Episode 36: When It Spills It Pours or Spilt Milk Part Duex Starring: Constance & Conrad

~The Contented Collegiate Cows of Northfield~ Having left Hogan Bros., later on Co. Rd. 3...

Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party by Sherri Faye (c)2011 So, last month I wrote about letting go of old stuff, no regrets, and the lot. I had a lot more to get rid of than I thought (mostly stuff, a few regrets)! I continue to pack up bags and boxes of memorabilia, assorted knick-knacks, clothes that I haven’t worn in forever... I’m saving some cherished items, others will be forwarded to my daughters. I wouldn’t want to deprive them of going through this process 20 or so years down the road! Most of the old clothes and such are being picked up by veteran’s charities. Some stuff is headed straight for the trash heap. I have to admit that nobody will likely want any of the 10,000 shirts and baggy pants splattered with a gazillion paint stains - why I have hung on to ‘em all these years is a mystery... I mean, just a few on hand is sufficient, right!? A coupla really cool t-shirts are being stashed aside because, well, they are cool after all... and I make these one-of-a-kind bead-trimmed pillows out of them, which are also cool. As I purge and re-purpose my belongings, I simultaneously heal old wounds and embrace joyful memories. It’s very liberating. Let Go, Or Be Dragged

(on a magnet I have on the fridge - the magnet stays)

All original material because the best things are still hand made. Chris Trifilio guitar and vocals, John Gagich drums and Bryan Vann bass. Influences include the Grateful Dead, Santana, Zeppelin, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Luna, Wilco, The Pixies, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark and U2. Jeff Ray • 8-11:30pm

The Tavern Lounge Mighty fine guitar and harp. Ray walks a thin line between blues and folk, one minute strutting a slide-guitar ballad on the resonator guitar, the next minute blasting off into a one-man-band train ride. “Ray has a quality that could only come by blending the birthplaces of Bob Dylan and the blues.” (Des Moines Register). Travel the World From Right Here at Home Passport not current? No matter; join the Children’s Culture Connection’s annual fundraiser event on July 23rd for an afternoon’s global tour. This phenomenal organization – founded by local Dina Fesler –connects kids planet-wide with the goal of helping them find their voices to make the world a better place for all. The fundraiser, held in Dennison from 2-5 at the Fesler farm, is jam-packed with international goodies, gifts, a silent auction and information on the CCC’s work, including their internationally themed summer camp coming in August to Northfield. For tickets and information, call Joanne Cryer or e-mail joanne.cryer@live.com. To learn more about this extraordinary organization, go to www.childrenscultureconnection.org. This is proof that good works. It really, truly does.

Finding Your Cool with 13!

Celebrate the joy – and the pain – of growing up with the delightful teen musical 13, presented by the Northfield Arts Guild and directed by Rachel Haider. This high-energy show explores the journey we all take while finding out who we are, and features a talented and enormously appealing young cast. The show opens on July 14, runs weekends through the 24th, and is performed at the Arts Guild Theater at 411 West 3rd. For tickets and information call 645-8877 or go to www.northfieldartsguild. org. And have a blast.

Stop! Drop! And Crawl! to Summer’s Freshest Downtown Art

Join us on July 8 for an evening of art downtown as the Northfield Entertainment Guide presents the Northfield Art Crawl, a fresh and eclectic gathering of artists and art galleries. The crawl runs from 5-9 pm; the exhibitions include the WWW exhibit at the Northfield Arts Guild, artwork from the Children’s Culture Connection at the HideAway, Carla Thompson at the Marybeth Coyle Studio and our own Nick Sinclair at By All Means Graphics. Plus more – lots more. Best bet is to make an evening of it and stroll through all the participating galleries. All the information you need to know can be found on the Entertainment Guide’s Facebook page. Like us while you’re there.

Tour the Restored Elegance of Northfield’s Grande Dame Hotel

You know you want to see it, and the Archer House is inviting you in. Join them on July 8 for a tour through the newly renovated hotel – one of the longest continually operating hotels in the state – and see the magic of its 19th century beginnings recaptured. Restorations include tin ceilings and resurfaced claw foot tubs, period-inspired colors, lighting and furniture; a marriage of historic elegance and contemporary comfort. The tour runs from 5-7 and includes appetizers and wine. The tour is free of charge; the inspiration for your own home’s renovation is likewise.

Music to Soothe the Savage Hump-Day

Looking for that mid-week break to elevate your spirits and calm your jangled nerves? Look no further than the Northfield Noontime Organ Recitals 2011. This is the fifth season of this popular recital series; the music is lush and the settings – various churches and chapels throughout Northfield – are serene. The Noontime Recitals begin on July 6 and run through August 10. For more information, contact Richard Collman at 507/645-1357, or e-mail him at rkcollman@msn.com. And make summer Wednesdays at noon your respite from the rat race.

