Sunday 6 July 2014 A message from positively-perfect puss Archie

A local animal charity is championing the rewards of adopting loving but overlooked cats. One such cat, rescued thanks to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is six year old Archie (pictured). Found existing on Nottingham’s streets, Archie was in a bad state with a painful facial abscess - but following dedicated care is now fit and healthy. As with all the charity’s cats, Archie was FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) tested. As he tested positive, he and the charity are taking this opportunity to explain FIV – with the aim that he and others can enjoy new homes. As an experienced volunteer explains: ‘FIV should definitely not be confused with FeLV (Feline Leukaemia); they’re two entirely different viruses. They’re mentioned together as vets test for both together, but whilst FeLV affects health and lifespan, FIV most certainly does not.’ Archie is a most friendly cat and is hoping someone will see beyond his FIV-status to the affectionate, healthy boy he is! He is neutered, micro-chipped, flea and worm treated and litter-trained. To share your life with Archie, ring 0115-9984307 (only to be used for Archie enquiries), leaving a message with your postcode and contact details, or email admin@aaru.org.uk. For other enquiries email as above or call 0115-9321555 including offering cat fostering - which the charity urgently needs.

Opens 24th April

Have you heard about the NEW Hearing Aid Centre opening in Mapperley? Ian and Alan are pleased to announce the opening of their new hearing care service in Mapperley. They have helped thousands of people in Nottingham hear their friends and family and lead much happier and fuller lives. (see Damien’s testimonial below). Why would you seek help from Nottingham hearing centre? We have number of unique services which can help people with hearing related problems; let’s just look at the first 5 that spring to mind. 1. Experience and Trust - helping people hear more has been a vocation and passion since 1936 – in short we enjoy what we do, helping people hear clearly again. Hearing better means less stress and fatigue! 2. Local Caring Services – the most professional and successful hearing care provision can only be delivered by experts in your own community (don’t be fooled by those claiming be serving this part of Nottingham from afar).

3. 100% Satisfaction Guarantee – if you are not happy then we will provide a 100% refund! 4. Independent – our independence guarantees you will always have access to very latest and most advanced hearing aid technology. 5. Lifetime aftercare programme – last on the list but by no means the least important; simply we are on call when you need us; no switchboard; a human will always answer your telephone call. If you have a hearing aid from us already you will understand how valuable a quick and thorough visit to keep you hearing your best is really, really important. Why not put us to the test - call us today on (0115) 951 70 50 for a FREE HEARING TEST. We also repair hearing aids or you may just be in need of a no obligation appointment just for information. We can make you an appointment at Plains View Surgery, 57 Plains Road, Mapperley, Nottingham, NG3 5LB or arrange a FREE Home visit.

Damien Simms upgraded to the New invisible Widex ‘Dream’ and was shocked by the difference... “It’s a whole new world for me. I can hear music like I remember it used to sound. Family and friends have noticed that my own speech is much improved and I am now much more confident. I am even hearing foreign languages better and was able to converse with more French people on my last trip to France! I feel so much more confident in all situations. My tiny new hearing aids also link automatically by Bluetooth to my mobile phone when it rings and they can also stream music straight from my iPhone to my hearing aids - in both ears at the same time. I think I can now hear phone calls clearer than anyone because I hear the phone call in both ears at once with no background noise getting in the way of the conversation”

What three things would you like to do if you had the time and money? Running my business and caring for my 7 year old son leaves me very little time. If I had more time, I would like to: 1. Get back into amateur dramatics. 2. Finish the novel I keep starting 3. Learn to play the piano – I started when I was young but didn’t like practising and gave up very quickly.

