Racing icon ‘Barney’ O’Donnell remembered The greyhound racing world has lost another giant. In late April, James E. “Barney” O’Donnell, 89, passed away peacefully in Hollywood, Florida, after battling health issues for several years. The other half of one of the sport’s power couples, his wife Pauline, died early last year. Together, they rode a trail of
success in the greyhound business for nearly half a century. The O’Donnell team has operated by the Steubenville Stan Kennel at Wheeling Pawloski Island since the track opened in 1976. Two years ago, Steubenville was recognized and awarded a plaque for being the longest racing kennel in Wheeling Island’s history. According to Wheeling Island Racing Director Ben Travis, the longtime kennel will be closing its doors soon. “With the passing of Barney O’Donnell, Steubenville Kennel will be leaving our operation. Barney and Pauline had one of the best kennels that’s ever raced at Wheeling,” Racing Director Ben Travis said. “They were here on opening night back in 1976 and raced some of the best All-Americans in the country. It has been my pleasure through the years to have known them and to have worked with them.” Barney was born on April 7, 1929, in Saugus, MA. He grew up and lived in Lynn, MA – part of Greater Boston’s urban inner core – in his early adult years before making Miami Lakes his home in Florida. He has one younger
brother, William “Billy” O’Donnell. Vera Rasnake, who has worked in the greyhound industry for nearly her entire life and a close friend of the O’Donnells, said the brothers were forces in the racing world. “Both of the brothers were successful kennel operators – Barney’s track domination was well known in Florida while Billy dominated the New England circuit,” Rasnake said. “Of course, Barney had a lot of success at Wheeling and won countless stakes races across the country.” Billy O’Donnell, who raced at Wheeling at one point as Northshore Kennel, still operates a kennel at Southland Park Gaming and Racing. It is believed Barney met his future wife, Pauline, while operating a kennel in Florida, Rasnake noted. Pauline was looking to get her feet wet in American racing after having success as a kennel operator in Ireland headed by her famed Yellow Printer – the winner of the 1968 Irish Derby in 29.11. Soon thereafter, the Ireland native and Boston Irishman were married and the O’Donnells enjoyed years of success at numerous tracks across the country – either through kennel bookings or traveling for stakes competition.
Barney O’Donnell Barney died on the same day Flagler Greyhound Park in Florida ended racing. “It was ironic that he died on the same day Flagler ended greyhound racing,” Rasnake said. “One of Barney’s treasured wins at Flagler was with Derek’s Cadillac in the Flagler International Classic in 1978.” Barney was a huge horse racing fan too, Rasnake said. “I was sitting in Barney’s living room with him when Justify won the Triple Crown,” Rasnake said. “Winning jockey Mike Smith called Barney after all his interviews to share his excitement and they talked horses.” Barney had friends from all walks of life and cared for them deeply. “It would not be unusual to pay a visit to Barney’s Miami home and see celebrities kicked back relaxing in the living room or watch a pro golfer enjoying a morning game outside on the green while sipping coffee,” Rasnake said. “As the priest said in his
final service – Barney will be in the winner’s circle forever.” Greyhound owner and former kennel operator Dean Miner of Wheeling met Barney back in the late 1980s. “Barney was a truly iconic greyhound man. For some, it may have been difficult to see Barney and his personality around the shadow of his larger than life wife, Pauline, but make no mistake he knew the deal and enjoyed his life in his own way. As was the case with many of his contemporaries, who have passed, the stories that he and they could spin were some of the most entertaining that you’d ever come to know,” Miner said. “As is and was the case with many of our industry’s more know personalities, it’s easy to find something to disagree with, but for me, in
regards to Barney, I’ll remember the funny stories and the kick I got out of watching him and Pauline bicker. Rest in peace, Barney.” Throughout the years, Barney and Pauline raced some of the best greyhounds in the country and many were awarded national honors. My Tipper captured the Rural Rube Award in 1985 as the nation’s top sprinter and made both the 198485 All-America teams. Other AllAmericans owned fully or partially by the O’Donnells include Elite, 1974; Derek’s Cadillac, 1978; Printer Olly, Placid Ace, 1980; Olly’s Ace, 1984; Starlight Irene, 1997; Kiowa Molly Bell, 2005; Kiowa Delicate, 2006; Kiowa Willowwisp, 2007; Hallo Gold Acre, 2008-09; and Kiowa Jordan Doc, 2013.
O’Donnell’s Steubenville Kennel had numerous stakes winners at Wheeling – Flying Song (1977 Spring Derby); ML’s Sobo (1977 Top Dog Stakes); Blazing Red (1978 City of Wheeling Stakes); Cool Highway (1978 West Virginia Classic); Printer Olly (1980 West Virginia Classic); J’s Susie (1980 City of Wheeling Stakes); Olly’s Ace (1984 West Virginia Classic); Starlight Kemp (1997 Wheeling Invitational); Kiowa Tom Lyde (2001 Labor Day Classic); Kiowa Magnate (2009 Wheeling Winners Challenge); and Kiowa Lee Philli (2010 Night of Stars). The kennel had five Wheeling win champs – J’s Susie, 1980; DD’s Nelson (until mid-year), 1986; To The Tip, 1988; Stage Door Ace, 1989; and Kiowa Power Pak, 2009.

Bo Jangles Racks Up Another One ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – As RT’s Bo Jangles carried a sizeable lead over kennelmate Jiminy Reno entering the final turn in
the $8,000 T.L. Weaver Memorial Challenge on Aug. 18 at Derby Lane, track announcer Jim Peake’s voice could be heard clearly over the PA system. “Here’s the showdown we’ve been looking for: RT’s Bo Jangles… Jiminy Reno. The rest are far back,’’ Peake blared out. RT’s Bo Jangles, the 2017 All- by America first-team Don member and reign- Jensen ing national win champion, made sure that was the end of the drama in the 550-yard event. He
never let Jiminy Reno close, finishing 4-1/2 lengths in front of his challenger to give Cal Holland kennel a 1-2 showing in Derby Lane’s first stakes race of the 2018-19 season. “I didn’t really have a favorite, I just wanted them to run 1-2,’’ said Holland, a Derby Lane kennel owner and presi-

dent of the Tampa Bay Greyhound Association. “I’m just happy the way it turned out.’’ Breaking from post 4, RT’s Bo Jangles broke quickly on top and led every stride. He was the second wagering choice at 8-5 behind Jiminy Reno, the 7-5 favorite out of box 8. RT’s Bo Jangles paid $5.20 to win in 30.45 seconds. Holland got what he wanted in the T.L. Weaver championship post-position draw. “I didn’t want them side-by-side, and I didn’t want the 1 box,’’ he said. “I was happy at the post positions we got.’’ Seldom has Holland had two standout dogs of such caliber in his kennel at the same time, or maybe ever before. RT’s Bo Jangles (twice) and Jiminy Reno have teamed to win the Derby Lane win title for the past three meets, and the pair has combined for four stakes championships (three by RT’s Bo Jangles). “We rub them out every single day, and just go over them and make sure they don’t have any injuries,’’ Holland said. “That’s about all you can do. We do the same with the other dogs.’’ RT’s Bo Jangles won for the 82nd time from 137 starts for owner Randy Toler of Penrose, Colo. The $3,200 firstplace prize raised his career earnings to more than $67,000. The son of Kiowa Mon Manny and Penrose Karrie turns 4 years old on April 16, 2019. “We would like for him to win a few more races, because we want to put him up for stud afterwards when his career is over – maybe around his fourth birthday,’’ Holland said. “He would go back to Penrose, Colo., to
Randy Toler’s farm.’’ FIFTEENTH EDITION (2012) OF RT’s Bo Jangles has been a reliable performer since his first race on Sept. 12, 2016. Fathree Splashes Way to Classic Win DUBUQUE, Ia. – Fathree had the most victories of any greyhound in the field for the $30,000 Dubuque Course Classic final.
He added another one with a box-to-wire performance on Sunday, Sept. 2, at Iowa Greyhound Park on a day in which Mother Nature almost overshadow the star.
The 73-pounder, born Nov. 1, 2015 out of Omar Dodger – Lone Star Kelsey, easily broke on top
from the seven box and was never challenged. Fathree, 24-12-4-2, had early leads of a half-dozen lengths by and his winning Steve margin, officially Sigafoose listed as three lengths, was probably as close as any rival got to the champion. “I thought the race was won,” said Copper Kettle trainer Jake Ungs, “three steps out of the box. He broke and went to the front.” Still Fathree was not quite all alone. “I was watching the six (DS Rudolph),” pointed out Ungs. DS Rudolph, 21-8-3-4, out of the Xtrem Hess Racing L.L.C. Kennel, got up to second quickly and grimly gave chase to the wire, closing the gap from six to three lengths in the homestretch. The other factor in the championship was not show on the program. Fathree and his rivals had to deal with Mother Nature. A rainy afternoon got violent by post time. The final was delayed some 35 minutes as a tornado was spotted about
25 miles west of the track. The greyhounds, already out for the pre-race parade, were taken back into the paddock during the delay. “Fathree likes the rail,” said Ungs. “The track people did a good job of keeping the water off the rail. But it was okay, Fathree’s mother was a mudder and he’s a mudder.” DS Rudolph, who the patrons had made the favorite, was all alone in finishing second. Third, five lengths behind Rudolph and eight lengths off the pace, was Copper
Kettle’s Joe Johnny Cash, 21-4-3-4. Copper Kettle’s Fightin Flo, 21-2-3-5, was fourth followed by kennelmate Nickthebartender, 20-80-1. Doing the math, Copper Kettle had four of the first five finishers. Sixth was Bgr Sorcerer (Boeckenstedt), 25-4-6-3 and Sg Lady Luck (Xtrem Hess), 15-42- was seventh. Bgr Firestorm (Boeckenstedt), 19-2-2-5, had major trouble in the first turn and never recovered in finishing eighth. For the patrons, Fathree paid $7.00, $4.00 and $2.80; DS Rudolph paid $3.80 and $2.80 and Joes Johnny Cash paid $3.00. The 6-7 Quiniela paid $10.20; the 7-6-2 Tri-Box paid $44.80; the 10-cent Superfecta 7-62-5 paid $54.50 and the 10-cent Pick 4 (1-8-7-A) paid $12.90. The rest of the performance belonged to Mother Nature as the final three races on the card had to be cancelled due to the increasing poor weather. Pictured left to right: Tristin Miller, Patrol Judge; Brian Carpenter, Director of Racing /General Manager; Sheila Ungs, Wife of the David Ungs owner of Copper Kettle Kennel; Liz Fossum, Leadout; Jennifer Hamilton, Kennel Helper; Jake Ungs, Trainer for the Copper Kettle Kennel; Jarrod Dura, Racing Secretary; and Winner of the $30,00 Dubuque Classic, Fathree.
Goldiggin Decka pounds the pay sheet The last two years, Goldiggin Decka has quietly been one of the top sprinters at Tri-State Greyhound Park and now Wheeling Island.
The West Virginia-bred greyhound is a blue collar competitor – the kind owners, trainers and even gamblers truly love. Goldiggin Decka has hammered the pay sheet since breaking in at Tri-State in late 2016. In her 93 career races, she has finished in-themoney in a sparkling 75 percent of her races. “ W h e n by Goldiggin Decka Stan came up to Wheeling Pawloski early this year from Tri-State, her timing was off just a bit. Once she got her break down, she’s ripped off a lot of pay sheets,” Imark Kennel trainer Scott Purdy said. “She’s been like an ATM machine at both racetracks and she gets respect from the gamblers. She’s a grinder.” An April 2015 greyhound out of Djays Octane-Kitz, Goldiggin Decka climbed the ladder to Grade AA at Tri-State in 13 starts. She had four seconds and two fourths in her first six top grade races before romping to a 4 ½-length victory. Goldiggin Decka raced out of the Haber Racing Kennel at Tri-State and was trained by Terry Haber, who moved his operation to Wheeling this year under the Imark name. “She wanted to get out of the box and go … she’s one very consistent greyhound who tried every time out,” Haber, recalling Goldiggin Decka’s days at Tri-State, said. “I love those kinds of greyhounds and would love to
have another 20 like her.” In March 2017, Goldiggin Decka captured the $35,000 West Virginia
Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Juvenile Stakes at TriState. She rushed out to an early lead in the final and never looked back in winning by 2 ½ lengths in 30.57. In 51 lifetime starts at Tri-State, Goldiggin Decka had 16 wins, 15 seconds, 6 thirds and 3 fourths – a 78 percent mark on the pay sheet. She never dropped in class after reaching Grade AA at Tri-State. This year at Wheeling through August, Goldiggin Decka had 10 wins, 11 seconds, 4 thirds and 5 fourths in 42 races – a 71 percent in the money

