Footnotes Racing Legislation Quelled.......for now In what has become an all too common challenge, legislative efforts in racing states was at the forefront again this year as greyhound racing was targeted on several fronts. In Florida, numerous bills were filed ranging from adding slots at racetracks to decoupling and beyond, while in West Virginia no real action was brought to bear. The legislative fight in Florida, at this point, appears to be over and greyhound racing has, once again, escaped any major devastation. And while, at times, our divisiveness seemed to hurt us, in the end, the FGA, their lobbying team and greyhound supporters in Florida and around the country came together to help fight off any bills that would have potentially hurt the industry. However, a Constitutional Revision Commission is still in play, weighing a proposed ballot initiative that would effectively ban wagering on greyhound racing in the state. The Commission, which meets once every 20 years, is tasked with listening to proposals from various factions wishing to place items on the voting ballot which, with a 60% voter approval, would become law. Grey2K and other anti-racing/gaming groups have pushed hard to get a proposed ban on greyhound racing to the Florida ballot. Town hall meetings have been held throughout the state where parties from both sides can express their opinions on the subject. As of this writing, there is one town hall session remaining and, so far, greyhound supporters have held their own against the general misinformation being spewed by the other side. The Commission has until May 8 to decide weather the initiative makes the ballot or not, and the hope is, obviously, it does not. Even if the Commission decides in our favor, there will be other challenges, now and down the road, and we must be vigilant and prepared at all times. On the other hand, Steve Sarras reports that things in West Virginia remained relatively quiet as no real threats made it to
the legislative debate stage. Much of the great work done last year and continuing efforts by the greyhound community have helped stave off some of the attacks and proposals we saw last session. Once again, while we seem to have avoided another battle, you can be sure there will be more to come. ****** As this issue’s cover highlights, there has been, and continues to be some very competitive and quality stakes being offered at tracks around the country. A grizzled old racing veteran told me the other day that while things seems down, “it’s good to see that tracks are still offering some sort of stake races and giving the guys an opportunity at some extra money”. Outside of the Festival of Stakes and The Great American Greyhound Futurity, there may not be as many of the big dollar stakes as there used to be, but it is good to see some decent stakes being offered, whether in house or open, to showcase our better athletes and offer the opportunity to pick up a few extra bucks. Speaking of which, we’ve received word of a $100,000 stake coming to Wheeling later this year. Let’s hope that it is a big success and becomes an annual event. Unfortunately, we may never see the days of the “traveling stake greyhound” again, but let’s take what we have and work for more. ****** The Spring meet is just about on us (April 16-21) and while the focus, as always, will be on the greyhounds, racing and the auction, make sure you check out some of the other activities. On Tuesday of meet week we will be having our Benefit Dinner and Auction for the Hall of Fame. Everyone is welcome for the event and it is for a great cause. We are still looking for donation items for the auction is you haven’t contributed already.
All is quiet, for now, but the industry cannot afford to let it’s guard down for one minute
Wednesday night we will be having our 2nd annual Cocktails and Conversation gathering, this time at the Hitching Post Saloon and Grill. Last year’s event turned out to be a ton of fun as the Trivia Contest turned into a real battle amongst greyhound aficionados. Study up and join us for this year’s contest. There is no admission charge, light hors d’oeuvres will be provided as well as a cash bar. And finally, On Thursday we will have the Hall of
Fame party and awards ceremony. This year’s event is packed with the All American presentations, Rural Rube & Flashy Sir Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award and Pioneer inductions. -- Jim Gartland

William R. “Bill” Janecek
We are sad to report that Bill Janecek has passed away. Bill died on Wednesday, January 31 after many years of illness and other complications. He was born in Dodge, Nebraska in October of 1930 to Frank and Julia (Vlach) Janecek. He graduated from Dodge High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He married his wife, Lorraine in 1954. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as well as being an auctioneer for over 40 years and served as Mayor of Dodge, for 8 years along with performing a myriad of other civic duties. Bill was a member of the NGA for nearly six decades and raised greyhounds for 35 years. He joined the National Coursing Association in 1959. He began working in the NCA paddock in the mid-1960s—soon after becoming a coursing-meet judge for the Association, and later on, the coursing-park announcer. When the Meet Track Stakes started in the early 1970s, he announced the very first race, and retained that position until his retirement after the Fall Meet in 2013. There were other unique services Bill provided the association over the past six decades. Having been the primary author of the original NGA auction rules, Bill served as its head
auctioneer for 71 of the NGA Auctions. In addition, over the years Bill has been the master-of-ceremonies for many of the semi-annual banquets during NGA Meet gatherings. Bill served as NGA president from 1974 through 1977. He also served on the Association’s Board of Directors for 12 years and was instrumental in changing the name of the NCA to the National Greyhound Association in 1973. It was during his term as NGA president that the Hall Of Fame museum was completed and dedicated. Bill was inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in 2006 and was honored with the NGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; Daughter, Gail and husband Greg Putjenter; Son, Lee and wife Cynthia Janecek; Daughter, Julie and husband Douglas Nodgaard along with numerous grandchildren and a great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill was 87 years old. Ulrich/Charter “Deposit”
another distance stakes win The Charter Kennel and trainer Stephen Ulrich have historically been successful in stakes races in the distance races, especially
in recent history. Oshkosh Kid was the most notable of the recent history books, as that All-American dominated a lot of distance races during the 2015 and 2016 seasons here at Southland Park. Ever since the “Kid” retired, the “next distance” star for Ulrich hadn’t really taken shape until the arrival of a black male named PJ Deposit Now (Djays Octane x Starz Blue Ruby). by He started his career Shane and broke his maid- Bolender en late in the summer of the 2016 racing season and it was very apparent the 583 yard course just wasn’t enough distance for his late speed acumen. At just 18 months old, he moved up to the Razorback Course (660 yards) where he instantly won his first two career starts at that distance and before the first frost hit the mid-South, he reached top grade and was modestly competitive there. He dropped down a grade (A) the decision was made to lengthen the distance even further and PJ Deposit Now was moved to the longer River Course (703 yards) where it took five starts and another drop in grade (now to B) before he notched his first victory on Southland’s official marathon course. Then came another win, then another and before long it seemed this would be his natural fit. He took a step back to the 660-yard course to compete in the 2017 Razorback Classic where he won two rounds, finished second in the other two rounds and earned a spot in the championship race.
The moment may have been too big for him at the time (he was just a couple months removed from his second birthday at the time), but that didn’t deter owners Paul Bitterman and Jay Rangel who kept him at Southland and trainer Stephen Ulrich who moved him back to the 703-yard course. He reverted back to his competitive ways before a minor injury sidelined him for about a month during the summer, but he came back strong as ever for the qualifying in the Festival of Stakes. He stayed in the Ansel Styles Marathon Division and promptly won his first two qualifying races in easy fashion, and almost had a third win (missed by a neck) and had to settle for a photo finish third place showing. He once again made the championship race but finished out of the money. Once again, though, his owners knew what they had in this greyhound, and although it wasn’t his true maximized racing style, moved him back to the course where it all began (583 yards) and entered him in the “Two For The Money Stakes”. He held his own there through four qualifying rounds, but couldn’t quite grab enough points to make the final eight in that event. Racing in the stakes at a lower distance though seemed to give him “rest while racing”
however, and once he was eliminated from that stakes event he moved back to the marathon course where he ran a close third his first start back over there. But then, racing trouble and a lackluster effort shortly followed and soon he found himself down in grade “A” again. He destroyed that lower grade field by 7 lengths as the calendar was set to turn to 2018, and boy did that one race seem to flip a switch. The new racing season seemed to birth a new and improved version of PJ Deposit Now as he would win six of his next seven races, including an eight length beatdown of his competition in late January. When the $25,000 River Course Classic was announced, it seemed natural that he would be entered into what would now be his fourth stakes race event, and he would be one of the hottest entries going in. The first qualifying race spelled trouble though, and the seventh place finish put him in a hole early on. He would need some wins, and fast, otherwise he would see his earliest elimination from a stakes race he’s seen so far in his career. He responded with two wins and second place effort over the next three rounds to earn a spot comfortably in the finals. What would be the result this time though? A year older and wiser now, PJ Deposit Now came into this championship race arguably in his prime and as “on target” as anyone in the field. His primary competition would seem to be PJ Peytonmanning (Plum Creek Kennel) who went through all four qualifying rounds undefeated, but never faced PJ Deposit Now in any of those races. That brindle male wasn’t a flash in the pan either as he just finished a 2017 campaign highlighted
with 19 victories, 11 seconds, 14 thirds and 2 fourth place finishes in 57 starts. Easi Ted (Legg Greyhound Kennel) rallied with a close second and two wins coming into the finals and drew the coveted #1 box here, which seemed to fit perfectly with his fast start, inside running style. There was plenty of early and good rushing speed present in this race for PJ Deposit Now to deal with, plus drawing the #4 box further whittled down any wiggle room. He had to be sharp, and most importantly, quick out of the gate this time. It is hard to run down a good greyhound or two in normal racing, but when you are facing seven other good greyhounds in a stakes final, it is hard to gain ground on just about anyone. The start of the race bore what wasn’t supposed to be the game plan. Easi Ted, using the #1 box along with a fast start from both #5 Final Emperor (Magic City Kennel) and #6 Final Attack (Magic City Kennel) got a quick start on the group while PJ Deposit Now was second from last in breaking from the box and third to last behind some traffic going into the very short first turn of the race. Luckily though, no serious trouble or bumping ensued allowing the field to spread out some in that first turn of the race. PJ Deposit Now was still seventh at this point, but on the inside and had some room to navigate. Easi Ted
had the slim lead and #3 Imark Octane (Steve Sarras Kennel) and Final Emperor were giving the leader chase and laid close as the group swung into the home stretch for the first time. “Swung” was an important note as nearly everyone lifted off the rail, except for PJ Deposit Now, who stayed close enough to gain valuable position that early in the race and moved up from seventh to third and gaining as the field went into the escape turn. Historically, Easi Ted has had some trouble holding on to small leads late in races at this distance and while Imark Octane was comparatively “stronger” than Ted late, was still prone to being caught by strong closers, which was just the script needed for a greyhound like PJ Deposit Now laying in his position. Down the backstretch, Easi Ted had a two length cushion over Imark Octane who was directly behind him and then PJ Deposit Now who laid just four lengths from the leader with nothing but room to work his late kick magic in. Spectra (Plum Creek Kennel) was alone in fourth and then there was a gap to the last four in the race. There was less than half the race to go, but it was apparent what was likely to happen, and sure enough, it came to be in the far turn. In that final turn, Easi Ted’s lead was down to a length. Imark Octane
was holding tough behind him but PJ Deposit Now smartly went back to the inside and closed the gap down to a length and a half and looked to be the stronger greyhound, still gaining. He overtook Imark Octane just before the final stretch run and drew even with Easi Ted who was laboring to maintain his stride. It didn’t help matters that Ted lifted a little of the inside part of the track as well, giving away some valuable real estate, but even that small error wouldn’t have changed the outcome if it didn’t happen. PJ Deposit Now drew away in that final stretch run and hit the lights stopping the clock at 40.03 seconds and winning by 2 ½ lengths. Easi Ted did hold on in a photo finish for second place, barely escaping the late kick of Spectra who settled for third. Final Attack came up for fourth, Tall Cotton (Plum Creek Kennel) finished fifth, Imark Octane faded back to sixth, PJ Peytonmanning (the favorite of the race) finished seventh and didn’t ever really threaten in the race while Final Emperor rounded out the field in eighth. Persistence paid off for PJ Deposit Now and his backers. And for that vote of confidence, he in turn “Deposited” a stakes victory, added purse money and a nice blanket to his owners and trainer. Congratulations go out to all the connections of PJ Deposit Now and trainer Stephen Ulrich for the victory.