Are you thinking of booking your next holiday? Then let me introduce myself, I’m Samantha from Designer Travel. Ever dreamed of sipping champagne whilst watching the sunset over Ayres Rock, swimming with Reef sharks on The Great Barrier Reef or scaling Sydney Harbour Bridge.?........well, there is no time like the present to start planning that trip of a life time to Australia. The Australian dollar offers an excellent conversion against the pound which means you will have more money to spend. Australia has to be one of my favourite countries, having spent a length of time working and travelling there. I feel I really got to understand the geography and the infrastructure of the country and learnt lots about the people who lived there. You may only have 2-3 weeks to spare or maybe you are planning on staying for months, one thing you can be sure of is that you will

have the holiday of life time and some magical experiences that are assured to last forever. Australia as a country is so diverse in what it has to offer the traveller .... If you love the buzz of a city its hard to choose between for example Sydney or Melbourne. Sydney has an amazing skyline, with The Harbour Bridge and Opera house, plus its vibrant night life & Melbourne offers its quaint trams that take you around the city, you can also visit areas like St Kilda with its arty vibe and cafe culture. If you are visiting in February why take in the Australian Tennis Open ? For those of you who love the water , its a must to dive or snorkel The Great Barrier Reef or if you prefer to keep dry why not try a few days sailing around the beautiful tropical Whitsunday Islands? There are 74 of them to choose from.

Beaches & surfing are a way of life in Australia. Grab a beer or milk shake and watch the surfers catching the waves, it really is amazing to watch ! The wild life is so varied & interesting and you have the opportunity to see first hand some of the amazing wildlife at the many sanctuaries, or on a rainforest tour and boat trips are also popular. My favourite experience was going to Phillip Island and sitting in the dunes and watching the famous Fairy penguins pop up out of the sea and come and nest in the dunes, they waddle past like you aren’t there! I could go on forever. So what are you waiting for ? Get planning that trip of a life time...

Help Wanted to Put Notts Brownies in the Picture Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is looking for help to build a library of pictures covering 100 years of Brownies across the county. This year marks the centenary of the formation of Brownies, which is the section of Girlguiding specifically for girls aged 7-10. Activities to mark the milestone are taking place all over the UK and one of the projects here in Nottinghamshire is to compile a digital photo-album showing Brownies in action over the decades. The pictures will also be used to support news stories about the Brownies’ celebrations, and the best ones will be sent to ITV Central News for a feature later in the year. ‘We’re asking people to scour their attics and old photograph albums to find archive pictures of local Brownies and their leaders,’ says Aspley Guide Leader Kayleigh Hunt, who is managing the project for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The pictures should be scanned and sent to us by e-mail, accompanied by brief details as to who’s in the picture and when or where it was taken. The images will be added into our Big Brownie Photo-Album, creating a unique record of Brownies in Notts.’ K a y l e i g h stresses that she is not asking for treasured original photographs to be sent in. ‘We need digital files only, preferably jpgs,’ she says. ‘But anyone without access to a scanner is welcome to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help get their pictures added to our album!’ Images and queries should go to Kayleigh Hunt at pr@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org. uk

Ella’s Teen Talk:

Handling Friends

They say that you can’t choose your family, but what about your second family? What about the family that you spend every ‘working’ day of Ella Higginbotham aged 16 the week with? This family can definitely be your own personal pick and for lots of us it takes many years to perfect; swapping and changing friendship groups in primary school and ending up with a new best friend every day. However in our teenage years we seem to have grown out of this and we all have friends that are there to stay- our second family. I am lucky enough to have found a group that are as wacky as me. You can’t have friends that don’t understand your weird ways (and you of course have to trust them to not tell everyone else these weird ways!). I see some friendship groups that constantly argue over silly things and it’s impossible to keep up with who is friends with who or who took who’s side- it must be exhausting! If you can’t stick with your friends for longer than a week without some sort of dispute then maybe they aren’t your ‘best friends for life’ after all. With the stress of school and families that some teens have to live with, a solid friendship group is needed for that support and release when you just need a laugh! In secondary schools, everyone always pictures the stereotypical friendship divide: the nerds, the jocks, the popular group. But is that realistic? Are we living in ‘Mean Girls’? Maybe to some extent but in the big picture, we are all just sleepy teenagers that turn up to school and complain together about being there. The biggest stereotypical problem is that you can barely walk down the corridor with a member of the opposite sex without being attacked with wolf whistles and questions about if you are a new couple. Sure, some people tease, but really, after five years in school, they should have realised that you Next are not a new couple and just friends! Basically, friends can torment you sometimes but that’s what they’re there for! Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was serious the whole time; that doesn’t appeal to me! If you can’t have a laugh with and get support from your friends then what is the point?!

