HOW TO FUEL YOUR FITNESS
To recover we need calories, we need fuel. By restricting this, you’ll be slowing progress. You will also feel awful for hours after exercise, while blood sugar levels are at their lowest.
Ever thought about how your diet is affecting your training?
We need a little protein and a little carbs/fat pretraining. This will set us up for a great session and also help us to perform at a higher level so we can rack up a higher calorie expenditure number. Ideally you want lower GI index carbs for slow release on energy to fuel your workout longer. For example, whole grain bread or porridge.
Diet is often an overlooked factor when planning your training. A common misunderstanding is that to be losing weight you need to deprive your body of what it needs. This could, and probably is, affecting how well you progress within your fitness goals. Some believe fasting before exercise improves results… the only thing it actually improves is how you feel during exercise. You’ll still burn the same number of calories and bodyfat whether you are fasted or fed. Feeding your body up to 60 minutes before exercise will improve ‘in session’ results and still counts towards your daily intake. You’ve just utilised the window before training to aid your output intensity. So, what about the window after training? This is where your energy levels will be at their lowest, again a common mistake is to think you shouldn’t feed the body after exercise or it will affect your results. Allow me to shine a little light here. Exercise is a stress induced by ourselves. We grow and gain in the recovery process (the resting phase).
Fuel pre and post exercise
Post-training, try to hit a good 20-30g of protein. We need this to start the repair process of damaged tissue. Now add in some carbs. After training a little of each, (high and low GI) is good. The high GI carb will raise blood sugar levels quickly therefore not leaving you feeling low and tired, the low GI carb will steadily release energy giving you an AWESOME post workout feeling. Fats at this point take a little longer to bring your energy level back up. If you are following a keto diet, fat can be used for energy but just expect a slower release. Here’s an idea for a great pre-workout smoothie. It doesn’t have to be chicken and rice everyday! PB and J Smoothie 1 vanilla protein scoop 1 tsp (30g) peanut butter 100g frozen strawberries 100g ice 200-250ml almond milk 15g agave Protein 33g Fats 21g Carbs 28g Cals 377

Yoga for Everyone Yoga is an Indian philosophy dating back thousands of years. The Sanskrit word yoga means unite and it was practised to create the union of the physical body, mind and spirit in order to reach enlightenment. Different paths of yoga were created in order to reach this state. One of these paths was called Hatha yoga and its purpose was to develop the body in preparation for further spiritual practice. These days, particularly in the west, we practice Hatha yoga. Classes largely focus on health and fitness but still with attention on how we feel in both our bodies and minds. This is achieved using physical exercises (asana), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation and relaxation. Yoga is for everyone and the benefits are immense. It helps us to relax, release tension from our bodies and deal with stress. It is energy giving, makes us stronger and more supple. If you are looking for a class suitable for your needs, local publications and websites such as www.localyogaclasse.co.uk, list classes in your area. Power Up Your Morning Routine With Breakfast Breakfast: the most important meal of the day? Or, if you aren’t a morning person then it’s more like, breakfast: that thing you should get up 15 minutes earlier for, but pressing that snooze button twice more feels far more important.
What can
Whether you live for a big breakfast, or eat it in a hurry, there is a good case for making your first dish of the day a more nutritious one. Why should I bother with breakfast? Here is the confusing part...breakfast may not actually be the most important meal of the day. This popular marketing slogan was invented in 1944 to sell more cereal. In fact, originally John Harvey Kellogg intended cereal to be the breakfast choice, not only to improve the health of Americans, but also to keep them from desiring sex. Yes, yes, you are reading this right. Mr Kellogg was a deeply religious and completely celibate being. This isn’t the only reason you should be spitting out your cornflakes. It turns out, skipping breakfast doesn’t actually make you fat. Research studies conducted in Bath indicate that in terms of weight, eating breakfast or skipping it makes no difference. Where eating breakfast does come into its own, however, is in improving comprehension, daytime energy and mood. So unless you want to be moody, fatigued and lacking in intelligence then skipping breakfast is not a great idea.

