Kitten Food Appeal
A local animal charity that provides a lifeline to abandoned domestic animals and wildlife, is urgently appealing for food donations to feed a recent intake of 21 kittens. Animal Accident Rescue Unit came to the rescue of the kittens from various parts of Nottinghamshire; some had been abandoned, some just born to young mothers – all needed vet checks, medication and food – like Oleg (pictured), modelling in an empty cat food box! As Chris Bull, pet food co-ordinator for the charity, explains: ‘We’ve a lot of tiny mouths to feed and really would appreciate donations of kitten food. Any brand is fine, as long as it’s kitten, not adult, food. The first year of a cat’s life has periods of significant growth. The food they eat must contain the correct levels of nutrition to help them become strong.’
in its foster care, so many more kittens are expected over the coming months. Readers can help by donating kitten food. All you have to do is contact Chris on 07949 780918 or email admin@animalaccident.org.uk. Your help would be very much appreciated. The charity’s main telephone number is 0115 9321555, and website is www.animalaccident.org.uk
Approx 2000 healthy animals are put to sleep every week in the UK Low cost speying & neutering schemes for pets available in the Nottingham area Helen@preventunwantedpets.co.uk reg charity: 702569
In addition, the charity has several pregnant cats

d Spectre: James Bon Shaken... le t it L a I’m After the pretty much perfect Skyfall, I was more than pumped for the next Bond film, especially as the team who made Skyfall were sticking around for it. And while the trailers for Spectre didn’t really seem to be hinting at the heights that Skyfall had accomplished I still had full faith in returning director, Sam Mendes, and team to deliver another sensational Bond. Sadly the small nagging feeling in the back of my mind turned out to be correct and not only was this a disappointing follow up to Skyfall but a mis-shaped end to Craig’s tenure as Bond. The story of Spectre sees Bond attempt to hunt down and eradicate the shadowy force known as Spectre. A a force that seems to be the horrifying puppet master to many of not only the world’s misfortunes but many of Bond’s own personal tragedies too. While that synopsis of the story makes this film sound like an emotionally charged conclusion to Craig’s Bond saga, surprisingly, emotional impact is one of the things sorely missing from this film. One main reason for this is the romance. While I am completely fine with its inclusion, its execution was flimsy at best. Another reason is the completely disappointing villain. Spoken of in only scared whispers for the majority of the film, not only does Waltz’s character, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, enter way too late into the game, but his connection to Bond is never really explored in any satisfying or interesting way. Having said that, Daniel Craig delivers stellar work here, maintaining the iconic persona of Bond in almost every action he does in this film. From jumping from a collapsing building, seducing a target for vital information, or effortlessly gunning down incoming enemy soldiers, every movement and look just oozed cool. However, even with such a smooth character at its disposal, the building collapsing set pieces never really seemed to grab me or make my heart race like the tube sequence in Skyfall did. This may have been, in big part, due to the shoddy CGI on offer in Spectre. Even with bad CGI and lacklustre set pieces one thing that saved and heightened much of this films moment to moment enjoyment was the fantastic cinematography on show here. Many of the shots were angled beautifully as Bond could be seen heroically standing over a jaw dropping vista as its setting sun tinged the whole image an intoxicating yellow hue.
Even in a considerably disappointing car chase, the way the speeding cars were shown to move and drift, with their amazing looking chassis, through the picturesque streets of Rome, made the set piece if not on-the-edge-of-your-seat exciting then definitely a joy to watch. Overall this film was more of a let-down than a success. With a disappointing villain, not-quite-there emotional core, lacklustre set pieces and horribly executed romance this seems like an unfitting end for Craig’s Bond. However the experience is uplifted through some amazing acting, with the ever smooth Bond shining in every aspect of his adventures; a massive positive that can be said of all the cast members, with some also bringing a fresh and welcome dose of comedy to proceedings. On behalf of Hucknall Sports YCFC a very warm welcome to everyone reading this article. Hucknall Sports was founded in July 1977 at a Queens silver jubilee street party on Glendon Drive, Hucknall consisting of just one team, we are now in our 38th year and are one of the premier Youth Football organisations in the county affiliated to Nottinghamshire FA. Not many youth clubs can better this remarkable achievement and today the club has 26 teams running junior soccer teams from Under 7’s through to under 18’s, together with a very successful Soccer School for the under 6’s and also a veterans team. In total we have over 300 members which is quite remarkable.
