Planning For Social Care No-one likes to think about getting older. It is often only when an older relative or friend is struggling to do everyday tasks that you would even think about social care. The cost of social care may come as a surprise if this is something you have never thought about. On average, residential care in Nottinghamshire costs £550 – £650 a week.
This may mean you will have to eventually sell your home to pay for your care bill. There are things you can do to plan for the future and think about how you might pay for social care for yourself or a loved one. We strongly recommend you seek independent financial advice before you make any big decisions about your care as there are several packages out there that can help you to make your money last for longer and ensure you keep receiving the type of care you have chosen.
Under the Care Act, if you have more than £23,250 in assets you must pay for the full cost of your care and if you own your own home, and don’t have a partner living there, the value of your home is included. Visit our website to find out more: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/financialadvice

a helping hand Did you know that over 200 million people struggle with incontinence world-wide? Little leaks are common for women, especially after childbirth and as we get older. But that doesn’t mean we just have to put up with them! It’s time to stop the embarrassment, and start talking about solutions. At New U, Nottingham, we are excited to offer revolutionary incontinence treatment using the BTL Emsella chair, which uses high intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to induce supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions, delivering the equivalent of 11,200 Kegel exercises in each session. This rapidly rebuilds your muscles, to give you back the control you need to be pad and leak-free. You simply sit fully-clothed on the chair – the treatment for incontinence has never been easier! Recruiting volunteer drivers!
Contact Sarah on 0115 849 2386
Local Installation, Repairs and Servicing of Stairlifts
Would you like to put your driving skills to good use by helping isolated blind and partially sighted people get out and about in your area? If you have a little time and talent to spare, put them to good use by helping others and you’ll soon reap the rewards of a job well done and new friendships made. Local charity, My Sight Notts needs Volunteer Drivers to take isolated visually impaired people who are unable to drive themselves out and about to enjoy its social groups, choir, sports clubs and other activities. Full training is provided and reasonable expenses will be met. If you’re aged between 25-70 and you have a full clean driving licence you can drive the charity’s vehicles or, if you prefer your own set of wheels or you’re aged under 25 or over 70 you can opt to drive your own vehicle and we’ll pay expenses. John Crampton, one of the charity’s Volunteer Drivers, said: “I get a lot of enjoyment from my work. The people are friendly, the charity is supportive and I enjoy a natter with the people I’m driving. It’s great to know a small effort on my part makes a big difference to people in my area.” If you’d like to find out more about becoming a Volunteer Driver for My Sight Notts, call Rachael Donnelly on 0115 9706 806 or email rachaeld@mysightnotts.org.uk

Our Dementia Choir Stars Join Vicky McClure For The Nottingham Memory Walk
Vicky McClure joined hundreds of people at Wollaton Park to unite against dementia at Alzheimer’s Society’s Nottingham Memory Walk back in September. Joining Vicky in the sea of blue shirts were six members of the acclaimed BBC programme Our Dementia Choir – Ahmed, Betty, Chris, John, Jean and Bernard, who are all living with dementia. The group joined Vicky on stage to greet the enthusiastic crowd, before singing Stand by Me (Ben E King) to huge applause. Vicky then cut the ribbon alongside John and Betty, to get the walk underway. The event was Vicky’s ninth Memory Walk in Nottingham. She is an Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society. The Line of Duty star completed the Memory Walk with her fellow singers as well as members of her own family in memory of her grandmother, Iris, who was living with dementia before she died in 2015. Vicky McClure said: “There’s nothing nicer than seeing a sea of blue on Wollaton Park! The choir members are true stars, because they are so inspirational. “We want to be in a place where dementia is getting the right funding and we’re closer than ever to finding a cure - which is why I’m calling on people all over the country to join me and many others, by signing up today to take part in a Memory Walk near you.”

