friendly Yoga, Trail Hiking and several walking groups. Attending these classes with family or friends is a great way to spend quality time together, model healthy living habits and get a great workout. Part of the appeal of group exercise outside in a park is getting away from the ordinary surroundings the gym offers. “An important part of maintaining a workout routine is making it feel like you’re not working out,” Davey says. “When you enjoy working out, it feels more like a night out on the town with friends and less like a chore. Why pay to go to the gym when you can come out to a beautiful park and have just as rewarding of an experience for free?” With new classes being added to the schedule each month, Fitness in the Park continues to expand in both the variety of classes offered and new locations in San Antonio. More than 5,000 people attended classes in 2012, and due to the great response from the community, that mark has already been surpassed in 2013. In addition to the Fitness in the Park program, San Antonio’s park system has recently added outdoor fitness equipment stations in 30 parks, meaning you can get a workout every day without ever having to pay for another fitness membership again. ✽

talented and determined, Texas Olympic swimming hopeful Raquel Grays has been a consistently dominant force in Alamo Area Aquatic and 5A Texas high school swimming for the past two years, and this summer, she’s set her gaze far beyond a senior year repeat performance. Grays was already swimming at 2 years old, and by 10 years old, she was swimming competitively. Her parents encouraged her to participate in a plethora of sports and activities when she was younger, including – but not limited to – basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and dance. It wasn’t until her freshman year in high school that, after being exposed to a taste of every sport, Grays realized competitive swimming was “the one” for her. She has been swimming for the Alamo Area Aquatic Association’s club swim team in San Antonio since 2006, and she is Johnson High School’s only state champion in the school’s four-year 5A history. On Feb. 23, 2013, with a time of 23.37 seconds (a Johnson High School record time), Grays secured a 0.06 second advantage over her opposition to claim the state gold in the 50-meter freestyle event. “There are no words to describe the way I felt,” Grays recalls. “It was so close” and a “weight off my shoulders.” Later that day, she placed silver in the 100-meter freestyle, setting another school record as the only Johnson athlete to place twice at a state event. Grays’ strongest competition at state came from her peers on her club swimming team, which created a dynamic competitive environment that pushed all participating swimmers to exert their fullest effort. “Being the first athlete in any sport at Johnson to win a gold medal, to have that title forever ... It’s the
best feeling,” she says. The Johnson state champion’s training schedule is extremely demanding, as she trains both in and out of the water for four hours a day, six days a week. She is a sprint-focused swimmer who depends much more on aggressive acceleration and overall velocity than a distance swimmer does, so her training is adapted to suit the development of this tempo. But when it comes time to manage her academic priorities, Grays is definitely not a fish out of water. Even with her hectic and disciplined swimming schedule, she is still able to do all of her homework and study for every test. Grays plans to enroll in a physical therapy program after completing her undergraduate degree, and of course, she plans on becoming a Division I NCAA swimmer. You can most likely expect Grays to be committed to swim for a specific NCAA school by November. Besides preparing for a senior year repeat of her junior year championship performance, Grays has loftier goals in focus. “Although I won state, I haven’t reached the goals I’ve set for myself,” she says. “I anticipate working twice as hard to make a run for the gold my senior year, and this time, I will be more focused on my personal times.” With passion and focus, Grays continues to train and push herself to new levels, and like most swimmers of her ability, she has big dreams of Olympic gold. “The thing that helps me the most is being confident,” Grays says. “I believe in myself and have great support from my coach, my teammates and my parents.” With this type of self-discipline, ambition and parental support, it would appear Grays is more on track than ever to reach her goals. ✽

Going Beyond Bendy by Miki Bowers
There is an ancient philosophy behind yoga as a life practice. The physical postures the West has fallen in love with are only a gateway drug to the sutras, meditation and the internal journey that leads us to peace. One of the many definitions of yoga is ceasing the fluctuations of the mind – evenness. And we want to cease the fluctuations of the mind to become one with peace, joy, love and the divine. What I didn’t know about yoga when I first began my Ashtanga practice is what now has me captivated. Ceasing the fluctuations of the mind allows us to have a single-pointed focus. This could be anything you choose to focus on. Ultimately, the practice and focus will lead you to finding your true self. The self is not the brain/ mind/ego that we believe is who we are, but the essence of us that can never be destroyed. One of my favorite Eckhart Tolle quotes is: “Dying is the stripping away of all that is not you.” What is left, even after death, is our true nature: the self. This is the divine (God, consciousness, the universe) in all of us. We seek happiness and joy outside of ourselves. We believe in the material and the dramatic. We think a relationship, a house, a car, a big bank account and/or a beautiful body will fulfill us, but this is all an illusion. The mind tries to tie our identity to what we do and have. But all of those things can be taken away or lost. The essence of what beats our hearts and brings new life in the spring cannot be taken away or lost. The life force that is our existence is eternal. It cares

