Transport scheme puts people on the road to employment The job prospects of more than 100 people got a kick start last year thanks to the Nottinghamshire County Council funded Wheels to Work scheme. Wheels to Work provides a six month loan of a moped or helps fund other transport solutions for people who have been offered a job but have no other way of getting to and from their place of work or training. The moped loan scheme costs just £15 per week and includes: • A six month moped loan • Moped tax, insurance and breakdown cover • Servicing and maintenance of the moped • Protective clothing (including helmet) and heavy duty lock for your moped • Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) To qualify, users of the scheme need to be 16 or over, live in Nottinghamshire, have a provisional (or full) driving licence, been offered a job for a minimum of 16 hours per week and have no other reasonable means of getting to their place of work.
During the moped loan period, users of the scheme need to plan for their transport needs when their time on the project ends, such as saving up for their own vehicle. They are encouraged to deposit regular savings with Nottingham Credit Union. Thanks to the County Council funding, the scheme has recently expanded its fleet up to 40 mopeds. It operates out of bases at Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Bingham and Retford and is run by Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire (RCAN). Nottinghamshire County Council has provided £50,000 to fund the running costs of Wheels to Work this year which was used to buy the new mopeds and for other running costs. The scheme is also funded in the Rushcliffe area by the Rushcliffe Community partnership. For further information visit the Wheels to Work website, www.wheelstowork.org.uk or call 01623 727 620.

pets Severely injured young cat rescued by local animal charity
Help in paying for treatment for a young cat called Belle, who has severe injuries, is being sought by a Nottinghamshire charity. Belle was found straying in Nottingham before being taken to a vet practice. Experts believe her injuries are consistent with having had boiling water poured on her – possibly deliberately – thus severely damaging her skin. The vet practice called local animal charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit (AARU), which has agreed to pay for five month old Belle's treatment and to find her a home. The treatment costs are already mounting to hundreds of pounds. With a long road of treatment ahead of bathing, painkillers and antibiotics, AARU is appealing to the local community to help. Robina Varley from the charity explains: ‘Despite her injuries Belle’s doing well and is an affectionate and trusting cat. Her wounds are open and sore so she’s being bathed daily, she’s on constant pain relief but coping well. We’re committed to providing whatever treatment and care she needs.’ Belle is being fostered locally but will eventually need a new home. If you want to help this poor cat, please visit AARU's website at www.animalaccident.org.uk, email: admin@aaru.org.uk or call 0115 931 4274 on how to donate and to find out about rehoming. All other calls to the charity must be made using its Lifeline number 0115 932 1555.

TEN TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS! It’s the start of a new year and for those with children in Year 9 (or year 8 at some schools) there begins the nail biting process of choosing the subject options that they will see through to their GCSEs or equivalent in Year 11. So the team at Arnold Hill Academy in Nottinghamshire have put together their top tips for parents to help them support their children at this important stage of their school career.
1. Check out which subjects your child really enjoys. Enthusiasm is a powerful motivator. 2. Take a look at your child’s progress. Doing well in a subject is a sign that your child is quite happy to meet the challenges of further study in that area. 3. Encourage your child to talk to their teachers or go for a chat yourself. They can give advice on what the course entails and whether it suits your child’s particular talents 4. But make sure that your child is not planning to choose a course based on their current subject teacher. 5.The same goes for friends’ choices. Keep an eye on decisions based upon friends’ options choices and influence. 6. Take a close look together at how the course is structured. Look at the balance of exams and assessment for each course and check that this suits how your child works best. 7. In fact balance is a good theme to follow. Your child’s choices will ideally represent a good variety of subjects that will keep their options wide open for the future. 8. If your child has ideas about what they might want to do as a career, then take a look at which subjects will best support them in this endeavour – it all helps! 9. Beware of falling into the pushy parent trap! Be open-minded about the paths your children will walk and embrace their talents! 10. Talk to the school about how they keep an eye on your kids as they start this new journey.

