Such is the growing demand for the Notts Guided Walks booklet, its circulation for 2016 has been pushed up to nearly 7,000 across the County, backed by a comprehensive web-site. Once again generously funded mainly by the Big Lottery, the Partnership has distributed its booklets to County and City libraries, information centres, visitor centres and country parks throughout the County. Most of the walks are short – up to about 4 or 6 miles, but with a few of 7 to 8 miles. As the booklets contain a large section of Health Walks for less able or recovering walkers, many health centres will receive copies too. These shorter walks are taken by trained leaders and organised by the county boroughs as part of a national scheme. Each of these guided walks will also be featured on the Notts Guided Walks’ website at www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk which is updated with new walks during the year. It contains several well-illustrated selfguided walks in attractive areas for those who prefer to walk at their own pace, using downloaded instructions. Click on the ‘SelfGuided’ section of the web-site for further information. Just a small amount of regular exercise can make a huge improvement to a sedentary lifestyle, especially when linked to the friendly social outdoor atmosphere of a small walking group. Life is good for walkers!

SKN Heritage Museum is more than a museum. It’s a unique organisation dedicated to commemorating and celebrating the Caribbean contribution to life in Nottingham. History and heritage isn’t only found in the pages of a book or in a museum, it’s about our lives, the things we do everyday, the objects we use and treasure and the traditions and values we hold dear. Through a range of exhibitions and events the SKN Heritage Museum brings to life the history of Nottingham’s Caribbean culture. The museum is about the lives of people, ordinary people with extraordinary stories. With your help, we want to tell these stories. We are inviting volunteers to participate and contribute to the work of our museum, discovering and sharing Caribbean history, heritage and culture in fun, exciting and original ways. You don’t need any experience or qualifications, just a willingness to learn. Who knows? It could even be the first step in an exciting new career. Whether you want to help us with research and documentation, or simply have a story or artefact you think needs sharing, please get in touch with us at sknheritagemuseum@outlook.com, or call us on 07469 189550.

Oaks restaurant and bar is well situated in the heart of Nottingham. They serve simple, locally sourced meat cooked over a wood fired grill, and boy do they do a good job! As you would expect from the name there is an abundance of oak everywhere. From quirky tables and chairs to the walls! Large chandeliers of candles, along with the open flame grill, give this place a really cosy, relaxed feel. Service was friendly and attentive and Marcos, the manager, made sure all the customers were well looked after. This is the second review where the toilets are a must see - must be the new thing! The menu, while not massive, is well chosen. In our opinion, better to have a select few choices but done well, than a huge array of mediocre offerings. To start, we had some lovely quail Scotch eggs and a real beauty, baked Lincolnshire poacher cheese with toast. Despite many attempts, we have been unable to replicate this at home. We followed this with a tasty honeydew beer and black pepper chicken that has clearly been well marinated and king prawns with herbs and chilli which was really impressive. The grilled chicken bites and hand-cooked chips were “like no other chicken we have ever tasted” according to the children - high praise indeed! Even the desserts are made with locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed apple tarte tatin with toffee apple ice cream along with a selection of other delicious ice creams.
Liquid refreshments are chosen with equal care. There is a great selection of craft beers and for all those cocktail lovers out there, the restaurant’s range of unique cocktails is available for just £4.50 each between Monday and Friday – happy days! OAKS also has several other offers during the week. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays diners can enjoy Rump Day – an 8oz Sirloin steak, handcooked chips and a glass of wine for £13.50. Diners on Saturdays can soak up the weekend from 12pm till 4pm with Bottomless Brunch, a choice of tasty brunch options with the option of unlimited Bloody Mary or Prosecco. The restaurant also offers a special Sunday roast menu, where kids eat free and meals start from £10. With live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there are lots of reasons to give this place a go. Great quality food, bubbles, beer and a brilliant atmosphere – what’s not to like?