to love without fear, live without worry and constantly be at peace. So how does a sequence of stretchy postures do that for us? The postures alone won’t; it must become a practice. As with any practice, the more time you spend, the deeper you go. A regular practice awakens something inside. You find a place of peace after 90 minutes of intentional breathing, and you want more. This craving may lead to the philosophy, or at least to an understanding that your yoga class is something everyone in your life is glad you’ve found. But for those of you who want more, know that the practice of yoga beyond asana (postures) has a lifetime’s worth of instruction to find peace. Some will go for the stretch and to be able to contort their bodies in ways that leave their friends and family awestruck. And many have found the therapeutic benefits on a number of levels with the physical body. But next time you’re in your yoga class, consider that this practice has the potential to change your whole universe – and most importantly, to show you that the entire universe is in you. Namaste. ✽

nothing for what we have. All of the externals eventually fade away, including our physical bodies. But the eternal remains. Joy and peace are found in that which cannot be shaken by time or circumstance. The practice of yoga takes us to a place where we can touch the eternal within ourselves. It quiets the mind and brings our focus inward. We truly look at ourselves and what our minds tell us about life each time we step on the mat, and then we overcome. Yoga teaches us how to face ourselves and to move beyond our fears and misunderstandings. It points out our patterns and gives us the strength to drop them. It teaches us awareness that allows us to be in the present moment and experience reality. It shows us the tricks and illusions of the mind and how to use the mind as a tool rather than get used by it. It offers liberation from suffering and attachment to this world. And you thought you were just getting a good stretch! Yoga is getting your mind/ego out of the way so you can be your true self. We suffer so much from what our minds tell us. We believe what our minds say about ourselves and others without ever questioning the validity. It’s not valid! It’s simply an opinion – a conditioned response to external stimuli. Your thoughts are not reality. They exist only in your head. Your opinions and judgment are not truth. The stories we all make up in our heads are just that: stories. Yet we live our entire lives as if every bit of it is real. Putting the mind back where it belongs – a tool in the toolbox – allows us to be in this very moment, which is absolutely all we have anyway. It allows us

A teacher at heart with a passion for Zumba, Kelly Smith impacts the lives of both her students and the Seguin community through her efforts at Miss Kelly Studio. by Rita Hernandez

NFIT WOMAN july/august 2013
What does it take to be an Inspiration 4 Life Healthy Side of Life Hero? Simple! A heart of gold and a passion to make an impact in your own life or to change the life of someone else in need by setting an example of living a healthy lifestyle. Because of her passion and heart of gold, Kelly Smith is our next Healthy Side of Life Hero. I met Smith at an event in October 2012, and just from speaking to her, I knew there was something special about her that would make an impact in my life. Smith is simply an inspirational person who has a beautiful light that shines from within. I love that she humbly speaks about herself in her conversations, but it is more of what she does to help those in the communities of Seguin. She has this beautiful smile that she carries through in all of her pictures, and she explained to me that even through some tough and sad times, she has still carried her smile. Smith is an amazing and talented Zumba instructor who has pretty much every certification except Aqua Zumba. All I have to say is “wow!” Smith has been an instructor since 2008, and she opened her own studio in 2011. Previously a schoolteacher, Smith would take Zumba classes because she felt she had not always been extremely healthy. Overall, she lost 50 pounds. She knew this was something she wanted to hold on to because it kept her going and it was fun for her. Smith loved that as a schoolteacher, she could take time with her students during the day, but that after a long stressful day, she could make time to play with her students after school and release the stress in a healthy way. She loved it so much that she decided to get Zumba certified. Once certified, she loved what it did for her and the diversity of her classroom. She loved that Zumba brought in all ages of men, women and children. She loved it when she could encourage others to believe in themselves. It helped her in many ways to believe in herself, and it really encouraged her to be the leader she is today.
