WHAT’S NEW AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK IN 2018?
will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of parts of the set used in the movie inside the ‘Early Man Secret Cave’, which will be at the Park until Easter.
Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year.
Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feettall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drive-through is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild.
The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit - Ice Age - which is due to arrive in Spring. Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paracatherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall - a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.
West Midlands Safari Park is now open daily for its summer season. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. I
ntelligence is creativity, our ability to imagine things other than how they are. We are born creative, telling stories about imaginary friends and making fictional worlds with toys. Yet how many of us retain this level of intelligence as we age? Staying creative is a lot like staying fit – do it regularly, in a way that is fun to you, and it remains easy. Moreover, creativity is a transferable skill and benefits all fields of study, arts or STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). Creative scientists, engineers, farmers, chefs, parents etc... are exactly what the world needs more of. So, what's the best way to help kids stay imaginative? It's easier to understand if we first consider natural learning in mammals. Natural learning is observe, practice, imitate, master. Children are hardwired to copy the behaviour in the same way that baby tigers or elephants are.
Which means that the best way to help our children use their imaginations is to show how much we love using ours; we must be what we want our children to be. We can be as silly as we like with giggly games, tell tall tales with actions, paint pictures, recite our own funny poems. We can stop on the street to admire a flower or describe the rain as if the drops are liquid happiness tickling the flowers. Just like any baby mammal, after a period of observation, the child will begin to imitate and join in, safe in the knowledge that this kind of play is accepted and valued. Silliness can soon become part of a fun family life and playtime is bonding time. It's worth knowing that resilient kids have at least one person in their life who is irrationally crazy about them, whom they trust, love and are relaxed with. This kind of creative play is awesome for helping kids feel loved. Finally, we have an educational reason to have fun!

Alex Potters to School
W
ith one hand on each ear, Dad steers Alex down the street toward school. Both smile so widely that passersby grin too, their happiness spreading like the fragrance of flowers. With a tug to his right ear, Alex goes right, his red wellingtons splashing into spring puddles. Feeling his ears pulled forwards, Alex goes faster, the two of them jiggling along like a runaway train. With a backwards tug Alex slows. They zig-zag and circle twice around a lamp-post before stopping to greet Miggles the kitten. Miggles arches her back into Alex's hand, her fur feeling soft under his palm. She pads her paws up and down, as if her joy is simply too great for her to stay still. Miggles meows in short bursts, like cat-talk. Dad laughs, “Miggles is like you, Alex. She needs to move and make noise! How about a singing game until we get to school?” Alex stands up, head nodding, “You first! Sing 'I'm a little tea-pot' in the style of Hagrid.”
Dad puffs out his chest and strokes an imaginary beard. He nods as if his words carry great meaning, eye-brows raised and eyes bright. “Yeh know wha', Alex? If yeh can carry a song, it's good ter sing righ' loud an' this is a good'un tur-boot. I is a li-le tea-po' shor' an' stou, lif' me up an' pour me ou,'” Dad waves at Mrs Nesbit, the headteacher, before making his handle and spout. Alex giggles. Still in full Hadgrid-mode, Dad adds, “No, I should not 'ave dun tha.'” Dad puts on his faux-serious face. “Right, let's check everything works.” He tweaks Alex's nose and gives orders like an army general. “Hop on the spot. Flap your arms. Wiggle your bum. Stick out your tongue.” As Alex complies, his smile grows wider, knowing what comes next. “Oh!” says Dad, eyes bright and face full of mirth, “what a naughty child. Did you see that? He stuck out his tongue!” With a hug and a hair ruffle, Alex runs to class.

New volunteers needed!
