FREEPromotes DRIVE-IN CONCERT Bringing Community Together By Grier Lawton
If you have missed the local music scene, want to support local musicians or are looking for a fun evening with friends, make your reservations now for a free, safe, and physically distanced drive-in concert. The concert will be held on Sept. 20, from 4 to 7pm, in the parking lot of St. peter’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Featured on stage will be popular groups Terry VanDeWalker & The RCAs and the Over & Back Band, with Beverage Men, an acoustic high school band, kicking it off. Rebound Hospitality (Archer House, Fairfield Inn, Reunion) and Merchants Bank (eight area locations) are sponsoring the event with Reunion fare on a limited, but sure-to-be-delicious, menu. Dinner, which you must order ahead, will be served carside from 5-6pm. Options and pricing will be sent upon registration. Terry VanDeWalker & The RCAs (Rice County AllStars), including Aaron Anderson, Aaron Hagenson, Jeff Hutchison and Peter Lynn, is a “dose of Last Known Whereabouts, a dash of Deputies, a smidgen of Big Wu and Mr. Sticky to taste” playing a rock and jazz fusion. The Over & Back Band, made up of Faribault resident Mike Hildebrandt (fiddle) and Northfield natives Steve Jennings (drums), Craig Wasner (keyboard) and Gordon Oschwald (bass), play bluegrass, swing and jazz. The acoustic high school band, Beverage Men, includes Northfielders Kai Legvold, Robby Swenson and Dave Shelby.
Event organizer Pauline Shuster Jennings, host of the local radio show Musician Talk, says the venue “is designed to allow for 90 vehicles to be physically distanced with room for goers to set up their own chairs near their own vehicles.” So, be sure to bring a place to sit if you don’t want to stay in your car. Goers will be asked to stay with their own vehicles to ensure physical distancing. They are also partnering with Community Action Center of Northfield to accept donations of non-perishable items for the food and goods bank. Current essential needs include baby necessities, feminine hygiene products, personal hygiene and detergents. Reservations and dinner orders are required in advance. Please contact driveinlivenorthfield@gmail.com for reservations, more information and a link to donate to Community Action Center of Northfield.

Concerts in the Park: Mark Joseph • 7pm Central Park, Faribault
Mark Joseph was inspired and forever changed by witnessing the virtuosity of The King of Blues (BB King), shortly after he was gifted his first guitar in 1991, at the age of 10. The subsequent decades, 2000plus live shows, five full-length albums and multiple EPs have permanently written Mark Joseph into the sonic history he was inspired by. Yet the blues was the common thread throughout for this Minnesota-born singer/songwriter and guitarist. 2020 finds Mark Joseph showing no signs of slowing down with the recent release of his new full-length album, The Musician and the Muse. The blues are front and center as Joseph explores both his expansive songwriting skills and his explosive ability to make the guitar sing, cry or even challenge fans to question what is possible with a pick and some strings. In collaboration with the prolific and accomplished LA-based producer Steve McCormick, this record is a true snapshot in time, building upon the blues of the past, yet carving out a place for Joseph that is uniquely his own. He is also a full-time member of The Big Wu, Momentary Lapse of Floyd and various other projects. Suggested $10 free-will donation. Rice County All-Stars • 8:30-10:30pm The Contented Cow, Northfield
The Rice County All-Stars are Aaron Hagenson, Peter Lynn, Terry VanDeWalker and Aaron Anderson – that would be a dose of Last Known Whereabouts, a dash of Deputies, a smidgen of Big Wu and Mr. Sticky to taste – the All-Stars.

Local Real Estate A LOCAL Realtor KNOWS The Local Market by Arlen Malecha
D
id you know that people who hold a real estate license in Minnesota can help clients buy and sell homes throughout the entire state, and there are many Realtors that travel far and wide to get clients wherever they can? If you think about it, though, does it really makes sense to use an agent that doesn’t actually know the community where you are looking to purchase or sell a home? Can an agent really do justice in selling your home if they are located an hour or more away? Can they do the best job of finding your new home in a community they know nothing about? There are also several MLS (Multiple Listing Services) that Realtors use to market your home. Getting your home listed with the most appropriate services can have a big impact on how well your house is marketed. An agent from another area may not have access to the MLS where you are trying to buy
or sell a home, and that can be a big problem. There is an old adage that “all politics are local.” I submit that real estate, like politics, is local as well. Local agents know the community and can help you select a home that not only fits your style but your lifestyle as well. Additionally, they may know of homes that will be coming on the market soon, which gives you a larger selection to choose from. Local agents work with local mortgage lenders that we know and trust to get the job done on time, every time. A well-prepared team consisting of client, agent and lender makes your home-buying experience less stressful. There are many factors to consider when selecting the right neighborhood for you – schools, recreational opportunities, commute times, turnover rates, traffic, trains and more.