{
“Generosity is an attribute of being a healthy person.”
Smith’s first Zumba convention encouraged her to open Miss Kelly Studio in Seguin. She definitely saw the big picture and all of the other instructors who came from all over the world. They shared the same passion: to help inspire others to live a healthy lifestyle and having fun doing it. It was great to hear that Smith loves to have Zumba fundraisers to help raise money for organizations. Her first fundraiser was to help the Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society. She was so fired up and excited about going above and beyond to help others in need. Even at her grand opening, she created a Zumbathon to set the pace for her town in Seguin. Be ready for more to come! “Generosity is an attribute of being a healthy person,” Smith says, “and people feel better about themselves whenever they are able to do something to help somebody else.” I find it very sweet to know that the Zumbatomic certification is Smith’s favorite, simply because with this class in particular, you work with children. Since Smith has the heart of a teacher, this explains it all. It really does take a lot of passion and dedication to work with children, and she definitely has what it takes. What’s even more inspiring is that Smith traveled all the way from Seguin to West Virginia to get her Zumbatomic certification. Wow! Now that’s dedication! Smith plans on continuing to have Zumba fundraisers to help many charities – and to top that off, she is involved in helping the city of Seguin by offering free Zumba classes, as well. I’ve already taken the road trip to see Smith in action. Will you? Thank you, Kelly Smith, for being our Inspiration 4 Life Healthy Side of Life Hero. ✽

Fit for Beauty
The One Beauty Lounge offers some tips and tricks for looking young, getting glam and breaking the rules this summer. by Danielle Cunningham
Makeup Tricks for Looking Younger § Do not put powder under the eyes because it causes more wrinkles. § Never use a matte foundation. Use a creamy anti-aging foundation. § Put concealer under the eyebrow bone. Using an eyebrow pencil on the top of your brow gives your eye a mini lift to give the appearance of a younger eye.
§ Never put shimmer on the crease of your eye, and never use shimmer in your blush. § Wearing BB cream down to your neck and chest will make you look younger to hide those age spots and wrinkles. § Never over-pluck your eyebrows. The thinner your brows are, the older you will look.
DIY Beauty Tips to Get You Glam For thicker and shinier hair: Here is a home remedy for a deep conditioning and strength treatment: Mix 1 egg, 3 tablespoons of milk and 3 tablespoons of honey, and put it on your hair and scalp for 15 minutes. If your hair is still not as thick as you would like, hair extensions are always a girl’s best friend in making your hair look amazing. Thicker hair makes you look younger. For whiter teeth: This strawberry teeth whitening DIY trick will make your teeth awesome. Mix baking soda and strawberries together and leave on your teeth for 15 minutes. To remove buildup in your hair: Mix a cup of apple cider vinegar with a quarter of lemon juice. Work the mix through dry hair, pre-shampoo. To apply lashes: Put lash glue on with eyeliner brush and place the lashes on the glue that you just put on your eyelid. Then line with black eyeliner. Any imperfections are hidden with the black eyeliner – practice makes perfect.

