TO ALL OUR READERS!!! Another year over...where does the time go?? We hope you all had a fantastic festive season and are looking forward to 2014. We are constantly being told to eat less and move more, especially at this time of year so we decided to ask some young people to share their favourite sports with us all and give us some inspiration. See page 41. These cold, dark nights really do call for comfort food and there is none better than a steaming bowl of (healthy) stew. We have included three easy recipes to cheer you up. STEWPENDOUS!!

Chicken, Leek & Bacon Casserole

Spanish Sausage Stew

170g chorizo - thickly sliced 8 pork sausages - each cut into 3 1 onion - roughly chopped 2 sweet potatoes - peeled & cut into chunks 1 red pepper - chopped 2 cloves garlic - chopped 1 green chilli - chopped 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp ground cumin red wine - small glass 400g tin chopped tomatoes 200ml chicken stock salt & pepper

Method 2 tbsp olive oil 4 chicken breasts each quartered 3 leeks - washed & thickly sliced 2 cloves garlic - finely chopped 155g streaky bacon lardons 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves white wine - small glass 1 tbsp plain flour 500ml chicken stock

Method

Heat oven to 180째C. Heat oil in ovenproof casserole. Cook chicken until golden then remove. Cook lardons for 2 mins, add leeks, garlic & thyme and cook until leeks soften (about 5 mins). Add wine and boil for 2 mins. Add flour, stir well. Add stock gradually, stirring all the time. Add chicken & bring back to boil. Put lid on and place in oven for 45 mins then take lid off and cook for another 20 mins. Delicious with mash.

Place a heavy based pan on a medium heat. Add chorizo and fry for about 5 mins. It will release plenty of oil. Remove chorizo and add onion, garlic, chilli, red pepper, sweet potatoes and sausages to the pan. Fry for about 10 mins until onion softens and sausage browns. Add paprika and cumin, cook for 1 min, stirring. Add wine and boil for 2 mins. Add tomatoes and stock. Simmer for 40 mins. Season to taste. Serve with rice, couscous, mash or crusty bread - anything to soak up the juices!

from your neighbourhood team.. As Christmas has come and gone for another year and we look forward to 2014, we know that many of you out there will have vowed to stick to your New Year’s resolutions - some of these more realistic than others. But why not forget those promises you know you won’t keep, and make safety and security your priority this year? It’s a new year so let’s make a new start on protecting your stuff. Don’t let burglars get the better of you. Keep those new gadgets and gifts your received from Santa out of sight, and make sure your house is always secure, even if you’re home and you are doing everything you can to keep thieves away from your car. We imagine that for most of you, your shiny new smartphone will be at the top of the list of your prized possessions. Make recording your IMEI number and registering the handset at www.immobilise.com the first thing you do. If it is lost or stolen you will then have a better chance of getting it back. Activate a keypad locking mechanism and download a tracking app. Don’t flash your phone about when you are in public. Keep it in a fastened bag or pocket, and don’t leave it on the table when you are out at a cafe or pub. And dare we move on to the next major date on our calendars? Valentine’s Day. That’s right, the day for love is fast approaching and being that our interactions are moving online these days we would like to take the time to remind you of the dos and don’ts. Use trusted sites if you’re planning to start an online dating profile. Talk to friends and family as they may be able to recommend a particular site.

Whether you are looking for love online or otherwise, remember the following safety tips: • BE MYSTERIOUS. Do not reveal too much personal information about yourself, whether in person or online. Do not tell your new date where you live and under no circumstances reveal financial information. Be wary of requests for money. • BE PATIENT. If you meet someone new on a night out, why not wait to take it further? Don’t go home with them or invite them back to yours. If you do decide to do this, make sure you tell your friends who you are with and where you are going. Never ditch a friend for a new squeeze, leaving them alone. • BE SENSIBLE. Make sure the venues for your first and early dates are in public places, like restaurants or bars. Make your own way there and your own way home again. Always tell a family member or friend about your plans. • BE PERCEPTIVE. If your gut is telling you no, listen to it. Be conscious of anyone who comes on too strong, too quickly. Watch out for those who seem to have troubled lives and beware of people who make inappropriate comments or appear to be aggressive or pushy. • BE DRINK AWARE. While you may choose a tipple to calm your nerves, too much alcohol can impair your judgement. Don’t drink excessively when meeting new people. It takes time to build that trust with someone, plus you will, no doubt, want to remember the date. Finally, we want to thank you for your help tackling crime in the area over the past year. Keep reporting suspicious activity and crime to 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and as a community we can really help to keep our area a safe place to live.