Girlguiding Nottinghamshire offers a variety of flexible volunteering roles so people can find something that fits with the time they have to give, ranging from helping out at regular meetings or supporting weekend events to running occasional sessions with different groups. There’s also plenty of call for help ‘behind the scenes’ with tasks like unit admin and book-keeping. ‘I’ve been helping at Guides for about two years now, and have enjoyed every second!’ says Sophie Burton, 25, who is Assistant Leader with 1st Gedling Guide Unit. ‘After being a Brownie and a Guide myself, I returned to Guiding in order to give back the time which was given to me as a youngster. With the other leaders and helpers, we provide the support and guidance which enables our members to grow and become more confident individuals. CHILDREN’S LUNCH BOXES When I was a kid, a packed lunch was meat paste or marmite sandwiches on white sliced, a packet of crisps and a KitKat. To be fair, it doesn’t seem to have done me any harm, but these days we all strive for something a bit more interesting, and a lot healthier, to tempt our kids to eat a nutritious packed lunch. Inspiring ideas can be a bit of a challenge and it is tempting to revert to shop-bought, ready-made options that are high in fat, salt and sugar, but with half of all kids now taking a packed lunch to school it is clear that they make up an important part of a child’s nutrition and so it is worth putting a bit of thought into what goes into their “pack up”. Keep your lunchbox choices fresh, varied, tasty, low in fat, salt and sugar but most of all interesting. If your child is picky, fussy or, let’s face it, just a little monkey when it comes to their packed lunch, try the following tips:-
• Involve them in planning and preparing what goes into their lunchbox. • If they are fussy eaters, stick to a few items and gradually add new ones over time. • If they don’t like wholemeal bread (as many don’t) try adding fibre from beans or brown rice. • Offer some cheese, or yoghurt for extra calcium and some frozen berries or grapes (they will defrost before lunch but help to keep everything cold). • Stick with water to drink rather than sugary drinks and always provide some fresh veg in the form of carrot sticks or similar. You might also offer a hard-boiled egg, perhaps with a smiley face or a funny message such as “eat me” on it. • Add a healthy homemade banana and blueberry muffin, or a small piece of dark chocolate for a sweet treat to finish of the meal. Here are a few more suggestions for making your kid’s lunchbox a bit more interesting (all ingredients are approximate depending on how hungry your little ones get!)

Cut-Out Sandwiches Serve your usual sandwiches but with a twist. Ingredients White Sliced Bread Brown Sliced Bread Sandwich fillings of choice Use a healthy, nutritious sandwich filling, such as cucumber and tuna, cream cheese and celery (thinly sliced) or cheese and tomato. Remove a shape from the centre of each slice using a cookie cutter and replace in the alternative white or brown slice. Simple and fun!
Cheesy Quesadilla with Tuna Mayo Pitta a Rainbow Salad Ingredients 1 Tortilla Wrap Cheddar cheese (grated) Spring onions (finely sliced) Mixed bean salad (tin, drained) Yellow pepper (chopped) Cherry tomatoes (halved) Carrot (finely sliced) Cut the tortilla wrap in half. Top one half with the grated cheese and the spring onion slices. Place the other half on top. Heat for about 1 minute each side in a non-stick frying pan until lightly browned. Remove from heat, allow to cool and cut into half or quarters (depending on the size of your wraps). Wrap in foil and place in lunch-box. For the salad, drain the bean salad, mix with the chopped pepper, tomatoes and carrot, place in a separate sealed container. (You can season with a little olive oil, salt and pepper if desired).
Ingredients Tuna chunks in spring water (drained) 2 tbsp sweetcorn (drained) Light mayonnaise to mix 1 wholemeal pitta Shredded lettuce (I used hot-house, but iceberg gives some added crunch) Mix the drained tuna with the sweetcorn and mayonnaise (add a little salt and pepper if you wish). Halve the pitta, lightly toast and allow to cool. Divide the tuna mix between them, add the shredded lettuce. Wrap in foil and add to lunchbox. Serve a portion of mixed fruit in a separate container on the side.

