Anthony Huber and Rachel Egeberg. A visually rich painting show. Colors and textures vary from delicate organic blends to rough, bright, industrial constructions. These paintings are layered with physical media and conceptual meaning. The Imagery is both referential and abstract. The layers of image and paint used by the artists in their distinctive ways create a reflective depth. As the title implies, the canvases are “built up” and act as a conceptual springboard to “build on.” “The Space Between” – Oct. 18-Nov. 16. Photographs by Mat Brutger and sculpture by Kristi Kuder. Kuder’s wire sculptures delicately encompass space in forms tangible and diaphanous, while Brutger’s photographs ask the viewer for the ideas that stretch in the created spaces. Both artists employ light and image to construct intriguing depth. The works entice the audience to look deeper into the confines and contemplate the movement of shadows and emotions that course through the pieces. Opening Reception: Oct. 18, 7-9pm. Members’ Room:

The Treasure of Shiver River

Baltimore Waltz

Oct. 3-6, 7:30pm and Oct. 5-6, 2pm Haugen Theater, St. Olaf, Northfield Written in 1989 one year after her brother died of AIDS, Paula Vogel’s Baltimore Waltz imagines the trip she never took with her brother to Europe. Ribald and absurd, the surreal journey of Anna and her brother Carl through Europe unfolds in a hospital lounge as Anna faces the death of her brother. At a time when AIDS was a death sentence and government response to the growing epidemic criminally slow, Vogel’s funny and moving play reveals both the ludicrous ineptitude and profound loss that she and many others experienced during the AIDS crisis of the ’80s. Fesler-Lampert Performing Arts Series: The Secret Garden

Tightly wound, ingenious and even humorous at times, the layers of intrigue in this mystery are deep and exhilarating. From the time Elaine Wheeler thinks she sees a dead body in the window across the way from her Manhattan townhouse, the audience is brought along on a thrilling and suspenseful journey. Directed by Rachel Haider.

Oct. 25-27, Nov. 1-3; Fr-Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault The story takes place in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, in a little bar called “The Bunyan,” owned by Clara and Gunner Johnson. Clara is eight-and-a-half months pregnant with their first child and today she’s looking forward to her baby shower, getting lots of presents and taking a break from her raging hormones. Suddenly a freak snowstorm, a “tsnownami,” hits Bunyan Bay and they find themselves snowed in. All roads are closed. No one can get in or leave. Gunner’s worst nightmare comes true when Clara goes into labor and he realizes he’s going to have to deliver the baby in the bar. Paid Advertisement

Ice cream or gelato? Hmmm..... Personally I prefer gelato - it’s smoother in texture and the flavors are rich and wonderful. It’s also lighter in fat and calories. There is a cool, fairly new, gelato spot that I highly recommend trying the next time you are up in St. Paul – “Cow Bella” on Grand Avenue. I had the delightfully spicy and refreshing “Wasabi” flavor the last time I was there. Bellissimo! I love the very clever play on words in the shop title. And I enjoy the story behind the store - read it on their website. www.cowbellagelato.com “It's so sublime, it's a wonder it's not illegal.” – Voltaire, on gelato

Harvesting the Visual Arts

The Space Between – Brutger

There’s an autumn tradition that’s grown alongside miles of organic produce and flowers in Minnesota, and it’s as eagerly awaited as the rocket red maple leaf. Visual arts studios of all kinds open their doors this time of year, or band together in cornucopias of artistic abundance in fairs throughout the region. Take a weekend – or take a weekend day each week this month – and get to know the art that’s being produced all around

It’s billed as coming “44 Years After Woodstock” and it features finger-snapping, get-out-on-the-floor dance music by The 8th Street Band, The Devneys and Shee-Rah. Could it be Domstock? Indeed! Join the good folks of St. Dominic School in Northfield Oct. 5 as they throw a first-ever benefit concert and all-around fun night and help raise money for in-house student counseling services. Doors open at 6:30 and the music kicks in at 7; food and beverages will be available. For more information, call 507/6458136. This is a 21 and older event.

