CODY OHL AND JAMES TAYLOR CO DY O H L BECO M ES TH E 5TH VEGAS N FR I CO N AN D by Brian Hurlburt CODY OHL Now in its second year, the Vegas NFR Icon honor is already a well-established tradition. Tie-down roper Cody Ohl more than lives up to the prerequisites to earn the prestigious honor. Ohl won five tie-down roping gold buckles, and for good measure, he added an all-around world crown in 2001, when he doubled up by also winning the tie-down title. He also had 52 NFR go-round wins and qualified for the NFR 20 times. Ohl joins Billy Etbauer in 2023 as a recipient, and they each are added to the 2022 class that featured Trevor Brazile, Ty Murray and Charmayne James. Etbauer was honored on Dec. 8. “When I see that banner go up, it’s going to be very meaningful and probably emotional,” Ohl said. “To have my kids get to witness it, it’s just something they’ll never forget. My family was there to see it all. I was driven by a great family. In my prime, I had them there to support me and make life easy.”

EACH NIGHT, WE SPOTLIGHT HONOREES WHO HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY Dec. 8 NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Jack James

Jack James was a saddle bronc rider who joined the Navy in 1942. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Saipan, and San Francisco, and once competed in the Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1946.

Dec. 9 VEGAS NFR ICON VEGAS NFR ICON – Billy Etbauer & Let ‘er Cody Ohl & Buck Bucking Stock of NFR MILITARY the Year HONORS PRESENTED Saddle Bronc legend Billy BY BOOT BARN – Etbauer qualified for the James Taylor NFR 21 consecutive years and is the fourth to earn the Vegas NFR Icon Award. He won gold buckles in 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2000. Also, the top NFR roughstock is recognized.

Tie-Down legend Cody Ohl, a world champion with 52 NFR Go-Round wins, is the fifth Vegas NFR Icon Award winner with a banner lifted to the rafters. Also, James Taylor, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, is honored.

We pause to remember our fellow cowboys and cowgirls who have passed away. Their memories will forever live in our hearts and minds, and include legends on and off the dirt. They each will be missed.

Dec. 11 NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Dwight Birdwell & EMPLOYEE SERVICE AWARDS

Dwight Birdwell, a former Army soldier who received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2022 for his actions in the Vietnam War in 1968, is honored. Plus, a strong team is the reason why the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is so successful in front of and behind the scenes.

– DEC. 9 CO N GRESSI O NAL M EDAL O F H O N O R RECI PI ENT JAM ES TAYLO R IS RECOGN IZED JAMES TAYLOR U.S. Army veteran James Taylor is the second hero to be honored during the NFR Military Honors presented by Boot Barn. Taylor is a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, the most esteemed honor given in the United States. “The first thing I think about when I received the Medal of Honor or an award like tonight is, ‘why me?’” Taylor said. “I had the great men that I was serving with and I wasn't alone on that day. I wear this great medal in honor of them, and every man and woman who has served or who is serving today.” Taylor was awarded the medal on Nov. 9. 1967, for his actions during the Vietnam War in Que Son. He was a First Lieutenant in Troop B, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, Americal Division. He ended his military career with the rank of Major.

Ever humble, Taylor was thinking of others on that fateful day. “I was just a soldier doing his job and I loved the men who I was serving with,” Taylor said. “All I could think about on that particular day is let the counting begin with me, but please take all these guys home.”

Capt. Taylor, Armor, was serving as executive officer of Troop B, 1st Squadron. His troop was engaged in an attack on a fortified position west of Que Son when it came under intense enemy recoilless-rifle, mortar, and automatic-weapons fire from an enemy strong point located immediately to its front. … Capt. Taylor rushed forward and personally extracted the wounded to safety despite the hail of enemy fire and exploding ammunition. … His actions of unsurpassed valor were a source of inspiration to his entire troop, contributed significantly to the success of the overall assault on the enemy position, and were directly responsible for saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers.

Love of country still runs deep in Taylor’s heart. “We have to promote and foster patriotism amongst the young Americans today, and we have to encourage them to do the right thing, to become worthy citizens, to love your country, and to realize that freedom came at a terrible price,” Taylor said.

We deeply thank the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Since 1985, the NFR in Las Coast Guard and Space Force for defending Vegas has been giving freedom near and far. us some of the best moments in rodeo history. We took a look back on this night at 11 of our favorites. What would be your favorite NFR moments?

Dec. 14 CASEY TIBBS NFR LEGACY AWARD – Dean Oliver

Dean Oliver, an 8-time Tie-Down Roping and 3-time All-Around PRCA World Champion, follows Joe Beaver, Larry Mahan, and Ty Murray as recipients of the prestigious Casey Tibbs Award. Tibbs was often described as the Babe Ruth of rodeo.

Dec. 15 NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – Horse Soldiers

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, a 12-man team of U.S. Army Green Berets (ODA 595), on horseback, were inserted deep in northern Afghanistan as part of an unconventional mission known as Task Force Dagger, to help liberate Afghanistan. The movie, 12 Strong, is based on this group.

Dec. 16 NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY BOOT BARN – James Livingston

James Livingston is a retired United States Marine Major General, who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in 1968 during the Vietnam War.