Help For EU Citizens We at Europe Direct East Midlands (North) would like to provide information to help people who are applying to the new scheme designed to register EU citizens that wish to remain in the UK to live or work after the UK leaves the European Union. There are two status; settled (once a person has lived in the UK for 5 years or more) and pre-settled status (for those who reside in the UK but have not lived here for 5 years). The Government have agreed that EU citizens who are resident in the UK before we leave the European Union (scheduled for 31st October) have until December 2020 to apply for settled or pre-settled status. The requirements for EU citizens arriving after the 31st October has yet to be decided. EU citizens should only seek assistance from recognised sources of help. All Citizens Advice offices hold OISC Level 1 accreditation and can help with standard applications. In Beeston the local Citizens Advice run a Walk-in Centre on behalf of Europe Direct East Midlands (North). Digital assistance is available for those that require help and are vulnerable as defined by the Home Office. There are a number of agencies contracted by the Home Office to assist vulnerable EU citizens in person with their applications to the EUSS. A GREAT NIGHT ALL ROUND The Round House is a stunning building nestled in the Castle Quarter. Although only
a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of the city centre it feels a million miles away. Inside it's all palms and plush sofas, giving it a real colonial feel. The wooden shutters and dark paint add to the ambiance. Outside, there is a beautiful amphitheatre to make the most of alfresco dining. And of course it's all curves... Arriving on a Friday night, there was a real buzz about the place. We were seated in one of the comfy booths and decided to go for the set menu. There were about five or six choices for each course so we decided to all try something different. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Stand out first courses were the beetroot and goats cheese, mushroom and smoked ricotta ravioli and the steamed mussels. All the dishes were beautifully presented and delicious. Favourite mains were the rack of lamb – the meat was cooked perfectly and the steak tagliata with grilled goats cheese. A huge sirloin steak, not for the faint hearted! There was a choice of three desserts so naturally we had one of each. Chocolate Pandora's box was voted the winner, although there wasn't a scrap of any of them left, so make of that what you will!!! It was no surprise to hear that Head Chef, George Kalaitsidis, honed his culinary expertise in fine dining restaurants. He proudly told us that every dish is made fresh to order with local seasonal produce, with passion and dedication to deliver a memorable taste experience. With an extensive well considered wine collection, a large choice of craft beers and a tantalising selection of cocktails, you really will be spoilt for choice.

DEADLINE

Prawn Stars Prawns are a weekly staple in our house. They are a great alternative to meat and work well in hundreds of dishes. There are loads of nutritional benefits of adding prawns to your diet. A good source of Omega-3 fatty acids, they are also low in fat and high in protein and a rich source of vitamin B12. Prawns are also very quick and easy to cook. We generally buy bags of frozen, uncooked king prawns so if we are stuck for a supper we whip a bag out the freezer and hey presto! For a quick and easy supper cook some spaghetti, drain, stir in some pesto sauce, cherry tomatoes and cooked prawns and garnish with
fresh basil. Light, fresh and really tasty. For a taste of spain, cook prawns in butter with garlic and chopped red chillies and serve with crusty bread to soak up all the lovely juices. Or stir fry them in some Cajun spice and serve on a warm tortilla that you have spread with mashed avocado. Then add some mixed salad, roll up and enjoy! Prawns work especially well in Asian cuisine – and I have included a lovely light Southern Indian curry recipe that we eat at least once a month. Serve with some plain boiled basmati rice. However you eat them – enjoy!!
Ali Wale
Southern Indian Prawn Curry
Creamy Prawn & Courgette Pasta
Sticky Chilli Prawns
1 tbsp sunflower oil (or ghee) 400g uncooked king prawns 2 x onions 4 x cloves garlic 3cm piece ginger – peeled 2 tsp garam masala 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp chilli powder 400g ripe tomatoes (about 6 medium) roughly chopped 400ml tin coconut milk Salt Sugar Juice of 1/2 lemon Fresh coriander
350g spaghetti 2 tbsp olive oil 360g raw king prawns 1 red chilli – sliced thinly 3 cloves garlic - crushed 1 lemon (unwaxed) – grated zest 3 x courgettes (about 500g) – grated 50g unsalted butter 7 x cherry tomatoes (halved) 4 tbsp crème fraiche Salt & pepper
1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tsp chilli flakes 2 tsp fish sauce 1 tbsp soy sauce 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 x cloves garlic – grated Ginger – thumb size piece – grated 1 tbsp lime juice 300g king prawns – uncooked 1 tbsp sesame seeds - toasted broccoli – half a head steamed basmati rice – to serve
Make a paste with the garlic, ginger and onions. I used a Nutri-bullet but a blender or food processor will do the same job – just add a splash of water. If you don’t have any of these gadgets just chop finely. Heat the oil on a medium heat in a large non stick pan. Add the garam masala and fry for 30 seconds. Then add the onion paste and cook gently for 10 mins. Add the turmeric and chilli powder and cook for another 30 secs. Then tip in the tomatoes and cook gently for about 15 mins until the tomatoes have broken down and you have a thick sauce. Now add the coconut milk and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 5 mins. Add a sprinkling of sugar and about a tsp of salt and lemon juice. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Add the prawns and cook gently until they are cooked (when they turn pink). Serve with plain basmati rice, scattered with fresh coriander.
Cook the pasta according to packet instructions. Drain and keep warm (save a couple of spoonfuls of the pasta water). While pasta is cooking, make the sauce. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the garlic, chilli and lemon zest. Cook gently for 2 mins, then add the grated courgettes and the butter. It will seem a lot but they break down quickly. Cook gently for 10 mins until soft. Add the crème fraiche and prawns and stir well. Stir in a couple of spoons of pasta water to loosen the sauce if needed. When the prawns are pink, season to taste and stir in the cherry tomatoes. Pile the spaghetti onto plates and spoon the sauce on top.
First toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan – then set aside. Heat the oil in the same pan, cook the garlic and ginger gently for 2 mins. In a bowl mix together the chilli flakes, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, fish sauce and lime juice. Add to the pan with the garlic and ginger. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 mins. Add the prawns and cook gently until pink. Meanwhile cook broccoli and add to the pan with the prawns. Serve with basmati rice and sprinkle the sesame seeds on top. Serves 2.
business & professional The Signs It’s Time To Make A Change by Helen Jones
It’s a fact that British workers will spend an average of 3,515 full days at work over the course of their lifetime – that’s a lot of opportunity to be unhappy and discontent. Life is very short. That’s also a fact. For some much shorter than it should be. If you are feeling some - if not all - of the points below then maybe it’s time you made that change. And please consider seeking medical advice if the bad days far outweigh the good days. “We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” ― Joseph Campbell
• You dread going to work more days than you don’t: This is a real sign something’s wrong.
• People are constantly telling you to relax: Family and friends may be seeing something that you haven’t acknowledged yet.

