A New Chapel on Papplewick Lane by Maureen Newton

Some details for this article have been taken from an extensive account found by a happy ‘accident’ in Hucknall Star and Advertiser dated Friday June 28th 1901. It gives many names only a few of which can be incorporated in this article so if you would like to see the original it is available on microfilm in Hucknall Library. I thought the chapel was actually in Linby Parish but Linby and Papplewick for this building seem to be interchangeable as do Warp Mill or Walk Mill. Methodist Society meetings were held in the Linby – Papplewick area from 1815 onwards. It started in a very small way before the congregation picked up enough courage to hire a joiners shop at Warp Mill, Papplewick. In this building, located in a most picturesque setting near the river Leen and surrounded by trees, the members worshipped for 70 years. It was then discovered that the fabric of the building was unsafe and by December 1898 members thoughts began to centre round building a new chapel. Rev. T. Scowby was the Methodist Superintendent Minister at this time who had excellent organising abilities and was part of the team which entered into negotiations with the steward to the Montague Trustees (Mr. J.W. Cundy) alongside Mr. T.E. Swift and Mr. H. Elsmore. Members now began fund raising efforts in earnest until they had collected £120 towards the new chapel. The new building was designed by Mr. R.J. Swift and the total cost was estimated at £600 including furnishing. Mr. J. Ingham of Basford was awarded the contract to construct the chapel in red and blue bricks with stone facings on the site of the old building just a few paces from the road to Hucknall. The memorial stone laying ceremony took place on Saturday 22nd June 1901. It was witnessed by crowds of people and visitors from all parts of the Hucknall Circuit and elsewhere. The Rev. T. Scowby presided and remarked “That he viewed the undertaking with deep feelings of interest. It was some 86 years since a man from Nottingham visited that lovely village of Papplewick and preached the Gospel of Christ. By the bye a cottage was thrown open to them - the cottage of Nancy Cooper - and very prominent leaders were Mr. Piggin, Senr., the father of the present Dr. Ward, and Mr. Pickard of Newstead. Another assiduous labourer was Mr. Swift who was still kindly remembered.”

Proceeding with his talk Rev. Scowby said “The site on which they now stood was loaned for 99 years at a small rental and they were extremely indebted to Mr. Cundy, the Steward who had forgone his fees, which was equal to a gift of £12 10s. and to Mr. F. A. Smith of Papplewick Hall who has subscribed 10 guineas.” Various notables laid corner stones with silver trowels and gave gifts for the cause. Miss Scowby received purses from the following young people: Miss Nellie Goodall, Master Stokes, Miss A. Dabill, Master Percy Dennis, Master Cecil Howitt, Master Owen Jones, Miss Buxton, Miss M. Hallam, Miss N. Brackner, Miss E. Richmond, Miss H. Cox, and Master H. Bettison. They were all thanked for their efforts. Papplewick Grange was the venue, kindly loaned by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hind, for the celebrations which followed. Tea was served in a marquee erected in the grounds and it was fortunate the visitors were under cover since it rained. At the meeting in the evening amongst several speakers was Mr. Goodall who said. “He had known the old place for a considerable time and his father had preached there. He knew much good work had been done in the past and he presaged that the new building would be an even greater blessing than the old.” Details of the financial position were given with lists of donations. A message was read out from friends of Bethesda, Hucknall, who congratulated the brethren at Papplewick on their success and enterprise. Musical selections were played by Mr. H. Radfords string band. At the close a further collection was made towards the project bringing the total amount for the day to £250 adding up to £370 already realised for the new chapel. NOTES:1. On an early Ordnance Survey map the mill was called Wark Mill. 2. Mr. Cundy was trustee to Mr. Montague who was a landowner in Linby. 3. Thomas Swift the Society Steward gave the information for the Religious Census of 1851. Listing in Linby Parish; Walkmill Chapel, Methodist New Connexion, erected before 1800, (sic) 80 free spaces, with only one service a day in the afternoon, 30 people were present in the general congregation and there were 15 Sunday School scholars.