10 Beauty Rules to Break Rule No. 1: Wash your hair with cold water. Go ahead, ladies – enjoy your hot showers. You use heat on your hair when you dry it. The key to having healthy hair is the products you use on your hair before you blow dry your hair. Try “It’s a 10” leave-in conditioning. This helps seal the cuticles, reduce frizziness and keep color longer. A smoothing mist will also help with little baby hairs and make your hair look healthier.
Rule No. 2: Don’t tweeze above the eyebrow because it will ruin the arch. Pluck away. Any stragglers above your brows can create a shadow, and as a result, the shape of your brows won’t look as clean and defined. For mistakeproof grooming above the brow, The One Beauty Lounge suggests this trick: Brush brows into place, then go over them with a white makeup pencil. Strays above the whitened area can be tweezed without disrupting the line of your brows. Pluck one hair at a time, using a good pair of tweezers. One of our favorites: Tweezerman Slant Tweezers.
Rule No. 3: Dark roots on dyed hair look tacky – don’t let yours show. This is a rule you can break, and in fact, two-toned hair is really in right now. The concept is called “ombre” hair, and it basically looks like you’ve waited a month or two too long between highlight appointments. The roots are dark, but the hair gets lighter toward the ends. Sarah Jessica Parker and Hilary Swank both have the “intentional dark roots” look going on right now. Try L’Oreal Feria Wild Ombre Hair Color, Medium to Dark Brown. You may still prefer to have roots that match your ends, but don’t feel that this is the beauty must that it used to be. Rule No. 4: Don’t wear lipstick without lip liner. Most shades, especially creamy formulas, look more natural if you skip the liner. To help lip color go on neatly, The One Beauty Lounge suggests that you apply your lipstick with a lip brush. (Use lip liner when your lipstick is a very dark or super-bright shade. Deep hues have more pigment, which tends to wander, so liner creates a barrier.)
Rule No. 5: Apply blush only to the apple of your cheeks. Go ahead and break this rule; it’s all about contouring. If you have a perfectly oval face shape, stick with the apples. For the rest of us, here are a few strategies for various face shapes. Square: Brush blusher just under the cheekbones. Round: Sweep blusher along cheekbones, up toward the temples. And heart-shaped: Start at the outer eye corners and glide toward the temples. You can also do this with a matte bronzer. Rule No. 6: Don’t wear blue eyeshadow because it looks dated. Wear any blue you want. The brighter, the better – that’s what’s in this summer. Ladies, don’t be afraid of color. Go bright! Rule No. 7: You have to match your brows to your hair color. Fill in your eyebrows. The brows frame your face. You don’t have to match them to your hair color all the time. Sometimes it’s better to go a shade darker to frame the face and make the eyes pop.
Rule No. 9: You should choose cosmetic colors based on whether you have a “warm” or a “cool” skin tone. Can you honestly say you’ve figured out which tone you are – and what that means in terms of which eyeshadow, blush and lipstick hues you should choose? Warm vs. cool is really most important when you’re picking foundation and concealer. Most fair-skinned people fall under the “cool” category because they don’t generally have golden undertones. But you can break the rules with colorful makeup like lipstick and blush. For example, an African-American woman with a very warm complexion might find that a dark lavender lipstick – a very “cool” shade – looks fabulous because of the contrast with her skin tone. So if you think a color looks great on your face, go ahead and give it a try! Rule No. 10: Match your foundation to your cheeks or hands. Finding the perfect foundation color is tough, especially if you don’t know what color you’re matching. Your hands get exposed to a lot more UV light and a lot less exfoliation than your face, so they tend to be darker. Also due to sun exposure and environmental stress, the skin on your face can be a slightly different color than the rest of your body. Foundation that matches your neck will be the best blend to seamlessly match all exposed areas of skin. Test stripes of foundation on the jaw line in natural light to find your best match.
