COUNTY SHOWS County shows are a celebration of British farming and the countryside. These events are packed with interest, for the whole family. Thousands of visitors, from those ‘just down the road’, to foreign tourists, perhaps holidaying in the UK, enjoy our county shows – very much so. With hundreds of trade stands, a county show is a fantastic day out. The Nottinghamshire County Show is held at Newark Showground, with show jumping, horse competitions, livestock, events for dogs, plus other animals and pets. The magnificent Grand Parade shows off the prize-winning animals from the dairy and beef cattle, plus the sheep classes. The dog agility is always great fun. The superb displays of flowers and plants will interest many, too. Some of the attractions and displays vary each year, so visiting the website will give all the information required and make planning a great day out, most worthwhile. This year’s event is Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, 2014. www.newarkshowground.com
provides a fun-filled, action-packed day out for all the family. Spread over two days, the show attracts many thousands of visitors, each time. This venue has a purpose-built events' centre, with interlinked exhibition halls, meeting rooms and suites, all having the very latest technology. This year's event is Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 June, 2014. www. lincolnshireshow.co.uk The Derbyshire County Show is held at Elvaston Showground. A great number of events involve horses and all types of cattle, plus other animals. The Most Elegantly Turned Out Horse and Carriage, and the Ladies’ Hunter Side Saddle events are really wonderful sights to see. The vintage tractors, cars, engines and motorcycles, hold much interest. With dog shows attracting a lot of interest too, plus other animals and the feathered section, there really is something for everyone. This year’s event is Sunday 22 June, 2014. www.derbyshirecountyshow.org.uk

Once again the Cranmer Company of Singers and Musical Director Deborah Davies are hosting a “Come & Sing”. Last year this event, where the organisers freely give their time and talents for the cause, raised a record £762 for Tabora Village. Let’s see if the ever popular Mozart Requiem can exceed that for the work of Tearfund who are providing food, shelter, clothing, stoves and hygiene goods in Syria. One story of the composition of this Requiem is known from the film/play Amadeus. Whatever the myths or truth it is generally considered sublime: Classic FM holds the “Lacrimosa” as the mournful highlight but come and re-discover your own passion for this music this Good Friday. Organ accompaniment will be in the hands of Philip Robinson. Singers – if you wish, bring a picnic supper to have in the Church Hall between rehearsal and performance – everyone usually has a good chat. Sober dress please – Men: suits & tie, Ladies: sober Sunday best. Do please Come .... and ....Sing, or Come & Listen, you will be made very welcome and we’d love to see you there. Please contact Deborah on 01949 851030 or cranmercompany@googlemail.com if you are interested in joining our choir in 2014.

It’s a Wrap!
At around £1 for a pack of 8, wraps are a regular on my shopping list. As well as an alternative to bread for pack-ups they can be used for some delicious hot family meals and snacks. Here are some of my kids favourites...
Chilli Chicken Enchiladas
4 large flour tortilla wraps For the filling 2 tbsp olive oil 400g chicken breast - sliced into strips 1 red pepper - sliced 1 onion - halved & sliced 2 garlic cloves - finely chopped 2 red chillies - finely chopped salt & pepper For the sauce 5 tbsp passata 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tbsp oyster sauce 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 tsp sugar 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp oregano tabasco sauce to taste salt & pepper For the topping 150g cheddar - grated 2 tbsp sour cream (optional)
Method
Chorizo & Cheese Quesadillas
4 large flour tortilla wraps 2 tbsp olive oil For the filling 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 150g grated red leicester cheese 16 slices chorizo
Method
Spread the ketchup over two of the wraps, place 8 slices of chorizo on top and cover both wraps with cheese, then place the other wrap on top so you have two large round sandwiches. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large non stick frying pan, when hot, add one of the quesadillas. Fry for a couple of minutes til golden, using a fish slice flip and fry for a couple of mins on the other side. Add the other tbsp oil and repeat with the other quesadilla. Remove, slice and enjoy!
Heat oven to 180°C. Grease a square oven proof dish. Make the filling first. Heat the oil in a large pan, cook chicken, remove with slotted spoon & place to one side. Fry peppers, onion, garlic & chillies until just cooked (add more oil if necessary). Put chicken back into the pan and season to taste. Now make the sauce. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and heat gently for 10 mins. Check seasoning and adjust accordingly. Now to put it all together...add 3 tbsp of sauce to the chilli chicken mix, spread 2 tbsp of sauce on the bottom of the dish. Warm the tortillas up to make them easier to handle. Split the filling between the 4 wraps. Place the filling in the middle of the wrap, sprinke a bit of cheese on, tuck the sides in and roll up. Place the four wraps in the oven proof dish. Use the rest of the sauce to cover the wraps, dot the sour cream over and sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for 20 mins until golden and sizzling.
Samosas
Making samosas out of flour tortillas couldn’t be easier. The 7” size works best. A pack of 10 wraps will make 20 samosas. Before you start, make some glue out of 1tbsp flour mixed with 2tbsp water. Use this to stick the edges down. When you are ready warm the wraps up for 10 secs in the microwave (2 at a time is fine). When pliable - cut each in half. Using your finger put some glue down the flat side and wrap into a cone shape. Press the seam to make sure they are stuck. Spoon in your favourite filling leaving enough room at the top to seal with the glue. Now you can brush with oil and bake on a tray in the oven (200˚C) for 10 mins. Or you can shallow fry for a couple of minutes each side until golden brown. There are loads of different fillings you could use: traditional spicy potato and pea, beans and cheese, spicy rice and mince, even chocolate buttons and sliced banana!!