Hall of Fame News

Three Pioneers to be Inducted by Cecilia Harris
H
is invention of a vinyl plastic racing muzzle in the 1960s has garnered Anthony Lupo a place in the Pioneer
section of the Greyhound Hall of Fame, along with two men who also had long careers in the greyhound industry, E.J. Boyle and Bob Stokes. The induction ceremony for the Pioneer section will begin
at 7 p.m. following a 6 p.m. reception on Thursday, April 19 at the Hall. The Pioneer section honors those in the racing industry in its early years as well as those who have since made significant and innovative contributions to the development, improvement, or growth of greyhound racing or the breed. According to an article published in The Greyhound Racing Record in May of 1964 and found in the Greyhound Hall of Fame archives, Anthony “Tony” Lupo created a vinyl plastic muzzle that had been accepted by more than 70 percent of the greyhound owners in the country at the time. “Its practicability and feasibility has led the Florida State Racing Commission to sanction it as ‘beneficial to greyhound racing,’” the article reads. The white, specially-designed nose piece could either be attached to a new black, vinyl plastic back or bonded to an original leather back without any stitching. It featured several important advantages over the all-leather muzzles previously used, including being more sanitary because it provided more nose space, it was water repellent, it weighed less than the leather muzzle, it couldn’t
be chewed by a greyhound pressing it against an object, it would not snag in cracks in the starting box, and it was proven to be durable. “A blanket and a muzzle are the only two pieces of equipment that a greyhound wears while performing, thus it follows that if you improve the muzzle, you improve racing,” Lupo was quoted in the magazine as saying. “Leather muzzles have been in use for the past 35 years, so it’s time somebody came up with something new and practical.” Lupo applied for a patent on his muzzle invention on Aug. 19, 1963; the patent was issued on March 16, 1965 and was believed to be the only patent registered on a greyhound racing muzzle at the time. He stated in the article that by early 1964, 22 out of 80 kennels used his muzzles exclusively. Information about Lupo and his invention was initially found in the archives by Hall of Fame Director Kathryn Lounsbury; additional research was done by Barry Baldwin and Jim Gartland. One of Lupo’s muzzles is on display in the Hall’s exhibit area. “This article is just one more reason why the archives in the Hall of
Fame are so important,” Lounsbury says. “Tony Lupo did something pioneering and needed to be recognized for his contributions.” Lupo first became involved with the greyhound industry in 1935 when his father sent two greyhounds to Revere, Mass. where Wonderland Greyhound Park opened that year. Tony continued to reside in Revere as a greyhound trainer and taxicab business owner. He became interested in inaugurating the use of a better muzzle in 1951 and moved to Hialeah, Fla. in 1954. Two years later, he began experimenting with creating the new muzzle while still continuing to train greyhounds. Another article found in the Hall’s archives reported that Lupo was, in 1957, the trainer of the L.M. Kirkpatrick kennel that was widening its lead over other kennels at Black Hills Greyhound Track with 47 wins, 45 places and 37 shows for a total of 129 times in the money. In 1962, he trained Kirkpatrick’s Miss Dilly Mar, who won the Tampa Christmas Medley at the Tampa Greyhound Park. Lupo later performed training duties for the Paul Boone Kennel at Raynham Park, with Friendly Fred capturing the Sapling State championship at the Sarasota Kennel Club in July of 1963. Also to be inducted alongside Lupo is E.J. Boyle, who was engaged in the greyhound business for more than four decades. Boyle began racing greyhounds in the early 1930s in California and also was involved in the early years of greyhound racing in Panama
in Central America. He operated his own kennel under his name for at least two decades before retiring in 1972, ending E.J. Boyle Kennel’s long association with Derby Lane in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Wonderland Greyhound Park in Revere, Mass. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the National Greyhound Association, and was a supporter of the Greyhound Hall of Fame. He died on Dec. 12, 1974. In the summer of 1963, Boyle’s greyhound named Apparent upset Rinakar, who was considered the ‘wonder dog’ at Wonderland Greyhound Park. According to Boyle’s son, Jay Boyle, Rinakar was thought to be invincible and Apparent was an 18:1 long shot; a picture shows the elder Boyle taking a victory lap with Apparent wearing a blanket of roses immediately after the upset. Besides the Wonderland Derby, Apparent also won the Countdown Stakes at Revere during that same year. For these feats, Apparent was named to the very first All-America Greyhound team in 1963. Some of Boyle’s other successful greyhounds included Janella, Bopper, Lady Mac Bee, and No Slack. Also to be inducted is Robert Stokes, who was active in the greyhound industry for more than 50 years as a breeder, farmer, kennel owner and stud master who developed superior bloodlines, all while also operating a cattle ranch in Lone Oak, Texas. Stokes used the prefix ‘Bob’s’ when naming his greyhounds, and raised winners of some of the most prestigious stake races in the country, including All-Americas Bob’s Skeet and Bob’s Tray. Bob’s Skeet was the Captain of the 2006 AllAmerica Team and was the Rural Rube award winner that same year. The Gulf Spring Shootout, Night of the Stars XVII, Texas Roundup, Gordon Wood Memorial and Au Revoir were among the greyhound’s victories that year, while also setting the Derby Lane 5/16th track record at 29.34. Bob’s Tray was on the All-
America Team in 1991, won the 1992 Wonderland Derby Consolation and came in 2nd in the 1991 Great Greyhound Race and Great Kansas Shoot-Out. In 1982, Bob’s Dash was named 2nd Team All-America after winning the 1982 Sarasota Sapling, Derby Lane Festival Stake and Biscayne Irish American. Bob’s Dash had a 45-17-16 career mark in 105 starts and was ranked 8th in the 1989 sire standings. Other outstanding greyhounds he owned or raised include Bob’s Nebraska, winner of the 1989 Wonderland Grady Sprint and named Wonderland Greyhound of the Year; Bob’s Leoti, who set a Wonderland track record of 37.90 in 1992 and the Gulf 3/8ths track record at 36.51 that same year; and Bob’s Sprad, who was the top 3/8ths greyhound at Gulf in 1993 with 23 wins and was listed on the Gulf Wall of Fame in 1995. In addition, Carry On was the top sire in the country in 1977 and 1978; on the track he was the winner of the 1971 Biscayne Derby and the 1972 Biscayne Inaugural, broke the Flagler 5/16 track record in 1971, and finished 120-53-22-11. Target had an illustrious stud career, and Bob’s Zat won the 1979 Sarasota Sapling. Stokes also bred award-winning studs such as Unruly (inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in 1988), Carry On, Target, Kingsford, Bob’s Dash, Allegis, Planet Boy*, and Bob’s Skeet.

A brief look at recent developments in racing.
Derby Lane Distance Challenge
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – It is race day for WW’s Odessabeach. As greyhounds in Patriot kennel are turned out in the morning, the 57-pound female prefers to remain next to trainer Richard Marcoux and his wife, Kami Buchanan. Later that evening before heading to weigh-in, she receives a couple of Hostess Twinkies. The dual-distance athlete then gets some final treats after her race is over. “Win, lose or draw, she gets two (more) Twinkies when she comes off the track,’’ Marcoux said. “She’s spoiled rotten.’’ Life has never been better for WW’s
Odessabeach, the daughter of Djays Octane and WW’s Gucci owned by Julia Ward of Abilene, Kan. After struggling early in her career with losses in 30 of her first 34 starts, WW’s Odessabeach has developed into the top 660-yard dog at Derby Lane. She won the St. Petersburg track’s final 2017 stakes race on Dec. 23 with a box-towire performance in the $70,000 Holiday Distance Challenge. Persistence paid off for the black female, who captured her first stakes crown one day after her third birthday. In the previous 16 months, WW’s Odesaabeach had been entered in eight stakes races. She made the finale only twice (fourth in the $18,000 1925 Historical Inaugural on Jan. 7, and eighth in the $10,000 Thanksgiving on Nov. 25 – both in 2017). Four times in those events, she advanced to the last qualifying round before being eliminated - including the 2016 Holiday Distance Challenge. WW’s Odessabeach left nothing to chance in the latest Holiday Distance Challenge. Her threelength victory over Mega Toledo of ABC Racing kennel in 37.59 seconds was her fastest time in 13 distance races since returning from a fivemonth layoff because of a leg injury. It was her 11th win in the past 12 starts on
the 660-yard course. She paid $5.60 to win as the wagering favorite. Marcoux, 46, a native of Manchester, N.H., joined Patriot in June after a stint at Sanford Orlando Kennel Club in Longwood, Fla. One move that Marcoux made was stretching WW’s Odessabeach out to 660 yards from the sprint track. The stakes title represented WW’s Odessabeach’s 14th win from 24 starts at 660. The rest of her previous racing had come at 550, where she won nine of 58 outings. The $32,000 first-place prize elevated the greyhound’s lifetime earnings to more than $48,000. Marcoux, who is at Derby Lane for the second time after working in 2000 for former kennel operator Tom La Rosa, claimed his first stakes championship at the track. Patriot kennel owner Vinny Savill and his wife, Phyllis, of Whitman, Mass., also celebrated their first Derby Lane stakes victory since T’s Hanky Panky won the $30,000 St. Petersburg Derby in 2013. “I can’t even comprehend what (the stakes title) means to me,’’ Marcoux said. “I’ve known Vinny and Phyllis since I was a kid. Vinny called me and said he needed a trainer, and he asked my wife and I if we’d come (to Derby Lane). So we closed our kennel and came. “I work seven days a week (and) I put in 16
hours a day. I haven’t had a morning off since July, and this is the reward . . . This is what it’s all for.’’ By DON JENSEN
Consignments for Hall Of Fame auction being sought
The Hall Of Fame is soliciting items for its annual fund-raising Dinner/Auction, to be held Tuesday evening, Apr. 17, at the museum as part of the NGA Spring Meet (Apr. 16-21) in Abilene. Virtually any type of contribution is acceptable, either as an auction item (regular or silent) or raffle drawing prize.
Popular consignments in the past have included greyhound art, greyhoundrelated memorabilia, gift certificates, vet and hauling services, pups, stud services, etc. Racetracks can even get in on the fun by offering an “Evening at the Track” as some have done in the past. Generally these packages include clubhouse table for 2, dinner, programs and a couple of drinks. These items have been a big hit amongst attendees. Other creative ideas are more than welcome!! Consignments can be sent to jimg@ ngagreyhounds.com or nga@ngagreyhounds.com Thanks for your consideration!!
IGP Simulcasting
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The track is empty but there is still plenty of action at the Iowa Greyhound Park. Since the early 1990s, the IGP has had a growing simulcast program. “We started out with the signals,” said Jean Hallahan, the Director
of Mutuels and the track’s Assistant General Manager, “from Gulf Greyhound Park and Bluffs Run and (horse racing’s) Triple Crown races.” From there, the IGP gradually built the program. “Of course,” said Hallahan, “the income from the simulcasts was the reason we decided to start but we had concerns over the costs of the program.” Part of the additions was “reciprocal,” said Hallahan, “we will send you our signal and you
send us yours.” Today, IGP receives races from 14 greyhound tracks and 25 horse tracks. “It all depends on what time of the year how many signals we have to offer our guests, a lot of the horse tracks have multiple meets during the year. They may run a meet from May thru June and another one during September.” The IGP season runs May to October, but the track’s simulcast program goes year round. “During our season, we operate our simulcast from Wednesday to Sunday,” said Hallahan. “In our
off-season, it is Friday to Sunday.” The hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. with Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. In 2017, the IGP’s simulcast program grew in two directions. The Clinton, Iowa, Wild Rose Casino opened with 10 signals. “Gail Simons, the Casino controller, is giving us favorable reports about their operation,” said Hallahan. A big favorite among the Wild Rose patrons are the harness racing outlets. In late April of 2017, William Hill, under the Iowa West Foundation, opened simulcast at Bluff Run. “We get a percentage,” said Hallahan. “They really enjoy the horse racing but they are also expanding their greyhound signals.” Right now, with the three sites, “it is a win-win situation,” said Hallahan, “but, down the road, we would like to expand to other casinos.” – Steve Sigafoose
Wheeling stakes schedules features $100,000
The $100,000 Mountaineer Classic highlights the 2018 stakes schedule for Wheeling Island. The racetrack’s featured stakes event is scheduled for October and is sandwiched between a pair of West Virginia
Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association championships – a juvenile and a sprint stakes. The last two years the Wheeling Island National was held in May, but the futurity-style stakes event was moved to Southland Park Gaming and Racing this year. Wheeling Island Racing Director Ben Travis is excited about this year’s Mountaineer Classic, which will be conducted on the 5/16th course. “While I loved doing the $100,000 Wheeling Island Invitational back in 2010, this year’s race will be different. Those greyhounds were invited, but this stakes race is open to any sprinter from any racetrack,” Travis noted. “I’m hoping some of the top racers in the country come in and face-off against our (Wheeling’s) best.” The winning greyhound will receive approximately 40 percent of the total stakes purse – a nice check of $42,000. Runner up is worth $18,000 with the third place finisher receiving $13,000 and fourth place getting $10,000. Fifth and sixth place will receive $5,500 each while seventh and eighth will get $3,000 apiece. Travis said greyhounds coming in from other racetracks for the Mountaineer Classic as well as Wheeling-based racers must have four official starts before the entry deadline of Wednesday, Sept. 26. Greyhounds need not have
reached a certain grade to enter the stakes event. There will be three qualifying rounds – Saturday, Oct. 6, Wednesday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 13 – before the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The championship final will be on Saturday, Oct. 20. Travis is hoping for a field of at least 48 sprinters in the Mountaineer Classic and possibly 64. by Stan Pawloski

Year in Review: Highlights from Wheeling’s 2017 racing season Another thrilling and fun-filled season of Wheeling Island greyhound racing is in the books and more is anticipated in 2018.
There were numerous highlights on the track throughout 2017, including the Wheeling Island National (Futurity), two West Virginia bred stake events and win streaks which generated plenty of fan interest. In addition, a number of youngsters hit the track running and look like future stars while a veteran racer continued to do what he loves to do at age 6. Lester Raines by Kennel’s Barts Stan O u t o f m y w a y Pawloski received first team All-America honors while A Ray Kennel’s Konomi earned a spot on the second team. Charter captured the kennel championship followed by last year’s champ Lester Raines and Patriot/Taplin. Top greyhound honors went to Charter Kennel’s KB’s Baymax with 23 victories. KB’s Baymax opened her career at Valley Race Park in Texas in November 2016 before coming to Wheeling in March 2017. In the $95,000 Wheeling Island National in late May, A Ray Kennel’s Konomi posted a 3-length victory in 29.80. Wayne Ward Kennel’s WW Jimmythe Geek and Charter Kennel’s Dont Let Me Down rounded out the trifecta ticket. Completing the final finish were BGR Dustybottoms (Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel), fourth; Superior Calder (Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel), fifth; Barts Send It (Charter
Kennel), sixth; SG’s Arnie Army
(Jacobs Racing Kennel), seventh; and Barts Im Joekool (Charter Kennel), eighth. Konomi had two victories, two seconds and a third in the five qualifying rounds of Wheeling Island’s futuritytype stake event. The stake was for greyhounds whelped (born) between July 1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2015. In the consolation final, Jacobs Racing Kennel’s SG’s Bob Uecker posted a box-to-wire 2-length victory with Brad Boeckenstedt Kennel’s Lester Raines Kennel’s Flyin Scrappydoo had five straight 3/8th victories during the 2017 racing season at Wheeling Island. He is held by trainer Joel Roden. (Photo by Stan Pawloski)