Eyeshadows and lip gloss so vibrant they could stop traffic! That is the summer trend everyone is talking about. What about a blue mascara that actually looks blue on your eyelashes? Fifty percent of women say they feel sexier the moment they apply eye makeup or lipstick, so why not add some bold colors to complete the trend?
The Bottom Line
Rule No. 8: Drink lots of water to hydrate and make your skin glow. It’s true that being dehydrated does nothing pretty for your complexion, but drinking excessive quantities of water (beyond the eight or so glasses generally recommended) will only lead to superfluous bathroom visits – not plump, perky skin. A better way to prevent dry skin is to cut back on water – the scalding water in your shower, that is. Though drinking water does offer plenty of health benefits, the best way to keep skin hydrated is by preventing evaporation. So avoid those long, hot wintertime showers, and whenever you do shower, moisturize your skin while it’s still damp.
then glide on a creamy lipstick.
Bright Ideas
Flip your black kohl eyeliner. We recommend using liner to create a crayon-like soft edge. Balance the intense eye with a nude lipstick and coral powder on the cheeks and forehead. Keep the shimmer to a minimum.
Drop-dead Gorgeous
Bring back the pinup look to create this fresh-face/redlip duo. It’s a classic look that requires very little makeup. All you need is a bronzer to warm up the skin and a light shade of eyeshadow. For lips, start with an orangey red liner,
Purple Gaze
This dramatic evening look was shot in the ‘70s. When picking a shade, avoid violets with too much red, as they tend to appear garish. Add a healthy flush with a dusty pink matte blush. A muted rose blush will give your face an almost porcelain-doll look that accentuates your eyes.
Blues Clues
This look is for the woman who is all about fun. Start with a black liquid liner to define the shape of eyes, followed by a kohl pencil and color shadow to add texture. When selecting any shade of blue, always consider your skin tone. Pale skin types will benefit from cooler blues, which give the look a more smoldering quality. ✽ The One Beauty Lounge is located at 5148 Broadway, Ste. A, San Antonio, Texas 78209. NFit: How can I make my eyes pop with eyeliner?

{
Cunningham: Draw a thin line with eyeliner around the top and bottom lashes. Put creamy black eyeliner on the water line and then again go in with a black powder eyeliner to get the ultimate black-liner and smokey eye look, which will make your eyes pop. Try Sephora’s retractable waterproof pencils and any black eyeshadow powder to achieve this look.
NFit: I bought the wrong foundation shade. How can I lighten it, or is that not possible?
Cunningham: You can mix a lotion in your foundation to make it lighter. If it is still too dark, buy a foundation shade four times lighter and mix it yourself until it’s the shade you need.
Staying out of the sun will make your
freckles look lighter and prevent skin damage. NFit: How can I highlight and contour in a quick way? Cunningham: Contouring and highlighting are some of the oldest tricks in the makeup industry. They help sculpt your face to enhance your natural shadows and bone structure. However, contouring is one of the most frequently left-out steps in makeup applications. Contouring is something that can go badly wrong, if done incorrectly. However, it is easily doable for anyone with just a few simple tips. Highlighting works with contouring. For example, when you contour your cheeks, you apply contour in the hallow area and highlight the apples. You also highlight the brow bone to open the eye and give depth to the crease area. To contour the nose: To slim your nose, apply the contouring shade on each side of your nose, blending carefully, and the highlighter down the center of your nose. To contour the cheekbones: To enhance the cheekbones, suck in your cheeks, apply a darker shade to the hollows and apply a highlighter to the top of the cheekbones. Then apply blush as usual. Don’t overdo it! To contour the forehead: If you have a wide forehead, apply a light bronzer to each temple and blend. This will create a shadow effect, causing the head to look more rounded. To contour the chin: For a small, thin chin, apply highlighter to the center of the chin, directly under the center of the lip. To minimize a double chin, apply bronzer along the jaw line and blend it down toward your neck. This creates depth and helps strengthen the jaw line. You should always apply contouring color on your neck to your shirt line to avoid a “mask” look. To contour the eyes: Use at the back corner of the eye, going upward toward the temple. To contour the lips: To slim full lips, apply a deep shade of lip color to the entire lip. If you want to plump up thin lips, apply a light lip color with shimmer or gloss. Then apply highlighter between the peaks of the upper lip and below the center of the lower lip. This makes thin lips look full and gives a pouty appearance.