for Winter Review finish. She’s only dropped once after
climbing to Grade AA at Wheeling. “Just like at Tri-State, she’s been steady, solid. Right now, she may be the best greyhound in the kennel,” Purdy said. “Her percentage at Wheeling isn’t quite as good as Tri-State because I think it’s a little tougher up here.” Goldiggin Decka needs to be near the front early in her races to be successful. “Breaking is her game and she’ll battle for the front. She needs to go to the lead or be close early,” Purdy said.

“If she clears third or fourth, she still can hit the ticket. She isn’t going to catch too many greyhounds from off the pace.” Goldiggin Decka prefers the rail, Purdy said, but “post position doesn’t matter as long as she breaks and has a lane to go to the first turn. She’s smart too – she’ll move off the rail to go around greyhounds and races well in traffic.” The sprinter had a hot streak from mid-July through mid-August – winning four of her six top grade starts
along with a third and fourth. In three of the victories, Goldiggin Decka was on top heading down the backstretch while in her other win she closed from second in the homestretch. “She can put some wins together as long as she hits her break,” Purdy said. Overall, Goldiggin Decka – owned by Monroe Racing – has 26 wins, 26 seconds, 10 thirds and 8 fourths in her 93 races. Purdy planned to enter his sprint ace in Wheeling’s $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Stakes event in October.

A brief look at recent developments in racing.
Track Preparations Underway for Fall Meet
Although it’s only mid-August, the racetrack at the NGA is already undergoing pre-meet preparations. Some 70 tons of sand have been added to the existing surface and the entire track is undergoing a fine tuned grading. Dallas Jenne, who oversees track maintenance, commented on the ongoing efforts, “We lose a lot of surface due to wind and rain during the non-racing months so it’s important we get the right amount of sand added back in”. “And in adding that much sand you obviously need to put the track back to proper grade”, he added.
Once all the sand is added and the grading done, Dallas will start his daily maintenance routine including, dragging, leveling, watering and more, until the meet is over. Over the years, the NGA track has been a safe and consistent surface for all the pups at the meet thanks to the efforts of Dallas and others before, during and after the meets.
20 Wheeling greyhounds have won at least 10 in a row
(NOTE: August marks 42 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling. In conjunction with the anniversary, this column will feature articles related to the track’s history. Today, greyhounds winning at least 10 races in a row during their careers are highlighted). In 42 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling Downs/
Island, there have only been 20 win streaks of 10 or more races. They are rare, and a number of factors play roles in long winning streaks. Local greyhound fan and historian Robin Reed, who has tracked Wheeling racing since its inception in 1976, feels a streak of 10 or more is a sign of a truly elite greyhound. “Of all the greyhound stats, total wins, stakes wins, and so forth, I think achieving a win streak of 10 or more races is probably the most difficult due to the fact that so many obstacles need to be overcome. A lot of greyhounds are very dependent on a good post position, but a big win streak will surely contain some less than ideal holes,” Reed said. “The Grade AA fields these greyhounds face will have some topnotch opponents along the
way. Weather can also be an obstacle if sloppy or muddy track conditions prevail.” The longest Wheeling winning streak is 16 in a row by Casual Casey. The sprinter, who had a three-month layoff during his streak, set the mark in 1994-1995 with all of his races against Grade AA competitors. Next in line is marathon standout Steph’s Good with 15 straight victories in 1987. She set the 7/16ths track record in three consecutive races during her streak. Reed is amazed anytime a greyhound goes on an extended winning streak. “For any greyhound to be at his or her best without missing a beat for what amounts to around two months is astounding,” Reed said. Following is a listing of the 20 Wheeling win streaks of at least 10 in a row, date accomplished and how the streak ended. Casual Casey: 16 straight 5/16ths wins