KILLER FILLERS

In a previous life I used to own a sandwich bar and we always made all our sandwich fillings from scratch. Here are some of the best sellers. These would make great fillers for jacket spuds, cobs, wraps, salad bowls and of course sandwiches.

Coronation Chicken

1 chicken small onion - finely chopped 1tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric 2 tbsp tomato puree 5 tbsp red wine 1 lemon - rind & juice 2 tbsp apricot jam ¾ pint mayo

Poach the chicken. Once cooked & cooled strip meat from bones. Gently fry the onion in some oil. When soft add all the spices and tom puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, lemon rind & juice. Cook for 5 mins. Add the jam and leave to cool. When cool - strain and then mix with the mayo and pour over the chicken. Mushroom Paté

Corned Beef Crunch

200g tin corned beef ½ red pepper - diced 2” cucumber - diced 1 stick celery - diced ¼ red onion - diced 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp horseradish sauce black pepper

Mash the corned beef up with a fork. Mix with all the vegetables. Mix the mayo & horseradish and stir into the mix. Season to taste. The crunch mix works well with tuna, cheese and cream cheese.

200g mushrooms - sliced 1 small onion - chopped 15g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic - chopped small bunch parsley 1 tbsp sherry 200g cream cheese grated nutmeg, salt & pepper, lemon juice

Melt butter & oil in pan. Cook onion & garlic gently til soft. Add mushrooms & cook for 5 mins. Add sherry & boil rapidly until all liquid gone. Cool the mixture then add to a food processor with the parsley, seasoning & cream cheese. Whizz to desired consistency. Place in serving dish & refridgerate for 2 hours.

The National Gardens Scheme Gardens Open For Charity May has a lot to offer garden lovers in Nottinghamshire. The gardens have awoken from their winter slumbers and are offering exceptional visions of colour, perfume, textures and in some cases sounds. Take the opportunity to visit one of more of the local treasures and whilst doing so support The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) in raising money for good causes such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Help the Hospices. All NGS gardens are inspiring and enjoyable places to visit, ranging from small back gardens to spacious country ones. They will appeal to keen gardeners and casual visitors alike: everyone will enjoy and benefit from the beauty and peace of a lovingly tended garden. 7 COLLYGATE : Swingate, Kimberley, NG16 2PJ - Opening Monday 5th May 1pm to 5pm. Whatton, twinned with Finland? The Cranmer Company of Singers, which rehearses in Whatton, is putting on a special concert with The Vanaja Chamber Choir from Finland. This exciting collaboration came about because while living locally and working as an au pair, Taru Perolta sang with the Cranmer Singers. Now Deborah Davies, their Musical Director, is welcoming Ismo Savimake and his choir all the way from Finland to the Vale of Belvoir. The two choirs will be performing in a unique concert on Saturday 7 June 2014, starting at 7.30pm. The beautiful parish church of Bottesford will be filled with delightful sounds – a varied programme, mixing sacred and secular, with organ and piano, and likely to include the combined choirs singing firm favourite Zadok the Priest (Handel), and royal wedding choice I Was Glad (Parry). Ismo is planning to take the audience on a journey from Finland to Engand through Sweden, Norway and Estonia – rare treats, plus parts of the hauntingly lovely Stabat Mater by Karl Jenkins. Ticket price: £8 adults, £5 children and those on income related benefits, to include a glass of wine/ juice at the interval. It is wise to book in advance by phoning 01949 850364, though they may be available on the door. Cranmer Company of Singers have engagements in Winchester, York and Spain this summer as well as being booked to sing at a few local weddings

Music For Everyone invites young people to sing at the Albert Hall, Nottingham! Nottingham based music charity, Music For Everyone, will be hosting inspiring singing workshops for primary school children on the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, with an exciting concert in Nottingham’s prestigious Albert Hall on Sunday 18 May. The singing course and concert called Vocals, due to take place at Nottingham Trent University & the Albert Hall, Nottingham, is open to all singers aged 5 – 12. Conductor Helen Hayes said “Our Vocals courses are really good fun and a great introduction to singing. We invite

any young people interested, to come along and give it a try! This time we will be singing great songs for all ages including songs from Matilda the Musical, Jack and the Beanstalk (a musical inspired by the ‘Revolting Rhymes’ written by Roald Dahl) and for very young singers The Three Billy Goats Gruff!” It is a great event for beginners because they have plenty of time to rehearse before Vocals with the music resources we post out before the event. It also gives our returners the opportunity to build on their past experience.

