Girls Football at Calverton MW FC
Have you discovered Nottingham’s best kept secret yet?
The first girls football team started in 2005, brought together by Bill Bennett. Bill visited local schools to speak to the young 8 year old girls about playing. Jo Swinscoe became their manager a few years later. Four original team members still play - Lottie Swinscoe, Amy Nuthall, Ash Kirkham and Ellie Dean. During this time, the team have been League Champions twice and runners-up in the Cup Final. Amy Nuthall and Lottie Swinscoe have also become qualified referees and are doing very well. Last season saw Lottie become the newest ‘Referee of the Year’ (pictured) and she is already a Top 20 referee in the YEL League. The girls fit their other commitments around the football and amazingly the squad boasts a British Championship Ice Skater (Georgia Robinson), and the British Kick Boxing Champion (Jade Humphries). Hannah Hughes and Alex Taylor play County Cricket too. Lottie Swinscoe captains the team and says ‘I’m totally committed to CMW and am proud to be part of such a great club. I’ve had the chance to become a well-respected FA Referee and I love football, and the support I have received from the club has been great’.
St Anns Allotments are 75 acres of Victorian detached gardens on the St Anns/ Mapperley border. There are free family friendly activities at the Community Orchard, third Sunday of the month, from 11 – 4pm • 20th January • 17th February • 17th March But watch out the site is hilly, and sometimes muddy – check the office for further access details. Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest – the next chapter: Plans for new £13m visitor attraction announced
A £13m investment plan to create a world class Robin Hood experience and protect historic Sherwood Forest will provide a major boost for the local economy, says Nottinghamshire County Council.
Around 100 people could be employed through plans for a new Sherwood Forest Visitor attraction which will also generate huge visitor spend for the local economy and vital investment for the Forest itself. The first phase of the project which includes a brand new visitor centre, café and shop to replace the existing facilities will open in summer 2014 and the new Discover Robin Hood attraction will welcome its first visitors in spring 2015. The Discover Robin Hood proposal promises: • A world-class visitor attraction to promote the legend, life and times of Robin Hood and his

band of merry men • Interactive, futuristic tourist features amid the settings of a medieval castle complete with fortified ramparts made from local materials • Free access to a courtyard offering a taster of medieval activities and a gateway to Sherwood Forest which retains its free public access • Comprehensive plans to promote the natural habitats and natural history of Sherwood Forest – led by the existing county council ranger team. Celia Brooks, Chairman of Edwinstowe Parish Council said: “We welcome investment plans at Sherwood which promote the area, but at the same time protect the forest and are sympathetic to the local environment, as well as anything which can benefit the village of Edwinstowe.”

Cafe 118 is now open A brand new cafe has opened on Burton Road Café 118 recently opened on Burton Road and is run by husband and wife team Wendy and Alistair McBain. Wendy told us about the business, “Café 118 is keen to welcome all sections of the community. We provide a unique place for customers to socialise in a comfortable and relaxing environment whilst enjoying the best brewed coffee and fabulous food.” Café 118 also provides an extensive take away food and drink menu. “We pride ourselves on providing a great ambience, convenient location, exceptional customer service and locally sourced products of consistently high quality” said Alistair. Inside a range of daily papers, magazines and books are provided along with free WI-FI. Wendy continued, “Café 118 prides itself on the personal and courteous way it serves its customers.”
The Cafe is effectively divided into 2 parts - at the front is a sandwich bar and this is also where hot take away food and a wide range of coffees are dispensed. The ‘shop’ space is surprisingly large as behind this ‘deli like’ front area is a homely sit in cafe with leather seats and a comfortable sofa area. Alistair added, “We only use the finest freshly ground coffee and fresh ingredients in our food and we hope local people will support us as we’re Carlton residents ourselves. We also have a food delivery service including quality coffee, jacket potatoes, panini, hot and cold rolls, sandwiches, baguettes, drinks and much more!

On a cold dark night nothing warms you up like a steaming bowl of soup with some crusty bread. All these recipes are easy to make and taste delicious.
Cauliflower Cheese Soup
Curried Lentil Soup
1tbsp veg oil 1 or 2 tbsp curry powder 1 onion chopped 3 carrots peeled & diced finely 250g lentils 1.2 ltrs veg stock salt & pepper tabasco sauce (optional) Greek yogurt to serve
n
k
S OU P it che Method
This soup is mild, thick and very creamy. 30g butter 1x onion chopped 1x cauliflower cut into florets 250ml milk 600ml veg stock 150g mature cheddar grated salt & pepper 1 tsp paprika
Method
Melt butter in a large saucepan. Cook onions gently until soft. Add the cauliflower and stir. Add stock. Bring to boil and simmer until florets are just tender. This will only take a few minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool for 10 mins. Add grated cheese and milk and stir. Liquidise until smooth. Place back in pan and heat gently. Season to taste. You shouldn't need much salt due to the cheese. Once in bowls sprinkle with paprika. Also delicious with crispy bacon scattered over.
Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion and fry gently for 10 mins, add garlic and fry for another 5 mins til onions are soft. Add curry powder, stir and cook for 1 min. Add carrots and mix well. Cook for 1 min. Add lentils and stock and stir well. Bring to the boil and simmer until lentil and carrot are soft (about 20 mins). Liquidise and place back in pan. Taste and season accordingly. I find no salt needed if I use stock cubes. If you want the soup to have an extra kick add a few drops of Tabasco. To serve add a swirl of Greek yogurt to each bowl.
French Onion Soup
30g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 700g onions thinly sliced 1 ltre beef stock 250ml white wine 2 cloves garlic crushed salt & pepper to taste French stick 200/250g gruyere cheese grated Method
Heat oil and butter in large saucepan and fry onion and garlic gently until browned and soft (about 30 mins). Be careful not to burn the onions. Add the stock and wine and bring to the boil then simmer for 20 mins. Season to taste. Thickly slice the baguette and lightly toast both sides. Sprinkle cheese on top of the slices and grill until the cheese is bubbling. Put soup in bowls and float the baguette slices on top to serve.

