WE HONOR UNITED STATES ARMY

There is a common theme amongst our heroes who receive recognition during our NFR Military Honors presented by Boot Barn: the honorees always deflect the recognition to their fellow soldiers and others such as doctors and nurses.

Tonight is no different as U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Gene Humphrey is recognized. Humphrey flew UH-1B and Cobra gunship helicopters in support of U.S. and Vietnamese combat forces. He was with the 116th Assault Helicopter Company in Cu Chi until he was severely wounded. His call name was Stinger 85.

During a recent conversation, Humphrey spent most of the time discussing the 5,280 pilots, gunners and crew chiefs who are among the 58,000 dead soldiers listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. In addition, Humphrey said there were about 40,000 who went through flight school and estimated that about half of them were injured in battle.

“This honor gives me the opportunity to recognize the thousands of pilots and helicopter crew members who laid their lives on the line each mission,” Humphrey says. “Please make that the most important part of this story.”

Humphrey, a rancher and businessman from Wyoming and a key member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, says the excellence and dedication of the medical teams in Vietnam are why he is still with us.

“I am not here without the amazing care of the doctors and nurses who saved my life,” Humphrey says. “We had just finished a gun run about 15 miles north of Cu Chi in Vietnam when I got shot. When we landed, they started helping me, but I knew the artery was gone. They squeezed four pints of blood and hung two more, so I knew I wasn't in good shape. Dr. Dave Matlock spent an extra amount of time saving my leg by doing an artery and vein graft in the field. Beyond that, we did not have good communications, but he took the time to find a Military Affiliate Radio Stations area and contacted his wife. She called my mother to let her know that I would be OK.

Vietnam War veteran and helicopter pilot Gene Humphrey is the one honored by the NFR and Boot Barn, but he wants us to remember his fellow soldiers, nurses, and others in the line of duty who laid it all on the line, saving lives and defending freedom.

VEGAS NFR ICONS –Speed Williams, Rich Skelton LET ‘ER BUCK BUCKING STOCK OF THE YEAR

Team Ropers Speed Williams and Rich Skelton, who won eight Gold Buckles in a row, go to the rafters with banners and as true icons, while the rankest stock in rodeo is also honored. The NFR stock and contractors are the best in the world.

VEGAS NFR ICON – Joe Beaver

NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Robert Ingram

Joe Beaver won eight PRCA World Titles and qualified for the NFR 22 times between 1985 and 2006. Ingram, a hospital corpsman 3rd Class in the U.S. Marines, is a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, the nation’s highest honor.

We pause to remember our fellow cowboys and cowgirls who have passed away. Their memories will forever live in our hearts and minds, and include legends on and off the dirt. They each will be missed and we honor them with a final tip of the Resistol in addition to a moment of their own here at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Scofield was a U.S. Navy Captain and also a top rodeo photographer for decades. Plus, a strong team is the reason why the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is so successful.

HELICOPTER PILOT GENE HUMPHREY

“That is the kind of above and beyond effort I witnessed multiple times at the 12th EVAC hospital. During the nine months I was in the hospital, they told me they were going to have to amputate my leg a few times during surgeries. Each time I fortunately came out with my leg still there. It was the nurses who were always there with a smile and a twinkle in their eyes who helped me persevere. I think they had it as difficult as any of the guys pulling the trigger.”

As sometimes happens, positivity can come from tragedy and challenge. Humphrey ended up marrying Lieutenant Noreen Enterline, one of the nurses who cared for him during his lengthy hospital stay. She passed away from cancer in 2017, but is with him in spirit tonight. As are his fellow unit members.

“When I accept this honor, I will be thinking about the 54 guys from my unit who are on that wall and how they are sitting there at that big-ole poker table in the sky with a bottle of scotch waiting for me to show up so they can drop a coin in the jukebox,” Humphrey says.

VEGAS AND WRANGLER NFR CONTINUE PARTNERSHIP

Since 1985, Las Vegas and the Thomas & Mack Center have been the home to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. That will remain the case through at least 2035 as the PRCA and Las Vegas have agreed to a new and meaningful partnership to reward competitors, fans, sponsors, and contractors.

MILITARY NIGHT

Members of the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard and Space Force are honored for service, bravery, and selflessness. These are the true heroes and it is with deep appreciation we honor them. Tonight, World War II veterans Vernon Kuhlmann, Daniel Chevez, Onofrio Zicari, and Thomas Pearson are spotlighted.

HEART OF THE NFR –Grant A Gift Autism Foundation, Golden Circle of Champions and Exceptional Rodeo

Each year, NFR competitors spend time at events including Grant A Gift Autism Foundation, Exceptional Rodeo, and Golden Circle of Champions for kids dealing with cancer.

Unsung military heroes are the War Dogs. U.S. Marine Mark Vierig, a military dog handler, is honored. Also, Shawn Davis, a 3-time Saddle Bronc World Champion and NFR GM from 1986-2018, earns the Casey Tibbs NFR Legacy Award.

NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Taylor Gillespie

As an officer in the Army infantry, Gillespie led a platoon of 30 into the “Valley of Death” in Afghanistan, among other active-duty missions. Following his military service, Taylor and his wife, Jen, created Gillespie Performance Horses, which compete at the highest level around the country.