Advertising family fun, food, education and animals, it’s a celebration of country life that can’t be faked; from live music to livestock, rides, exhibitions and a marionette troupe, this is a family friendly festival that’s guaranteed to deliver a good time. It runs from July 19-24 in Faribault, and all the information, including entertainment schedules and the Premium Book with Open Class and 4-H, is online at www.ricecountyfair.net. HISTORIC

HAPPENINGS

NORTHFIELD STYLE By Susan Hvistendahl

Bridge Square Post Office, Pride of Northfield by Susan Hvistendahl

The headline of the Northfield News ran across the top of the entire front page on Oct. 30, 1936: “New Postoffice Building Completed.” There were four subheadings: “Public Invited To Join ‘Open House’ Today; Open House To Be Conducted By Postmaster Heibel And Assistants; Convenience And Beauty Stressed; Northfield’s Federal Building Unique in Appointments And Architecture.” Word that this iconic structure which faces diagonally toward the Cannon River and Bridge Square may no longer be used as a post office has hit many Northfielders hard. At the time of its opening, the town took great pride in the construction of the building, built at a cost of $87,444.15, with $31,000 additional for the site, according to the article. The post office moved from the MacKay Building at 314 S. Division St., where it had been housed since March of 1925. The change fulfilled hopes that went back 25 years, said the News, but the wait was worth it because the “new building is unique in its design and unusually well placed.”

Northfield’s postal history goes back to the first office a mile and a half west of Northfield called “Fountain Grove.” It was established in the fall of 1855, the year in which John North founded the town. On May 15, 1856, John North’s wife Ann wrote her grandmother, “We now have a post office here so that letters to us may be directed to Northfield, Rice Co. Minn.” Historic Happenings continued on next page.

Charles Legris, Treasury construction engineer, was quoted as saying, “I do not believe that another town in the Northwest of Northfield’s size has a more beautiful building.” It is “far different from the usual stereotyped design, is complete and commodious, a fine addition to what I have learned to know as a fine and beautiful little city.” An average of 35 men were engaged in the construction of the building, with work started in March of 1936 by the James Leck Company of Minneapolis, general contractors. It was built as a WPA project under the New Deal. By mid-October, the tall, white flag pole had been erected, the terrazzo flooring had been laid and the lobby surfaced with “beautiful Mankato stone with a base border of Montana gold marble.” The exterior was rock-faced limestone, in a Gothic Revival style designed to “express the collegiate atmosphere of Northfield.” Postmaster Carl Heibel.

Historic Happenings continued from previous page. 1865, was wrecked and the city’s first gasoline station (Standard Oil, erected in 1919) was moved to Division and 7th streets.

Post Office site was occupied by first gas station (center) in 1935.

The Northfield News of March 6, 1931, announced the Bridge Square location of the new post office, made possible by an appropriation of $125,000 by Congress the preceding year. The story noted that it is “not only centrally-located, but will mean an important improvement of the city. Federal buildings are frequently located on side streets so that the Northfield situation is regarded as unusual.” Six property owners were affected. Another story in the News of June 17, 1932, with the headline, “Old Landmarks on Site of New Post office are Victims of Time’s March,” said that work had begun to clear the property. The Northfield Furnace company office and shop, dating back to

Disagreement over the price asked for the site by the property owners led to condemnation proceedings and further red tape. But at long last, an open house was held on October 30, 1936. The Northfield Independent of Nov. 5 said that comments were made on the beauty, convenience and substantial construction by 1,500 people who toured the new facility. Postmaster Carl C. Heibel noted that Northfield had an unusuPhoto courtesy Northfield Post Office. ally large volume of parcel post mail. In fact, on a visit to the South St. Paul post office which served a community three times as large as Northfield, Heibel found that on that particular day the South St. Paul post office had delivered 16 parcel post packages within city limits, while Northfield was averaging 500-750 per day, not including rural routes. The South St. Paul postal officials “smiled incredulously” when Heibel told them the figures. Heibel told the newspaper that letter mail was running about a thousand pieces ahead of the previous year. Evidently some Northfielders had commented on the size of the building, because the government engineer, Legris, said federal records show that the life of a federal post office until it is outgrown is 25 years. The story in the Independent said that most people were skeptical of that average and “some are inclined to believe that the new building will serve the city for 250 years rather than 25 years only.” It is yet to be seen if the building will reach its 75th anniversary as a post office facility in October of this year.

THIS MONTH:

Prairie’s Edge Supporting the Guide since 2008!

By Felicia Crosby

“When I first started here six years ago,” Kathy explains, “I thought that this was all about trying to get animals adopted. But we also counsel people to help them keep their pets; we have resources to help them, and can help train for behavioral issues.”