Could you picture someone else in your family? A new campaign was launched in January to recruit an army of local carers to support adults who need help to live independently.
Volunteers Needed in Your Community
Shared Lives, which is being run by the County Council, aims to recruit carers from across the county to help support people with physical or learning disabilities, older people or mental health needs. All carers will receive training and ongoing support and will be paid depending on the needs of the person or people they care for. Shared Lives is looking for carers who can provide a range of support: • Long term accommodation and support: people who have room in their home and are willing to have someone to live as part of their family for some time. This may be months or years.
My sight Nottinghamshire, are looking for people who are: great listeners, friendly and committed to join our Volunteer Home Visiting Team. My sight Home Visitors help to support visually impaired people who live in your community by visiting them once a week for short walks, reading mail or just a cup of tea and a chat. Not only will this be an opportunity for you to help reduce the social isolation that can affect many visually impaired people, but you will also get the chance to meet new people, help your community and use your own people skills. If you’re interested in becoming a Home Visitor or if you would like any more information, then please contact us on: 0115 9706806.

• Short breaks: people who can offer a short break for someone while the people who normally support them are having a holiday or have to be away. • Regular short-term support: people who can offer support in the day to promote independence and help people become part of their community. Councillor Kevin Rostance, Chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “We are looking for caring people who have some time and space in their lives to help an adult. You may be a retired person who has room in your home; a parent who has spare time in the day or someone who works in the week, but has evenings or weekends free. “Shared Lives is a vital scheme which will help older or disabled people to experience ordinary life with real relationships. Please get in touch if you think you can help.” Anyone who is interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer can visit www.nottinghamshire. gov.uk/sharedlives, email: sharedlives@ nottscc.gov.uk or phone 0300 500 80 80.

I am pleased to say that crime and disorder has continued to fall rapidly over the past 12 months. Crime in Hucknall and the surrounding villages has dropped by more than 19% and there were 460 less victims of crime than the previous year. Damage has reduced by 26%, theft by 33% and burglary by 16%. We have done this by closely managing offender behaviour and deploying specialised teams in hotspot areas, while working with other agencies. We have spoken in schools regarding road safety, antisocial behaviour and criminal damage and the effect these offences can have on victims. We have also pioneered restorative justice in Nottinghamshire in which offenders have to face up to their actions and make reparation. We continue to read the Neighbourhood Priority Surveys you send us and these form the basis of our local policing priorities. The existing priorities can be viewed at the following web address – www. nottinghamshire.police.uk Operation DIVOT to tackle burglaries in Hucknall has had a positive outcome – in the last two weeks we have
arrested more than 15 known offenders and executed 12 search warrants. Many of these offenders have been sent straight to prison. Inspector Nick Butler from Ashfield south and Hucknall said: “Burglars are very often opportunists who will look for homes which have insecure windows and doors, or keys left in locks. There are very simple steps that householders can take to ensure they do not fall victim to similar burglaries. “They include locking all entrances and windows when you go to bed at night, or even when you leave a room. Keep keys in a safe place out of view and make sure valuable items are not left out on display. “If you have a flap for a dog or cat, it is best to have one that can only be opened from the inside.” Plenty of useful crime prevention advice is available on the Nottinghamshire Police website www.nottinghamshire. police.uk Anyone with information about crime in their area should contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 ext 806 3633 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. HUCKNALL PITS AND PEOPLE by Maureen Newton Demand from industry and transport for coal to drive machinery, railways or ships was the reason for the incredible expansion of the coal mining industry between 1800 and 1900. Early coal mines were fairly small. Until around 1840 few mines were worked by more than 50 men, but as technical advances allowed the working of deeper seams, more men were employed and the capital necessary to start a new colliery increased proportionately.
Eliza Ellis wrote in a letter dated 28th March 1861; “On the edge of my window lies a specimen of the stone first turned up on Wednesday in commencing the new coal pits at Hucknall. My brothers and John Edward (my nephew) and the working partner went over on that day to take possession and each person dug a spadeful of earth and then a cheer was raised for the new company”.
