Truax combines traditional ceramic and found natural materials: “Through my work I attempt to create a sense of connection to nature in the viewer, yet through the utilization of abstraction avoid direct connections to specific places.” Watson uses colored pencil in his exploration and execution of secular and spiritual themes. His “regimented rectangles” or “color-on, color-off writing,” drawing technique expands on the already liberating notions of drawing – despite this regimentation. This first exhibit of this collection showcases “first” achievements throughout the company’s history – the first plants and workers, the first customers, the first sales and products, the first radio promotion, the first new products, the first famous television advertisement and the first production facility built outside of Minnesota. NHS will host additional thematic exhibits in 2018 before celebrating the centennial of the company with a major exhibit in 2019.

Service and Sacrifice: Northfield in the Great War – through Dec. 31 – World War I, or the Great War as it was called at the time, was devastating and affected many European countries before the U.S. joined. Northfield citizens, like others in the U.S. and throughout Minnesota, initially thought the war had nothing to do with them. But as the war continued, curiosity and even anxiety took over. Northfield citizens formed opinions and many answered the call to serve. This exhibit, the first in a series of three, focuses on how the Northfield community was affected by and reacted to the Great War.

Joy Jacobson, Paper Folk Art – Oct. 8-29 – Jacobson, living in Aikin, Minnesota, began cutting paper more than 40 years ago. Paper cutouts date back to 100 A.D. in China. The German word for this folk art form is “Scherenschnitte,” which means scissor cuts. Jacobson uses a small scalpel to cut out the intricate silhouette designs and places them on a contrasting background.

Written in the early 1940s by Bertolt Brecht, the play is a thinly veiled allegory of the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich, told through the borrowed plot of Shakespeare’s Richard III. Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls Singer and pianist Andrew Walesch is a new and exciting voice on the national jazz scene. Whether recording jingles, producing shows, composing and arranging, or singing as a solo artist and with big bands, Walesch is known for his unique approach to The Great American Songbook. He has sung and played on the stage of The Bluebird Café in Nashville and the legendary Chicago Theater and has appeared on the nationally syndicated broadcast Mountain Stage on NPR. In March 2015, he premiered his highly successful conception, 100 Years of Sinatra, to sold-out audiences at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres with the Andrew Walesch Big Band. Their show is a combination of Top 40-friendly originals, danceable current and classic country radio hits and some other real gems. Tanzenwald Brewing Co., Northfield Minneapolis-based acoustic folk, blues and country musician Chris Holm returns in support of his debut solo release, The Trains Don’t Run Here Anymore. A fingerstyle guitar picker and harmonica player, Holm channels the high-spirited liveliness of Charley Patton, thumping on his suitcase drum, attacking his guitar strings with abandon and shouting along in a gravelly howl, later to channel the lonesome sounds of a weeping slide guitar and a blue yodel. Despite his Northern Minnesota roots, Holm has formed an intimate connection with the music of the American South.

Spookfolk, jazz-oriented grooves define her situational compositions, harboring a voice like a rattlesnake perpetually fighting a dove. She finds creative ways to connect themes such as self-contemplation, nature, social and politically charged lyrics with healing music wrapped around it.

The Contented Cow, Northfield Musical barnstormers Jim Kirkendall and Stevie Low. One is folk, the other is quite a bit of rock ‘n’ roll. Each presents his own solo set and each draws from a deeper reservoir of experience. Kirkendall spent time as a full-time musician, playing coffeehouses and folk clubs across the U.S. and Canada. Low worked his way across the U.S. and Canada performing in clubs and on concert stages. In 2011 he was inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Buzzards. Expect an eclectic evening of original material and classic covers.

The visual images Ewald paints have to do with mapping. She strives to create work from different geological and psychological/emotional places, work that is informed by movement between time and place. Within this framework, she explores interior and exterior human connections – connections to the self, to others, to the natural world. A trail, a map-like mark, infuses her work with a grounding, and gives it a conceptual time and place. These works discuss light, space, color; they draw on the poetic nature of art. While most of them invoke the feeling of landscape space – broad and/or deep – some are closer to the center of ourselves. Ewald’s goal is for the viewer to spend some time with the art, to bring her or his own memories, experiences, curiosities to the work, wander the pathways, and perhaps find his or her own destination. Her ultimate desire is for the viewer to feel connection to her or his past and present.