Welfare Benefits, Home Adaptations and Living Aids, Approved Tradespeople, Gardeners, Cleaners, Handyman Services, Support Groups, Social Activities, Shopping Services, Falls Prevention, Counselling, Carers Services …….and much much more.

Volunteers Wanted for Books on Wheels Service Royal Voluntary Service is a national charity with over 70 years experience and 40,000 amazing volunteers of all ages, who support older people to stay independent at home and active in their local community. Our extraordinary history of service to local communities is matched only by our passion to make Britain a great place to grow old. We would like to recruit Volunteers to our Books on Wheels Service in Nottinghamshire. The key task would be to deliver and collect library books, CD’s etc for older/housebound people. We are looking for individuals who can drive and have access to a car. However if you cannot drive, there are still opportunities to source and collate books within the Library, and also to go on rounds with other volunteers. Just a couple of hours every week, fortnight, or month can make a big difference and volunteers can use all the valuable skills and experience they have gained over the years, or develop new ones whilst helping someone in their local area. We provide any training necessary and reimburse expenses so that volunteers are not out of pocket. Christmas Classics Snowy Christmas Log

This easy Christmas cake is based on a recipe from my friend Dena. It is easy and delicious. 40 ginger biscuits 600ml whipping cream 2 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract sherry or orange juice decorations rectangular serving plate

Method

Whip the cream with the icing sugar and vanilla essence until it is just holding it’s shape. Dip each biscuit in either sherry, orange juice or the tipple of your choice! Just a quick dunk - you don’t want them soggy. Then spread with a teaspoon of cream and sandwich together. You want two rows of 20 biscuits. Then cover the whole lot with the rest of the cream. Use a fork to make the bark pattern then refrigerate overnight if possible. Before serving decorate as you please - I used silver balls and glitter sprinkles.

Granny Annies Trifle

small swiss roll - sliced sherry for soaking sponge 150g fresh raspberries 110g tin raspberries in juice 300ml whipping cream 2 tbsp custard powder 1 egg 1pt milk 1 tbsp sugar grated chocolate for decorating glass trifle bowl Method

Place sponge slices on bottom of bowl and pour sherry over. Put fresh raspberries on top along with tinned raspberries and 2 tbsp of juice from tin. To make custard whisk egg with custard powder and sugar in a bowl. Heat milk in a pan til warm but not boiling. Add custard powder mixture to pan and heat, stirring until it thickens. Allow to cool - sprinke top with caster sugar to prevent a skin forming. When cool spoon over fruit. Whip cream and spoon over custard. Decorate with grated chocolate.

Mince Pies

These are quick and easy - you could leave out the lard and use just butter or marg. 225g plain flour pinch of salt 50g lard 50g butter 410g jar mince meat splash of brandy (optional) icing sugar for decorating

Method

Heat oven to 200°C. Grease a tart baking tin. Add flour and salt to the bowl of a food processor. Cut the fat into small chunks and add to the processor. Pulse until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Switch the processor to continuouslly on and a tbsp at a time add about 4tbsp ice cold water until you have a smooth dough. Roll out on a flat, floured surface. Using a 3” cutter make 12 x circles and place in the baking tin. Tip the mince meat into a bowl and mix in the brandy if using. Spoon into the pies. Using a 2.5” cutter make 12 x lids. Brush edges with milk and place on top of pies. Brush tops with milk and bake in oven for 20 mins or until golden brown. Dust with icing sugar. If you have any pastry left, repeat. Makes between 12 and 20 pies depending on how thin you roll your pastry and how big your tin is.

Ella’s Teen Talk:

Handling Parents

...especially at Christmas!

The date was the 26th July. I was completely unprepared. I couldn’t believe it. I was happily spending my day taking a lovely walk and shopping with my mum when she turned to me and said ‘’Oh I better start thinking about Christmas presents!’’ It was July.