Stapleton takes both stakes titles at Naples Fort Myers Trainer Phil Stapleton may joke about being among the “senior” population, but that hasn’t stopped him from stealing the
spotlight away from the much younger trainers this year at Naples. Stapleton scored major victories for the Boeckenstedt kennel by winning the $30,000 Sprint Championship on February 3 and repeating a stakes victory in the winner’s circle of the $40,000 Naples Derby Championship four weeks later. The Sprint stakes drew much excite- by ment as the open- Vera ing field featured Rasnake 64-entries that included last year’s stakes winner Fire Blitzen from the D Q Williams kennel. Days before the stakes series began Fire Blitzen was named as one of North America’s elite eight members of the 2017 All America Team selected by the AGTOA. Although Fire Blitzen was the betting
favorite, it was BGR Cheetah (Bock’s Blast Off x Boc’s Slim N Fit) a long shot, that took charge in the backstretch and won by two-lengths at the wire in 30.58. The April 2016 male paid $33.20 to win, $17.20 to place and $10.20 to show. Cheetah’s victory was impressive for the 22-month old that will either join the Iowa roster or possibly take a shot at the big dogs and race in Arkansas. The complete order of finish in the race was #3-BGR Cheetah (Boeckenstedt), #2-CH Honey Im Good (Sarras), #1-LA’s Peter Piper (DQ Williams), #7-DS Dasher (Xtrem),
Owner Brad Boeckenstedt, Trainer, Phil Stapleton and a host of others gather to congratulate BGR Monster on his win in the Naples Derby Championship.
#8-Fire Blitzen (DQ Williams), #4-O Ya Rocket (Superior), #5-Oshkosh Fired Up (Charter), #6-BS Harsh (Sarras). Just four weeks later, Stapleton showed he could go the distance with stakes winner BGR Monster capturing the $40,000 Derby over the 660-yard course. Again DQ Williams kennel’s Fire Blitzen drew attention as he won this stakes last year. The blue dualdistance male had his work cut out for him this time, however. There were four elimination rounds that produced the top eight that saw Boeckenstedt entries snatch up two slots for the stakes final. And to sweeten the deal they drew the two coveted stakes posts. BGR Abracadabra drew the rail post and BGR Monster would cover the outside from post eight. The Consolation stakes was first in race eight of the Saturday night features. It was Charter kennel’s Worry Free that scored the win for trainer Blane Armstrong. Worry Free powered his way at the finish winning by a halflength in 38.56. The July 2015 son of DJays Octane and Blind Ambition won the first stakes of this meet for Charter. All eyes were on race ten. Fire Blitzen-always a fan favorite, was the betting favorite for trainer Claudia Quintero. When the box opened it was Blitzen that was blazing a winning trail, but Bockenstedt’s monster charged and finished first in 38.58. Blitzen was squeezed out by Charter’s Papertown, who was an impressive runner-up. BGR Monster was the youngest in the field. The 20-month old son of Boc’s Tony Romo and Boc’s Jenny Finch stole the show from the same eight post that he took top points from in round one.

Robinette Has Come A Long Way It all started with a quarter. “I was about eight years old,” said David Robinette, “I lived close to Yuma, Az. I
used to slip off to watch the greyhounds. My friend’s Dad (Don Hutchinson) ran greyhounds at Yuma. At one point, I was allowed to come in and they gave me the job of walking the greyhounds for 25 cents a greyhound. That started a career in the field that now includes breeding, having a kennel at Southland and holding the office of Vice-President of by the Iowa Greyhound Steve Sigafoose Association. “By the time I was 12,” remembered Robinette, “I was making more money walking and running greyhounds to the starting box. It caught my Dad’s (Ed) eye, who was working at Safeway at the time. He decided to become a trainer and worked at Pueblo, Colo. and Yuma. By the time Robinette was 18, “I was a trainer, working that in with finishing high school. The school worked with me, I would take care of the greyhounds in the early morning, go to school from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; then I was back at the track until the early morning. “I was a trainer for Clifford Robins for a couple of years.” By the early 1980s, Robinette was working the circuit between Colorado and Sodrack. He struck gold at Sodrack. “I meet my wife, Mary, at Sodrack in 1980,” said Robinette. The couple are proud parents of five children (Brittany, Logan, Wyatt, Serena and Jeremia).
Training for Robinette became a road show. “We worked in Florida, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Arkansas and West Virginia,” said Robinette. But Mary missed home and that was fine with Robinette. “Moving to Iowa in 1998,” said Robinette, “was one of the best decisions that I made. It is truly Home and Iowa has been wonderful to us.” It was also time to get out on his own in the business.
“I joined up with Mark and Tom Phelan,” said Robinette, “and Rick Green. We got a booking at Waterloo as the Morning Kennel. Now it is I, Mark and John Phelan as the Plum Creek Kennel at Southland.” With all those years in the business, some greyhounds have stood out. “To talk about our greyhounds could become quite a list,” said Robinette. “We’ve had some very nice greyhounds.” He remembered JW Rocket One, a two-time Rural Rube winner; Shiver Me Timber, KC Ironclad and KC Bobbywillwin; Flashy Sir winner Show on the Road and Oswald Cobblepot, who sired as many stakes greyhounds as anyone,. Becoming a kennel owner has “kept us settled,” said Robinette, “our family has lived in Iowa since 1998. We like it.” It was about that time that Robinette got involved with the Iowa Greyhound Association.
From left, Logan, Serena, David, Mary, Jeremia, Brittany and Wyatt.
Taxes and Finances New rules for taxing passthrough income by Mark Battersby
P
ass-through business entities, greyhound activities and other businesses operating as partnerships, limited liability
companies (LLCs), S corporations and sole proprietorships, have long been extremely popular. In fact, one form of pass-through business entity, S corporations are currently the most-used business entity with Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), the pass-through entities most frequently chosen today. Unfortunately, thanks to the recently enacted “reforms” under December’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), many greyhound owners, breeders and other businessses operating as pass-through entities will face top personal tax rates as high as 29.6-percent -– far above the new 21-percent corporate tax rate. Little wonder that many have begun considering switching to the basic, ‘C’ corporation for their greyhound operations.
Passing through businesses
In addition to profits being taxed only once, not at the business level but, rather only when passed onto the owner’s tax returns, many greyhound owners choose to operate as so-called “pass-through” business entities because of the protection from personal liability. As mentioned, under the just passed TCJA, the tax rate for incorporated businesses will be reduced from the former 35-percent rate to 21-percent -– for the 2018 tax year and thereafter. Unlike the TCJA’s temporary provisions for individuals that
largely expire in 2026, the business tax cuts are, for the most part, permanent.
Pass-throughs
An incorporated business electing to operate as an S corporation or greyhound operations whose owners have chosen another form of pass-through entity, has its business income taxed only once, similar to the manner in which a sole proprietor is taxed. By electing to operate as a pass-through entity, an owner can benefit from the legal advantages available to businesses with a corporate structure as well as the tax advantages available to a sole proprietorship. One of the best features of a passthrough entity such as an S corporation was the tax savings for both the operation and its shareholders. While “members” of an LLC are subject to employment tax on the entire net income of the business, only the wages of the S corporation shareholder who is an employee are subject to employment tax. The remaining income is paid to the owner as a “distribution,” which is taxed at a lower rate, if at all. An S corporation designation
allows a greyhound operation to have an independent life, separate from its shareholders. If a shareholder leaves the operation, or sells his or her shares, the S corporation can continue doing business relatively undisturbed. Similar rules now also apply to partnerships. Maintaining the business as a distinct, separate entity defines clear lines between the shareholders and the business that improve liability protection for the shareholders. A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is, on the other hand, a business structure that combines the passthrough taxation of a partnership or sole proprietorship with the limited liability of a corporation. As is the case with greyhound owners in partnerships or sole proprietorships, LLC “members” report business profits or losses on their personal income tax returns; the LLC itself is not a separate taxable entity.
Other partnership taxes
As a general rule, the losses from a pass-through entity cannot be claimed by the shareholder or partner in excess of the amount they have invested, their “basis.” And, not too surprisingly, there are several tax issues passthrough businesses must consider. Partners, for example, are considered to be self-employed, not employees, and required to file a Schedule SE with their Form 1040 and pay self-employment taxes. Because of this self-employed status, each partner is also responsible for paying his or her share of Social Security taxes and Medicare. Partners are responsible for paying
double of what a normal employee would pay (because employers normally match employees’ contributions). Of course, the partners’ tax burden is reduced by an allowance for one-half of the self-employment tax that can be deducted from taxable income. While pass-through entities are generally not subject to federal income tax, they may be liable for and required to make estimated tax payments based on entity-level taxes such as gain built-in from an entity change, so-called “BIG” taxes, LIFO recapture, a tax on passive income, voluntary and involuntary terminations, as well as a tax on earnings’ accumulated rather than paid out.
TCJA pass-through businesses
The TCJA created a 20-percent deduction that applies to the first $315,000 of income (half that for single taxpayers) earned by businesses operating as S corporations, partnerships, LLCs and sole proprietorships. All businesses under the income thresholds can take advantage of the 20-percent deduction. However, the TCJA places limits on who can qualify for the pass-through deduction with strong safeguards to ensure that so-called “wage income” does not receive the lower marginal tax rates for business income. For passthrough income above the threshold, the new law also provides a deduction for up to 20-percent -- but only for “business profits.” In other words, that 20-percent deduction from pass-through income applies only to business income that has been reduced by the amount of “reasonable compensation” paid the owner. That so-called “reasonable” compensation for greyhound owners, breeders, trainers, kennel operators or other passthrough business owners, has not been defined by our lawmakers as yet. On the downside, those operating as a pass-through business lose things like fringe benef its, plus being required to pay thenmselves “reasonable” compensation and deal with the other restrictions. And, then, there is the elimination of a number of item-
ized, personal deductions. Currently, the vast majority of passthrough business owners can no longer deduct state and local income taxes and are permitted to write off only $10,000 of their property taxes. A regular ‘C’ corporation faces no similar deduction restrictions.
Switching to corporate form
In the eyes of many experts, there is no longer a reason to operate a profitable greyound operation or business as a pass-through entity. However, converting from a pass-through entity to a regular ‘C’ corporation can be a complicated process requiring quite a few adjustments. Going the other way, a sale of assets by an S corporation that was formerly a ‘C’ corporation during the “recognition period” is subject to the already mentioned BIG or built-in-gains tax. The BIG tax is imposed on the incorporated business at the highest corporate tax rate, based on the appreciation in asset value that existed on the date the corporation became an S corporation. The shareholders may then be subject to a second tax on distribution of the sale proceeds. This “double tax” created by imposition of the built-in gain rules can be eliminated if the corporation holds and sells assets only AFTER the 10-year recognition period has expired. Naturally, the longer the recognition period is, the tougher that is to do. Under the former rules, distributions made by a S corporation converting to a regular ‘C’ corporation during the posttermination transition period (PTTP), can be tax-free to the shareholders. Distributed funds from those accumulated adjustment accounts can also reduce the adjusted basis of the stock. Under the new TCJA rules, adjustment of a terminated S corporation (even if only changing accounting methods) is taken into account ratably during a six-year period beginning with the year of change.
Decisions, decisions
The annual tax return provides an
opportunity to re-consider the options available to some greyhound operations and businesses. Entities with more than one shareholder or member can elect corporate status on their annual tax returns. Thus, an entity that is a partnership under state laws may elect to be taxed as a ‘C’ corporation, or S corporation, for federal taxes by using Form 8832 (Entity Classification Election). Unfortunately, under those so-called “check-the-box” regulations entities formed under a state’s corporate laws are automatically classified corporations and may not elect to be treated as any other type of entity.
Changing business entities
Changing circumstances, revisions of the tax laws and even the success of the greyhound operation or business might prompt a reassessment of the entity used. And, best of all, the annual tax return is not the only option when selecting the entity that makes the most economic sense. Although many of the tax law’s provisions apply to all business entities, there are some areas of the law that specifically target each entity. Choosing among the various entities can result in significant differences in federal income tax treatment. However, there is also more to choosing the right structure for a greyhound operation or business than taxes. Not only will the decision to change the greyhound operation’s business entity have an impact on how much is paid in taxes, it will also affect the amount of paperwork required for the business, the personal liability faced by the principals and, especially important in today’s economy, the operation’s ability to raise money. To switch or not to switch? If earlier tax law changes are any indication, the IRS should issue guidelines to help switch entities without a penalty. Since every situation is different, the best approach might be to choose the entity for your greyhound operation based on the current tax law. To help in this decision-making process, professional advice is strongly recommended.
Barts Big Bang goes box-to-wire in PBKC’s $50,000 James W. Paul Derby! West Palm Beach, Fl. – In one of the most exciting finishes in a Palm Beach Kennel Club stake race, James Douglas Kennel’s
Barts Big Bang held off Rader Racing Kennel’s PJ Whattheywant to win the 87th running of Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby. As the starting box opened for the finale, it was Barts Big Bang jumping to the early lead, followed by JS Mane Event, PJ Whattheywant, Bartsrunninloose and Popgun Episode. As the finalists straight- by ened out for the Jeff run down the front Prince stretch, it was “Stu” maintaining a onelength lead over Mane Event and the strong finisher Whattheywant. Entering the backstretch, it was still “Triple B” in command, but with the big finishers in the race starting to make their move. In the sprint for the wire, it was down to Barts Big Bang and the quickly closing PJ Whattheywant. “My heart was pounding” said a still stunned, but happy, trainer Justin Douglas. As the two finalists hit the finish line, it was Big Bang holding off Whattheywant by one-half length to win the Douglas Kennel their first $50,000 James W. Paul Derby championship. “I owe it all to my dad”, reflected the younger Douglas. “He told me what to do and I did it. It obviously worked out. I’m very proud of my dad and my entire family.” Popgun Episode and Atascocita Carey finished third and fourth, respectively. Barts Big Bang collected a cool
$25,000 for his 37-seconds run of fun in the south Florida sun and returned $5.40 to his many, many supporters. The complete 2018 $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby order of finish: 1st – 3. Barts Big Bang (Pat C Clement – Barts Magpie, James Douglas) 2nd – 6. PJ Whattheywant (Djays