• You are jealous of other people’s successes: Take stock and consider making some changes to give you a more fulfilled lifestyle. • You wake up tired: If there is no medical reason then your body is telling you something. Living life happy isn’t being tired all the time. • You are restless or uptight: Do you feel stifled? Listen to your body and recognise the signs. • Everyone seems to annoy you: Constant negativity is soul destroying. Recognise it and change it.
• You have a persistant sense of foreboding: Negativity breeds negativity. Stop and take stock. Lots of small changes can lead to a far better long term lifestyle.
• You keep thinking, “there has to be something more than this.” ...There probably is.

MIDSOMMAR THIS IS WEIRD
Last year Ari Aster wowed the world with his methodically crafted and deeply disturbing psychological horror Hereditary. Now Aster is back with another beautifully shot and conceptually strange piece in Midsommar, but sadly it does not achieve the same heights. Midsommar follows a group of university students on their summer vacation visiting an isolated community to see their unique traditions. Before the trip though, tragedy hits one of the friends’ girlfriend and out of obligation he invites her on the trip. High tension drama put to the backdrop of a weird and creepy sect of humanity, sounds like the perfect cocktail for Aster, or it should have been. One thing the immensely creative director excels at throughout is his use of the camera and being able to create an unnerving atmosphere through its use and the overly bright tint he puts on every scene. But seeing weird stuff happen in a pretty way can only get you so far, and how Midsommar chooses to drag out its ending makes its conclusion feel unsatisfying and kind of boring, especially compared to Hereditary’s nail biting and mind blowing finale.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD Mr Tarantino has always made it clear fans should enter with blank expectations into his films, for nearly all have made unpredictable turns in styles drawn from the guy’s current film obsession. But Kill Bill’s slow revenge drama flown down an 80s kung fu flick doesn’t come off as weird as the guy’s latest film, which explores 60’s Hollywood through today’s lens. DiCaprio plays an alcoholic film star cursing his cheap future of spaghetti westerns while his stunt double (Brad Pitt) sits by to support him. The film’s charm lies in witnessing the low-budget feel of 60s films in the execution of a high-end modern one, emphasised by the number of big-time stars included to keep you in the present while the film begs the bright dresses and poppy vinyl.
Writer: Sam Burton
OUTIH brings a very odd, very entertaining nostalgic view of the golden age of cinema. The treat of excellent chemistry and directing is well full and present, but this light-seeming film within films has morbidly dark undertones to be discovered along the bright swingin’ n drinkin’ sixties as well. Tarantino has certainly nailed a new humorous and captivating film form and another entrée in his odd marvels.

