THANK YOU! The Entertainment Guide staff would like to give a big thank you to all our readers for your patience as we navigate this new world. It was with great anxiety that we diverted our print resources and, for the first time since our inception in 2005, did not publish a printed Entertainment Guide in April or May. Those diverted resources, however, were put to great use. Tirelessly – at times with frustration, certainly with a financial hit, but always with a passion for promoting the amazing menu of arts and entertainment happenings south of the Cities – we greatly expanded our online platform. We published an archive of Susan Hvistendahl’s Historic Happenings columns going back years, we got many of the home and garden, real estate and body/ mind features that we’ve published over the years onto the website, we became the online repository for archived episodes of Some Good News Northfield, Musician Talk and a Pre-teen/Teen Radio Drama show, we published and promoted virtual events and virtual art opportunities and we were able to share news and messages from local business about how they are surviving these difficult times. Since many of our dear readers did not make the transition from print issue to online issue, we are publishing some of those online features in this print issue. Young People’s Theater Workshop It might look different, but Young People’s Theater Workshop Session I is still happening... virtually! Session I – Mon-Fri, June 8-26 – 9:15am-2:45pm Start each day with the traditional YPTW morning meeting to kick things off, then enjoy a variety of classes in theater arts each hour. End each day by gathering in small groups by age to work with the fabulous directors to create, rehearse and perform original scripts. Terrific opportunity for kid actors – starring in an exciting radio drama that will be broadcast on KYMN. Since May, several shows have been successfully rehearsed via Zoom over a two-week period, with local middle school and high school actors. The broadcast of these shows is a big hit and lots of fun. Class 3A is the third episode of the sci-fi series called the Adventures of Stardust (fantastically written by local phenom author Kosmo Esplan). Class 3B will be a whodunit based on radio hits from the Golden Age of radio. The kids will work on voices for radio acting, rehearse the show, write original commercials and an accompanying jingle, with the culmination of recording their performance the last day of the class. Olaf Orchestra and St. Olaf Philharmonia, exciting contemporary works from Norseman Band and the St. Olaf Band, beloved choral works with messages of comfort and renewal from the St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Cantorei, St. Olaf Chapel Choir, Viking Chorus, Manitou Singers, and Chamber Singers, and engaging selections from Collegium Musicum, the St. Olaf Handbell Choir, and St. Olaf Jazz I. “St. Olaf has always shown, through the extraordinary depth of its music program, that music is powerful and vital to the human condition,” says Director of College Relations for Music Organizations Jean Parish. “Our new digital concert series offers students, alumni, friends of the college, and music enthusiasts the chance to experience concerts at The sounds of the St. Olaf campus in spring are usually alive with music made by students rehearsing and performing their final concerts of the year. While the Hill was quiet this spring, the St. Olaf Music Organizations team was excited to bring the music of St. Olaf ensembles to your homes through a new digital concert series: Sounds from St. Olaf. Each week, a curated program drawn from the extensive video archive of choral and instrumental performances centered on a unique theme that presented St. Olaf music in a fresh perspective. Various ensemble conductors also made appearances to lend viewers their insights into the music selected for that week’s concert. Weekly episodes premiered on the St. Olaf YouTube channel on Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm, offering viewers an opportunity to comment and connect in real time with others. Even while audiences remained physically distant, Sounds from St. Olaf invited us to join in experiencing the power and passion of the St. Olaf ensembles together. In the first episode, which premiered Sunday, May 3, we celebrated the excellent music made by this year’s ensembles before their concert season on campus came to an early end. The concert featured well-known masterworks from the St.

Some Good News Northfield is a production of wunderkind Kosmo Esplan, who took the idea from John Krasinski’s new web series Some Good News. Krasinski created his web series to uplift people who are isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic. His series was instantly a hit and spawned countless spin-offs around the world. Northfield’s own whiz kid, Kosmo Esplan, had the idea to create a YouTube channel to feature good deeds and acts of kindness by local residents. He sent out a call for content and had a tremendous response! He has released six episodes to date. Subscribe to this pint-size prodigy’s YouTube Channel to see all episodes of Some Good News Northfield or visit entertainmentguidemn.com. Kosmo Esplan is a homeschooled sixth-grader who has always loved anything to do with theater or film, especially the Star Wars, MCU and Pixar franchises. Given the current situation, Kosmo brainstormed some ideas on how to help the community. After some trial and error, he created Some Good News Northfield, something that he hopes will lift the spirits of others during this uncertain time. Special thanks to Kosmo’s mom, dad and the many others who supported Kosmo in this journey and helped SGNN come to life!