Front speed fuels Wayne Ward Kennel pups It’s no secret, Wheeling Island and speed greyhounds go hand in hand. While the racetrack does have its share of greyhounds with closing power, most of the successful sprinters at Wheeling Island are fueled by their front speed to the first turn.
Five greyhounds breaking in for the Wayne Ward Kennel last fall – WW Fanfare, WW Wisdom Wit, WW Offthe Record, WW Alfonso and WW Ramiero – have used their quick starts to gradually climb the lad- by der to Grade AA. Stan This year, the group Pawloski has combined for 17 wins, 9 seconds, 6 thirds and 8 fourths in 60 races – a 67 percent mark on the pay sheet. “I am pleased with the way all of them have developed early in their careers. I couldn’t ask for much more,” Wayne Ward Kennel trainer Ron Otto said. “For any speedball to be successful, they need to break sharp and be on the front or near the lead early in the race.” WW Fanfare, an October 2015 greyhound out of AMF Ex PresidentWKL Tiger Lily, took her time moving up the ladder – gaining valuable experience along the way. She had a total of 26 starts in Maiden, Grades C, B and A before reaching Grade AA. In her first eight starts in Grade AA, WW Fanfare has 2 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds and 1 fourth. “She has really surprised me in her Grade AA races. This is the best she’s raced in her career,” Otto said. “I thought she’d be a solid Grade A-AA,
but more of a Grade A winner.” Otto said WW Fanfare prefers an outside box and needs to get around the first turn in the top three of four. She does possess some closing speed. In 34 Wheeling starts, WW Fanfare has 9 wins, 6 seconds, 2 thirds and 3
fourths. WW Wisdom Wit, a March 2016 greyhound out of Pat C ClementWW’s Ignite Fire, was only 18 months old when he broke in last September. He had 11 Maiden trips and another seven starts in Grade D. “Wisdom Wit was very young when he started and some pups take longer to figure it out. He definitely took his time,” Otto said. “This year he’s been a different greyhound – breaking more consistently.” In a month-stretch from mid-January to mid-February, the rail-running WW Wisdom Wit won five out of seven starts – Grades D, C, B, A and AA – all with closing efforts in the stretch. He was second and third in the
Wayne Ward Kennel pups WW Alfonso, left, held by Jimmy Jordan, and WW Wisdom Wit, with Chuck DiGiovanni, have climbed the ladder to Grade AA early in their sprint careers at Wheeling Island. (Photo by Stan Pawloski)
other two outings. “He pops the box like crazy, but then he’ll get outrushed to the first turn by the big early speed,” Otto related. “He still can come back and win if he’s racing just off the leaders.” In 27 career races, WW Wisdom Wit has 6 wins, 4 seconds, 3 thirds and 4 fourths. WW Offthe Record, a March 2016 greyhound out of KC And All-WW’s Inittowinit, is the most experienced of the group with 40 career starts through mid-March. She has 8 wins, 8 seconds, 4 thirds and 6 fourths. “She’s a speedball and has to be on the lead to run well,” Otto said. “Post position doesn’t matter to her. She can
go to the front from any hole.” WW Offthe Record had a hot streak late last year when she was firing to the front in nearly every race. In an eightrace streak, she had 3 wins (Grades B, A and AA), 3 seconds and 1 third. Littermates WW Alfonso and WW Ramiero, May 2016 greyhounds out of Barcelona Boss-WW’s Hershey, are carbon copies – want and need the front. “Their racing styles are made for Wheeling – dead rail and speed to the turn. Each can be a little short in the stretch,” Otto said. “If they get stronger, they can turn into really nice Wheeling greyhounds with their early speed. Time will tell.” WW Alfonso has a Grade AA win

on his resume while WW Ramiero has a trio of seconds against top grade competition. Overall, WW Alfonso has 9 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds and 2 fourths in 28 career races while WW Ramiero has 6 wins, 8 seconds, 1 third and 1 fourth in 24 lifetime starts. “All five have really helped out our kennel,” Otto said. “The track usually gets a little faster in the spring and summer which should benefit their style even more.” WW Fanfare, WW Wisdom Wit and WW Ramiero are owned by Jaws Racing while WW Alfonso is owned by David Cahill and WW Offthe Record by William McCarthy.
Derby Lane Historic Inaugural ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – When Raymond Thurber named a pup in honor of topflight thoroughbred jockey John Velazquez, the late greyhound breeder didn’t go wrong. John Valazquez, the greyhound, is also a champion after his win in Derby Lane’s oldest stakes race, the 93rd edition of the $18,000 1925 Historical Inaugural Jan. 6. “This is Ray’s first stakes winner since he passed away (Sept. 11 with undisclosed causes at age 74),’’ Capabal kennel owner Henry Parker said. “It’s by super. . . . This dog Don has been really carry- Jensen ing the kennel.’’ John Valazquez, named after the two-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey and 2012 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame inductee with more than 5,800 victories, now races under the ownership of Kathleen Thurber of Vernon, Fla. She is the widow of Raymond Thurber. Parker’s previous stakes winner, Caitlyn Stoodard ($5,000 St. Petersburg Consolation Derby June 30), also was owned by the Thurbers and is named in honor of another thoroughbred rider, Caitlyn Stoddard. Parker, 62, met Thurber four decades ago at Hinsdale Greyhound Park in New Hampshire. He bred and raced greyhounds before sending them to Parker. “(Thurber) always ran his own dogs for years, but the only persons he would ever give his dogs to were me and Henry,’’ Capabal trainer Belinda Parker said. “I’ve known
him for years since I was a kid at 18.’’ If any dog was capable of knocking off 2017 national win leader RT’s Bo Jangles of Cal Holland kennel in the Inaugural, John Valazquez was no surprise. He entered the 550-yard finale
with white-hot form, cashing in the money in 22 of his past 23 starts with top-four finishes. The streak included 13 wins and seven seconds. John Valazquez left his seven rivals in the dust. The 3-year-old son of Dragon Fire and Awesome Fling broke sharply from the No. 4 box, sped to a two-length lead 50 yards from the starting box, and defeated RT’s Bo Jangles by that margin in 30.35 seconds for his first stakes title. He paid $14.40 to win as the third wagering choice. RT’s Bo Jangles, the prohibitive 2-5 favorite, was seeking his third stakes crown and 46th win in the past 13 months.

ed on the following workday.
“I just haven’t had the best luck in stakes races the last year,’’ Henry Parker said. “I was expecting a good race (from John Valazquez). The last eight races (four wins, four seconds), he’s just ripped off.’’ The $7,700 first-place prize elevated John Valazquez’s career earnings to more than $28,000. The 76-pound speedster had a fine 2017 season with 28 victories, two stakes-final appearances (third in the $10,000 Thanksgiving and seventh in the $20,000 Remembrance), and the fastest 550 clocking in the January-to-June meet at 30.13 seconds. He also ranked at least seventh in the previous two meet win standings, including a second-place tie with kennelmate Brian Ernst in the July-toDecember campaign. Cheer up. Things could be worse. Mark Twain put it this way: “The news of my death is somewhat premature.” Or something like that.
You have all heard the one about when the voice out of the blue says to a depressed guy, “Cheer up! Things could be worse!” So the guy cheers up, and sure enough, things got worse. May I say the last issue of The Greyhound Review was top cabin. In particular, the opening essay about WWW. Right on. Bingo. Get that by writer a cigar. A + Bob absolutely. Keep McKinnon it up. Would you believe that coincidentally on this very subject, more or less. I ran into an old “The Far Turn” crony. Read on. Incidentally, just one small detail, surrounded by such intellect, I insist on capitalizing Greyhound. Big G. Not little g. Yes, I taught high school English for 31 ½ years. Greyhound is a proper noun. You want to tell me Greyhounds are common? What I am leading up to here, and I have done so as a few readers may go into shock. Fleas Finnegan is not dead. Just a few days ago, I ran into none other this famous dog man and my buddy a la mode. Yessir! The old reprobate himself! Hard to believe. I had not heard from Fleas in such a long time I was afraid, well, you know, maybe he was taking a coffee break from the planet. Turns out, all this time he was into deep research projects in Dr. Duncan McSwine’s basement laboratory in Coeur D’ Alene, as reported
years ago in The Greyhound Review, mostly about various cloning projects … anyway … at the Minneapolis Metropolitan Airport, I was stepping off the bus, bus-step by bus-step, having arrived from across town from the St. Paul Amtrak Station. My suitcase with wheels went bump, bump, bump, like that, and I turned to hump it, hump it, sucker was stuck, not bump it, BUMP IT, finally, up the curb, airborne, onto the sidewalk, gently now, when I hear a voice: “Give an old friend a hand?” “Fleas!” “Maddog!” “Fleas Finnegan!!!!”
“Maddog McDermutt!!!!” “You old pariah!” “You old reprobate!” “Good golly, Fleas,” I said, dropping my suitcase handle and giving my old friend and contemporary dog trainer a big hug. “I haven’t seen you in ages. How in blazes are you? Still doing research in Dr. McSwine’s basement in Coeur d’ Alene? You look great!” “Good to see you, Maddog,” Fleas says. He eyes my VOTE REPUBLICAN button on the chest of my pink jump suit. I grin, turn it over. Now it reads VOTE DEMOCRAT. He nods, grins. Few people know Fleas is the only human being on the planet to notice my button has three sides. VOTE INDEPENDENT. He has accused me of it from time to time, but he couldn’t prove it. I wouldn’t let him touch it. Not then. Not now. At this moment, somewhat anticlimactic, but not totally, my bag with wheels on it had rolled into the gutter and the smashing, squashing, crushing wheels of the bus, made my teeth itch; we now stared, in a nasty cloud of bus Maddog and his dog sled, standing by.
fumes, with gigantic frowns, squinted eyes and puffed jowls at what looked like a rather large pancake. Fleas was the first to break the silence. “Pity,” he said. “Downright pity.” “Are you trying to be humorous, Fleas? Are you making light of my suitcase?” He was trying hard not to laugh. He puffed up, held his breath. His red face and watering eyes stared off into the distance. “Travel much?” he says. Then he coughs, gargles, spits. Some people never change. I had some rather valuable items in the suitcase with wheels. I saw no sense in picking it up, there was nothing to pick up. A cab arrived, curbside, the front tire ran over it, then the back tire. A police car did the same thing. Squish. Squash. I sighed. Shrugged. “Se la vie.” I turned my button back to VOTE REPUBLICAN. You know that feeling you get when you think you’ve left something somewhere. “Minneapolis International Airport is a busy place,” Fleas observed, looking here, there, trying to blink intellectually. Some things never change.
Fleas put his arm around me as we headed for the terminal. “You old pariah,” he muttered. “Curmudgeon!” I snapped back. “What happened to reprobate?” “That too,” I said. We moved through the turnstile doors and headed for the nearest bar, not that we needed a drink, well that’s not true, speaking for myself, I needed one, a big one. We just needed to sit down and have at it, it’d been a long time. “Oh all right,” I said. “Beer please,” I said to the guy on the other side of the bar. “Make that two!” Fleas said. He elbowed me. “I miss the dogs.” “Yeah,” I said. “Me too.” I elbowed him back. “Greyhound folks took a real hit.” “They did indeed,” I said. “A huge hit.” “How’s Little Elsie?” Fleas asked. “Fine,” I said. “She’s holding down the fort in Montana.” I sipped my beer. “Remember when it all started in Emeryville?” “No. And neither do you. We’re not that old.” “You wrote a story about the old gang in Emeryville.” “Yes. Well sort of. They call it lit-