What should you eat for breakfast? Like any other meal, breakfast is a good opportunity to top up on some important micro and macronutrients. There are three things we need in large amounts in our diets: protein, fats and carbohydrates, these are our macronutrients. In addition, vitamins and minerals are essential but in much smaller quantities. To get the best out of that morning meal, consuming a balanced breakfast is the best option. “Balanced” simply means, a meal that contains protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in the correct quantities. In a nutshell, this doesn’t translate to cereal. To achieve this, protein is a great starting point but to truly hit all of the food groups of a balanced meal, just add vegetables. Vegetables are great sources of vitamins and minerals as well as carbohydrates. In “real life”, a balanced breakfast may look something like this: omelette with spinach, tomatoes and a slice of toast or a smoothie with protein powder, greens, flax seed and some frozen blueberries.

a helping hand Not just about transport...
There’s a lot more to Gedling Voluntary Transport Scheme (GVTS) than transport. Firstly, it’s about people. Getting out and about is what most people take for granted, but for people with walking difficulties or health-related conditions, it makes getting out a challenge and it’s very easy to just give up and become isolated. That’s where the transport service steps in to help. One passenger said: “Without this service, I would be housebound –it’s really comforting to know that you are there”. Around 200 people in Gedling rely on friendly and helpful volunteer drivers to get them to many different places from doctors and health visits to socialising and shopping and many more venues. The transport service connects people to their friends, family and communities helping to ease loneliness and keeping people involved, interested and contributing to their communities. New passengers join regularly, but GVTS is keen to spread the word to ensure anyone who could benefit is aware of the service. GVTS is always keen to welcome new customers and is always interested to hear from new voluntary drivers. If anyone is recently retired, or wants to give back to their community, then please get in touch and volunteer your driving services. Expenses and petrol are covered. Call the transport team on 0115 969 9060, email transport@rushcliffecvs.org.uk or visit our website at www.rushcliffecvs.org.uk

New Health Texting Service for Parents and Carers Across Notts
Parentline, a new text messaging service offering parents and carers across Nottinghamshire access to confidential health advice has been launched by Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Healthy Family Teams. With more and more people using hand held mobile devices, the new Parentline text messaging service is an easy way for parents and carers to confidentially ask for help about a range of issues, such as feeding and nutrition, emotional health and wellbeing, child development, behaviour difficulties and family health. They can also find out how to access other local services for example, School Health Team, breastfeeding support or health visitor led sessions. Parents and carers of children aged 0-19 can contact the text messaging service for advice on Parentline 07520 619919. The service does not replace face-to-face contact with Healthy Family Teams but aims to offer an alternative, accessible method of contact and a flexible way to provide support. Parentline is available from Monday to Friday 9.00am-4.30pm excluding bank holidays. Messages sent to the dedicated number are delivered to a secure website, and responded to by the Healthy Family Team. Texts are usually replied to within one working day. Automatic replies will be sent to any messages received out of hours explaining where to get help if their question is urgent, and when they can expect a response.

Share Your Experience of Cancer Care
My name is Holly and I’m proud to work for Macmillan Cancer Support. My job is to involve people who are living with cancer in Nottinghamshire in developing and improving local cancer services. The people I work with can be people who have cancer, their family members or carers. I also work with people who may not have cancer, but who can help Macmillan understand the barriers their community can face in accessing cancer services, and how Macmillan can help change this. Did you know that in 2017 there were 35,600 people in Nottinghamshire known to be living with cancer and that this number is set to double by 2030 to over 71,000. Macmillan is funding a variety of local services across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, including a £6 million investment in the Macmillan Cancer Partnership in Nottingham where we work alongside partners to deliver projects and services to the growing number of people who need them. Whatever cancer throws your way, we’d like to be right there with you and I would like to hear from people living with cancer, from all ages and communities, so that we can use their experience and knowledge to get services right. There are lots of ways to get involved, from taking part in discussion groups or interviews, becoming a community researcher, campaigning, volunteering or becoming a member of a patient panel. If you are interested, you can email me at hswinckels@macmillan.org.uk Need to talk? We’ll be right there with you by simply calling 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or we’re online 24/7 www. macmillan.org.uk