Lungworm in Dogs Over the last few years a new parasitic disease, Canine Lungworm, has occurred the UK. Initially dogs effected have been mainly in the South of England but as we have become more vigilant, cases have been diagnosed all over the British Isles. Recently a dog from Calverton was infected and sadly died of the disease. This dog had been on holiday recently but was not on lungworm prevention medication. There have been 108 confirmed cases in the East Midlands. The lungworm angiostrongylus vasorum is now endemic throughout much of the UK. Commonly lungworm is seen in younger dogs due to their inquisitive nature but can be seen in dogs of all ages. It does not effect cats or other species. Slugs and snails carry the lungworm larvae, and dogs can become infected when they eat these common garden pests accidentally or deliberately, whilst rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls, or pick them up from their toys. Foxes and frogs have also been implicated in it’s spread. The symptoms shown by dogs can be quite vague but include:
- Breathing problems - Change in behaviour - Blood clotting problems - General sickness If you are worried make sure you get the vet to examine your pet, often diagnosis is confirmed on blood and feacal tests and with x-rays. Thankfully most dogs, if diagnosed early, will make a good recovery, however prevention is the best way to keep your dog healthy. Traditional 3-6 monthly worming regimes with older wormers do not afford a good protection for canine lungworm. Most vets now recommend a monthly treatment with an approved lungworm product given all the year round. Speak to your vet about the best way to prevent this horrible disease. THE TEETOTAL TALE J
anuary arrives every year, grey and gloomy. For me it is the worst month of the year to start any good intentions. With a fridge full of cheese and mountains of chocolate it would be wasteful (and emotionally risky) to suddenly enter a month of deprivation. So with this in mind I decided to challenge myself to a month off the booze back in November. A preChristmas cleanse if you will. I wouldn’t class myself as a heavy drinker although Public Health England** might. They reckon that more than 10 million of us exceed the recommended weekly units. It’s easily done. A large glass of wine (my favourite tipple) is a third of a bottle! My other half agreed to join my challenge and so it was with a real sense of trepidation (and a heap of scepticism from friends and family) that we downed our last drink(s) on Halloween. Experts believe that 30 days without a drink can undo the damage drinking can do to our bodies. According to Dr. Nicki Nance*, an American doctor, a 30 day break can improve our long-term drinking habits. Well, I thought, let’s see shall we... I have to admit I did find it hard. A winter walk with the dogs, ending in a pub – nope. Cooking at the weekend, accompanied by a glass of something fizzy – nope. Sitting down to watch a film at the end of the day with a G & T – forget it! Sadly, it became apparent that booze is intrinsic to my life and I needed something to replace it. So I went out and bought some Horlicks (yes, really). That didn’t work. So I went out and bought half a ton of expensive chocolate biscuits. That helped...a bit. To boost morale I googled “booze free month” and reeled off all the benefits we should have been experiencing. Brighter skin, better sleep, weight loss, happier, healthier etcetera, etcetera, etcetera... My skin looked no different if I am honest, yes I did sleep better but eating my own bodyweight in chocolate bikkies meant I gained weight therefore I did not feel happier or healthier!!! The biggest change we noticed was in our pocket. We were about £50 a week better off which was nice.
Doing this challenge as a couple undoubtedly made it easier. When one of us had a weak moment, the other would mock and scoff at the lack of will power, and this made us even more determined not to cave in, although I have to admit that a slight cough had me reaching for the Covonia Night Time (7% alcohol) which felt so wrong it felt right! Another unexpected side effect experienced by my other half was the phantom hangover (apparently a real thing). So he would wake up on Saturday morning feeling awful and then remember he hadn’t had a drink and it was therefore physically impossible for him to be feeling so rotton. Weird. Even more weird was the fact that I wasn’t desperate for a drink and when I finally poured myself a small glass of wine on December 1st, it didn’t fill me with joy and I didn’t even enjoy the taste! To be fair I did have a second glass, (just to be sure!) but I didn’t get the buzz from it I was hoping for. It’s now mid-January and I have to admit that Dr Nance was right. I am not drinking anywhere near the amount I used to. My body appears to have come to its senses and re-set itself. It now tells me to stop (apart from New Years Eve when it all went horribly wrong!). Don’t get me wrong, I could never be teetotal but over Christmas the spirits went untouched and I even offered to drive on Christmas Day without sulking (unheard of). I am now a more “mindful” drinker according to experts. Enjoying every sip and appreciating it. The Bulcote Unicorn by Bob Massey
Ivy House in Bulcote was once a toffee factory and a dairy but is best known as an inn called the Unicorn. The first known landlord of the inn was John Slater, resident from 1822 to 1936. He was a member of the Willow Lodge of the Nottingham Imperial Order of Odd Fellows and the lodge meetings were regularly held in the Unicorn. On June 23rd,1834 as in other years, the local order paraded in full regalia to the church for the annual service and then returned to the Unicorn for a special dinner where all, according to the report, had a very convivial time.