erary license. The point of view was correct within the narrative, Fleas. As I remember the main character was an ostrich.” “Legs Diamond,” Fleas said. “Fastest critter on the planet. Great story, Maddog, you outdid yourself.” “Emeryville was the start of it, Fleas, the lure, the rail, the quarter mile track, starting boxes. And if you felt like it you could walk a hundred yards and go soak your head in San Francisco Bay.” “Maddog, you never change.” “Oh yes I do. And so do you. Time marches on and we change. Dog racing changed. Why? Because it didn’t change. It stood its ground, by golly. And changed.” Fleas nodded. He had no idea what I just said; I paused, then started in …. “Same old same old. Day in and day out. The tracks considered the animal rights extremists a bunch of pests, which they were, very effective nasty pests, and so the tracks dismissed the general public and went with the professional gamblers.” “Mistake,” Fleas said. “Those gambler guys would bet on anything and when push comes to shove go inevitable.” “You mean invisible?” “Yeah. That too.” “Somewhere along the way, the tracks presented betting schemes Einstein would have trouble with.” “Very true,” Fleas said. “Another mistake.” “The big one, the really big one, Fleas, the industry dusted radio, television, newspapers, magazines.” “Public relations,” Fleas said. “Gotta have public relations. Could I have another beer here?” I held up my hand, two fingers. It appeared I was buying. My plane was not due to board for another hour. “Fleas, I remember Multnomah Stadium in downtown Portland, in the forties, when the Beavers baseball season was over the dogs took over the stadium and they packed the place. I was about ten then. When Fawn Warrior ran Multnomah, that dog came to run,
you couldn’t get in the place. It was on the radio. It was in the newspapers before and after the races. The dog was a sensation. A hero. An athlete. A star. Everybody who was anybody knew who Fawn Warrior was.” “Every track has stars,” Fleas said. “Name one,” I said, but two beers arrived. I kept it going. “Fleas, what’s your take on the tracks running all year long?” “Boring,” Fleas said. “Day in, day out, everybody got bored. The dogs got bored! And as you are so often wont to say, Maddog, It’s the dog, Stupid. A whole lot of guys at the time said a year-long season was a big mistake.” “Pass the peanuts,” I said. “Please?” “Please.” We sat there for a few minutes, sipping our beers. The peanuts were very salty, very good. Finally, Fleas says, “So how do we get it back?” “Syndicates, Fleas,” I said. “Syndicates. All over the place. Little Elsie and I noticed in England, Fleas, at the old Walthamstow Stadium, table-to-table and wall-to-wall syndicates, maybe six individuals who work together, they purchase a Greyhound, have it trained, and now that Greyhound, there it is, under the lights, on parade to the starting boxes. When that dog goes around, the syndicate comes to life, they stand on the chairs, jump up and down, yell and carry on. They are involved. And as a plus, Fleas, when that Greyhound retires, somebody in the syndicate you know is going to adopt. If that’s not possible, they’ll see to it, somehow. Because they care. It’s not a business to them. Perfect. Syndicates are winwin.” “It isn’t like I’ve not heard all this before, Madddog. Pass the peanuts.” I stared at him. “Please,” he says. I pushed the peanuts his way. I continued, said, “In-home betting, Fleas. Consider all the gadgets out there, gadgets that do everything and anything. On our visits to New Zealand, England, and Australia, I
suspected little interest from the general public. Wrong. A huge betting public was alive and well, at home, in the kitchen, in the living room, in the bathroom, mowing the lawn, betting dogs. The owners and trainers showed up at the track. However don’t close down the restaurants and families. In Australia the track supported a child care room full of games and stuff for kids while the parents bet the dogs. At a second Australian dog track, a straight track, no stadium, there were tables where kids paid little attention to the dogs; they were all playing poker, kind of a picnic atmosphere. In-home betting, Fleas, you could bet on Irish dogs. Racing in Ireland. Maybe not. Additionally, think about it, the same signal can go all over the world. When Little Elsie and I were in Hinsdale, we watched a race that was piped to
England, then over to China, and back again. We watched it on television. The real race beat the transmission by about twenty lengths. Today, Fleas, we have technology the delay would be hardly noticeable.” The airport’s public address system blared: all flights to Montana have been canceled because of unseasonal high winds and blizzard conditions. Please see the nearest ticket counter. “Wonderful,” I muttered. Fleas glanced at his wristwatch. “I should be moseying on over to my flight bordering door.” This beer was pretty good. “Consider tracks, Fleas. How about a pitch and putt golf course on the infield? Or a soccer field for the school district, grades 1-12. Track meets. The possibility goes on. I recall Tucson promoting prize fights from time to time.”
Little Elsie and Maddog’s New Zealand South Island host Kristine Ramsey and Mick, on a daily run on an extremely long training track. The dog specialized in distance races.
“Look what happened to Tucson.” “Fleas had a point.” “I saw a dachshund race in Phoenix. Kind of a fizzle, I thought.” As you know, Fleas, I do swim lessons in the summer. Our dog Jones made himself the parking attendant, greeted everybody as they came and escorted them to their cars. When Jones passed, and the next swim season came along, everybody, “Where’s Jones?” Not “Hey Maddog, another season, ey?” Or, “How’s it going Maddog?” And so on. It was always, “Where’s Jones?” What I am saying, Fleas, IT’S THE DOG, STUPID! The exhibition of Dachshunds was a sham, Fleas, at it’s conclusion, the cheering Dachshunds fans did not stay to watch the Greyhounds race, a set up deal devised to embarrass. I remember sitting next to Dick Moran, years ago, at Multnomah with his pet dog, the retired superstar of the race track, the famous Multnomah super star everybody came by to say Hi and pet. Dick years ago predicted dog racing in the United States was heading for a six track future. And what in the mix was the biggest offender? Track compound kenneling. When the do-gooders started taking pictures of dog track kennels … that was the beginning of the end. Fleas, the perfect devil’s advocate, says, “I have heard the argument the dogs enjoy kenneling.” “Idiot!” Was I shouting? “Fleas, you can’t defend it! YOU CAN’T DEFEND TRACK COMPOUND KENNELING!!! Kenneling resembles a jail sentence. So get rid of it. Or it will get rid of you. Quit trying to rationalize it, get rid of it. “I’m gonna miss my plane, Maddog. You’re going to be here all night. I have a plane to catch.” “You want to make basketball interesting, Fleas, put the basket on the floor, see what happens. Dog racing lacks variety. Distances. Sexes. Ages. Does the average fan, whatever that is, see much difference between a grade C 5-16ths and a grade D 5-16ths? And here they come, one after the other, maybe 12 of them on a program, with
the variety being a couple of 3/8ths races. In my state, unless they changed it over the years, pari-mutual betting is legal for thirty days, per county. We (Montana) have over fifty counties. We have fairgrounds, most all of them have county fairs and horse tracks of some sort, quarter horse and, thoroughbreds. The horses move in a few weeks ahead of opening day, the season is lucky if it’s a week. Maybe ten days, You could probably run a dog program twice. Maybe thrice. But … if there are fifty fairs, all with tracks, going on, you could keep busy all summer long. You don’t have to be part of the fair, run the dogs after the fair closes, just use the facilities. I first saw this, Fleas, in New Zealand. New Zealand is two islands. The dog folks had to ride a ferry for hours to go island to island to race their dogs. Now that, Fleas, is dedication and a love of dog racing? Furthermore they shared their dog track with a race track and a harness track. Three tracks and one grandstand. Tijuana used to run both horses and dogs, maybe they still do. “So wrap your mind around this one, Fleas. In New Zealand, our host had one dog. Mick. He said that one dog, Mick in a year’s time, would probably make $30,000. For lack of a better word. ?????? Fleas was thinking. ?????? “One dog, thirty grand? Was the dog a hurdler? I saw hurdles in England once and I admit, Maddog, that was interesting.” “Exactly,” I said. “As the story went it was cool to have hurdles because sometimes a dog that could not quite succeed in a standard race could quite possibly succeed as hurdler.” “In your last story, Maddog, your story included a picture of a dog with a monkey saddled up, all dressed up like a jokey. Surely you are not suggesting dog racing invest in a bunch of monkey jockeys. I hear monkeys can get kind of nasty when things don’t go well, poor sports if you will.”
I grabbed Fleas’ arm. “I know you have to go, Fleas, and we’re all worried you’ll miss your plane. One last image, Fleas?” “Hurry up, get it over with.” “Our state fair had a little track and raced pigs. It was extremely popular.” Fleas just looked at me. “I don’t know if anybody noticed, Fleas, but years ago I wrote a story that satirized public relations, when you and I and the crew dressed up in Santa and Santa’s elves, public relations somewhat over the top. “Show biz, Fleas. Show biz. I titled the story ‘And Leave the Driving to Us.’” “Maddog, I gotta go.” “I miss it, Fleas. The old days. I miss all the dogs. I miss Jones.” “You were very fond of Jones. Maddog, I think you’re swacked.” “He’s buried in our back yard. One of our cats, Edgar, must be fifteen by now, every once in a while I catch him sitting on Jones’ grave.” I felt my eyes water. Must be the peanuts. “Anthropomorphic. Fleas, anthropomorphic. Giving animals human characteristics. President Harry Truman put it this way. “Want to find a friend in Washington? Get a dog.” “I know, I know, Fleas says. “It’s the dog, Stupid.” “Darn it’s great to see you again, Fleas. What do you hear about the rest of the gang? Ben Dover? Mangy Martinez? Stan Dupp? “Not much. How’s Little Elsie?” “She’s fine. Well maybe not so fine. That was her suitcase.” “Do you want to apologize calling me a reprobate? “Why?” “It’s a down word. Degrading.” “Nah. Baloney.” Yes it is. No. Yes. No. I pulled out my phone, took a selfie just for fun, you never know who I might run into and I would show them a picture of Fleas. I texted the save file reprobate. “I’m going to write a story for The
Greyhound Review, Fleas. “It’s a Grade A publication. I am lucky and proud to be a part of it. On the other hand, historically it’s been a magazine that preaches to the choir. It needs a distributer to get it out to newsstands, start with tracks, book stores, drug stores, gas stations, the like.” “Run this one by, Fleas.” “Go ahead. I’m listening.” “Kids.” “Kids?” “Kids. Second graders, for example. Invite kids over to the track, or to the farm. Give each kid a dog to lead around. Pet pet pet. Win win win. Public relations, Fleas. Public relations. Take pictures. Lots of pictures. Make sure the news folks are invited. Give a lecture on the racing Greyhound.” I paused, cleared my throat. “Read a chapter out of one of my books.” “I wondered how long it’d take for you to get around to that, Maddog …” “Kids. Let’s see what the critics do with kids. Let’s see television and newspapers turn down that photo op. Give ‘em the works about the dog, the whole dog, and let’s watch the critics destroy themselves.” Fleas said it before I did: “It’s the
dog, Stupid.” “That’s my slogan,” I said. “Go catch your plane.” I couldn’t help myself. I gave Fleas a big hug. “Don’t kiss me,” he said. Over his shoulder he said, “Hi to Little Elsie.” “Sure thing, Fleas. Great visit. And my regards to Duncan McSwine.” In a moment my old friend from days gone by had vanished in a massive migration of travelers hiking from somewhere to somewhere else, plane to home, home to plane, plane to plane, bench to bathroom, who knows, the Minneapolis International Airport esplanade. How the years go by. I was in for a long night. And suddenly I was filled with emotion. How the years had gone by. It seems like it was in another lifetime, and yet, not so long ago, my family was into dog racing, and I do remember Fleas and the bunch, maybe by other nicknames, telling jokes and stories at weigh-in, over the fence at turnouts, milling around with programs and betting a buck or two, putting in the long days and seemingly with little fatigue, the day at Ebro a kennel got loose and dogs running every which way, and the
day at Black Hills I did the same stupid thing, nobody told me there were two doors to the kennel. We love the dogs. We did then. We do now. Those who did not, get out, the sooner the better, you don’t belong. It’s a business, I get that. It’s a sport, I get that too. I’ll never get over the thrill of watching Ol Rose, Ol Grit, Glory, and Grunt, the four ladies of the apocalypse, and Jacques Rabbeeet. And we have 22 dogs at Key West now at Ebro, and no trainer, and so the kids, underage, the state gave them licenses anyway, they saved my bacon and out of the poor house … all stories and more, many many more. But I’ll tell you something, it’s going to get better. Hang in there. The bar tender, polishing off a glass, said, “You all right?” “Me? Sure. Just wandered down memory lane for a moment.” The bar tender leaned on the bar, asked, “Who was that guy? That face was familiar.” “Fleas,” I said. “Fleas Finnegan. Retired Greyhound man.” “I knew it,” the bar tender said, “He was the driver of the shuttle bus I rode to Rochester a month ago.”

Late surge propels Charter to Wheeling kennel championship For the second half of the 2017 racing season at Wheeling Island, Charter and Lester Raines staged a battle for the top spot of the kennel standings. In the end, a late surge down the stretch propelled Charter to the kennel championship with 632 victories
– their first title since winning the crown three straight years in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Lester Raines, the defending champs, took runner up honors with 610 wins last year. In addition to the Wheeling Island by title, the Rodney Stan Cooley-operated Pawloski Charter Kennel had a stellar year at Southland Park Gaming & Racing. “Southland is our priority kennel and most of our top greyhounds go there to race, so being able to take the championship at Wheeling is even more special. It’s a great feeling to win, but our goal each year is to have a solid meet,” Cooley said. “Lester Raines is a tough one to beat, he works hard and is always competitive wherever he races. We were lucky a group of pups that came in near the end of the year started clicking right away … they were a difference-maker.” Charter’s 632 wins in 2017 are the most by a kennel at Wheeling since ZEZ put up 659 victories in 2000. The only other kennel to crack the 600-win plateau was Wayne Ward with 621 wins in their 2011 championship season. “We are very proud of what we were able to accomplish last year (2017) at Wheeling. It was a total team effort,
starting with the time and effort put in by the people working on the farms,”
Cooley noted. “I would like to thank all of our greyhound owners, especially the Bartley, Rangel and Pollard families. They all made us what we were in 2017.” Next in line behind Charter (632) and Lester Raines (610) in the final 2017 standings were Patriot/Taplin (577), Brad Boeckenstedt (502), Jacobs Racing (491), A Ray (487), Wayne Ward (478), Abrahamson (398), Steve Sarras (367), Rico Racing (313), Blanchard (293), Steubenville (232) and Clear The Way (132). The Way raced for only a part of the 2017 racing season and Blanchard started in mid-season. Pacing the Charter attack last year was KB’s Baymax with 23 victories (track win champ) while Barts Deerhunter and Dont Let Me Down each registered 14 wins. There were seven other kennel-mates with double digits in victories – TBW Tip Top and TC Marlins, 13 each; FGF Boogiewoogie and Kenny Lofton, 11 each; and Barts Cowtown, Barts Wynn, and Pondas Up Date, 10 apiece. Four other Charter racers had nine wins each – Barts Busterblue, Barts Photo Op, Bjays Holdem and Spry Melton. Cooley was quick to credit his Wheeling crew – trainer Dorothy Tober, Robert Cooley, Jay Falcone and Kim Lamberson – for the kennel’s success in 2017. “Our team did a great job and played a big part in our winning the Wheeling kennel championship,” Cooley said. As for 2018, Cooley expects another battle for the top spot in the kennel standings. “Every year it’s a challenge, and I expect the same this year at both Wheeling and Southland,” Cooley said.