Tanya About Town Time for colder days and fright nights as Notts races through October & November As always there’s still plenty to do in and around our fantastic city, so grab a mug of something warm and take a read of my pick of what’s on... Kicking it all off of course is the Goose Fair which returns to the Forest Recreation Ground to thrill and delight city residents and visitors with more than 500 attractions - from the latest white knuckle rides to the everpopular traditional rides (2-6 Oct). The fair dates back more than 700 years and is one of Europe’s largest travelling fairs. Dating back even further is the story of Robin Hood. Join a unique, immersive experience this October at Newstead Abbey (19) taking you back to a 12th Century forest close to Nottingham. See local minstrels, artisans and characters. Eat, drink and be merry. Learn a trade or two. Meet the local man who would become a legend Be prepared for the scariest Halloween Nottingham has ever seen as Old Market Scare returns to the city for October half term. The Halloweenthemed family fun begins on Friday 25
October and runs through to Thursday 31 October. New for this year will be Horror Hotel, a live scare maze in the style of a haunted Victorian hotel. Visitors are invited to check in - if they dare - where actors, dressed as spooky characters, provide the shocks and surprises as people navigate their way around the creepy old hotel. This is a purpose built high-end maze that offers new levels of fear across two floors and where the unquiet dead stalk the halls in a labyrinthine journey towards ‘Room 13’. Join more ghostly goings on at the Ghost Walks (3/24 Oct) at Wollaton Hall, with stories of real encounters and unexplained happenings or you could join The Woolly Tellers for a night of spooky and dark tales at the Malt Cross (1 Nov). There’s also the annual Mayhem Film Festival at the Broadway Cinema (10-13) with premieres, previews, special guests and midnight screenings, the festival showcases the best in horror, sci-fi and cult cinema, through feature films, short films and special events. Dark nights aren’t just for ghost stories though - explore the beautiful illuminated trail around Rufford Abbey’s stunning gardens, marvel at the majestic trees and romantic ruins. Enjoy the wonderful music as you discover each new secret of this magical environment. (18 Oct - 3 Nov). The summer festivals may have come to an end for foodies
but now there’s Winter Fest to look forward to at Thoresby Court Yard! The event has a warming Christmas community atmosphere and has grown to be one of the venues most anticipated events. The Beer and Cider Festival also returns to its new home at the Motorpoint Arena (Oct 9-12). You can enjoy over a thousand different real ales (not advisable in one go!), two large outdoor areas, the Backstage Beer Garden, with brewery bars, food stalls and live music, and the Bolero Square Village which also offers bars, stalls and more live music! There’s also the Bramley Apple Festival to look forward to (19 Oct). Each year Southwell celebrates the origins of the Bramley Apple. The festival attracts hundreds of local, national and international visitors. A food and drink festival is held in Southwell Minster and incorporates all manner of apple-related products, fruit specialists, artisan producers and cookery demonstrations. If you’re a fan of artisan then you might want to give the Engine Yard at Belvoir Castle a visit to enjoy the hustle and bustle of market day (20 Oct/17 Nov). Expect a handpicked selection of food producers, handcrafters as well as street food vendors and entertainers!
Foodies can learn more about what they love at the School of Artisan Food. There are numerous courses taking place to make your stomach rumble, including Foraging (19-20 Oct), Beer and Cheese Tasting (13 Oct/10 Nov) and an Introduction to Patisserie (12 Oct).
Music lovers are going to enjoy the next couple of months with so much to choose from. The Royal Concert Hall welcomes Aled Jones and Russel Watson (2 Oct), Roy and Buddy (21 Oct), Will Young (22 Oct), OMD (26 Oct), Van Morrison (28 Oct), Shakespears Sister (31 Oct), Marillion (3 Nov), Adam Ant (7 Nov), Squeeze (9 Nov) and Jools Holland (20 Nov). There’s a tribute festival taking place at Thoresby Hall (25-28 Oct) and if you’re a fan of tribute acts then you’ll love A Celebration of Luther Vandross (8 Oct), FastLove-A tribute to George Michael (19 Oct), You Win Again (27 Oct), The Songs of Barry White (28 Oct) and the Elvis Tribute Artist World Tour (22 Nov) all at the Royal Concert Hall. Down the road at the Motorpoint Arena you’ll find Little Mix (11/12 Nov) and there’s nostalgia with the Stepback concert (8 Nov).
If you’d rather throw your own moves, where do you go if you’re too old to go clubbing but you still love to dance? Discos for Grown Ups comes to town at the Belgrave Rooms (2 Nov) and the Embankment (23 Nov).
These pop up parties for ‘grownups’ who love to boogie the night away were founded by ex -record industry executive Simon Stanford after finding there was nowhere to go to have a great night of dancing if you’re over 40.
There’s more music at the Theatre Royal with visits from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (15 - 19 Oct), The Sound of Music (29 Oct -2 Nov) and We Will Rock You (23-30 Nov). There’s drama in town with Prism, starting local lad Robert Lindsey (21-26 Oct) and what better way for kids to get their first taste of theatre than with The Gruffalo (Oct 10-13). This one sounds interesting - pit your wits against JB Fletcher at Solve-Along-A Murder, SheWrote, an interactive screening of the 80s classic at the Theatre Royal (Oct 28). The end of November also sees us creep into panto season (Oh yes it does!) as Sleeping Beauty begins at The Playhouse (22 Nov-11 Jan) and Cinderella at the Theatre Royal (30 Nov).
For those who like a laugh, Eddie Izzard visits the Royal Concert Hall (Oct 9-10) and Hancock & Co (Oct 14). Andy Parsons visits The Playhouse (Oct 11). If you fancy something a little quieter join the free Photo Walk (8 Sep) at Thoresby Park for
photo lovers of all ages, all abilities and all cameras! Time-keeping has never been my strong point but a visit to the Museum of Time Keeping is always interesting - catch their celebration of all things vintage and retro at Vintage Times, featuring classic cars, pre-war radios, vintage clothes, restored jukeboxes, and much more. Food will be available on site from Big D’s BBQ and Grill, with Southwell School’s Jazz Band performing in the ballroom (12 Oct).
As always, don’t forget the history right here on your doorstep. You can learn all about it while taking one of the many tours around the city, such as The Nutty Nottingham tour, the Robin Hood Town Tour, The Peel Street Caves and many more... *Always check with the venue ahead and book if necessary. There is usually a cost or entrance fee unless stated otherwise.
If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. You just need to email us at: ali@ngmagazines. org.uk by the first Friday of the month.