Vintage Radio Drama Show Performed by Pre-teen and Teen Youth Actors Musician Talk with Pauline Jennings entertainmentguidemn.com/musician-talk entertainmentguidemn.com/radio-drama

Hit radio shows starring local youth actors. Pauline Shuster Jennings leads classes of teens and pre-teens in the creation of vintage and vintage-inspired radio dramas. They rehearse via Zoom, and the final performance is aired on KYMN Radio, then archived on entertainmentguidemn.com. The first two episodes were episodes of the 1930’s radio drama Challenge of the Yukon – Breakup and The Black Husky. The students and Jennings reworked the episodes to remove sexist and racist content that was considered normal at the time, but offensive today. Jennings reports that the students were very surprised by the casual racism and sexism that pervaded the show, not realizing that it was commonplace at the time. Episode three, The MISTery of Mars, was written by Jennings and Kosmo Esplan, one of the pre-teen actors. The show includes original, hilarious fake commercials and a jingle, no less – all written by the cast members.

Musician Talk is an exciting new show on KYMN Radio, airing Wednesdays at 6:30pm. It is an interview show with musicians you know, you’ve heard, or perhaps just heard about. When you tune in, you’ll hear host Pauline Shuster Jennings conduct casual, candid and lively conversations with local area musicians about how music matters in their lives, our community and beyond. Interviews include a few of their favorite songs – occasionally played live for the show. Tune in each week to hear up and comers and those that have been performing for years…and for a lot of fun. Don’t worry if you miss an on-air episode, archived episodes will appear on entertainmentguidemn.com. Pauline Jennings has been on stages as an actor and/ or singer for almost 40 years. She’s worked in theater as producer, educator, director, writer, stage manager and (primarily) an actress. She also spent 15 plus years as singer in a number of pop/country/rock bands that performed throughout the region. She is married to drummer Steve Jennings, has two grown children, Chris and Sam, and lives in Northfield.

During this difficult time of social isolation, local artist David Allen has been painting and telling stories in Facebook videos. We collected some of his delightful videos on our website and included a link to all of his facebook videos. You can also take a look at his website to see a gallery of his art. David Allen is a prolific artist who specializes in watercolor and acrylic media. He has taught art for more than thirty years to high school students and adults. His paintings and sculptures are included in many public and private collections. Allen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education at the University of Minnesota at Mankato. Currently, he resides in Northfield, Minnesota. “I love to paint small towns especially those that take a unique interest in their community,” he says. “I try to capture the feelings of timelessness and tradition that these towns offer, attempting to invoke the kind of nostalgia that we all feel for the places we grew up in. It is a responsibility and a pleasure to paint something that represents the pride, history, and sense of community that these communities display. Paintings of college campuses are also a favorite of mine because they bring back the same kind of nostalgia. “I also enjoy painting family homes, farms, and businesses. I am often commissioned to create these heirloom paintings. I am very honored that they entrust me with something so important. “I’ve always felt art should be accessible to everyone. Local Understanding Title Company Services Helps Home Buyers Choose Wisely

Buying or selling a home involves the transfer of large sums of money. It is imperative the transfer of these funds and related documents from one party to another be handled in a neutral, secure and knowledgeable manner – one of the core services a title company provides.

here are three critical service providers that prospective home buyers must be prepared to hire, as they make the exciting decision to buy a home: a real estate agent, a lender and the title company. Before selecting any of these important service providers, prospective home buyers should do their homework to find a service provider that meets their needs. When it comes to choosing a title company, buyers are sometimes unfamiliar with the services that the title company offers. A title company handles three important aspects of the real estate transaction for its customers: title insurance, escrow and closings. TITLE INSURANCE

