I really like the idea of a weekly veg box delivery, so when Red Earth Organics offered me a box I jumped at the chance. I have to say I was really impressed with the quality, variety and freshness of the produce. A box like the one pictured is ÂŁ11. I think this is great value. These recipes are all from the goodies I received in the box. Red Earth Organics can be reached on 07794 467545.

Six Months On... It’s been almost six months since the Green Dragon on Watnall Road had it’s major refurbishment and as the landmark pub looks ahead to the next six months we look at how important the face-lift was to the business and to the community. Since the introduction of a fully fitted kitchen, and new menu packed full of daily deals, the pub has seen it’s target audience drastically evolve, meaning the pub now attracts; families, groups of women and young couples, all without putting off the loyal fanbase. The main menu is served every lunchtime and every evening, with extended hours and Saturday and Sunday, the daily deals include Beer & Burger for £5.99 and 2 Sunday Roasts for £11.00. The Main Menu is accompanied by a superb Kids Menu, which includes a free Fruit Shoot activity pack with every meal. During the Euro 2012 and London 2012 Olympics the pub offered a great Beer & Burger deal for only £5.49 during all of the games.

Six Quality Cask Ales

As well as a fantastic food offer, the pub strives for recognition of their cask ale. A permanent offering of six cask ales means they are a favourite of the real ale connoisseur and offer the best choice of cask ale in Hucknall, with a whopping six different ales. National favourites like Old Speckled Hen

6

and London Pride sit alongside more quirky local beers such as Blue Monkey, Castle Rock and Nottingham Brewery. The beers are always in fine form and they are looked after by longtime Licensee Carol Hensen “I’ve always loved cask ale and the locals were so pleased that we were going to get another pump with the refurbishment” says Carol “We had five ales on before but now with six we really have something to shout about!” Looking forward, the pub has the new season of the Premier League to show on three plasma screens, pleasing the Saturday afternoon crowds. Plans are afoot for parties at both Hallowe’en and Christmas not to mention the anniversary of the relaunch in March. The Pub People Company, who own and operate the business continue their run of major facelifts with The Bridge in Sandiacre which reopened lateAugust and are already looking ahead at major developments in Langley Mill and Chesterfield.. Watch this space. For more info on the Green Dragon or Pub People, you can become a fan of both their official Facebook pages and join in on the conversation simply search for either Green Dragon Hucknall or Pub People Company.

Fans Of Five A Day Flock To Local Company A new Nottingham(shire) based vegetable box company has signed up over 200 customers in the last eight weeks, following a hugely successful pilot scheme. The business is now preparing for a full launch across the NG4-6 and NG816 postcode areas on 3rd September 2012, expanding its services even further at the start of next year. The aptly named Parsnips and Pears sources its produce from local farmers and growers which means that the offer is totally seasonal but without the premium price tag associated with organic vegetable box products. Sara Barlow is the force behind this new business; “This is honest to goodness, great quality, great tasting seasonal produce delivered directly to the door .... and that common sense offer has really resonated with our customers. “Some miss the demise of their high street greengrocer and are delighted to find a service that fills the gap. Others have families to feed with healthy appetites and are savvy enough to know that you don’t have to pay a hefty price for good quality if you know where to look. “Why rely on supermarket produce that’s been half way around the world and back, when something can be picked from a nearby field and on your fork soon afterwards?” The Parsnips and Pears vegetable boxes are already available in different sizes, from small to medium, large to extra large and special

occasion. Prices start at £7.99 including delivery and all are very generously packed full to bursting with nutritious, seasonal items. Sara added: “Eating seasonally makes for a far more varied diet and allows us to offer fair and reasonable prices. This is not produce that has been imported or freighted from one end of the country to the other and so that’s a cost we simply don’t have to bear. “We can pay our suppliers a fair price for their produce and still deliver it at a great price to our customers – which certainly stacks up economically when compared to an equivalent supermarket shop.” The new Parsnips and Pears website www. parsnipsandpears.co.uk will also go live on launch date and will be a source of seasonal information, recipes, competitions and news. Vegetable boxes can be ordered online through the website or by calling 0115 822 8622.

A Lifeline for Animals in Need

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. The Lazy Gardener.... is turfed out!!

Whether your lawn is the size of a postage stamp or a football pitch, to keep it looking green and gorgeous requires some care and attention. In our house the most the lawn ever gets is a mow every few days during the spring and summer...and it does show.

Compaction and sub-surface thatch are two of the main problems on lawns by restricting water, air and nutrients getting through. Hollow-tine aeration is the most effective way of reducing these problems by removing thousands of cores out of the lawn, allowing the roots to spread enabling them to receive nutrients. Aeration stimulates and encourages root growth and can be done with a garden fork or a special mechanical aerator. Re seed Any worn/bare patches caused by the summer wear can be re-seeded now.

I have since learnt that grass never stops growing it just slows down and we should really keep mowing at least monthly through Autumn and Winter subject to dry conditions.

Leaves Prevent accumulation of fallen leaves by removing then from the lawn weekly otherwise the grass will struggle to survive and diseases may establish themselves.