Harvest Fest at Thorn Crest Farm

If your idea of the perfect autumn weekend doesn’t include an afternoon picking pumpkins, strolling golden fields, taking farm tours and enjoying the freshest produce Midwestern gardens can grow, well – I’m sure there’s something else in the Guide that will interest you. But for the rest of us, fall doesn’t get much better than this, and Thorn Crest Farm in Dundas satisfies our cravings and opens its doors to us farmer-wannabes with their Fall Harvest Festival that starts Oct. 4 and runs through Oct. 27, Friday-Sunday weekly. Join them, too, for the Candlelite Evening Oct. 11, and enjoy live music, hayrides and a bonfire. For more information, call 507/6454182 or go to thorncrestfarm.com. Save some room for the apples.

Don’t Hug Me, I’m Pregnant

Oh, provocative title, that. And with a story line that every parent (and parentto-be) can relate to, it’s a guaranteed good time for everyone whose greatest fears may or may not include giving birth in a Northern Minnesota bar. Presented at the Paradise Theater in Faribault and performed by the impeccable Merlin Players, this full-length musical comedy follows first-time parents Clara and Gunner and involves a much-anticipated baby shower, a “tsnownami,” and a baby that won’t listen to “wait.” The show runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2; for tickets and information, go to paradisecenterforthearts.org or call 507/332-7372.

Under the Covers with Dylan When is a tribute band more than just a tribute band? If that band is Justin Ploof and the Throwbacks and the concert they present combines vintage footage, documentary narration and a live and faithful homage to its honoree, it’s called a “rockumentary” and it becomes an event. And on Oct. 19 at the Zumbrota State Theater (next to Crossings in Zumbrota), the stage comes alive with Dylan, Under the Covers – a tribute to one of Minnesota’s most iconic musical sons. The band is hot, the images spectacular and the vibe is authentic. The show starts at 7:30; for tickets and more information go to crossingsatcarnegie.com or call 507/732-7616.

Cemetery Stories

On Oct. 19, the Northfield Historical Society presents its much-loved annual Cemetery Stories. This living history event features long-gone locals who speak very much from – and literally next to – their final resting places, and its combination of theater, history and twilight nature walk draws a large and loyal crowd. This year, the NHS has added local Civil War veterans to this group. More than 150 years have passed since the first battle of a war that remains America’s bloodiest, and there was not a corner of this country that stayed uninvolved. Though not all the real-life veterans featured here were interred in Northfield, each one called it home. The tours begin at 3:40; for reservations, call 507/645-9268 or visit northfieldhistory.org. And when downtown, take a few moments to visit the NHS exhibit, If War Comes, I’m Going! and learn more about the often very young men who heard the call – and served.

HAPPENINGS Saturday, October 5, continued Davina & the Vagabonds • 7pm

The Tannahill Weavers • 7:30pm

Falconer Vineyards, Red Wing Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national (and Europe) blues scene with influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. The band’s latest recording, 2011’s Black Cloud, was named one of the 10 best releases of the year by the Star Tribune. So much more than just a blues act, the shows Grinkie Girl Photography/ are filled with New Orleans charm, MemChristie Williams phis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Though compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, Sowers is a true original. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section.

Crossings at Carnegie, Zumbrota The Tannahill Weavers play music pulled straight from traditional Scottish reels and jigs, but they remake the songs, bringing them into the 21st Century with driving guitar playing and the energy of modern rock. Rock Out for Cancer Featuring Rock Sirenz • 7:30pm

After wandering through engineering, sociology, anthropology, motherhood and technical writing, I finally found my true calling in the mid-1990s, when I first got my hands in real clay. I loved the idea that you could start with earth and water, air and fire, and end up with dishes. Instruction: Northern Clay Center Apprenticeship: with Richard Bresnahan, St. John’s University Pottery. Moved to the Northfield area in 2004, building a house six miles south of town, so that she could build a wood-fired kiln (third version almost complete).

I make high-fired stoneware for its strength and durability, and glaze with a palette of colors that do not depend on toxic compounds. I make things for every-day use that I hope will delight the user whenever they are picked up. Finding Barbara: Zaveruha.com

My artwork develops from doing. Inspiration may rise from a location, a sheet of good rag paper, a block of Styrofoam, a stack of books or more. I begin by experimenting with materials until ideas and techniques come together. Early influence: Traveling as a young boy with his grandparents to the West and Southwest’s national parks and monuments First Life: Professional musician, with an interest in photography, plants, flowers and grand vistas. Second Life: Computer industry, marriage, family, coupled with a desire to see and travel through wilder areas of this continent, led to dabbling with a 35mm film camera to document his travels. This led to attempts at artistic expressions that were, at best and very rarely, acceptable, but at worst, simply frustrating. Third Life: Health issues, a refocus and ultimately a trip to Alaska along the Inside Passage, then north to Denali National Park. An interest in traveling and photography as a way to express joy and wonder at the scenes that were presented was rekindled.

