The Great Northfield Bank Robbery: A Love Story
Disney’s Newsies
Directed by Rachel Haider, story by Bill McAuliffe and Graydon Royce. In 1900, Jim and Cole Younger, brothers from Missouri, had spent nearly a quarter century in Stillwater penitentiary for the notorious raid on the First National Bank of Northfield. As a movement for their pardon grew, a young reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press took an interest in the Youngers’ cause. Alix J. Muller, already distinguished in her journalism career at the tender age of 22, followed her nose for news and went out to Stillwater to interview Jim Younger. Alix came back with more than just a good story. She and Jim Younger began a mutual appreciation. After the famous bank robbers and killers were released, the relationship between Alix and Jim turned into its own story – one that shocked the upper crust of St. Paul. The star-crossed romance between an ambitious young woman of high society and an ex-con more than twice her age is a story that seems like fiction but it was once actual news. Tickets: $14 adults, $12 seniors or students, available at northfieldartsguild.org or 507-645-8877.
The Broadway musical presented by Paradise Community Theatre. Music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and book by Harvey Fienstein. Directed by Jon Terrill. Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right. Tickets: $15 members, $17 non-members, $11 students, available at the box office, 507-332-7372 or paradisecenterforthearts.org/purchase-tickets/.

Through the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbs we can heal the body, mind and spirit, which are called the “Three Treasures” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be used to address health concerns from infertility to pregnancy issues and postpartum care for both mother and baby. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be used to aide early pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and low appetite. During second and third trimesters, they can be used to alleviate sore back/hips,
urgency to urinate and pelvic pain. They can even help with things like stalled labor, an overdue baby, babies who don’t want to descend into the birth canal, cervical ripening, cervical opening and lactation issues. Acupuncture has also been used to turn breech babies with great success. Typically, only two to three acupuncture treatments along with Chinese herbs, which are safe for mom and baby, are needed to turn baby and ensure correct position for a healthy and successful delivery. Perimenopause and menopause can also be challenging as women transition into the next stage. Women in perimenopause and

On DNA… Is Geo. Washington your uncle? King Tut your cuz? Is Jack the Ripper your grampa? Ads where people find they’re related to fascinating historical figures, or discover an unknown sibling, pique our curiosity. Most of us identify our lineage through family folklore. Like Elizabeth Warren, we align with those stories, believing what has been repeated for generations. Enter DNA tests and the story is altered to one degree or another. When I was a kid my paternal grandfather said Jesse James was his second cousin, and I believed it. He wasn’t clear if it was by blood or marriage. Gramps was an old dude, born in 1894, and died when I was in Jr. High. On my mom’s side, a great-times-infinity uncle was allegedly an Earl in Sweden. And some of our Danish ancestors were rumored to be early merchant shipping magnates. So, do I have James Gang blood coursing through my veins? Am I a blue-blooded royal? My DNA… Ancestry.com and 23andMe revealed a combination of both what I already knew and some surprises. What I knew: I’m mostly Norwegian, some Swedish, Danish, English, Irish, and Eastern European. Surprise! I’m also Polish, French, Spanish/ Portuguese, and a tiny bit of Greek and Native American. DNA rels… The Jesse James connection remains a mystery. I’m not counting my royal beans. I have a few thousand 4th cousins across the globe. I can now pinpoint towns and villages from whence some of my people came, including those that filtered through Ellis Island. A few of my great-great-greats were Union soldiers in the Civil War. Basically, my ancestors got around. DNA misc… I also got valuable health data – it seems I come from fairly solid stock. This DNA fun got me thinking – what kind of ancestor will I be to my descendants? At the very least, I hope to be moderately interesting. Are you curious about your DNA? We could be related! To Jesse James! Think about that while you enjoy The Defeat of Jesse James Days – memorializing the takedown of my criminal ancestor. “Genealogy: In the end, it’s all relative.” — Unknown

Hailed as a “self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif” by the BBC, Pieta Brown first came to international prominence with the release of her debut album in 2002. Her latest album, Freeway, is an utterly mesmerizing collection, a delicate yet forceful reckoning with change that’s marked by both unabashed intimacy and a slow-burning intensity. Brown cut the album in just three days with an all-star band that included S. Carey, bassist Mike Lewis and guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker, with the resulting recording reflecting the foursome’s chemistry and shared passion for emotional exploration and sonic discovery. This lineup released the band’s ninth studio album in 2016.