Some of the highlights for the club... In 2005 the club achieved the prestigious FA Charter Development Club Standard (one of a very few in the County at that time) where we meet the strict criteria set out by the FA in terms of how we run the club and coach the players. Over the past 10 years the club has continually passed an annual audit by the FA to ensure the high standards that we set ourselves are maintained Over the past 38 years Hucknall Sports has had considerable success on the field of play winning numerous trophies in the Young Elizebethan League, Notts Youth League & Mansfield Chad league. The biggest achievement has to be the club participating in a number of County shield finals (the ultimate goal for any individual team) over the past 7 consecutive years at various age groups winning 5 of these finals. No other club in Hucknall or arguably in Nottinghamshire has achieved this fantastic accolade. However, it is not all about winning but giving boys & girls the opportunity to play in a fun environment run in a very organised manner and just as important to us are the numerous sportsmanship awards the club has collected, and we are fully behind the FA’s Respect campaign. We estimate over the past 38 years we have seen approximately 5000 children pass through our club which is a fantastic achievement. One of the highlights of each season has to be our annual awards evenings and from those very early days in 1977 where there was iust one team attending with 12 people present we now hold 4 separate awards evenings due to the size of the club and we have over 1000 people attending each year The club has a very good website www.hucknallsports.com which continues to be a significant communication tool for the club with over 148000 hits since it was first introduced some 8 years ago. We currently operate at a number of different venues around Hucknall to accommodate our 25 teams namely Goosedale & Wigwam but are awaiting new ground facilities which we hope will be available very shortly. We also have a very successful Soccer School catering for boys & girls between the ages of 4 and 6 and to see children graduate from Soccer School into junior organised teams at Under 7’s is very rewarding for everyone within the club. It is most important to mention that without the huge army of volunteers including team managers, coaches, volunteers, committee members, parents and above all the most important asset of the club the hundreds of chidren who pull on the Red & White shirts of Hucknall Sports YCFC each week without whom the club would not operate today – a very big Thank You to everyone. We are also indebted to all our sponsors who have supported the club over the past 38 years, your help is very much appreciated. Hucknall Sports YCFC has a very proud history and you could be part of our great future.
Anyone interested in joining us at any age group from our very successful Soccer School and continuing for all ages from Under 7’s through to Under 18’s then please contact us through our website at www. hucknallsports.com or e mail andy@hucknallsports. com or contact telephone 0115 9521122 for further details.

The Embankment is a newly refurbished venue, situated on Trent Bridge. It was clear from the moment we walked in that the team at The Embankment are proud of the heritage of their building. Formerly the Boots “No.2” store in the company’s home city it also became the firm’s social club. The pub has been tastefully refurbished and adorned with Boots memorabilia, pharmaceutical antiques and striking wall art, some of which includes photographs of the local area from bygone years. The £600,000 investment is said to have ‘transformed the worst bits of the old interior and made a virtue of the best’. Original features - like the parquet floor, oak panelling, and stained glass - have been brought back to life, and complimented with contemporary features. With two bars, a restaurant, a conservatory, function rooms plus a planned gig venue downstairs, it lends itself well to community use. The adults only ‘Dispensary’ bar is particularly attractive and atmospheric, walking comfortably down the line between contemporary and tradition, and showcasing an excellent selection of real ale and craft beer. Their aim is to produce traditional food but with a Mediterranean twist and some British-style tapas – things like mini fishand-chips or cottage pie. We ate from the Sunday lunch menu. Starters were £2.95 to £3.95. We chose Serrano ham bruschetta topped with honey dressed watercress & pomegranate. A delight!
For mains our choices were steak, stilton & stout pie £9.95, chicken tikka masala £8.50 (both these were filling and delicious) or bangers & mash with onion gravy for £7.95 (chosen and enjoyed by our children). Our family were looked after well by Ryan. The meal was good quality and affordable and the place relaxing and casual. A good, honest venue serving great value food. In terms of The Embankment as a venue for your events like business seminars, conferences and meetings, team activities, training days, weddings, family celebrations and themed events they are happy to help you to plan your event and ensure you don’t pay more than you need to. The Embankment is a unique venue for all occasions. Relaxing and informal, within a great building with a fascinating history. Give it a try!
*Free parking for up to 60 cars.

Add melted butter & vanilla essence. Stir. Pour into a well greased 8” spring form cake tin. Place in pre-heated oven (170°C) for about 30 mins. Check after 25 mins.
