The new Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art

Fiona Crisp: Material Sight

Opening March 2018*

Fiona Crisp explores how we might encounter places where the frontiers of knowledge are pushed back. Her recent work uses both photography and video to approach ideas and information that stretch the limits of our imagination. For nearly two years Crisp has worked with three world-leading research facilities for fundamental science: Boulby Underground Laboratory, sited in the UK’s deepest working mine, Durham University's Institute of Computational Cosmology and Laboratori Nazionale del Gran Sasso, the world’s largest underground laboratory for particle physics, housed inside a mountain in central Italy.

In March 2018, after 18 months creating a brand new space for art and artists in Sunderland, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art will reopen with a major new commission with artist Fiona Crisp. The generous 3000 square foot space inside National Glass Centre has an initial focus on artists whose work is being created across Europe, whether made in the Alps or the heart of fascist Rome, or from the most advanced laboratories in Italy to the easternmost city in the continent deep inside the former Soviet Union. The gallery’s opening programme also celebrates the achievements of artists living and working in North-East England, who share new visions of how we live now. In each of its exhibitions in 2018, an artist will reveal a brand new body of work for the first time. *Date to be announced in the new year

Main Gallery

Illuminating Colour: New Work by Cate Watkinson and Colin Rennie Saturday 21 October – Sunday 11 March 2018 Image: Concurrentes, 2017, Colin Rennie Image courtest of the artist

This exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between colour, light and glass. Robert Grosseteste (Bishop of Lincoln 1235-1253) has been described as ‘The greatest mind you’ve never heard of’. Scientists, historians and artists from the Universities of Oxford, Durham and Sunderland have worked together to explore Grosseteste’s theories on light and colour culminating in this exhibition of new work created by Cate Watkinson and Colin Rennie. Artworks creating colour using only glass and light are shown alongside others using digital technology, allowing visitors to interact with and alter the nature of the works.

Collections Gallery

National Glass Centre Collection Saturday 16 September – Autumn 2018 This is the first opportunity to see a significant selection of work from National Glass Centre’s permanent collection. Many of the pieces have been made by international artists who have spent time working at National Glass Centre. Ralf Broeg Zero RPM Records 14 January – 20 March 2018 Dusseldorf-based Ralf Broeg is an artist whose work makes us look closely at ordinary parts of the world we take for granted. His series ‘Zero RPM Records’ are strange, hybrid objects – digital prints that pay homage to the power of vinyl records as a medium of storing sound. They are terse, graphic, abstract, images that are copies of phonographic records. Broeg takes a piece of vintage vinyl only to colour it with wax, digitally scan the object, then reprint it as an object with a peculiar power and beauty. Broeg is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at The University of Sunderland.