Wheeling greyhounds racing straight to Grade AA highlighted
(NOTE: August marks 42 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling. In conjunction with the anniversary, this column
will feature articles related to the track’s history. Today, greyhounds reaching Grade AA undefeated during their careers are highlighted). In the history of Wheeling Downs/Island, 28 greyhounds have climbed the ladder straight to Grade AA after winning their Maiden debut. Of those 28 greyhounds, nine went on to capture at least their first start against Grade AA company. The first Wheeling greyhound to go straight to Grade AA undefeated was Royal Onyx in 1978, winning his first five starts – Maiden and Grades C, B, A and AA. The last racer to accomplish the feat was Atascocita Sig in 2016, capturing his first five races – Maiden and Grades D, C, B and A. The Wheeling record for most victories in a row to start a career is 12 by Kiowa Sweet Trey in 2001. The sprint star won Maiden, Grades D, C, B, A and seven in Grade AA. Kiowa Sweet Trey broke the mark of 10 straight career-opening wins by Onie Reid in 1985-86. Onie Reid was victorious in Maiden, Grades C, B, A and six in Grade AA. Although Kiowa Sweet Trey and Onie Reid are regarded as two of the best greyhounds to ever grace the Wheeling oval, most of the racers who reached Grade AA undefeated weren’t superstars. It’s a rare feat as only 28 greyhounds have turned
the trick since the track opened on Aug. 18, 1976. Following are the nine greyhounds who raced straight to Grade AA undefeated and then won at least their first top grade start, year accomplished and number of careeropening victories: Kiowa Sweet Trey – July thru Dec. 2001; won 12 in a row; M, D, C, B, A, seven in AA. Onie Reid – Dec. 1985 thru January 1986; won 10 straight; Maiden, C, B, A, six in AA. Final Vote – June 2013 thru July 2013; seven wins; Maiden, C, B, A, three in AA. Itsa Screamer – Nov. 1998 thru December 1998; six wins; Maiden, C, B, A, two in AA. AMF Bone Bruise – April 2009 thru May 2009; six wins; M, D, C, B, A, AA. Slatex Johnny – November 2003 thru December 2003; six wins; M, D, C, B, A, AA. Soul Cipher – December 2000 thru January 2001; six wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A, AA. Iruska Zederiah – January 1999 thru February 1999; five wins; M, C, B, A, AA. Royal Onyx – May 1978 thru June 1978; five wins; M, C, B, A, AA. Following are the 19 greyhounds who climbed the ladder straight to Grade AA, but did not capture their initial top grade race, year accomplished and number of career-opening victories: Atascocita Sig – March
2016 thru April 2006; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. WW Ruff Enough – October 1998 thru November 1998; Maiden, D, C, B, A. KB’s Try This On – June 2013; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Mansfield Hollow – July 2011 thru August 2011; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Go Bon Jitterbug – November 2009 thru January 2010; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Mac’s Wynken – June 2010 thru July 2010; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Bella Daucus – November 2009 thru December 2009; five wins; Maiden, D, C, B, A. Pat C Clement Passes Away
Sad to get word that Pat Collins’ great greyhound, Pat C Clement has passed away. The champion racer and sire died on August 24 at the
Legg farm in Colorado where he had been living out his life as a pet with Herb and Karen Legg for the past three years. The 2004 son of Flying Penske-Pat C Clementine will be remembered for his racing career and will continue to be an influence in bloodlines for years to come. Clement was as good as advertised from the beginning. On July 13, 2006 he won his first maiden race at Raynham/ Taunton by 12 lengths. He would move up to grade A just six starts later, never to see anything but top grade races for the rest of his career. He would peel off win streaks of 8, 8 and 10 winning many races by double-digit lengths in blistering fast times. Along the way he grabbed two Night of Stars wins in 2006 and 2007 and finished 2nd in a third NOS race later in 2007. His overall career record ended up at 128-8620-9-2. His stud career started a bit slowly but has taken off in the last few years. He finished 8th in the sire standing for 2015 moving up to 6th after 2016 and climbing to 3rd in the final standings of 2017. He has produced many great racers, stake finalists and stake winners including; Dare Devil Deven, Oaks Maddy, KL’s Suede, AJ’s Callie, Kentucky Kat, PJ Peytonmanning, Daily Prayer, Jack’s Lil Bigman, Bart’s Big Bang and many more. RIP Pat C Clement
and a job well done to Pat Collins and all involved with this great greyhound.
The National Championship Race to return in 2019…
By Michael D. Frino With the promise to make it “bigger and better,” United Greyhound Racing and its partners have announced the return of the 550 national championship race in 2019. There will be a change in both sponsor and venue for this stakes event. WatchandWager is the new sponsor, and the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track will be the host of this invitational stake race to be held on January 26, 2019. After three very successful years at the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room, the 550 race moves to a larger facility in order to accommodate all who wish to attend. In three years, the 550 national championship race grew to become one of the most talked about and marketable race events in our sport. Its return to the greyhound racing stakes circuit has been eagerly awaited by greyhound racing enthusiasts, and its revival in 2019 should provide a welcome boost to our industry. The race format will remain the same. Eight of the country’s best greyhounds will be invited to participate
in the WatchandWager Naples 550 national championship race. Two of the greyhounds will earn their invitation by winning designated auto-qualifying stake races. Southland Park’s WatchandWager Kings vs Queens Challenge, as well as the WatchandWager Secretary’s Choice at Iowa Greyhound Park have both been designated as autoqualifiers. It is also possible that another bid will go to a greyhound from the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track. The remaining five greyhounds will be selected based on their performance in the UGR Top 25 Poll, and by recommendation of the 550 selection committee. We still have plenty of racing left before invitations go out in late November, but greyhounds such as Konomi and Flyin Jiggylpuff from Southland Park, and RT’s Bo Jangles and Jiminy Reno from Derby Lane are certainly among the early list of names that could be competing for the national championship in January. The estimated purse for the 2019 WatchandWager Naples 550 is $45,000$50,000. As in the previous 550 stakes, a minimum $3,000 purse is rewarded to any greyhound that participates in the race. The past winners of our national championship
race have been Husker Magic (Derby Lane), Need My Moneynow (bestbet), and Oaks Maddy (Southland Park). All three greyhounds went on to earn AGTOA All-America honors. United Greyhound Racing is pleased to have WatchandWager- one of the leading online Advanced Deposit Wager services- as the new title sponsor. Their commitment to making the WatchandWager Naples 550 our sports signature eventwill be instrumental in ensuring the growth of our national championship race. In addition to sponsoring the national championship race, WatchandWager is also working on preliminary plans to sponsor a handicapping contest. The finals will most likely take place on the 550 weekend. The agreement of the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track to host the national championship race hopefully secures a permanent venue for the 550 event. The Naples track has been the home of some of the sport’s top greyhounds, and has also hosted some of the more prestigious stake races in past years. It is expected that a list of well-known competitive kennels will be booked at the Naples track for the 2018-2019 meet which begins in late December. At the time of this writing, there are a lot of unknowns with regard
to greyhound racing in Florida. However, the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound will host the national championship race on January 26, regardless of the Florida amendment outcome. Southwest Florida is a beautiful area to visit, so the hope is that many from the greyhound community will make the trip to see our sports national championship event. Saddled between the NGA Fall Meet and Spring Meet, it is a great time and place for all to get together in Florida. You will be able to find Information on the weekend activities, hotel information, and the race contenders, as soon as they become available, at the United Greyhound Racing website (www. unitedgreyhoundracing. com) or Facebook page. Make your plans early, and become part of an exciting weekend where eight of the top greyhounds compete for our sport’s national championship.
BS Happy shines in new home BS Happy opened her career at Wheeling Island in November 2016 with a 6 ½-length Maiden victory before heading to NaplesFort Myers Greyhound Track in Florida. Now she’s back in Wheeling and making a name for herself over the 3/8ths distance.
Since moving to the longer middle distance course, BS Happy has 10 wins, 6 seconds, 1 third and 1 fourth in 23 starts – a 77 percent mark on the pay sheet. Seven of her victories have come against Grade AA by Stan competition. “BS Happy is one Pawloski of the cornerstones of our kennel right now,” said trainer Frank Pellittere, who came to Wheeling earlier this year after handling the Sarras Kennel at Naples. “She has taken to the track and racing very well.” BS Happy, a May 2015 greyhound out of Djays Octane-BS Hip Hop, competed at Naples-Fort Myers where she was trained by Pelliterre before coming back to Wheeling in late March. After failing to hit the ticket in four sprint starts, BS Happy was moved to 3/8ths and has blossomed into one of the track’s top middle distance racers. “She was getting outrushed to the first turn in 5/16ths, and when she felt pressure, she would back out. We were hoping with the shorter distance to the first turn in 3/8ths she would be able to get out of the box faster and clear (the field),” Pelliterre said. “We tried Happy in 3/8ths a few times at Naples and she came up short, so I am thrilled how well she’s raced here at Wheeling.” The 3/8ths distance at Naples is 660
yards while Wheeling is a little longer at 678 yards. After racing second in her first 3/8ths start in Wheeling in Grade C, BS Happy went to the front quickly and romped to a 13-length victory in her next outing. She won Grade B three starts later by 4 lengths, and continued to hit the board as she climbed the ladder to Grade AA.
“I started to feel she could be a pretty good 3/8ths greyhound after she won Grade B and continued to break well in Grade A, but I never expected her to do what she’s done in Grade AA,” Pelliterre said. Starting in early June, BS Happy exploded – winning eight out of her 12 Grade AA middle distance trips with a pair of seconds. In six of the wins, BS Happy went right to the front and never looked back while she closed from second in the stretch in her other two top grade victories. At one point, BS Happy won four in a row. “She’s in a zone right now. When the box opens, she’s firing right out,” Pelliterre said. “As long as she keeps breaking, she’ll be a dangerous greyhound. She’s tough to catch on the lead.” Steve Sarras Kennel’s BS Happy has turned into one of Wheeling’s top middle distance runners after returning from Naples-Fort Myers racetrack in Florida. Kennel-mate TF Trump Wins had a hot streak in 3/8ths earlier this summer too – hitting the pay sheet in 15 straight races. A November 2015 greyhound out of Flying Coal City-TF Ashley, Trump Wins opened his career at Ebro in July 2017 before moving over to Southland three months later. He had 20 sprint starts at the Arkansas track before coming up to Wheeling. After a second and a third in five 5/16ths races in Grade D in Wheeling, Pelliterre moved TF Trump Wins to 3/8ths where he has 4 wins, 10 seconds, 2 thirds and 1 fourth in 18 trips – while climbing the ladder to Grade AA. “I watched video of Trump Wins in his sprint races and saw some ability for him to go distance,” Pelliterre said. “He broke decent in 5/16ths, outrushed to the first turn and then came again. So far, he’s made me look good.” Like BS Happy, TF Trump Wins needs to get out of the box quickly and clear in the top two or three. “Hitting the ticket in 15 straight

races, some in Grade AA, and the quiniela in 13 of those 15 starts is very impressive,” Pelliterre said. Pelliterre feels the distance greyhound would have more victories if not for his racing style. “He runs so wide in the home-