Curried Carrot Soup Michael Caines, a Michelin star chef, kindly contributed this recipe. 500g carrots - peeled & chopped small 150g onions - chopped 150g unsalted butter 2 cloves garlic - peeled & crushed 1 tsp cumin seeds 2g madras curry powder 300ml chicken stock 500ml water 1 bouquet garnie fresh coriander leaves Method Sweat onion, garlic & carrots in a saucepan with a pinch of salt for 5 mins. Careful not to brown. Meanwhile toast cumin seeds in a dry pan. Then add madras powder & toasted cumin seeds to the vegetables & sweat for 2 mins. Add the stock, water and bouquet garnie. Bring to boil & add a little salt. Reduce to simmer for 30 mins. Then blend to a fine purée, pass through a sieve, return to a clean pan, season and garnish with coriander leaves. looking good, feeling great Nottingham is named as England’s official ‘Home of Sport’
Nottingham has been announced as England’s official Home of Sport, following a national campaign by tourism board VisitEngland, in a bid to find England’s top sporting destination. Having received more nominations than any other English destination, Nottingham was the ‘People’s Choice’ going into the public vote, and then went on to be a clear winner with 38% of the overall vote. James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive, says: “Live sporting events are great drivers for tourism, worth £3.2 billion to the sector. With this accolade, Nottingham has been put firmly on the tourist trail as a must-visit destination for any sports fan. As the site of our glorious Ashes win this summer, the setting for the critically acclaimed I Believe in Miracles film and the home to the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham offers visitors plenty to see and do.” Simon Starr, Director of Sport Nottinghamshire, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Nottingham has been recognised as England’s Home of Sport. We are blessed with fantastic and iconic facilities, great teams, great coaches and some amazing athletes but more than that, Nottingham is a city that lives and breathes its sport. The title is well deserved and I hope it will help to inspire even more people in Nottingham to lead healthy and active lives” Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Nottingham City Council, said: “Nottingham is a very worthy winner of this accolade, being voted England’s Home of Sport 2015. Our city offers world-class sporting facilities and events for both local people and for visitors to the area. I’m particularly pleased that we were the ‘people’s choice’ as it shows how proud the people of Nottingham are of their city’s sporting achievements.”

Be Kind To Yourself The first couple of months of the new year can be cold, dark and miserable. Party season is over. You’ve drunk far too much, eaten your own body weight in chocolate oranges, not moved off the settee for a fortnight (reaching for the remote doesn’t count!) and spent the GNP of a small country on presents. Does it really make sense to suddenly pledge to lose 3 stone in three weeks, join a gym and go every night and not spend another penny until next December? I don’t think so!! A few years ago I decided to give up making resolutions on new years eve. The pattern was the same every year. Setting myself up to fail, then beating myself up when, surprise, surprise, I achieved nothing. As a general rule January and February can be pretty bleak. Depriving yourself of things that make you happy doesn’t help. Forget resolutions and instead focus on being nice to yourself. I recently came across an old Facebook page called “Be Kind To Yourself Challenge”. All you had to do was come up with one complementary thing about yourself every day for a month. What a lovely idea. It beats starving yourself anyway. If you must set yourself some goals for 2016 then at least make them realistic. Be honest with yourself.
Setting rules like no chocolate/alcohol/ spending money for four weeks rarely works. Instead why not try avoiding chocolate from Monday to Thursday? Knowing there is a light at the end of the tunnel makes a massive psychological difference. Same goes for exercise. Think about what you enjoy. I tried a Zumba class once. Never again. I was awful. But plenty of people love it. And if you love something you are much more likely to stick with it. If you hate the idea of a gym then maybe long walks would work. Small changes can make a big difference. There are loads of great apps to help you achieve goals. Here at ng magazines we have all done the C25K. None of us could run at all let alone 5k. We all used the app , gradually building up at our own pace and it works! We can all now run 5k without stopping. So let’s enjoy these first few months of 2016. Let’s celebrate what we have! Let’s take small, realistic steps towards our goals. If we feel like a bar of chocolate then lets have one! Eat well, sleep lots, drink plenty of water, move more, be mindful of your surroundings, say one nice thing about yourself everyday and things suddenly don’t seem too bad. © Ali Wale

Staying visible while cycling at night When the days are shorter it is more important than ever to ensure your bicycle is not only road worthy but also kitted correctly for night use. Did you know that if you are on the roads when it’s dark your bicycle is legally required to have both lights and reflectors fitted? Here are some other legal requirements for cycling on roads at night: • Your front light must be white and have a 110 degree visibility • Your rear light must be red • Front and rear lights are allowed to flash • You must also have a red rear reflector and BS6102/2 amber reflectors on the front and rear of each pedal It is good practice to use your rear light when cycling during the autumn and winter months as the weather can change quickly and being as visible as possible on the road should be a priority.
