THREE WAYS WITH CHICKEN

Quite often I buy a whole chicken which can easily provide my family with three delicious meals and plenty of stock for freezing and making into soups and stews. These recipes are equally delicious with left over roast chicken, however I find poaching the bird keeps the meat moist. For a 2kg chicken (£7.40 from Beechdale Butchers)- place it in a large saucepan and add 1 carrot, 1 onion (halved), 10 peppercorns and 2 bay leaves. Cover with water, bring the lidded pan to the boil and simmer for about 1hr 30 mins. Remove the chicken and cool. Drain the cooking liquid. This is great stock and can be frozen in plastic soup containers. Then get all the meat off the bones and divide up for the recipes.

Add the tomato puree and cook for 2 mins then add the tinned tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the chorizo and chicken to the pan and warm through. Season to taste. For a bit more heat add a dash of tabasco. Serve with pasta. (serves 4)

from Sergeant Nick Butler..... It might have been a bitterly cold start to the year but since the clocks rolled forward I’m feeling a little bit more optimistic that summer is on the way. I must admit I’ve not needed to mow my lawn yet but I’m sure it won’t be long before the green-fingered among you will be out smartening up your gardens. So where do you keep your lawn mower throughout the winter months? If your answer is in the wooden building at the bottom of the garden then allow me to offer a bit of ‘sheducation’. Now the nights are a little lighter we’ve seen an increase in shed break ins in Hucknall. We’d like to nip this in the bud (these jokes get worse) as soon as possible. In these incidents the items stolen range from tools, fishing gear and pushbikes. From one shed thieves made off with a chain saw and an angle grinder. These are expensive items to replace and these kind of break-ins can also have an impact on your insurance. So I’m urging you to do everything you can to prevent this crime in the first place. If you live in Hucknall East or Hucknall Central we can offer CREMARK property marking kits, free of charge. These kits allow for clearly visible security coding using your postcode and the house number or first two letters of your house name to make the item identifiable and traceable… and less easy for an opportunistic thief to sell on.

These have been made available thanks to special funding to combat this type of crime. The kits should mark around 40 items of property, so when you have marked yours please pass the kit on to a neighbour. I’ve listed a few more shed safety tips here: • Keep your shed in good condition so it’s not easy to break into. • Consider investing in an alarm. • Fit a padlock to your shed and consider putting wire mesh across its windows. • Fit a motion-activated outside light to deter burglars who rely on the cover of darkness. • Plant prickly shrubs and plants near windows, drainpipes and fences. • Use gravel on driveways and paths to help alert you to anyone outside. • Lock any gates to your drive or back garden. Despite this spate of shed breaks the good news is that the detection rate for crime in the area has improved. In fact, criminals have less than a one in three chance of getting away without being caught. Our goal is now to drive these figures down even further and continue our work making sure Hucknall and Ashfield South is one of the safest places to live. If you know anything about the break-ins above or see anything you think is unusual ring the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

pets ‘Please help me and my friends’ woofs Solo Readers may recall a Nottinghamshire animal rescue charity recently appealing for a permanent home for a friendly female dog who - from being rehomed, was homeless again. Despite best efforts, Solo is still waiting for that special someone and home – along with many other animals in the care of Animal Accident Rescue Unit.

Martins Farm

Tel: 0115 926 8703 www.martinsfarm.co.uk

Aged nine years, this gentle-natured terriercross is playful and well-socialised. A true family dog, Solo likes plenty of company, routine and daily walks – and is already microchipped, spayed and vaccinated.

Dorket Head Farm, Arnold, NG5 8PU

Are you that special someone for Solo - or know someone who is? If so discover more about her by calling 07946-545256 – leaving a message if necessary with your postcode and contact details for the adoption volunteer’s response - or email admin@aaru.org.uk. As is standard for the charity, her potential home would be pre-checked to ensure a good match.

Helen@preventunwantedpets.co.uk

Approx 2000 healthy animals are put to sleep every week in the UK Low cost speying & neutering schemes for pets available in the Nottingham area reg charity: 702569

Solo’s care continues to be provided meanwhile by Animal Accident Rescue Unit – which is entirely run by volunteers spanning drivers, telephonists and fundraisers. This small charity, however, urgently needs more volunteers and of all roles, fostering is currently the most pressing: a truly rewarding role making a huge difference to an individual animal’s future! If you can offer even a short-term refuge to care for a cat or dog until Animal Accident Rescue Unit can rehome it, please contact Chris on 0115-956 3799 leaving a message if necessary, with your contact details - or email admin@aaru.org.uk. Space in your home and heart are all that are needed – along with reliability, common-sense plus cat or dog care experience – though advice and guidance are given. Fostered cats need a safe and secure haven, as they are not allowed outdoors. For general information and all other matters, please call the charity’s lifeline number 0115-932 1555.
