Carry on Karting! WIN one of 5 x £80 activity vouchers* Langar Karting and Quad Centre is one of the largest activity centres in the country, offering a huge range of activities for all age ranges. I took four boys for a day of karting and quad biking; what a fantastic experience! We received a really warm welcome from Chris, the manager. The centre is well organised and very professional. You really feel you are in safe hands. The massive indoor karting circuit is great. After a safety briefing, we were let lose in the 270cc/50mph karts. There is a 150 foot long flyover bridge as well as a tricky hair-pin corner. You also get feedback after your go, giving you all the crucial stats so you can see who went the fastest. The boys absolutely loved it. “awesome”, “mint” and “really good fun” were their words. We then moved outside to the quad bikes. These were also a really good buzz and the boys were in their element. As well as quads the centre also has 400cc off road buggies, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting and paintballing, all ideal for team building and corporate events or stag and hen parties. There were a couple of parties going on while we were there and they looked like they were having a whale of a time. Chris, the manager said; “individuals and small groups are also very welcome. Our junior quad biking

parties are particularly popular.” (Prebooking is advised.) With Christmas approaching Langar Karting and Quad Centre is the ideal choice for Christmas parties or why not treat somebody to an Activity Gift Voucher? The centre is only 15 minutes drive from Nottingham City Centre. It took us about 30 minutes from Arnold but it is a lovely drive and well worth it. We are already planning another trip. © Gary Monks

Why do we eat Turkey at Christmas? Over recent years one might think we have become a little tired of the traditional turkey, with lots of celebrity chefs offering a range of alternatives - going back to the traditional Dickensian goose, or a stunning beef rib roast, duck, fish or more exotic combinations from cuisines around the world. But for most of us, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey, around 76% of us have it as the centrepiece of our festive meal. It wasn’t always the case of course, turkeys were first brought to Britain around 1526 but it remained a rare luxury. Instead, people ate goose but also roast swan, pheasant, peacock and even roast boar’s head decorated with holly and fruit. Rumour has it that Henry VIII was the first English king to eat turkey, although Edward

VII is said to have made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Indeed, turkey was pretty much a luxury right up until the 1950s when they became more widely available and refrigerators became commonplace, and now 10 million of them are eaten in the UK every year. Apparently, and this won’t come as much of a surprise to most of us… it is women who are mostly responsible for preparing the Christmas lunch with 67% of British women being in charge of the feast every year, although most of us don’t go for our first “solo” attempt until we are at least 34! Whatever you are eating for your Christmas lunch, or enjoying over the seasonal holidays, make the most of it, and soon the nights will be getting lighter again.

Salmon with Clementines, Vodka and Honey, with a Horseradish Crème Fraiche. Ingredients For the Fish... zest & juice 4 clementines & 1 orange, 2 further clementines sliced 100ml vodka 5 tbsp clear honey 1tsp caster sugar 1kg side of salmon, bones removed (oil the skin side before dressing) For the Crème Fraiche... 200g crème fraîche 2 tbsp creamed horseradish small pack chives, snipped salt and pepper to taste

To make the crème fraîche, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, season with black pepper and a little salt (hold back a few chives to sprinkle on the top) When the salmon is ready, reheat the remaining glaze (add a splash of water if too thick) and brush it over the top .

Salt Rubbed Turkey with Clementine and Bay Butter (would serve approx 8) If, like most of us, you prefer a traditional turkey for lunch on the big day, why not keep the clementine theme and try this twist on the classic Christmas Day roast?

Method

Ingredients 11-12lb oven-ready turkey with giblets removed For the Salt Mix... 5 bay leaves, crumbled if dry, torn if fresh 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaf 1tsp black peppercorns 85g/ 3oz coarse sea salt zest of 1 orange

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a baking tray with oiled baking parchment and place the (oiled) salmon skin side down in the middle. Slice the salmon into 8 fillets, cutting through the flesh but not the skin. Brush the salmon with the glaze, making sure you get in between the gaps. Save some for brushing on at the end. Lay the clementine slices down the centre of the fish, and bake for 20 mins.

For the Clementine and Bay Butter... 100g/ 4oz butter softened zest and juice 1 clementine splash of sherry large thyme sprig, leaves picked 2 bay leaves (fresh or dried)

Bring the clementine zest and juice, vodka and honey to a gentle bubble in a pan, season a little. Simmer for approx 10 mins until reduced, add clementine slices and simmer for a further 5 mins until soft and sticky. Remove fruit slices and set aside. Bubble the liquid until thickened and glossy.

Method Up to 24 hrs before, salt the turkey. Grind all the ingredients to make a wet salt. Sit the turkey in its roasting tin, gently rub a little vegetable oil over the bird and generously rub the salt all over. Cover with cling film and return to the fridge. To make the clementine & bay butter, mash all the ingredients together in a bowl with some seasoning and set aside. (Can be made up to 2 days ahead or frozen for up to a month) Remove the turkey from the fridge 1 hr before you want to cook it. Wipe the excess salt rub off the bird with kitchen roll and pat it dry. When you are ready to cook the bird, gently push your fingers under the breast skin from the neck cavity and loosen it from the meat, taking care not to break the skin. Rub some of the butter on the flesh under the skin and then bring the skin back over. Take the rest of the butter and rub it all over the outside of the Turkey. Cover loosely with foil and cook according to calculated cooking time. Brussels Sprouts on the Side

Do you love them or hate them? Apparently, it’s all down to your genes. Some people can taste a bitter chemical in this traditional veg and some can’t. If you want to serve them to a mixed group, how about combining sultanas, toasted pine nuts, caramelised onions, sherry and a drizzle of honey for something a bit exotic, or perhaps try shredding them and stir-frying with garlic and smoked streaky bacon (just don’t burn the garlic!)

MASALA j u n c t i o n

AN ABSOLUTE GEM THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK! After a three year break from the restaurant trade, Naj Aziz is back with a bang. Using his 25 years of multi award winning restaurant experience (The Indian and MemSaab), he has launched Masala Junction. Situated in the old Natwest bank on the junction between Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road in Carrington/Mapperley Park, the restaurant offers authentic Indian dishes in a building with both history and character. A year in the making, Naj bought the bank back in March 2015, and with the help of architect and sister in law Lyn NiblockAziz, he has transformed the building into the stunning restaurant it is today. Truly a family affair, Mr Aziz’s brother is a partner in the venture, his niece designed all the graphics, his cousin is the manager and his nephew works front of house. The love and passion the family have for the restaurant filters down into everything they do. I took my own brood, including children aged 5, 7 and 16, there for my birthday. The little ones don’t like food that is too spicy (korma kids) and my eldest is a vegetarian that doesn’t really eat vegetables so I was slightly worried! Well, I needn’t have been. Isram (Naj’s brother in law) who looked after us, was amazing. He suggested korma for the children, even though it wasn’t on the menu and poppadoms and chutneys appeared pretty quickly to keep the hungry children busy. To start we had the paneer and broccoli tikka (£6.50) and the sigri kebab selection (for 2) that included chicken tikka, lamb

chops and rehmi kebab (£12.50). It was exquisitely presented with vibrant pickles, purees and a range of garnishes. The chicken tikka went down a treat with my daughter (7) and the paneer was loved by my 16 year old too, a very successful start to our meal. For mains we had the junction jalfrezi (£11.95), lamb rogan josht (£12.95), vegetable biryani (£13.50) and of course the chicken korma, served with pulao rice (£3.50) and a selection of nan breads (£2.50 - £2.95). All the food was delicious and cooked to perfection. The keema nan, always a good indicator, was packed with really tasty meat. Stuffed to the max we still managed to order a few puddings. The chocolate fondant was divine and the coconut icecream, served in a half coconut with all the trimmings was devoured by my 5 year old. All in all a fantastic evening. If you are looking for that wow factor then look no further than Masala Junction. It has it all. © Cat Hedges

A Burton Joyce Kitchin in Hollywood by Bob Massey

In 1901 Hubert Kitchin was a Worsted Wool manufacturer living at Lee Road, Burton Joyce with his wife Katharina and their six year old son Herbert Milner Kitchin along with three servants. In the September that year they had another son who they called Cyril Denzil Milner Kitchin. The young Cyril grew up in Burton Joyce but was too young to serve in World War One. After the first war, Cyril now an 18 year old student, along with his brother Herbert, now a Civil Engineer, decided to try their luck in America. They arrived in California in May 1920. This was just in time to be recorded on the census of that year as being resident on Gorham Ave, Los Angeles. Cyril, now calling himself Jack, entered the early silent film industry as an extra, wearing a long black beard. He was 6’ 2” with light skin, blue eyes and light brown hair. He remained in the film industry for the rest of his life but his height stopped him being taken on as an actor. Jack then moved into technical film production becoming an expert film editor. By 1928 he was the editor on major films and by 1937 he had a total of 36 films to his credit. His early films included Captain Careless (1928), The Perfect Alibi (1930), The Roadside Murder (1932), Little Women (1933) and The Show Goes On (1937). In 1931 Jack met and married a local girl called Dorothy. They had a daughter, Diane, in 1932 who later chose to become an American citizen. In 1934 the whole family returned to England where Jack worked at Ealing studios. Here he became a producer and director during the years leading up to World War Two. In 1937 he headed up a special unit at Ealing that made George Formby films. Formby was the highest paid British film star at the time earning £3.4m a year from his films alone.

At the start of the war, in 1939, Kitchin joined the army and was posted to the Royal Artillery as a private but was soon promoted to acting bombardier. The army loaned him out to Ealing Studios so he could continue with the Formby films, as they were considered essential for the war effort. George Formby left Ealing Studios in 1941 and moved to Columbia Pictures. During the period when Formby was at Ealing Kitchin produced four films. Keep Fit (1937), It’s In The Air (1938), Trouble Brewing (1939) and Come on George! (1939) all staring George Formby.

Kitchin was then seconded to the War Office. Here he was promoted to Second Lieutenant to work with the Army Film Unit making propaganda and information films for the war effort. By the end of the war he had become Assistant Director of the Army Kinematography unit with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Kitchin was awarded the military MBE in the 1945 Birthday Honours list for his work during the war. Returning to Ealing studios after the war, Kitchin produced one more film, Mine Own Executioner in 1947 starring Burgess Meredith. In 1955 he and his wife moved to Canada settling in Vancouver at Hudson Street where he died on 5th December 1983 at the age of 82.

A New Lease of Life at CORE

by Beryl Webster In March 2015, my husband died in the Nottingham City Hospital. I was devastated; we had been happily married for 62 years and I wondered how I could cope on my own after all that time. My son, David, came every day for a week to help sort out everything but he had to go back to work, and I felt absolutely useless. The worst thing about being left on your own is the loneliness and it wasn’t getting any easier. Many friends called and I have very good neighbours who came and stayed for a while and I had flowers, letters and cards but nothing can ease the pain or stop the tears when you lose someone you love. It was also the first time in my life I had lived on my own. In May, a friend of ours, Michael, who was the chairman of the trustees of The CORE Centre, called to see how I was and I said “if I don’t get out of here soon, I’ll end up in the madhouse”. He told me “on Monday morning, go to The CORE Centre in St Wilfrid’s Square and ask for Terri. She will interview you to be a volunteer worker at the Centre and explain what we do.” On the Monday I went and Terri and I had a long talk. I said I would ‘have a go’ and, as on that day only Terri and Sue were in the office, I was asked if I would like to stay and help. I said I would but, oh dear, I hadn’t brought my glasses and my hearing aid battery had run out! Anyway I coped, with help, when anyone came in. My days to work are Mondays and Wednesdays 9.00 till 1.00, but I have been doing more time with staff being on holiday and one lady who has been ill since Christmas, but for me it’s better than feeling lonely on my own. Over time I have learnt of all the courses that are available at CORE and there is something to suit everyone.

and faxing. Citizens Advice Bureau, counselling therapy, family solicitor, Job Club are all there to help everyone. For the more mature persons we also have chair aerobics and chair yoga which are well attended, along with educational and leisure courses. Our brochure is worth having a look at ... the list is endless!

This year, with help from my colleagues, I organised a tabletop sale to raise funds for CORE and also a social evening with a singsong, food and drink. Groups of us have enjoyed being out to lunch together and also had fun at Epperstone Village Hall’s Quiz and Pudding Night. Two months ago I was voted onto the committee. So everything is happening and I don’t feel quite so lonely because of the friends I’ve made. You could do the same. Coming through that door gave me my life back ... I did it and I have no regrets.

We help people to fill in forms and provide all kinds of office services, including photocopying

a helping hand Council to offer ‘life changing’ grants of up to 30k for disabled needing help in their homes Gedling Borough Council has received funding from the Government to provide grants for residents which can cover the costs of property adaptations.

UNSECURED LOANS

Tel: 07375598805 9am - 9pm 7 days

Rough example - borrow £1000 over 24 months = £45.68 per month Total payback @ 9% APR = £1096.43 Actual APR cost to you will depend on your credit rating

The grants will help those with disabilities to remain living independently at home and give financial support to make this possible. Grant money could go towards ramps, widening doors, adapting or providing suitable washing/bathing or toilet facilities, installing a stair lift or a ‘through the floor’ lift.

£127 £197

The grants are means tested - applicants need to be referred to Gedling Borough Council from an Occupational Therapist who will assess the individual’s needs, then the council decides if they qualify. The maximum grant available is £30,000 and residents living in rented properties would require the owner’s permission for any works to be carried out. John Byrne, a resident who had bathroom adaptations and a stair lift fitted through the funding said; “The Occupational Therapist was brilliant and the process only took three months from start to finish. I couldn’t fault the process, it has changed my life and I’d recommend anyone else with a disability to see if they’d qualify.” Residents who feel they would qualify for a grant should contact Nottinghamshire County Council’s Occupational Therapists on 0300 500 80 80 for a referral.

Don’t settle for a diet plan, upgrade your health instead With the rise of food trends such as “eating clean” and “lean in 15”, nutrition is fast becoming a hot topic. We asked Nottingham based nutritionist, Eva Humphries, to give us the low down on what you can expect from a nutritional therapy consultation.

Don’t expect a diet plan

comprehensive assessment of your relative requirements are made so the advice given is completely unique to you. Your digestive health, energy levels, hormones and eating habits are all considered alongside any symptoms you may be presenting with. This may sound like a lot of data but in reality you just get to spend an hour talking about yourself.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

Evidence based science

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

What can nutritional therapy help with?

It’s personal There is another huge issue with diet plans: they don’t take into account individual requirements. During a nutritional therapy consultation, a

Qualified nutritional therapists will look for the clinical research to support your health goals. This nerdy data, is the real scientific evidence that underpins each recommendation made. So, if we tell you to eat two more portions of green veg a day, be sure to know there is a research paper to back up that recommendation.

Nutritional therapy is about upgrading your overall health. Energy, digestive and skin health, as well as cognitive function may all be improved with the help of a qualified nutritional therapist.

Eva Humphries is a Nottingham based nutritionist, founder of Wholefood Warrior and appreciator of good food. Eva holds health and wellbeing talks on topics including the basics of nutrition, improving energy and detoxing. Visit www.wholefoodwarrior.co.uk for more information.

Gedling walkers to receive special recognition for making people more active A team of volunteer walkers are to be recognised by the national body for walkers for making people more active.

The Get Going Gedling voluntary walk leaders are to receive an award for special contributions to walking from Walking for Health, England’s largest network of health walks. The team of specially trained walkers are being recognised for their commitment to

the weekly walks they organise around the borough to help people stay active. The group were nominated for the award by Gedling Borough Council who alongside Nottinghamshire North & East CCG provide support for the walks. The walks are short and over easy terrain, and are open to everyone but are especially aimed at those who are least active. The walks take place in Carlton, Arnold, Killisick and most recently at Gedling Country Park. Anyone can attend the free walks and they normally last for one hour. Walking can reduce blood pressure, prevent type II diabetes and relieve stress amongst other health benefits.

Beware of Online Fraud... With Christmas just around the corner, it’s important to consider the growing problem of online fraud which happens often at this time of year. You need to know how to stay safe whilst online to avoid the fraudsters, who could potentially ruin your Christmas. Online Shopping: For most people with busy schedules around this time of year, the common solution is to opt for online shopping, however, with this, comes risk. For example, items may not always appear as advertised, or, worse still, not show up at all. Try to stick to well-known retailers and always check if the item you’re buying can be returned.

Money transfers: When using apps like eBay and Depop, it is important to be aware of scammers. More often than not, a seller will want you to transfer the money using a safe payment page such as ‘’Paypal’’ or ‘’Depop wallet’’ so, if needs be, a refund can be issued. Alarm bells should start to ring if the seller wants to use a different method. Make sure you always check existing feedback given to the seller, as this can be a very good indicator of how reliable they are. If you are unfortunate enough to fall victim to online fraud over the Christmas period, don’t hesitate to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 040 or at www. actionfraud.police.uk

Children with new gadgets: They’ve been begging you all year and you finally surprise your child with a new laptop, but be aware of the dangers and get your child clued up on being cyber safe. Make sure you get good anti-virus software, but also check out the www.getsafeonline.org website, which has excellent free advice, as does the Child Exploitation Online Protection Agency’s www.thinkyouknow. co.uk site Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable?