While Charter garnered the most wins in 2017, Wayne Ward had the most seconds (547). Charter was tops in thirds (568) and fourths (565). Lester Raines was the leader in win percentage with 15 percent followed by Charter with 14 percent. Five kennels – Patriot/Taplin, Brad Boeckenstedt, Jacobs Racing, A Ray and Blanchard – had 13 percent.
Lester Raines led all kennels with a 41 percent trifecta mark. Jacobs Racing, A Ray and Wayne Ward were next with 40 percent while Charter and Blanchard had 39 percent. Topping the charts in starts was Charter (4,322) followed by Patriot/ Taplin (4,273), Abrahamson (3,894), Brad Boeckenstedt (3,860) and Lester Raines (3,831).

Flying Wolf Pack and Magnetic Drive Tabbed For NGA Awards A Southland sprinter and a distance specialist from Naples have picked up the NGA’s annual Awards; Flying Wolf Pack
winning the 47th Annual NGA Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter for 2017, and Magnetic Drive capturing the Flashy Sir Award as the best distance greyhound in the land. Wolf Pack easily outdistanced all vote getters for the Rural Rube and Magnetic Drive edged out Janice Dean for the Flashy Sir in this year’s voting. A 2014 son of Flying Lone Wolf-PJ by Aces Up, Wolf Pack Jim captured three stake Gartland races and made the final of another on his way to winning 30 races and capturing the win title at Southland for the year. He also put together a 10 race win streak against the best in the country and was easily tabbed as the best sprinter in the land. He was also voted Captain of the All American team by the AGTOA. Owned by Vince Berland and racing for the Lester Raines Kennel, Wolf Pack started the year on a slow note winning just twice in his first 12 starts. As stake action picked up however, he put it in gear in time to capture the Hound Madness Championship in March. Next up was the Southland Sprint. After impressive qualifying wins, he was bumped at the break and ran 4th in the final to eventual winner, Bar Gin. After a couple more rough trips and a brief layoff, Wolf Pack came back with a vengeance, reeling off ten straight wins including a victory in the Best of the Best Series. He had two wins in stakes qualifying on
his way to a game win in the $150,000 Darby Henry Male Sprint during the Southland Festival of Stakes. He finished out 2017 with 5 more wins giving him 30 for the year. His final stat line for the year was 61-30-97-5, almost a 50% win clip. A well deserved award and congratulations Vince, Raines Kennel and all the connections of Flying Wolf Pack. Runner-up in the Rural Rube voting was Randy Toler’s RT’s Bo Jangles who raced for Cal Holland at Derby Lane. This son of Kiowa Mon MannyPenrose Karrie captured the National win title this past year after winning 45 races at the St. Pete oval. He also picked up a couple of stake wins and was named to the All American team as well. He compiled an amazing 71-45-12-4-4 record over the course of 2017 and most likely would have been a shoe in for the Rural Rube in any other year. Others high in the voting for the Rural Rube were Bob Hardison’s Konomi, Anthony Napolitano’s Janice Dean, John & Bob Hardison’s Bar Gin and Jon Stidham’s JD Implosion. Voting was much closer in the Flashy Sir contest. In a very competitive race, six greyhounds received
double digit votes and were separated by only six votes in total. In the end Magnetic Drive won out over Janice Dean, Flyin Honor Code, Raiders Bacardi, Red Handed and Ethanol, in that order. Magnetic Drive is a white and red son of Flying Westover-Johara and is owned by Anthony Napolitano, Jr. His dam, Johara, finished 4th in the final 2017 Dam Standings. He raced for the Brindle Kennel at Naples for the majority of the year. His 2017 campaign at Naples was nothing short of extraordinary. He was dubbed the “Phenom” by the Naples chartwriter based on his many unbelievable performances. His credentials for the year read as follows: Naples Marathon Champion, 2nd in the Naples Derby to Fire Blitzen, track win leader, fastest 3/8ths time of year, fastest marathon time of the year, and AGTOA All American. Overall 2017 record – 47-32-6-1-2. He began the year on a good note winning his first start on January 1st. From there he would pick up 13 more wins in 18 starts including winning all qualifying rounds heading into the Naples Derby. In the final he lost to Fire Blitzen by a length and a half in a tough, tough race. With the Derby over, he would switch to the 7/16 distance and after a 2nd place finish in his first effort, the “Phenom” would reel off six wins in a row including a victory in the Naples Marathon Championship. During qualifying he ripped off the season’s fastest time for the distance of 42.65. After winning the Marathon stake he switched back to 3/8ths and would win 10 of his next 12 outings, finishing 2nd and 3rd in the other two. Several of those wins would be by double digit

WW Whatsapp Surprises in $75,000 Silver Cup On Saturday evening March 10th at bestbet Jacksonville the house was packed, and not just for the free T-Shirts, as everyone wanted
to see the finals of the richest race of the year, the 2018 $75,000 James J. Patton Silver Cup. The field was a stellar one with 6 of the 8 greyhounds winning 2 or more
rounds in qualifying and everyone was hedging their bets on Fix A Drink, who was undefeated in qualifying, to stay the course and run the table, but like in life, not everything goes as planned. As the lure rum- by bled through the far Kelly turn and announcer Clark Joe Ross bellowed out the familiar call of Here’s Comes
Rusty, the box popped up and we were racing, racing, racing in the finals of the 2018 Patton Silver Cup. Everyone that looked at this race knew it was going to be all about the break, and as it turned out, it was. Exploding to the front end was the inside part of the racetrack. Jedi Texas
(left to right) Eric Griffin II, Jervon Blackley, Trainer and Global Racing Kennel Owner, Eric Griffin, Director of Pari-Mutuel Operations, Dawn Clark & Kai Griffin.Leadout is Artimus Jones.
Acre was first to the lead as he seized early command just a few strides out of the starting box. He was followed closely by WW Whatsapp and Speedo Tuxedo. The rest of the field was even across the board behind them as race favorite, Fix A Drink, came out last and would have some work to do to get into contention. The lead duo would get some help early on as L’s Sum Dog would move to the rail and crowd up the middle of the racetrack as they approached the wire the first time down the racetrack. Fix A Drink also made a move out wide and circled the crowd and found a lane to rush the turn in. As the leaders continued toward the turn, Jedi Texas Acre held a slim lead over WW Whatsapp and the trailing chaser Speedo Tuxedo. Fix A Drink was on the move too as he catapulted by the inside rushers and up into position as they started to round the turn. The leaders didn’t change as they went through the turn and headed for the backside, but the rest of the chasing field found even more trouble. Drink It Off was crowded down on the rail and that caused him to collide with LK’s Black Gold and Midnight Loot moving both early speeders back out of contention. Straightening out up the backside, Jedi Texas Acre looked strong on the lead and maintained his one length margin over the pressuring WW Whatsapp as Speedo Tuxedo chased a few more lengths behind in third. Fix A Drink was further back, but clear and looking to mount a charge as the rest of the field was a distance behind them. By the far turn this really turned into a two-greyhound race for the win, and the only question that remained
was who was going to get the best of whom in the stretch. Jedi Texas Acre clung to the evaporating lead as WW Whatsapp was on a mission to catch the leader before the wire. Behind them things were changing as well. The tiring chaser Speedo Tuxedo was overtaken by Fix a Drink and his brother, Orange Park Derby winner, Drink It Off who was shifting gears and picking off greyhounds one by one from the back of the pack. Down the stretch the leaders went and gone was the small lead that Jedi Texas Acre possessed early on. WW
Whatsapp had pulled even with the leader, dug in with everything he had, jetted to the lead, and never looked back. Drawing away late, he crossed as the easy winner by 2.5 lengths in the fastest trip on the card, 30.78 seconds. Jedi Texas Acre had to settle for place after a strong front running trip. Third at the wire was Drink It Off, who despite the break, probably ran the biggest race of all the finalists. Overcoming trouble twice and running down as many greyhounds as he did, including his brother in the stretch, he was the definition of all out effort in this race. Race favorite Fix

A Drink could never overcome the slow break, and after a strong rush to the turn, couldn’t gain on the leaders and was out closed late for fourth. Completing the field were LK’s Black Gold in 5th, Speedo Tuxedo in 6th, L’s Sum Dog in 7th, and Midnight Loot in 8th. Congratulations head out to Trainer, and Global Racing Kennel Owner, Eric Griffin, on his winning return to stakes racing competition here at bestbet Jacksonville. Eric used to train for the B & J Kennel back in the day and has raised and trained several stakes winning greyhounds in the past here at bestbet. Congratulations also head out to the breeder and Owner of WW Whatsapp, Julia Ward, for providing us with yet another quality greyhound to run at our racetrack. Not even two years old yet, this greyhound has plenty of races left in his and I’m sure you will be hearing his name a lot in the future as there are several more stakes races to enter and several more chances to win them this year at bestbet Jacksonville.
Kelsos littermates off to solid start In the second half of the 2010 racing season at Wheeling Island, Kelsos Jam Jar was one of the track’s top Grade AA greyhounds.
The sprint star had 10 top grade victories in a fourmonth stretch and was a finalist in the $100,000 Wheeling Island Invitational in November after a victory and a pair of seconds in the preliminary round races. Now, five of Kelsos Jam Jar’s offspring, sired by Kelsos Cork Man, are racing at Wheeling. Sisters by Kelsos Ukulele, Stan Kelsos Jam Tart and Pawloski Kelsos Lolly have climbed the ladder to Grade AA, while
brothers Kelsos Bisto Kid has made it to Grade A and Kelsos McGregor has reached Grade B. The littermates turned 2 years old in February and have combined for 26 wins, 25 seconds, 26 thirds and 16 fourths in 140 starts through early
March. They are owned by John Kelly. Lester Raines Kennel trainer Joel Roden, who handled Kelsos Jam Jar eight years ago, thinks the youngsters have potential. “This is the first Kelsos Cork ManKelsos Jam Jar litter I have had so I was excited when they arrived in Wheeling. They look like a solid group,” Roden said. “They are hard-trying and can only get better as they mature and get more experience. I’m not surprised they have moved up in grade.” Kelsos Ukulele reached Grade AA in 15 starts, and has three top grade wins on her resume. Her game is getting out of the box and driving to the first turn. “She’s a breaker and a rusher. She needs to hit the lid and be on or close to

the lead early in her races,” Roden said. “She’s not going to come from off the pace, but she can hold her own if she gets around second or third.” Kelsos Ukulele has five box-towire victories, two in Grade AA. In her first 33 starts, she had 9 wins, 5 seconds, 6 thirds and 2 fourths. Kelsos Jam Tart climbed to Grade AA in 13 trips, but has yet to register a victory against the track’s top sprinters although she’s hit the ticket a few times. “Like Kelsos Ukulele, Kelsos Jam Tart needs to be out of the box quickly and near the lead. She can be a tad short, but I expect her to get stronger,” Roden noted. “She’s still trying to figure out the Grade AA races.” In her first 34 races, Kelsos Jam Tart had 7 wins, 4 seconds, 10 thirds and 2 fourths. Kelsos Lolly had several impressive races early in her career as she moved
up to the top grade. She won Maiden by 6 ½ lengths, Grade D by 2 lengths, Grade C by 7 ½ lengths, Grade B by 5 lengths and Grade A by 5 lengths – four of those wins were box-to-wire efforts. “Kelsos Lolly has more go-go power than her sisters when she gets loose. She pulls away on the lead and can close on greyhounds in front of her,” Roden said. “I think her early foot will improve as she gets older.” In her first 27 starts, Kelsos Lolly had 6 wins, 6 seconds, 5 thirds and 2 fourths. Kelsos Bisto Kid has been a nice ticket greyhound early in his career, but lacks his sisters’ front speed. He prefers an inside post. “It’s taken him more time to get it together, but I think he’ll end up being an upper grade greyhound,” Roden said.
In his first 32 races, Kelsos Bisto Kid had 3 wins, 8 seconds, 3 thirds and 7 fourths. Kelsos McGregor opened his career at Derby Lane in Florida before coming to Wheeling late last year. He had 1 win, 2 seconds, 2 thirds and 3 fourths in his first 14 outings. “He’s still figuring out the track since coming up from St. Pete,” Roden said. “I see a lot of room for improvement with him.” Overall, Roden is pleased with the way the litter has developed. “I’m very pleased with the litter’s progress,” Roden said. “They have been a nice addition to the kennel.” Littermates Kelsos Geta Grip (Grade AA) and Kelsos Tonto (Grade C) are racing at Southland Park Gaming and Racing while Kelsos Jam On It (Grade A) is competing at Derby Lane.

