When you buy a new vehicle you might consider its colour and model, its engine size and fuel economy, but you are not exactly mulling over the aesthetics of its number plate. Inspector Al Pearson
That said, it is a legal requirement to display a number plate when you drive on the roads, plus they link motorists to their vehicles. Would you notice if yours were missing? Sometimes they fall off or are pulled off by vandals, especially those affixed by adhesive tape, other times they are removed by thieves. In the winter, during longer hours of darkness, many of us are setting off to work in the dark and leaving work in the dark. I managed to get to the shops in daylight the other week and suddenly realised how dirty my car was, never mind if everything was accounted for. It’s worth making a quick check of your number plates — remember there is one on both ends — before you set off anywhere in your vehicle. If you think someone has stolen your number plate, report it to police immediately. To better protect your number plate you can use ‘clutch’ or ‘nonreturn’ screws, which means they cannot be unscrewed once secure. Motorists can also buy number plates to a ‘Sold Secure’ standard, in which the number plate breaks if tampered with and is therefore unusable. Be vigilant around vehicles and report any suspicious activity to police.
On the subject of vigilance, I’d like to encourage you to be aware of what’s happening in your neighbourhood. As much as we try, police officers can’t be everywhere at once. You are best placed to notice any irregularities or suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. If you detect the distinctive smell of cannabis coming from a nearby house or car, or suspect someone of being involved in illegal drugs contact us at the station or call Crimestoppers to ‘Rat on a Rat’. Your information will be treated in the strictest confidence. Following reports of groups gathering and drinking alcohol in Farnsfield Avenue, and vandals cutting the tops off trees in Church Road, both in Burton Joyce, I encourage you to tell us about the culprits of antisocial behaviour and damage. The NG14 postcode means we are lucky enough to be living in some of Nottinghamshire’s lovely rural villages. While this has its perks, criminals sometimes take advantage of our more isolated location. I’d just like to remind you to lock the doors of your homes, even if you are in, and don’t leave open windows unattended. Do not let anyone you do not know into your home, always check ID and double check it with the company they claim to be working for. Install and use burglar alarms where possible. Security mark your property and register it online with a service such as www.immobilise. com Don’t forget to extend this security to your garages and sheds, as well their contents. Report any suspicious activity to Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Hello Ladies, A belated Very Happy New Year to you all! As I am writing this column there are about 4 inches of snow on the ground and it’s still coming down! Hopefully by the time this goes to print, Spring will be well and truly on its way and the shops will be filling up with lovely pretty Spring/Summer fashion. According to catwalk trends and all the glossy mags there is going to be plenty of vibrant colour out there to buy and all sorts of lovely striking patterns. Pretty much any colour and any pattern are now being put together in fashion. I have to say I do love that there are hardly any “Taboo” rules any more. I remember very clearly when it was unheard of to mix certain colours in an outfit or totally mix patterns .... spots and flowers together. Stripes and checks, anything seems to go. I think fashion has become a lot more fun! The catwalks also have a lot of iridescent and lurex going on - I’m not sure that will be quite so popular with us in the real world but you never know. One thing I have noticed in Boutique 11 is that there seem to be a lot more ladies coming in wanting to try something new, a different style than they have been wearing or a different colour which I think is wonderful.
I know that I say it all the time but fashion should be fun and you should experiment a little, you can always go back to something similar if you don’t feel comfortable, but at least try. One of my customers said to me “Boutique 11 is funking up Mapperley Top” I love it! For me personally the hardest item of clothing to buy is a dress. Like many of you, I’m not the same dress size on the top as the bottom. It really is quite frustrating trying to find a dress that fits a 12 top and 14/16 bottom! Just after Christmas I went cocktail dress hunting .... after trying on 35 dresses (yes, I counted them) I came home totally deflated! I had to rethink the whole cocktail party thing and ended up in some fabulous black palazzo trousers, black, gold and silver glittery top, gold and silver shoes...gorgeous! I think what’s really important is not to force it. You have just got to go with what’s good for your particular body shape. Remember have fun with it! Happy Shopping! Penny, Boutique 11 0115 960 2006 P.S.Dont forget to keep an eye out for Boutique 11 “In store Ladies Evenings” The next one is Thursday March 7th 5.30 to 8pm...All welcome. Calverton 1849 by Bob Massey The local paper of January 18, 1849 had Calverton in the news. Local crime and tragic events were news and this day Calverton appears to have had its share. On the Sunday previous Mr C. Beckitt, a local Calverton farmer, was riding his horse on his way home from a trip. He had been to Mansfield and was approaching home at about 8pm. Upon reaching Burnt Stump Hill adjacent to the Fox and Hounds Inn he was approached by three men. These men barred his way and pulled him from his horse. They went through his pockets and stole sixteen shillings before running off. Mr Beckitt was left lying in the road. Although shaken and bruised Mr Beckitt was otherwise unharmed. The men in their hast had not taken all his money and with his remaining funds he restored his spirits in the Fox and Hounds before continuing on his way back to Calverton. The night before Mr Beckitt was robbed Calverton farmer, Mr Richmond, was also about to make the news when his house was burgled. Theives removed a downstairs window frame. Sash windows at this time were easy to remove as this was the usual way of getting furniture into the house, especially on the upper floors. After removing the windows the thieves raided the kitchen area and stole 3 sides of bacon, 4 hams, 1 chop, 2 chine’s, a quantity of sausages, 3 eggs, 1 stone
of bread, half a new milk cheese, half a blend milk cheese, 4 pounds in weight of candles, a pork pie, 3 gallons of ale and a pot of full cream. They abandoned some of their takings in the local stock yard, got away and were never caught. It’s a wonder since they must have gained a considerable amount of weight from eating that lot! How long did it take them? and how did they transport it all I wonder, with out being spotted? A further tragedy reported in the same edition of the paper might hold the key to explaining these crimes. On the same day Mr Richmond’s house was being robbed, an inquest was being held into the death of the 3 year old child of Thomas and Priscilla Rose of Calverton. It appears that the mother found the child dead when she woke in the morning. They had spent the night sharing the same bed and it was concluded that the child had died as a result of the mother accidentally laying over her in her sleep and suffocating the child. It is possible that those who robbed Mr Richmond had taken advantage of the fact that most of the village were at the inquest of the poor Rose girl. Had these been the same three men who attacked Mr Beckitt and robbed him after failing to find money at the Richmond house? We will never know.
If you are a budding historian and would like to contribute regular articles for the magazine we would love to hear from you. Please call 0115 926 9777 or email: info@ng5.org.

