PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Simon Gomme
President, NGIV
Spring has sprung, and like the rest of 2020, it is not as we know it. Whilst the demand for plantlife is stronger than ever, our ability to service that demand remains restricted by our retailers having limited trading options and our growers struggling to catch up following the winter boom.
Although these factors are less than ideal, I would point towards what is happening interstate and overseas, and encourage you to focus on what lies ahead.
The impact that the pandemic is having on the public’s desire to garden is extremely positive; more and more people are seeking the benefits of gardening and plantlife. And whilst it’s hard to look beyond the right now, once restrictions ease there is a whole new customer base that will have tasted the joys of gardening and breathe new life into our industry.
Research from the UK suggests that almost three million new gardeners sprung up this year as a result of lockdown. And it’s a different customer, with nearly half of them aged under 45. Our interstate peers too are reporting unprecedented growth and sales, soon it will be our time to enjoy the fruits of a new appreciation for gardening. The significant blip that is 2020, could soon be replaced by a boom that becomes the new normal for years to come.
And speaking of normal, it’s exciting to be able to look forward to this year’s Australian Horticultural Trials Week. It’s a major event in Australia’s horticultural calendar and a wonderful showcase for what Victoria’s top breeders, growers and allied businesses have to offer.
I’ve never been in any doubt that our industry is made up of resilient, resourceful, passionate individuals, and those qualities will see us bounce back from this stronger than ever.