a contract for the work was let and it was Richard Allwood at the Unicorn who organised this. Allwood advertised for interested parties to contact him in March 1850 to arrange the work. Allwood left the Unicorn in 1856. One of his last duties was to provide facilities for the inquest that was held in the inn in December that year. John Clarke, the infant son of John Clarke Senior, a groom in Bulcote, died of chicken pox. This childhood disease was a killer in the 1850’s, as there were few drugs and little medical knowledge on the treatment of contagious diseases. The Medical Officer of Health in Arnold reported about the same time, that a major outbreak had only resulted in six deaths. Another inquest was carried out in February 1867. This time a body had been found on the high road between Bulcote and Lowdham. The man was identified as Joseph Bell, a drover. The circumstances were unknown and there were no witnesses, so the jury, under the direction of the coroner, Newton, passed a rather odd verdict of simply “Found Dead”.
These events were well reported in the Nottingham Review at the time, as were the many auctions of goods and land that took place in the pub. One such sale was that of the land that had been owned by William Allcock. This was carried out after his death in September 1836. The Unicorn was at the heart of Bulcote and was the venue for many activities. When it came time to revise the voting list in October 1841, this was carried out by two local solicitors, Edward Chambers and Charles Malpas, who based their work at the inn. By 1849 the inn had changed hands, with Richard Allwood now in charge. For those who either could not or did not own the equipment to plough their own fields,
Edmond Clay had now replaced Richard Allwood, but in November 1867 he too was found dead in his bed by his wife at the young age of 46. Clay was subject to an inquest in his own pub. It would appear from the reports that he was rather fond of sampling his own wares! He was also in rather poor health, having been sick for nearly a week. Clay was a joiner by trade and as was normal at the time, he carried out this trade alongside his duties in the inn. The day to day running of the inn, as was also common, fell to his wife. Very few landlords at the time could earn enough from the pub alone and had other jobs very often connected with the carriage trade; horse dealer, blacksmith, wheelwright etc. Edmond Clay’s death was declared to be apoplexy brought on by excessive drinking. The inn was now about to change hands again...