Spring into Action

don’t let Moss take over your lawn The record setting wet and inclement weather of 2012 has taken its toll on lawns throughout Britain, including those in Nottingham East region. From excessive moisture to compacted soil, many lawns are in need of attention. Spring is the most important time of the year to take care of your lawn. Neglecting to treat your lawn during the spring can cause issues for the rest of the year. This advice is particularly important following the recent wet weather. As a result of the excessive rain, lawns will have become saturated creating a perfect breeding ground for moss. Mosses are resilient and versatile non flowering plants that are, for many, the worst of all lawn problems. Left unchecked, moss will increase, reducing the ability of the grass to thrive and will eventually ‘choke’ out the grass completely. To successfully remove a moss problem, it is important to identify the primary cause and remove it or reduce its impact. Not only can excessive moisture be a cause of moss, there could also be an underlying issue with your lawn. Additional causes of moss can include excessive thatch, the grass being left to grow too long during winter, poor drainage, shade and compacted soil due to heavy use. But do not worry there is a solution; moss can be combatted. The most effective method, while providing the best value for money, is to contact your local lawn care expert, who has the experience, techniques and tools to tackle the moss quickly and effectively. Greensleeves, the national lawn treatment company, has a programme designed to maximise the effort against moss and reduce its impact as much as possible. The treatment programme begins with an on-site evaluation of the turf and current moss conditions. Depending on the severity of current moss, your local Greensleeves lawn care expert will recommend a treatment plan to bring your lawn back to life. Greensleeves will treat the moss problem with their range of specially formulated products and professional equipment. They will not only
act to combat the moss but will also apply a specialist lawn feed which will encourage the turf to thrive. If required, they will then remove the dead moss from the lawn by scarification. Scarifying is a process which involves a mechanical raking of the lawn using a specialist machine which has sharp tungsten blades that rotate at high speed and cut into the turf in a vertical manner. The process of scarification removes the moss along with any excess thatch from a lawn giving the grass plants the opportunity and space required to grow. This will help the turf to withstand any future moss invasion. Additionally, your lawn can at this stage be over seeded if required to fill in any bare patches left by removing the moss. Re-seeding involves the scattering of new lawn see over your existing lawn to help fill damaged or thinned areas. Greensleeves will also assess your lawn to establish whether it will benefit from being aerated. Hollow Tine aeration can dramatically improve the condition of the soil and therefore has a direct impact on the health of a lawn. The process involves a professional aeration machine which removes plugs from the soil at intervals to reduce compaction and therefore improve the drainage and soil conditions; again helping the grass to flourish and ensuring adequate drainage to reduce the moist conditions in which moss thrives. It is important to remember that no matter what condition your lawn is currently in with a little help from the professionals it can be transformed. With their expert knowledge and professional range of equipment and treatment plans, Greensleeves is the lawn care company that you really can rely on. For further information or to book a Free, no obligation quotation please contact your local Greensleeves lawn treatment expert; John Sansum on 01159 280687 or visit www.greensleeves-uk.com.