Adoption Night at IGP DUBUQUE, Iowa – Friday, July 13, was the lucky day for the adoption program at the Iowa Greyhound Park. It was Adoption Night.
“It is the third year we’ve had the Night,” said Adoption Coordinator Corey Morris, who has been the coordinator at IGP for 15 years. The Night is a reunion for those who have adopted and also a fundraiser for the IGP program.” This year’s evening brought back folks from (in no particular order) “Canada, Michigan,” said by Morris, “Illinois, Steve Kansas, Wisconsin, Sigafoose Minnesota, Indiana, Mississippi and Missouri. As you can see, they came from all over.”
Once at the IGP, there were vendors, the radar run, silent auctions and bag raffles at hand. Three trophies highlighted the evening. One was for the most returners; one for the most entertaining and one for the “I’ve still got it” (fastest). However, this year’s Night had an uninvited guest. An hour and a half
into the evening, a thunderstorm hit the area, giving everyone and everything quite the drenching. “Because of that,” said Morris, “our fundraiser produced only about a third of the donations that we got the first two years. A couple of our guests did tease me, calling storm ‘Hurricane Corey’ because we had winds up to 70 miles an hour.” Saturday morning, the adoptees came back for a behind the scene tour of the kennels and the track. They met with trainers and had a nice questionand-answer session. “We had a pretty good crowd for the tour,” said Morris. “They got to find out about the life of their greyhounds before the adoptions.” Adoption Night “was fun and educational,” said Morris. “We are going to have it again next year.”
Taxes and Finances Bottom-line hobby write-offs by Mark Battersby
L
ast December’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) creaed quite a few tax breaks for businesses while, at the same time, eliminating quite a few of the tax breaks used by so many individuals. Fortunately for the owners of money-losing greyhound-related activities, those inevitable losses weren’t impacted too badly. Those operating a business
that generates a loss for the year can generally deduct the full amount of the loss on their annual tax return -- if the activity is a business in the eyes of the IRS. The resulting loss can reduce income from other sources such as self-employment, wages, business income or investments. The picture is somewhat bleaker if the money-losing activity must be treated as a not-forprofit “hobby.” Prior to the TCJA, hobby-related expenses could be deducted up to the amount of income from that activity. However, those expenses were treated as miscellaneous itemized deductions and could only be written-off to the extent they exceeded two-percent of adjusted gross income. Those othewise allowable hobby deductions were completely disallowed for those subjected to the alternative minimum tax (AMT). The TCJA eliminated the write-off for miscellaneous itemized deductions formerly subject to the two-percent threshold -– eliminating any deductions from hobby activities. Today, hobbyrelated expenses cannot be deducted while all revenue from that activity
must be reported and taxes paid.
The ground rules
Most assume the hobby loss rules (the actual name in our tax law is “Activities Not Engaged in for Profit”) apply only to sole proprietorships. Unfortunately, the hobby loss rules apply to any business -- S corporations, LLCs, partnerships, etc. Only regular (C) corporations are truly immune. The rules also apply by activity. That means combining two activities to have the losses from one offset the profits of another is usually a “no-no.” Suppose for example, a taxpayer has an S corporation that rents heavy construction equipment and turns a regular profit. The same taxpayer also races several greyhounds all-the-while racking up bills. Although the S corporation may generate a profit, the IRS can claim greyhound racing is not an activity “engaged in for profit” and disallow those losses. Obviously, if the S corporation’s primary or first business was greyhound breeding, training or kennel operation, it’s more than likely the IRS would consider
the money-losing activity to be part of the other, profitable activity.
Profits as the goal–eventually
How can anyone hope to argue with the IRS’s labeling of their activity as a hobby or, more importantly, hope to achieve the label of a tax business? The key to treating any activity as a tax business is profit motivation; an activity carried on with the “reasonable expectation” of profits -– not necessarily actual profits -- qualifies as a business under our tax laws. With profits in three out of five consecutive tax years, it is up to the IRS to prove the activity is a hobby. In the case of an activity of breeding, training, showing, or racing horses –and only horses -- the three out of five rule is a two years out of seven. Without profits, it is the greyhound owner, breeder, trainer or kennel operator who must prove that the activity is a business -– if asked. Proving that an activity is business for tax purposes, means a profit motive must be present and some type of economic activity must be conducted. According to our lawmakers the following factors are usually considered: -- The manner in which the activity is conducted -- The expertise of the taxpayer -– or his or her advisers -- The time and effort expended by the taxpayer in carrying on the activity -- The expectation that assets used in the activity may appreciate in value -- The success of the taxpayer in
carrying on other similar or dissimilar activities -- The taxpayer’s history of income or losses with respect to the activity -- The amount of occasional profits, if any, which are earned -- The financial state of the taxpayer, and -- Elements of personal pleasure or recreation. Enjoying the activity is rarely a critical factor. The fact that personal pleasure is derived from engaging in the activity is not sufficient to cause the activity to be classified as not engaged in for profit -- if other factors show a profit objective. What’s more, an activity will not be treated as not engaged in for profit merely because the taxpayer has purposes or motivations other than solely to make a profit. After all, when it comes to determining whether an activity is engaged in for profit, all of the facts and circumstances must be considered. No one factor is determinative in making this determination.
Complying for compliance
The IRS likes to see involvement in an activity along with the expectation of profits. Thus, our voluminous tax rules limit deductible losses from so-called “passive activities.” Generally, losses from passive activities may not be deducted from non-passive income (for example, wages, interest, dividends -– or profits from another business. A passive activity is one involving any trade or business in which the taxpayer does not materially participate. Materially participating can mean participating in the activity on a regular, continuous, and substantial basis during the year (facts and circumstance test) or putting in more than 500 hours each year. A taxpayer will also be treated as materially participating in the greyhound-related activity if they spend at least 100 hours in the business -regardless of whether anyone else spends more than 100 hours -- and if he or she spends at least 500 hours in all of
his “significant participation activities.” Activities performed in the capacity of an investor, do not qualify as participating in an activity, unless the individual is directly involved in dayto-day management. Under the facts and circumstances test, management activities are not taken into account if another person also receives compensation for management services relating to the activity or if another person performs more management services (by time) relating to the activity than the taxpayer.
Home offices, studios and shops
The TCJA eliminated the employee home office deduction by taking away the miscellaneous itemized deduction. The good news is that those who are self-employed or who run a business from home can, even after the TCJA, deduct home office expenses against business income. Every business owner, even someone with only the “intent” to show a profit from his or her greyhoundrelated activity, is entitled to a tax deduction for the expense of maintaining an office, shop or kennel at home. Naturally, a deduction for the expenses of using a home for business purposes cannot be claimed unless the expenses are attributable to a portion of the home (or a separate structure) used exclusively on a regular basis. The home workspace is also deductible if used as the principal place of a business, as a place of business that is used by customers in meeting or dealing with the taxpayer in the normal course of business; or in connection with the greyhound-related operation if a separate structure that is appurtenant to, but not attached to the home. A new, simplified option offers a standard deduction of $5 per square foot of a home office used for business purposes with a maximum of 300 square feet. This simplified option does not change the criteria for who may claim the home office deduction; it merely simplifies the calculation and recordkeeping requirements.
Bottom-line success
What are your chances if challenged by the IRS? Based on the court cases (there have been hundreds of them over the years), the IRS is victorious in the vast majority. But a closer examination shows most taxpayers lose because they’re not taking even the most basic steps to improve their position. Obviusly, there’s nothing you can be done to make the greyhound-related activity not have an element of pleasure, but everyone can keep good records -- probably the most important factor when attempting to prove a profit motivation. In addition to keeping good records, every -greyhound owner, breeder and trainer should: -- Analyze their operation regularly (at a minimum, semiannually; quarterly or monthly is better, particularly if there are significant losses) -- Get advice from experts -– and act on it -- Change operations to improve profitability -- Spend as much time as possible on the activity -- Keep a log or diary of time spent, work performed, etc. -- Document problems beyond your control, e.g., sales were down in 2013 because __of a fire in the adjacent store__ -- In general, conduct the venture in a business-like manner.
Uncle Sam’s generosity
Our tax laws no longer allow income from a greyhound-related activity to be offset or reduced using the activity’s expenses. In other words, that miscellaneous itemized deduction is no more. If, however, the greyhound-related activity is operated as a business the tax laws permit even more expense deductions to the point where they offset wages, savings and investment income -– and the tax bill on that income from other sources. Is your greyhound-related activity a tax business?
AGP Gets a Makeover Abilene Greyhound Park, which has been “schooling for the future” for over 20 years under the stewardship of Maury Flynn, has
recently undergone some renovations making for a more enjoyable overall experience at the track. In addition to replacing or repairing the entire rail system, a new “hospitality” building has been added near the existing grandstand area. It includes seating, bar-b-cue grills, big screen TV’s, Kennel and farm signage and a fire pit. Visitors to the facility can now enjoy the comforts of home while schooling and by maybe even some Jim cold beverages dur- Gartland ing the evening hours. The outside of the new addition is now adorned by a couple of large,
ornamental iron greyhounds which have a story of their own. Mick Ryan came across the decorations and purchased them. He also brought back the story of the ornamental hounds as told by the original owners: Keith Brumbaugh grew up in the country, half way between Tescott and Ada, Kansas. He was the 15th child
of 16 children born to Harry and Julia Brumbaugh. Keith began his career with greyhounds when he came home from the Army in 1960. He hunted with his Uncle, John Lee Horting, and cousin, Larry Horting. Keith was given a pregnant female greyhound from Harold Moracle of Tescott, Ks. The female’s name was Cindy, who was a Lawrence Clemmons’ bred female. The stud dog was a Pete Walters’ bred dog named Jack. Out of the first litter, there was a dog named Ike. Ike was used as a breed dog. All of Keith and his brother Adam’s generations of dogs went back to Cindy and Jack’s breeding with a mix of salukis, registered greyhounds, Scottish deer hound, and English greyhounds. Keith and Adam Brumbaugh hunted coyotes for 50 years together. Keith was always the driver and Adam was
the rider. Some of the dogs Keith bred his female’s to were Maltoff, Bing Lyon, Jerry Peck and John Tanzer dogs. Keith kept about 10 dogs at all times which was enough for a set of dogs on each side of the dog box. Keith raced some of his Shag dogs at the Lure races in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas. The dogs chased a lure on a quarter mile track on a dirt or grass surface. The biggest Lure race was the annual Loomis, Nebraska races, where they had about 100 races a day. Keith’s wife, Karen, wanted to give Keith something special for his birth-
day about 25 years ago. She took a very small picture of a racing greyhound and re-drew it onto many pieces of poster board. It was 8 ft. long. She cut it out and asked her brother, Scott Rice if he could make the greyhound on a piece of steel. He had Keith’s other brother-in-law, Stan Wohler help him and they made 2 of the silhouettes out of the sheet of black steel. Keith had 5 dog pens on the East side of the road and 3 large pens on the West side of the road. Each location had a building on it. Scott brought the greyhounds over and helped Karen
drill the holes and hang the greyhound silhouettes, one on each building. The black steel greyhound silhouettes hung on the buildings by the Highway from 1993 to 2018. Keith stopped hunting in 2017 at the age of 77 years. He gave some of his dogs to Adam’s son Jeff Brumbaugh, and sold some of the dogs. It was a hard thing to do, but Keith got rid of the dogs and dog boxes because of failing health. The two greyhound black silhouettes were still hanging on the buildings because they were very hard to part with. Keith tore down some of the dog pens, but still has a few of them today. We finally put the silhouettes on Buy Sell and Trade. We did not think they would sell, and that was a comfortable feeling. We put a non-negotiable price on them and if they did not sell, we were going to leave them on the buildings. They were a symbol of Keith’s life as a coyote hunter and greyhound enthusiast. We let our son, Shawn Gibson and his wife, Lynn do all the negotiations for the sell. One day they came to us and said they had a guy who was interested in the dogs. It turned out that guy was Mick Ryan and he was from t AGP in Abilene, KS. He bought the silhouettes on July 27, 2018 to display them in the Greyhound Park Clubhouse at the Track. What an honor! Keith’s wife could tell that was a sad day for Keith to see the greyhounds go. Keith’s wife went over to the buildings and re-drew the outline of the greyhounds and started early Saturday morning painting the drawings. When she was done, she went home and got Keith and took him to the buildings to look at them. He said “it looks like the greyhounds never left the place”! Keith and Karen Brumbaugh are very honored to have them hanging in the Clubhouse and Keith still has his painted greyhounds back on the buildings. If you did not know any better…..you would never know the greyhound silhouettes were ever moved. Stop by and visit the “new” Abilene Greyhound Park. All are welcome.
Kelsos Ukulele blossoms into sprint star Kelsos Ukulele showed a lot of promise after she broke in at Wheeling Island last fall – reaching Grade AA in just 15 starts.
This year, the Lester Raines Kennel greyhound has blossomed into one of the track’s top sprinters. After bouncing back and forth between Grades A-AA and one stop back in Grade B earlier this year, Kelsos Ukulele exploded in late May. In a stretch of 15 Grade AA starts through midAugust, she posted 9 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third and 2 fourths. “Ukulele really by improved this sum- Stan mer and got on a Pawloski nice roll. She’s been on her game,” Lester Raines Kennel trainer Joel Roden said. “I liked her when she broke in, but never expected her to be this good.” Her game is getting out of the box and driving to the first turn. “She’s a breaker and a rusher. She needs to hit the lid and be on or close to the lead early in her races,” Roden said. “She’s not going to come from off the pace, but she can hold her own if she gets around second or third.” Kelsos Ukulele’s nine wins this summer were by a combined 32 lengths – a 3 ½-length average margin of victory. Her biggest wins were by 7, 5 ½ (twice) and 4 ½ (twice) lengths. “Ukulele was a little short early in her career, but she’s a lot stronger this year as she’s gotten older and matured,” Roden said. “Now she’s been pulling away in the stretch against some really nice greyhounds.” Roden prefers Kelsos Ukulele draw inside posts.
“I think she breaks better from inside holes, but she has won from the outside,” Roden said. One of Kelsos Ukulele’s most impressive Grade AA races came in mid-July. The speedster broke with the pack from the two hole, knocked nearly
sideways but still was able to right herself and rocket to the lead. Coming home, she held off a fast-charging AMF Hebebuzzin. Through August, Kelsos Ukulele had 14 wins, 7 seconds, 6 thirds and 3 fourths in 42 starts this year. She was second at the track in victories – one behind leader JS Kamikazi. A February 2016 greyhound out of Kelsos Cork Man-Kelsos Jam Jar, Kelsos Ukulele opened her career at Wheeling Island in September 2017 along with littermates Kelsos Jam Tart, Kelsos Lolly and Kelsos Bisto Kid. Lashmet Gets “Payday” in St. Pete Derby ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Ken Deacon wore his blue and white Tampa Bay Lightning cap for the final program of the
2017-18 season at Derby Lane. The cap’s emblazoned logo – a lightning bolt – turned out to be the perfect precursor of how his Lashmet kennel greyhounds would perform that night. Lightning struck twice in the same place on June 30 as LK’s Payday beat kennelmate LK’s Dodge Ram by a nose for the $25,000 St. Petersburg Derby title, and LK’s Honolulu gave a career effort with an eight-length win in
the $5,000 Consolation Derby. Kennel owners John and Jill Lashmet of Fort Lupton, Colo., bred all three dogs, and LK’s Payday and LK’s Honolulu collected their first stakes crowns.