Justice for Justice by Bob Massey
In the 19th century, those being hung often went to the gallows quite meekly, resigned to their fate and sorry for the misdeeds that had brought them to this point. One exception was William Hill. William was born in Beckingham, Nottinghamshire in 1775, the son of John and Elizabeth Hill. The family moved to Lowdham where William grew up. He was a wild lad and was in trouble from an early age. He was soon associating with other like minded individuals causing problems in the village. William grew into a self-indulgent, violent and grossly immoral man. He was a labourer and extremely robust, strong and very muscular in appearance, standing 5’ 8” tall. He was intimidating and could be very threatening and violent when provoked. Hill was always fighting against authority.
any right to take his life for his actions and he refused to leave his cell. As a result it took six large men to forcibly drag him out and even then he nearly escaped their grasp. He was eventually dragged onto the cart and tied to the sides of the waggon to take him to the gallows. When he reached Gallows Hill at the top of Mansfield Road just outside the city walls (where the Rock Cemetery now stands) he was untied in order for the noose to be put around his neck. Immediately he was freed he jumped into the crowd surrounding the gallows, to try and make his escape. The sheriff’s men who were following the wagon had to strike him several blows about the head with the blunt end of their javelins to subdue him. In this semi-conscious state, still struggling and uttering the most foul language, he was forced to ascend the wagon again. With great difficulty, the hangman finally carried out the sentence.
Although he had an eye for the ladies, Hill’s reputation made them distance themselves from him, causing him great frustration. Several women who were the centre of his attention were attacked when they rejected him. One of these was a twelve year old girl. In 1803 William moved to Bole in Lincolnshire to work as an agricultural labourer for the summer. He had learned nothing from his experiences and had not attempted to mend his ways. On the 28th May, 1803 he brutally attacked and raped Sarah, the wife of his employer Thomas Justice, when she repelled his advances. He was caught and brought to trial in August 1803. He strenuously denied the charges but the jury were not convinced and found him guilty. Due the severity of the offence and his violence, the judge sentenced him to death. The Chaplin and various other people tried to explain to him the seriousness of the crime he had committed. He maintained throughout that his actions had all been justified. On the morning of his execution he refused to cooperate with the warders. He could not see that they had
After hanging, murderers bodies were usually given over to the medical profession for dissection. The crowd had little sympathy for such a violent character and cared little for his fate. William ended his days at the anatomy dissection table, for medical students to study. Here it was discovered that he was suffering from an advanced disease for which the only known treatment at the time was mercury. It would seem that he had been taking this poison in quantity as a cure for years. The combination of the disease and the mercury, over a long period of time would have affected his brain. This may well have accounted for his extreme violence especially if he had inherited the original complaint.
I am researching the history of the ng14 villages and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@ gmail.com or post via ng magazines.

Our diary is gradually filling up – and recently we performed at a fundraising event at Hilltop Catholic Church. We are pleased to add that our charity collection for YOUNG MiNDS is healthily building – in fact we have been able to send them £1300 already! In June we will be performing at a private function and on Saturday 6th July 2019 we will be one of the acts performing at the Underwood Festival, where we hope the sun will shine in support of all the many people providing entertainment, stalls and activities, and of course on the visitors! Other events are also on the horizon, hence our rehearsals are in full swing as we learn new items to add to our repertoire. Visit our website or look at our facebook page to see where we will be performing in the future – we look forward to seeing you.

A Thoroughly Modern Way To Work by Helen Jones Some recent research with millennials uncovered interesting responses in relation to how they would like to work given the option. 91% said that flexible working was important and 92% wanted the option of working from home. However 66% said they would want to work more in an office and nobody wanted to work from home exclusively. It set me thinking to how it used to be back in the day when I used to work in the field as an Area Manager for a large chain of chemist (not difficult to guess who). My geographic patch was from Bournemouth to Brighton and up into South London. In the days before mobile phones an administrator from Head Office would call the stores to check I’d been in and how long I’d stayed. I didn’t question the process but very often I would leave a store knowing I hadn’t achieved what was required but knew I had to get the other store visits clocked in before 5.30pm. This was so counterproductive in hindsight. Some stores required a lot of support and other managed very well with only minimum input. Had I not been targeted on the number of store visits and allowed to use my local knowledge I could have made so much more impact in the role. It’s all about trust. Trusting that you have employed the right person to do the job and allowing them the flexibility to make the correct decisions in order to deliver results. Does working from home mean that staff are slacking? Research shows that flexible working can help organisations attract talent, improve employee job satisfaction and loyalty, reduce absenteeism and improve well-being. And that is surely a good thing? Looking back I didn’t feel valued or trusted – I worked under the assumption that my employers were waiting to catch me out. I delivered results year after year but had there been more trust and flexibility in hindsight I know I could have achieved so much more.

