Welcome to the May/June edition... Finally it looks like the weather is improving. About time as well! We are sick of still having to put the heating on and dreading the bill.... money saving tips are always good news so we are loving the recipes in this edition. Three family meals from one chicken - what’s not to like! Don’t forget the next edition will cover the summer holidays so let us know if you have any events that you want to publicise. As always please keep in touch with any community news. We love to hear from you. Happy Reading Ali, Cat, Sarah & Helen

Guided Walks Are Here Again
The 2013 edition of the Notts Guided Walks Programme is now being distributed round Nottinghamshire’s libraries, visitor centres, parks etc. It contains 159 short and medium guided walks, led by experienced ramblers and compiled from the programmes of the County’s leading walking clubs and organisations. This total includes many fascinating wildlife walks at Attenborough, the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, Wilwell and other well-loved sites. For those new to walking or trying to regain their health, the programme also contains even more short ‘health walks’ with contact telephone numbers for 13 centres around the County. The A5 booklet is free, as are most of the walks. If you cannot obtain one (and cash limits the number printed), you can find all the information on the partnership’s web-site at www. nottsguidedwalks.co.uk Get fit, get slim and enjoy our countryside!

Hot Air Balloon Club looking for new members
Nottingham & Derby Hot Air Balloon Club was started by a group of enthusiasts in 1978 and has been a regular sight around Notts and Derbys for 35 years. It is believed to be unique in the UK as the only balloon club with membership open to the general public. The club is a non-proft making sports club run by volunteers. Members get a chance to get involved in all aspects of flying balloons. No previous experience is needed as the club runs regular members training evenings and also other social events. We own two complete balloons and mainly fly locally from 6 different launch sites. In previous years members have attended balloon meets in the USA, India, France, Ireland and even Australia. In 2005 we flew our balloon across the English Channel for a charity event. In July 2011 we attended a meet at Chambley in France and helped set a new world record for the largest simultaneous launch of hot air balloons. The club’s balloon has been featured live on the BBC Breakfast Show and was also once used for an episode of the ITV drama Boon filmed in the grounds of Nottingham Castle. We sometimes get asked to inflate our balloons at local shows and fetes and also at wedding receptions. We are currently looking to recruit some extra members so we can fly more often. For enquiries about club membership telephone 0115 8541028.

Calverton MW FC U18s Champions Calverton MW FC Under 18s have been crowned Nottinghamshire County Champions in a thrilling 3-2 win over Dunkirk FC. The first half saw Calverton play the more flowing football but saw them spurn some good chances to take the lead while they were in the ascendancy as they checked that the woodwork was in place! The Dunkirk keeper was forced into a couple of good saves to keep the scores level, and so it was against the run of play when Dunkirk scored a minute before half time. There’s an old saying that you are most vulnerable just after scoring, and so it turned out as less than a minute later, Calverton were level. So half time – Calverton 1-1 Dunkirk. A slow start to the second half and within 3 minutes of the restart, Dunkirk took advantage of a lapse in the Calverton defence to retake the lead. In a repeat of Dunkirk being vulnerable after scoring, Calverton went straight back up the other end and equalised. With 15 minutes remaining, Calverton scored a great oportunistic goal to take the lead for the first time, and they held on to win as Dunkirk threw everything at them. The win gives Calverton the first trophy of their season, as they chase a triple of 2 cups and the league. Deserved Man of the Match was Anil Singh as he was outstanding at the heart of the Calverton defence. That said, this was a great team performance as the lads worked really hard for one another for 90 minutes.

Introducing the new Nottingham North Kip McGrath Education Centre at 35a Plains Road, Mapperley
Does your child need a little extra help to meet their potential? Kip McGrath centres offer tuition specially adapted to your child’s needs. Here at the Nottingham North Centre in Mapperley, as at all of the 250 plus UK branches we run classes after school and on Saturday mornings in English and Maths for students aged 5 to 16. We also offer special classes tailored to help students prepare for GCSE and A levels. These booster classes can make a real difference to grades. We begin with a free, no obligation assessment and the tutoring, based on the results of this, is at affordable and competitive rates. We are Ofsted registered. This means that if your family receive Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits you can use these to pay for the lessons. If your employer has a Childcare Voucher scheme you can use this to pay for tuition. In the latest budget
the government confirmed its commitment to supporting these schemes which they say will apply to 2.5 million families by 2015 so this funding is not going to disappear. All out tutors are qualified, experienced teachers and our maximum class size is 5. Gedling introduces School Council Pack Gedling Borough Council is encouraging primary schools in the borough to teach children about democracy by establishing school councils using a specially designed pack. The initiative has been trialled at Westdale Infant School in Mapperley, where Gedling councillor Kathryn Fox has worked with teachers and pupils alike to develop the School Councils Pack that is now available to all schools in the Borough. The pack includes advice on how to set up a School Council, ideas for running an election, what individual members of the School Council do, and the benefits of having a School Council. Councillor Fox, who is Portfolio Holder for Community Development, said: “I have young children myself, and my inspiration for this initiative was that children should be helped to realise that they have a voice to bring about positive change in their school and community. “I also wanted to introduce and explore the concept of voting within the school environment, to encourage children to be part of the democratic process and to understand how this parallels with the role of local councillors and MPs.” Gedling Borough Council is now contacting all infant, junior and primary schools in the Borough to see if they would like a pack. Schools who get involved and set up their own School Council will also be invited to Gedling Civic Centre to have a tour of the council chamber and civic areas, and meet councillors for a question and answer session.

Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. THREE WAYS WITH CHICKEN
Quite often I buy a whole chicken which can easily provide my family with three delicious meals and plenty of stock for freezing and making into soups and stews. These recipes are equally delicious with left over roast chicken, however I find poaching the bird keeps the meat moist. For a 2kg chicken (£7.40 from Beechdale Butchers)- place it in a large saucepan and add 1 carrot, 1 onion (halved), 10 peppercorns and 2 bay leaves. Cover with water, bring the lidded pan to the boil and simmer for about 1hr 30 mins. Remove the chicken and cool. Drain the cooking liquid. This is great stock and can be frozen in plastic soup containers. Then get all the meat off the bones and divide up for the recipes.

Brickyard Events by Bob Massey Mapperley has always had brickyards, from the time of the Romans right up to the present day. Throughout the Industrial Revolution bricks were in great demand and a number of private brickyards grew along Mapperly Plains.
want to press the case very severely. He had merely brought it forward, he said, as a warning to others. The magistrates then imprisoned the two boys for three days and cautioned them that if they did the like again they would be dealt with severely.
One by one these brickyards were taken over or sold so that in the end the largest employer in the area was the Nottingham Patent Brick Company. The brickyards were very open places and covered a large area. It was therefore very easy for people to gain access. On Friday 9th April 1869 two young boys named Chapman and Corbett were charged with stealing from the brickyard. A few days afterwards, a cutting knife and an iron bar were found to be missing. PC Loverseed was travelling down Woodborough Road when he spied the two lads, with Chapman trying to hide a knife and iron bar under his jacket. Loverseed was suspicious and stopped to speak to the boys.
The production of bricks was a dangerous business and accidents were common. Typical of these was one that happened on Wednesday January 15th 1879. A man named James Varney, aged 65, was working at the main site in Mapperley when a large quantity of clay fell on him. Varney was completely buried by the avalanche. Once extricated he was immediately taken to Nottingham General Hospital. When examined it was found that his thigh was fractured and his spine injured. Unfortunately these injuries were fatal and he died a short time after his admission.
The boys claimed they had found the items near the brickyard. Corbett grabbed the iron bar and ran off but was later arrested. Each of the boys then blamed each other. Mr Gripper, the Managing Director of the brickyard stated at their trial that he did not
Edward Gripper
It was not only employees who had accidents. The brickworks were full of deep ponds where the clay had been extracted. These were very popular with local youths especially in the spring and summer months. In April 1886 three boys named Horace Simonds and Arthur and Enoch Kirk, all aged between 14 and 16yrs were amusing themselves by floating on planks on one of the ponds. Arthur Kirk and Simonds slipped from the planks into the water and both were soon in trouble. Enoch Kirk, who had been on the edge of the pond, dived in to help and caught hold of Simonds. With great difficulty he brought him out of the pond up its very slippery sides. Both were now exhausted. Arthur Kirk was not so lucky, unable to get out up the slippery sides he sadly drowned. As a result of this, and similar incidents, the Coroner ordered that all ponds were to be fenced off.
I am researching the history of the area and would be pleased to hear from any one with details of the people and places now long gone. Email bob.m.massey@ gmail.com or post via NG3

They will all be seeking to knock South Nottingham College off their pedestal as reigning champions whilst raising muchneeded funds for the Hospice. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from
being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. Carol Lester, Director of Challenge organisers, Gable Events, adds; “The Challenge is a great chance to try something completely different, enjoy a fabulous day out and raise money for Rainbows. It is also a fantastic team building opportunity what better way to get to know what makes your colleagues and competitors tick? August may seem a long way off but we are expecting the Dragon Boat Challenge to be extremely popular this year so we strongly urge teams to sign up early in order to secure a place”. For further information and an entry form please visit: www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/ nottingham or call Gable Events on 01780 470 718.

A Community Speed Watch scheme organised by Gedling Borough Council and Nottinghamshire Police is calling for local residents to get involved to reduce speeding in their communities. The aim is to encourage drivers to adhere to the speed limit. Nottinghamshire Police will provide training and equipment so volunteers can monitor speeding in their areas. If drivers are caught speeding, letters are sent to registered keepers of offending vehicles asking for their help in keeping speeds down. Persistent offenders’ details will be passed onto local police for targeted enforcement by the volunteers monitoring the speeds.