Get your name out there to the people who need real estate help
Contact us about a Realtor Directory ad: content@entertainmentguidemn.com If you are looking to build a new home, local agents know the builders in the area and will introduce you to two or three trusted builders. I’ve had friends who have wanted me to help them find a property in another community which I am not familiar with. I would much rather refer them to an agent who lives and works in that area, someone who knows the community. Could I help them? Yes. Could someone local be a better resource for them? Absolutely! If you are looking to buy or sell a home, talk to a few local agents and choose the one you feel is best suited to represent you. If you receive a marketing postcard in the mail from a Realtor, be sure to check where their home office is located. If they are from a big city 40 miles away, remember they don’t know your neighborhood like a local Realtor does. Class: Prohibition – A Grand Misadventure • 1-2pm
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
Presented by David Jones. In 1920, the U.S. entered a period during which the manufacture, sale and transportation of intoxicating liquors was banned. Rather than curing the ills of society, Prohibition is remembered for creating some of the worst possible results – thus, this period is remembered as one of the greatest misadventures ever. HISTORIC HAPPENINGS By Susan Hvistendahl Column originally published in the September 2014 Guide. More Historic Happenings available at entertainmentguidemn.com
(Defeat of) Jesse James Days With a menacing stare and a big ax, Smoke Shop proprietor Stanley “Tiny” Johnson stood beside two men locked into the “Jesse James Days Kangaroo Court Stockade.” The place was Horsecollar Park (now Bridge Square) and the caption on the photo in the Northfield News of Aug. 19, 1948, said that these two “clean-shaven characters” had been thrown in the stock “as a horrible lesson to those who still haven’t forsworn the razor for Jesse James Day.” The first “Jesse James Day” was held in Northfield on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1948, part of a two-day Jaycee Fall Festival which had started in 1946. Maggie Lee, longtime editor and writer at the Northfield News, wrote on Sept. 11, 1992, that she remembered there had been opposition to naming a day for Jesse from people who “wanted to sweep the whole Northfield Bank raid under a rug, emphasizing only the cultural advantages of our city.” But, ever the historian, she felt it was important to remember how the “gang was repulsed” and how “the Northfield experience was a turning point in frontier lawlessness.” The first button to use “defeat of” with the name Jesse James for the event came out in 1954, so “Defeat of Jesse James Days” (DJJD) had taken over very early to em-

phasize the heroism of townspeople on Sept. 7, 1876, when the James-Younger gang attempted to rob the First National Bank. That first year, only one raid reenactment was held at 2 pm in front of the Jesse James Café, now the site of the Northfield Historical Society. Members of the South St. Paul “Hook ‘Em Cow” riders joined locals, including Chuck DeMann of Dundas. DeMann portrayed Henry Wheeler, the Northfielder who had coolly dispatched outlaw Clell Miller from a window of the Dampier Hotel. (The DeMann family continues to reenact the robbery today.) A parade followed which provoked “cheer after cheer,” according to the Northfield News on Sept. 16. “Welldrilled marching units and spectacular floats swung along Division” and an American Legion band even featured the 1948 national juvenile baton champion, 11-year-old Gary Smith. Estimate of spectators ranged up to 10,000. At the end of the parade came a float carrying Northfield News editor Bill Schilling toting a gun and wearing a Buffalo Bill...

Social distancing and other public health considerations will be taken very seriously. Restrooms will be available with sanitizing equipment provided. There is a large lawn and five-acre pasture for physically distant picnicking and listening to the music. Reservations for this event are available, though not required. Space limited to 30 guests each half hour. Reservations will be honored first – after that it will be first-come, first-served. Registration and details at facebook.com. Wander the fields, see where their dinner is grown, relax and listen to the music and the farm surroundings. Please keep dogs at home. The Jugsluggers • 7-9pm