TEN TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS!
Calverton & Bingham Swimming Club Presentation Evening 2013 The annual CABSC presentation evening took place at Nottingham Cricket Club in the Derek Randall Suite. The event is usually very well attended and this year was no exception. It was standing room only – even the cloakroom was full. All CABSC swimmers who finish in the top six at the club championship received a commemorative plaque and all others received a certificate as a record of their efforts.
WLMAN
JOSH DO
As well as the swimmers, the evening is an opportunity to acknowledge all the volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year to keep the club running smoothly. Many of the volunteers spend hours each week on various pool sides and provide help and support to the club’s coaches and swimmers. Without their fantastic enthusiasm, the club wouldn’t be able to exist and everyone connected to the club appreciates their effort.
This left only one award left to present – the Swimmer’s swimmer of the year. The club’s coaches nominate swimmers for the award. The club’s swimmers then vote. The winner this year was Jess Moore After the awards ceremony, Kath Needham (Chairperson) announced that the buffet was open. The swimmers attacked the buffet like a pride of lions devouring a herd of wildebeest. I would like to report that their plates were full of fruit, vegetables and complex carbohydrates although I don’t know which group pringles and sausages on sticks fit into. All that was left was the disco. Many weird and wonderful shapes were thrown and Handbag led a conga around the room. The music played on and everyone had a wonderful time
It’s the start of a new year and for those with children in Year 9 (or year 8 at some schools) there begins the nail biting process of choosing the subject options that they will see through to their GCSEs or equivalent in Year 11. So the team at Arnold Hill Academy in Nottinghamshire have put together their top tips for parents to help them support their children at this important stage of their school career.
1. Check out which subjects your child really enjoys. Enthusiasm is a powerful motivator. 2. Take a look at your child’s progress. Doing well in a subject is a sign that your child is quite happy to meet the challenges of further study in that area. 3. Encourage your child to talk to their teachers or go for a chat yourself. They can give advice on what the course entails and whether it suits your child’s particular talents 4. But make sure that your child is not planning to choose a course based on their current subject teacher. 5.The same goes for friends’ choices. Keep an eye on decisions based upon friends’ options choices and influence. 6. Take a close look together at how the course is structured. Look at the balance of exams and assessment for each course and check that this suits how your child works best. 7. In fact balance is a good theme to follow. Your child’s choices will ideally represent a good variety of subjects that will keep their options wide open for the future. 8. If your child has ideas about what they might want to do as a career, then take a look at which subjects will best support them in this endeavour – it all helps! 9. Beware of falling into the pushy parent trap! Be open-minded about the paths your children will walk and embrace their talents! 10. Talk to the school about how they keep an eye on your kids as they start this new journey.