Cunningham: Wear an SPF of 30. Staying out of the sun will make your freckles lighter and prevent skin damage. Use a heavy cream foundation like The One foundation, which has an SPF and the ultimate coverage. Applying mineral foundation on top will give you the ultimate no-freckles look. Don’t forget to apply a blush and/or bronzer to add color to your face.
NFit: How can I hide my freckles?
Cunningham: Invest in a brand of concealer or foundation that does not leave your skin feeling thick and clogged. Start by using a green contouring concealer to cover the redness, then apply foundation using a shade that exactly matches your skin. You can also try a cream concealer that matches your skin by applying it over the top of your redness before applying foundation and finishing if off with a loose face powder.
NFit: How can I hide the redness in my face?
NFit: Will oil break me out?
Cunningham: Not if you use the right kind of oils. There are tons of remedies such as the olive oil method. Green tea oils actually help your skin, as well. There are defiant mixed reviews, but I am a huge fan of Manuka Honey. It’s hydrating, but it takes the infection out of your acne and helps with any scarring. This is great for mature skin because a lot of women suffer from adult acne. Try Purity Botanicals Liquid Gold healing serum; this product has a combination of different healing oils that will take away any breakout, as well as hydrate your skin. ✽

When husband-and-wife team Shane and Wayne Evans founded Massage Heights (a premium membership-based massage franchise company whose first location opened in Alamo Heights in 2004), their mission was to help people elevate their lives through the numerous health benefits of regular therapeutic massage. In 2012, Massage Heights became a sponsor of the American Cancer Society Chicago Marathon DetermiNation team in support of their efforts toward cancer-related causes, and held their first nationwide donation day event, upholding the company’s commitment to giving back to organizations that support health- and wellness-related causes. On Tuesday, July 16, 2013, as part of the Cause Partnership program with the American Cancer Society, Massage Heights Retreats across the country will throw a daylong birthday celebration for the American Cancer
Society, celebrating 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays. On this day, participating San Antonio Retreats will contribute $10 from every one-hour $49.99 massage and $59.99 facial to the American Cancer Society, with a goal of raising $100,000 nationwide. “Nearly everybody is affected by cancer, whether they’ve been diagnosed or they know somebody that has been diagnosed, so I’m thrilled that Massage Heights is hosting this birthday celebration for the American Cancer Society,” said Shane Evans, who serves as the company’s COO. “To join in celebrating 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays, give yourself the gift of massage and elevate the everyday. In return, you’ll be helping the American Cancer Society finish the fight against cancer.”
“To celebrate 100 years of creating more birthdays, give yourself the gift of massage and elevate the everyday.” Reservations have been accepted as of June 4 on a first-come, first-served basis, and the Retreats expect to be fully appointed. To schedule an appointment for a massage or facial, contact the nearest San Antonio Retreat by visiting www.massageheights. com/sanantonio. All proceeds contributed during this event will support the American Cancer Society in its mission to finish the fight against cancer. Additionally, during the event, Massage Heights will contribute 10 percent of all Dermalogica products sold at participating Body + Face locations to the American Cancer Society. One hundred years ago, the American Cancer Society began the fight
of a lifetime: the fight against cancer. Massage Heights has joined them to finish the fight and encourages local San Antonio residents to join them on July 16. ✽ For more information, visit www.massageheights.com/our-company/giving.aspx or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/massageheights.