Ansel Adams had been and still is an inspiration, and the internet opened other photographers’ visions to me, most notably Alain Briot and Guy Tal. That is my challenge and my life today. I have been studying and working to improve and that has rejuvenated me and sparked my drive to try to present the beauty that is all around us in such a way that it helps others see and appreciate it.

Started making pots with a few friends in about 1976, but then stopped a couple years later. After dragging his clunky kit-built kick wheel and several buckets of clay around for about 25 years, he renewed his pottery interest at the Northfield Arts Guild by taking a class from Maia Homstad. In the last decade or so, he has gradually created a studio in his basement, acquiring a kiln and a slab roller and building a wedging table and a spray booth. The old kick wheel still works. Jim likes to make all kinds of pots, but mostly functional ware like bowls and mugs and plates and vases. He takes commissions if the person commissioning the work isn’t in a big hurry. On a blank sheet of paper, I choose a corner to make the first mark, a line that eventually morphs into a series of nonobjective structures. The subject matter reflects a strategy of mark making in which the main influence on the outcome of the content is the process of building a composition – outlining, filling in blank spaces, adding lines and consciously leaving gaps. I have an inventory of images that are repeated over and over - it is both comfortable and stimulating at the same time. In some cases, manipulation of the paper beforehand enables these marks to take on a different form. Struggling to infuse my work with this notion of spontaneity using lines, composition and arrangement, I find these acts of impulsiveness to be most rewarding. Chainsaw Artist Curtis Ingvoldstad: Carving out a Career

two friends influence and learn from each other’s work, despite their different backgrounds and techniques. Ingvoldstad explained that “I paint my carvings and he used to just finish his natural with just stain.” Hayashi then was inspired by Ingvoldstad and added painting to his carvings. When they go into competitions, “I know if I want to do well I have to carve everything really clean and really well because I know Hayashi is going to carve his piece that way. And Hayashi knows he’s going to have to finish his piece really well because I am going to finish mine really well.” Despite the adrenalin flowing, it was a friendly rivalry at the U.S. Open, with a “great group of people, a real camaraderie” with everyone sharing tools and helping each other.

Ingvoldstad described the U.S. Open as a “high level international carving competition.” He had brought a variety of carving tools to his third U.S. Open, including seven different saws. Ingvoldstad sticks to the more expensive pro level carving bars for his chainsaws, which have narrower tips for carving, and goes with professional level saws for power heads. He said, “The big thing for carving is weight to power,” using the “smallest saw with the most power,” since “you are going to be holding that thing for hours and hours.” The field included artists from the U.S., Japan, Austria, Germany and Australia who had 26 hours in the space of three and a half days to complete their work. Ingvoldstad placed second to Takao Hayashi of Japan, who also placed first last year. Ingvoldstad said he has been “able to develop a really cool friendship” with Hayashi, whose style he characterized as “refined” and “amazing.” The

routine of it.” Currently, Ingvoldstad feels that he just tries to “relax and have fun” and to do “my best carving for the crowd,” showing his skill and what he brings to this art form to the audience and other carvers, while “not really trying to compete with anybody but myself.” Ingvoldstad grew up in White Bear Lake loving math and science but finding himself drawing or “always making three-dimensional objects.” Despite encouragement from art teachers, “I just shut the door,” thinking “there’s just no money in that.” After graduating from high school in 1988, he went to Iowa State as a pre-engineering student, following the path of his father and brother. But he transferred to the University of Minnesota for his junior year, not quite sure of what he really wanted to do in life. He had an interest assessment that showed “librarian, architect or artist” and, taking into account his math proclivities, took a year of architecture courses, which included his first studio arts class. He ended up with a B.A. in video and performance art. Ingvoldstad credits performance art teacher Susan Lucey with showing the class how to “bring ourselves out” in creative communication with the audience through the “ritual of art.” When I asked him what carries over from that to his chainsaw performances, Ingvoldstad said, “I want to make it interesting to the people who are watching so I tend to carve really fast for performances. I want to shoot wood chips around, I want to kick pieces of wood around.” The struggle and the “intensity and energy” inherent in his work is shown, even though it may look effortless. He moves the carving around, so the audience doesn’t think the wood is “some pristine thing.” And he will stop and engage those watching in order to “make the human connection.” After college, Ingvoldstad went on to do “pretty much anything in the video industry.” When he got laid off in 2007, he finally said to his wife Desiree, “Guess what? I can’t run away from it anymore.”