Walks With Emily & Friends Caythorpe Circular Walk Walk distance: 4.2 miles Difficulty: Easy (although please note there are quite a few stiles) Starting point: The Black Horse Inn (car parking at the pub) NG14 7ED Caythorpe is about 30 mins drive from Nottingham city centre. This walk is particularly scenic and passes some great farm animals on the way. Start the walk by turning right out of the pub car park, until you reach a road bridge over the Dover Beck. You will see a small turn off into a field marked by a public footpath sign and a green dog waste bin. Take this turning, and follow it round. At the end of this path you will see a stile leading into a field of sheep, keep to the right of the field along the path and next to the beck. Carry on down the path and you will reach another stile. Go over it and through the gate directly on your right towards Mill Farm. Ahead, you’ll cross Mill Stream (there is a ford on the left you can walk through, but the water was quite high when we went) there is also a footbridge, you’ll be pleased to know! Continue down the farm track until you see another public footpath sign pointing left. Follow this along a clear fenced path (with a lake on your left and a ditch on your right). Eventually you’ll reach the Gonalston- Hoveringham road. Cross this and carry on down the footpath. There will be another lake on your left and ditch on your right. Keep walking until you see a footbridge on your right. Go across the footbridge and follow the path towards and through the Hoveringham Village cricket field. Walk around the edge of the field and up past the Reindeer Inn on your left towards the main road through the village. Carry on down the main road for about 150 yards until you reach Post Office Yard on your left. Directly opposite this and next to Laburnum Cottage there’s a footpath (marked public footpath). Follow it down until you reach a field. Follow the edge of the field round to a stile at the top right and then continue to follow the path over a series of stiles. Eventually you will come to
Lodgefield Lane - turn right down here until you reach Boat Lane. Turn left down Boat Lane and follow the road round the bend. You will now be able to see the River Trent. Keeping the river on your left, follow the path for about a mile past the car park until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and continue along the side of the river. Please note these fields are used to graze cattle, so you will need to keep your dog on a lead at this point. Continue until the hedgerow bends round to the right and you can see another gate in the distance. Follow the path next to the hedgerow and through a gate to another field. Keeping to the right-hand side, follow this up until you reach the main roadHoveringham Road. Continue down Hoveringham Road for a short distance until you reach the starting point, The Black Horse Inn.

pets House-Hunting Brothers Need Help Two young homeless cats are hoping that a repeat appeal will get them a home together. Simon in black, and ginger Alvin were rescued as kittens last year by local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Whilst they have seen other cats rehomed – they are still waiting. Currently with a fosterer, both are ideal feline companions and as their fosterer says: ‘Alvin and Simon have been completely overlooked, it’s sad and surprising because they’re both only a year old. They’re both so friendly and would love a quieter home, without children ideally, and to settle into their first proper abode!’ As with all the charity’s cats, both cats are micro-chipped, flea and worm treated, littertrained plus vaccinated – their new owners are responsible for further vaccinations. Simon and Alvin would love to hear from potential adopters. To arrange to meet them and for details, please either call 01159321555 or email admin@aaru.org.uk - leaving your contact details clearly. A volunteer will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck and cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. The charity does not cover healthy strays/ unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www. animalaccident.org.uk.

Along with the Ford Mondeo, Jurassic Park and Power Rangers, last year Gary and I celebrated our 25th anniversary. Together for 25 years!!! Looking back it really is a miracle that we made it past 25 days. Here are some of our firsts:
First met – at a night club in London on Halloween, queuing for the cloakroom at the end of the night. Him to me: nice hot pants. Me to him (sarcastically): whose coat you wearing? Your dads? Him to me: my dad’s dead. To be fair, that could have gone better. First date – an Indian restaurant in Harrow. After a lovely meal he tells me he’s only got a tenner. Not being funny but even 25 years ago that was never going to cover the bill. Start as you mean to go on…
Did you know... • up until 1875 only 25 & 50 year anniversaries were celebrated • apart from silver, roses & iris are traditionally given for a 25th anniversary • the most common gift for a 25th anniversary is jewellery (hint, hint!!) First row – this coincided with our first weekend away in a quaint cottage somewhere in Wales. All weekend I kept setting him targets (in my head, not out loud). So, I would say to myself, if he doesn’t clear the dishes and wash
up, he’s dumped. Or, if he doesn’t make me a cup of tea, he’s dumped. Needless to say – he was dumped. First home – tiny little flat in London. When it came time to move we cleaned the flat from top to bottom and on the last night decided to “cook” ourselves a romantic meal, M&S Cumberland pie followed by a Heinz treacle sponge. Living the dream! Only trouble was, we failed to see the inch high black warning on the tin to “open this end” and the minute we stuck the tin opener in there was a liquid explosion of molten syrup that literally sprayed the whole kitchen. Our romantic night was spent scrubbing every inch of that kitchen. First proper holiday – never doing things by halves we decided to go on a world trip. Landing in our first destination we were so excited that we left the airport and got in a taxi before realising we had left our ruck sacks in the baggage reclaim. Not the best start. First child – all our friends thought we were a bit weird, having a baby. Clearly none of them had the first idea about parenthood. Presents I received in hospital after giving birth consisted of a set of pink lacy undies and a pot plant!! So, what do we put our longevity down to? I say patience, understanding and a live and let live attitude. Gary says wine!