Coming out of a particularly dark and relentlessly cold winter feels like emerging from underneath a giant cloak, blinking in the daylight. In typical British fashion though, there won’t be many of us who haven’t already found an excuse to put on our shorts. And so, with the increase in daylight hours and sunshine our thoughts naturally turn to the garden. The hedges invariably need a trim and the lawn starts to grow again. Following a few burglaries in Burton Joyce of late, let’s start the new season as we mean to go on with our home and garden security. Lock your front and back doors, even if you are in the house or garden, and do not leave windows open in unattended rooms. You might only be in the next room but would you notice if someone snatched your mobile phone through an open window or hopped in and grabbed your laptop sitting on the coffee table? Never leave valuable items on display or near windows and doors, this includes keys. Don’t forget your sheds and garages, and check that your home insurance extends to the belongings you keep in them. Keep doors locked and when you are working in the garden or on your car close your shed or garage door so as not to advertise what you keep inside. Chain large items likes bikes and lawnmowers together so they are more difficult to steal, mark your property and register it on a free website such as www.immobilise. com. A thief is less likely to be able to sell something that is branded with the owner’s name. And if it does go at least you are more likely
to be reunited with an item if it is found. Where possible, install a burglar alarm for your house, a security light for your garden and a shed alarm. Report suspicious activity around yours or your neighbours’ houses or gardens to police. If you suspect someone of dealing in stolen goods call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Finally, I’d like you to take a moment to consider the process you go through when answering a knock at your front door. Do you know who is calling before you open it? Unfortunately, in this world there are people who are not as honest as you or I. Be wary of strangers who come to your home without an appointment offering a service or claiming to be from the council, a utilities company or the police. Look through the window or spyhole or call to that person to establish who they are before opening your door. Always ask for identification and verify this by checking it against the telephone directory and calling the company they claim to work for. If you have any qualms, do not let them into your home. If they are genuine they will be more than willing to arrange to return at a later date, by which time you can check they are who they say they are and ensure there is someone you know at home with you when they next call. If in doubt, keep them out. Report any suspicious visitors to us on 101.

High Flying Fundraiser at Sellors Ltd Fed up with all the snow last month, staff at Calverton based animal feed specialists, Sellors Ltd decided to take matters into their own hands and brighten themselves up with a Yellow Fundraiser Week, all in aid of the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. So from the 18 - 23 March, the shop on Main Street was transformed into a yellow wonderland complete with daffodils and fluffy Easter chicks. A raffle and a Guess the Mini Eggs in the jar competition were held to raise vital funds. There were prizes for pets like delightful dog beds and grooming kits. And for owners there was fine champagne and ipad accessories! Prizes were kindly donated by local businesses and customers all keen to support such a great cause. To date the amount raised is £350 and still rising! Store proprietor Claire Sellors said “We wanted to make it worthwhile, with a prize to interest every individual helping us raise as much as possible. We have been overwhelmed by our suppliers generosity and that of local companies such as PCM IT and Forge Physiotherapy plus customers Julia Michael and Maggie Kroll for their much appreciated support and w o n d e r f u l donations. An enormous thank you to them and to all our big hearted customers we really could not have raised such a fantastic amount for the Air Ambulance without your kindness and support.” ceiving the star Tracy Minion re trimmers lse prize of Wo ley

‘Please help me and my friends’ woofs Solo Readers may recall a Nottinghamshire animal rescue charity recently appealing for a permanent home for a friendly female dog who - from being rehomed, was homeless again. Despite best efforts, Solo is still waiting for that special someone and home – along with many other animals in the care of Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Aged nine years, this gentle-natured terriercross is playful and well-socialised. A true family dog, Solo likes plenty of company, routine and daily walks – and is already microchipped, spayed and vaccinated. Are you that special someone for Solo - or know someone who is? If so discover more about her by calling 07946-545256 – leaving a message if necessary with your postcode and contact details for the adoption volunteer’s response - or email admin@aaru.org.uk. As is standard for the charity, her potential home would be pre-checked to ensure a good match. Solo’s care continues to be provided meanwhile by Animal Accident Rescue Unit – which is entirely run by volunteers spanning drivers, telephonists and fundraisers. This small charity, however, urgently needs more volunteers and of all roles, fostering is currently the most pressing: a truly rewarding role making a huge difference to an individual animal’s future! If you can offer even a short-term refuge to care for a cat or dog until Animal Accident Rescue Unit can rehome it, please contact Chris on 0115-956 3799 leaving a message if necessary, with your contact details - or email admin@aaru.org.uk. Space in your home and heart are all that are needed – along with reliability, common-sense plus cat or dog care experience – though advice and guidance are given. Fostered cats need a safe and secure haven, as they are not allowed outdoors. For general information and all other matters, please call the charity’s lifeline number 0115-932 1555.
