The Odyssey

Aug. 2-4, 9-11, F/Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater

Homer’s classic and brilliant tale adapted by renowned playwright Mary Zimmerman and directed by Marc Robinson. Zimmerman’s irreverent and witty adaptation of Homer’s myth begins with a modern young woman reading Robert Fitzgerald’s famous 1961 translation of The Odyssey. A muse appears and the young woman becomes the goddess Athena – a tireless advocate for Odysseus in his struggle to get home. Along the way he encounters iconic and fascinating characters such as Circe, the Cyclops, Poseidon, Calypso, the Sirens and more. The Odyssey cast includes Jonathan Larson as Odysseus, Elin Odegaard as Athena and Aaron Walker as Telemachus. They are supported by an ensemble cast including Frank Blomgren, Dick Brown, Birch Carlson, Kevin Chapman, Esmé Etter, Elly Garrity, Alexander Gaya, Marie Gery, Ben Jorenby, Sasha Kazharskaya, Libby Klein, Dean Lamp, Steve Lawler, Courtney Mastin and Larry Tolle. The Nerd

Madagascar: A Musical Adventure Jr.

Presented by Expressions Community Theater. Willum Cubbert, has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. Willum wrote a letter to Rick saying, “As long as I’m alive, you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you,” only for Rick to show up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his 34th birthday party. His delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” – a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence – a dire development which, happily, is staved off by a surprising twist. Tickets: $13, available at 952/985-4640 or lakevilleareaartscenter.com.

Presented by Marquee Children’s Theatre. Based on the DreamWorks animated movie. Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria are living the “good life” at the Central Park Zoo, but Marty wants to be “free” and heads out to find greener pastures in the “wide open spaces of Connecticut.” They are caught before they can catch a train and instead end up on the island of Madagascar after those crazy penguins – Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private – take over driving the boat heading to Kenya. From there our foursome meets the lemurs of Madagascar and their self-proclaimed ruler, King Julien the 13th. Julien wants to keep the “New York Giants” around to scare away their dreaded enemy, the Foosa, only to find out that Alex the lion might be worse than the Foosa. Tickets: $8 adults, $4 students, $20 Family Pass (two adults, two students), available at the box office, 507-332-7372 or paradisecenterforthearts.org/purchase-tickets/.

When discussing the great history of wine, the Levant (Middle East) is typically a footnote or not mentioned at all. Lebanon, just north of Israel and on the Mediterranean, was known as the “Breadbasket of the Roman Empire” and home to some of the oldest wine growing known to mankind. Largely a Francophile country now, the French influence mingles with the ancient region to produce some truly captivating wines. Free and open to anyone over 21.

Art and performances of all kinds including poetry readings, live music, community coloring, dance, photography, acrylic painting, cinematography, Haidong Gumdo, visual art, belly dancing, sidewalk poetry, improv, MN Art Truck and more. Free. More at downtownnorthfield.org.

Minneapolis-based acoustic folk, blues and country musician Chris Holm is a fingerstyle guitar picker and harmonica player,. He channels the high-spirited liveliness of Charley Patton, thumping on his suitcase drum, attacking his guitar strings with abandon and shouting along in a gravelly howl, only to later to channel the lonesome sounds of a weeping slide guitar and a blues yodel. Despite his Northern Minnesota roots, Holm has formed an intimate connection with the music of the American South. Raised on the music of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Flatt & Scruggs, The Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival, he eventually dug into the music that inspired those great artists and discovered a deep appreciation for country blues and hillbilly country music.

