WIN A GREAT FAMILY DAY OUT AT SWADLINCOTE SKI & SNOWBOARDING CENTRE
T
he winner will get a private ski lesson, 30 mins tubing, 5 viper slides, 4 toboggan rides & a hot meal in the Alpine Lodge for a family of 5!!
They also have the viper slide to ride down in an inflatable ring, which consists of a 70m slope full with twists and turns.
Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre, in the heart of the National Forest, bustles with activity and has so much to offer. For the budding skier or snowboarder they offer lessons on a nursery slope, and for those with a little bit more experience they have the main ski run of over 160 metres. You can book lessons or open sessions whatever suits you.
The Alpine Lodge & Bar overlooks the slopes and offers hot and cold food as well as beverages for those apres ski moments, or you can relax in the new coffee lounge which overlooks the nursery slope.
I don’t know about you but ever since I watched ‘Cool Runnings’ I have wanted to try a Toboggan run. Well Swadlincotes Cresta Run didn’t disappoint with 500 metres of exciting twists, tunnels and turns. Age restrictions apply, 4-7 year olds must ride with an adult and 8+ years must ride on their own. The Sno-tubes are so much fun, they are large inflatable rings which can be spun and linked together to slide down a section of the slopes. (Min age 4 years.)
Not too bad to say it started its life as an old spoil heap left over from the highly productive coal mining days and was transformed by John Nike who’s estate also owns many other ski centres in the UK. For more information on age restrictions please visit: www.jnlswadlincote.co.uk Tel: 01283 217200 Mon-Fri 11am – 9pm Sat-Sun 10am – 6pm

Want To Help Local Animals For Free? Dogs Trust Celebrates the Launch of Their New Nottingham Dog School Dogs Trust, the leading UK dog welfare charity, has launched a new dog school offering training classes and individual lessons to Nottinghamshire pet parents. The new school is part of a significant expansion program following a successful year for 13 pilot schools across the UK. The Nottingham team, led by Head Coach Chelsea Martin, aim to offer a fun, stimulating and informative environment for dogs to learn household manners, whilst working to identify and prevent unwanted behaviours. Of the launch, Head Coach Chelsea Martin said, “I’m extremely excited about the opportunity we have to make a real difference to the lives of dogs and pet owners. By preventing problem behaviours in the dogs we see and training for the real-world we’re hopefully able to keep more dogs with their families.” Initially, classes will be offered in Sneinton, Lenton and Thurgarton with plans to add an additional two venues in or around the city. Every class consists of five 50-minute sessions, taught on five consecutive weeks. To ensure education is affordable to all, courses are priced at £50 each with a £10 discount for rescue dogs. By offering a variety of puppy, adult and rescue dog training classes, Dogs Trust hope to prevent problem behaviours and reduce the number of dogs given up for rehoming. To achieve this, the Nottinghamshire Dog School team will: • Utilise science-based, positive reinforcement training methods in all classes • Offer affordable seminars, workshops and other events to local dog owners • Provide CPD accredited events to veterinary staff in the area

Can you spare an hour or so a week to help neglected, homeless animals? Completely run by volunteers, local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit urgently needs more rota organisers and help-line operators – and both tasks can be done from home and cost nothing. For details, contact Becky Campbell on 07522 101619 or email admin@ aaru.org.uk. Such help plays a huge part in saving needy local animals, like Edgar (pictured above) who was found, barely surviving in a dreadful, emaciated state. Thanks to the charity, he is now an affectionate, playful cat – but he is still waiting for a home. Three-year-old Edgar was FIV/FeLV-tested and is negative; he is neutered, flea and worm treated, microchipped, litter-trained and vaccinated; his new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. For Edgar’s details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. The charity does not rehome cats on or near busy roads unless indoor-only, and recommends always keeping them indoors at night, and for 6-8 weeks to bond with the new owner/home. To raise funds, Animal Accident Rescue Unit hosts monthly fairs; the next one is 2-4pm, Saturday 15 July at Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD. The charity does not cover healthy strays/ unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk

Heat Stroke In Dogs And Other Pets Andrew Draper from Oak House Veterinary Centre talks about looking after your pets during the summer.
controlled using intravenous fluids, nursing and drugs, especially if we can see the patient soon enough.
Late spring and early summer is a time when we often see cases of heat stroke and related problems such as heart failure or respiratory distress. This is due to owners being caught out by the variable weather and suddenly having a hot day out of the blue. We especially see problems with dogs kept in cars or in conservatories, where the environment magnifies the problem.
Prevention is always the best way to keep your pets safe and involves awareness from owners, never leaving pets in cars or behind glass when the temperature is very hot, always providing water, a shady spot and some ventilation for your pet. If you think they may be slightly overheating then use a water spray or wet cold towel to cool them down while providing a fan to help keep the air moving. Also never work/over exercise your dog in hot weather- where possible wait until dusk and dawn to go for your walks and playtime.
Dogs are especially susceptible to heat stroke as unlike humans they only sweat from their feet, to cool down they have to be able to pant and also be able to drink water. Signs of heat stroke can range from excessive breathlessness and listlessness through to full blown collapse and even death. Certain breeds and pets are more susceptible and extra care should be taken with elderly, overweight, dogs with pre-existing heart problems or breeds with shorter noses such as Bulldogs, but remember any dog or other pet can be effected.
Always carry some water and a bowl with you if you are exercising in hot weather and try to keep to shady walks such as in the woods rather than open spaces. Enjoy the summer but always be careful of heat stroke!
If you are concerned about heat stroke phone the vet immediately for advice and an emergency consultation, normally the hyperthermia can be

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Tackling antisocial behaviour Nottinghamshire Police recognises that antisocial behaviour is an important issue to individuals and communities. The impact of persistent nuisance or harassment can be worse than that of a single crime as due to the wider impact on a victim’s life, their health, mental and emotional wellbeing can suffer.
What are we doing? We actively work with local authorities to tackle and reduce antisocial behaviour, which can include anything from rowdy and noisy behaviour to street drinking and selling drugs on the street to vandalism, graffiti and flytipping. Through our neighbourhood teams we take a number of measures to understand and respond to local concerns by attending local meetings and engaging with community groups, and sharing the work that we do via Nottinghamshire Alert and our various social media platforms.
behaviour including advice and warnings, escalating to antisocial behaviour orders, criminal sanctions and penalty notices for more serious incidents.
How to report antisocial behaviour • In an emergency: call 999 only if life is at risk or a crime is in progress. If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, you can also text 999 with an emergency, but you have to register your phone beforehand by texting ‘register’ to 999 • In any other situation: call 101. This non-emergency number is the ideal way to report ongoing problems of antisocial behaviour • Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
We have a range of powers that enable us to tackle antisocial Find your Safer Neighbourhoods team by entering your postcode on the homepage of www. nottinghamshire.police.uk
Nottinghamshire Police are always looking for dedicated people who want to make a real difference to communities across the county. Find out more about our current vacancies at: http://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/jobs.

Everyone thinks about chimney sweeping for Christmas, but for the majority of people the best time of year to get your chimney or liner swept is in the summer when you’ve finished burning. This cleans the flue of all soot and deposits that would otherwise sit there for months rotting the brickwork or liner before you fire it up again. Give Homesweep a call on 07711 441459 or 01623 401128.