Before a lender is willing to provide a mortgage to a home buyer, it wants to ensure that the property has a marketable title, meaning that all existing judgments, liens and mortgages can be cleared from the property before passing title to the new home buyer. The title company conducts a search of all public records and prepares a report for the lender – or for the home buyer if cash is being paid – to let them know what obligations need to be paid at the close of the transaction so that they emerge with clear title to the property. When all those obligations are met at closing, the title company issues a title insurance policy to the lender and to the home buyer. This title insurance policy offers protection against claims resulting from various defects, as set out in the policy, that may exist in the title, effective on the issue date of the policy. An example of a defect would be a prior claim

LISTENING TO By Julie Buchwald Haley I grew up listening to a wide range of music from classical to country, to folk and jazz, to bluegrass and contemporary. My parents are both pretty musical, and played an extensive music collection at home on Sundays. We had family sing-alongs of mostly Hootenanny, and I can carry a tune outside of a bucket – but just barely. So, for me, finding Northfield’s music scene during COVID-19 has been both a surprise and a comfort. I’ve known about the music scene in Northfield since moving back to the area several years ago, but I didn’t experience it much. I’m not much of a bar-goer, and visit the patios only a few times a year, but I have found myself at my Bluetooth speakers frequently in the last few months watching online concerts. It started with a virtual concert by The Border Hookups where they included You Are My Sunshine, an all-time favorite song of mine and one my mom sang to me growing up, especially when I wasn’t feeling well. It raised my spirits that dreary day in March and has done so many times since. They play an eclectic range of country, rock and folk music, most of which I can sing along to. Seeing The Border Hookups in Visit Northfield’s Quarantine Concert Series led me to Randall Ferguson, a local (retired) music teacher who skillfully plays historic string instruments from early guitars to ukulele, banjo and mandolin. He also lays down some pretty cool knowledge between songs about the instruments, compositions and composers. His instruments are fascinating and his music easily transports

I also found live concerts by Ray Coudret and Curt Johnson, on guitar and keyboard, covering classic rock and great music by some artists you may not have heard of. Mark Ross with both his wife Vanessa and his band The Three-Nineteen, cover rock, alternative country and Americana. Johnson

Some of my favorite virtual shows are by kids. Kyra singing Rise Up (youtube.com/watch?v=Ozy5ZA1vvtc) and encouraging us to hang in there and get through this. She has an amazing, strong voice and an impressive vocal range. And though it isn’t music, SGNN needs to be included in my great finds. Kosmo Esplan, a local actor, has a weekly show, Some Good News Northfield, a spinoff of SGN with actor John Krazinski, “exploring good deeds people in/around Northfield have been performing.” What a wonderful way to keep our spirits up, encourage kindness, and highlight positivity in these challenging times. His good news is entertaining and absolutely heartening. I encourage you to spend some of your daily screen time checking out Northfield’s amazing online entertainment scene. Visit Northfield has a virtual concert series, YouTube has a lot of these artists and many of them are featured on entertainmentguidemn.com. It’s a fun way to #staysafe and learn about our talented locals.

David Allen – Northfield Nostalgia and More I have two David Allen paintings in my two-bedroom condo. Both are winter scenes showing Northfield’s Bridge Square from different angles. In one, the iconic red 1918 popcorn wagon can be seen braving the elements near the Scriver Building. Northfielders know the popcorn wagon is put away after Defeat of Jesse James Days in September until our long winter finally releases its grip sometime in May. What’s up with that? When I visited Northfield artist David Allen at his studio behind his house on Woodley Street East, he gave me the answer: artistic license. He wanted to include “a splash of red color in the winter,” so he put in this iconic feature of Bridge Square. In truth, since Allen is known for painting places imbued with history and nostalgia, he does not take a lot of liberties with such scenes. Mostly, he told me, he will just put in shadows or light reflections and may move a tree or add a lamp post or a flag pole as it suits his artistic vision. Allen is not an en plein air painter, finding that too time-consuming. He prefers to work from photographs and memory. Memories! That is Allen’s stock in trade, providing art that brings back memories of familiar places and events of Northfield, his home since 1976. Have you ever fished on Bridge Square? Shopped during a snowy Winter Walk in De-