Gedling Borough Council is set to freeze council tax and announces plans in its budget for investment in the borough to tackle knife crime, anti-social behaviour, fly tipping, dog fouling and street cleanliness. The budget also includes plans for investment in frontline services in the borough, including the introduction of a new Rapid Response Cleaning Team to further strengthen efforts to deal with litter, dog fouling and fly tipping as well as plans to employ an additional Neighbourhood Warden to help tackle knife crime and anti-social behaviour in the borough. A new Empty Homes Officer post will be created to support the work done by the existing officer who, in the last year, has brought over 80 empty properties back into use. A new Town Centre and Markets Manager post will be created to help lead and coordinate work on Arnold Market and Carlton Square regeneration and investment projects in the town centres. 50 new bins will also be installed across the borough’s towns and villages to help reduce street littering. Improvements are also planned at Redhill Leisure Centre with a £70,000 investment in new gym equipment. Free two hour car parking at all council owned car parks will also continue and there will be a substantial car park extension provided at the popular Gedling Country Park.

Sensational Bill’s by Francine Leary
F
ormerly a bank, this Georgian building is a beauty. With high ceilings and a striking mezzanine, Bill's Nottingham restaurant is a mix of larger seating areas and cosy booths, with further seating outside for sunny days.
‘til 5pm) two courses for £11.95 or three courses for £14.95, or the Dinner (Sunday to Thursday from 5pm ‘til close) two courses for £16.50 or three for £19.50 incorporating most of what we ate. We'll be back!!!!
It has a quirky interior, almost industrial, with exposed brick and pipework yet cosy, a very relaxed and informal restaurant, the music and lighting were tasteful and not intrusive. This atmosphere genuinely put us all in a lovely mood ready for our meal.
At Bill's their menu caters for every occasion and dietary requirement. If you are vegan, vegetarian or avoiding gluten, they have you covered. They've also introduced new Dinner Specials so there is something new to try every day of the week.
So to our starters, wonderful crispy calamari with red chilli and lime aioli, cooked to perfection and chicken and seasame dumplings with Bill's spicy chutney. Very very tasty, enjoyed by both adults and our children alike.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and Bills is up there as a family favourite!
Our beautifully presented main courses of Pan fried chicken with wild mushroom and a creamy mushroom sauce, Bills Fish Pie and then children's sausage and mash and a burger and chips were all delicious and fresh. Simply lovely! To finish, although full to the brim, we managed to share a Bill's chocolate and hazelnut praline sphere which was devine. Scrumptious brownies and ice cream for the kids. (The kids menu is £6.95 for 3 courses including a drink.) Bill's have great value set menus, either Lunchtime (Mon to Fri 12pm
Convenient for both the Theatre Royal Concert Hall and the Nottingham Playhouse, Bill's Nottingham restaurant is perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between.

