Something for all ages! Drayton Manor Park & Zoo is a theme park resort in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Built in 1949, the park covers 280 beautiful acres of lakes and parkland, and is packed with great rides and attractions. A family run business since George & Vera Bryan OBE first purchased the home of the former Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel (famous for starting the police force) and opened it up to the public in 1950. Today, the park features some of the biggest, wettest and scariest rides around, a zoo with over 100 species from around the world, a 4d cinema and a number of arcades. There are plenty of rides for everyone from the ever popular Thomas Land™ boasting a multitude of great rides for the little ones to the more daring Shockwave, Maelstrom & Apocalypse, with its 54 metre plummet to Earth which can be done seated or standing, be prepared to scream! In between these rides there are plenty of favourites for the whole family that bring back nostalgic memories from my childhood including the Flying Dutchman, The Big Wheel & the Buffalo rollercoaster. To top it all off you can stay on the campsite or enjoy a stay in the lovely Drayton Manor Hotel, which has 15 Thomas & Friends™ themed rooms. We visited as a family of five, including little ones, teens and adults. We spent the whole day there, with plenty to keep us all busy and entertained. We could have done another day. Opening hours can be found on the website but generally the park opens at 9.30am, rides start at 10.30am & close at 5pm. We could see why they have 1.5 million visitors each year. Vaccination of Pets The vaccination of our pets greatly improves their health and longevity. Some horrible diseases like Feline Enteritis and Canine Distemper are now thankfully extremely rare. Others such as Cat Flu and Canine Parvovirus are mainly seen in unvaccinated animals. Outbreaks of contagious illness such as Canine Kennel Cough and Myxomatosis in rabbits can be limited by vaccination. Generally your dog, cat, rabbit or ferret requires an initial primary course of inoculations as a youngster and then an annual booster throughout it’s life to maintain it’s protection. As your pet gets older it’s immune system is less efficient and it is more important to keep him or her vaccinated.
In these times of potential hardship owners are often tempted to not vaccinate their pets or let their boosters lapse but this can be a false economy and potentially life threatening to your beloved. To help clients with this many practices have schemes to help you spread out the cost of routine health care such as our Pet Health Club, which gives you the option to pay a monthly direct debit to cover the costs of routine health care such as vaccination, flea and worm control. To find out more check with your practice or check their web site for details. © Andrew Draper, Senior Vet, Oak House Veterinary Centre
Importantly alongside his annual booster your pet will also get a thorough health check when any other problems, such as early heart or dental disease, can be picked up and treated. It is also an ideal time to check that your pets worming and flea control is up to date.

What an enchanting restaurant! I was hooked from the minute I stepped out of the car. From the amazing smells wafting through the air, right through to the flaming puddings that were cooked at the end of our table! We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon with the whole family (6 of us) and were greeted by the authentically dressed staff who really looked after us. Suraj, the manager, who has a great rapport with customers, was very helpful when we were trying to decide what to order. The restaurant itself is traditionally Indian, decorated with vibrant colours & fabulously colourful pictures. It boasts beautiful lakeside views with amazing sunsets - very romantic. We chose the Sunday special; a selection of 5 starters and 5 mains with accompaniments for £19.99 each and Suraj kindly offered to do our daughter a veggie version, which she loved. The other starters were a delicately spiced Malai Chicken (£6.95) and Samosa Chaat (£5.95) which was amazing. For mains, the kids had Chicken Korma (£11.95) and to accompany their dishes they had nan and pilau rice (around £3.50 each). All in all the food was delicious and beautifully presented, especially the starters with their hollowed out tomato lanterns! A palette cleanser of mango sorbet was served between courses and the hot towels are a wonder to behold! I’m not going to spoil it but they need to be seen to be believed. We managed to squeeze in three puddings and boy are we glad we did! We chose; pistachio kulfi served in a spun sugar basket (£4.95), crepes suzette (£7.95) and pineapple flambe (£7.95), both of which were cooked right there at our table, flames & all. Overall a truly magical journey with delicious food, a live pianist and wonderful surprises along the way. If you are looking for something extra special, Mewar Haveli is the place to go. We will definitely be returning and the sooner the better.