Bingham and District Choral Society would like to congratulate Emily Hodkinson, the recent winner of its inaugural competition for young musicians across the East Midlands. Emily is a mezzo soprano from Nottingham. She has received a bursary of £500, generously sponsored by the choir’s patron John Beaumont and his wife Barbara. In addition, Emily has been awarded a prize in the form of an opportunity to sing with the choir in the future. This is an exciting new departure for the choir, demonstrating its commitment to supporting young musical talent in our area. Our annual Singing Day takes place on Saturday March 10th at the Minster School, Southwell, led by Marcus Farnsworth. This is open to any singers who would like to take part. arning! Mid-life crisis incoming. I may well be a hop, step and a jump away from splashing the cash on a flash ride, squeezing myself into skinny jeans and disappearing over the horizon. Or not. Probably not in fact. But I’m starting to get a little worried. The first signs of old age are edging in, no longer do I live with the unerring confidence of youth. Gone are the giddy days of immortality and making pacts with friends that we’ll die wearing Levi’s whilst listening to music that’s still relevant. What’s caused this you ask? Well, I’m facing up to the fact that my hairline is no longer what it was. I was more than happy to go grey, after all a little salt and pepper in the hair is fine by me, but it’s really starting to go on the top. My daughter is an honest critic who now refers to the “hole on the top of my head”. My barber recently quipped that he may not be seeing much of me in the future. “Less than you think sunshine” was my immediate response to the impudent pup. So what to do? Bite the bullet and take early action, or watch for the slow disappearance of hair like some glacial movement only to wake up one day and realise it’s all gone? Fortunately there are plenty of options (and role models). Yul Brynner, Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart and Jason Statham have all pulled off the buzzcut/bare noggin with masterful success. Though they are all A-list film stars this is still an achievable option, even for a middle-aged dad from Woodthorpe. On the other hand, you don’t have to look far for what happens when you leave the situation unchecked. Rab C Nesbit springs to mind, as does being distracted by the island of hair clinging to Steve McClaren’s forehead whenever I see him interviewed. I’ll forgive Bobby Charlton because he’s a living legend and somehow got away with it.
So I have to face it, the days of walking in slow motion through a stiff breeze with a bouffant fringe dancing in the wind are behind me (I’m more worried my remaining hair may take flight). There are fewer options when I go to the barbers and I’ve learnt to silently hate the pictures of hair models sporting pompadours and other luxurious hairstyles. But on the other hand, it’s quite liberating. I’m not a fan of having too much choice so nature is taking all the distraction away from me. I’m going bald at the back and receding at the front so I can’t deny it any longer. And as the youngest in my family my sisters are delighted that their little brother is losing his hair. And, being sisters, they hardly ever point it out in public. Ever. So I think I’ve made my choice, keep the hair super short (within reason). I’m not sure I want to get rid of all of it but I’d rather keep it neat. I’ve seen too many aging rockers who are clinging to the concept of long hair whilst losing it all on top. That’s not a look anyone needs, it’s akin to a badly maintained mullet (which isn’t easy considering the utter contempt I have for mullets). In fact, most recently it appears that Prince William himself has been having the very same issue as me and has reached similar conclusions. Maybe I should follow his lead? All I need is a spare £150 for a haircut.
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

It’s Never Too Late to Change Career

Not so long ago being 50 years old was considered to be on the slippery slope to old age and genteel retirement. Today that notion is outdated and somewhat ridiculous. There are few restrictions these days to making major changes in late middle age – and these don’t include taking off abroad a la Shirley Valentine (although some may find this very appealing). The population in the UK is getting older with 18% aged 65 and over and 2.4% aged 85 and over and a large number of people are continuing to work out of choice way beyond retirement age. Here at Solos we recently placed a 71 year old lady into work because she was bored at home. She had a wealth of experience to offer our client and also a wonderful work ethic. The pressures of previous years can reduce or disappear after a certain age and the need to earn lessen. This is the time to maybe re-evaluate not what you have been doing professionally but what appeals to you. Let’s be honest the opportunities available today compared to when I first entered the workplace in the 80s has changed beyond recognition. We are truly living in the digital age and the scope of job offerings in this sector alone has exploded over the past twenty years. Free or low cost training programmes which are available (search The Princes Trust or Google) can bring you bang up to date with your skills. However the biggest benefit that maturity and hindsight brings is self-awareness. You know what you’re good at and you also know what you enjoy. And many people in middle age are now turning to what they enjoy for their income. If you’re creative there are so many ways to promote and sell your products online such as Instagram/Etsy/Shpock. Achieving this change wouldn’t be stress free initially – so make sure you talk to your family and friends and gain their support for your ideas. Me? I’m still waiting for the right moment to buy 100 acres in order to set up a dog rescue….