He wanted to pursue art “and see if it will take care of us.” He had been a part-time carving artist from 1999 on, inspired by his father Carsten whose hobby was carving miniature carousel horses. The son soon gravitated toward using power tools and began selling his art at craft shows. Ingvoldstad said he has always liked to be able to work fast and “get things done quickly and efficiently.” He added, “My brain gets really engaged in that.” Ingvoldstad had been encouraged to think beyond part-time after completing a major project brought to him in 2005 by Jack Becker of Forecast Public Artworks in St. Paul. Becker asked him to do a bust of Cesar Chavez, the Mexican-American farm worker and civil rights activist in California who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later renamed the United Farm Workers union, UFW). Ingvoldstad threw himself into research of his subject, interviewing people who had known Chavez when he spoke in Minnesota. (Ingvoldstad talked to a bodyguard who had accompanied Chavez in 1986 to a speech at Carleton College on reducing agricultural pesticide use.) Ingvoldstad came up with the idea of turning a whole log into a three-dimensional mural with Chavez, an eagle perched above him and the UFW Prayer on the back. The completed work still stands on Cesar Chavez St. in West St. Paul, La Placita, adjoining El Burrito Mercado. Ingvoldstad had learned that hunger strikes for worker rights had weakened Chavez and may have shortened his life. If Chavez was a martyr who died for his beliefs, Ingvoldstad has a story which he said still gives him chills when he thinks about it. When he was sawing to create an open hand of Chavez, he encountered a nail. “Nails are not what I want to find with my chainsaw, as it will dull my blade,” Ingvoldstad said. “But it hit me just as I was going to get my nail puller that with all the suffering Chavez went through, it was perfect where it was. So I left the nail in his palm.” One of his first projects as a full-time chainsaw artist brought Ingvoldstad from his St. Paul home to Northfield in August of 2008. He had been engaged to create a life-size chainsaw rendering of

Jesse James during what was called ArtSwirl. Crowds gathered in Bridge Square to watch the outlaw, modeled on current James-Younger gang leader Chip DeMann, emerge from the hunk of wood. At one point Jesse (DeMann) rode into town to critique the artist’s technique. Ingvoldstad remembers how receptive everyone (including the outlaw himself) was to the project and he said he loves how “wide open” and supportive Northfield is to the arts. (Jesse, by the way, was auctioned off for the Northfield Historical Society that November and was bought by Jeff Johnson, who installed it at Northfield’s KYMN radio station.) Many projects followed. Here are just a few. When a tree planted around 1900 in the front yard of the former William Hamm house in St. Paul was succumbing in the summer of 2008 to the deadly Dutch elm disease, Ingvoldstad was engaged by Hamm’s Beer history preservationists Karin and Richard DuPaul to saw away to release the Hamm’s Bear In 2009 Ingvoldstad sculpted this they envisioned hiding within 7-foot gnome from a maple tree in the stump. Ingvoldstad said the West St. Paul. bear can be seen on the edge of Swede Hollow Park on brewery bus tours. In October of 2008, a Navy submarine veteran in Richfield who loved eagles hired him

to carve a six-foot eagle on a Liberty Bell on a giant elm trunk. In 2009, Ingvoldstad helped a seven-foot gnome emerge from a maple tree in West St. Paul. In August of 2011, in the parking lot of Winona’s oldest restaurant, Ingvoldstad in one day converted the tall stump of another dying elm tree into a gigantic root beer barrel to advertise the famous root beer of Lakeview Drive-In. Owner Tim Glowczewksi was quoted as saying, “He worked like an animal!” Ingvoldstad said a perk was “all the root beer I could drink, of course.” By the end, he was exhausted, but it was “a lot of fun to do.” He added, “The hardest things sometimes to carve are the simplest shapes to get them to look right.” Ingvoldstad spent a week in Ames, Iowa, in April of 2012 carving a totem of six Civil War figures out of the trunk of a sugar maple at the home of In 2011, a dying elm became a giant Civil War enthusiast Jerry Litzel: root beer barrel for Winona’s oldest Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. restaurant, the Lakeview Drive-In, Grant, George A. Left: Ingvoldstad created this totem of six Civil War figures for a customer in Ames, Iowa, in April of 2012. Right: Children flocked to see Ingvoldstad’s 20-foot tall art work made from a 100-year-old cottonwood in the “Story Time Garden” for the Ordway Center in St. Paul in June of 2012. The face honored a beloved forestry worker who had died in 2009.