Janet & I run Special Perennials, our website www.specialperennials. com
Asters
We sell at Plant Hunters’ Fairs throughout the season.
STARS OF THE AUTUMN GARDEN If one flower embodies the joy of the autumn garden then it must be the Aster, or Michaelmas Daisy to give it its common name. These brilliant bloomers come in a vast array of heights from low mounds for the front of the border to stately, towering giants for the back and in colours including violet, blue, crimson, pink and white. To cap it all there are even asters that bloom in spring! The biggest range of colours and heights comes from the New York Asters including low growing ones like the “Red Robin”, through to 5ft giants. These are the most prone to mildew and good growing conditions are essential. This includes: compost-rich, moist soil and a good dose of fertiliser in the spring. The clumps should be divided regularly in spring and the small sections should be planted around 9-12in / 2230cm apart to ensure good air circulation. Cut the stems down after flowering and clear away dead leaves and mulch in late winter. The heather-leaved Aster (Aster ericoides) has tiny leaves like a heather but grows into a 3ft / 90cm tall bushy plant and is covered with masses of tiny flowers in autumn. This one also needs good growing conditions. The New England Asters like the tall pink “Connie” and the equally tall purple “Helen Picton” are generally free of problems
and tolerate drier soils. Earlier to flower and always healthy in our garden is the 2ft 6in / 75cm, “Mönch” with his large lavender blue flowers from late July into October. Asters aren’t just good for us to enjoy, they also provide a wonderful nectar source for butterflies like the Comma, Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell that continue to feed well into October. To see a tall plant of aster “Daybreak” (“Octendgloren” to give her the proper Dutch name) covered with butterflies on a sunny October day is such a thrilling sight. Some Asters give great value in the garden from their dark, almost black, glossy leaves and stems: “Calliope” is the best of these and looks great for months before the masses of small, lavender-blue flowers burst forth in October. She grows to about 4-5ft / 1.2-1.5m tall and spreads to form a sizable clump. The pale violet flowered “Vasterival” is similar in habit. Asters look great planted with autumn flowering grasses or low growing Ice Plants (Sedums) or even planted on mass for a dazzling display of colour. Oh, and that spring-flowering one? It’s the Alpine Aster and you can grow this little plant from seed – look out for Aster alpinus.