Can You Help Hayley?
Volunteers Needed in Your Community My name is Hayley, I’m 24 and I have Asperger’s Syndrome. Despite this I have gone on to study my MSc in Forensic Mental Health at Nottingham Trent University.
My sight Nottinghamshire, are looking for people who are: great listeners, friendly and committed to join our Volunteer Home Visiting Team. My sight Home Visitors help to support visually impaired people who live in your community by visiting them once a week for short walks, reading mail or just a cup of tea and a chat. Not only will this be an opportunity for you to help reduce the social isolation that can affect many visually impaired people, but you will also get the chance to meet new people, help your community and use your own people skills. If you’re interested in becoming a Home Visitor or if you would like any more information, then please contact us on: 0115 9706806.

I am trying to prove that people on the Autistic Spectrum can still achieve. One area in which I lack is self-confidence, so alongside other Trent students I have signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in August 2013 for Child Reach International. In order to take part in the trek I have to raise £2450 for the charity. Child Reach International is a grassroots charity that has three main aims: to improve children’s health, education and human rights and protection. In 2010, they increased access to education for 40,694 more children, 23,330 more got health care and 4,868 more were kept safe. Child Reach International uses some of the money raised to fund the trip but at least 50% goes directly into the charity. To help support me and the charity donations can be made at: https://mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/hayleypykett or a £3 donation can be made by texting: UNLOCK 109544 to 70007.

Could you picture someone else in your family? A new campaign was launched in January to recruit an army of local carers to support adults who need help to live independently. Shared Lives, which is being run by the County Council, aims to recruit carers from across the county to help support people with physical or learning disabilities, older people or mental health needs. All carers will receive training and ongoing support and will be paid depending on the needs of the person or people they care for. Shared Lives is looking for carers who can provide a range of support: • Long term accommodation and support: people who have room in their home and are willing to have someone to live as part of their family for some time. This may be months or years. • Short breaks: people who can offer a short break for someone while the people who normally support them are having a holiday or have to be away.
• Regular short-term support: people who can offer support in the day to promote independence and help people become part of their community. Councillor Kevin Rostance, Chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “We are looking for caring people who have some time and space in their lives to help an adult. You may be a retired person who has room in your home; a parent who has spare time in the day or someone who works in the week, but has evenings or weekends free. “Shared Lives is a vital scheme which will help older or disabled people to experience ordinary life with real relationships. Please get in touch if you think you can help.” Anyone who is interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer can visit www.nottinghamshire.gov. uk/sharedlives, email: sharedlives@nottscc. gov.uk or phone 0300 500 80 80.

pets Severely injured young cat rescued by local animal charity
Approx 2000 healthy animals are put to sleep every week in the UK Low cost speying & neutering schemes for pets available in the Nottingham area Helen@preventunwantedpets.co.uk reg charity: 702569
Help in paying for treatment for a young cat called Belle, who has severe injuries, is being sought by a Nottinghamshire charity. Belle was found straying in Nottingham before being taken to a vet practice. Experts believe her injuries are consistent with having had boiling water poured on her – possibly deliberately – thus severely damaging her skin. The vet practice called local animal charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit (AARU), which has agreed to pay for five month old Belle's treatment and to find her a home. The treatment costs are already mounting to hundreds of pounds. With a long road of treatment ahead of bathing, painkillers and antibiotics, AARU is appealing to the local community to help. Robina Varley from the charity explains: ‘Despite her injuries Belle’s doing well and is an affectionate and trusting cat. Her wounds are open and sore so she’s being bathed daily, she’s on constant pain relief but coping well. We’re committed to providing whatever treatment and care she needs.’ Belle is being fostered locally but will eventually need a new home. If you want to help this poor cat, please visit AARU's website at www.animalaccident.org.uk, email: admin@aaru.org.uk or call 0115 931 4274 on how to donate and to find out about rehoming. All other calls to the charity must be made using its Lifeline number 0115 932 1555.