“(Finishing) 1-2 in the Derby and winning the Consolation (Derby) is unbelievable,’’ said Deacon, who took over as the Lashmet kennel managertrainer this past February. “It can’t get any better than this. My wife (Nadine, married 26 years) is here (with me) and I get to enjoy it with her.’’ Deacon, 65, a native of Rochester, N.Y., didn’t envision having such a night when the 92nd Derby kicked off. He was missing his main player, LK’s by True Retro, who Don was sidelined with Jensen a minor injury. “I just took the three best (dogs) I had,’’ Deacon said. LK’s Payday and LK’s Dodge Ram each won their two qualifying races to earn title berths, and then put on a show in the finale. With LK’s Dodge Ram battling eventual third-place finisher Rich N Famous (Farmer kennel) for the lead most of the way, LK’s Payday was tracking the duo in fifth place. Entering the stretch, she kicked in another gear and nipped LK’s Dodge Ram in a photo-finish as the 2-1 wagering favorite. It was the first Derby winner for Deacon and the kennel since Jacks Lil Bigman in 2014. “When I saw the 5 dog (LK’s Payday), I looked at Nadine and said, ‘Oh boy, here she comes,’ ’’ Deacon said. “I thought (the finish) was a dead heat.’’ LK’s Payday, a 32-month-old daughter of Barcelona Boss and LK’s Cherokee, earned $11,000 with her 14th lifetime victory from 66 starts. “She’s like Retro,’’ Deacon said. “She needed a lot of work, and if you make sure they’re healthy when they get to the track, that’s what it’s all about. I wish I could say I did something special, but . . .’’ Deacon said John Lashmet sold LK’s Payday’s brother, LK’s Toronto, for an undisclosed five-figure amount. “I told the guy (who purchased LK’s Toronto) when he left, ‘You may not have the best one (of the litter),’ ’’ Deacon said. LK’s Payday’s time of 37.49 seconds on the 660-yard course was topped by LK’s Honolulu in the 88th
Consolation Derby. LK’s Honolulu scorched her rivals in a career-best 37.18 seconds in only her ninth start at 660. It was the meet’s fourth best time. The 26-month-old female from a litter by Pat C Sabbath and LK’s Attitude took the lead on the clubhouse turn and left the other challengers battling for second with Jiminy Garnet (Cal Holland kennel) earning the runner-up honor. The fourth wagering choice at 4-1, LK’s Honolulu got $2,200 with
her seventh overall victory. “(LK’s Honolulu) was like the second or third best of the last group of pups that I got in from John,’’ Deacon said. “She’s really come along. I ran her at 5/16ths (for 18 starts), and John and I talked about throwing her to 3/8ths. She ran pretty good her first time (fourth), and second time a little better (first). I think she’s going to turn out to be a nice distance dog.’’

Pair To Be Inducted at Fall Ceremonies by Cecilia Harris
T
he Greyhound Hall of Fame will induct Pecos Cannon, an extraordinary racing greyhound who also had an
exceptional record as a sire, and Ross Lingle, a longtime greyhound breeder, trainer and industry leader, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Greyhound Hall of Fame; the ceremony will be preceded by a 6 p.m. reception for the honorees. Pecos Cannon, whelped on
May 28, 1972, was out of Annexed and Classy Babe, with ancestors including Greyhound Hall of Fame inductees Chief Havoc, Lucky Pilot, Mixed Harmony, More Taxes, Tell You Why*, and Tumblebug*. The male red brindle owned by Betty and LeRoy Creek was trained by Tony Huckfield and raced for the Don Conatser Kennel. The Rural Rube winner in 1974, Pecos Cannon was victorious in 35 of 51 races and won money 48 times, therefore not placing in only three races in his career. At age 15 months, he began racing at Mobile Greyhound Park, where he won the 1973 Puppy Derby and became the win leader even though he raced only half the season with 20 starts. With a record of 14-4-1-1 in just seven months, he was victorious over such greyhounds as Mobile Greyhound Park track record holder Montague Weapon, Miami Beach Kennel Club’s Classic winner King Jason, Pensacola Greyhound Track champion Black Flak, and Multnomah Greyhound Park’s track champion and Queen’s Crown winner P.D.Q. Trudie.
Pecos Cannon then went to Palm Beach Kennel Club where he won the 1974 Match Race Series and was the Palm Beach Champion with a record of 21-2-3-2 in 31 starts, despite being injured and missing the last three weeks of the meet. He joined an elite group of greyhounds by running the Royal Palm Course inunder 30 seconds on three different occasions. That year Pecos Cannon defeated such great racing greyhounds as All-American and Hollywoodian finalist J’s Sue, Biscayne Dog Track International winner Madison Jester, and Mile High Greyhound Park Inaugural and Derby winner M.K.’s Ted Squirt. Pecos Cannon retired early after breaking his leg on his second birthday in a schooling race. He went on to an amazing stud career, being named the Top-Grade Sire Champion in 1979 and 1981, at the time joining Tell You Why*, My Friend Lou, Caprioled and Carry On as the only greyhounds to win two sire titles since 1957. In 1981, Pecos Cannon’s 803 wins was well over the 586 points earned the previous year by