Glynnis Lessing is a potter inspired by the bounty and beauty of nature around her, and by the wonderful arts community in Northfield. Her studio is in her grandfather’s old milking parlor on the ancestral farm where she lives with her family, surrounded by their small flock of chickens, trees her grandfather planted and the fertile earth. Lessing’s exhibit at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin, opened Sept. 15 and she will be teaching a workshop there Oct. 14 in conjunction with that show. She works full-time selling her work at Midwestern Art Fairs and is teaching a surface decoration class Wednesday afternoons at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis. Matthew Bunch is founder and owner of Dr. Jellyfish Studios. He’s known for his surrealist/dreamlike art. Every piece he creates is also a surprising 3D experience when viewed with 3D glasses. His art is meant to spark conversation for its amazing color, hidden symbols and, optionally, for its 3D experience. Bunch loves the interplay of color that creates the 3D effect, which he achieves using only Prisma color pencils and Microns ink pens. He uses color pencils with such brilliance that his colors look like oils. He prefers to use only pencils and ink out of respect and adoration for artists of the past, and in order to create his art without the use of modern technology. Kathy Miller is a watercolor artist who lives in Northfield. Her paintings reflect her passion for the beauty of nature, capturing fleeting moments in time when the magic of light changes the ordinary into the extraordinary. The paintings range in scope from intimate, close-up floral and still life compositions to broad, panoramic landscapes. The use of numerous layers of saturated color, intricate details and patterns, and strong value contrasts combine to enable her to create a highly sensory interpretation of the world she loves. Miller is a Signature Member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society (MWS), and her paintings have earned numerous awards, including Best of Show at the MWS Spring Juried Exhibition in 2013. Also in 2013, Kathy received a McKnight Individual Artist Grant awarded by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and completed thirty paintings as part of her grant project. Miller teaches workshops throughout the year in her studio in downtown Northfield. Giza has shared her love of painting through after-school art workshops for children, private lessons and paint workshops for adults as well as regularly scheduled painting events at many local and community establishments. One of Giza’s most unique pieces was a painted violin project with a rendering of the colorful Northfield community and its many wonderful landmarks and historical influences.

Dianne Lockerby

Ceramic Artist Pottery has always been a therapy for Dianne Lockerby, and she hopes her pieces will soothe you, too. New this year: woven dishes (yes, woven with clay) and three new styles of butter dishes. Just as clay changes from the bag to product, so do Lockerby’s creations from year to year. Sharol Nau

Painter / Photographer Reflections off water have been a fascination and inspiration for Sharol Nau. They are quickly photographed with her pocket-size camera. She also creates drawings and paintings from memory of the reflections she’s observed on creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes or fountains. A photo she took at Heath Creek is on exhibit at Northfield City Hall. Dale Brown

Glass Artist

Dale Brown loves glass fusing and has been experimenting and playing with glass since he took his first class more than 13 years ago. He enjoys using the bold, vibrant colors while working on new techniques such as making pattern flow bars, wire melts and murine. After the initial firing, the new glass pieces are cut with a wet saw, cold worked and then used as design elements in new pieces. Brown is a studio assistant in the Art Department at Normandale College, working in the fused glass, photography, and printmaking areas. He sells his artwork at local art fairs and art centers. He also teaches fused glass classes out of his home studio in Northfield and at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault. Silk Painter

Anna Chance is a silk painter, dancer and fiddle player. She is inspired by patterns she sees in nature, and enjoys bright colors and making other people feel beautiful. She hosts bring-your-own-wine classes in Faribault on silk and rayon painting and painting parties for birthdays and other group events. During parties and open house events, she gives her painters two options: â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can paint with either one paintbrush or with a paintbrush in both hands, as long as you are dancing!â&#x20AC;? Paradise Center for the Arts

Paradise Center for the Arts features three on-site galleries: Carlander Family Gallery, Lois Vranesh Boardroom Gallery and Corey Lyn Creger Memorial Gallery. Paradise also has three off-site galleries: Healing Arts Gallery at District One Hospital, F-Town Brewery (a collaboration with the Northfield Arts Guild) and the newest gallery in Sen. John Jasinski’s office at the Minnesota Senate building. The Hy-Vee gift shop also resides inside the Paradise Center for the Arts selling locally handmade artwork and crafts. Juried art exhibits are shown annually in the Carlander and Vranesh Boardroom galleries. The Corey Lyn Memorial Gallery is dedicated for students 18 and under. Northfield Arts Guild

The Northfield Arts Guild offers multiple opportunities for local visual artists to share and sell their work. The gift shop features the work of more than 100 Member Visual Artists. New work is constantly being added, so there is always something new to see. The Guild proudly hosts the Fine Craft Collective each November and December to be a one-stop shop for one-of-a-kind gifts. The main gallery features nine juried or invitational and three emerging artist exhibits a year. The Guild also presents Member Visual Artists’ work in six auxiliary spaces throughout greater Northfield at Allina Medical Clinic-Northfield, the Archer House River Inn, Tandem Bagels and other spaces. The 13th Annual South Central Minnesota Studio ARTour will take place Saturday, Oct. 21, and Sunday, Oct. 22, with some studios opening early on Friday, Oct. 20. Sites and times are listed online. Tour goers will get an inside look into artists’ studios to view and visit with them about various processes and techniques. Art mediums found on the tour include ceramics, painting, glass, wood, jewelry, metalwork, wood, book arts, textiles and photography.