Holiday Disaster by Bob Massey
On August 6th 1857, Ann Brewster, a 19 year old farmers daughter, boarded a train at Burton Joyce for a day excursion to Grimsby. Ann was excited and looking forward to a day at the seaside away from life on her father’s farm at Stoke Bardolph. Ann’s father was George Brewster, a farmer of some 186 acres, who employed five labourers to assist with the farm work. He and his wife Mary had three children. Ann was the middle child, with an older brother, Samuel and a younger brother, Edward. The family was fairly well off and employed three servants to carry out the work around the house as well as the farm hands. George’s brother John was a well known solicitor with a large practice in Nottingham. Ann could therefore well afford this treat of a day out. The train she caught that day had left Nottingham at 6am for the special excursion and was scheduled to pick up passengers at stations all along the Nottingham/Lincoln line. It had stopped first at Carlton before picking Ann up at Burton Joyce. After leaving Burton Joyce the train stopped at Lowdham before proceeding to Collingham it’s next stop, arriving about 7am. Just beyond Collingham station the rails were in the process of undergoing repairs. On leaving the station, the train began picking up speed and started to run away, now travelling too fast for the condition of the rails. Before the driver could stop it, several of the front carriages jumped the rails on the weak section. Fortunately there were only a few passengers on the train at the time and most were in the rear coaches. Most of those on the train were isolated from each other as compartments in those days were not connected by a corridor. The noise and shaking of the train caused great fear and alarm amongst its occupants.
attempted to jump from the still moving train. She was the only passenger to do so. On leaving the carriage, Ann’s dress caught in the door, pulling her back towards the train and her head struck a telegraph pole at the side of the track. The train, still moving, encountered the now derailed front coaches one of which caught the stunned Ann with one of its wheels. This passed over her, killing her instantly. The remaining part of the train including Anns carriage righted itself and came to a stop safely. None of the other passengers sustained more than bruises. In all, there had been some 30 carriages in the train, with only a couple suffering derailment. The engine remained on the track. The other passengers were then disembarked onto the rail embankment. The guard was left in charge of the carriages and passengers while the driver took the engine on to Lincoln to report the accident and get assistance. On its return Ann’s body was conveyed to Collingham. An inquest into her death was quickly organised and held later that same afternoon. The jury, under the direction of Mr Harrison, the Deputy Coroner, examined the scene of the crash. After listening to the evidence, they returned a verdict of accidental death on poor Ann Brewster, the only victim of a holiday, sadly gone badly wrong.
Frightened that her carriage would also crash and be crushed, Ann Brewster If you are a budding historian and would like to contribute regular articles for the magazine we would love to hear from you. Please call 0115 926 9777 or email: ali@ngmagazines.org.uk

Statue In Honour of Mining History To Be Built A group of volunteers have been awarded £18,000 to create a permanent memorial for miners who died on a former colliery site in Gedling. The Friends of Gedling Country Park have won £18,425 in funding from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund to commission an artist to create a permanent piece of art in the new memorial garden at Gedling Country Park. The group applied for money from the County Council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund, which provides over £500,000 per year in funding awards to support projects that are beneficial to the local community. With the support of Gedling Borough Council, who manage and maintain the park, an artist will be commissioned by the Friends group to work with local children and community groups to create the centrepiece for the memorial garden. It will commemorate the miners who worked and died on the site and provide a focal point for anyone wishing to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection. Gedling Colliery was the life-blood of the village and its surrounding areas until it closed in 1991. The site stood derelict for over 20 years before being transformed into a country park in March 2015. The Friends and Gedling Borough Council have been developing the memorial garden within the country park for a number of months and have already installed several large metal ‘rings’ to mark the entrance – these were salvaged from the former colliery, where they were used underground to maintain the stability of the tunnels. The park was awarded Green Flag status in 2016 and a unique mining-themed large children’s adventure play area opened later in the same year. A new visitor centre is also near completion making Gedling Country Park one of the top destinations in the county to visit.

