Mark Spencer discusses.... Faster Broadband The Spencer family is usually a harmonious unit, but the one disaster guaranteed to bring noisy chaos to our household is the internet breaking down. Suddenly online banking can’t be done, bills can’t be paid, business emails can’t be sent and most contentiously, two teenagers can no longer check their Facebook. The advance of the internet has been extraordinary and its spread into our everyday lives relentless. We’re doing our Christmas shopping online; we’re tracking and tracing where those presents got to; we’re managing our council tax and car insurance; our children are doing their homework and research, all on the internet. Whether you’re searching for a job or booking a holiday, the chances are you’ll do it online. That is, if you’re in an area with decent broadband. I’ve met with BT to discuss the problems some of the outlying areas in Sherwood have been having with their broadband and to see what we can do to improve it. What I found particularly interesting is that the problem of slow or nonexistent broadband is not restricted to the countryside: many parts of the city are also affected. The good news is that the County Council have already done a great deal of the legwork on improving Notts’ broadband and have run a campaign that even BT was impressed by. The County Council’s aim is to get Nottinghamshire bumped up the list of priority counties waiting to receive

superfast broadband and they have done a bang up job of making the case for Notts. The reality is that broadband is no longer a luxury item or a leisure activity; it’s a business tool. We are currently in the most important retail period of the year: 23% of annual retail sales will be made across the 10 weeks over Christmas and a quarter of sales will be online. The Centre for Retail Research also points out “A poor Christmas, as seen in 2008, led to 20 major retailers going into administration and...the loss of 40,000 jobs” We must do everything we can to put Nottinghamshire in a prime position to maximize the potential of online trade and get that cash coming into Nottinghamshire. If companies cannot do business efficiently in or with Nottinghamshire, they will go elsewhere. If local customers cannot access the internet to purchase from small or start up companies in Notts; those companies will go bust. If you are looking for work, the reality is that the internet will likely be essential to your search and indeed if you are looking for staff, you need them to be able to find you easily. For many of you however, I do not need to extol the virtues of getting online; I know you’re trying to do just that and have been thwarted by your postcodes. To you I would say, I am lobbying BT and am determined to build on the progress the County Council has made. If we want improved access to the world wide web, we’re going to have to fight for it. Finally, may I take this opportunity to with you and your family and very merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get in touch: I was elected to represent Sherwood and that’s exactly what I want to do to the best of my ability. If you need help, if there is an issue local or national that you think I should be aware of or if I can support your group or project, let me know at mark.spencer.mp@parliament.uk or on 0115 968 1186. For most people, Christmas is a time for fun and general merriment with the family, but for the same reasons it can also be quite a stressful occasion. The countdown to Christmas is well and truly under way and we have no doubt you will be busy writing your lists for Santa and buying presents for your friends and family. While you are out soaking up the festive atmosphere and spending your hard earned cash please take a moment to think about personal safety and the security of your vehicles and property. Christmas shopping is stressful enough without having to do it all over again because a thief has stolen gifts from your car. Every year, numerous motorists fall victim to this type of crime, whether they are halfway through a shopping trip, dropped their bags off at the car and gone back for round two, or returned home from a shopping trip and not yet unloaded the bags from the car. Don’t learn the hard way – remember to lock all your car doors, make sure windows are closed and under no circumstances leave items on display when your car is unattended. In the coming weeks you may well be out in town, at a Christmas party, or toasting the festive season with your friends and family. We want you to enjoy yourself but remain safe, so we would ask you to plan your night out, drink responsibly, and don't leave your drinks unattended.

If you feel the atmosphere getting heated, and it’s not the dinner in the oven, take some time out. Make a snowman in the garden, or if it’s not a white Christmas, play with all your new gadgets and gismos. While we want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe festive period, we will take robust action to remove anyone from the street who is engaging in inappropriate or violent behaviour. No one wants to spend Christmas in police custody with the knowledge that your family and friends are celebrating without you. Make sure you are kept up to date with what is happening in the area next year by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text. It is a great way to be kept in the loop and I would encourage everyone to sign up by visiting w w w. n e i g h b o u r h o o d a l e r t . co.uk.

GEM Connection Ladies Barbershop Chorus kick off summer with a bang!

Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass Band In what has been a wonderful year for the band, the highlight of which was the band playing in the Nottingham Arena (Ice Stadium) in front of 6000 people for the Torvil and Dean event and the arrival of the Olympic Flame. This is the bands largest audience in their short history. They were also privileged to take part in the Ashfield Festival to welcome local Paralympian Ollie Hynds. Ollie who took centre stage won Gold Silver and Bronze medals in the games. The band finishes off a very successful year with a hectic few weeks. On December 16th the band play a joint concert with the Lace City Chorus. This will be held in the Nottingham Albert Hall at 2.30pm. This concert is in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Support Group. On the 17th December they will once again be playing on the green in the beautiful setting of Linby village. This will be to celebrate the Christmas lighting festival. The band are also playing in the Tibshelf parish church for their Christmas carol service, date to be announced. The band’s final engagement of the year will be the very popular Festive Concert held in the Hucknall Parish Church on 22nd December starting at 7.30. The band would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a very Musical New Year.