2017 was a very successful year for the Rotary. Working alongside the charity, Forever Stars, they raised more than £14,000 towards the opening of the Serenity Suite at the City Hospital’s Maternity Unit. The Serenity Suite caters for mothers and families who lose a baby during pregnancy or child birth. A Christmas carol evening helped raise over £1200 to support the clubs continued work sending local teenagers on outward bound courses. This is an ongoing initiative that has been going for ten years in conjunction with their twin club in Holland. The Christmas float was extremely successful again raising around £7000. This money will go towards supporting local charities. Current President, Richard Shacklock, is supporting the palliative cancer-care unit, Hayward House, this year and along with his wife has already made a major difference in the HH grounds. Hopefully it will be in full bloom come the spring and become more established over the coming years! hankfully the sparkles weren’t packed away with the Christmas decorations as Strictly fever swept Nottingham during the first part of the year. Stars of the show past and present visited the Motorpoint Arena, whilst Anton and Erin dropped in on the Theatre Royal and Vincent and Flavia bought their Tango Moderno spectacular to the Royal Concert Hall. The 90 minute spectacular managed to pack in not only what shape tango is in today but what the UK’s dancing scene looks like, along with a lesson in relationships just in time for Valentines Day. Don’t put your dancing shoes away yet as we have Remembering Fred at the Theatre Royal (29 April), Flashdance (7 May) and Kevin and Karen (30 May) still to come. March sees the first of two visits from one of the most successful British female artists of the last decade to the city when singer-songwriter, Paloma Faith plays the Arena (3 March). She has also been announced as headlining this year’s Splendour Festival at Wollaton Park in June. Fancy some nostalgia? Make sure you catch Madness front man, Suggs at the Theatre Royal (18 March) and chart-topping duo Tears for Fears at the Arena (28 April). If you want to catch the stars of the future, then make sure you get yourself along to the Dot to Dot Festival taking place on 27 March. The Festival has continued to showcase the best new acts from around the world since starting in Nottingham more than a decade ago. Comedy is on the cards for the Spring as the Arena welcomes John Bishop (9 March) and Michael McKintyre (23/24 March) whilst David Baddiel (25 March) and Joe Lycett( 25 April) visit the Playhouse. Speaking of Spring, make sure you get along
to Hodstock Priory in Worksop to catch their magnificent display of Snowdrops before 18th March and enjoy the great outdoors at Wellow on Bank Holiday Monday (28 May) with their Maypole celebrations. This unique event has its roots in 19th century but has evolved over time to become one of Nottinghamshire’s largest one day village festivals. Finally, whilst we’re on the subject of history, keep fit and learn by joining a Lace Walk on 17/18 March. Manufactured lace had a momentous impact on Nottingham. Local historian and graphic designer Chris Mathews will lead the walk which will take in not only the workshops, factories and warehouses but also the streets, housing, parks and buildings transformed by the lace industry. The walk is part of Lace Unravelled, a season of events and exhibitions to celebrate 18 months’ research in to Nottingham City Museums & Galleries’ world-class Lace and Lace Machinery collections. Local Author Has New Book Published Pen and Sword author Michael Harrison from Woodborough who was born and educated in Birmingham, has an M.A in British First World War Studies from Birmingham University and had a lifelong interest in the First World War, including the transport and logistic aspect of the conflict, has recently had his new book published. High Wood takes the battlefield visitor, as well as those who are unable to visit the site, on a journey through the weeks of fighting for High Wood and its immediate environs. This is the story of the largely inexperienced British Army of 1916 and the fumbling progress it made in learning the skills to fight an industrial war of the twentieth century. Lessons were learned in the furnace of the Somme that would transform the fighting ability of the British. High Wood was at the epicentre of that learning process. The book contains detailed maps of the High Wood battles, many of which are extracts from trench maps. Michael made his first journey to the Somme in 1977. From that time High Wood has exerted a strong pull on him that refused to be ignored; this book is the result.

Nottingham Captivated By Strangers Project Photographer and Nottingham Trent University Lecturer Crash Taylor has spent the last 12 months taking photos of strangers in Nottingham.