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (Nine of Wands, Five of Cups, Eight of Coins) Don’t look down! Please remember how far you have come. It’s easy to forget the experience and resilience you’ve already earned when faced with, yet another, obstacle. You’ve got this in the bag, anyway; it’s not as bad as it looks, and can be dealt with quickly. Don’t let it wobble you, create regrets or backwards glances. Keep going!
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius (Ace of Wands, Five of Swords, The Wheel of Fortune)
Don’t fight for something not worth winning. You’re in danger of letting pride force you to fight for, what will be, a hollow victory; possibly costing the better part of yourself to attain. Cut your losses on something which has become bitter and watch how quickly a new energy sweeps in to grab your attention. The tighter you hold on to something you shouldn’t, the more it will hurt you. Let go.
Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus
(King of Wands, Ten of Coins, Justice) It’s worth the risk. You want to do more, be more, have more… but you like what you already have. Is it worth the risk to strive for more, then? YES. Bold moves win more often than they lose; future dangers are not lessened by doing nothing. Play fair, be nice, take others on this journey of expansion with you, and you’re set to create a lasting legacy to be proud of.
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(The Hermit, Three of Cups, Page of Wands) Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Summer creates invitations and opportunity, and you like to be out and about. But, then again, you like to be in too. Make a commitment to only agree to the things you know you’re really going to see through. If you overload your plate you’ll feel bad, and the excuses will start, and then you’ll feel even worse. Savour the things you do; less is more.

olcino has brought Gelato joy Nottingham.
to
Based at Beastmarket Hill, the two-floor establishment serves authentic, artisan gelato, freshly made in store. Gelato being seriously flavoursome Italian Ice Cream. It is being run by gelato experts Francesco Arcadio, and his wife Kirsten, assisted by son Sebastian. The Arcadio family has an impressive history of making gelato and operating café bars dating back to 1950s in Italy. The Nottingham venture is hot on the heels of their first highly successful UK business in Loughborough. Diners can expect traditional flavours such as Cassata Siciliana (a traditional sweet from all areas of Sicily) and Pinolata (a lemon and chocolate Sicilian pastry). But Dolcino has also produced exciting new gelato flavours, including Twist on a Twix, Chilli Chocolate and Salted Caramel, and Hazelnut and Avocado. Customers who want to experiment with their own gelato mix, can ask the Dolcino experts to blend their choice of flavours to create something bespoke and brand new. There is a viewing window on the first floor where customers can see gelato freshly made every day. Dolcino has brought the Freakcone to Nottingham. Mouth-tinkling flavours, such as Black Forest Gateau, Toffee Popcorn, Mars Bar Magic, or any other combination the customer asks for – are served oozing over a gelato cone. There is also a premium selection of crepes, waffles and focaccia olive-oil bread sandwiches, all hand-made in store. Locally sourced ingredients are used where possible and own blends of coffee roasted on site.
We chose waffles and crepes. Lovely big portions, juicy fillings and to die for gelato. We had the beautiful flavours of cherry bakewell, raspberry and caramel. Our most favourite however was pistachio. Yum! The Dolcino experience is also enhanced by an Italian retro feel, with cosy booths, funky pictures of Italy, an iconic Vespa scooter and Fiat 500 wallpiece. A lot of the establishment’s equipment, including the gelato counter, a state-ofthe-art gelato making machine and the coffee roaster, has been shipped in from Italy. The upstairs is a perfect area for meetings and events. Dolcino is open seven days a week, morning to evening. It hopes to become the perfect place for an extra treat during a night out in Nottingham. Dolcino.. where every day is a sundae!!

Summer Desserts Summer is here and hopefully the sun is out, the gardens and parks look lovely and barbecuing and al fresco eating is in full flow. Summer brings a bounty of fresh fruits, herbs and salads with which to create delicious dishes. The smell of basil evokes memories for me of eating out in Italy. If you have some in your garden, how about making an easy basil pesto? – you can freeze it in ice-cubes and use it all year round. If you have a pot of chives on your patio, snip them over a salad for a subtle onion flavour. The market stalls and supermarket shelves are groaning with berries this time of year, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries - a large bowl of berries sprinkled with caster sugar and a dollop of whipped cream makes a perfect, simple dessert. Aubergines and courgettes can be sliced, drizzled with olive oil and sea salt and grilled on the barbecue. Tomatoes, radishes, sliced cucumber and spring onions are perfect for nibbling on while the meat or fish cooks on the barbecue, and salad leaves are in abundance. Dress with a little salt and pepper, olive oil and white wine vinegar for a simple side. On long sunny days, no one wants to be standing over a hot stove making puddings but we all still enjoy our desserts. So here are a few very easy to make “no cook” desserts that will impress your family and friends, take hardly any time to prepare, and make the most of the summer