when it is worn on parts of the body that move. Consider adding reflective items to body parts that move, i.e. shoes with reflective strips, reflective wrist bands and gloves and, if wearing a back pack or rucksack, ensure it has reflective strips or areas for greater visibility. We also recommend you wear a rear light on your back pack or your helmet for extra visibility. The additional height of the light will be at eye level for most motorists You should also ensure the batteries in your lights are always in full working order and not running low. Staying visible on the roads during the winter months is important; it doesn’t cost the earth and can help you have many hours of safe cycling.
Hi-viz clothing is also an ideal way of staying visible during dusk and dark nights. Reflective clothing is a highly effective way of being seen on the busy roads, especially Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? THE NURSES HOME Did anything important happen in Hucknall in 1897? It was the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. A decision was made that the best way to honour the anniversary was to build a home for local nurses and immediately money was donated to the cause. Lists of subscriptions appeared in newspapers from April onwards. The Duke of Portland gave the site on Beardall Street. Local people thought this was such an important project that they gave what they could down to small donations of 6d. By October that year Mr. Dove of Hucknall, the contractor for the building, had begun working to the design of the architect Mr. Bromley of Nottingham.
At the stone laying ceremony on the 20th October speeches were made explaining the history of the project reaching back several years. The County Council had recently awarded scholarships to enable suitable women to train and Hucknall was fortunate in obtaining the first one. Lady Belper was president of the Notts. Federation of District Nursing Associations so it was fitting she was in Hucknall for the ceremony. Mr. Ellis presented her with a silver trowel and her ladyship gracefully performed the function and said the stone was “Well and truly laid”. The sum raised at this point was £600 but £700 was needed in total. A collection from the crowd realised a superb £20. The guests then departed to the Primitive Methodist schoolroom where a tea was provided for 350 people on tables which were beautifully set and adorned with flowers. In two relays they partook of an excellent meal provided by the ladies of the committee. In the autumn of 1897 there was a typhoid epidemic in Newstead and the Hucknall nurses attended the patients. An extra person was hired to help the nurse and her assistant for the duration of the epidemic. Apparently “out of 30 people attacked only one died which was
remarkable considering that 20% of the victims usually died and it showed how efficatious the nursing must have been”. The Nurses Home was to be opened ‘officially’ on 24th February 1898 by the Duchess of Portland. On the day local people were busy. Tradesmen decorated shops, arches were erected, and displays made. The Midland Railway Company decorated the station, carpets were spread on the platform and on the steps leading to the highway. Her Grace arrived on the 3.45 express and was met by Lady Belper, Mr. J. Hind and Mr. F.N. Ellis. She drove through the streets in an open carriage with the tremendous throng cheering vociferously. On arrival at the home the Duchess took a seat on the platform listening to Mr. Ellis explaining how pleased they were to have her perform the opening ceremony. The Duchess unlocked the door of the building and inspected the rooms all of which were beautifully furnished. Afterwards she said “It gives me great pleasure to visit Hucknall Torkard and open this home today”. Tea was provided at the Public Hall where a large number sat down. The Duke gave the land to 7 named trustees. “The land and buildings are to be held in trust and used as a nurses home for nurses employed under the Hucknall Torkard Nursing Association, the money for which had been collected by public subscription; there are covenants as to the regulations under the trust. These papers are dated 28th October 1898.” In February 1899 Mr. F.N. Ellis photographed the Ladies Executive Committee, the Friendly Society delegates and the two nurses in front of the Nurses Home making a good picture which was to be framed and hung there. Called Belper House in honour of Lady Belper; it was the first nurses home in Nottinghamshire and set the standard for others in the county. Belper House, the Nurses Home was demolished in 2010 but the stone was taken into safe keeping. Houses are now being built on the site and the builders ‘Jelson Homes’ are to set the stone into a wall close to the location of the building. This item is taken from a much longer article in Hucknall Torkard Times, issue 57, December 2010 where all sources are listed. © Maureen Newton
