Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art
The new Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art is now open! After 18 months creating a brand new space for art and artists in Sunderland, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art has reopened inside National Glass Centre, with a major new commission by artist Fiona Crisp.
Artist Talk with Fiona Crisp Saturday 21 April, 14.00 Drop-in to the new NGCA gallery and hear Fiona Crisp talk about Material Sight.
Fiona Crisp: Material Sight 24 March – 13 May 2018 Fiona Crisp explores how we might encounter spaces where the frontiers of knowledge are being expanded. Material Sight is a new largescale commission that uses photography, moving image and sound to approach the material environments where experiments that challenge the limits of our imagination are carried out.
NEPN Artist Talk with Fiona Crisp Wednesday 9 May, 18.30 – 20.00 Hear Fiona Crisp talk about her exhibition Material Sight in greater depth. Programmed in association with the North East Photography Network.

John Kippin: Romanitas 19 May – 24 June 2018 In May, artist John Kippin presents the first of two exhibitions at the new Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art. Romanitas presents 20 new large-scale photographs made in Rome since 2012. The series looks at the ‘EUR’ zone of Rome, which was built by the interwar fascist regime as its new city centre, and to make their far-right political ideas permanent. Romanitas asks how buildings and cities affect us, and how they carry ideas, echoing Churchill’s idea that “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us”. The series was begun just before the rise of far-right parties across Europe, from the Northern League in Italy and the Front National in France to Golden Dawn in Greece. We might ask: is this what our future, or that of Europe, might yet look like? Yet beneath giant classical columns and statues, and in front of sleek modern buildings, ordinary life goes on. Couples flirt, marry, and raise children. People go about making a living. And they relax, even when overshadowed by monumental follies. NEPN Artist Talk with John Kippin Wednesday 23 May, 18.30 – 20.00 Hear John Kippin talk about his exhibition Romanitas, plus work from his upcoming exhibition Based on a True Story: Works 1984- 2018, a selection of works from his forty-year archive. Programmed in association with the North East Photography Network. Image: John Kippin, detail of Unititled from Romanitas

Over fifty artists were selected by a panel led by international experts including Dr Jeffrey Sarmiento of the University of Sunderland. The work displayed ranges greatly in subject matter and technique. Highlights include Raven Skyriver’s hot sculpted and cut glass Blue Whale and her calf, Mafune Gonjo’s dress made from glass shards and a film showing the artist Karlis Bogustovs skateboarding on glass ramps.
Collections Gallery
National Glass Centre Collection Until Autumn 2018 This is the first opportunity to see a significant selection of work from National Glass Centre’s permanent collection. Many of the pieces have been made by international artists who have spent time working at National Glass Centre. The exhibition is complimented by four works by Marjolaine Ryley from Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art’s collection. NGCA and National Glass Centre are working to create new collections of contemporary visual art for Sunderland with the support of University of Sunderland, Arts Council England, Sunderland City Council and other partners. Marjolaine Ryley: Work from the series Growing Up in the New Age 23 March – 22 June 2018 The Collections Gallery reveals works from Marjolaine Ryley’s examination of “the alternative world of ‘the counterculture’” that flowered in the ‘sixties and ‘seventies. The series explores the freedoms that pioneering spirits sought for themselves and their families – from conventional patterns of work; from dependence on cash in favour of working co-operatively; and away from traditional ‘nuclear’ family structures, to live collectively. Vessels of Memory 7 July – 16 September 2018 Ayako Tani is an artist based in Sunderland who specialises in using a technique called lamp worked glass. This approach allows the artist to soften glass rods or tubes with a flame to manipulate them into the desired form. Ayako has researched the work of other specialists who have used this technique to create glass ships in bottles and has undertaken a residency at National Glass Centre, to create new work based on the same theme.
During your visit to National Glass Centre you can also see our permanent exhibition ‘Stories of Glass in Sunderland’ explaining the history linking glass to Sunderland from 674AD onwards. A selection of works from our collection are on permanent display. You can also see new work by artists Vanessa Cutler (until 15 April) and Sun Ju Lee (21 April – 3 June) in the Research Gallery.