The project has become an instant hit having been featured in the Nottingham Post, Notts TV, BBC Nottingham and numerous national photography magazines. There is a website, Facebook page and an Instagram feed, which just reached over 2000 followers.
“I select people who I find visually cool and interesting. That could be anyone but I let my eyes guide me. I must be doing something right as nine out of ten say yes to a photo.”

Crash Taylor is a full time property photographer for fhp living but when not taking photos of homes, he is on the streets capturing portraits of visually inspiring people and asking them to make a wish. He says he started the project to break out of his comfort zone and meet strangers, to find out what people wish for in today’s urban society. He added: “I have taken photos in Los Angeles, New York, Helsinki, Spain, Italy, Hawaii and many other places and nothing compares to the

University Life Survival Guide by Sam Burton
University is said to be one of the sure-fire ways of getting a job. On top of that, university is supposed to be the best time of your life. With so much pressure put on one period of time, here are some tips, personal experiences, and industry facts to help you do this whole uni-thing right.
Student Finance The first hurdle you will encounter is Student Finance, the government appointed student-support system that pays for your university education and depending on your household income (what your parents earn) will give you a maintenance loan to help pay for your rent and survive the days on something more than £1 noodles (not fun, trust me). The highest maintenance tier is for people with a household income of £25,000 or less a year. This could get you up to £8,200 for your maintenance loan. If you decide to live at home you will get around £1000 less. But this money isn’t free (sadly). You’ll pay 9% of earnings above a threshhold of £21,000 (fixed til 2021) back to the government monthly until your debt is repaid. Eg; if you earn £25,000 you will pay 9% of £4,000: £30 a month. This will be taken out like a tax. Applying for Student Finance can seem very confusing with a lot of forms to fill out, but don’t worry; the sign-up process is a guided one on their website and makes everything surprisingly simple. Just make sure you have a working printer for the posted forms and that your parents have their income details to hand.
Housing Once you have the money, you’ll be wanting to find a place to live. An important decision as this will be the place you work, eat, sleep, and finally get to relax in after a long day of absorbing lecture after lecture for a year. The three main types of accommodation are flats, houses, and studio apartments. The average rent of a flat is £155.90 per week*. For a house it is £141.60 per week*. And for studios it is £222.70 per week*. I spent my first year in a student-flat with six other people. The first couple of months were super fun. It was daunting meeting so many new people at once, but everyone is in the same boat so the atmosphere is always welcoming. Not being much of a partyanimal though, the later months where the rest of the building were having a raging party were not as much fun. If that is your scene then you’ll feel right at home, but if you’re a bit more introverted like me, this may be an important factor to consider. For my second year I lived in a studio apartment where my living room, kitchen, and bedroom were all the same room. The independence and freedom a studio apartment gives is amazing. Being able to have my friends over whenever in this spacious zone that turned into our own personal gaming room and make-shift cinema made some of my favourite university memories.
Friends and Courses
Speaking of friends, they are the life-blood of any university experience. Being able to purely study what you want puts you into contact with like-minded people who all have the same overwhelming passion and being in that atmosphere is an electric feeling. Plus being able to just study what you want is a revelation in itself. That combined with the strong bonds forged through trying to hit an assignment’s deadline is an almost guaranteed winning combination.
No matter what, university is definitely an unforgettable time. So good luck and remember, even when you have five deadlines on the same week and the guy in the room next to you won’t stop blaring out the worst music imaginable, take moments for yourself and above all, have fun. *Averages worked out by taking the rent for the top 10 properties on an estate agent’s site in Sheffield on the time of writing and finding the mean.

It seemed like the whole of Redhill had turned up to hear local historian Bob Massey. A ringing bell sounded Massey’s dramatic entrance. Wearing a bright red traditional 1860s postal uniform he regaled us with tales from Redhill’s past. If you’re kicking yourself because you missed the open-talk, don’t worry we have you covered. Here are some of the most shocking and intriguing tales from the night...