KB’s Baymax captures Wheeling win leader crown Charter Kennel operator Rodney Cooley thought KB’s Baymax had a good shot to be a solid sprinter at Wheeling Island.
Never did Cooley expect KB’s Baymax to be the track win champion in her first year of racing. Before coming to Wheeling in early March 2017, KB’s Baymax broke in at Valley Race Park. In 11 starts at the Texas track, she had 5 wins, 2 seconds and 2 fourth and captured the Kings and Queens Stakes as the abbreviated racing season by ended. “Baymax was Stan pretty solid at Pawloski Valley, but it was hard to judge from just a few starts how well she would do coming up to Wheeling,” Cooley said. “I never imagined she would turn out to be the track win leader. She’s definitely been a pleasant surprise.” Last year, KB’s Baymax captured the track win championship with 23 victories in 10 months of racing – 15 of her wins against Grade AA company and two ahead of runner ups Barts Outofmyway and AMF Ex Quigley, both with 21 wins. KB’s Baymax hit the superfecta ticket in 60 percent of her races, and had a 50 percent trifecta finish. KB’s Baymax’s box speed and rush to the first turn fueled her success at Wheeling Island. In all but two of her 23 victories, the speedster had the lead by the first turn while in her other two wins she closed from second in the homestretch. “Her early speed is ideal for Wheeling, a perfect fit. She needs to
be on or close to the front early in her races,” Cooley noted. “She’s not going
to come from off the pace to win races.” Post position did not seem to be a factor for KB’s Baymax. She won from every post position last year except the four box – a hole she only drew twice. A March 2015 greyhound out of Rhythmless-Miss Adelaide, KB’s Baymax was quite streaky. Four times during last year’s racing season she put together three-race win streaks. “If she breaks sharp and able to rush to the lead, she’s capable of stringing victories together,” Cooley said. KB’s Baymax, off for some rest since Charter Kennel’s KB’s Baymax captured the 2017 win leader crown at Wheeling Island with 23 victories. The sprinter is held by trainer Dorothy Tober. John Valazquez Captures Derby Lane Sprint ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A full moon lit up Derby Lane on a splendid Florida winter night.
The $64,000 Sprint Classic - the track’s richest 550yard stakes race in its 43rd year - was moments from being run on March 3, and many greyhound fans
believed they knew how the championship would be decided: First one to leave the starting box would be the first to reach the finish line. John Valazquez proved them right. “It was like whoever broke by first (would win),’’ Don Capabal kennel Jensen owner Henry Parker said. “If my dog missed his break, he’s done for.’’ In a series dominated by early breakers with the first 10 of 12 qualifying races won in box-to-wire manner, John Valazquez always was a step ahead of his foes. He broke first in all five races – winning four – and entered the finale as the point leader at 54. Not only did John Valazquez win his second consecutive stakes title this year, but he began to build an early resume as a contender for 2018 All-America honors. In his two stakes finales – the $18,000 1925 Historical Inaugural Jan. 6 and the Sprint Classic – John Valazquez defeated 2017 AllAmerica first-team sprinter RT’s Bo Jangles of Cal Holland kennel. RT’s Bo Jangles, Derby Lane’s two-time defending meet win leader and prohibitive wagering favorite in both stakes, was fourth in the Sprint Classic and second in the Inaugural. The Sprint Classic title race was
the fifth time in six meetings since Jan. 3 that John Valazquez had finished ahead of the dual stakes-winning RT’s Bo Jangles. “(John Valazquez) is at his peak,’’ Parker said. “We’re running really good right now. It’s just timing, and he had to be right on top of his game (to win).’’ John Valazquez, a 38-month-old
male from a litter by Dragon Fire and Awesome Fling, won by three lengths in 30.26 seconds – his third best clocking from 101 starts. His 44th career victory elevated his bankroll to more than $58,000 with the $25,000 first-place paycheck. He paid $8 to win as the second wagering choice. “It’s exciting because it was a nice field of dogs, and good money,’’ trainer Belinda Parker said. “He just had to have his two steps out of the box, and off he went.’’ John Valazquez is owned by Kathleen (Bette) Thurber of Vernon, Fla. Her late husband, Raymond Thurber, died Sept. 11 at age 74. He named the greyhound after thoroughbred jockey John Velazquez, a twotime Kentucky Derby-winning rider and 2012 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame inductee with more

than 5,800 victories, “I worked for Ray when I was 18 at Hinsdale (Greyhound Park in New Hampshire),’’ Belinda Parker said. “This (win) means a lot.’’ It was Capabal’s third Sprint Classic crown in the past seven years. Joey Ice, the 2014 All-America captain, won that year and SE’s Chewie prevailed in 2012. “(John Valazquez) is a special dog,’’ Henry Parker said. “It’s pretty hard to live up to Joey Ice.’’ Kaias Blackjack (Floyd kennel) finished second in the Sprint Classic, his best career stakes finish. “I’m very happy,’’ kennel co-owner Patty Floyd said. “His owner (George Adler) has been very good to us, and he’s run dogs (at Derby Lane) a long, long time.’’ PJ Backupoffme (Rangel) nosed out RT’s Bo Jangles for third. The remainder order of finish: Light Her Up (Abernathy), SE’s Wepon X (Nova), Imark Keefer (Abernathy) and CH Nuttin Honey (Lester Raines).

Derby Lane Sprinter Takes National Win Title Derby Lane sprint star and All American, RT’s Bo Jangles captured the 2017 National win title racking up an impressive 45 wins during the year. Owned by Randy Toler of Penrose, CO and raced by the Cal Holland kennel, the big fawn also picked up a couple of stake wins and garnered All American honors for his 2017 campaign. The brilliant male out of Kiowa Mon Manny-Penrose Karrie started out the year a bit sluggish winning two races before actually dropping into grade B at the beginning of February. Eventually, he would pick up two more wins before the month was over. A couple of lackluster starts early in March would not be an indicator of things to come. Beginning March 17, Bo Jangles would start a streak of 26 straight races where he finished no worse than third, culminating with a six length romp on July 19. The streak included 19 wins. After encountering trouble at the turn and finishing 6th in his start on July 24, he took off again. Over the
course of his next 30 starts, the speedster would finish out of the money only
twice, while winning 22, finishing 2nd five times, 3rd once and 4th twice. Along the way, Bo Jangles captured the Thanksgiving Stake and the HowlO-Ween Stake. He finished the 2017 campaign with a record of 71-45-12-4-4 for an incredible win rate of 63% as well finishing in the money 91% of the time. Congratulations to Randy Toler for raising such a nice hound and to the connections of the Cal Holland kennel for keeping the superstar sound and sharp throughout the year!

Flower Girl electrifies fans with closing rushes When it comes to fantastic finishes, not too many greyhounds do it better than Flower Girl.
Since breaking in at Wheeling Island in mid-October 2016, the late closer quickly turned into a fan favorite – first in her sprint starts and now in 3/8th after the move to the longer distance. Flower Girl has never been among the track’s win leaders, but for consistency and hitting the trifectasuperfecta tickets, she’s a gem. In 86 by career races, she’s Stan hit the pay sheet in Pawloski nearly 77 percent of her races as well as generating plenty of excitement at the track. “You can always count of Flower Girl being near the back early on – she’s slow out of the box and slow to the first turn. But with her, the race is never over until it’s over,” Abrahamson Kennel’s trainer Tom Engle said. “If she gets around fifth, she can win and even if she gets around eighth, she still can hit the ticket if not win.” Owner Michael Stout, who raised Flower Girl on his Kansas farm, is thrilled by her success. “She looked nice on the farm, but we didn’t know she’d turn out as good as she has. We are so proud of her,” Stout said. “Tom (Engle) has done a great job with Flower Girl and we appreciate all the work he and his helpers put in.” A November 2014 greyhound out of Djays Octane-Keen Katy, Flower Girl has 14 wins, 18 seconds, 18 thirds and 16 fourths in 86 career races.
It didn’t take long for racing fans to notice Flower Girl and her powerful closing rushes from way off the pace.
In climbing the ladder to Grade AA in 5/16th, she had several highlight film finishes along the way. In her Maiden victory, Flower Girl was seventh around the first turn and fourth coming home before winning by half a length. After a couple close misses in Grade C when she came from sixth in the stretch to get second, Flower Girl drew a preferred eight box in back-to-back starts. Flower Girl won both of those races (Grades C and B) by 9 ½ and 4 lengths after clearing the first turn third in each outing. Two starts later, she pulled Abrahamson Kennel’s Flower Girl quickly turned into a fan favorite at Wheeling Island with her powerful, closing rushes. She is held by Kayla Purdy. (Photo by Stan Pawloski)
off another fast finish – coming from fourth in the stretch to win Grade A by a neck. “Usually she starts to make her move on the far turn and at the top of the homestretch she’ll swing wide,” Engle said. “In the stretch she’s like a runaway freight train … a blur.” Flower Girl continued in sprint races for the first half of the 2017 racing season, bouncing back and forth between Grades AA and A, but consistently hitting the board in both classes. She did pocket a Grade AA sprint start by a neck in July after being sixth around the first turn and fourth at the top of the homestretch. In August 2017, Stout and Engle decided to switch Flower Girl to the longer 3/8th distance. “I had no doubt she would be able
to go 3/8th. If we still had marathon 7/16th races, I think she would be hard to beat at that distance,” Engle said. Flower Girl had two thirds and three fourths in her first five 3/8th starts, coming from off the pace as she did in her sprint races. In her next trip, she came from fifth at the escape turn to win by 2 ½ lengths in Grade B. Four races later Flower Girl won Grade A with another power move in the stretch. Ever since, she’s been a solid Grade AA middle distance competitor – winning five of her 22 races against the track’s top 3/8th runners in typical Flower Girl fashion. In one Grade AA 3/8th race in late October, Flower Girl stunned the field and fans by going right to the front. She was up by 3 lengths at the escape turn, 5 lengths at the top of the stretch
and 12 ½ lengths at the wire. “Although she has broken a little better at times in 3/8th, that is not going to happen very often,” Engle said. Engle always thought Flower Girl had track smarts – maybe more so as she’s gotten older and more experienced. “When she was younger, all she wanted to do was go outside and try to circle the field,” Engle noted. “Now, she’ll go inside to pass greyhounds. If you watch her close, she makes some smart moves maneuvering through traffic.” At 3 ½ years old, Flower Girl hasn’t lost her drive and determination. “She sure has been fun to watch and I think fans enjoy seeing greyhounds with a come-from-behind racing style,” Stout said.

ustralian bloodlines have played a huge role in our domestic greyhound stock throughout the century of track racing in
America. (Okay, it’s “just” 99 years—and counting.) They continue to do so, evidenced by the pedigrees of contemporary stake stars here in the States, and as documented in this particular column. Tell You Why*, the Aussie
import whelped in 1957, clearly leads the way in the category of Aussie contributors. At the turn of the millennium, he was named in a Review poll as the most influential sire of the 20th Century in America. As we noted more than 25 years ago: “Tell You Why’s singular greatness becomes more remarkable with each passing decade; there may never be another like him.” (from intro to “Great Names in Greyhound Pedigrees—the Eighties”). Nothing has happened in the last 25 years--not even the effects of frozen semen—to alter that assertion. We mention this now because of the endless list of greyhound pedigrees we’ve microscoped over the years in these columns, and how significantly they swarm with Tell You Why* entries. Yes, it’s in the far-back of all pedigrees now; but despite being well “off the page” of every modern-day pedigree, TYW almost
always ranks in the Top Five of ancestors contributing to the linebreeding quotient (also called the “blood quota,” as documented by GreyhoundData). Quick history review: Most litters sired by Tell You Why* in the 1960s were noteworthy on the racetrack. If percentage of pups reaching Grade A had been kept, we speculate that no sire with any volume of offspring would have surpassed him. As broods, his daughters didn’t leave nearly the mark his sons did, but the one daughter that did excel in a profound way (Miss Gorgeous) is found multiple times in the pedigrees of most American greyhounds today. We know of no sire who had as many productive sons as Tell You Why* did. The Sire Standings in the 1960s and ‘70s attest to that, as Westy Whizzer, Cactus Lonesome, Hoefer, Tell Tom, Trap Rock, Westy Colonel, Runyon’s Genius and others led the
way. The primary channels through which the TYW line would endure were the incredible Westy Whizzer and much-less-heralded (but solid) racer, Hoefer, who gave us the “Jones” greyhounds. As we’ll see, six of the eight spotlighted pedigrees below all trace their top, paternal sire line back to Tell You Why*, through Hoefer. And, as it so happens, all six of them come through the vein of Kelly Jones, his son Unruly, his son Oshkosh Racey, and his son Flying Penske. While the TYW dominance hasn’t ebbed one bit over the years, and while Westy Whizzer and Hoefer have continually battled for dominance as the top strain of that dynasty (even as recently as last year when Djays Octane, a Hoefer descendant, vied with KC And All, a Westy Whizzer descendant, for Sire Standings top honors), this particular vein is clearly the hottest sire line out there right now. High praises must go to the most recent legacy-making member of that Hall Of Fame trio— Flying Penske. Two trivial stats on the following octet of spotlighted honorees: six of the eight are black; all eight are males. Purely coincidental…. We apologize for throwing so many pedigrees at you at one time, but as long as credible tracks with quality competition keep providing meaningful stake events with qualifying prelims and decent stake purses, that’s a
problem we’ll gladly embrace. Keep it up, Southland, Derby Lane, Orange Park, Palm Beach and Naples! Barts Big Bang Taking on the list of honorees alphabetically, we start with the veteran racer Barts Big Bang, winner of the $50,000 James W. Paul Derby at Palm Beach in late February. Owned by Rhonda Bartley and raced by the James Douglas Kennel, he’s a black October 2014 son of Pat C ClementBarts Magpie. Barts Big Bang also ran third in both the 2017 He’s My Man Classic and St. Patrick’s Day Stake. His Derby win was the 39th of his career, and his record this season is 16-2-2-1 in his last 35 starts. Pat C Clement is the source of the TYW/Hoefer male line, by way of Kelly Jones, Unruly, Racey and Penske (the latter three all Hall Of Famers and classic sires). Clement’s dam has that unique inbreeding by way of Pat C Clementine’s sire, Cee Jay, who was by Hall of Famer HB’s Commander and Commander’s own sister, HB’s Creole Baby. The rare brother-sister cross certainly worked well in Clement’s case, as he’s had several offspring featured in this column—and he has another stake winning pup coming up later in this piece. Barts Magpie goes back to Gable Dodge (i.e., Westy Whizzer line) on top, while her dam is an Irish/ American hybrid (out of WW Time Warp and Mustang Magpie*). The bottom line, through Bold Belle, goes back to Whisper Wishes (an Irish son of Sand Man, whose dam Miss Gorgeous was by TWY… remember?) and the super dam Evening Daisy, a direct female-line granddaughter of the immortal female Yurituni, whose offspring included world-famous Ballyregan Bob and Just Lilly* (found behind Oswald Cobblepot—a grandsire of Barts Paradox, by the way). Several individuals are tripled up behind Barts Big Bang: Akbar and Princess Donna (two of those through HB’s Commander), Rooster Cogburn,