Turkey... Not Just For Christmas! I
n Britain we have been eating turkey at Christmas since the 16th Century. In fact Henry VIII was supposed to have been the first person in this country to have turkey for his Christmas dinner. Like about 80% of the population we have turkey once a year, on Christmas day. However, having a fitness fanatic in the family has changed all that. Whether you are looking to cut down on red meat or just want a change, mince turkey breast might be worth considering. It is high in protein
and low in fat making it a really healthy alternative to mince beef. It was not something I would ever have even contemplated buying until recently. Now I buy it once a week and experiment with various recipes. It can be a bit of a bland meat so works well with spices and strong flavours. Here are a few tried and tested recipes that have been cooked by my 18 year old son – so I can guarantee they are foolproof and also delicious!
Ali Wale
Thai Turkey Burgers
Turkey Chilli
Turkey Enchiladas
500g turkey mince 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1-3 tbsp Thai red curry paste (depends on the brand, we use a very hot one) 4 spring onions - chopped 1 egg - beaten Salt & pepper Oil for frying
1 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 x onion 1 x red pepper 2 x garlic cloves 2 x sticks celery 1 x chilli (inc. seeds for extra heat) 500g turkey mince 1 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp turmeric 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained & rinsed 2 x squares dark chocolate (optional) Salt & black pepper
Turkey chilli (see left) 4 x large tortilla wraps Enchilada sauce (see below) Grated cheese
(makes 4 generous burgers)
Either place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix together with your hands or put them all in a food processor and pulse a few times to combine. Divide the mixture into four evenly sized burgers and shape. Put on a plate and chill for at least 30 mins. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry gently until brown on the outside and cooked through. Serve with coleslaw and a green salad - or in a wholemeal burger bun. EASY COLESLAW Thinly sliced white cabbage, grated carrot, finely chopped onion and sliced celery mixed with a sauce made of salad cream and mayo.
(serves 4)
Put the onion, red pepper, garlic, celery and chilli in a food processor and whiz until finely chopped. Or chop all finely by hand. Heat the oil in a large pan and add the chopped vegetables. Fry on a medium heat until soft (about 15 mins). Add the spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric & chilli powder if using) and cook for a minute then add the turkey mince and fry, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula until the meat is cooked (about 10 mins). Add the tinned tomatoes and half a tin of water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 mins, stirring every few mins. Add the kidney beans and 2 x squares of dark chocolate (if using). Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes. Serve with rice, jacket potato or use for the filling for enchiladas.
(serves 4)
ENCHILADA SAUCE 1 tbsp olive oil 1 x onion, finely chopped 1 x garlic clove, finely chopped 500g passata (or 400g tin chopped tomatoes) ½ tsp dry oregano Tabasco sauce - dash Squeeze of runny honey Salt & black pepper First make the sauce - Heat the oil in a small saucepan. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Fry on a medium heat until soft (about 15 mins). Add the oregano and passata. Bring to boil, then simmer for at least 30 mins until reduced to a nice thick sauce. Add honey and seasoning to taste. Add Tabasco for a spicy sauce. If it looks too thick add some water. Heat oven 200°C. Grease a small square oven proof dish or roasting tin. Put a small amount of sauce on the bottom of the tin. To make the enchiladas – grab a wrap – put some chilli and grated cheese in, roll up and lay in the tin. Cover the top with more sauce and grated cheese and bake in oven for 30 mins or until golden. Serve with salad, Mexican rice & sour cream.
still no response. Slightly unnerved I called one of my housemates and between us we couldn’t get it to function. We just sat there, wordless. Gutted. Bizarrely I hung onto both the machine and the games for a year or so, possibly in the hope of some Lazarus style miracle. Barring the brief return to Playstation, I now own an Xbox 360. It does me fine for my gaming needs and, truth be told, I own more games than I’ll end up playing (and certainly more than I’ll end up completing). My son and I engage in regular games of Fifa, Lego Star Wars or Harry Potter, and he’s even taught me how to play Minecraft.
I
used to be alright at playing computer games, I spent many hours of my youth (probably too many) playing various games on various systems. Yet now, my mojo has left me. I think this might be the first stage of admitting that I’m getting old. How do I know this? My son reminds me every time we play. It only takes a game or two for me to realise how far I’ve fallen. Now my son takes me apart on a regular basis. Like a professional footballer whose best days are gone, it’s a chastening experience to see the youth overtake you. My love of games started when my family got a ZX81 (ask your dad kids), and on the occasions that the computer didn’t overheat we got to play and a passion was born. My best friend had a Spectrum and I graduated to a Commodore 64. Those glory days were characterised by having to play 2 player games each using different halves of the keyboard, constant arguments about which was the best joystick on the market, spending our pocket money on tapes (yes, tapes), and engaging in all sorts of despicable cheating to ensure we always got one over on each other. Then consoles hit and I variously owned a Megadrive, Playstation, and a Dreamcast (probably my favourite ever console). And I still remember the day my Dreamcast died with perfect clarity. I went to play a game of Jet Set Radio after work. I pressed the “on” button and nothing happened. I pressed it again,
Now though, the pressure’s on. He wants to play Fortnite and I know he’ll be well ahead of me. He already plays with his mates and now they’re telling me to update to a new console. There’s nothing as embarrassing as being told by a bunch of kids to up your game! And here’s the kicker, I think that these days I’d rather put on a game where I don’t have to think too hard. It’s easier for me to play a familiar game than work out something completely new. There’s nothing that worries me more about computer games than having to learn a new set of controls, or spend all that time getting into the story. I still love playing computer games, it’s a great pastime, but I’m certainly not the best player in the world. I’m not even the best in my house! And games are everywhere these days, on computers, consoles, tablets and phones. There’s never been a better time to play them, and I look forward to both my children realising that dad isn’t actually that good at them, no doubt they’ll end up teaching me (assuming they don’t think I’m completely rubbish).
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