Charlie Wins Thriller What a great evening was had by all on August 4th at bestbet Jacksonville as they were witness to one of the most competitive stakes finals that we have seen in a long time. The 2018 edition of the $30,000 bestbet Sprint Classic would be in INSTANT one as the early speed stole the lead, but in the end, it was the closers that really showed just want can be accomplished when you just flat out want something more than anyone else around you. Rounding the far turn in the 11th race, RUSTY rumbled by at Joe Ross by bellowed out those Kelly lone words into the Clark still nights sky… “HERE COMES RUUSSSTTYYY!” The box sprung open with a bang and we were off in the finals of the 2018 $30,000 bestbet Sprint Classic. Coming out at the start to challenge for the front end was Pat C Kudos, WW Xavier and Kentucky Rich, they were followed closely by DC Midnite Rider and JS Ranger Rover, and bringing up the rear was Chasing Charlie, Atascocita Kitty, and the slow breaking Lee Blondie in last. Up the frontstretch they surged and WW Xavier took
command of this race. Drawing ahead of the rest, he seized control this race and was making a statement on the front end. As Rich and Kudos chased the rest of the field was just trying to make up some ground. At the first time Xavier was in easy control over the rest as the field was about to take a shuffle of positions. Kentucky Rich moved down on Pat C Kudos and cutoff her lane to run, just as DC Midnite Rider got a little midtrack and pushed out JS Range Rover to open up the rail to the trailing greyhounds. Taking full advantage of this was Chasing Charlie. Slingshoting the turn, Charlie dove inside to the rail, saved ground and made up quite a bit of room on the leaders. As they exited the turn, Xavier was still on top with Kentucky Rich chasing and Kudos and Charlie
neck and neck for third. DC Midnite Rider was next with Atascocita following on the rail just ahead of the starting to close runner Lee Blondie and the aforementioned bumped competitor JS Range Rover. Down the backside they went, and even though the lead was easy, it was going to get a bit more crowded by the far turn. The closers came to run, and it was Chasing Charlie looking like the greyhound with a rocket attached to his back. With every stride on the rail he gained ground on the leader, frankly almost everyone did, including Lee Blondie. By the far turn Xavier’s 2 length had shrunk to just one of the dueling Kentucky Rich and Chasing Charlie, and the rest of the field was still in contention as well with 6 greyhounds just 5 lengths off the leader as they approached the stretch. Turning for home, everyone in the building, and the crowd outside, all knew it was going to be one heck of a finish. Xavier Dug in deep on the lead and was giving everything, he had to try and get home a winner. Charlie breezed by Rich and set his sights on the leader as they drove toward the wire. It looked like a two-greyhound race for the win, but not so fast my friend. Super-closer Lee Blondie was not done by a long shot. Finding room on the rail, she cleared and started her patented run for the wire. Together they crept, inching closer and closer to the line as Xavier held on to the lead as he was pressed and pressed and pressed on the front end. In the final few strides it was anyone game and it was going to come down to just who wanted to win the most. Charlie gave his last push and pounced by the leader, but Lee Blondie was absolutely FLYING on the inside part of the race-
track and at the wire, it was too close to call. When the smoke cleared, and the photo was posted Charlie had out nosed his kennelmate, and rival, Lee Blondie for the win. Pacesetter WW Xavier was forced to settle for third just a half a length off the win after giving a winning effort, but sometimes your best is just not good enough. Early threat Kentucky Rich held on late to complete the superfecta at the finish line. Rounding out the field was DC Midnite Rider in 5th, Pat
C Kudos in 6th, Atascocita Kitty in 7th, and JS Ranger Rover in 8th. Congratulations head out to Trainer and Owner Mike Gerard, Lester Raines, the Lester Raines Kennel, and everyone else connected with this great athlete. Since arriving from Gulf Greyhound Park, Charlie has shown a great knack to win from on or off the early lead and has show some great raw speed with some dominate victories. It surly looks like he can run even
further and that is good news for our racing fans as the next major stakes event is the bestbet Derby which will take place over the 660-yard course. Who knows, maybe this duo with be back to battle in the finals of that one too? Good luck in the future to all of our finalists as each and every one of them has many starts ahead of them here at bestbet Jacksonville. Until next time, keep the pups racing, and I will see you at the racetrack!

Confidence boost fuels Paradox Grayson’s rebound Expectations were high when 19-monthold Paradox Grayson came to Wheeling Island early this year.
He did not disappoint. After posting a 4-length victory in his Maiden debut, Paradox Grayson captured four out of his next five starts – Grades D, C, B and A – to advance to Grade AA. In each race, the sprinter had the lead coming out of the first turn. “Tracey Wildey finished Paradox Grayson’s training on her farm in by Kansas and was Stan high on him. She Pawloski liked him a lot,” Patriot/Taplin Kennel trainer Joe Otto said. “He showed a lot of early speed in the morning once he came to Wheeling, but I was surprised he moved up to Grade AA so fast.” Maybe it was too fast. In Paradox Grayson’s first three trips in Grade AA, he finished sixth, seventh and eighth. He came nowhere near the lead in any of those races against the track’s top sprinters and dropped back to Grade A. “I think it’s best if speed greyhounds don’t climb the ladder so fast to the top grades,” Otto said. “When they don’t get the front, they are in trouble.” Paradox Grayson’s struggles continued in Grade A – a pair of fourths and a sixth as the pup dropped down to Grade B. Made the favorite in his next start, the speedster experience first turn trouble and fell to last.
“He was having trouble outrushing the top grade greyhounds to the turn and was losing sight of the lure,” Otto noted. “I think he completely lost his confidence.” In an effort to get Paradox Grayson back on track and regain his confidence, Otto gave him a few days
off in early May and then gave him a schooling race. “I asked for a one hole in schooling and he drove right to the top and never looked back,” Otto said. Mission accomplished. Paradox Grayson proceeded to capture two out of his next three starts – Grades B and A – going to the front in each outing. Even in his next venture to Grade AA, he had a third and a fourth in four starts before dropping back to Grade A. “He raced better in Grade AA the second time around,” Otto said. “He got his confidence back.” In Grade A, Paradox Grayson had two seconds and a third Patriot/Taplin Kennel sprinter Paradox Grayson found his rhythm in late summer at Wheeling Island by posting four wins and three seconds in nine Grade AA races during July-August. before winning and moving back to Grade AA in July. Since then, he’s been on a roll – posting 4 wins and 3 seconds in nine Grade AA races. “Now he’s making or getting close to the lead by the first turn in his Grade AA starts,” Otto said. “Besides confidence, I think he’s matured, gotten a little stronger and improved with more races under his belt.” Paradox Grayson isn’t lightning fast out of the box. “He usually breaks with the pack and needs a lane to rush to the first turn,” Otto said. “His rush gets him into position to win races.” Overall through August, Paradox Grayson had 12 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds and 3 fourths in 34 starts – a 67 percent mark on the pay sheet. Suncoast Kennel scores again as Atascocita Morse wins PBKC’s Puppy Stake West Palm Beach, Fl. – In a nail-biting finale, it was Suncoast Kennel’s Atascocita Morse holding off a fast-closing Open Throttle to win the twenty-first running of Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $20,000 Gallagher/Kinnaird Labor Day Puppy Stakes. As the starting box opened for the finale, it was #7 O Ya
Pawsome breaking on top, followed by a quick-rushing #4 Open Throttle, #3 Kenny Rogers and #5 O Ya By Favre. So, where was #8 Atascocita Morse? It didn’t take long for racing fans to figure out. Breaking next to last, Morse took advantage of most of the early speed going to the inside, leaving the outside totally clear for the future champion to use his amazing rushing ability. Entering the backstretch, it was
Open Throttle holding a short lead with Atascocita Morse giving chase on the outside. Passing the tote board and heading into the final turn, it was Atascocita Morse taking command with Open Throttle, Kenny Rogers, O Ya Pawsome and O Ya By Favre giving chase. At the top of the stretch, it was
Atascocita Morse ahead of Open Throttle by two lengths, and at this point, it was clear this was going to be a two-Greyhound sprint to the finish line. As the finish drew closer, Atascocita Morse’s lead was slowing dwindling. Open Throttle was closing in fast. With only a few feet of track remaining to the wire, by it was Atascocita Jeff Morse holding Prince off Open Throttle, winning by onehalf length in a 545-Yard Royal Palm Course clocking of 30.11 seconds and returning a healthy $15.40 to his very happy supporters. The National Championship Race to return in 2019… With the promise to make it “bigger and better,” United Greyhound Racing and its partners have announced the return of the
550 national championship race in 2019. In three years, the 550 national championship race by grew to become one Michael D. of the most talked Frino about and marketable race events in our sport. Its return to the greyhound racing stakes circuit has been eagerly awaited by greyhound racing enthusiasts, and its revival in 2019 should provide a welcome boost to our industry. The race format will remain the same. Eight of the country’s best greyhounds will be invited to participate in the WatchandWager Naples 550 national championship race. Two of the greyhounds will earn their invitation by winning designated autoqualifying stake races. Southland Park’s WatchandWager Kings vs Queens Challenge, as well as the WatchandWager Secretary’s Choice at Iowa Greyhound Park have both been designated as auto-qualifiers. It is also possible that another bid will go to a greyhound from the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track. The remaining five
greyhounds will be selected based on their performance in the UGR Top 25 Poll, and by recommendation of the 550 selection committee. The estimated purse for the 2019 WatchandWager Naples 550 is $45,000-$50,000. As in the previous 550 stakes, a minimum $3,000 purse is rewarded to any greyhound that participates in the race. The past winners of our national championship race have been Husker Magic (Derby Lane), Need My Moneynow (bestbet), and Oaks Maddy (Southland Park). All three greyhounds went on to earn AGTOA All-America honors. United Greyhound Racing is pleased to have WatchandWager- one of the leading online Advanced Deposit Wager services- as the new title sponsor. Their commitment to making the WatchandWager Naples 550 our sports signature eventwill be instrumental in ensuring the growth of our national
championship race. At the time of this writing, there are a lot of unknowns with regard to greyhound racing in Florida. You will be able to find Information on the weekend activities, hotel information, and the race contenders, as soon as they become available, at the United Greyhound Racing website (www.unitedgreyhoundracing. com) or Facebook page. Make your plans early, and become part of an exciting weekend where eight of the top greyhounds compete for our sport’s national championship.
IGA and Heartland Greyhound Adoption “Shine at State Fair DES MOINES – With another Iowa State Fair in the books, Heartland Greyhound Adoption and the Iowa Greyhound
Association again join forces to put the greyhounds on show. This year was a bit of a switch as the HGA worked the booth whereas in past years it was manned by IGA personnel. The Fair ran from August 9-19 and on August 8 Alan and Lori Hill of the IGA came in to set up the exhibit. Then the HGA stepped in. by “We had a nice Steve rotation of people,” Sigafoose said Jody Phelps, president of the HGA, “and we had three or four greyhounds with us at all time. We rotated the greyhounds; in all 40 greyhounds
made an appearance at the State Fair.” The hours were long. The booth was open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Besides Phelps, Jim Bombardier, Michaela Kircher, LuAnn Kircher, Liz Cleveland, Jorene King and Lori Murga put in the time. “(Over the 10 days) the Fair drew a million visitors,” said Phelps. “We were always busy. Everyone wanted to pet the greyhounds.”
The crowd was into more than just petting the greyhounds. “We answered questions,” said Phelps, “about the racing season at Dubuque (Iowa Greyhound Park) and about adoptions. We had 10 applications filled out for adoptions. After last year’s Fair, we had a lot of applications come in, so we hope that will repeat this year.” Phelps noticed “people come back to see different greyhounds when they saw that we rotated the greyhounds. We saw people who had adopted greyhounds come back just to say hi.” There were people “who had never seen a greyhound before,” said Phelps. “Everyone was so upbeat, people got to see how good the greyhounds were taken care of.” The Fair was a chance “to provide a lot of education,” said Phelps. “It is a time we look forward to doing.”