Nottingham library opens private garden to raise awareness of dementia A Nottingham subscription library is opening up its private walled garden to the public on Saturday 24th May to support Alzheimer’s Society during Dementia Awareness Week. The Bromley House Library Open Garden Event will take place on Saturday 24th May from 1pm- 4pm. Entrance is £2 per person. Cake and refreshments will be available as well as a raffle and dementia information stand.
Nottinghamshire University Hospitals NHS Trust
Hospital to Home – Supported Discharge Service The British Red Cross is well known for helping in major disasters anywhere in the world, we also care about the personal crises that can arise for vulnerable people within our own communities We are always looking for new volunteers. Could you help us make a difference?
The Library, which was founded in 1816 and is home to over 40,000 books, is situated in the centre of Nottingham in a Grade II* listed Georgian town house and is home to one of the few remaining city centre walled gardens. Danielle Hindle, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society in the East Midlands said: “It’s fantastic that Bromley House Library is opening up the private garden to help raise vital awareness and funds to support Alzheimer’s Society. It’s a wonderful venue and will be a great afternoon out for the whole family. It is local organisations like them that enable us to support more people living with dementia and their families and carers. We greatly appreciate their support and generosity.”

Remembering Eric…. With the centenary of the First World War approaching one way we can contribute is to take a closer look at our war memorials and ask ourselves who were the men behind the names? I chose a name at random from one Nottingham war memorial and set out to find out something about the life behind the name - William Eric Woodward. Through researching the census records, I traced his nephew living in Derby. War records, Scouting and other archives gave me a wealth of information allowing me to piece together much of Eric’s short life. Born in 1899, William lived on Gawthorne Street, New Basford. His father, a house decorator, died d ar dw oo W William Eric in 1908 and his mother took up this occupation to support Eric and his younger sister Agnes. Eric was a keen scout, joining the 1st Caledonian troop in 1909. The troop met at Blackwood camp close to the newly built Nottingham prison. A Memorial Gateway still marks the entrance to Blackwood commemorating all Scouts who died in the First World War. Eric’s sister, Agnes, later became Akela of the scout troop. Corporal William Eric Woodward, Durham Light Infantry died on the 29th June 1919 in Leicester Military hospital and is buried in Basford cemetery. He is one of 15 names commemorated on the memorial windows at St Andrews with Castle Gate Church in Nottingham. The charity War Memorials Online (www. warmemorialsonline.org.uk) seeks photographs and details of all memorials to assist them in compiling a lasting tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Perhaps you can assist this project or uncover some details of the lives behind the names on your local war memorial? © Andrew Adam

Treat revision like a job. Take it seriously.
Educational expert and author, Dr Alex Moseley offers some exam tips for students for this summer’s exams. Exams don’t have to be taxing: it’s all to do with preparation, and that involves mindset, diet, and environment.
Classical Foundations offers one to one tuition for pupils of all ages across a wide range of subjects and specialises in preparing them for exams in many subjects. For more information please e-mail enquiries@ classicalfoundations.co.uk or call 01949 861407.
Firstly, if you know what you want out of the exams, you’ll be more motivated than if you don’t know. Think about what the exams are for – getting into college or university or just proving you can do maths well! You need to think beyond them to get really motivated – understand how they fit into your plan. Then look at yourself – are you in a fit state to learn? Many pupils have poor diets which undermine their ability to think and concentrate. High sugary diets cause a temporary spike in energy but then leave you with low blood sugar. If you’re a cereal junkie, move over to porridge. Better still, increase your protein and green salad intake and avoid all fizzy drinks. Think about where you study: is it a quiet place with minimal distractions, or is it in the kitchen where everyone accumulates? You’ll get much more done – and more effectively learned – if you make your own quiet space. Use white noise (classical music or something to your taste) to drown out siblings and family conversation or background radios/tv.
Treat revision like a job. Take it seriously. You’re getting paid for it – well, not just now, but good results and getting into the programme or job you want will bring in the income later!

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Summer spells a time when most people will be relaxing and going on holiday. But this year, as we look forward to a summer of sport with the World Cup, don’t let car crime kick off. Failing to keep your car secure is an own goal you won’t want to make, so reserve this summer for scoring a win against thieves by making sure doors, windows and sunroofs are shut, locked and secure at all times. Give car thieves red cards this season by ensuring valuables are out of sight. Even something as simple as a coat or lunchbox on the backseat could be enough for opportunists to make a tackle that you won’t see coming. I’m sure that sat-navs are one of the most valuable things you keep in your car, but you can score a hat-trick against theft this season by: making sure not to leave them in the glove box, keeping them secure and on your person, and making sure to wipe suction marks off the windscreen.
that losing your car wasn’t part of your game plan. And if you’re travelling to an unfamiliar place this bank holiday, revise your defence strategy and read up on the Park Mark approved car parks which are an estimated 50 times safer than parking on the street. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of those odds? Blow the final whistle on car thieves by having an alarm fitted as well as investing in a steering lock. Don’t let thieves make you their next target, after all, it’s worth taking the time to secure you vehicle to stop losing the match in the long run. Remember to catch us at road shows events across the county this summer, where you can get the upper hand on car crime by picking up some crime prevention advice from our officers. Visit www. nottinghamshire.police.uk/ for details of where we will be and more crime prevention advice.
But doing this is only enough to call half-time on thieves. Make sure you’re a point up at the end of play by taking your keys out of the car at all times, otherwise you could be sitting out the next match because thieves have taken you for a ride. I’m sure Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? To find out more about our prerecruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials links