HAPPENINGS

Friday, August 2, continued The Cavern Lads • 8-11pm Reunion Stage, Northfield

Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2019

Schmoo Period, Blue Period... As Paisley Paws creates yet another Picasso inspired portrait of Constance it brings me to the topic of sir Pablo. Rumor has it that he was kind of a jerk, a womanizer, a sexist buffoon. Yes, he was a clever artist who was instrumental in the cubism movement and a skilled impressionist. I don’t care for all of his art, but I have an appreciation for it. I, like so many, favor the work from his ‘blue period’. As an artist, I just wish he hadn’t been such an ass. I believe the content of an artist’s character is just as important as their art. It’s part of their story, and it can be a teaching tool, good or bad. But, I digress... Speaking of blue... Anyone else feeling the blues lately? I’ve been skating on the ice pond of depression lately myself. Some of this has to do with the unexpected passing of my Mom last year. Some has to do with the cesspool of hate that is dominating the news and the fabric of our society. How to combat the blues varies for each of us. My tools for working through and overcoming this include music, meditation, writing, eating healthier, walking, good people, good humor, and creating art. So, bleu cheese... Totally rando, I know. But a good binge of Buffalo wings dipped in mold enhanced fromage makes for a nice break in the day. Treating yourself to something you love once in a blue moon can offer a seratonin boost. Did I mention the blues? A dose of blues music, r&b, and angry rock can be a great catharsis for exorcising some of life’s demons. Sing about it, scream about, bang the drums, get it out, clear it up! I highly recommend going “Deep Blue” as an occasional therapy. Get that out of your system and then fire up “Here Comes The Sun” to lift your spirits. Get out there and listen to live music at Armory Square, the Tavern, Reunion, The Contented Cow, etc... Soak up some art at the many art galleries, art shows, and gift shops. Snarf down some tasty grub at the variety of restaurants that the Northfield area has to offer. You’ll feel better. “Daylight is good at arriving at the right time, it’s not always going to be this gray.” — George Harrison (George is often my go-to guy for what ails me.)

Celebrate the music of the Fab Four. The Cavern Lads are a Beatles tribute band that has been performing the timeless songs of this iconic band at venues in the Twin Cities area for years. The Lads take pride in authentically reproducing both the great music and vocal harmonies of The Beatles. Come enjoy a wide selection of The Beatles’ well-known chart toppers as well as many of their deeper album cuts. Jud Hailey • 8:3011:30pm

Rosen Method Bodywork uses gentle touch and words to relieve muscle tension or pain and to create more positivity and an enhanced sense of aliveness.

The Rosen Method process takes place on a massage table but, unlike massage, there is no active kneading of muscles, rather there is a quiet acknowledgment of the emotional holding in the muscles through gentle touch. The emphasis is Marion Rosen, founder of the Rosen Method, on being rather than doing or fixing a situation. studied breath and relaxation in the 1930s in As a result of the deep relaxation, a client is able Germany. People with relationship issues often achieve more clarity about themselves and their own internal processes as a result of this bodywork. This can positively affect their relationships.

Many clients who have been experiencing anxiety from known or unknown causes, depression or sleeplessness benefit through this work. Rosen Method Bodywork is often used with people who have felt disconnected from themselves and their senses due to histories of abuse or other types of trauma. Previous diagnoses of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are common in many clients.

Minimally, clients report that they feel lighter, less burdened and more alive following a Rosen Method Bodywork session. There may be a reduction in pain, a more positive attitude toward life, better self-awareness, enhanced relationships and, sometimes, deep healing of the self at the subconscious level. Rosen Method Bodywork is an effective complement to psychotherapy, medical treatments and other alternative modalities. It is a powerful tool for re-establishing our mind, body and spirit connections. Susan Dunhaupt, Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner, M.S. Community Counseling, is the owner of ENLIVEN! Great vehicles, food, music provided by Mike Eiler and more. More at facebook.com/FaribaultMainStreet/.