Styling wise there is no doubt as to Suzuki’s true intentions behind the Sport with aggressive and unique styling touches making themselves known across nearly every one of the Swift’s panels. Exclusive design details give the all-new Swift Sport a far more distinctive style over the rest of the range and help it to stand out from the increasingly generic crowd. The Swift’s striking front grille and bumper, impressive 17” alloy wheels and carbon effect aerodynamic under spoilers deliver what Suzuki say is, ‘the ultimate style statement’ and create a first impression that lingers long in the memory. And that’s before you take into account the bright Champion Yellow paintwork and duel exhaust pipes. Step inside the Sport and the sporting (ahem) theme continues with distinctive red accents throughout and supportive sport seats that conspire to hold you securely in place when the drive demands it and yet offer comfort aplenty for a trip down to the shops or further afield. The 3-spoke leather covered steering wheel feels great and combines well with the fully adjustable seats to give you a real connection to the Swift. A connection that improves every time you go out for a drive in the Suzuki. There’s even room in the back for three adults. You have all the technology you’d expect from a modern hot hatch and more, there’s Suzuki easy to use and clear satellite navigation system, a useful rear parking camera and adaptive cruise
control. For additional ease of use, the Swift includes an excellent keyless entry/start system which helps to create a sporting feel the moment you press the button to awaken the Sport’s rorty 138bhp turbocharged 4 cylinder engine. To keep you and your passengers entertained there’s also a DAB digital radio and smartphone linkage display which allows you to take control of the entertainment as you drive. Useful and impressive tech is everywhere and it all works without taking away from the Swift’s raison d’être, that of going very fast and being lots of fun. But what you’re really interested in is the drive, this is after all a hot hatch. It needs to offer the young and excitable the promise of excitement and practicality that the Swift Sport has always been well known for. The 1.4 Boosterjet turbocharged engine under the bonnet arrives with 4 cylinders and 1373cc delivering an exciting and impressive 138bhp @5500rpm, a figure that combines extremely well with the Swift’s kerb weight, including all options, of just 975kg. Peak power arriving at 5500rpm and 170 lb/ft torque produced between 2500-3500rpm means that this is a car in which to make excellent progress along the highways and byways. Indeed, in just such an experiment the B6451 Farnley Lane, a MotorMartin favourite with corners and elevation changes aplenty, was dispatched by the Suzuki quite
effortlessly, the engine remaining in just second and third gear whilst using all the revs available. And in this manner you get a real sense of what the Swift Sport is truly capable of whilst keeping the speeds appropriate for the road and conditions. This is a car that will cut it in the real world as well as demolishing your favourite ribbon of tarmac. Shopping, the school run and daily commute are all completed comfortably and economically with the Swift achieving up to 50.4mpg when driven sensibly and with a light right foot whilst there’s also a decent boot. Best of both worlds and then some. The price? The Swift Sport starts at £17,499 and I want one.

WHAT’S STOPPING YOU ??? You’ve hit a wall in your progress, and you’ve tried everything... ...and I mean everything. Even the fad diet skinny tea that does nothing at all for your body, except a little hydration (let’s not completely beat down on them). So, what is stopping you? Why can’t you trigger that response you had in the early stages of your journey? What changed along the way? Nothing you say, OK…. read on, this is for you. How are you managing yourself? Your mind, your sleep, your stress?
So what can you do? Here are a few coaching points I give clients:
Ever tracked these factors when in a weight loss program?
1. Make a sleep log of each night.
I’m asking a lot of questions because they need answering in order for you to “unlock the block”.
2. Record how much water you’re consuming daily.
If your stress levels have increased or your results now match your stress level capability, then results will stall. Remember, dieting and weight loss are a stress and if your day to day stress level is already high you’ve added to this with dieting. “But I can’t change this Andy”, I hear this a lot; my client’s stress management is often the reason that things slow down. Family issues, work worries, social dilemmas…these things can creep up on us without us being aware. You’ve stuck to your plan, but nothing is happening, so you cut more calories, start exercising more. What are you doing??? Increasing stress. You might see it is being more proactive, dealing with the weight loss plateau, but really all you’ve done is given the body another reason to fight back.
Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk
3. Write out three priorities for tomorrow before bed, and clear your mind. 4. It’s OK to have ME time. Go for a walk, sit in silence or go do something to break the pattern. You don’t need to train harder, starve yourself or neglect yourself mentally. What you do need to do is listen to the signs and work out…. how do I get past this block? Why not give those four pointers a try for the next week and take note of what it is that’s coming up that seems to be slowing down your progress. That’s the direction you need to take.