Spring I love the onset of Spring. As the evenings draw out and the nip in the morning air recedes a little, everything starts to come to life. From blossom on the cherry trees to the new born lambs, Spring heralds the opportunity of a new year and the inspiration for lighter dishes and fresh seasonal ingredients. As early Spring begins to turn to summer there is a wealth of produce to choose from with rhubarb, new potatoes, oysters and leeks in March, to wild garlic, sea bass, crab and spring lamb in April to asparagus, artichoke, mint and mackerel in May, the list is endless. Springtime sees a flurry of festivals and special days, some dating back many hundreds of years, others more modern – from the well-known such as Mothering Sunday, Shrove Tuesday and, of course, Easter, to the less well-known such as “hare pie scrambling” in Leicestershire, cheese rolling and eel throwing in Cambridgeshire and the “Obby Oss” dance festival in Padstow. Well, as spring is in the air and the weather is warming, here are a few of my favourite springtime ingredients in recipes that won’t leave you slaving over a hot stove all day. Traditionally, it was considered best to enjoy oysters when there is an “r” in the
month, this is because the sea is cooler in the northern hemisphere and the oysters are not spawning, in truth, with modern storage methods this is less important. Still, if you are a proper “ostreophile” (oyster lover) you might want to hold with this tradition. Personally, raw oysters with a shallot vinaigrette suit me just fine, but for those who prefer their oysters cooked, try throwing them on the first barbecue of the year and serving them with garlic, parmesan and paprika. Spring wouldn’t be spring without lamb for most of us, especially at Easter, but how about ringing the changes a little and put yourself in the mood for your summer holidays with a Greek inspired roast leg of lamb with lots of oregano and olives. To follow, try the new season’s rhubarb, Yorkshire forced rhubarb, grown in the dark and harvested by candlelight will be in the shops from January, but our local Nottinghamshire produce will be in the shops by March. Of course, you can’t beat a good rhubarb crumble but how about something a bit lighter for spring? Try this spiced rhubarb with yoghurt recipe for a lighter alternative, and a great way to use up those leftover Christmas dates!

Barbecued Oysters with garlic, paprika and Parmesan butter If you prefer your oysters raw, try serving with a simple red wine and shallot vinegar (peel and finely chop shallots, mix with a good quality red wine vinegar and leave to infuse for 1 hr). If you prefer your oysters cooked, impress your guests with this flavoursome recipe for the first barbecue of the year! Ingredients Serves 4 12 oysters (ready shucked unless you really know what you are doing!) Chunks of good bread to serve For the butter 60g butter, at room temperature 1tsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1tsp cayenne pepper 2tsp smoked paprika 1tsp onion powder 50g Parmesan, grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed Method (heat the barbecue until the coals are white) In a small bowl, beat the butter until soft, then add all the ingredients and mix well. Lay a piece of cling film out on a clean surface. Spoon the butter into the centre then roll into a sausage shape and seal tightly. This will keep in the fridge for up to a week. Slice a round of the butter and place on top of each oyster. Place (shell down!) on the barbecue and grill for approximately 6 mins or until bubbling. Serve with some “proper bread to mop up the juices.
Greek inspired Roast Lamb Ingredients 1 large leg of Lamb (about 3kg) 6 garlic cloves 1 large bunch fresh oregano (you could use dried if necessary) Zest and juice 1 lemon 6 tbsp olive oil New potatoes (approx 4 per person) 400g can chopped tomatoes Large handful pitted Greek olives, chopped Method (pre-heat oven to 240C) Pound the garlic, half the oregano, lemon zest and a generous pinch of salt in a pestle and mortar, then add the lemon juice and a slug of olive oil. Stab the lamb all over with a sharp knife, then pat the mix all over the lamb leg, pushing as much of the herb paste into the slits as possible. Toss the new potatoes in the remaining olive oil & herb paste and place in the roasting tin around the lamb. Roast for 20 mins then reduce the temperatures to 180C. Roast for 1hr and 15 mins for medium-rare, adding another 15 mins for medium. Baste the lamb once or twice with the juices and turn the potatoes. When the lamb is done, remove from the tin and allow to rest. Throw the rest of the oregano in with the potatoes and keep warm. Place the roasting tin over a medium heat, add the canned tomatoes and chopped olives to the pan juices, then simmer for a few mins, add a pinch of sugar if the tomatoes are a little bitter. Serve the lamb with the potatoes and sauce and a simple salad. Side Salad Mix 100ml olive oil with 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar and a pinch of salt. Finely shred 2 Cos lettuces and slice 6 spring onions. Crumble over approx 100g feta cheese. Toss everything together with freshly ground black pepper just before serving.
Roasted Spiced Rhubarb with Dates and Yoghurt Ingredients - Serves 4
Roughly 28g unsalted, shelled raw chopped pistachios or flaked almonds 50g dates, pitted and chopped 2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest Half teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons runny honey 1 tablespoon caster sugar 3 large rhubarb stalks cut into 2 inch pieces Quarter teaspoon cinnamon 140g natural Greek Yoghurt Method (pre-heat oven to 170C) Gently toast nuts in a dry frying pan tossing frequently until golden brown. Cool and chop. Place dates, zest, vanilla, 1 tablespoon of the honey (and sugar to taste) and roughly 200ml water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently until dates are very soft and liquid is reduced by about a half – 8-10 minutes. Place rhubarb in a small baking dish and toss with cinnamon and the date mixture, then place in the oven and roast for approximately 25 mins (turning halfway through) until rhubarb is tender but still holding its shape. Whisk the yoghurt together with the remaining 1 tablespoon of honey in a small bowl, serve with the spiced rhubarb and juices on top and sprinkle with the pistachios.