1849 Drink Driving? by Bob Massey
On the August 3rd 1846, the Nottingham to Lincoln railway was opened. Building started midway through 1844 and was completed in eight months. The line passed through Burton Joyce, speeding up the transport of people and goods to and from the village. For the first time villagers were able to work in Nottingham or Lincoln and return the same day. Trains were quick and frequent but in January 1849 an incident occurred more common in modern transport than 19th century railways. In March of that year, Alexander Ford, an engine driver with the Midland Railway was charged as follows; At Burton Joyce being unlawfully and willingly offended against the statute by being drunk and leaving the engine under his care. The case was brought to court. The first witness was William Sims who said that on the night of January 28th 1849 he was the stoker on the train from Lincoln to Nottingham with Ford as the driver. When the train reached Fiskerton, Ford said “Bill I’ll try thee whether thou can manage as far as Carlton. I am going into the break and the guard will go on the engine.” Sims then drove the train to Nottingham. At Lowdham he saw Ford but did not speak to him. Ford came up onto the foot plate but then climbed over the tender and towards the break van while the train was moving. Sims did not see him again during the journey to Nottingham.
When the engine arrived in Nottingham Sims noticed that Ford was missing and went back along the line to try and find him. He spotted him being helped along by two men one on each side about ¾ of a mile away. Ford appeared to be drunk and to have fallen off the train. Sims had been a stoker for two years and although he could drive an engine he had not done so before. Ford had a glass of gin given him at Thorpe station and had asked Sims, when they found him, to say he had just fallen from the train. Ford promised in return to make sure that as long as he lived Sims would never starve. John Bradley, the guard, confirmed that he had also been asked to say Ford had fallen from the train. He confirmed Sims story and said that Ford had complained he felt ill and was going to ride inside the train. Bradley said he did however think Ford was drunk. Mr Pettifor, the Station Master at Nottingham, was told after the train had been at Nottingham for 45 minutes. He then sent the train back to look for Ford. When found, Pettifor said that he did not think that Ford was drunk. The court did not find that the drunk charge was proved but did find Ford guilty of neglect of duty and ordered that he be imprisoned for two months with hard labour.

Firstly, Nottinghamshire Police would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year. No doubt you will have received some lovely gifts and gadgets from your friends and family this Christmas. They might include a new handbag, car radio, top of the range laptop and even some brand new clothes. We want you to keep hold of these presents and not for them to be snatched by a burglar or thief who has seen them left unattended in your car or home. You can help to ensure that 2013 is a happy new year by taking steps to protect your home, vehicles and belongings. Most burglars are opportunists who are always more likely to target a house that looks vulnerable in some way. A darkened property in a row of otherwise illuminated homes will attract attention, but an inexpensive timer switch could pay dividends by deterring a thief. Keeping door and car keys safe and out of sight is also advised. Vehicles with items on display also attract attention from thieves who will not think twice about smashing a window or
You can play your part by ensuring cars and homes are secure and that there is no temptation in sight for thieves. Please also consider registering phones, laptops, electrical items and other gadgets, particularly new items received at Christmas, on property database Immobilise. By doing this it will help officers reunite recovered items with their rightful owner. For more information visit www. immobilise.com. This year we also want to ensure that you are kept up to date with what is happening in your area. One way to find out what’s happening is by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text. It is a great way to be kept in the loop and we encourage everyone to sign up by visiting w w w. n e i g h b o u r h o o d a l e r t . co.uk.

business & IT Be a good neighbour when the snow arrives says County Council With winter just around the corner, Nottinghamshire householders are being urged to be good neighbours and help keep roads, paths and pavements clear if and when the snow arrives. And they are also being asked to check that any elderly or disabled neighbours are all right in the cold weather. Nottinghamshire County Council is encouraging people to play their part in keeping the county on the move by following the Government’s Snow Code -- which gives clear advice on clearing snow and ice safely.

chorus roundup 5th Singing Course...the best one yet!
Members of the Major Oak Chorus found out what it would be like to sing in a much larger chorus recently when 40 guys joined their latest singing course. Over 6 weeks they learnt three songs, Take Me Home, Country Roads, a Carl Denver classic; Something, George Harrison’s most famous song; and The Lion Sleeps Tonight , always a popular song with audiences.. These featured centrally in the end of course show performed to a capacity audience and received a tremendous reception. What a night! Many of the new guys commented how brilliant the course had been and how well it had been organised. The great news is that 22 of those new guys joined the Chorus the following week for normal rehearsals. Wow! Should you wish to find out more about Nottingham’s only male barbershop chorus then why not visit our website www.majoroakchorus.com or contact the chorus by sending an email to secretary@majoroakchorus. com. We look forward to hearing from you.