For some more tips on improving the state of my lawn I contacted our good friends at Green Thumb and Mark Sutton has kindly given me some great tips which I am delighted to share with you.... Autumn is a very important time of the year for lawn maintenance. Scarification This is an essential part of lawn maintenance. We scarify to remove matted growth and thatch both of which are detrimental to a lawn, thinning out the thatch improves the plants growing conditions and it also reduces one of the causes of moss. It can be done with a specialist hand tool or a machine. Aeration Put simply aeration is making holes in the lawn to let carbon dioxide out of the soil and allow oxygen in.

....Blimey, thanks for all those tips Mark. I had no idea there was so much involved. For those of us with very little time (or inclination!) companies like Green Thumb offer a great lawn care service and it really doesn’t cost the earth. For more information on lawn care or to get Mark and his team round to help just give them a call on 0116 243 4606. Š Ali Wale

Choose your personal care assistant with confidence People in Nottinghamshire who need social care and support are being urged to use a directory of reliable paid workers. Support With Confidence, which has been set up by Nottinghamshire County Council, is a web-based directory of potential employees who can help older and disabled people with things like: • getting them out of bed, washed and dressed • taking them out for trips e.g. the pub or theatre • walking people’s dogs • helping out with shopping, housework or the garden. Everyone on the directory has received training and has been checked by the County Council. People who receive a personal budget* for their social care can then select who they want from the directory to provide a particular service. They will then interview that person and, if they are happy, offer them the job. Councillor Kevin Rostance, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “More and more people are now receiving personal budgets, which means they can manage their own social care. This is fantastic and it gives people real choice and control over which

services they have and who helps them. “Support With Confidence gives people the reassurance that these carers are reliable, so we would urge anyone who is thinking of hiring a personal assistant to use this scheme.”

To find out more about Support With Confidence and to use the directory phone 08449 80 80 80 or visit: w w w. n o t t i n g h a m s h i r e . g o v. u k / supportwithconfidence *Personal budgets are given to people who are eligible for long term social care support by the County Council. They have an assessment with a social care worker, where they decide how they wish to spend their money to best meet their needs.

Hollygirt School to take boys aged 3 - 7 from September Hollygirt School is pleased to announce that it is welcoming applications for boys aged 3-7 to start from September onwards. It is not the first time that the school has taught boys; there were little boys here during the 1980s. For parents with both boys and girls, there are very few independent co-educational schools with a similar family-feel to Hollygirt and we are aware that for parents of young children, having to do multiple school drop-offs is challenging. Taking boys at a young age will not detract away from Hollygirt’s ethos and there are no plans to extend the age range for boys. Hollygirt helps children develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy. All junior children spend a day with us to find

out if they will be happy in our environment. We take children of all abilities and each is assessed before they join, so that their educational needs can be met, wherever they are in terms of their ability. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. In our small school everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best from each child. Your child can join Hollygirt at any age, from 3 up to the start of Year 10, subject to a place being available. Entry can be at any time, not just the start of a school year or term. Most new pupils join without knowing other children, but soon make friends in the warm and homely atmosphere. Our quality of care was rated as outstanding in the school’s last inspection.

Our next Open Morning is on Saturday 29th September at 9.30am. All are welcome. If you can’t make it, just call us to come in for a chat and a look around. We look forward to seeing you. Our Senior School Entrance Assessment for Year 7 entry in Sept 2013 is on Tuesday 27th November.

‘Facilities were basic, entertainment was low-key and all non-essential belongings were left at home, so this was a real contrast to our usual jamboreestyle camps,’ said County Commissioner Kate Royse. ‘Whilst the mood was far from sombre, the evening encouraged the girls to think about the problems of homelessness and I think everyone gained a better understanding of how people especially teenagers and young people - manage without a place to call home.’ Night in a Box was the culmination of ‘People Like Me’, a training and information programme developed by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire with local charity Framework. Members of the Framework team – including mascot Roofus joined the girls for the evening, which also marked the final stage in Framework’s ‘Ten Days of Action 2012’. Girls at the event from 4th Hucknall Guides included Harriet (14) and Joanna (15) pictured above, who spent much of the preceding few days building their home out of boxes. The collaboration with Framework is the result of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s drive to develop ways of working within the wider community. Enquiries from other organisations or individuals are welcome: contact Kate Royse at county headquarters on 0115 987 7220, e-mail secretary@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