The e c i f f O le a T y Part Working in a small office has it’s advantages. Office parties tend to be weekend affairs. Or they used to be... In 2017 we decided to go to a log cabin in Lincolnshire. It looked idyllic and when we arrived it lived up to expectations, up to the point when Sarah realised she had a small furry room-mate. Mini – as we affectionately named her – kept popping up through the floor boards with Sarah running round at 4am blocking each hole she came through with all available objects. The game ended when Sarah collapsed, exhausted, on the sofa and Mini moved on to annoy someone else. Next day we decided to go to the local pub and cheer Sarah up with a lovely meal. It obviously wasn’t her weekend as her dinner arrived with half the field still attached to the lettuce. Trying to stifle our giggles, with Sarah weeping into her pint, the waiter offered to replace the meal however by this point Sarah had lost her appetite and we opted for a liquid lunch instead. In 2018 we decided to up our game and hired a beautiful cottage in the Peak District, with chickens roaming and views to die for. This time we had a Caribbean theme to the weekend. Jerk chicken for dinner and cocktails in the Jacuzzi were the order of the day. Cat had planned numerous party games, which to be fair I was dreading, even more so when she started to unload ping pong balls, blow up guitars and pink wigs!!
After a hefty dinner and a few bottles of fizz it was Jacuzzi time. The fact that it was mid-January with a force 10 gale rattling the windows and torrential rain wasn’t going to put us off. The first game was ‘ping pong panic’, five balls placed in the middle of the hot tub and you had to avoid being touched by any of them, however the object of the game was pretty irrelevant because the minute the ping pong balls hit the water, a gust of wind blew them all over the garden. After retrieving them, freezing my bits off, for the third time, we all lost interest and poured ourselves another glass of prosecco. The wind was so bad that the fountains on the Jacuzzi kept whipping us in the face. After half an hour we all looked like trawler men at the end of a long shift. Not quite the relaxing evening we had in mind. Bedraggled and frozen from the shoulders up, we sprinted indoors and carried on the party in the warm. The following morning determined to clear up the debris from the night before, we found the chickens playing football with the ping pong balls!! This year I have put my foot down and we are playing it safe, going into our great city for a knee’s up. Back to our own beds with not a Jacuzzi or pink wig in sight... No mice or chickens were hurt during our adventures (honest!). © Ali Wale

Walks With Emily & Friends Felley Mill Circular Walk Walk distance: about 3 miles Difficulty: Easy - Moderate (all on a well trodden path)
Keep following this path round and you will come back to the same point you turned off at the start of the walk. Follow the track back down to Felley Farm and you will have returned back to Felley Mill Lane.
Pub stop: No Starting point: Felley Mill Lane, NG16 5FT
Felley Mill is a walk in Underwood, just north of Nottingham. Despite this walk only being a few minutes from (and even crossing over) the M1, it boasts views of uninterrupted countryside and dogs can be off the lead for pretty much the entire route. The landscape was also a major inspiration for both Lord Byron and DH Lawrence. Take the turning for Underwood from the M1 and turn right when you reach the roundabout. Follow the A608 all the way down until you reach Felley Mill Road on the left (it is just by the bus stop). Follow this lane all the way down and you will find other cars parked on the right hand side - park up anywhere along here (free of charge).
To download the Ordnance Survey map route, and for more dog walks around the Nottinghamshire area and beyond: visit www.greatbritishdogwalks.com Follow us on social media for updates: Facebook: @greatbritishdogwalks Instagram: @greatbritishdogwalks Twitter: @gbdogwalks
From here walk to the end of the lane, passing Felley Farm on your right. Continue ahead on the bridleway and bear left up the hill. Follow this track passing America Farm and crossing the M1. After crossing the motorway bridge, carry on walking down until you reach a turning on the right, and continue along this path. Do note that when you get to this point this is a road (albeit not very busy) so you may want to keep your dog on a lead. Keep following the path round until it bears round to the right and crosses under the M1 through a tunnel. Continue walking in a straight line (ignoring any other turn offs) until the track comes back to a field path. There are great views here over Underwood and a few benches.

Preventing Boredom In Your Dog Interactive feeding can help meal times last longer and prevent boredom in dogs that are on strict rest/weight loss regimes/eat meals quickly, helping provide enrichment. • Messy eating: Feeding kibble in the garden or on the kitchen floor. • Treat balls/Kongs: Serve your dog’s meal in a treat ball/Kong. • Puzzle Bowls: Bowls with grooves or odd shapes cut into them. • Get creative: Hide food in cardboard boxes/ egg boxes or put kibble in a baking tray and cover with balls/toys. Remember that food used should come out of your dog’s daily allowance to help prevent weight gain from using high calorie treats. Sandpit/earthpit: If your dog likes digging holes in the garden then try building him/her their very own sandpit. This can be filled with dirt or sand. You can bury some of their toys to encourage them to dig in this area and not your flowerbed! Exercise: Exercise is really important for your dog. This should be altered to suit your pet’s age and any health conditions they may have. Things to try: • Dogs with lots of energy will benefit from plenty of off lead exercise if safe to do so. • Play with their favourite toys on walks. • Training: Practicing commands (sit, paw, lay down, leave etc) will help keep their brain busy. • Attend obedience/ agility classes. www.scarsdalevets.com