This Chicago/ NYC/Minneapolis singer, guitarist, songwriter draws from a poisoned well that runs deep – harsh reflection, brutal frankness, bittersweet inspiration, brief flights of sexual fantasy and blistering romance, but most of all, transcendent saving graces. With each album she expands her musical universe, stretching across the spectrum from indie pop to alt-country to full-tilt rock and roll, all the while writing better and better genuinely smart songs that are deeply personal yet touch on subjects and feelings everyone can relate to. Yasmineh returns in support of her seventh album, High Priestess And The Renegade – a mix of alternative, punk and folk – hailed as “one of the best albums so far of 2018” and earning high praise and five out of five star ratings from critics in the U.S. and Europe. Vintage Escapes Winery, Kilkenny

Paul Seeba • 7-10pm

10,000 Drops Craft Distillers, Faribault

Honesty is a quality getting rarer and rarer in rock and roll, but you can see, hear and believe it in Courtney Yasmineh. The Chicago/NYC/Minneapolis singer, guitarist, songwriter draws from a poisoned well that runs deep – harsh reflection, brutal frankness, bittersweet inspiration, brief flights of sexual fantasy and blistering romance, but most of all, transcendent saving graces. With each album she continues to expand her musical universe, stretching across the spectrum from indie pop to alt-country to full-tilt rock and roll, all the while writing better and better genuinely smart songs that are deeply personal yet touch on subjects and feelings everyone can relate to. Yasmineh returns in support of her seventh album, High Priestess And The Renegade – a mix of alternative, punk and folk – and hailed as “one of the best albums so far of 2018” and earning high praise and five out of five star ratings from critics in the U.S. and Europe. Reunion Stage, Northfield

Jazz trio The Willie August Project has released four CDs of original compositions and also performs a vast repertoire of standards, jazz classics, and progressive jazz tunes by artists like Pat Metheny as well as distinctive covers. Named for guitarist Ben Siems’ late grandfather, this jazz trio has racked up a host of national awards and honors, including #1 New Artist on Sirius-XM Real Jazz. Described by Cadence magazine as “a fountain of muted melody, with a masterful grasp of the guitaristic arts,” Siems writes heartfelt tunes that vividly portray settings from the Peruvian Andes to a bustling New York bridge to a misty morning at Port of Duluth. Co-founder Jeremy Hauer (drums) shapes the band’s instantly recognizable sound by “using his drum kit in a painterly, postmodern way” (Star Tribune), gliding between compelling whispers and dramatic flourishes. Top Minnesota upright bassist Graydon Peterson rounds out this powerhouse group whose music, as one audience member put it, “goes straight to the soul, almost bypassing the ears.” Cool music on a hot summer night! Tim Dallman • 8-11pm

Tavern Lounge, Northfield

A Rochester guitarist and vocalist who writes and performs his own material as well as an extensive collection of classic and contemporary rock, pop, country and folk cover songs. His original songs blend elements of all these styles in fresh and often surprising ways. More at timdallman.com. The Broken Heartland String Band • 8-11pm

Reunion Stage, Northfield

Hailing from the Twin Cities, the Broken Heartland String Band plays music that is wholly American in its roots. With anchors in blues, old-time, bluegrass, and honky-tonk, the band brings energy and soul with a selection of cover tunes and originals blended from the diverse musical backgrounds of the band’s five members. Joe Nicola holds down the low end on upright bass; Patrick Giblin manages soulful and wailing lead vocals while maintaining moving melodies on guitar; Wilson Goss keeps the toes tapping on banjo; and the band’s sound is completed by the sometimes dancing, sometimes battling interplay between Courtney Buck’s fiddle and Mark Wiltse’s harmonicas. The Broken Heartland String Band is out to provide a good time with wholesome, partner-swaying, knee-slapping, hootin’ and hollerin’ tunes. More at soundcloud.com/ brokenheartlandstringband.

A high-energy band blending blues, rock and bluegrass into a sound that some have called “bluesgrass.” The band knocks out top-notch original tunes inspired by the styles of Shane McGowan, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones and Bill Monroe. With a rough-and-tumble mix of guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, washboard, snare drum and accordion, Bernie King & the Guilty Pleasures are exactly what the doctor ordered. Be sure to wear dancing shoes. On the Lily PADio. In inclement weather, show moves inside. DJ • 10:30pm-close Grampa Al’s, Faribault