On the 21 July, GEM ladies packed up their bags and headed up to Calver to take part in a Barbershop singing retreat with Sally McLean, the renowned chorus director of the White Rosettes, multiple time winners of UK barbershop competition. A lot of laughs, tea, singing and frolics were had by all and I would like to thank everyone who made it such a fantastic weekend. GEM also sang at the Derby Beer Festival on 11 July to encouraging crowds, startling them into silence with Bad Romance to begin with, and cheered into an encore after the last song. It was a successful night for all, including the two new recruits who completed their first sing out that night – congratulations! GEM are now preparing for Biddulph music festival on 6 October and of course the UK Barbershop convention in October. The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) holds a National Convention annually with many choruses taking part each year. Each chorus is marked on their choice of music, presentation and quality of the singing. GEM Connection have been practising hard and are looking to improve on last year’s scores. The Chorus meets every Thursday from 7:30pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. If you would like to find out more, come along to a rehearsal, become part of the mailing list or book us for an event, please email pro@gemconnection.org or contact Flin Tubby on 07545 316 986. Come along and see how GEM sparkles!

All children, including beginners, are welcome to come for a free trial however they must be able to swim a minimum of 100 mtrs without stopping and ride a bike. Head Coach Steve Lloyd commented “Triathlon has seen a surge in popularity over the last few years and took centre stage at the London 2012 Olympics where British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee took Gold and Bronze respectively. The sport is great for kids as the fun bit is training across the 3 different sports of swimming, biking and running.” The sessions form part of Nottingham’s successful Absolute Triathlon Club launched in 2009 and has subsequently raft of awards including the Nottingham Club of the Year.

Exciting research project for families in Nottingham Do you have a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months? Does your child constantly move around, fidget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Is this behaviour difficult for you to manage at home during meal and play times or watching TV, and when you are out and about, shopping, or visiting? Researchers from the University of Nottingham are inviting local families to take part in an innovative research project with the chance to participate in parenting programmes designed to help you manage your child’s behaviour and improve family life. This will take just 1 to 2 hours each week for a period of 12 weeks.

Our next parenting programmes will begin in January 2013 To find out more and take part in a short interview to see if your family might benefit from participating, contact 07881 280369 or email Elvira.Perez@nottingham.ac.uk To advertise call 07817 609444 or email: info@ng5.org.uk

The first unit in the UK was formed 25 years ago this year and Mavis started the 1st Hucknall North Rainbows unit in 1989. My 1920s Hucknall Christmas The first sign that Christmas was getting nearer was seeing shop window displays in Hucknall a little brighter with decorations. They were in the form of tinsel and coloured paper. Some shops did start to run Xmas clubs; often called 12 week clubs for customers who paid a little each week to purchase presents. I remember the preparations as baking increased, the cake was made, and two puddings were put into basins with a white cloth over each. The cake was dark with fruit, black treacle, and brown sugar (into which a sly finger was dipped as mum turned a blind eye) and tarts and mince pies were stored in biscuit tins. Nearer the time a chocolate roll was bought, covered in brown icing, dusted with white icing sugar and a robin which was saved each year was perched on the top of this ‘Yule Log’. At the same time the cake was brought out to be covered with white icing to make a winter scene. Small pot figures of Santa Claus and Eskimo’s on sleighs were available and once bought were saved each year after being washed and carefully wrapped. Decorations were put up in December. Paper flowers were made and tissue paper ‘shawls’ were made for draping over the mirrors, picture frames, and every other surface around the walls. Lastly garlands were strung up to make a veritable ‘Fairy Land’ all of our own. The Christmas tree was decorated. It was an artificial one with tiny candles in metal holders on the ends of the branches – only to be lit on Christmas Eve and after tea on Christmas Day. The holly bough was not forgotten; this was hung and decorated with sweets, sugar pigs, Santa’s, mice, etc. to be removed one by one to each child through the twelve days of Christmas. The Market day before Christmas was not to be missed. It was always a treat to us children especially in winter because it kept open later in those days. The stalls were lit by paraffin and gas lights which gave out a

golden glow over the goods. The fish and chip stall at the front stayed in business until the last of the people came out of the Scala Cinema. The rear entrance and exit opened onto Ogle Street. All the stallholders made a great show of seasonal goods. Poultry was a rare luxury but now hung in rows to be admired. Hares and rabbits were common-place, for each area had its local supplier either someone who bred them ‘for the pot’ or the local poacher. The cockerel was still unplucked when it came home and what an event the plucking was. The wing and tail feathers became Indian head-dresses and I remember a neighbour making pictures from breast and hackle feathers. My early Christmas mornings seem to merge into one. I always seemed to get the things I wanted. Oh the excitement of finding Santa had been. Delving into the packages and reading who has sent the presents to Santa for you was a delight that I remember with a feeling of longing. Some items never changed. A bag of favourite toffees, an apple, an orange, a handful of nuts, all in their shells at the bottom of the stocking. Some of the nuts such as almonds, brazils, walnuts or filberts we never saw at other times and were just magic. There was always a warm room with a good fire for us to get up but never a thought of who had risen early to get things ready. Meals and food appeared as in story books. Meat to be carved, beef, pork or mutton, a roast bird, maybe later a pork pie and boiled bacon. Very rarely ham. We lived on the remains of these in the form of stews or sandwiches for days afterwards. But what luxury! Then all the sweet things– to us children it was wonderland. One essential visit we had to make on Christmas Day was to see our grandma who saved silver threepenny pieces to give her grandchildren one each. Notes from the late Frank Blinco of a Hucknall Christmas edited by Maureen Newton.