The Lost City Adventure Golf has been shaking things up in its jungle themed Tiki Bar by adding shakes and light bites to the menu for adventurers to enjoy before or after they take to one of the themed 18-hole courses. Adding to the fun on offer at the venue, the selection of mouthwatering milkshakes sees three traditional flavours being given a tasty twist: Banoffee pairs fresh banana with sweet caramel syrup and toffee sauce while Strawberry Shortcake adds shortbread pieces to a blend of fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream, milk and strawberry sauce. The Rainbow Chocolate option comes topped with bright, crunchy smarties and plenty of chocolate sauce. The perfect way to reward an adventure through the jungle, adults can even opt to add a shot of something alcoholic! Adventuring can be hungry work, so if you're feeling peckish try one of the new light bites, available throughout the day. Explorers of all ages will love the bitesize dough balls with a choice of dip while The Lost City platters have something for everyone with a selection of naan, pitta and flatbreads, various dips, and olives and marinated Mediterranean veggies. el: ptain Mar v a C : s w ie v Bur tonRe Tried) War riher (I Representation is finally being, well, represented in the superhero genre. Wanting to add her name to the list is a part alien badass fighter pilot with explosive powers and, sometimes, a killer Mohawk. And that badass is of course: Captain Marvel. When a part amnesiac space-warrior-HERO (she’s really particular about the hero part), lands in a Blockbuster (and instantly you know what era this movie is set in) she only has one thing on her mind. And that one thing is the mission. The mission is to stop a race of shapeshifting aliens from infiltrating the Earth’s people and taking over as their maniacal leaders. But being marooned on a foreign world she, Captain Marvel (Brie Larsen), is going to need some assistance. Who else better to help out than a man that always has his eye on everything, both of them this time. That’s right, young Nicholas J. Fury himself (Samuel L. Jackson) is representing both Shield and Earth and helping out the stranded warrior-hero. Anyone else getting strange Die Hard 3 vibes here? No? Just me? Never mind. The best part of Captain Marvel, hands down, is Brie Larsen. Larsen brings her to life with such charm and enthusiasm that you can’t help but fall in love. But it isn’t only Larsen that knocks it out of the park. Returning cast members Jackson (Fury) and Clark Gregg (Coulson) effortlessly slip back into their roles and give their characters yet another stellar outing. Newcomers Jude Law as space-mentor Yon-Rogg and Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull leader Tallos both deliver characters that grow far beyond the clichés their concepts are routed in. What really surprised about Captain Marvel though is how utterly enthralling the story is. There are a few twists and turns through the plot that you’ll probably see coming a mile away, but how the movie executes these is so entertaining that you completely forget you know what’s coming as you 100% buy into what is unravelling on screen. Honestly Captain Marvel is just a great sci fi movie. From visually spectacular futuristic cities to spaceship battles through a canyon and strange warring alien races, they got it all.
You are plunged head first into yet another branch of Marvel’s cosmic universe and yet again everything feels real. Out of this world concepts are well established, the tech is mind-bogglingly good, and everything is designed to perfection. None more so than Captain Marvel’s super suit/the Kree warrior’s uniform. Less spandex, more armour, the get-up looks both practical and so damn cool. That’s without even mentioning its Mohawk creating helmet function and on the fly colour customisation. Where the hell can we buy one please Marvel? No other hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this far has sheer power on the scale that Captain Marvel has. Seeing her unleash her full potential is a spectacle that will leave you smiling. Captain Marvel is an incredibly good time. The action is grand and exciting, the characters loveable and charmingly brought to life by their cast, in a story that is surprisingly enthralling and will have you fully invested every step of the way. The fundraising year long partnership with When You Wish Upon a Star is now well underway throughout the club. Already £2500 has been raised from events held over the last couple of months including a club celebration evening at Arnold Liberal Club where grandkids to grandparents danced to the ageless Beatles music performed by the local band the Fab4 – a great family evening. And on the 3rd April the clubs two Vets sides took on the might of the AC Wollaton Charity team run by Roberto Pietraforte. The game was kicked off by WishBear and the players from the three teams alone contributed an incredible £550 in match fees. Early in March the club’s U9 Pumas team plus family and friends went for a sponsored walk around Lambley Dumbles and raised an amazing £1100. There is plenty in the pipeline such as cake sales, tombolas, sponsored bowling, sponsored coaching sessions and the huge 24 hour football event planned for 22/23 of June. This is grassroots football in the community for the community! For further details visit: www.gedlingsouthbankfc.co.uk/club-contact facebook/gedlingsouthbank twitter.com/GSBgirls

