A WINTER TRAGEDY by Maureen Newton Two headstones stand at the side of the church path leading from the library to the church porch. The poignant words commemorate a tragic accident to two boys.

In loving memory of William Henry Barnsley who was drowned at Annesley pond January 16th 1886 by an ice accident aged 14 years Almost identical, the other stone is to the memory of William Albert Inman aged 11 years. The recent cold snap reminded me of this tragedy – but what had happened? During the winter of 1886 there was a severe frost when the lake in Annesley Park was frozen over. This large lake 4 to 5 acres in extent was located about a quarter of a mile from Annesley Hall. It was fed from the north west by a spring and water left via a stream which eventually joined the river Leen. In the middle of January a further few days of frost encouraged those who enjoyed skating to guess the ice would bear them safely and several people assembled on the ice. Included among these were several boys from Hucknall. About 4 o’clock four lads, who were more adventurous than the skaters, went towards the point where the water entered the lake. Suddenly the ice gave way and the four were immersed in water at least 6 feet deep. The commotion brought forth a hero called Alfred Booth who lived on Beardall Street in Hucknall. He acted with great courage and rescued two of the boys – one of whom was called Frederick Brown but the other ran off towards Hucknall without leaving his name. Alfred Booth also grasped the fingers of one of the other boys but was unable to hold him and he sank. The tenants of the nearby house with Mr. Young the underbailiff and sergeant Hayes rendered assistance but the weather worsened with snow and rain which froze as it fell. It was two in the morning before Henry Brown and Henry Britton who were using drags recovered the bodies of the boys.

Mr. D. Whittingham, the coroner for the district held the inquest on the bodies the following Monday afternoon at the Fox and Hounds public house on Annesley Road. He said that this occurrence would be added to the long list of accidents resulting from sliding on insecure ice. He regretted that no life saving equipment or appliances were available near the lake and he thought it desirable that instruction should be given to children in school of the dangers of going to far on the ice. Elizabeth Barnsley, wife of Samuel Barnsley of Welbeck Street identified her son. She heard soon after 4pm about the accident and her son’s body was brought home about twenty to four in the morning. She didn’t know he had gone to the pond. Sarah Ann Pickard identified her son by a former husband. She last saw him alive between 1 and 2pm and was informed of his death about 4pm. She had warned him not to go to the pond. Frederick Brown a youth of 11 years lived with his parents on Annesley Road. About half past one he called for Inman and they went to slide on the ice. For a while they amused themselves by swinging on a tree but eventually joined the other boys on the lake. They were near where the water runs into the lake when the ice gave way. As he was going down for the third time he was caught by the wrist by Booth and pulled out. Alfred Booth, a collier, had gone to the pond to skate. Suddenly he heard cries for help. From the edge of the ice he got Brown out and another boy but as he knelt to reach another one the ice gave way and he too was in the water. With great difficulty he got out. He called out to the other skaters to assist him but no one came. The coroner said all credit was due to him for the courageous way he tried to assist the boys. This was also the opinion of the jury. The credit was greater because he could not swim and had risked his own life to save others. No one could have shown more courage. A short newspaper report the following week reported: “A sum of £5 was collected by three men named Dennis, Burton and Brown for the benefit of Alfred Booth, the brave young collier who rescued two boys from drowning”. chorus roundup 5th Singing Course...the best one yet!

Members of the Major Oak Chorus found out what it would be like to sing in a much larger chorus recently when 40 guys joined their latest singing course. Over 6 weeks they learnt three songs, Take Me Home, Country Roads, a Carl Denver classic; Something, George Harrison’s most famous song; and The Lion Sleeps Tonight , always a popular song with audiences.. These featured centrally in the end of course show performed to a capacity audience and received a tremendous reception. What a night! Many of the new guys commented how brilliant the course had been and how well it had been organised. The great news is that 22 of those new guys joined the Chorus the following week for normal rehearsals. Wow! Should you wish to find out more about Nottingham’s only male barbershop chorus then why not visit our website www.majoroakchorus.com or contact the chorus by sending an email to secretary@majoroakchorus. com. We look forward to hearing from you.

They raised £650 for each of two charities; Harrington Junior School and Treetops Hospice. GEM Connection’s 15th Birthday Show is on Saturday 11th May 2013 at Post Mill Centre, South Normanton, DE55 2EJ. It looks like it will be a fantastic show! Book now to avoid disappointment! Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to take time out for yourselves ladies, and either come along to one of GEM’s events or even join the chorus? GEM Connection meets every Thursday from 7:30pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. If you would like to find out more, come along to a rehearsal, sponsor us, become part of the mailing list or book us for an event, please email: pro@ gemconnection.org or contact Flin Tubby on 07545 316 986. Bestwood MVC Maggie’s Cheque Handover Maggie’s Centre, Nottingham were delighted to receive a cheque for £1500 from Bestwood Male Voice Choir in November. Angela Kehoe from Maggies was delighted to receive the cheque which will help the centre to continue to support anyone effected by cancer.

All Change at Grand Central

The Chorus has bad news. The Director, John Grant, has retired after taking it to two medals in two years. The good news is that he handed over the Directorship to Zac Booles (pictured receiving the baton from John) a young rising star in the Barbershop firmament. As a result of becoming the National Champions in May, the Chorus has been invited to represent Britain at the International Barbershop Competition in Toronto next year.

Rehearsals are at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15.pm every Wednesday. If you are a potential singer, sponsor, booker or just curious you are welcome to join them. Website www.grandcentralchorus.com

forcing a lock and grabbing whatever they see.

Firstly, Nottinghamshire Police would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year. No doubt you will have received some lovely gifts and gadgets from your friends and family this Christmas. They might include a new handbag, car radio, top of the range laptop and even some brand new clothes. We want you to keep hold of these presents and not for them to be snatched by a burglar or thief who has seen them left unattended in your car or home. You can help to ensure that 2013 is a happy new year by taking steps to protect your home, vehicles and belongings. Most burglars are opportunists who are always more likely to target a house that looks vulnerable in some way. A darkened property in a row of otherwise illuminated homes will attract attention, but an inexpensive timer switch could pay dividends by deterring a thief. Keeping door and car keys safe and out of sight is also advised. Vehicles with items on display also attract attention from thieves who will not think twice about smashing a window or

You can play your part by ensuring cars and homes are secure and that there is no temptation in sight for thieves. Please also consider registering phones, laptops, electrical items and other gadgets, particularly new items received at Christmas, on property database Immobilise. By doing this it will help officers reunite recovered items with their rightful owner. For more information visit www. immobilise.com. This year we also want to ensure that you are kept up to date with what is happening in your area. One way to find out what’s happening is by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text. It is a great way to be kept in the loop and we encourage everyone to sign up by visiting w w w. n e i g h b o u r h o o d a l e r t . co.uk.

Reader Questionnaire: RESULTS A MASSIVE THANKS to all of you who took the trouble to fill in your questionnaires. We really do appreciate it. Congratulations to Mr Stevenson who wins a £50 Tesco voucher and to Ms Frankland and Mrs Owens who both win £25 vouchers of their choice. We were overwhelmed by the positive and constructive answers to the questions. Here’s what we found out............

98.6% of you read and keep the magazine

Great news for advertisers and contributors (and us!!!)

The main reasons given for keeping the magazines were to find local businesses, local services and to find out what's going on in the area. You also love your puzzles, competitions and offers so we will try to include as many of these as we possibly can. History was also popular and we would like to thank all our wonderful contributors. Wow - this is great news for us and all the businesses in the mags...from oven cleaners to river cruises, gardeners to fitness classes you love them all!! ...Really good , great rates, well satisfied, super... were all comments you used to describe the service you received.

favourite sections lots of you simply said "All of it". For those that did specify, adverts came top, followed by local news and events. Most of the sections got a mention which is great!

Some we have already taken on board; money off vouchers, more competitions, interviews with local traders Some we are working on right now; bringing back top tips page, restaurant offers Others are all noted and will be considered at a later date. Thanks to all of you who have agreed to help us on an ongoing basis with our spot checking. There's the chance to win a tenner every other month for answering a very quick phone call. If you missed the questionnaire but would like to be on our call list there is still time.

Can You Help? The Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is YOUR local Air Ambulance Service and needs your help in many different ways to help keep it operational. Our helicopter and crew are on call every single day of the year during daylight hours. We average 4 missions a day attending everything from road traffic accidents, industrial and sporting accidents, serious illnesses and people who are injured in inaccessible places. Each year it costs the LNAA £1.7million to provide this vital, life-saving service and we receive no Government or Lottery funding. We rely on individuals, companies and community groups to help us reach this target. Some of the ways people can help their Air Ambulance Service are: • Donating money • Fundraising on our behalf • Joining our Lottery • Remembering us in their will • Donating their time as a Volunteer Volunteers are needed in our shops in Mapperley, Retford, Stapleford, Sutton in Ashfield and Mansfield Woodhouse to help serve customers, sort stock and window-dress. At events volunteers are needed to help set up our stand, sell LNAA merchandise and run tombolas and other fundraising initiatives. We need volunteer drivers to drive our vans to events and to deliver stock to our shops and we need volunteers at our warehouse to sort stock and donations and people are needed all over the county to attend cheque presentations on our behalf. Volunteering is very rewarding and you will be helping to save lives, will meet lots of people and there are roles to meet most abilities and talents. To find out more have a chat with the Nottinghamshire Volunteer Coordinator Lynn Jones on 0115 941 2255 or email L.Jones@ ambucopter.org.uk.

Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest – the next chapter: Plans for new £13m visitor attraction announced A £13m investment plan to create a world class Robin Hood experience and protect historic Sherwood Forest will provide a major boost for the local economy, says Nottinghamshire County Council. Around 100 people could be employed through plans for a new Sherwood Forest Visitor attraction which will also generate huge visitor spend for the local economy and vital investment for the Forest itself. The first phase of the project which includes a brand new visitor centre, café and shop to replace the existing facilities will open in summer 2014 and the new Discover Robin Hood attraction will welcome its first visitors in spring 2015. The Discover Robin Hood proposal promises: • A world-class visitor attraction to promote the legend, life and times of Robin Hood and his band of merry men • Interactive, futuristic tourist features amid the settings of a medieval castle complete with fortified ramparts made from local materials • Free access to a courtyard offering a taster of medieval activities and a gateway to Sherwood Forest which retains its free public access • Comprehensive plans to promote the natural habitats and natural history of Sherwood Forest – led by the existing county council ranger team. Celia Brooks, Chairman of Edwinstowe Parish Council said: “We welcome investment plans at Sherwood which promote the area, but at the same time protect the forest and are sympathetic to the local environment, as well as anything which can benefit the village of Edwinstowe.”

MOVE IT, LOSE IT, AND LOVE IT!

with your local Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitnesses Classes in Arnold and Sherwood Do you want to loose weight and shape up for your special day?

Why not read about Suzette’s story: Suzette joined one of the Arnold Rosemary Conley classes in January 2012 in order to loose weight for her wedding. She had tried other diet’s previously without success and loving exercise decided the Rosemary Conley classes would be an ideal way to loose weight and tone up as they combine weight loss with exercise. All classes offer a combination of dietary advice and exercise, which has been central to the life changing successes that many members have seen. Suzette set herself the target to loose weight before her big day, having already bought her dress, she new how much she wanted to loose. Suzette was very successful in her weight loss shedding 21lb, but she was staggered by the huge amount of inch loss particularly on her waist – 14 inches!! Her dress virtually had to be remade in order to fit her on the big day. Suzette dropped from a size 18 to a size 10, she says “I was getting married in August and I felt very overweight and had no confidence at all. Jo and the other members in class were so supportive. My wedding day was amazing and I felt like a princess – thanks to Jo!”

POSITIVE OUTCOMES For many of us alcohol can be an enjoyable part of everyday life. For others it can cause difficulties. If you are trying to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink, or to stop drinking altogether and you’re finding it harder than you had imagined, a support group might be the answer. Positive Outcomes is one of only a handful of independent alcohol support groups in Nottinghamshire run wholly by and for people who aim to control their drinking – cutting down or cutting it out. We are not health professionals, just ordinary people who have stopped drinking or who want to control their drinking. We meet each week in Nottingham city centre to listen, discuss and help each other in a safe, confidential and nonjudgemental environment. We are a drop-in group - there is no charge and you can come to as many or as few meetings as you like. We hope that we can help you but if you find we are not right for you, there is no pressure to come back. So if you think we can help and you would like to find out more, contact us for information on these numbers: Oxford Corner: 0115 948 5505 Mon, Tues & Fri, 9.30am-5pm Wed:9.30am-8pm,Thursday1pm-5pm Self Help Nottingham: 0115 911 1661 Mon to Fri 9am – 1pm E-mail: info@selfhelp.org.uk

All correct answers will be entered into a draw. The winner will be notified by Monday 8 April 2013. The tickets are for the 7.30pm performance on Monday 22 April 2013.

On a cold dark night nothing warms you up like a steaming bowl of soup with some crusty bread. All these recipes are easy to make and taste delicious.

Cauliflower Cheese Soup

Curried Lentil Soup

1tbsp veg oil 1 or 2 tbsp curry powder 1 onion chopped 3 carrots peeled & diced finely 250g lentils 1.2 ltrs veg stock salt & pepper tabasco sauce (optional) Greek yogurt to serve

n

k

S OU P it che Method

This soup is mild, thick and very creamy. 30g butter 1x onion chopped 1x cauliflower cut into florets 250ml milk 600ml veg stock 150g mature cheddar grated salt & pepper 1 tsp paprika

Method

Melt butter in a large saucepan. Cook onions gently until soft. Add the cauliflower and stir. Add stock. Bring to boil and simmer until florets are just tender. This will only take a few minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool for 10 mins. Add grated cheese and milk and stir. Liquidise until smooth. Place back in pan and heat gently. Season to taste. You shouldn't need much salt due to the cheese. Once in bowls sprinkle with paprika. Also delicious with crispy bacon scattered over.

Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion and fry gently for 10 mins, add garlic and fry for another 5 mins til onions are soft. Add curry powder, stir and cook for 1 min. Add carrots and mix well. Cook for 1 min. Add lentils and stock and stir well. Bring to the boil and simmer until lentil and carrot are soft (about 20 mins). Liquidise and place back in pan. Taste and season accordingly. I find no salt needed if I use stock cubes. If you want the soup to have an extra kick add a few drops of Tabasco. To serve add a swirl of Greek yogurt to each bowl.

French Onion Soup

30g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 700g onions thinly sliced 1 ltre beef stock 250ml white wine 2 cloves garlic crushed salt & pepper to taste French stick 200/250g gruyere cheese grated Method

Heat oil and butter in large saucepan and fry onion and garlic gently until browned and soft (about 30 mins). Be careful not to burn the onions. Add the stock and wine and bring to the boil then simmer for 20 mins. Season to taste. Thickly slice the baguette and lightly toast both sides. Sprinkle cheese on top of the slices and grill until the cheese is bubbling. Put soup in bowls and float the baguette slices on top to serve.

A Lifeline for Animals in Need

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).

Volunteer Drivers and Phone Operators Needed!

Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Many other volunteering roles are also available. Animal Accident Rescue Unit lifeline telephone number for dealing with animals in distress is 0115-932 1555.