Derailed
by Bob Massey On 7th September 1846 a train was travelling along the new Nottingham to Lincoln railway. Being on a local line it was a mixed arrangement consisting of engine, tender, 2 or 3 trucks, several passenger carriages and a guards van.
on the line, while the passengers got help and horses from the surrounding area to help pull the tender from the engine and remove Glover.
It had left Nottingham on time at 12.10 pm and travelled for 20 minutes at 24mph before arriving at Lowdham station. On leaving Lowdham on the part of the line near Gonalston there was a loud bang and the engine shuddered and oscillated. The train then appeared to lift off the rails and jump up and down. The crew in the cab consisted of the stoker or fireman, 26 year old Henry Glover and the driver, Samuel Hicton from Lincoln. Both were very experienced railway men. Besides the train crew, there were about 30 passengers in the carriages. As soon as the bang happened, Hicton shut off the steam. The engine however, left the rails and ran down a small incline for about 10 yards before resting on its side. Hicton was thrown from the engine and landed on the bank suffering only bruises. When the engine left the track it took the tender with it, but the action broke the link between it and the first truck, which was loaded with iron scrap and remained on the rails. The engine and tender jack knifed and folded together. Unfortunately Henry Glover had been getting coal from the tender at the time of the accident and was thrown against the edge of the tender falling down the gap. So when the engine and tender fell, he was trapped by the thighs between the two. As the rest of the train had stayed on the track the passengers in the coaches suffered only cuts and bruises and quickly left the train. They found that Glover was trapped and they could not remove him from the wreck. The guard, Charles Ward, ran back to Lowdham to stop other traffic
All this took at least 30 minutes and Glover was then immediately removed to the General Hospital. His injuries were found to be very bad and as they were in the region of his upper thighs he could not be operated on. Sadly, he died some nine hours later. Glover left a wife but no children. At the inquest, held on the 11th September at the General Hospital, it was found that a major spring suspension had broken causing the engine to shudder and jump and so leave the track. The train had been travelling at about 18 mph at the time and this, coupled with the tender truck linkage breaking, saved the rest of the train from derailment and far more injuries to the passengers. The reason for the breakage was unknown. The track was in very good condition and no sign of obstruction on the line was found. It was all put down to “the deceased being accidentally killed by an engine being thrown off the line caused by the breaking of a spring attached to the fore wheel which was apparently defective. Glovers wife was at least able to claim compensation for her husbands death as the compensation act of 1846 had come into force just one month earlier.