Iced Raspberry Brûlées with Basil
Grilled Peaches with Vanilla Ice Cream
Strawberry Cheesecake Bites
Ingredients (serves 4-6) 225g raspberries (or you could use chopped strawberries) 50g golden caster sugar 142ml double cream 100ml custard Handful of finely shredded basil leaves 3 tbsp icing sugar
Ingredients 4 ripe peaches or nectarines, halved and stoned Rapeseed or vegetable oil Best quality vanilla ice cream Honey and sea salt to serve
Ingredients Strawberries Cream cheese Icing sugar Vanilla extract Crushed digestive biscuits (to almost a powder)
Method Divide the raspberries between 4 heat-proof ramekins, scatter over the sugar and press down the fruit slightly. Whip the cream until it holds its shape and then fold in the custard and basil. Spoon the mixture evenly over the raspberries and smooth the tops over. Put the ramekins in the freezer for about half an hour to set. Dust each ramekin with the icing sugar and then, using a blow-torch (or a very hot grill) caramelise the sugar and leave to harden for 1 minute. Serve immediately.
Method Heat the griddle to a medium high heat. Brush the cut surface of the peaches with a little oil and place down on the griddle for a few minutes and then rotate (to get the characteristic grill marks), push down gently for a further 3 or 4 minutes until the fruit starts to caramelise. Remove from the grill and serve with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sea salt.
Method Remove the hulls and hollow out the middle of the strawberry (you will probably need a paring knife for this). Thoroughly combine the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla in a bowl. Fill each strawberry with the cream cheese filling (a piping bag is best) and then dip the cheesecake side of the strawberry into the digestive biscuit crumb. What could be easier!
9 Things Not To Do At Interview Whilst there is lots of information out there regarding what to do at interview I thought I’d look at it from the opposite perspective. What are the things you probably shouldn’t do? Do Not... 1. Present your nerves: As a potential employee you need to present yourself as capable and confident. Interviewers are always aware that the situation is stressful for candidates but also expect those nerves to be under control. 2. Dominate the conversation: Some people are good listeners and others are good talkers. What we’re looking for at interview is the ability to do both. Again nerves can play a large part in personal presentation so take a deep breath and be calm. Don’t ever talk across the interviewer it will come across as rude. 3. Forget about fashion: When you’ve secured the job and can see for yourself what the everyday dress code is then you can react accordingly. For interview you need to project smart and professional in order to have a positive impact. An interview is never the right place to express your individuality. 4. Boast, even subtly: Appearing confident at an interview is necessary, but being over-confident could be a stumbling block. This can happen when candidates are referred by another employee or HR and they mistakenly assume that the job is theirs already and that interviewing is merely a formality. Mention your achievements with good grace not arrogance. 5. Criticize others: Never ever demean past connections. Don’t bad mouth about your former employer or workplace. It’s bad practice and will also flag up loyalty questions with the interviewer. 6. Start looking for perks: There’s a time and place to raise questions regarding holidays, sick leave or family emergencies. Your first interview is not the time or the place unless introduced as topics by the interviewer. Employers are not looking for candidates who ae focused on their holidays – they’re looking for candidates who are focused on doing the job well. 7. Refuse to commit: Don’t be flimsy in your responses – don’t forget that as much as you may want the opportunity it has to suit you too. Answer questions honestly and openly. 8. Be dishonest: Wasting your time and the interviewer’s by being dishonest is a really bad idea. Whilst presenting an excellent version of yourself at interview is necessary most interviewers are experienced enough to gauge quite quickly candidates who are not genuine or completely honest. 9. Fail to Prepare: Yes it might be your fifth interview in as many weeks but don’t ever neglect to do your research on a company before interview. There is so much information available on the internet that there’s simply no excuse for not finding out about the organisation and preparing some questions for the interviewer accordingly. Websites like LinkedIn and Glassdoor are a good source of background information. If you are applying for roles through an employment business such as SOLOS then your recruiter should also help you prepare for interview. Here at SOLOS we see candidates as extensions to our business and always aim to ensure they represent us well. © Helen Jones hjones@solosconsultants.co.uk