Controversy at Gedling Country Park by Brian Cluff With some months to go before its official opening in the autumn, there is already considerable disquiet and controversy over the Borough Council’s landscaping of the former colliery site. Phase One of the work to turn it into a country park has demanded some widening and firming of paths to improve safety and ease of access. However walkers are finding the whole site criss-crossed with 3-metre wide unsightly roadways instead of the grassy footpaths that were a much-loved feature of the area, with many of the new trees destroyed in the process. It is difficult to reconcile such intrusive and destructive changes to the land with the Council’s declared intention of keeping it as a cherished nature reserve. Feelings are running high. Many local residents familiar with the site have agreed to serve on a ‘Friends of Gedling Country Park’ group, but even before the first meeting in April, several had already disassociated themselves from the group in protest at the insensitive nature of the changes. They believe that the Park deserves a much lighter touch that not only respects the wildlife that has populated the area since the pit’s closure, but more closely reflects the attitude of nature-lovers and walkers who want to feel part of that environment. They want to see the wild deer, stoats, hares, foxes and bats, the birds (both common and rare immigrants) and the wealth of wild flowers that have blossomed there as nowhere else. But not from wide roadways that look like an inviting race-track to cardrivers and motor-cyclists, some of whom have already used it and put walkers in danger. This Park could have been preserved as an attractive Nottinghamshire asset, managed with a light touch to preserve its distinctive qualities and allow residents to enjoy it under carefully managed conditions. The Council’s decision to make this an ordinary country park, with wide lanes and a children’s playground, lacks vision. It is a lost opportunity to make it something far more worthy of Gedling’s and Nottinghamshire’s residents. If you want to contact Gedling Borough Council about this telephone 0115 901 3901 or email: parks@ gedling.gov.uk Councillor Peter Barnes, portfolio holder for environment said: “The park has been designed to make it accessible to as many groups of different people as possible, we’re particularly keen to create disabled access to the park and access to those with mobility difficulties and the wider paths makes this possible. “There is still plenty of landscaping to be done which will affect how the pathways look, including tree planting and the installation of verges along the paths. We’re also conducting extensive surveys over the summer which will outline our wildlife conservation programme for the park. “This site is at a very early development stage and we welcome comments from local residents, over forty people have joined the Friends of group and whilst we appreciate that we cannot meet everyone’s expectations, we’re working very closely with residents and our colleagues at Nottinghamshire County Council to ensure that this park is a place all local residents can enjoy.”

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team..... The longer days and warmer weather makes us think about the summer holidays. But this year, as we look forward to a season of sport with the World Cup, don’t let crime kick off. As the days heat up and the evenings stay light the trips to the pub tend to increase. A quick pint after work, a few drinks in the beer garden on a Sunday afternoon, a pub dinner with the family. And of course we have some late nights coming up with the football. But don’t score an own goal by losing control. Drink in moderation and walk away from confrontation. Your judgement can be skewed under the influence of alcohol. Don’t lose your cool. Remember, we don’t hand out red cards, we deal in jail terms when it comes to violence.

secure at all times. It’s tempting to leave your windows open when you nip to the shop, or the back door unlocked as you lounge on the lawn. A thief can be in and out in minutes and the first you’ll know of the intrusion is your car missing from the drive or your laptop gone from the table.

Tackle thieves by making sure valuables are out of sight. Even something as innocuous as a coat or lunchbox on the back seat of your car could be enough for an opportunist. They don’t care if it puts them off-side.