Spring Into Safer Living As we enter Spring, it’s important to be aware of opportunist thieves, who may take advantage of your vacant home and enter through any doors or windows which have been left open in the warm weather. You will need to know how to stay safe in the Spring and be aware of the steps you can take to protect your property. Lock your doors and windows: Whilst it’s tempting to keep doors and windows open to make the most of the fresh, spring breeze, this is a perfect opportunity for thieves to enter your home and remove any valuable goods. Make sure you lock your doors and windows before going to bed or leaving the house. Security outside your home: Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property. Visible burglar alarms and carefully directed security lighting can deter burglars. Make sure alarms stop sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t disturb your neighbours.
most of the Bank Holidays. You should suspend any deliveries, such as milk and newspapers and ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property. Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there - timer switches can be used on lamps or your radio. Students heading home for Easter: Easter is a popular time for students to head home, meaning a popular time for opportunist thieves to enter your University house. If you are leaving Nottingham for the Easter break, make sure you take your laptop and any other valuable items with you – do not leave them behind, even if you don’t need them. Don’t leave any empty electrical boxes outside your home, as this could indicate that you have something worth stealing. If you would like to speak to your local police, call us on 101.
Going on holiday: As Easter approaches, thieves will be aware that homes may be vacant as families make the Find your Safer Neighbourhoods team by entering your postcode on the homepage of www. nottinghamshire.police.uk

New Year... Do I Really Need A New Start Every New Year a number of people will make a resolution to change jobs or look for a new career. The employment market in recent years has seen a strong recovery after the gloomy days of 2008/2009 and no longer do staff have to stay put out of a sense of gratitude for having a job. But despite the healthy state of the employment market is it always wise to move? • Am I taking a good job or just running away from a bad one? To make an informed decision, you need to know what appeals to you about the new opportunity—not just what you don’t like about your current company. • Do I know what I’m getting myself into? Will your visions of a pleasant work environment, rewarding projects and an appreciative manager be the reality? While the grass may indeed be greener on the other side, it still pays to do your homework. Research the firm’s corporate culture, financial stability and leadership. It’s amazing how much information is out there on the internet – and also try and network with current employees. • Will I be paid what I’m really worth? Don’t make the mistake of only comparing the salary offer to what you presently earn. Your paycheck isn’t necessarily the best benchmark. Glassdoor (www.glassdoor.co.uk) has a free salary comparison tool. • What does the total compensation package look like? Yes, salary matters. A lot. But don’t fall into the trap of focusing solely on that one element. A better benefits package, more generous pension plan and bigger bonus opportunities, for example, can boost your bottom line. Also consider your work/life balance. A shorter commute and increased holiday entitlement can make life much more pleasant. • Which company offers more room to grow and progress? At the end of the day, only one person is responsible for your career: you. But it’s certainly beneficial to have an employer that supports your professional development. Opportunity to access training, tuition reimbursement and to attend industry conferences can keep you moving forward professionally. Ideally, you want to work for a company that is committed to helping you grow your skills. Who offers a more clearly defined career path? Pay and benefits are important, but professional development and advancement potential should also be priorities. • Am I letting fear drive my decision? Just as it’s unwise to impulsively leave a job for the wrong reasons, don’t allow fear of the unfamiliar to hold you back from accepting a new one. Changing jobs always carries some degree of risk. But if you’ve thought through the situation and your gut is telling you to make a move, trust your intuition. And who are we to argue with Albert Einstein? “I believe in intuitions and inspirations...I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am” On behalf us all at SOLOS may I wish NG readers a happy and prosperous New Year. © Helen Jones

Nottingham River Cruise Company Makes Short List for Group Travel Awards 2016 Relocation will make them the best! Princess River Cruises have been selected by GTO Magazine as Runners Up for best canal or riverboat operator for groups 2016.

Volunteer in 2017
Almost everyone makes New Year’s resolutions. Many are negative like giving up something such as smoking, alcohol, chocolate etc. For 2017, think about setting some positive resolutions – help the community by becoming an expenses paid volunteer driver. Research shows that volunteers boost their self-esteem and happiness through helping charities to thrive. Gedling Voluntary Transport Scheme is keen to put people’s experience and spare time to good use. The charity provides affordable, reliable transport for elderly and disabled people who don’t drive, don’t have a car and can’t use public transport or taxis. The scheme keeps people active taking them to health appointments, to see friends and relatives, shopping and to social engagements. Anyone who likes driving, has a clean licence and likes helping people is urged to get in touch on gedlingtransport@rushcliffecvs. org.uk or 0115 969 9060. Expenses are covered at 45p per mile. Pete Chambers (pictured above), one of the regular volunteer drivers, says: “When I retired I needed an interest. I saw the advert for volunteer drivers and thought what a worthwhile thing to do. I have been doing it for over thirteen years now and it’s still very satisfying knowing you are helping clients get around. Over the years many of the clients and I have become friends.” More details at www.rushcliffecvs.org.uk

GEDLING SPORTS FORUM –
Hello NG14 Readers
who are we?
Gedling Sports Forum is an independent voice for sports clubs in Gedling. The Clubs, through their representatives, are the Forum; we meet four times a year to discuss the various matters that affect the different sports. This is all about sharing good practice and finding out what is happening in our own and other sports. If a club or sport has a concern then we may be able to help. In recent years, the Forum has lobbied on behalf of the swimming clubs of Gedling to Gedling Borough Council about the cost of hiring the leisure centre facilities and achieved a freeze on increased pool rental costs for a period of 12 months. The Forum also sent representation about the proposal for wind turbines overlooking the Poplars playing field in Burton Joyce. The proposal was for two, there is only one now and it is sited in a slightly different location so as not to cause problems for the sportsmen and women taking part in cricket and archery on the field. As Chairman of the Gedling Sports Forum, Stephanie Roberts is part of the Gedling Borough Council Playing Pitch Strategy Steering Group, speaking up for more and improved facilities for the clubs and teams in Gedling. The Forum is completely independent of the Council, GBC provide us with a meeting room but their representatives only attend our meeting by invitation. Is your club based in Gedling? Is your club involved with the Gedling Sports Forum? If not, please join us, together we can make a difference. For more information about the Gedling Sports Forum please contact the Chairman Stephanie Roberts by email gedlingsportsforum@yahoo.com. We can also be found on Facebook.

On Saturday 29th July until Saturday 19th August this year Belarussian children will hopefully be coming to our area. They all live in the area of Belarus that was and still is affected by the fall out of the Chernobyl disaster. They will be coming here for some fresh air and decent food. I am asking if you are able to host a child (or two). Within our members we have hosts of all ages from couples, families and retired persons. All the children will be aged 8-10½ years. The gender of the child will be your decision. Everything we do is new to them including going to the seaside. Also they go to the dentist and many of them have never sat in a dentist’s chair. The dates can be split with another family if three weeks is not convenient .You will receive 24/7 support also a support family at any time if you need one. The difference in language is never a problem in fact quite fun. All costs of bringing the children to our area is met by our link also the visits they go to will not cost you at all and you and your own family are encouraged to join them also at no cost to you. Hosting for us gives the children and yourselves a lot of fulfilment. If you wish to have further information regards hosting could you please contact me 07815 473802 or robert.crampton@tiscali. co.uk or robert.crampton@gmx.com and I with a female colleague will be only too pleased to come and see you and talk in depth of what is involved.

Westda leDenta I DENTALCARE FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Dental Health
Did you know that gum disease & plaque build-up are often the most common cause of tooth decay and eventual tooth loss? Around 80% of adults and more than half of teenagers are affected by gum disease. It is the biggest cause of tooth loss and linked to several major health conditions such as heart disease, stroke and bacterial lung infections.
At Westdale Dental we pride ourselves on the close working relationships between our dentists and hygienists so that you can be assured that your dental health is always in good hands. Our dedicated team of hygienists are fully qualified to assess and treat any gum problems you may have and carry out gentle but thorough scaling and polishing to more advanced gum treatments for gum disease. Our hygienists can also offer Airflow polishing; this is a gentle treatment which uses a fine jet of water with sodium bicarbonate to achieve great stain removing results. Direct Access - Change in legislation means that patients can directly access the services of a dental hygienist without seeing a dentist first. You can now continue to see your own NHS or private dentist for regular dental care and choose to see a dental hygienist for gum care and cleaning. At Westdale Dental, our team of hygienists are now able to offer appointments to non-registered patients who would like to benefit from this service and enjoy a healthier, cleaner, fresher mouth, or if it's just for that "Special Occasion", a wedding or a social event, why not call us today to book your appointment.