Ella Higginbotham aged 15

Don’t get me wrong I love getting in the Christmas spirit; going out and buying lots of presents then coming back home and wrapping them with a warming cup of tea and my favourite Christmas CD playing in the background, but that normally occurs about a week before Christmas. Why do some parents insist on starting the preparations for Christmas before the Halloween costumes are even in the shops? Bless them; they just can’t contain their excitement! Well when I say parents, this usually applies to mums. In fact the dads are quite the opposite, waiting until Christmas Eve to approach the shops with a panicked look as they rummage through the scraps of what the women haven’t already brought. So my advice to you is to leave them both to it and just aim to start your preparations somewhere in between so if your parents do get stressed, it isn’t your problem (but don’t tell them that, that wouldn’t help with their stress!) Another parental bug bare of mine around Christmas is the food shopping. Do they think that there will be food shortages for 9 months after Christmas?! Seriously there are only so many mince pies I can eat before I actually resort to fruit as a substitute. I really do appreciate the effort that goes into Christmas dinner (my favourite meal of the year) and indeed the effort in the whole day in general, but it is ruined when we live off the left overs for weeks afterwards. My last column was about handling money so here is an extra tip for parents: buy half the food that you think you need, for the sake of the children! In my opinion, winter is the best time of year; coming home from school after battling through the cold and snow to be greeted with a hot chocolate Next and pyjamas at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Christmas is just the icing on the cake. issue: Everyone loves the festivities no matter how many times they have been through New it or how hard it was to get there so my Years last tip is this, even if your parents get too overexcited about buying presents or Resolutions... decorating the tree don’t ruin it, it is a a good thing? magical time for them.

Wanted to make that difference! Fosterers and Drivers A Nottinghamshire animal charity which provides rescue, rehoming and ambulance services, urgently needs volunteers.

Additionally, drivers form a critical element of rescuing the neglected or distressed animals. If you have a few daytime hours to spare, own your vehicle and want to be part of an animal’s lifeline to safety - this could be your perfect ‘job’!

Animal Accident Rescue Unit, a literal lifeline for domestic animals and wildlife in need, is in urgent need itself of fosterers and drivers. This small charity, entirely manned by volunteers and donation-funded, undertakes essential life-saving work – but this is only possible through its volunteers and funding.

To discover more on these, plus other equally important volunteering opportunities - such as fundraising - call the Recruitment Officer on 01159563799 or email admin@aaru.org.uk.

Recently, so many vulnerable cats and dogs have needed help (like blind Angel, pictured), that more fosterers are desperately needed to provide temporary homes for them. Fostering is a most rewarding experience: giving a needy animal the chance to live at home – thus making the cat or dog more comfortable – and increasing its adoption prospects.

Meanwhile, help feed and care for the numerous animals in the charity’s care by shopping for them from the comfort of your chair. Simply go to the Amazon website, choose ‘find a wish list’, enter ‘AARU, Nottingham’ - and buy some lovely items which are then delivered directly to the charity’s animals. For all other enquiries on helping, call 01159321555, email admin@aaru.org.uk or visit www. aaru.org.uk.

HUCKNALL TOURISM &

REGENERATION GROUP Our Free Guided Bus Tours for 2013 have been completed. We even managed to pull in an extra one to celebrate Older Peoples Day, on 1st October, when 14 people, mostly residents and carers, from Hall Croft Care Home and Herbert Buzzard Court enjoyed a tour which included Bestwood Winding House, Newstead Abbey, Beauvale Priory, where we enjoyed a delicious FREE lunch, and, finally, St Mary’s Church in Greasley. One lady commented (and we quote) “You’ve gone to a lot of trouble for us and I have had a lovely day”. Another lady sent us a floral Thank You card thanking us for making it such a special day for everyone. It is rewarding to receive people’s comments and makes all our efforts worthwhile. This event was sponsored by the Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service. We are continuing to support all the events occurring in and around Hucknall. These include a Christmas Fair, on 16th November, at St John’s Church on Nottingham Road, St Mary Magdalene’s Christmas Fair. On Sunday, 1st December, we will be taking part in the Christmas Fair at Beauvale Priory. This will run from 10.00am through to 4.00pm. We will also be having a Christmas Tree in St Mary Magdalene’s Church for the Christmas Tree Festival which runs from Wednesday evening 4th December, through to Saturday lunchtime, 7th December. Don’t forget the Christmas Carnival which takes place from about 5.00pm on Wednesday, 4th December all around the town. We are also planning a Christmas Shop Window Competition. More news of that later. There may be more events happening where we will also be visible but we are still waiting for news of these. It is important, therefore, that everyone keeps in touch with us through the Information Point in Hucknall Library, our website www.hucknalltrg.btck.co.uk, our facebook page /HucknallTRG, and on twitter @HucknallTourism. May we take this opportunity of wishing all our members, supporters, friends and residents a Very Happy and Joyful Christmas.