for me,” giving him a chance to stretch his abilities to do faces. After this, he traveled to Roscoe, Montana, to carve a Norwegian troll, having a “fun time with mountain men and ranchers.” On June 2-3, 2012, came a culmination of a challenging commission brought to him again by Jack Becker: to create public art out of a tree trunk for the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival of the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul. Ingvoldstad’s work was put into a Story Time Garden in Hamm’s Plaza and, appropriately, he has quite a story to tell about how “everything just kind of came together.” What a tree trunk it was! Ingvoldstad said the forestry department had a 100-year-old gigantic cottonwood with a huge root ball on it which had gotten hung up under a city dock and had been extracted from the Mississippi River by crane. The idea for the art was to turn the trunk upside down, so the roots became flowering branches. Ingvoldstad was apprehensive, at first, about how it would balance but in a “crazy feat of engineering,” the forestry department chained and roped it to other trees and created a base around it so he could work on it.

The sculpture has a collage of painted animals on it, with a “storyteller” face dominating the carving. Ingvoldstad modeled the face on a picture of a forestry worker named Joe “Gonzo” Misiewicz, who had died at 49 of cancer in 2009. His colleagues wanted to honor this man who loved trees and had a big mustache, big eyebrows, big eyes and big, white front teeth. Ingvoldstad was touched when he realized that Gonzo had helped him during the Cesar Chavez project in 2008 and now was being memorialized in this fashion. After the event, the 20-foot tall, 5,850-pound tree was mounted on a concrete slab in front of the forestry offices at 1120 N. Hamline Ave.

eagle for them and then delighted the students by creating Ollie the Otter, the mascot of their school. The teacher said, “Now all of the students want to hug or pet our otter... Ollie is a big deal at our school.” Several youngsters announced intentions of becoming chainsaw artists. Ingvoldstad is pleased to be able to illustrate the creative process that is involved in art, demonstrating how art does not just “show up.”

Ingvoldstad reflected on what his art means to people. He carves many eagles and “just watching the eagle fly, I know why that’s inspiring.” People want to relive that kind of inspirational feeling “because for them, it betters their life.” Ingvoldstad asks many questions in his commission work so that no matter This past winter, Ingvoldstad carved how simple the subject matter, the custhe eagles on top of the trophies given tomer has “the thing that they are lookout for the Red Bull Crashed Ice World ing for in the end.” Perhaps they want Championship in St. Paul. His property is said he designed the eagles so they look the former Hukee Dairy and includes some of the Nerstrand to save a tree or just enjoy watching the creative process. Ingvoldstad said, like they have a “skater movement” going Big Woods. down a course. He also carved the Minnesota Wild hockey logo in “What I do, it’s a service like anything else” and “no less valuable a three-hour show for a conference at Xcel Energy Center. chainsaw more effectively than a knife, since a saw speeds up the process so much. And once he has assimilated the research and planned things out in his head, it goes faster and better “because my brain is so clear on what it’s supposed to look like that it’s just a matter of waiting for the saws to cut.”

The artist also enjoys visiting schools. When he visited Elk River’s Twin Lakes Elementary School in the fall of 2011, he carved a bald

Ingvoldstad was pleased to show me around his property, which at one time had been the Hukee Dairy. He said that when he first walked into the 30-foot tall, spacious barn, “my heart just kind of went BOOOM, this is your studio.” His wife Desiree felt at home in this area because she had grown up in Northfield where her father Fred Fintel owned the Ideal Café at 317 Division St. Ingvoldstad also had a connection because a railroad bed runs through their land from a railway which once carried his grandfather Carsten Ingvoldstad (a 1926 St. Olaf graduate from Iowa) to and from college. A part of their property is in the Nerstrand Big Woods, legendary for having over 200 varieties of wildflowers (including the endangered dwarf trout lily). And, appropriately, the Big Woods has been noted for sugar maple, basswood, oak, hickory, aspen, elm, ash and ironwood trees. Who knows what objects lurk within such trees, just waiting for a talented chainsaw artist to release them?