cember? Paused to admire window displays at Quality Bakery or at the Northfield Historical Society museum? Attended one of Northfield’s schools or belonged to one of its churches? Slid down Old Main hill at St. Olaf or at Bell Field at Carleton as a child or with your own children? Do you remember the Ideal Café and Jacobsen’s store, no longer on Division Street? Or St. Olaf’s 1900 dormitory Ytterboe Hall? Allen has captured these memories, among many others, including scenes from Farmington and other nearby communities. But his major focus has been on Northfield, St. Olaf and Carleton colleges. Allen told me he has always been interested in history and is pleased, as an artist, to be able to help preserve local history. He said, “I could paint another 50 years in this town and probably never run out of subject matter. I like to paint things that bring nostalgia to people.” His favorite subject is Bridge Square, in all seasons, “the center of the community,” where people tend to gather. Allen said, “Anyone who ever comes to this town is almost mesmerized by Bridge Square, they just love it,” and he always takes his visitors there, just to “wander around.” Another favorite topic is train depots, and he has painted ones from Northfield, Montgomery, Farmington, Faribault, New Prague, New Ulm, Rosemount, Kenyon, Rochester, Lakeville, Waseca and Hudson, Wisconsin. His ancestors came from Ireland, arriving in Minnesota by train, and “If it wasn’t for the railroad, it would have been a lot tougher to settle out here.” Allen started painting depots in about 1970 and he said that many depots are disappearing. His wife, Pat, helped the effort to save Northfield’s 1888 depot.

Allen, who grew up in Mankato, was the second of 14 children. His father Richard Allen, from Mineota, had gone to art school at what is now known as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. After serving in the Pacific with the army during World War II, Richard Allen found work painting murals on the sides of houses and stores. David Allen told me you

can still see some of the signs his father painted in southern Minnesota and eastern South Dakota, signs such as “Five cents. Drink Coke” for the Coca Cola Company. Allen inherited his interest in art from his father. Allen said, “We just always took art for granted. He would let us play with art, paint, do whatever we wanted, so it was just part of the routine…It was the way you grew up.” But with 14 kids and Allen’s grandmother and aunt also living with them, there wasn’t much space for a studio in their house in Mankato, just part of a front porch cordoned off. Richard Allen did commissioned paintings in oil and also became a liturgical art decorator. There was “a lot of scaffolding work, painting pictures of saints and angels, doing filigree work,” with help from David and his older brother, Dick. Among David’s siblings, brother Dick became a novelist and two of his sisters, Mary and Katie, were professional singers. Only David Allen became a visual artist.

Skinner Chapel (2000) – David Allen: “The chapel is the first thing you see as you approach Carleton College. It presents a warm and welcoming sight.”

David Allen graduated from Loyola High School in Mankato in 1961, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1961 to 1964. He then worked for a couple years in a steel mill in Detroit until “I decided that wasn’t my calling,” and he returned to Mankato. There he got a B.S. degree in art and special education in 1970 from Mankato State University and married his high school sweetheart, Pat Reedy, in 1967. After college, Allen started teaching special education and then art at Rosemount High School and also established a work program for at-risk kids. As Allen explained it, “Kids would have to take a class on how to be able to work, how to get jobs, how to keep jobs,” learning life skills. The students would be released from school to work and “Then we as teachers would monitor their work so that they would be successful.” Allen said it was a very rewarding program, watching kids blossom and “get a sense of who they are” as they then went on to careers. Allen was commuting to his work in Rosemount from St. Paul, but when their son, Sean, reached school age, the Allens, with two younger daughters, decided they wanted to move to a better environment and a smaller community. Allen had been participating in the Northfield Arts Guild Arts Festival during Defeat of Jesse James Days since 1970 and when they found their 1899 home on Woodley Avenue East, they became Northfield residents in 1976. Allen said that he noticed “right off the bat” that “everybody was friendly and welcoming, and it’s just a beautiful place” which has been kept that way, with a “taste of the old homestead, the old prairie towns that I really liked and still do.” In 1986, Allen and four other teachers started a new school under district guidelines, the Rosemount Alternative Learning Center, with Allen as the art teacher. It was “for kids that were dropouts, or having trouble, or just didn’t want to be in school in Rosemount,” Allen said. This was his work for 26 years. Besides teaching art, he taught shop, English and some auto mechanics, “whatever they wanted me to teach, I would teach it. And it was a blast, I enjoyed it.” In total, he taught 43 years in Rosemount and retired in 2013.