HITTING THE DECK WITH A CERAMIC TILE WOOD LOOK-ALIKE

Ceramic tile wood-lookalike garden decking is a fabulous new product which is about to revolutionise the everpopular garden deck. Rapid advances in ceramic tile technology have produced an astonishingly accurate reproduction of real wood decking. It is easy to lay and looks just like the real thing – but this decking will stand up to everything the weather and heavy garden use can throw at it – without losing any of its attractive finish.

Garden decking is a fashionable feature of modern gardens – but traditional wooden decking demands almost constant attention to keep it in peak condition. The ceramic tile alternative will look just as good as it did the day you laid it – even after several years of constant use. It’s one of the latest ceramic tile products to have arrived at Nottingham-based East Midlands Ceramics, the region’s

leading ceramic tile supplier. EMC Tiles managing director, Barry Slawson said: “These new wood look-alike decking tiles from the Spanish manufacturer Cinca, are perfect for all applications where you may want to use wooden decking. But the advantages are numerous. They will never rot, unlike timber they don’t need regular weatherproofing treatment to keep them in peak condition.”

The introduction of ceramic tile decking is a highly significant breakthrough that will be welcomed by gardeners and home owners who may have been reluctant to invest in a fashionable deck – simply because of the hassles involved in their upkeep. Now they can have the best of both worlds – great looking decking they don’t have to worry about.”

from Sergeant Nick Butler..... It isn’t Christmas in our house until my children have been to see a pantomime… but oh yes it is. We’ve bought our tickets for this year so it must mean the festive season is a mere mince pie away and that also signals my last column of 2013 (save your booing for the theatre). Now we approach winter and, with more people out enjoying themselves, darker nights and bad weather, the festive season marks one of the busiest times of year for us. I don’t want to come across as an Ebenezer Scrooge or dampen anyone’s festive spirit but I’d like to talk about violent crime. Violent crime can have an impact on us all. Victims, families, and communities all feel the consequences when someone they know or care about gets hurt. Those who read or hear about strangers being assaulted will be affected, and this can change the way they live their lives. In October we launched a forcewide campaign on violent crime and we’ve been targeting different areas within this including alcohol abuse and antisocial behaviour, robbery and hate crime. We did a lot of work around alcohol abuse in September and I’m sure many of you will have seen some of the operations we led in Arnold highlighting the realities of dealing with drunkenness, alcohol-related incidents, and the impact they have on the police service. You’ve no doubt seen that we’ve since extended our focus to cover domestic abuse, robbery and hate crime, which sadly can rise of at this time of year.

We have seen evidence of the lifechanging impact violence can have – through serious injury, physical, emotional and mental trauma or even death. Acts of violence do change people’s lives. Our action has and will continue to focus on preventing these sorts of crime from taking place through; early intervention work, targeting known offenders, and educating people including our own colleagues and partners on these issues. As we come to the end of 2013 I’d also like to say a big thank you all of our community volunteers. Perhaps you are in a neighbourhood watch group, you work as a street pastor, you’ve give up your time to help with an appeal or campaign or your volunteer your services in another way, whatever input you’ve had with us please know it has been enormously helpful. Can I ask for your continued help through this festive season and into the New Year? Please be on the look out for anything unusual or suspicious. If it doesn’t look right, then it probably isn’t! Give us a call and let us know straight away. Please keep your doors locked and lights on when you are out. I know this might sound wasteful of electricity, but if you use low energy bulbs, the real impact is greatly reduced. Use timer switches where possible to have lamps coming on and going off at times when you are out Remember, if you see something suspicious, ring us and say what is happening. Don’t leave it until the next day – we won’t be able to find them by then. We want to ensure Christmas and 2014 is a happy and peaceful one for all of us.