NEW YEAR….NEW START As we head into 2014 it is encouraging to see that the latest economic forecasts are positive following the doom and gloom of recent years. For those readers who are considering making career changes over the coming months the statistics are encouraging. A recent survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation found that over the next year 52% of employers are planning to increase the number of their permanent workforce. Even more encouraging is the fact that KPMG record “the sharpest increase in permanent wages for six years”. As a recruitment business specialising in permanent, temporary and contract staff we can validate these statements as we have seen on a local level far more activity from potential employers over the past six months. Similarly the talent pool of available candidates has become far more fluid as confidence increases and employees look to new opportunities and progression. If you are considering a career move then the traditional methods of job hunting are undoubtedly

still valid but you cannot underestimate these days the power of social media and networking. Using platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn you can very quickly build your own profile and allow potential employers to see not only your employment history but also an insight into your personality. In most cases employers look not only for skills and experience but also the correct “fit” with their company’s culture. But always be media savvy. Remember that updates shared on Saturday night after some hard partying will probably not appeal to potential employers on a Monday morning! Are you sure you need to leave your current employer? Many of our clients will be reluctant to interview candidates who have job hopped. Maybe negotiating a pay increase whilst building on your current skills and experience would be a better option? We will cover negotiating a pay increase in the next issue of the magazine. © Helen Jones, Solos Consultants

MUSICAL roundup

If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: info@ng5.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.

Grand Central Chorus Already preparing for Harrogate in May! Now that Christmas is over, the Grand Central Chorus is focused on the big UK Barbershop event of 2014 – the UK National Championships being held this year in Harrogate on Saturday 24th May and involving 48 choruses from across the UK. Over the next few months Grand Central will spend many hours fine tuning every aspect of their two contest songs so that when they take the stage in Harrogate they are fully prepared to deliver the highest possible standard of performance, and so hopefully achieve yet further success, having won the Gold medal when they last competed in 2012. The chorus welcome potential new members to come along to any of their weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 7.15pm at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. See their website www.grandcentralchorus. com for full details or follow them on Twitter @GrandCentralMen If you would like Grand Central Chorus to sing at your event, contact Peter on 01530243822 or e-mail publicity.gcc@gmail.com. They can provide a quartet, small chorus or full chorus of up to fifty singers as required. Fees are negotiable and quality is guaranteed.

Hucknall and Linby Brass Band concert on February 15th at 7.30pm "Music from round the world" at St Peter and St Paul's church, Ruffs Drive. Tickets £4 on the door or from Vicar 0115 963 3640.

Ladies Harmony Chorus

Imari is a Ladies Harmony Chorus founded in 1985 and we love to sing. The chorus loves to perform too and is available to sing at any event. We will gladly help raise funds for charity by performing songs from our repertoire. So, if you are female and over 16 years old, come along and sing with us. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Victoria Road, Draycott DE72 3PS If you would like to book the chorus for your event, or want to find out more information, please contact:Jan Adamson (Events) 01332 674679 or Linda Gourlay (Musical Director) 0115 932 5855

Are you interested in singing? Do you want to free your voice and enjoy good company?

Alan Johnson singers are looking for new members-men and women- to join them. Alan Johnson teaches all choir members to bring out their individual voice using the ‘Bel Canto’ technique. All choir members have lessons with Alan and learn at an individual pace. Getting into singing as an adult is lovely. Singing is a stress buster, gets us breathing properly, helps to release endorphins-the body’s ‘happy chemicals’, helps the energy flow and gets those feelings out. Many people feel singing gives them a therapeutic experience. The more your singing technique improves, the more control you gain and confidence grows as result. Individual lessons with Alan helps to get you started and you’ll find that you will be able to develop your voice-it is like a sport, the more you put in the more you get out! We meet every Tuesday @ The Lakeside Arnold from 19.30-21.30. You are most welcome to make an informal visit. For further information about The Alan Johnson Singers and lessons, please contact Alan and Debbie Johnson Tel 0115 9200417 or Email ajsingers@btinternet.com