There is a battle in full progress. Warriors jump from high ledges, land with a dull thud! on worthy foes, then disappear like lightning back to safe corners. Others plot from dark crevices before hurtling themselves into the fray. Bodies charge everywhere. It’s mayhem. Fuzzy, mewing mayhem, that is. Kitten playtime is in full force at Prairie’s Edge Humane Society and a half-dozen miniature fighters – none more than six weeks old – are jumping and rolling and attacking each other and this crazy pink-feathered little tower in the middle of the room with a wildeyed enthusiasm and laser-beam focus that’s uniquely kitten. Prairie’s Edge president, Kathy Jasnoch, and Sandy Vesledahl, the business operations supervisor, oversee the morning madness and explain that each group of cats gets its turn daily to play freely. “We know who gets along,” Sandy says. “We group them, and give them hour–long play rotations, several times a day. People don’t realize they’re not in cages all day, though even there we have toys and cardboard huts for stimulation. Dogs, too – we have a pool that we set up outside for the dogs when it gets warm, and plenty of toys and play!” “Most of the work we do is when we’re not open,” Kathy explains. “The staff starts at 8:00, and cleans everything, every day. Kennels, beds, dishes every animal’s space; we sanitize, give medications, walks.” And then, of course, there is all the playtime. It’s quickly apparent in this cheerful and immaculate building that Prairie’s Edge is a very animal-centric organization. But still, there are space limits. Is Prairie’s Edge a “no-kill” shelter? “The term ‘no-kill’ isn’t what it seems,” Kathy says firmly. “It really means ‘managed admission’; those places don’t take every animal. We’re an ‘open admission’ shelter which means we take every animal that comes to us.” Although, Sandy and Kathy note, no animal at Prairie’s Edge ever “runs out of time”. The recent economy has posed additional challenges for the shelter, and they’ve adjusted to the difficult situations pet owners have found themselves in. This has helped to expand the shelter’s mission statement.

July 2011

“We have a pet food shelf,” Sandy says. “There are so many people who are unemployed; places like Chuck and Don’s, Target, Walmart and Cannon Valley Vet are all a great help at donating food. Every Thursday people can come in here and take food for their pets.” For free? “We need people to sign up when they get the food – it helps us track the number of people coming in – and we ask for a donation of a dollar or two if people are able, but we will give the food.” It’s the same when someone surrenders a pet. “We do ask for a surrender fee,” Sandy says, “but we’ll take the animal regardless.” The adoption process itself is careful, thorough and always “animal-first.” The animals are thoroughly checked and screened for both health and behavior problems. They’re spayed and neutered, inoculated – this includes a rabies vaccine – and micro-chipped. Prairie’s Edge offers microchip clinics once a month. And vet clinics from Faribault Vet and Heartland to Countryside and Cannon Valley all offer a free wellness check for fourteen days after adoption. “The vets and the vet clinics are an incredible help to us,” Kathy says. Potential owners, too, get a thorough going-over. “Everybody needs to be approved,” Kathy states. “There are interviews about living situations, previous pets—” “—it’s about trying to match up owner and animal,” says Sandy. “There are a lot of costs associated with owning an animal. We really discourage impulse buying.” Staff members Trisha Thoreson and Sarah Starczewski have joined the conversation, and they have quite a bit to say when asked what makes the ideal adoptive “parent.” “Someone who’s wanted an animal for a long time, who’s been shopping around – doing their homework, learning about different breeds – someone who’s prepared to do the work that comes with owning a pet,” says Trisha.

“We have a ‘want’ log,” Sarah adds. “This is for people who are looking for certain breeds; if you don’t see the animal you’re looking for, sign up! We’ll call you as soon as we have one that matches your needs. And we can provide all sorts of information, including figuring out how much money you’ll have to invest.” “Please don’t buy on impulse,” Trisha says. “The animal just comes back to us.” “A lot of people think they’re ‘rescuing’ an animal from the humane society,” Sarah notes. “But the animals are very well cared for here.” Again, they mention the services they provide to help owners keep their pets, even through the poor economy. But what about the “problem pet”? “We can help!” Trisha says. “People don’t realize that so often there is a solution; the problems are usually fixable. We can help you train your pet.” Sarah nods in agreement. “We’re not judgmental. Please don’t feel bad about needing us. We can help you keep your pet.”

If you are ready to adopt, you’ll find an irresistible and ever-changing array of animals, each unique and perfect for someone, somewhere. Prairie’s Edge strongly believes in the maxim, “there are no such things as bad pets…” and again Sandy and Kathy stress that much of the success of a good owner/pet relationship goes into the right match between human and animal. In every room, from the “Cat Colony” to the dog kennels, cards are attached to each cage, providing detailed information about the animal within. And the excellent and informative Prairie’s Edge web site includes a list of each animal currently waiting for a home. Every step of the way, through the labyrinth of rooms which include an “acquaintance room” for one-on-one with a prospective pet to surgery and recovery rooms room, it is apparent over and over again that the animals here are treasured – by the staff, by the volunteers, and by the local veterinarians who regularly go above and beyond the course of duty. Veterinarian Dr. Charles Gumbusky has even earned the moniker “St. Charlie”. Finally, there is a quote on the wall in the Cat Colony from Dr. Suess that reads: “Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not,” which sums the Prairie’s Edge culture up quite nicely. It’s a statement that could have been written by each of the dedicated people at this extraordinary shelter.