Wheeling Island suits L’s Griz just fine L’s Griz has come a long way since breaking in at Orange Park in Florida late last year.
The young sprinter came to Wheeling Island in March and by late summer had turned into one of the track’s top Grade AA greyhounds. Racing out of the Blanchard Kennel, L’s Griz was among the track’s win leaders at the end of
August and undoubtedly will be one to watch in Wheeling’s $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Stakes in by Stan October. L’s Griz caught Pawloski fire in mid-May, posting a number of impressive top grade victories this summer. In 15 Grade AA starts, the April 2016 greyhound out of KC And All-L’s Rovi had 9 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third and 3 fourths. “He’s put it all together right now – he’s confident and knows he’s good. I think he’s more relaxed too,” trainer James E. Blanchard said. “When Griz came up from Jacksonville, I thought he had the potential to be a nice Wheeling greyhound but not like this.” L’s Griz’ nine wins during his hot streak have been by a combined 50 lengths – a 5 ½-length average margin of victory. He has posted top grade wins by 12, 8 ½, 7 and 5 lengths. Still, Blanchard feels L’s Griz can get even better. “The only thing missing from his game is consistent box speed. I’d give his break a five out of 10,” Blanchard said. “If he’s able to get his break down, he’ll really be tough to beat.”
Fueling the powerhouse’s success is a “monster rush to the first turn … a 10 out of 10 rating,” Blanchard said. “Griz looks for the rail and makes really good moves sliding underneath in the first turn. He hooks the turn really well.” Blanchard prefers L’s Griz draw an

L’s Griz has been unbeatable on the front early – he extends his leads – but “can win from third or even fourth heading down the backstretch if he has the rail,” Blanchard noted. “He’s big (79 pounds) and strong. I’d give him a seven out of 10 for his finishing speed.” Several sub-30 second times dot L’s Griz resume this summer – 29.67, 29.73, 29.77 (twice), 29.82 and 29.85. “When he gets on it, it’s full steam ahead,” Blanchard said. Blanchard plans to enter L’s Griz in the $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Stakes in the fall. Photo-at-the-finish
In this month’s photo; a Wheeling trainer holds the track’s 1986 win leader. The former trainer now owns an insurance agency in the area, and the greyhound, who won 38 races at West Virginia oval in 1986, went on to finish his career with 96 victories including several stakes. Name the trainer and greyhound.
In the previous photo at the finish (p124 in the Summer Issue) the two greyhounds in question were Canadian Pacific and Prince Proper. Steve Caruso was able to correctly identify the pair and will win a copy of Paul Hartwell’s “The Road From Emeryville”.

Brother-sister act proves solid competitors Carbon copies. The racing careers of littermates Charlie Front and Ali Fast have taken similar paths.
The Lester Raines Kennel sprinters opened their careers at Wheeling Island late last year, gradually made the climb up the ladder to Grade AA and have promising futures. In 80 combined starts through August, Charlie Front and Ali Fast hit the pay sheet in 72 percent of their races. The January 2016 greyhounds out of Kiowa MythChasmo’s Joann by aren’t stars and Stan they probably won’t Pawloski ever put up big win totals, but the brother-sister act have made a believer out of Lester Raines Kennel trainer Joel Roden. “They didn’t show anything special in morning schooling, but they have steadily gotten better and better as they’ve gotten older and had more races,” Roden said. “They have been steady, solid greyhounds consistently hitting the ticket. Both of them try every time they go to the starting box.” Charlie Front broke in at Wheeling in August 2017 at 19 months old while Ali Fast hit the track a couple months later. Both sprinters bounced around between Grades C, B and A before reaching Grade AA this summer. “It has been a learning experience for them and they are still learning,” Roden noted. “Some greyhounds take a little longer to develop, so I try to be patient with them.” At the end of August, Charlie Front had 7 wins, 12 seconds, 8 thirds and 4 fourths in 41 starts – a 75 percent mark
on the pay sheet while Ali Fast had 7 wins, 6 seconds, 12 thirds and 2 fourths in 39 races – a 69 percent in the money finish.
The twosome sport similar racing styles – they both are come-frombehind-artists that greyhound fans love to watch. “Ali Fast does have a little more early foot while Charlie Front probably has more finishing speed,” Roden said. “Their best races are when they can get through the first turn clean on the inside. If so, they’ll come charging at the end.” In Charlie Front’s first seven Grade AA races, he had a pair of victories and two seconds – each with a powerful closing effort.

as there ever a pup that broke in at a major track more explosively than Molotov did at Mile High in 1996?
We’re going to stick our neck out (just a little) and respectfully assert: NO. Before leaving the Ryan Farms under the tutelage of Donny Ryan, the December 1994 son of HB’s CommanderMystic Rose sent notice of his ominous debut by breaking the track record at Abilene Greyhound Park. Then, upon arriving in Denver, he did this: First start—he appropriately captures the “Great Expectations” maiden debut. Second start—he wins by 15 lengths and sets a new track record (at a track that opened in 1949 and had featured such past superstars as Westy Whizzer and Mar Dilly—both ancestors to Molotov, by the way). Third start—he wins by 19 lengths in near-record time. Fourth start—a 15-length Grade B win while erasing the barely dried ink of his own track record, set two starts earlier. Fifth start—his first Grade A outing (where so many rookie phenoms first falter), he wins in come-frombehind fashion. Sixth start—a romping victory by 12 lengths. Sadly, just as quickly (and, oh, he was quick!) and as brightly as Molotov emerged, the fairytale ended. A careerending injury sent him home (after seven official starts) to a stud career
that three short years later saw him ascend to the top of the US Sire Standings list—a throne he defended for five straight years. He died in 2006, and a year later he was inducted into the Greyhound Hall Of Fame. Molotov remains a part of the bloodline tapestry of American greyhound racing, evidenced by his five appearances in the collective pedigrees of all four of our spotlighted honorees this issue. Don’t you think it’s interesting that in four of the five occasions, it’s through his daughters?
Chasing Charlie
Early August found this white and brindle June 2016 charger capturing the Orange Park (bestbet) Sprint Classic for the Lester Raines Kennel. Owned by Lester and his longtime trainer, Mike Gerard, Chasing Charlie is by Djays Octane-Seeking Beauty. The Molotov appearance comes in the bottom, anchor dam line of the pedigree, through his daughter Haint (out of She’s My Leader, who ranked 14th on the 1999 Dam Standings). This bitch
line goes back on the very bottom to R.L. (Tex) Block’s stock, through Contel. Her parentage (Firelite-Tyna, who was out of the outstanding producer Meridel) both go back to the same Pete’s Bubble/ Jon Louise female foundation, which is most noted for having contributed J.J. Thompson’s immortal “Jones” females (including Hall Of Fame brood matron Elsie Jones). Firelite descends from Linda Jones, a sister to Elsie, through Karla Jones. Djays Octane, 2018 US sire champ, continues to show he’s capable of producing stake stars at all tracks (especially Southland, as has been noted here in the past). His mating to Seeking Beauty repeats the oft-successful combo of Flying Penske-to-Gable Dodge blood, as Seeking Beauty’s sire, Kelso’s Fusileer, is by the Hall Of Famer Dodge. Seeking Beauty’s dam, Unbridled Time, was out of the aforementioned Haint, by TNT Star Wars, from the Fortress* cross to the Representation line. Heavy linebreeding is absent closeup behind Chasing Charlie, until you get to the distant generation icons (i.e., Tell You Why*, Mixed Harmony, etc.). Doubled up in the closer generations are HB’s Commander, Dutch Bahama, Rooster Cogburn, K’s Flak, Kunta Kinte and—the only female in the bunch— Dia’s Stormy Day. All are just off-thepage of the pedigree shown here.
FGF Chisum
Kevin Fulton owns this red July 2015 son of Bella Infrared-KF’s Memorymaker, who captured the Southland Sprint Derby on June 29, as
well as the 2017 Valley Texas Showdown, for Charter Kennel. It’s here that Molotov is doubled up—and both times it’s through a dam in the tail dam line of the respective parents. In Bella Infrared, it’s by way of Bella Vanessa and Bella Ionic, Infrared’s dam. Behind Memorymaker, it’s through Tyville Moonbeam, via Silver Cobra. Also doubled up in the pedigree is Flying Penske—something that’s fairly new in pedigrees, but was absolutely inevitable to happen. Count on seeing more of it. Penske is the very top line of Infrared, while also appearing behind the dam of Flying Coal City behind KF’s Memorymaker. Bella Infrared inarguably ranks in the upper echelon of great sprinters of the last three decades—certainly one of the very best at Southland, where Chisum is an excellent reminder of Infrared’s legendary status. Infrared’s dam line goes back to P’s Raindoll, who was a granddaughter of P’s Skelly, remembered for producing Hall Of Famer P’s Rambling and P’s Fulbright, dam of P’s Raising Cain. Skelly descends in her dam line to the classic Westy Colonel-Michigan Vickey cross. This is especially noteworthy, because KF’s Memorymaker (who, by the way, finished second for Fulton in the 2013 Southland Spring Futurity) also descends back to Michigan Vickey in her anchor dam line (only it’s with Vickey’s mating to Passed). In both of Vickey Bug’s appearances in the very bottom of Chisum’s parents, it’s exactly nine generations back. Yes—and for lots of other reasons—Michigan Vickey really should be in the Hall Of Fame. Besides the fairly close doubling up of Flying Penske and Molotov, you’ll find three entries of She’s A Natural (two of which make Kiowa Mon Manny intensely linebred… okay, let’s call it inbred), HB’s Commander and Unruly. Further back are four entries of BJ’s Justin. Even more distant you’ll find an octet of Downing entries, and an even dozen Friend Westy-Miss Gorgeous appearances. Good stuff, all.

Imark Octane
Earlier in the Southland season, on June 6, this son of Djays Octane (his second son to be spotlighted this column) took home the Southland Razorback Course Championship. The route champ also finished second in the 2017 Southland Ansel Styles Marathon. Owned by Imark Kennels and racing for the Sarras Kennel, Imark Octane is a white and black June 2015 male, out of Gogo Stitches. Here, once again, is that marriage of Penske and Gable Dodge blood, up fairly close. Penske, of course, comes through the Djays Octane top line, while Dodge is found through Lonesome Cry, who sired Gogo Stitches. Craigie Whistler is the Molotov son who produced Imark Octane’s maternal granddam Magic Vanessa (dam of Gogo Stitches). Bottom female behind Gogo Stitches (as well as Imark Octane) is Magic Lexus, who was a stake runner at Flagler years ago. She traces back to the good female Quota Gal, who was by Axe Maker and Lady Quota (out of the excellent producer, Quicken Quota). This dam line has a long history of production success, descending from the foundational dam line of Lee’s Lady* (an English import, whelped in 1922). Greyhound men and women who’ve passed on long ago would remember this line for being the root behind much of Fred Whitehead’s and the Alderson family’s stock (see Lee’s Lady* chapter, p. 8 in “Great Names in Greyhound Pedigrees,” Vol. 1). The Lee’s Lady line (through daughters Timid Flint and Hall Of Famer Kitty Dunn) is dispersed quite thoroughly far back in the American Pedigree. Tripled up in not-too-distant generations are HB’s Commander and Unruly. Doubled up, through Oshkosh Racey and Craigie Whistler, is Bill Pollard’s great producing female, Oshkosh Benefit (Oshkosh ChampOshkosh Cash).
LK’s Payday
Changing the pace from the Flying Penske top-sire line found in the aforementioned trio, let’s look at the pedigree of the St. Petersburg Derby winner (June 30) at Derby Lane, LK’s Payday, owned by Jill Lashmet and racing for the Lashmet Kennel. Payday is also the lone female among this issue’s honorees, a brindle November 2015 daughter of Barcelona Boss-LK’s Cherokee. Barcelona Boss, the former Southland star, contributes an Australian outcross in the top half of his pedigree, through Surf Lorian—a pleasant and refreshing break from the typical Penske/Dodge/Sweet Trey patterns that dominate these days. Temlee, of course, is the distant ancestor that rules here, and is found in a few other American sources (e.g., Trent Lee). Barcelona Boss goes a step further and offers an Irish speed line (Larking About*) in the sire line of his dam, Kendra. It’s in the very bottom quadrant of Barcelona Boss’s pedigree that we find the lone US contribution; it’s here we also find the Molotov contribution, through his daughter Secrets Told. The female mated to Molotov, leading eventually to The Boss, was Courtesan, whose sire Speeds The Key goes back to the Ryan family’s (yes, the same family that gave us Molotov!) great bitch line of Devious Lady and Breezy Ann (and both also found in the anchor dam line behind Molotov). Courtesan’s dam, Select Way, hails from Pat Dalton’s Irish taproot of Sand Man-Maythorn Pride, through daughter Miss Peel and her mating with Sail On II. Small wonder that Barcelona Boss is proving to be a popular outcross these days. LK’s Cherokee was by EM’s Mac Attack and Al E Shawday. Mac Attack had some nice success as a sire, offering a Fortress* sire line—thus linebreeding back to the same Dalton stock found behind Barcelona Boss. Cherokee’s bottom dam line goes back to Iona Drivin Jan, a daughter of Understood-Tiny Louise. Far back in the bottom line of this dam is Onie
Jones-Vilas Sand, the latter a daughter of Tuf Miler-Blue Bug. Thanks to the tight linebreeding of Temlee (10 entries in this pedigree), the Aussie contribution leads the intensification behind LK’s Payday, with three entries of the highly regarded Australian sire, Brother Fox, and two entries of Promises Free. HB’s Commander is also doubled up. Farther back are four appearances by Downing and eight entries of Friend Westy-Miss Gorgeous. Honorable Mention Grampa Rossy of the Copper Kettle Kennel captured the $30,000 King & Queen Stake at Dubuque in early July. He’s a brindle March 2016 son of Omar Dodger (Yahoo Omar-Aunt Mary Jane) and Lostdog Of Texas (Dodgem By Design-Rockin Robin), owned by David Ungs and Billy Galbreath. Winner of the Chris M. Chance Memorial at Southland late this summer was Alan Hill’s Superior Fugue, of the Robert Thorne Kennel. He’s a white and red-brindle November 2015 son of Boc’s Blast Off (DJays OctaneUcme By A Mile) and Superior Cinch (Lonesome Cry-USS Ceremony, who was by TNT Stars—thus a close replica of the pedigree formula that also produced Chasing Charlie, discussed earlier). Superior Fugue’s stake win marked his third straight victory at Southland. Notice the Penske/Dodge marriage again here? RT’s Bo Jangles would, of course, have been spotlighted here for his victory in the T.L. Weaver Memorial at Derby Lane late in the summer, had he not already been featured in a past column (see Winter 2018 issue of the Greyhound Review). The 2017 winleader champ at Derby Lane, Bo Jangles races for the Cal Holland Kennel and is owned by Randy Toler. He’s a fawn male, whelped April 2015, out of Kiowa Mon Manny (Flying Penske-Flying Monica K) and Penrose Karrie (Dodgem By Design-Penrose My Emily). Most obvious is that Penske/Dodge collusion, alluded to earlier and often.

“Bowl is loaded with great females in his first 5 generations. He does not have a weak link in his female lines: J’s C Penny, Beau Liz, Wise Liz, Kasco Lady, Maythorn Pride*, Karla Jones, Dutch Debit, Buzz Off, Benatar, Barstow, Butter, Position and Dia’s Stormy Day. He has speed and speed wins. Any dog that can run that many races below 30.00 at Palm Beach can fly in my book”............... Kenneth Biehle “When I walk into the kennel in the morning it is eerie as Bowl looks like a clone of Dodgem By Design. Not only looks but mannerisms and his personal traits. He says that it has been a long time since he has seen a bloodline so awesome as Bowl’s “.............. Kenneth Biehle

Southland Greyhound of the Year – 2016 Flashy Sir Award, runner-up – 2016 All-American – 2016 2015 & 2016 Winner Mid-Distance Championship at Southland Oshkosh Vani is one of our best producing females ever! Oshkosh Kid was out of a Great Litter!
Oshkosh Kid (Kiowa Mon Manny - Oshkosh Vani), owned by Larry Pollard may be the best middle distance greyhound in America. His 31 wins made him the track win champ at Southland in 2016. Along the way he picked up $100,000 Middle Distance Championship (won same race in 2015) and was a finalist in the $50,000 Razorback Classic. Racing for the Charter Kennel, he had two six race win streaks running against the best at Southland. He will no doubt be a leading candidate for the Flashy Sir award. He finished the year with a 54–31-11-6-1-record.