Swift Nick & Dick Turpin
The First Highway(wo)man
Mansfield Road was the M1 of medieval times, perfect for ambushing. Many outlaws made our area their home. Turpin was one such highwayman (a horseback robber). But Turpin’s biggest claim to fame actually belonged to someone else. Turpin’s legendary 15 hour trek to York was just a story told by someone in a pub that was taken as fact. Actually, the feat belongs to Swift Nick Nevison who did it 50 years before. But that’s not to devalue Turpin’s legend; he was still a ferocious outlaw. Turpin moved to this area in 1735. Arnold had a high level of organised crime, it was like the mafia. But even the leader of this Arnold based mafia was terrified of Turpin. He once walked eight miles through a blizzard to pay Turpin!
One of the first highwaymen was actually a woman. Joan Phillips was a wealthy child of a farm owner. Edward Bracey courted her as a means to the end of robbing her father. However, Bracey fell for Joan and told her what his original intentions were. He expected her to throw him out, but instead Joan agreed that it was a great idea. They robbed her dad and ran away together into the sunset. They became highwaymen (she dressed as a man) and they lived happily ever after. Until 1685. When robbing another in a long line of wagons, Joan’s horse was shot from under her and Bracey died in battle. Joan was found to be a woman and hung.
Tales from Mansfield Road One day down Mansfield Road, there was a newly married couple travelling in a wagon that broke down. The driver said he’d go out and find help, leaving the couple in the wagon for ages. Night was beginning to fall and the husband went to look for the driver, leaving his new wife alone in the wagon. Shortly after a light came back down the road. It was the driver. Then, all of a sudden, a loud banging started to come from above the wife’s head, on top of the wagon. The driver shouted to the wife “get out of the wagon!” The wife replied “Where is my husband?” The driver continued to insist she get out of the wagon and to not look back. The wife slowly exited the wagon and ran to the driver, following his instructions and not looking back. She made it to the driver and when she did look back she saw an escaped patient from a close-by lunatic asylum on top of the wagon smashing her late husband’s head into it. Nottingham’s Very Own Rhino Pinchbeck, the inventor of artificial gold, was a travelling salesman. As a gimmick, he travelled with a female rhino, the only one in the country. While travelling down Mansfield Road the rhino stopped, stone-dead. There are records of this, but none of what happened after. On average they weigh about 1,600 kg, so how did they move her? Did they even attempt to? No one knows. If one day some rhino bones are found, we’ll know where they came from.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... What is fraud? Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person. It can refer to a business or individual. It is also increasingly linked to cyber crime.
Protect yourself against online fraud… Ensure your operating systems and software programs are kept up to date, antivirus software is installed and you have downloaded a tool to detect and remove malware.
Anyone can be a victim. Help prevent this by taking the following precautions:
Check the authenticity of a website before making any purchase by carrying out research into the company name, business address and reviews.
Protect yourself against coldcallers and bogus door-to-door sales Never hand out any bank or personal details to a third party, by phone or email. Genuine companies will not conduct business in this manner. If in doubt, hang up and ring the company on their main phone number. Turn away anyone offering financial proposals or anything that requires immediate signature or payment. The services bought will likely never materialise and scammers can utilise your signature. Shred receipts with your card details on, along with post with your name and address on. Identity fraudsters don’t need much information in order to be able to clone your identity. Check credentials, including a permanent business address and a landline telephone number. The mobile phone numbers on a fraudster’s business card are often pay-as-you-go numbers which are virtually impossible to trace.
Stay up to date with the latest scams by checking the Action Fraud news feed. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I think I have been a victim of fraud. What should I do? If you think you’ve been scammed, ripped off or conned, you should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Action Fraud is run by the National Fraud Authority and is a one-stop reporting centre which handles all reports of fraud in the UK. If you believe an individual is targeting vulnerable people in your community to con them, you should report it to us on 101. Also tell us if you know the offender or you know of suspicious fraudulent activity.