LAST YEAR I STARED DEATH IN THE FACE AND LIVED TO TELL THE TALE... Fortunately it was just a kid in fancy dress who wasn’t looking where he was going as I cycled home. That’s right, it’s Halloween. Where the ghouls come out to play, terrors stalk the streets, and the locals hide behind sofas to ward off rogue spirits. Or, more specifically the streets turn into a mass of children (and adults) in fancy dress who go door to door begging for sweets. Now I don’t wish to wax lyrical on what it was like in my day but I don’t recall Halloween ever being half the big deal it seems to be today. I think we did a bit of trick or treating, we may even have dallied with fancy dress but it wasn’t much more than a black jumper and a second-hand pair of plastic vampire fangs. I’m pretty confident we returned home with a paltry offering of a couple of Black Jacks (remember when we had proper sweet shops? That’ll be a future article I’m sure!) and half a roll of Extra Strong Mints. Nowadays it’s a full-on social occasion. Woe betide if you have children and aren’t planning on getting into the party spirit. You big old spoilsport, get yourself down to the fancy dress shop and turn your children into a variety of characters that’ll be forgotten by the morning and will gather dust until next year when the kids have grown out of them. To be clear, we aren’t much of a dressing up family. Before we had kids, if we were invited to a fancy dress party we’d probably not bother turning up. Yes, we are quite dull. Fortunately our children don’t take after us and they love a bit of fancy dress, so Halloween has rapidly turned into one of their favourite nights. But there are a few things we had to learn the hard way, so here’s a very quick guide to surviving the night: THE PUMPKIN CODE No-one talks about this until you fail, then suddenly everyone tells you that you got it wrong. Essentially, if you have a pumpkin in front of your house that’s a signal for the gangs of roving kids (sorry, Trick Or Treaters) to approach your house. So if you want a quiet life, don’t put out a pumpkin.
DON’T TRY AND BE FUNNY The kids just want their own body weight in sugar. Don’t try and make dad jokes at the door, they’ve come with a set goal and you’re just getting in the way of this efficient sweet eating machine. NEVER ASK FOR THE TRICK Again, you’ll think you’re being funny and/or clever. Remember, kids are scary. That’s why they put them in horror films to make things extra creepy. Do not, under any circumstances think you’ll get a comedy Trick. You know that old couple you haven’t seen on the street since last October? Just saying…. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY SWEETS Before you complain to me about expectations of sugar consumption (you know who you are) make sure you stock up. Worst case, you’ll have a few sweets spare as a nice reward for yourself. But most of all, you do not want to be the house that runs out of sweets. The social shame is real. And if you run out mid-group, one of the kids is going to have a meltdown/cry/tantrum/ burn your house down and do you really want to be the person responsible for that (as their parents glare at you with a cold fury usually reserved for drivers who don’t wave a thanks when you let them past at traffic lights). So good luck! Hopefully I’ll see you on the other side, just in time for Christmas!
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

kids The Nottingham Emmanuel School Achieve Record A Level Results
Fly High With Nottingham Youth Orchestra!
Despite the national dip in the number of top grades, students at The Nottingham Emmanuel School have again bucked the trend with students obtaining the highest number of A*-A and A*-B grades in the school’s history.
Young musicians find their playing takes off when they join Nottingham Youth Orchestra. Sight-reading, instrumental and listening skills improve hugely each year, and youngsters keep coming back for more. Ask them for their highlights, and top of the list are the friendships made alongside break-time cakes, the ever popular weekly tuck shop, an exclusive NYO ice cream van visit, plus residentials and musical trips out.
There were many excellent individual outcomes, with a record number of students going on to study at the country’s leading Russell Group universities. Ben Vafaei, who is going to The University of Manchester to study Chemical Engineering, said “it’s not always been easy to keep up with the demands of A Levels, but the support of teachers and camaraderie of friends has made it possible”. Derek Hobbs, Principal, said “I’m delighted with this set of results. It’s a real privilege to play a part in the success of so many young people and now to see them progress to their chosen universities and courses. We look forward to welcoming a record number of students into Year 12, from both Emmanuel and other schools, for the new academic year that lies ahead”.

NYO is having a FREE fun and friendly Taster Evening on Thursday 17th October (18.3019.30) at The Becket School, West Bridgford, NG2 7QY. Interested young musicians will get a chance to play Camila Cabello’s Havana with Training Orchestra (Gds 2-4 standard) or take to the skies playing How To Train Your Dragon with Intermediate Orchestra (Gds 5-7). Last academic year over 200 talented youngsters in NYO’s 3 orchestras and 2 jazz orchestras experienced 50 pieces of music. In the same period, more than 2000 people saw NYO’s concert hall performances ranging from Stravinsky to Glen Miller and Disney hits, plus a world premiere. No wonder Nottingham Youth Orchestra comes “highly recommended” by both parents and members. If you know a young musician who would like to play their instrument with us, please send details to: events@nottinghamyouthorchestra.org or simply visit www.nottinghamyouthorchestra.org for more information.
