from Inspector Nick Butler.....

Burglary in the Hucknall and Ashfield areas has been a concern to me in recent weeks. The good news is that we’ve made some significant arrests in this area but I don’t want any of you to become a victim. The warm weather is a friend to the opportunistic thief who might chance his/her luck at trying an unlocked front door, or using an open window to snatch whatever goodies are on offer, unbeknown to home owners who are sat in the back garden. I hate to say it but the nights are drawing in and before we know it winter will be on the way. Just because your windows are closed and you’re turning the central heating back on please don’t get complacent. Take time to make sure your doors and windows are locked and consider installing security lights around your home. The best way to ensure our communities are pleasant places to live is by keeping vigilant.

Keep an eye out for unusual or suspicious activity in your street. Who is walking down your road? Who is visiting your neighbour? Recently we celebrated Office of National Statistics figures which showed that in Nottinghamshire between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2013 there were 9,324 fewer victims of crime, a fall of 12 per cent on the previous year. Over the last decade crime has fallen by more than 90,000 offences. Police Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping said that Nottinghamshire Police is one of the fastest improving forces in the country and Deputy Chief Constable Sue Fish has agreed that this year’s reduction in crime is to be a further 10 per cent. This is good news for all of us and I’m also pleased to add that Ashfield South has one of the highest public satisfaction rates in the county. I want to build on this success and make sure we all work together to make our community a safe and pleasant place to live. For more information call 101 or sign up for advice and crime alerts at: www.nottinghamshirealert.co.uk. If a crime is in progress call 999.

Linby village is celebrating success after beating 35 villages to the title of “Best Kept Village”. Linby won the Category D award for villages with a population under 300. The competition, run by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CRPE) and sponsored by Wilkinson, judges villages on its looks, cleanliness, and overall community spirit. The village will receive a cheque for £125 but more importantly the title of Best Kept Village along with a framed certificate and a sign that will be presented to the village at a special ceremony on 13 November. Some of the comments by the judges included that the village was all around excellent, that the centre of the village is very clean and tidy and they also noticed that there was no litter in the streams. Councillor Patricia Andrews, who represents the Linby area said;“We are delighted to win this prestigious award and I would like to thank all of the residents of the local community, especially the members of Linby Parish Council for all their efforts putting the submission together and we are thoroughly looking forward to the presentation on 13 November, it will be a very proud moment for the village.”

HUCKNALL TOURISM &

REGENERATION GROUP The Hucknall International Byron Festival has just finished. This has possibly been one of the best ever festivals. On Saturday 29th June, Hucknall Market Place was alive with motor scooters and VW camper vans as they met there in preparation for their drive to Newstead Abbey, where there were many events being held during the whole day. Plans are already being made for next year`s event. Our FREE guided bus tours are still going very well. In fact, this year an extra tour was run at the request of a group from Nottingham Circle. This tour went down very well and has helped us to increase the popularity of Hucknall further afield and to a new audience some of whom did not believe that there was so much to offer in our area. One lady said; “it feels like I have been on holiday”. Comments like this make all the effort very worthwhile. We are continuing our support for the churches of St Mary Magdalene with their restoration fund and St John`s at Butlers Hill with their asbestos problems, doing what we can to help. Hucknall Christmas tree festival will again take place alongside the Christmas Carnival, on Wednesday, 4th December. Hopefully we may get more trees this year and plans have already begun. For further information on everything happening in Hucknall, please keep an eye on our website: www.hucknalltrg.btck.co.uk, and also our facebook page /HucknallTRG, and twitter @HucknallTourism

Bestwood Hosts a Big Lunch w w w. h a y d n i n t e r i o r s . c o . u k

On Sunday 2nd June Bestwood Country Park hosted the ‘Big Lunch’ – part of the national ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign. The Big Lunch and its ‘Feed a Thousand’ challenge was part of this year’s road show led by Nottinghamshire County Council and their waste contractors Veolia Environmental Services. The aim of the challenge was to feed a thousand people with the average amount of food a family waste in one year - £680. As part of the wider event, and to celebrate the start of National Volunteers Week, Gedling CVS also hosted its ‘Volunteers Picnic’, where local voluntary groups showcased the valuable work they do. The event was a roaring success with over 1000 lunches being served whilst coffee and cake was provided by volunteers from Friends of Bestwood Country Park and Bestwood Village WI. The Winding Engine House volunteers played host to hundreds of people, offering free guided tours around this Heritage Lottery-funded local treasure. The event brought many new visitors – many of whom have since returned with family and friends. Local brass band The Black Diamonds & close-up magician Peter Presto entertained hundreds in the glorious sunshine. You can visit the Winding Engine House and Dynamo House café on Saturdays from 10am until noon. For more information, visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/bestwoodcp or phone 0115 976 2422

HUCKNALL’S THEATRE ROYAL by Maureen Newton It all began on 15th February 1900 when Hucknall Urban District Council received a plan from Thomas Woodhouse. It concerned building a theatre on Annesley Road with the owner listed as Sydney Spenser. From the Rushcliffe Advertiser comes a report to say the first stationary theatre in Hucknall is to be built of timber on the open space facing Carlingford Road. An application was made to Shire Hall for a licence for plays and to sell beer but only the licence for plays was granted on condition that no intoxicants were sold and the county surveyors report of the building was favourable.