A SAD STORY: Why Hicks Memorial School was named The Rev. Henry Champernowne Hicks was first mentioned in a newspaper report on 6th March 1877. He had been appointed curate in charge of the new mission church of St. John the Evangelist, on Butlers Hill, Hucknall Torkard. Working hard, he built up the congregation, took care of pastoral duties and watched over the construction of the new church. Just a few of the things he was involved with are noted here. There was an excursion to visit Cresswell Crags where “after viewing the beautiful natural scenery the party returned by an evening train”. For the St. John’s branch of the Church Union “a most agreeable entertainment was given at the Reading Room on Whyburn Street. Mr. W. Bostock opened with a violin solo; Dr. Coates sang, a flute and harmonium duet was performed by Mr. Longland, R.E. and A.H. Bonser; a performance of ‘The Three Chafers’ by the Rev. H.C. Hicks, Dr. Coates and Mr. Cooke received an encore and Mr. C. Franks with his Lancashire sketch entitled ‘A neet in a Grave’ occasioned much laughter”. Refreshments and a debate on Trade Unionism concluded the evening. On Wednesday in Christmas week 1877 the Rev. Hicks presented prizes of bibles, story books and certificates to the children of St. John’s church Sunday school. Carols were sung by the choir and each child was presented with a bun at the close. A good natured baker had inserted threepenny pieces in some of them “much to the amusement of the children”. The following day the St. John’s Workers Association held a tea meeting in the school-room on Whyburn Street. After tea the Rev. H.C. Hicks and Dr. Coates put on an entertainment. By the summer of 1878 it was realised that he was suffering from overwork and ordered to take a holiday on medical grounds. He went to visit his brother John Hicks who worked as agent for Messrs. Woods and Co’s Bank at Alnwick, Northumberland. Shields Gazette and Shipping Telegraph of Wednesday July 17th reports: “A sad case of drowning which has cast a deep gloom over the little sea side village of Alnmouth occurred yesterday afternoon. The two gentlemen (Henry and John) came down from Alnwick on the 5.10pm train to Alnmouth for the purpose of bathing. They immediately took out a boat and pulled out into the sea in front of the sands. Having anchored the boat, they both undressed and the Rev. Hicks

plunged into the sea. Scarcely had he done so when his brother realised he was struggling below the water and hastily jumped in to his assistance. A fishing boat was in the vicinity and the fishermen attracted by the calls of Mr. Hicks for help hastily pulled forward. The drowning man was hastily reached by a grappling hook and brought back into the boat. Animation was completely departed but it was hoped life was not extinct. The body was taken with all speed to the coastguard station and medical assistance telegraphed for from Alnwick there being no medical man in the village”. The Rev. Henry C. Hicks was buried in the Alnwick cemetery on Thursday July 18th 1878. Back in Hucknall expressions of regret were being made by all sections of the community when they heard the sad news and St. John’s church was draped in black. A meeting of parishioners was held in the National School in August and it was unanimously resolved to erect a memorial to him in the shape of a block of buildings for Sunday school purposes. A site between the Board Schools and St. John’s church was chosen; Mr. Fred Gration was entrusted with the plans and a subscription list was opened. People readily responded to the appeal and the building work was soon begun.

Hicks Memorial Schools (right) 1962 Hicks Memorial School was built in the Gothic style with rough Bulwell stone and facings of Ancaster stone. It was hoped to accommodate about 200 children. The estimated cost was expected to be about £400 and the contractors were Messrs. Houldsworth and Green. The stone laying service was held in November 1878. The building, as a church hall, is still providing an extremely useful service for the community of Butlers Hill today. © Maureen Newton

On Friday 19 October 10 am - 12 noon

Additional rehearsals are helping to step up the preparation for the Bestwood Male Voice Choir’s Diamond Jubilee Concert on 23 September 2012 at the Albert Hall Nottingham. Following on from a wonderful exchange visit in May to Rotenburg in Germany, singing the National Anthem on BBC’s Radio 2 Royal Jubilee ”We are Sixty” programme on 3 June and singing in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during the Queen’s visit on 13 June, the choir is now rehearsing hard to fine tune their repertoire for the Diamond Jubilee Concert. Special guests for the concert include BeVox, the truly inspirational and dynamic people’s choir, with over 100 members and David Butterworth on the fabulous Binns Organ. The concert programme will climax with a joint item with Bestwood MVC, BeVox and the Binns Organ, which is guaranteed to ‘lift the roof’!

one of the archivists from Nottinghamshire Archives will be at Hucknall library hosting a free drop-in session. For more info contact Hucknall Library: hucknall.library@nottscc.gov.uk 0115 9632035 or Nottinghamshire Archives: archives@ nottscc.gov.uk or 0115 950 4524

Diamond Celebrations

There was great excitement when members of the Nottinghamshire branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild were asked to exhibit their textile art at Vernon Park for the Royal visit. Like the Queen, the Nottinghamshire Branch of the Guild is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary this year. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to see the display and Eileen Tilley presented the Duchess with a textile posy trimmed with lace and a lace butterfly. Many people at the event enjoyed seeing the varied work of the group on display. Some members are new to embroidery; others have been members of the Guild for over 25 years. The group meets monthly in the city centre and there is usually a speaker. The topics are very varied and it is fascinating to see the work of others and hear of what inspired them. This year they look forward to talks about using recycled materials, lace and the recreation of Lady Peacocks dress. Some of the members go to Sherwood Community centre for weekly evening classes and/or a monthly workshop. The Embroiderers’ Guild is a registered charity. There are many other activities and events in the region that members can enjoy. This friendly group meet at the Nottingham Mechanics, North Sherwood Street on the first Tuesday of the month at 1-30pm. If you have a love of and an interest in textiles why not come along? Visitors are very welcome. For more information contact - Judith Hanley: Tel - 0115 9531695 Email - tedjudyhanley@ntlworld.com Web site http://www.emreg.org.uk/branches/ nottinghamshire