99 Year Old Gedling Resident Receives France’s Highest Honour Mr Sutton was formally presented with the award by the French Consul in the East Midlands, M. Jean-Claude Lafontaine, for his part in the liberation of France in the summer of 1944. His regiment, the North Somerset Yeomanry, one of the last horseback regiments who fought on horseback, played a large role in the liberation of France. The High Sherriff of Nottinghamshire and a representative from the French Consul presented Don Sutton with the Legion d’Honneur for his service to his country during the Second World War. The award, the highest honour the French can bestow, was presented to Mr Sutton who resides in Ravenshead at Gedling Borough Council’s Civic in May.
Also in attendance were Mr Sutton’s family, his carers and senior military officers including the Vice Lord Lieutenant. The Mayor of Gedling was also present along with Councillors and members of Gedling Borough Council’s senior leadership team.

xy Vol. 2: la a G e h t f o Guardians s w ie v e R n in DJ Bur to Play It Aga “A movie about a racoon and a big talking tree. Really Marvel, you’ve gone too far now.” Sentiments like this were heard across the world in 2014 when Marvel Studios prepared to release their first truly cosmic adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. Is it possible that the sequel could ever reach the galactic heights of the first film? Well at least we get a baby Groot out of it, no matter how this cosmic cookie crumbles. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follows the crew of loveable rogues: Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bausista) as they, well, guard the galaxy. And business is good. But when an eerily familiar brand of charm and vanity in the form of Ego (Kurt Russel) approaches the team claiming to be Star Lords long lost father, the Guardians’ smooth and easy going-ish lifestyle is bent to breaking point as the team must decide whether family is defined by blood or by actions. Each and every returning cast member gloriously slips straight back into their loveable roles. And with the origin of how the team formed now out of the way, the movie is allowed to dive straight into exploring and celebrating the quirky and funny dynamics that have formed within the team. From Drax’s pure glee in the face of utter chaos, to Star Lord and Rocket’s searing banter, it was just a genuine joy to be in the company of these outsiders once again. But, unlike the first movie, this film doesn’t seem to have any force or sense of urgency behind it. Instead we’re left floating through events with the team, and while there is no better company to be floating with, the plot needed more and higher stakes to actually get me to care about what was going on, instead of just going through the motions. One thing that never falters is the incredible soundtrack. Every song was used perfectly, never detracting from events on screen, but instead, heightening the moments they are used. Another aspect of Guardians 2 that is damn near perfect throughout is the CGI. Whether
we’re talking about how incredibly realistic Rocket Racoon looks in every frame or how the interstellar vistas and pupil dilating imagery always leaves jaws ajar; the work done in this film is nothing less than a masterclass in the craft. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 isn’t the show stopping home run that the first Guardians was. And while it probably won’t make quite the same shockwaves throughout popular culture, due to some “meh” inducing pacing and lack of momentum, I can’t deny that it was just great to be back with the team. The laughs are as side splitting as before and the characters somehow even more loveable. A space epic with heart. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2= 7/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Radcliffe on Trent Male Voice Choir
If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. You just need to email us at: ali@ngmagazines. org.uk by the first Friday of the month.
Following the choir’s successful Spring Tour to Norwich, their next venture was to Market Rasen, where they entertained a small, but very appreciative audience. They were joined by the lovely Alicia Hill, a former member of the Cantamus Girls Choir, who provided a lovely contrast to the deep voices of the men! Their Singing Course attracted a good number of new men, who will hopefully remain with them. Musical Director, Paul Hayward took them back to basics – a benefit for the old hands, as well as the new singers, arranging three new pieces for the first course session, one sung in unison, a second in two parts and a third in four parts. The sessions were enjoyed by both old and new voices. On 1st July, RMVC are singing at St Mary’s, East Leake, and again have a soloist, Matthew Glendenning, to joining them. Matt studied at the Royal College of Music, as Chairman’s