There is a spacious scene dock and the scenes will be worked from the flies; the most up to date system. Artistes are accommodated in 8 dressing rooms or other convenient rooms ready for the performance. Seating arrangements have been worked out carefully. 40 front seats are tip up stalls upholstered in plush velvet with arm and back rests; 60 pit stalls are tip up seats in walnut; the pit contains 270 seats on a slight incline enabling the audience to watch without undue neck craning; lastly there are 420 seats in the gallery. Underneath the gallery was a restaurant, the managers office and four places of convenience for ladies and gentlemen.” In case of emergency the exit doors allowed 800 people to leave in two minutes. Fire buckets and a hydrant had been provided as a routine measure and the building was well ventilated and lit.

Everything was ready for the Grand Opening Night on April 29th 1901. Several councillors were invited by Sydney Spenser the proprietor and general manager to see the burlesque pantomime Robin Hood performed by Mr. Horace Barry’s company. Main characters were Miss Cissie Kingsley (Robin Hood), Miss Ethel Gilchrist (Maid Marian), Harry Carmen (Baron Badlot) and Tom Rae (Max Boxer). “Laughter and applause were constant in a play full of ludicrous situations and the costumes were bang up to date.” The stage arrangements worked wonderfully well considering the newness of the structure. “There was an orchestra of Five Hucknall musicians who seemed thoroughly at home and everybody from stall to gallery had a good view of the stage.” Mr. Spenser himself came before the curtain during the interval and asked if the audience liked the theatre. There was a loud chorus of “Yes”. He read messages of congratulations, one of them from Sir Henry Irving which read “Heartily wish you all success of all kinds, at all times, for yourself and for your theatre”. People thought it was most appropriate to commence with a piece about Sherwood Forest and there was a full house for opening night. The external appearance of the building was considered to be ugly as it was made of corrugated iron but once inside the spectators were agreeably surprised at the layout. “The stage measures 11yards by 8yards. Down below the footlights the musicians enter the orchestra from below the stage.

Mr. Spenser said that he and his wife had come to make Hucknall their home and thanked the population for support during the first dramatic season. Various friends and admirers arranged a performance of local artists for Mr. Spenser’s benefit in December 1901. Councillor T. Metcalf opened a show of music with some comedy. The artists were: St John’s Glee Singers – namely A. Kingstone, H.G.M. Henderson, W. Baxter, Henry Gandy, Ruby Bramley and the Temperance Silver Band. The theatre was still going strong in January 1903 when the show was the musical comedy “The Rajah of Ranjaupore” which had played at Mansfield the week before. But - in November 1904 Mr Spenser made a shock pronouncement from the stage that the theatre would close the following week. The theatre was dismantled and moved by goods train to Glossop. So - for 3 ½ years Hucknall had a Theatre Royal. Despite the external appearance it must have provided a touch of glamour for local people and an occasional dash of magical escapism.

Sweet treatS

Banoffi Pie

Kieran’s Key Lime Pie

300g ginger biscuits 70g butter 397g tin condensed milk or caramel 3 bananas 300ml whipping cream chocolate for decoration 20cm spring based cake tin Method

This recipe is adapted from a BBC Food recipe. 375g gluten free digestive biscuiits 150g butter 8 large limes (zest & juice) 1 pint double cream 397g tin condensed milk to decorate (optional) 85g creme fraiche If using condensed milk - place tin in a 1 tsp lime zest large pan of boiling water - making sure the tin is completely covered. Boil the tin for 2 to 3 hours. Keep checking and topping up with boiling water. This is very important. If the tin isn’t covered it could explode! If this is too much for you just use a tin of caramel. Grease the tin. I line with greaseproof paper to make it easier to get the pudding out. Crush the ginger biscuits (I use a food processor) to fine crumbs. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add the biscuit crumbs and mix well. Line the bottom of the tin with the mixture and press up the sides. Use a flat bottomed jar to press the mixture firmly then place in fridge to set for a couple of hours. Slice the bananas and place on the biscuit base. Pour over the caramel (if using boiled condensed milk be very careful when opening the tin). Whip the cream and when cool cover the top with cream. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.

Method

Crush the biscuits either in a food processor or in a bag with a rolling pin. Melt the butter in a pan and stir in the crushed biscuits. The mixture can be split between 2 x 18cm tins or 1 x 23cm tin. Press mixture into tins & chill in the fridge. Put lime juice, condensed milk & cream in a bowl and whisk for 1-2 mins. Add lime zest to mixture (save a tsp for decoration) and stir in. Pour mixture onto biscuit bases and chill for 2 hours or overnight. Decorate with crème fraiche and lime zest

Strawberry Tart

This recipe is adapted from one by Jocelyn Dimbleby in a Sainsbury’s cook book called Sweet Dreams.

175g plain flour 60g caster sugar 100g butter 300ml creme fraiche 350g strawberries 3 tbsp strawberry jam finely grated rind & juice of 1 orange (3 tbsp) Method

Sift flour & sugar into a bowl. Melt butter in a pan along with the orange rind and 2tbsp juice. Once melted add to bowl and mix well until a smooth dough is formed. Press mixture into a 24cm flan tin. Using hands press over the bottom & up the sides then chill in fridge for 30 mins. Heat over to 200°C. Bake pastry blind for 20 mins until edges are pale golden colour. Take out oven and pour in creme fraiche then return to oven for 10 mins. Once tart is cold decorate with strawbs. Gently heat the strawberry jam with a tbsp of orange juice and spoon over the top to glaze. Chill until ready to serve.

Ella’s Teen Talk:

Handling Money

We all know there’s nothing worse than making plans with friends and being forced to cancel them because our pockets are empty. I’m personally fed up of hearing my parents tell me that “money doesn’t Ella Higginbotham aged 15 grow on trees” (what a silly saying, it’s a bit obvious isn’t it!) when the majority of us under 16s can’t get jobs, but we really don’t want to miss out on a social life: we can’t win! When our purses are sparse there are just a few little things we can do to make sure we aren’t completely broke: 1) Get a Terramundi money pot- its saves money and looks pretty, genius! It’s different because what you put in you can’t get out until it’s full up and ready to be smashed. So you know that random change lying in your jean pocket or in the bottom of your bag? just chuck it into the terramundi and before you know it it’s time to smash it and you have a whole load of cash. Plus you get the added bonus of getting the hammer and whacking it open; it’s a lot of fun or can act as an excellent stress release which is perfect for all our teenage traumas! 2) Don’t buy food and drink-starve! No but seriously if you’re going for a day out in town or in the park don’t waste money on buying food, just take it with you. Wrap up a sandwich at home because it’s just as yummy and completely free! 3) Do little jobs- you’ve got to break the teen catchphrase of “can’t be bothered” (however heart-breaking it may be) and don’t be lazy, it only takes ten minutes to wash some pots or iron a few pairs of jeans. Ask your parents for just 50p every now and then by helping around the house and it will all add up. Oh and don’t forget the puppy dog eyes if you’re really desperate. 4) Compare where you shop- don’t buy the first thing you see. You can probably get the same thing elsewhere for a much better price. Be patient and window shop for a bit until you find the ideal, cheap purchase. 5) Babysit- it’s a doddle (Hopefully!) You get paid to spend your evening watching TV whilst the kids are in bed, plus everyone tells you to help yourself so that means free food! You can’t go wrong! You or your parents must know families with young kids so ask around and do a good job of it; that way word gets around and you will eventually have loads of Next business. It’s the little things that you can do to make sure you’ve always got some money spare to do the things that you want to do. Keep it sensible and realistic and you should never be searching for scraps of money around your bedroom again because, trust me, that’s a lost battle.

Can you help? Do you have a free hour or two once a month?

Action on Hearing Loss (previously the RNID) has set up free hearing aid drop-ins around Nottinghamshire. It takes time to adapt to using hearing aids – getting used to new sounds as well as managing the hearing aids themselves and we are looking for people to help us run free drop-in clinics to support hard of hearing people in the local community. You can find us at: Papplewick and Linby Village Hall Last Monday of the month 10am-12pm We are looking for people who can spare a couple of hours each month to support the local community officer and help with any of the following jobs: • Re-tubing hearing aids and battery replacement • Greeting people using the service • Completing paper work • Giving advice and support to people to make the most of their hearing aids We will give you full training, expenses and all the support you need. One current volunteer says ‘It’s very satisfying to know that the two hours I give the charity each month benefits so many people.’ If you are interested or would like more information please contact: gayle.wand@hearingloss.org.uk heartohelp.nottingham@hearingloss.org.uk