Go Al Fresco! Summer has finally arrived and it’s time to head out for bit of al fresco dining. Who doesn’t love a picnic or “pique-nique” as it first appeared in the 1692 edition of the “Origines de la Langue Française”. The piquenique was a kind of French version of the “bring your own” style meal, with everyone contributing a course or wine. The first reference in English in 1748, suggested the “picnic” was a meal eaten outdoors but a more elegant affair than the traditional farm-worker’s meal eaten during a break from the harvesting. Whatever its origins,
most of us can’t resist the lure of a sunny afternoon in the park or by the river. The challenge for us, of course, is the Great British summer weather. As soon as the sun comes out and the grass is dry enough to sit on, we need to be ready to seize the moment, grab the picnic rug and head out. Take a break from the traditional cheese & pickle and meat-paste sandwich staples and try one of these really simple, but a bit special, picnic suggestions to make the most of those fleeting summer days.

Picnic Sandwich Loaf This is one of my favourite picnic sandwiches, inspired by the young Irish singer and foodie, Donal Skehan. It is a bit more effort than your usual butty but well worth it (amount of filling does depend on the size of your loaf!) 1 long ciabatta loaf, sliced in half lengthways Handful of baby spinach leaves Few slices of roasted red pepper from a jar 4 slices prosciutto or Serrano ham Handful of basil Ball of Mozzarella, sliced Half a red onion, finely sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp Dijon mustard Slice the ciabatta loaf in half lengthways, brush with olive oil on the cut surface and place, crust side down, under a hot grill for a few minutes until slightly browned and lightly toasted. Put the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and mustard in a bowl, then whisk them together until combined. Drizzle the bottom slice with about half the dressing and then arrange the rest of the ingredients in layers, starting with the spinach and red onion. Drizzle over the rest of the dressing
and place the other half of the ciabatta on top. Press down on the sandwich to squash all the layers together, wrap in greaseproof paper or baking parchment and tie it together with string. If you have something suitable to place on top for half an hour (I used a heavy wooden chopping board) that helps to stop the sandwich coming apart when sliced. Cut and serve in slices for the perfect picnic snack
Easy Lamb Koftas If you have a portable BBQ or can find a disposable one, add a hot dish to your picnic with these really simple Koftas. 500g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander Handful of chopped fresh Coriander 3 fat garlic cloves crushed 2 tsps dried Chilli Flakes (or chopped fresh red chillies) 1 tbsp chopped mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper oil for brushing Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and combine well. Divide into 8 balls, then roll each ball on a board to form a sausage shape. Thread onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil. Cook on a hot griddle or on your portable
barbecue for 4/5 mins each side. Ensure the meat is well sealed before turning to ensure they don’t stick to the grill. Serve with natural yoghurt, salad and flatbreads.
Portable Raspberry Ripple Cheesecake How do you transport a cheesecake in a picnic basket? Easy, make it in jar! 150g buttery biscuit (I used Fox’s Butter Crinkles) 150g cream cheese 150g double cream 5 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g raspberries 6 smallish lidded jars (jam jars for example) Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a blender or place in a freezer bag or similar and crush with a rolling pin. Divide the biscuits between the jars. Whisk the cream cheese, cream, 4 tbsp icing sugar and vanilla extract until softly whipped. Tip half the raspberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and purée with a fork. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining raspberries, secure the lids and chill until it’s time to go. Transport in a cool box or bag.
Dangerous Crossing by Bob Massey
In the 18th century, the only way across the River Trent at Gunthorpe was by ferry or in dry weather by fording the river.
River Trent at Gunthorpe
The river could be treacherous at times. The current was fast in the centre especially at times of flood. Crossing at night was particularly hazardous. In February 1795, the river flooded to the extent that a house at the side of the Trent at Gunthorpe was completely immersed in water right up to the eves. Animals were drowned, winter crops were destroyed and the river was impassable, isolating people on one side. Even in calm weather the river could be dangerous. In July 1794 four boys from Thurgarton were enjoying swimming in the Trent at Gunthorpe when one ventured out to the centre of the river and was taken by the current. One of the other boys swam after him in an attempt to save him but both were swept away and drowned. Their bodies were found further down stream and both were buried two days later in Thurgarton church yard, both in the same grave. The ferry itself could also be dangerous. In February 1794 Mr Kelham Neal, a woolcomber from Kneighton, son of local farmers Thomas and Elizabeth Neal, was on his way home. On reaching the river he started crossing with his horse on the ferry at Gunthorpe. He had his hand through the bridle of the horse to steady it on the crossing. When they reached the middle of the river all of a sudden the horse panicked. The horse jumped into the river pulling Kelham, who still had his arm through the bridle, into the water. The horse managed to swim to the bank and was recovered. Kelham was caught up in the current and swept away. His body was never recovered. and he was not seen again.
Yet another tragedy is recorded in the following year, when late in the evening of Saturday 24th May 1795 the surgeon from Car Colston, Mr Thomas Blagg, was returning home after attending a call on the Gunthorpe side of the river. On reaching the river he tried to ford it on his horse, instead of calling out the ferry. Blagg proceeded to the middle of the river but the current proved to be too strong for the horse and as a consequence both were swept away and drowned. The building of the bridge in 1875 did not stop the problems of the ferry. The following year, in March 1876, Thomas, a publican in Gunthorpe, was taken to court by the Gunthorpe Bridge Company for ferrying passengers and animals across the river. The ferry had become part of the Bridge Act and was the property of the Bridge Company. The Bridge Company sued Thomas for damages, for lost revenue and for the use of the ferry, which they claimed was their property, to the sum of ÂŁ200. Thomas claimed that the contract with the original owner of the ferry, a Mr Palmer, had not yet expired and that its rights had been passed by him to Thomas so he had every right to use it and charge passengers. In the end the company said they would accept 90 weeks rent at ÂŁ1 a week for use of the ferry. The judge, however, found for Thomas without costs and dismissed any further claims by the company.

Magazines is 10 Still going strong and getting stronger thanks to all our advertisers, readers and contributors. It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago that we started ng magazines, or ‘ng5’ as we were known back then!!
With us from the start... “I set up my business at the same time as ng mags and have been with them right from the start. They have been the best form of advertising for me, and the staff are always friendly and ready to help, such a useful magazine”. Mark Maggs - All Weathers Plumbing
“I met Cat & Ali 10 years ago when our business manager at the bank introduced us. They have always been good to me and I get a lot of customers from the mags. Some have been with me the whole 10 years and I’m still getting regular ones now” Andy Crowley - AKJ Contracts.
10 years of helping local businesses, providing a service to our readers and supporting the local community, it has been an amazing journey. We started distributing the ng5 in Arnold in May 2006 to 5000 homes and businesses, and I mean distributing - we used to post all the mags ourselves in the early days. This would be impossible now because we deliver 8 magazines to 93,000 so rely on a lot of our readers who have become distributors for us. We would like to say a great big thank you to all our readers, distributors, contributors and advertisers, without whom this would not have been possible.

Easylink – making the City more accessible! Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have launched a new and accessible network of Easylink buses for people who may struggle using existing local bus and tram services. Easylink is operated by Nottingham C o m m u n i t y Transport and provides a door to door service, from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday, travelling anywhere up to ten miles from Nottingham city centre. Fully wheelchair accessible buses allow passengers to get to the shops, leisure activities, visit friends, medical appointments or anywhere else they want to go. Easylink buses offer: • Regular, fully-trained and friendly drivers who can help passengers on and off the vehicle and help carry any shopping to their door. • Brand new fully wheelchair accessible vehicles with a rear lift and space for up to two wheelchairs as well as up to eight conventional seats. • Low-cost travel for concession card holders and free travel for their escort or companion if they need one. • The ability to book a journey up to seven days in advance for a one-off trip, six weeks in advance for regular journeys or three months in advance for a trip to a medical appointment. All people need to do to make use of the service is register with Nottingham Community Transport. Unless they already have a Nottingham City Council Mobility Citycard concession card or Nottinghamshire County Council Disabled Concessionary pass then they are automatically a member of the Easylink scheme. When a passenger books a trip they will be given an exact price for that door-to-door to journey. Journeys can be booked by phone, text or email.

Gedling Borough Council Budget Plans At its meeting in March, Gedling Borough Council approved its budget and spending plans for the year ahead. Items approved in the budget included a council tax freeze for the third year running, a new visitor's centre for Gedling Country Park and a pay award to all but the most senior members of staff. The council is faced with further reductions in the money it receives from Central Government amounting to £2.4 million. This is on top of a £1.9 million cut in Government grant that has already taken place. Since 2011, the council has been successful in delivering £4.2 million of savings and plans to invest in a new visitor centre, toilets and play facilities at Gedling Country Park; provision of new cemetery land at Carlton Cemetery and a replacement artificial football pitch at Redhill Leisure Centre. Free swimming sessions and a free period of bulky waste collections, along with a range of activities to create new homes and jobs were all part of a wide ranging agenda debated by Gedling councillors. Also approved is a pay review of all but the most senior members of staff, to bring the pay of Gedling employees closer to the average pay of other councils. John Clarke added "Despite funding cuts, we remain ambitious for Gedling residents and are doing everything possible to kickstart the building of more houses and the creation of more jobs. We're also continuing our good work to support the most vulnerable in society and create a more compassionate Gedling. This extends to treating our own staff more fairly in terms of what we pay them which at the moment is significantly below what other Councils pay and what they deserve to be paid. We want the very best for Gedling residents and we can't achieve that if we continue to pay the worst"

In its first 365 days the park has had over 30,000 visitors who have walked, cycled, ran and walked their dogs around the former colliery site. The park boasts one of the top renewable energy solar farms in the country which over the last year has generated enough electricity to power 1,800 homes. The future of the park is also very bright with the announcement of plans for a £900,000 visitor’s centre and the installation of a children’s play area. Consultation has begun on the visitors centre and residents can now have their say on how the centre should be used by visiting the Gedling Borough Council website. Plans are also in place for toilets to be installed in the near future. The Friends of the Gedling Country Park group, set up when the park opened, has attracted nearly 900 members. The group have been involved in a number of projects to support the council to improve the park. Over the last year they’ve helped plant over 450 trees, organised clean ups, volunteering days and raised funds to help build a children’s play area in the park.

home & garden Council joins forces with Nottingham Playhouse to bring theatre to Gedling
Gedling Borough Council has given a £5,000 grant to Nottingham Playhouse to benefit borough residents over the next 12 months. Half of the grant money will go towards concessionary theatre tickets for younger and older age groups of residents. Young people aged 14-24 can benefit from 50% off ticket prices and older residents, aged 60 plus, can enjoy the same discount. The remaining £2,500 will be used to commission outreach educational theatre work in particular communities of the Gedling borough, including Netherfield, Newstead, Killisick, Daybrook and Bestwood Village. The discounted tickets initiative aims to make theatre more accessible to residents, whilst the outreach educational theatre will give members of communities a chance to take part in theatre workshops, which boost confidence and could provide a new hobby. Councillors Clarke and Fox released a joint statement, saying “This is an exciting partnership which we hope will grow in future and enrich residents’ lives. Theatre and the arts can have big positive effects on overall wellbeing and the community outreach theatre is a great opportunity to put this into practice.”

MUSICAL
If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: ali@ngmagazines.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.
WOODTHORPE SINGERS very
warmly welcomes new members, of all abilities. No auditions, no need to be able to read music. We sing a variety of light classical music and show songs. Rehearsals are in St Mark’s Church Hall, De Vere Gardens, Woodthorpe on Mondays 8.00 -9.30pm., weekly, term time only, culminating in a fund raising Concert for a chosen charity and a social evening for our members. For more information please ring our Musical Director Marjorie Rogers on 0115 9313965
Carlton Male Voice Choir
We have the Flint MVC coming on 16th July for a joint concert with us at St. Paul's Church, Carlton and on the 23rd July we are singing at the Bonnington Theatre on High Street Arnold for the Mayor's Charity.
Bingham and District Choral Society Following our Spring Concert performed jointly with Southwell Choral Society in Southwell Minster on 7th May, we hope to round off a successful year with a short, four-week singing course. This would be an ideal opportunity for non-members to get a flavour of singing with the choir and perhaps help them to decide whether they might like to join us for our 2016-2017 season beginning in September. Provisional dates for the short course are 18th May, 1st, 8th and 15th June. It will be informal and fun, culminating in a small concert for family and friends on the last evening. Guy Turner, our Musical Director, will be in charge and the sessions will take place at Carnarvon Primary School, Nursery Road, Bingham NG13 8EH from 7.15 to 9.30 pm. The total cost will be £20 per person. If you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Janet Chapman on 0115 9332834.
Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir is one of a handful of original colliery
male voice choirs surviving in the country. No stranger to prestigious venues such as the Royal Concert Hall and Albert Hall in Nottingham, Derby Cathedral and the Royal Albert Hall in London, the choir is equally at home in more modest settings. We especially enjoy the intimacy that promotes a very real emotional connection between choristers and audience - as well as allowing a sense of fun to develop at the appropriate moment! We delight in helping local charities raise much needed funds for their own needs. The choir has a very busy 2016 and in the next couple of months will be performing at: Alfreton Grange Arts College (21 May); Belper Arts Festival (St Peter’s Church 28 May); St Mary’s Church, Eastwood (5 June) with guests Braintree Male Voice Choir. Visit the web site at www.ecmvc.org – and come along and give us a try – new members always welcome!

Flash Bang Wallop!
Musicians get to bang on their own bass drum A year of fund-raising has enabled West Bridgfordbased Nottingham Concert Band to buy its own bass drum. The instrument was put through its paces on Saturday during a concert in Gedling’s All Hallows Church. ‘The concert was called A Splash of Spring Colour so we had great fun choosing a colour-themed programme,’ says Music Director Robert Parker. ‘And, to mark the drum’s debut, we played a medley from the musical Half a Sixpence. Remember the line ‘bang it on the big bass drum’ from Flash Bang Wallop? Well, the audience did!’ Nottingham Concert Band’s ‘drum fund’ was supported by Notts County Councillors Liz Plant and Gordon Wheeler, who both made donations from their Divisional Fund allowances. Now in its 25th year, Nottingham Concert Band is an independent community wind-band comprising sixty or so adult members across woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Rehearsals are held weekly in West Bridgford and enquiries about membership and concerts are always welcome call Jeff or Jill on 01949 860126, e-mail music@ nottinghamconcertband.org or log-on to www. nottinghamconcertband.org
Vivaldi and Haydn in Spring Saturday 14th May 2016 at St Peter’s Church, Ruddington NG11 6HA at 7.30 pm. Tickets £9 inc programme and refreshments. From 0115 9211451, Perkins Hardware, Ruddington, or on the door. www. spanglefish.com/ruddingtonanddistrictchoralsociety/
The Hucknall and Linby Brass Band continue with their
success after coming 4th in the Midlands Area Championship contest in second section. The band now look forward to working on new music for our summer engagements keeping up the great team spirit that we have. To see up coming events visit www.hlb.org.uk The band has current vacancies for a bass player and a percussionist but welcomes any new player of any age and standard to either join the training band or the main band.