HUCKNALL’S GOT TALENT by Maureen Newton In 1912 a man with a tenor voice came to sing in Hucknall at the Byron Rink on Vine Terrace. He was so famous that in 1916 he became a member of the New York Metropolitan Opera Company singing alternatively with Caruso who greatly admired his voice. Who was he? The stage name of this man was Morgan Kingston. He was born at Sparrows Forge, near Wednesbury, on 16th March 1875 to John and Jane Kingston who named him Alfred Webster Kingston. John was a coal miner. The family must have come to Hucknall when Alfred was very small since his older brothers were admitted to Beardall Street School in 1877 and Alfred followed them in 1879. In the 1881 census John and Jane were living in the colliery houses on Beardall Street with their three sons John age 9 and William age 7, born Tipton and Alfred age 6 born Wednesbury. Electoral registers show John Kingston on the voting list for 1886 living in Beardall Street and the 1891 census shows the family are still there with two more children born Hucknall. If the house numbers have not changed it was almost opposite Morvern Avenue. Younger members of the family were baptised at St. John the Evangelist Church. As a child Alfred was a chorister at St. John’s where he was encouraged by Arthur Stanley Douglas who was organist and choirmaster. Later he often sang in local concerts. On at least three occasions in 1901 newspapers reported him singing in Hucknall. First as a soloist in “Sir John Stainers ‘Crucifixion’ when the oratorio was undertaken by the Congregational Church Choir with the assistance of a few friends and a very gratifying audience assembled in the church. For this occasion the services of two rising Hucknall vocalists had been secured namely Mr. Henry Dobson (bass) and Mr. A. Kingston (tenor). It gave an opportunity to Mr. Kingston to display his vocal powers to the full which he did in fine style.” Secondly he was at St. John’s “where the church was decked with flowers and the anthems ‘They have taken away my Lord’ and ‘Why Seek Ye’ were sung with the solos being taken by Messrs. Holland and Kingston.” The third occasion was at the Theatre Royal in Hucknall on Annesley Road when a performance was arranged for the benefit of Mr. Sydney Spenser, manager. Invitations had been issued to local talented artistes to make up the programme and among these were the St. John’s Glee Singers with solos by Messrs. Kingston and Henderson which were received by loud expressions of delight and approval. Alfred probably worked at No.1 Colliery (Top Pit) with his brothers John William and Frederick who have all been found in the accident report lists for this colliery.

One newspaper report states he “began work as a pony driver going on to the coal face in his teens.” On December 25th 1895 Alfred Webster Kingston, collier, married Henrietta May Dignum, daughter of Thomas Dignum a draper. The ceremony took place at St. John’s and the couple made their home at 82, Beardall Street. Their first child John Thomas was born a year afterwards, then two years later William Clifford and both were baptised at St. John’s. In 1906 Alfred left Hucknall and moved to work at Mansfield (Crown Farm) Colliery at Forest Town. He continued singing and was allowed to work three days a week at the coal face and spent the remainder studying music in London. 1909 was a momentous year for him since he made his professional debut at Queens Hall in London and was asked to sing in America. In Chicago Maestro Campagini said “Morgan Kingston is the greatest Manrico of his day.” Later he went to the New York Metropolitan Opera Company. On his return to London he performed at Covent Garden singing various roles. Some time later his health began to decline and eventually his musical career ended completely. He moved to Stoke Poges in Buckinghamshire and died in 1936 aged 64.

His career had been watched with great interest by Hucknallites since he was a chorister at St. John’s. Although he had become very famous he came to sing in Hucknall in 1912 where there was a large company at the Byron Rink to welcome him. He was supported by Madame Florence Farnsworth, contralto and the Excelsior Prize Band. “The scene was picturesque with the musicians ensconced in a mass of foliage reminiscent of a sea side pavilion.” The audience brought the house down with tumultuous applause which didn’t subside until he sang again. When the concert closed it remained long in the memories of those privileged to be present.

Abandoned pups need your help! The puppies appear to be from four different litters including Collie and German Shepherd breeds. How they ended up being literally dumped by the canal still remains a mystery. The vet practice and charity agree the youngsters are lucky to have been found – and thankfully all are in good condition.

Local animal lovers are being asked to help look after 15 puppies, all of different breeds, found abandoned by a member of the public next to a Nottingham canal. Initially taken to a vet practice, the pups are in the care of local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Entirely run by volunteers, and equally totally funded by donations, this small charity is stretched and appealing for help for the pups.

