Why should I consider setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney? Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney. People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older. This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities. Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you
will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances. Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney. Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process. Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

Ella’s Teen Talk:
Handling Money
We all know there’s nothing worse than making plans with friends and being forced to cancel them because our pockets are empty. I’m personally fed up of hearing my parents tell me that “money doesn’t Ella Higginbotham aged 15 grow on trees” (what a silly saying, it’s a bit obvious isn’t it!) when the majority of us under 16s can’t get jobs, but we really don’t want to miss out on a social life: we can’t win! When our purses are sparse there are just a few little things we can do to make sure we aren’t completely broke: 1) Get a Terramundi money pot- its saves money and looks pretty, genius! It’s different because what you put in you can’t get out until it’s full up and ready to be smashed. So you know that random change lying in your jean pocket or in the bottom of your bag? just chuck it into the terramundi and before you know it it’s time to smash it and you have a whole load of cash. Plus you get the added bonus of getting the hammer and whacking it open; it’s a lot of fun or can act as an excellent stress release which is perfect for all our teenage traumas! 2) Don’t buy food and drink-starve! No but seriously if you’re going for a day out in town or in the park don’t waste money on buying food, just take it with you. Wrap up a sandwich at home because it’s just as yummy and completely free! 3) Do little jobs- you’ve got to break the teen catchphrase of “can’t be bothered” (however heart-breaking it may be) and don’t be lazy, it only takes ten minutes to wash some pots or iron a few pairs of jeans. Ask your parents for just 50p every now and then by helping around the house and it will all add up. Oh and don’t forget the puppy dog eyes if you’re really desperate. 4) Compare where you shop- don’t buy the first thing you see. You can probably get the same thing elsewhere for a much better price. Be patient and window shop for a bit until you find the ideal, cheap purchase. 5) Babysit- it’s a doddle (Hopefully!) You get paid to spend your evening watching TV whilst the kids are in bed, plus everyone tells you to help yourself so that means free food! You can’t go wrong! You or your parents must know families with young kids so ask around and do a good job of it; that way word gets around and you will eventually have loads of Next business. It’s the little things that you can do to make sure you’ve always got some money spare to do the things that you want to do. Keep it sensible and realistic and you should never be searching for scraps of money around your bedroom again because, trust me, that’s a lost battle.

Are you thriving... or surviving..?
Poor Self Esteem.. Lacking Self Belief.. Worn-out with Problems…….
Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive as easily. Sweet treatS
Banoffi Pie
Kieran’s Key Lime Pie
300g ginger biscuits 70g butter 397g tin condensed milk or caramel 3 bananas 300ml whipping cream chocolate for decoration 20cm spring based cake tin Method
This recipe is adapted from a BBC Food recipe. 375g gluten free digestive biscuiits 150g butter 8 large limes (zest & juice) 1 pint double cream 397g tin condensed milk to decorate (optional) 85g creme fraiche If using condensed milk - place tin in a 1 tsp lime zest large pan of boiling water - making sure the tin is completely covered. Boil the tin for 2 to 3 hours. Keep checking and topping up with boiling water. This is very important. If the tin isn’t covered it could explode! If this is too much for you just use a tin of caramel. Grease the tin. I line with greaseproof paper to make it easier to get the pudding out. Crush the ginger biscuits (I use a food processor) to fine crumbs. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add the biscuit crumbs and mix well. Line the bottom of the tin with the mixture and press up the sides. Use a flat bottomed jar to press the mixture firmly then place in fridge to set for a couple of hours. Slice the bananas and place on the biscuit base. Pour over the caramel (if using boiled condensed milk be very careful when opening the tin). Whip the cream and when cool cover the top with cream. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
Method
Crush the biscuits either in a food processor or in a bag with a rolling pin. Melt the butter in a pan and stir in the crushed biscuits. The mixture can be split between 2 x 18cm tins or 1 x 23cm tin. Press mixture into tins & chill in the fridge. Put lime juice, condensed milk & cream in a bowl and whisk for 1-2 mins. Add lime zest to mixture (save a tsp for decoration) and stir in. Pour mixture onto biscuit bases and chill for 2 hours or overnight. Decorate with crème fraiche and lime zest
Strawberry Tart
This recipe is adapted from one by Jocelyn Dimbleby in a Sainsbury’s cook book called Sweet Dreams.
175g plain flour 60g caster sugar 100g butter 300ml creme fraiche 350g strawberries 3 tbsp strawberry jam finely grated rind & juice of 1 orange (3 tbsp) Method
Sift flour & sugar into a bowl. Melt butter in a pan along with the orange rind and 2tbsp juice. Once melted add to bowl and mix well until a smooth dough is formed. Press mixture into a 24cm flan tin. Using hands press over the bottom & up the sides then chill in fridge for 30 mins. Heat over to 200°C. Bake pastry blind for 20 mins until edges are pale golden colour. Take out oven and pour in creme fraiche then return to oven for 10 mins. Once tart is cold decorate with strawbs. Gently heat the strawberry jam with a tbsp of orange juice and spoon over the top to glaze. Chill until ready to serve.
Great
times are back at the Robin Hood Inn, Lambley. Vicky and Geoff took over this traditional village pub in April this year and already the pub is buzzing and the locals are over the moon. We decided to go for an early evening meal on Saturday. The Robin Hood is owned by Marstons and Gary was impressed with the real ale. His benchmark of a good boozer is a decent pint, and he was not disappointed.
The menu offers traditional pub favourites with most mains under a tenner. There are offers on most nights as well for an even better deal. The 2 for ÂŁ10, Monday to Friday all day offer is a great idea for a lunchtime blow out and free wi-fi is a bonus. Next time we need to schmooze our printers this is where we will come! The Robin Hood really welcomes kids - our two had a great night and scored the food 10! You can't say fairer than that. The kids menu is really flexible so there is something for even the most fussy eaters.
We were all really impressed with the quality, service and prices and it seems we are not alone. Customers are voting with their feet and coming back week after week. One of the most popular nights is Monday steak night with steaks 2 for 1. It's so popular booking is essential. Since our visit I have met a couple who were totally singing the praises of steak night so word is getting out. The Robin Hood Inn has live music on Saturday night twice a month and a karaoke night once a month. It’s quiz night on Thursdays and killer darts on Friday teatime. More events are planned and a website should be live soon. All in all we had a lovely evening. Vicky and Geoff were fantastic hosts, the atmosphere was great and the food was lovely. It was a shame that an early start Sunday prevented us staying for the live band, still there is always next time.....

Love all things chocolate? Then the chances are you’ll adore a special cat rescued by a Nottinghamshire animal charity – who’s now looking for a real home. Smokey, a rather dashing dark chocolate cat, was found straying until a kind passerby alerted Animal Accident Rescue Unit. The ultimate lap cat, he asks permission before relaxing onto any available lap for a long snooze. At around two years old, this affectionate boy enjoys playing, is tidy in his habits and enjoys self-grooming to remain gorgeous! As with all the charity’s animals ready for rehoming, Smokey is neutered, microchipped and litter-trained. Donations to Animal Accident Rescue Unit paid for his flea and worm treatments plus Felv/FIV tests, for which he is clear. All he needs now is a home - could that be with you? To discover more on Smokey call 0115-9671000 (for queries about Smokey only), or email admin@ aaru.org.uk, with your telephone number and postcode for the adoption volunteer to contact you. All homes are checked preadoption, whilst rehoming on busy roads is obviously not possible. Want to help animals like Smokey? His care is possible thanks to the charity’s volunteers – but which very urgently needs more fosterers. For this hugely rewarding role whilst making a massive difference to a vulnerable feline’s life - even for holiday cover – learn more by emailing admin@ aaru.org.uk or calling 0115-9321555, and for other information and animals see www. aaru.org.uk.

Miss Lindley’s School by Bob Massey Anne Lindley was a Christmas baby born in Sutton in Ashfield on the 23rd December 1803 to James and Mary Lindley. Her parents were active members of the local Independent Congregational Church and it was here that she was christened on 9th May the following year. Little is known of her early life but there is some evidence to suggest that in her early 20’s she received a proposal of marriage. After buying her a ring the man in question disappeared without marrying her leaving her in the lurch.
the school was well established with only three vacancies for students at the start of that Christmas term. In 1857 Miss Lindley was on the move again, this time to Bulcote. On Friday 24 July 1857 an advert appeared in the Stamford Mercury announcing that a Miss Lindley was to open a new school for girls at Oakland House in Bulcote. The school opened on Friday 25th January at Oakland House. This time the school had day pupils as well as boarders.
This appeared to have affected Miss Lindley badly as she never married. As a single woman with no husband teaching was one of the few professions open to her. By 1851 Miss Lindley lived in Woodthorpe at Hill Cottage next to the Toll House on the corner of Mansfield Road and Scout Lane (now Woodthorpe Drive) where she is listed as a school mistress running a school for girls. Miss Lindley had two boarders and two young servants; a 16 year old cook and a 12 year old general servant who appear to be sisters. They may also have been students earning their education. The school only existed for two years. In December 1853 Miss Lindley put the cottage up for rent and moved the school to Calverton at Burnah House. This had been the home of the late Thomas Redgate. An advert for the new school published in December 1853 said the establishment would be ready after the Christmas break for 12 resident pupils making it a much bigger institution. An advert dated July 1854 named Miss Lindley as the principle assisted by eminent professors and a resident foreign governess who were not named. By 1856
Friends were assured that Oakland House was in a healthy location and that it was conveniently situated between the railway stations of Burton Joyce and Lowdham on the Nottingham Lincoln line. By the 1861 census Miss Lindley had four resident young ladies ranging in age from 9yrs to 17yrs coming from as far away as London and Norfolk. There was a resident music teacher, Anne Clowe, and two servants who also appear to be sisters, following the same arrangements for their education as before. There are no adverts for the school after this date. Miss Lindley would have been 58 in 1861 and may have decided to retire. No clear records of her death have been found but an Anne Lindley aged 68 died in 1871 in Mansfield. This may have been her.

from Inspector Al Pearson..... I’d like to start this issue’s column with a big thank you. I’ve been so impressed with the level of diligence shown by residents of Burton Joyce over the last few months. Whether it is speaking to the beat team, calling 101 or making reports to Crimestoppers you have notified us often and promptly when you see crime taking place or if something doesn’t feel quite right. As a result we have increased patrols near the children’s park and in Bridle Road, and arrested and charged a man with the theft of garden ornaments. Keep that information coming in to 101 or 0800 555 111. Your calls will be treated in the strictest of confidence. On another note, it only seems like yesterday that I was talking about the onset of lighter nights and making sure you take care with your open windows and sheds. But already we are heading into the autumn and those long summer evenings are becoming shorter and cooler and I’m inclined to remind you of the basics. We’ve had a few issues with ramblers and dog walkers who park their cars near woodland. While they have been enjoying a stroll thieves have been enjoying going through their cars. Always lock the doors, and close windows and sunroofs of your vehicles whenever you leave them unattended. Do not leave anything tempting on display in your car, including power leads and loose
change. You might know there is only smelly gym kit and an empty lunch box in your bag but a criminal doesn’t and so they will try their luck. The last thing you want to deal with on a Sunday afternoon, after a nice couple of hours in the fresh air, is a smashed window leaving you to spend the rest of your weekend on the phone to the police and your insurer. Finally, I’d like to remind those with children to be aware of where they are and what they are doing on an evening. As we approach Halloween and Bonfire Night we often see an increase in mischief. But what may start out as a bit of fun can easily end in damage or injury. Ensure they are being safe and considerate when Trick or Treating. Why not don a white bed sheet or pop in some fangs and go with them. They should stay in a group and keep it friendly. Avoid knocking on doors after 8pm Keep bonfires and fireworks to organised events. If you do plan on lighting up a few Catherine Wheels and rockets in the back garden be careful of where you are aiming them and consider your pets and neighbours. Throwing fireworks at buildings, animals or people will not be tolerated and those caught risk arrest and prosecution. Let’s keep it fun and friendly this year so we can all enjoy the festivities safely.