It’s never too early to book for Christmas... It’s never too early to book for Christmas and with such a great value there’s no better place than The Green Dragon on Watnall Road in Hucknall. The Christmas menus are hot off the press and have been eagerly anticipated this year. In the last 12 months there’s been lots of changes at The Green Dragon and the food offering has gone from strength to strength. The pub is expecting quite a few bookings so getting-in early is highly recommended. Menus are not only available from the bar but you can see them online by visiting www.pubpeople.com and clicking on the The Green Dragon’s logo. The menu has been pain-stakingly put together by Pub People’s catering team and we think it’s the best value three course Christmas Fayre around. Priced at only £15.99 for an adult and £9.99 for a child we think you’ll agree the selection of the starters, mains and desserts is amazing! As well as running the Christmas Fayre menu, Manager Carol and her team are offering a lunchtime special menu with three courses for a bargain price of only £8.99. The lunchtime special Christmas Fayre will be available during the same period as the main menu but only available during the afternoon. Carol, who’s been manager of the pub for over seven years now, says “We appreciate that our

main Christmas Fayre menu could be too much for some during the daytime, so we decided to offer a lighter and less intimidating menu for those wishing to dine at lunch.” Bookings for both the Christmas Fayre menus are now being taken and you can find the booking form on the back of the menu. Plans for New Years Eve are already a foot and to find out more you can check the pubs’ Facebook page or pop in and ask at the bar. If you fancy winning you and your family Christmas dinner next year, you can enter the pubs competition this Christmas, and have one less thing to worry about next year… To enter simply answer the following question, “On the ninth day of Christmas, what did my true love give to me?” Is it A) Lords a-leaping B) Ladies dancing or C) Geese a-laying. All you have to do is email your answer A, B or C to competition@pubpeople.com remembering to leave ‘The Green Dragon’ as the email subject. Winners will be notified in the New Year and you can enter as many times as you like. You will receive a confirmation email so you know we have received your entry. Good luck and merry Christmas.

HUCKNALL TOURISM &

REGENERATION GROUP

Nottingham Centre (National Trust)

Winter Programme

We, at Hucknall Tourism & Regeneration Group, have had a very hectic summer with our very popular FREE guided bus tours. So much so, that we had to put on an extra tour! Bookings for next year’s tours will be taken from Monday 1st April 2013. We have also been heavily involved with the Launch of the Annesley Old Church Project which took place on Saturday 8th September 2012. It was a very successful day with a good many visitors.

Don’t hibernate this winter! Join the Nottingham Centre, an active, friendly organisation affiliated to National Trust.

At the end of September, we had a stall at the Medieval Fayre held at Beauvale Priory which was another exciting event with jousting, fencing, etc. being displayed and people demonstrating medieval crafts.

Our winter programme of talks this year so far has included a wide variety of topics: ‘Mr. Straw’s House’, ‘The Galapagos Islands’, ‘What the Papers Said’ (in the Sixties) to name but a few.

On Sunday, 11th November, we will be laying a wreath at the Cenotaph in Titchfield Park for Remembrance Sunday. Also, in November, we are planning to have a stall on the Thursday Bargain Market, in Hucknall.

We start the New Year with ‘Coaching Days in Nottinghamshire’, by Adrian Henstock, on Tuesday, 11th January, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Wollaton Street, Nottingham, at 7.30pm. On Thursday, 13th January, at the Mechanics, North Sherwood Street, Nottingham, at 2.15pm. Valerie Henstock will talk about ‘Lord Byron in Venice’. On Tuesday evening, 1st February, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ian Morgan’s topic will be, ‘The Fosdyke’. Talks continue through until April when we begin our summer programme of walks and outings. You must be a member of National Trust to join the Centre. To find out more contact Don Thompsett on 01664 823500, e.mail: dthompsett@tiscali.co.uk, or better still, come along to a meeting. Admission is £3.00 for visitors, £2.00 members. Put those dates in your new diary!

Hucknall Carnival takes place on December 5th. We have booked a stall in the John Godber Centre. On the same night, the Third Hucknall Christmas Tree Festival will begin in St Mary Magdalene’s Church on the Market Place, where it is expected that 70 Christmas Trees will be on display. The Festival will continue through to lunchtime on Saturday, 8th December and is truly a wonderful sight to behold. We hope everyone will come and support us on these various occasions. Thank you, everyone, for your support during the year. Ken Robinson, Chairman.