K’s Flak and Evening Daisy. Tell You Why* is the second highest source of linebreeding, as provided by Greyhound-Data. BGR Cheetah The next spotlighted greyhound’s pedigree hails from the very same Penske/Racey/Kelly Jones sire line— only it’s through Djays Octane and his son Boc’s Blast Off. BGR Cheetah, owned and raced by Brad Boeckenstedt, captured the Naples Sprint Stake earlier in the year. He’s a red April 2016 male, out of Boc’s Slim N Fit. Boc’s Blast Off won the NGA’s Flashy Sir Award as the best distance greyhound in America in 2012, and was featured in this column in the July-August 2012 issue of the Review. His bottom dam line goes back to Angels Hot Box, offering another HB’s Commander entry (Oswald Cobblepot contributing the other Commander appearance). Tail dam line traces to Top Speed*-Shining Pat, a dominant family in its day, back in the 1960s and ‘70s. Boc’s Slim N Fit made her biggest niche previously by producing Boeckenstedt’s stake star Boc’s Tony Romo (by Flying Penske)—but more on him in a moment. Slim N Fit is by Dox Out Of Peace (not a household pedigree name), who was by Greys Statesman—who offers the tightest linebreeding here, as he also appearance behind Blast Off in his third generation). Gable Dodge produced the tail dam line in conjunction with Final Flame, who was by Shiver Me Timber and Valensky (also the mother of Cobblepot). Tripled up in Cheetah’s pedigree are Commander, Flak, Dutch Bahama and Unruly. Tell You Why is the fourth leading contributor of linebreeding behind Cheetah, appearing way back 58 times. BGR Monster Boeckenstedt swept the two winter stakes at Naples, as BGR Cheetah’s kennelmate, BGR Monster won the $40,000 Naples Derby on Mar. 3. Monster is a July 2016 black son of
previously-mentioned Boc’s Tony Romo and Boc’s Jennyfinch. BGR Monster’s dad, Tony Romo proved his versatility, winning stakes at both Southland and at Bluffs Run. Note that his mother is the same dam that produced BGR Cheetah, when bred to another of Brad’s Penske descendants, Boc’s Blast Off. Boc’s Jennyfinch is by Oya Tom Terrific, out of Boc’s Miss Rodeo. The latter’s sire, Flare Gun, was by P’s Raising Cain and Flaregas, who was a sister to Oswald Cobblepot (HB’s Commander-Valensky). On the very bottom resides Rodeo Star Fly, who was by Greys Statesman (whose name shows up in a lot of this column’s pedigrees) and Rodeo Star, who descends back to the fine female Indian Lore, daughter of Decorate Moss (IU). Two Greys Statesman and Valensky appearances highlight the linebreeding somewhat close up, while appearing further back are three Unrulys and Dia’s Stormy Days, four HB’s Commanders, and five K’s Flaks and Rooster Cogburns. Tell You Why is the third most powerful linebreeding influence, with 77 (seventy-seven! In just 12 generations) distant appearances. Drink It Off Another Pat C Clement (and another Bartley-bred greyhound) offspring is our next honoree—Drink It Off, a fawn brindle May 2016 son of Clement and Barts Sweet Pea. Owned by Kate Bartley-Johnson and raced by the Blanchard Kennel, Drink It Off captured the Orange Park Derby this past winter; she also ran second to her own littermate, Fix A Drink, in the Orange Park Holiday Sprint last December. Clement, we’ve already discussed—noting also that his stock as a sire continues to rise. Barts Sweet Pea, like the last honoree’s dam, is by a little-known sire—Amazing Andrew, but out of a dam who goes back to Gable Dodge (through his son Gable Oscar). The tail dam line goes back to Barts Hot Mail, whose dad Barts E
Mail was a 1999 All-American and Southland Derby winner. This bottom lineage goes farther back to Greys Fire Drill, who was by Odd Spotliter and Greys Jasmine (K’s FlakRepresentation), making her a full sister to Greys Statesman. Friend Westy-Miss Gorgeous shows up six times in the far-back brackets of this pedigree, while Downing appears there five times (three of those through Understand, and four of those appearances through the dam, Barts Sweet Pea). Showing up thrice are K’s Flak, Rooster Cogburn, Akbar and Dia’s Stormy Day; appearing twice are Commander and Unruly. TYW’s role? Third highest linebreeding contributor with 43 appearances. Dutch Brew JoAnn Koerner’s Dutch Brew is our next honoree, having won the $25,000 Southland Delta Course Derby in February. The black February 2015 male, racing for the Raines Kennel, had 26 career wins, 18 seconds and 13 thirds as of Mar. 3, mostly at rich-paying distance races at Southland (he began his career at TriState). The nation’s top sire in 2017, Djays Octane, produced Dutch Brew, in conjunction with Chasmo’s Ginger. Octane’s pups have appeared in this column many times, and so often it’s because of their feats at Southland. That Dutch Brew won this particular distance stake in 46.88 after being sixth on the chartwriter’s second call, is just one of countless examples of the distance propensity in many Octane pups. Chasmo’s Ginger is by Lewis And Wax, a son of Greys Statesman (whose name keeps cropping up in this particular column). Lewis And Wax’s dam, Hear What I Say, was by Molotov and Shawn Robinson, who was by Hall Of Famer K’s Broadway and Unique Idea (from the famed Pat C Best Yet-Sherry Can Do cross). Ginger’s dam, Chasmo’s Layla, was by Lonesome Cry (who was by Gable Dodge—another name that keeps
emerging in this particular column), out of Chasmo’s Shaney, whose bottom dam lines goes back to Dark Rainbow (Downing-All Heart*), who was a sister to Bold Footprint and Army Brat. (Watch for more on All Heart*, later in this piece.) Doubled up in this pedigree are Oswald Cobblepot, Pat C Best Yet, K’s Flak and Dutch Bahama. Tripled up are Commander, Dia’s Stormy Day and Kunte Kinte. Onie Jones and Rooster each make four appearances, distantly. TYW: 54 times; third most influential on Dutch Brew’s linebreeding contributor list. John Valazquez Owned by Ray Thurber and racing for Capabal Kennel, John Valazquez is the new Derby Lane $64,000 Sprint Classic champ (won on Mar. 3). His win upped his record to 8-1-2-2 in his first 14 starts this year at St. Pete. Last season, he won 16 races in 31 outings. John Valazquez is a January 2015 black son of Dragon Fire-Awesome Fling—the first honoree who does not descend from a Tell You Why* top sire line. Instead, he’s from another Aussie family—that of Brother Fox (a Temlee descendant), through Dragon Fire’s dad, Brett Lee. (In actuality, if you trace Temlee’s top line back, he comes from Irish bloodlines, via Pigalle Wonder and the Champion Prince line—but the Aussies can take much of the credit for most of the rest of the pedigree.) Much of Brett Lee’s pedigree descends from the same roots that produced TYW—that is, Rocket Jet and Gorgeous Babe. As with a number of the spotlighted pedigrees here, the sire of the dam behind John Valazquez, is a lesser known figure—in this case, Snow Blower (a Kiowa Sweet Trey son). His bottom line, through Contessas Rose descends from HB’s Prince Red (Commander’s brother), out of a dam line that descends from the great producing female, Mac’s Diane (think of Tuf Miler). And, once again, we find Gable Dodge lurking in the lower brackets of the pedigree, and once
again it’s through son Lonesome Cry (in the very same location we find these two behind Dutch Brew). In the anchor dam line, behind Tarnished Sun, you’ll find a number of excellent producers including Orange Drive and Lonely Survivor. Ultimately, the bottom line traces back to the foundational dam Tim’s Ace. (See her chapter in “Great Names in Greyhound Pedigrees,” Vol. 1.) Other than five distant appearances by Downing, as well as the two HB’s Commander and one Prince Red (combining for three of the Downings), there’s not much close linebreeding. TYW shows up 54 times far back— ranking him fourth on the power linebreeding quotient. PJ Deposit Now Back to Southland, winner of the $25,000 River Course Classic on Mar. 4 was PJ Deposit Now, owned by Jay Rangel and Paul Bitterman, racing for Charter Kennel. A 12-race winner last year and a finalist in the Ansel Styles Marathon at Southland, Deposit Now is near the front on the win-list at Southland in 2018, with nine triumphs in 12 outings as of this writing. PJ Deposit Now is a black March 2015 son of Djays Octane-Starz Blue Ruby (giving Octane pups both major stake events at Southland this year— and both of them over longer courses). Starz Blue Ruby is by Trent Lee, out of Mercury, whose bottom dam line goes back to the very same anchor dam, All Heart* (daughter of the classic Yurituni), that we found in the bottom bracket behind the other Southland stake winner, Dutch Brew. Doubled up in the pedigree are Oshkosh Racey (top sire line, as well as the sire of Joann’s Klemma in the bottom bracket), K’s Flak, Dia’s Stormy Day and Rooster Cogburn. A very nice recipe for success, that particular bloodline combo. Tell You Why* is the second leading contributor to blood intensity (despite having been whelped 61 years ago). A good reason not to overlook the contribution of Deposit Now’s dam,
Starz Blue Ruby…well, just read on. There was more than one female from this bloodline family whose pups would excel this past season. Top Notch, Tip Top The list of honorees this issue comes first circle, back to Palm Beach, with the spotlight shining on Top Notch, winner of the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic on Jan. 27 at the South Florida track. He’s a brother to the equally famous Tip Top, who won 16 straight at Palm Beach going back to the end of 2017, and who was a finalist in the He’s My Man stake. Top Notch, who also finished third in the 2017 Dick Andrews Futurity, and his brother Tip Top are both black males, whelped January 2016, by Barcelona Boss-Kiowa Starz Sage. They both race for the Rader Racing Team—Top Notch owned by Norm Rader, and Tip Top owned by Just Win Enterprises. Via Barcelona Boss, the “Top” littermates defy the majority rule (i.e., most everyone featured in this column descending from TYW on the top line) and join John Valazquez as another descendant of the Brother Fox/Temlee line from Australia. Barcelona Boss’s dam, Kendra, is by the Irish sire Larking About*, with Boss’s only true domestic lineage coming through his maternal granddam Secrets Told (a Molotov daughter, out of Courtesan, who on her very bottom resides Miss Peel, one of the great daughters of Sand ManMaythorn Pride). Barcelona Boss carved his racing reputation as a strong finisher in stake events at the Southland track. Dam of the “Top” littermate is Kiowa Starz Sage, who is a Trent Lee daughter, giving Top Notch and Tip Top another Australian line tracing back to Brother Fox and Temlee (recalling that Temlee had two entries of Magic Babe, a brother to Tell You Why). As with so many of the pedigrees featured here, in that bottom bracket resides Gable Dodge—and again it’s through his son Lonesome Cry, as the sire of Starz Magma. Amazingly, Kiowa Starz Sage is
bred ever-so-closely like Starz Blue Ruby (the dam of PJ Deposit Now, just reviewed!), thus also traces back to the All Heart* dam line shared by three of the spotlighted stake winners this column. Let’s call Kiowa Starz Sage and Starz Blue Ruby ¾ (or some fraction close to that) sisters, since they are both by Trent Lee, while the dam of Ruby (Mercury) is the granddam of Sage. The fact that one succeeded with Djays Octane, while the other worked superbly with a different bloodline family altogether (i.e., Barcelona Boss) drives home the quality of this female line. Downing appears seven times in Top Notch’s pedigree, while there are four entries of Brother Fox. In the farback brackets, Temlee shows up 14 times. Despite the fact that these two brothers don’t descend from a Tell You Why top line, TWY still appears 53 times in the pedigree. On that note, we’ll not be relating TYW’s blood quota on future spotlighted pedigrees. The incredible role he’s played as a progenitor should be quite obvious by now to all who’ve had the patient to stay with this lengthy dive into pedigree studies. Thus no further evidence of his unparalleled impact on our bloodlines is needed. Honorable Mention Just prior to Review deadline, WW Whatsapp, of the Global Kennel, captured the James Patton Silver Cup at Orange Park. Owned by Julia Ward, Whatsapp is a white and red March 2016 son of KC And All (Gable Dodge-KC Did It Best) and WW’s Sweet Heart (Kiowa WW Brother and WW’s Sweet Apple, whose dam, WW Apple Butter, was a sister to superspeedy stake star WW Apple Jax, of the 2004 era). As with most of the honorees this issue, WW Whatsapp is a direct maleline descendant of Tell You Why*--only his route is via Westy Whizzer/Big Whizzer/Understood/Wigwam Wag/ Gable Dodge—which represents just one of the 78 appearances by TYW in Whatsapp’s ancestry. Yes, once again the TYW beat goes on.