Could Allen have made a living just as an artist? He replied, with another laugh, “If I wasn’t teaching, I’d be a lot skinnier than I am now.” But he had a family to support, and he loved teaching. For several Septembers since retirement he has been artist-in-residence at the Rosemount Middle School, doing such things as demonstrating watercolor and acrylic techniques and helping with clay classes. Allen said, “I like kids, so it’s perfect.” As a visiting artist, “I don’t have to discipline them anymore.”

Of course, retirement means more time for his art, but Allen told me that over the years, “I would try to every day do something with art, an hour, two hours.” Allen’s father always told him, “Inspiration comes from work, work does not come from inspiration,” and he adheres to that. A llen said, “So the more you work, the more inspired you become, so that’s why I always emphasized you have to keep working.” Artists feel compelled to work anyway: “It’s just part of you, you have to

do it.” And Allen feels lucky that, as an artist, he still has this artistic calling to keep him busy. When the Allens first moved to Northfield, their house came with a chicken coop in the back that he tried to retrofit for a studio. Even after adding a woodstove, “I’d come out in the morning and all my paints would be frozen.” So he painted in a corner of the family room for many years, then in a studio addition built onto the house. Needing more room, in 2012 he replaced the coop with a big garage which serves a variety of purposes, besides sheltering cars. (“My kids call it the Garage-Majal,” Allen said.) There is a greenhouse, with ten-foottall windows, with Allen’s studio on the second floor. Near the cars is a space for welding.

son when he was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay and noticed elderly women and men feeding birds in the village square. “That was their entertainment, all day long,” a scene Allen saw repeated in other countries such as Italy. Allen liked the “communication between human beings and animals,” and made sculptures of people feeding pigeons, ducks, chickens

Welding? Yes. Though he mostly does metal sculptures in the spring and summer, and paints acrylics and watercolors during the winter, Allen can now weld year round. This aspect of Allen’s art is not as well-known as his painting, but he has actually worked with welding since starting in a college shop. It was not a class; he said, “I kind of taught myself.” And his work was abstract, which was “all the rage in the ’60s.” Allen’s welding found a focal point in the mid-1970s. Allen’s interest had been piqued in college when he had read Cervantes’ immortal tale about Don Quixote fighting those windmills which he had mistaken for giants, along with his sidekick Sancho Panza. Allen considers Quixote to be “just a timeless figure of people having their dreams and visions and following them – crazy as he was, he followed them.” Allen began painting this Quixote theme in 1970, with welding taking over by the mid-1970s. He has produced Quixotic works ranging from eight inches tall to seven feet tall. Allen estimates each takes about eight to ten hours to complete.

In 2014 Allen added a surrealistic painting of Don Quixote to his oeuvre. Allen said this has come out of his love of doodling shapes, which has in turn led to a series of boldly colorful paintings. Allen’s surrealistic works are inspired by the mustachioed Spanish artist Salvador Dalí, whose images of melting pocket watches in The Persistence of Memory (1931) are widely recognized. Whenever Allen is in Florida, he makes a stop at the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg which has the largest collection of Dalí’s work outside of Spain. Allen said that Dalí is “my absolute hero,” another “crazy guy” like Quixote, but “just so talented.” Another sculptural theme was born when David and Pat Allen visited their

and seagulls, sometimes softening the iron of the work by incorporating ceramic creatures. He has also made a bird lady of shiny mesh which originally was to be covered by clay but which he decided gave a “nice airy feeling.” So now he will start doing other sculptures in this way. Allen does commissioned paintings of homes, businesses, farms and other locales which are often given as Christmas and birthday presents. If it is to be a surprise, Allen will make stealthy forays to take pictures or use pictures provided. Such works become family heirlooms. He has started to market personalized paintings of the Grand Event Center, with “your name here” on the marquee. (He first did this for his own daughters after their wedding receptions were held at the

Grand.) Allen also sells greeting cards and is currently selling 25 different scenes from Northfield, Carleton and St. Olaf colleges, New Prague and Montgomery. Allen told me, “I like painting the pictures, but I like people to have them,” so he makes sure his work is affordable.