Score a hat-trick against theft this season by doing the following: Lock up; Don’t leave valuables on display, including electrical cords; and Report suspicious or unusual activity around homes and vehicles to police on 101 or 999 if a crime is taking place. Call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Remember, if you’re taking a trip to an unfamiliar place this summer, revise your defence strategy and read up on the Park Mark approved car parks which are an estimated 50 times safer than parking on the street. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of those odds? Follow this simple advice and blow the final whistle on criminals this summer. Remember to catch us at road show events across the county over the next few months, where you can get the upper hand on security by picking up some crime prevention advice from our officers. Richard Richardson & Cliff Mill by Bob Massey

Cliff Mill was one of two mills in Lowdham. It can trace its history back to 1663 when it was called Bakers Mill. In 1792, when it was owned by Lambert and Co, it caught fire and burnt to the ground leaving only the outer walls and water wheel in existence. By 1799 it had been rebuilt as it is mentioned in the memories of Richard Blincoe, who at seven, was a workhouse apprentice. Blincoe was sent to Lowdham to work at the mill and in his book, published in 1830, he describes his time and the conditions at the mill. It is thought that Charles Dickens based his story of Oliver twist on Blincoe’s tales. In 1802 Lamberts closed the mill and Blincoe and the other apprentices were sent to Manchester. The mill eventually came into the hands of Richard Richardson. He was born in Thurgaton in 1829. In 1851, aged 22, he moved to Kirk Gate, Newark where he worked as a statistics clerk. He had a great love of machinery and engineering problems in general. By 1856 he had made sufficient money to move to the Cliff Mill at Lowdham where he was a ‘miller’ employing four men. His sister Jane was living with him as house keeper and he was able to employ Mary Marshall as a general servant. This period saw the beginning of steam power and the industrial revolution. In July 1856 it was reported that a designer by the name of Jackson was building a steam engine for Richardson. The engine was to be constructed at Woodward and Horsfalls of Langley Mill. There appears to have been some falling out or dispute with this

order, as at the end of the same month Richardson wrote to the Nottingham Guardian saying that no such order had been placed so it is unlikely that the mill had a steam engine at this time. Rifle shooting was encouraged in the mid 1800’s as a useful skill for men in times of war. Richardson embraced this interest and in December 1859 he became one of the founding members of the Epperstone Volunteer Rifle Company. His role was Secretary. By 1867 he had become Colour Sergeant of the company and enjoyed a reputation as a good shot, winning the shooting competition in June of that year. In 1865 Richardson was working on new methods of manufacture and drew up a patent for a new method of manufacturing felt. 1877 was a good year for Richardson. He married Priscilla Howlet that year. He was also sufficiently recognised by the local communities to become a member of the Grand Jury appointed to the assizes. Richardson also filed another patent for the connecting of rods and tubes and the manufacture of wood screws and other spikes and pins in December of the same year. Things did not remain good however as by August 1880 he had become bankrupt and had to sell the Cliff Mill. The money from the sale meant that he could clear all his debts by the following June. He died only three years later aged 55 on the 14th September 1883 leaving an estate of £660 18/-.

Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Group Celebrate Their 47th Anniversary

A Club with Ambition...

A charity in the East Midlands is celebrating its 47th Anniversary. They help people who are approaching retirement by providing seminars which cover finance, health, legal advice, safety, security, income tax, consumer rights, volunteering, pensions, benefits and how to occupy leisure time. There are many important changes in legislation which will affect State Retirement Pension date/ages and full details will be explained on the seminars. This will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. The recent budget proposals will also be explained in full during the sessions. During the course, each delegate receives a Resource Pack and a 1:1 with each speaker to discuss any personal queries. The Course Leader (always a retired person) is in attendance for the whole of the time and can give first hand experience and help. The 3 Day Seminars are held each month and a charge is raised to cover the admin. costs. It is recommended that people attend within 3 years of retirement so that they can plan ahead. The next Seminar is to be held on 23rd, 24th, 25th June and places must be booked in advance as lunch is included. All the dates for 2014 are on the website. Full details at www. ndprc.org.uk or ring the office for an Information Pack. Tel: 0115 922 3824. Bookings can be made on-line for Pre-Retirement or Mid-Life Seminars. For NHS Staff, special courses are held 3 times a year in March, July and October. A Nomination form will need to be completed to book a place on these courses.

The Robin Hood Probus Club is a club with ambition to grow. For pre-retirement, partially retired and retired men. Why not come along and sample a monthly Tuesday lunch at The Longbow Public House, Calverton Road, Arnold, Nottingham? What does the club offer?