REVISION
PREPARE...PLAN...PRACTICE
As the mum of a year 11, revision is a hot topic in our house at the moment. This is the time of year when many of us are either sitting exams, revising for exams or helping our children with exam preparation. Schools can be brilliant at helping their students with advice, extra lessons, revision aids and mocks, but at the end of the day they can’t sit those exams for us (shame!). Parents and young people all cope differently with the pressure of exams. As a parent the most important thing we can do is be there – whether that means working through flash cards or offering a cuppa.

PREPARE
PLAN
PRACTICE
My son’s bedroom is a place of mystery and intrigue. Things go in and are never seen again. There are piles of leaflets, flash cards, revision booklets and random school work along with empty crisp packets, sweet wrappers and clothes that were ironed three weeks ago but have still not found their way to the wardrobe...
With exams looming, a bit of forward planning can really help ease any panic. Work back from the exam timetable and factor in out of school activities, then set realistic (you know your child) slots for revision. Agree them and stick to them. It’s easier said than done, I know, but it’s a start.
Sadly, there is no short cut to learning. It’s all about getting as much practice as possible in whatever way suits you. There are loads of great apps and websites to help with revision. For today’s young people who are IT and smart phone savvy this can be really helpful. We have used apps for long car journeys and they have been really effective.
My first piece of advice is to get sorted (unless you are lucky enough to have an organised young person). Preparation is key to good revision. We got some A4 file boxes, labelled up with subjects and then sorted all the odds and sods into the right box. Clear A5 zip bags from Amazon were brilliant for all the different flash cards. Even if he doesn’t do a scrap of revision – at least it’s all well organised and tidy!!
Short bursts are more effective then slogging away for hours. Everyone revises differently and each young person needs to do what feels right for them. I used to do hundreds of mock papers over and over. Some people prefer reading and repeating. There are hundreds of websites to help with techniques. My son favours the “I’ll do some later” school of revision. Extra lessons before, after and at lunchtime are brilliant for reluctant revisers – the school environment has no distractions and teachers are on hand to help.
BBC Bitesize, Seneca, Maths Watch and Quizlet are just a few great websites that spring to mind. They cover most subjects and exam boards. Revision books can also be a great resource. Written in a very student friendly way they often include model exam answers and practice questions. However, a word of warning, make sure you get the correct exam board and don’t waste your money if your child isn’t prepared to use them. I wasted a lot of money going down this route. Good luck to everyone and remember, give it your best shot then relax and enjoy a well earned summer break.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Here is the second half of the interview with Nottinghamshire Police PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) Paula Hipkiss into the valuable role she has held for several years. Q: What’s the best part of your role? A: I am a great believer in making a difference, no matter how big or small, in my community. I like the fact that people know me by name and feel reassured to see me around. I consider myself to be approachable and to the best of my ability assist in helping people change their life for the better. I work on a great team, we all bring together our own experiences from life no matter how young or old we are. Team working is essential in any job and a big part of this role. Q: What’s moment?
your
proudest
A: I have two. It is genuinely helping people to get their life back on the right track. A lady I dealt with had turned to alcohol to deal with everyday life, causing issues not only for herself but her young children. Advice and encouragement was given and support throughout her time asking for help. One year down the line she is a confident lady who has not drunk for 11 months, cares well for her children and now supports other families in similar circumstances.
I have also been heavily involved in providing a service to a volunteer bureau which provides a personal crime prevention course to residents in the area whose first language isn’t English. I have provided course notes, had meetings with the course tutors and attended a final question and answer session. This course has been running for a couple of years and I have been working with them since its launch. Q: What would you say to anyone looking to follow in your footsteps? A: My advice to anyone thinking of joining Nottinghamshire Police is … GO FOR IT. Our role has evolved so much since it first started. You need to be flexible, level-headed and able to communicate on all levels. Your patience will be tested at times. The role does include working shifts so be prepared for this. Come and help us make a difference I look forward to working alongside you in the future.