The pups’ care is a large expense for Animal Accident Rescue Unit, so it is appealing to anyone who can donate funds for food and care, offer a foster or even permanent home to a pup or more. HUCKNALL TOURISM &

REGENERATION GROUP The final event for our Christmas 2013, was our Christmas Shop Window Display competition for which we had over 30 entries. These entries were from many different areas of the town centre and the judging was done by Jackie Derbyshire and Denis Robinson of the Hucknall Dispatch. There were four prizes awarded; first prize was a trophy, certificate and medal which was awarded to Hucknall Home Improvements on Annesley Road (pictured). The second prize went to Thomas Bond Opticians on the High Street and third prize to Sense, the Charity Shop, also on the High Street. A special prize went to Iceland (Ashgate Road) for their achievement and involvement with the community. The entries were varied and included some very unusual themes. We will be running this competition again next year and we hope that all the people who had decorated their shop windows and not entered in the competition will, please, do so next time

Ella’s Teen Talk: New Year’s Resolutions a good thing?....

New year is always an exciting time where you can look back on the past year with pride, memories Ella Higginbotham aged 15 and, in my case, relief that I can move on from last year’s me and hopefully grow into someone with a better hairstyle or more grown up persona. However, setting a new year’s resolution? What is the point? You never hear people three months down the line giving an update of their resolution; in fact it’s a surprise if they can even remember what it was in the first place. I believe it is just something we feel like we should take part in; there is really no gain from it except trying to seem more committed than friends and family who are equally determined to stick to their resolutions! So be careful, there is always that one competitive member of the family that will gloat about how they’ve lost 5 pounds with their new lifestyle or giving up alcohol for the month (I mean, does anyone really care?!) However, if your dad or mum own a gym then I bet you love the new year, you think new year’s resolutions are a gift from the gods because your parents will be raking the money in! If over 50% of members actually get their money’s worth from going to the gym then it will be a miracle. So some new year’s resolutions really just cause unneeded financial problems, why do adults spend money on silly promises when they could buy their lovely teenage ‘children’ new things?! That would be much more beneficial for everyone! If we, as teenagers, are the ones making the resolutions then we are always much more realistic than our parents. Most of us will simply aim to go to more parties and socialise and have a fun year; this is a much better idea than trying to be sensible by dieting or setting life goals as it is a lot more achievable! But whether you’re an adult or a teenager, if you Next have your heart set on a resolution and you are ready to be fully committed issue: then I say this; why wait for a new year to set yourself a target to do something? If you want to do something Getting the then just do it, no excuses. If you are that determined then surely you would most from like a head start…

To Curry f(l)avour! Pupils aged 5-11 who are on the autistic spectrum had a cookery session with Angela Wilson in November at the specialist NORSACA School, Sutherland House, in Ravenshead. Angela Wilson is founder and owner of an authentic Indian cooking school, Anjula Devi, based in Hampton, Middlesex. She was taught by her father to cook authentic Indian food at the age of 10 and still cooks the same way even now. Angela’s cooking skill got her through to the Semi Finals on ITV1’s Food Glorious Food, and she is a champion of children with special needs. She says, “These kids never cease to impress me. I always focus on what they can achieve, rather than what they may not be able to achieve.” Angela lists her two biggest passions in life as cooking great authentic Indian food, and using her cooking skills to help children who have special needs. She says, “Everyone is different. Some people love playing the piano. Some people love watching football. I love helping children with special needs which is why I am establishing a charity called SENsational Kids in the New Year to teach children a number of new skills through cookery.”

Awards Pay Tribute to Exceptional Local Women

The exceptional role played by two local Guiders in inspiring and mentoring hundreds of girls and young women across Bulwell and Hucknall has been acknowledged with the presentation of two special awards. Sally Illsley, Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding Midlands, has presented Chief Commissioner’s Awards for Outstanding Service for Local Guiding to Hucknall Rainbow Leader Julie Bentley-Housden and Bulwell Guider Eleanor Lang. Julie Bentley-Housden was nominated for her outstanding support to Girlguiding in Hucknall and Newstead, with her citation reflecting on her unstinting enthusiasm, especially when it comes to Rainbows, who are the youngest members of the Guiding community. ‘You've run Rainbow sleepovers even though everyone thought you were mad,’ it reads. ‘You proved them all wrong and it's now a yearly highlight!’ Eleanor Lang is from Bulwell, where she is District Commissioner and Leader with 87th Nottingham (St Mary's) Guides. Having held numerous roles within Girlguiding Nottinghamshire – from running camps to helping at Gang Shows - Eleanor is also a key player in organising large-scale events. For details on volunteering and membership opportunities within Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, call county headquarters on 0115 987 7220 or visit www. girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk
