2022 CASEY TIBBS NFR LEGACY AWARD

TONIGHT WE HONOR 8-TIME PRCA

Dreams sometimes do come true.

Just ask legendary tie-down roper Joe Beaver, the 2022 Casey Tibbs NFR Legacy Award honoree. As a youngster, Beaver aspired to greatness and wanted make his mark in ProRodeo.

“I grew up when Larry Mahan and Phil Lyne were the two greatest of the great and you always want to become what you hope to be,” Beaver says. “I wanted to be like those two guys, my heroes. But you never know what life will throw at you.”

Life threw Beaver good fortune aplenty, which included three PRCA All-Around World Championships and ve PRCA Tie-Down World Championships. In all, he quali ed for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo® 22 times and won the tie-down average four times.

All of Beaver’s success adds up to him being a very worthy winner of the Casey Tibbs NFR Legacy Award. The award is named for Tibbs, the two-time PRCA All-Around World Champion (1951, 1955) and 5-time PRCA Saddle Bronc World Champion (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1959). Tibbs also won a bareback world title in 1951.

Longtime NFR General Manager Shawn Davis and other Gold Card members are behind the award, which was created to ensure the legends are remembered properly.

“The Gold Card committee has selected individuals to be recognized in the arena since their inception, but several years ago we agreed that some of those individuals being selected should have more to remember than just the recognition,” Davis said. “Clint Johnson and Rick Smith headed the committee to develop the Casey Tibbs Award and added the commemorative ri e and the name.”

Beaver accepted the Tibbs Award earlier today during the o cial PRCA Gold Card Reunion at the South Point. Gold Card members are NFR trailblazers over the age of 50.

Beaver is the third to receive the Tibbs honor, following Mahan and 9-time PRCA World Champion Ty Murray.

WORLD CHAMPION TIE-DOWN ROPER JOE BEAVER

“I always thought when I was at my best and at the top of my game, I wanted to be a little di erent,” Beaver says. “I probably wore a little di erent type of clothes than most timed-event guys, and I wanted to be a little more amboyant and have a lot of fun. By doing that, I maybe put a little more pressure on myself, but that is what I always saw in the likes of Casey Tibbs. What I did all started with Tibbs. To be honored with anything with his name on it is very special. They say you have a crown and it has jewels on it. This will be one of my brightest jewels.”

The pressure Beaver alluded to never seemed to phase him. He performed best when the stakes were highest, including in 1985 when he won his rst-ever go-round at the National Finals Rodeo.

“My dad said until the day he died that my rst run in the Thomas & Mack Center was the best run I ever made, because all of the pressure in the world was on me,” Beaver says. “Everybody knew I belonged there, but they still wanted to see how I dealt with that type of situation. I craved that moment for my entire life. I thought the bigger the show and the bigger the venue, the better I performed. From the beginning, I was so excited to be there, riding for the big money and under the brightest lights. There was no way I was going to let myself, or anybody who helped me get there, down.”

The red seats and yellow chutes of the Thomas & Mack Center have always been a part of Beaver’s legendary career.

“My career took o with the National Finals Rodeo move to the Thomas & Mack Center, so the arena was new to rodeo and I was new to professional rodeo,” Beaver says. “We both built upon that rst year in 1985. The Thomas & Mack Center is now synonymous with the National Finals Rodeo.”