Scholar and Foundation Scholar. In 2015 he won a place on the London Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Academy, and became Nottingham Young Musician of the Year. A LITTLE BIT OCD? I’m on a one-woman crusade! What I really want is to make people think before they use the phrase “I’m a bit OCD like that” or “that’s totally my OCD side coming out”, meaning that they like tidiness and order. Many people like to be in neat tidy surroundings and find neatness and symmetry pleasing but that doesn’t mean that they have OCD. Nor would they wish to because as any sufferer of OCD can tell you, it is a recipe for a miserable and severely limited life. OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and, as the name suggests, has two main components - the obsession side and then the corresponding compulsive behaviour side. It comes in a number of forms, mainly: • Checking – whether taps are off, doors are locked, etc. • Fears of germs and contamination. • Intrusive thoughts of a distressing nature. • Symmetry and order. When people think of OCD, they generally think of the sufferer with their cans and jars all neatly arranged in the cupboard, labels facing outward. But that is only the most visible symptom of the disorder. What gets completely missed are the distressing obsessive thoughts that cause the sufferer to spend hours and hours of their lives making their surroundings “just so” and the dire results they believe their failure to do so will cause. Most people will have had the experience of being just about ready to leave the house and then having to run back just to make sure they’ve unplugged the iron or switched the cooker off. They run
back, check all is ok and then continue with their daily business without giving it another thought. The person who suffers from checking OCD is unable to do that. Instead they are locked in a cycle of checking and rechecking, never able to trust their own judgement until the “ritual” has been performed to their satisfaction, restarting that ritual from the very beginning if it goes a fraction off-plan, often having a serious impact on their lives as a result. And the imagined result of their “failure” to check even worse – the death or destruction of their loved ones, of their home. One would hope that most people wash their hands after using a public toilet but imagine being so afraid of germs and contamination that even after you have washed your hands, they still don’t feel clean and already you can picture the germs swarming and multiplying on your skin and you believe the end result of your “unclean” hands will be that your family will get contaminated from the germs you brought home and will get sick and die. And that ultimately it just works out easier if you just avoid going out in the first place so that you are never in the situation where you need to use a public toilet or come into contact with germs left behind by others. These are just a few examples of the true distress that comes from suffering from an OCD illness – however, help is available if you feel your life is being ruined with such distressing and intrusive thoughts. Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT) has been proven to help sufferers retrain their thoughts away from such distressing compulsive thoughts. If this is you, why not give me a call and see if I can help?

HIIT
HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. It can be a combination of or an individual exercise performed for a stated period with short rest intervals to break the intensity up followed by a short 1 to 2-minute rest. HIIT training is designed to push your heart and respiratory rate above an endurance level creating something called EPOC, excess post oxygen consumption. It is basically in short, the body taking in more than needed amounts of oxygen triggering fat stores to be used for energy.
Here is an example of a HIIT circuit that can be performed either in a gym or at home.
HIIT Circuit • 15-20 minutes’ total time (see how long you can last with maximum effort) • 4 minute rounds – within these 4 minutes you work flat out on each exercise for 20 seconds with a 10 second rest • Each 4-minute round should have 8 x 20 seconds of exercise.
This also creates a continuous reaction for a period after exercise where the body will look to replace the depleted energy store by breaking fat down to fuel the body until the body starts to receive carbohydrates to bring the blood sugar levels back up.
• After each 4-minute round take a 2-minute recovery break, as soon as the 2 minutes are up you start the next exercise.
A little piece of advice, if you are going to use HIIT as a form of exercise to lose bodyfat it is highly recommended you only use healthy carbs to recover. Consuming refined sugar will only speed up the uptake of carbs into the blood stream increasing your insulin and inevitably leading to a sweet tooth craving.