A Happy New Year from GEM Connection!
GEM Connection Ladies Barbershop Harmony Chorus finished the year on a high with their charity concert in November. It was a sell out and a massive hit! They raised £650 for each of two charities; Harrington Junior School and Treetops Hospice. GEM Connection’s 15th Birthday Show is on Saturday 11th May 2013 at Post Mill Centre, South Normanton, DE55 2EJ. It looks like it will be a fantastic show! Book now to avoid disappointment! Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to take time out for yourselves ladies, and either come along to one of GEM’s events or even join the chorus? GEM Connection meets every Thursday from 7:30pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. If you would like to find out more, come along to a rehearsal, sponsor us, become part of the mailing list or book us for an event, please email: pro@ gemconnection.org or contact Flin Tubby on 07545 316 986. Or visit www.gemconnection.org
Bestwood MVC Maggie’s Cheque Handover Maggie’s Centre, Nottingham were delighted to receive a cheque for £1500 from Bestwood Male Voice Choir in November. Angela Kehoe from Maggies was delighted to receive the cheque which will help the centre to continue to support anyone effected by cancer.
All Change at Grand Central
The Chorus has bad news. The Director, John Grant, has retired after taking it to two medals in two years. The good news is that he handed over the Directorship to Zac Booles (pictured receiving the baton from John) a young rising star in the Barbershop firmament. As a result of becoming the National Champions in May, the Chorus has been invited to represent Britain at the International Barbershop Competition in Toronto next year.
Rehearsals are at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15.pm every Wednesday. If you are a potential singer, sponsor, booker or just curious you are welcome to join them. Website www.grandcentralchorus.com

Calverton & Bingham Swimming Club have been involved in a variety of different galas and open meets. The ‘A’ squad has competed in the prestigious Arena League often against much larger swimming clubs. Notable wins from Rosie Rudin, Martin Cox, Olivia Wallace, Hannah Meek, Tom Roberts, Joe Wakefield, Rebecca Barsby, Tom Bates, Amber Keegan and Karl Morgan The Falcon Open Sprint Meet at Hucknall saw many CABSC competing for medals. Winning swims from Kris Moodley, Jessica Doherty, Claire Snowden, Jack Wilson and Rebecca Kirby The Major Oak Open Gala is a club targeted event. All of the counties swimming squads take part and the standard of swimming is very high. 1st Places Claire Snowden, Jessica Doherty, Heavenly Paige Gent, Jack Taylor, Jessica Moore, George Partridge The club has also tasted success in the Water Polo Pool. November saw our men’s water polo team beat South Derbyshire in the area Knockout Handicap competition. South Derbyshire fielded a men’s team with six County Level players, against our team which has six players under 18. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all swimmers, past, present and future a Happy New Year. Swimming is great fun and fantastic exercise. At CABSC we cater for swimmers of all ages from six to 60+. We run sessions every day of the week at a variety of different venues. If you have made a New Year’s Resolution to try something new or to get fitter, please visit cabsc.co.uk for more information.

Can You Help? The Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is YOUR local Air Ambulance Service and needs your help in many different ways to help keep it operational. Our helicopter and crew are on call every single day of the year during daylight hours. We average 4 missions a day attending everything from road traffic accidents, industrial and sporting accidents, serious illnesses and people who are injured in inaccessible places. Each year it costs the LNAA £1.7million to provide this vital, life-saving service and we receive no Government or Lottery funding. We rely on individuals, companies and community groups to help us reach this target. Some of the ways people can help their Air Ambulance Service are: • Donating money • Fundraising on our behalf • Joining our Lottery • Remembering us in their will • Donating their time as a Volunteer Volunteers are needed in our shops in Mapperley, Retford, Stapleford, Sutton in Ashfield and Mansfield Woodhouse to help serve customers, sort stock and window-dress. At events volunteers are needed to help set up our stand, sell LNAA merchandise and run tombolas and other fundraising initiatives. We need volunteer drivers to drive our vans to events and to deliver stock to our shops and we need volunteers at our warehouse to sort stock and donations and people are needed all over the county to attend cheque presentations on our behalf. Volunteering is very rewarding and you will be helping to save lives, will meet lots of people and there are roles to meet most abilities and talents. To find out more have a chat with the Nottinghamshire Volunteer Coordinator Lynn Jones on 0115 941 2255 or email L.Jones@ ambucopter.org.uk.
