Equality Rules... Doesn’t It? by Helen Jones I was intrigued but also a little saddened to read that Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson, who was born with cerebral palsy, has launched a new firm with a mission to transform employment for disabled people. It’s a sad indictment of our society that in 2019 there is still prejudice and misgivings surrounding employing people with physical impairments. According to disability charity Scope, 19% of working age adults are disabled – that’s a large number of people with skills that could enhance the workplace. Did you know that discrimination against any form of disabled candidate is actually unlawful under the Equality Act 2010? This applies to both physical and mental disability. In my last article I touched on the importance of good mental health in the workplace and being supportive of colleagues. In any organisation senior management should also demonstrate fair and equal hiring practices by always considering applicants who are disabled. As an employment business we have placed many candidates who had different physical needs with clients who have been happy to accommodate and benefit from the skills and experience they bring to the role. The world is a diverse place and so should the workplace be. There are many organisations who offer help and advice if you or anyone you know has been affected by this issue. Disability Law Service (DLS) www.dls.org.uk 020 7791 9800 Mind www.mind.org.uk 0845 766 0163 Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) www.rnib.org.uk 0303 123 9999
All correct answers will be entered into a draw. The winner will be notified by Friday 29 March 2019. The performance is at 7.30pm on Tuesday 9 April 2019.

: Over lord s w ie v e R n Bur to y Call of Dut From the guy who brought you Star Wars The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams produces a grotesque body-horror fright-night event that shows what happens when the worst evil in human history, Nazis, is combined with what goes bump in the night. Welcome to Overlord, hope you survive the trip. Taking cues from Call of Duty Zombies, Overlord firmly sticks you into the mud-crusted boots of World War II soldier Boyce (Joven Adepo). On the brink of D Day, Boyce and a platoon of soldiers are tasked with taking down a communications tower in a small French town that is blocking signals needed to give the troops on Normandy beach the air support they desperately need. But when their planes are hit with a barrage of anti-aircraft fire, Boyce and his squad are left stranded. Still with a mission to do they push forward, but what they uncover along the way is way more horrifying than just a communications base. Keeping in line with the movie’s obvious influence, Call of Duty Zombies, Overlord sways more towards action than toe curling horror. But when the action is this good that is not a problem. Overlord is still scary though. The horror comes from seeing the excellently vile practical bodyhorror effects. These aren’t your typical zombies, more undead super soldiers. Muscular vessels of twisted flesh and rage speed down the hallways of the dank Nazi laboratory towards their prey. Overlord constantly escalates its skin-crawling horror through uncovering more and more about how these tools of destruction were once human, especially in one stand out sequence that shows exactly how painfully transformative the whole process is. Through cramped, eyes-on-the-ground visuals and overwhelming sound design you feel like you are sitting right next to Boyce on the rattling plane, with only uncertainty in your future. This intensity doesn’t stop after the explosive intro either, it accompanies you like your shadow throughout the course of the 110 minute runtime.
And the squad is the reason that these events are so intense. Impressive action and scary effects can only get you so far before they just become stylish decorations. What will keep you rooted in Overlord’s fiction is the surprisingly deep and well written cast of characters assembled for these testing events. Overall Overlord is popcorn fun and scares done in the best way possible. Want great action against a terrifying assortment of hellish creatures? Overlord has that. Want investing characters that aren’t just cardboard cut outs of clichés, but actual interesting and fully realised characters to take you through this Nazi hell-scape? Overlord has that. Want intense sequences of horrific imagery that will make you stay up at night? Overlord has that in spades. Overlord = 8.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

HUCKNALL TORKARD CEMETERY by Maureen Newton FORMING THE BURIAL BOARD AUGUST 1884 St. Mary’s Churchyard was at a point where to accept many more burials would be a serious health risk to the community. After due notice a public meeting was held with the vicar in the chair. It was moved by Mr. Andrew Radford; seconded by Mr. James Widdowson “That a burial ground be provided for the parish of Hucknall Torkard under the Burial Acts of 1852 and 1871”. It was decided that the new Burial Board should consist of 9 persons and these were to be Charles Calladine, a butcher, Watnall Road; William Hanson, wheelwright, Watnall Road; Turner Haslam, botanist, Portland Road; John Collins, fall hand, Spring Bank; John Brown, newsagent, Spring Street; Samuel Mellows, tailor, Annesley Road; Stephen Kirkby, fall hand, Albert Street; George Webster, miner, Lambert Hill; Samuel Brown, fall maker, Hankin Street. Mr. Byng of the Nottingham Joint Stock Bank was appointed treasurer to the Board. CHOOSING THE SITE Various sites within the parish were considered for a cemetery and visited by the Board. Although the plots of land visited were owned by the Duke of Portland they were in the occupation of the following people as tenants. Land on Beardall Lane by Mr. Widdowson; Sandy Lane, by Mr. Jacklin and Widdowson; a field called The Bull Close by The memorial is to Samuel Mellows Samuel Dore; Wood Lane who opened the by Mr. Widdowson. Land cemetry in 1887. was also considered on Farleys Lane, Annesley Road and fields occupied by Mr. Rhodes. Since the Duke owned the land a deputation went to meet the Duke’s steward. It was ordered that the land on the estate of the Duke in Hucknall be tested for suitability by digging out grave spaces to a depth of 9 feet. Mr. F. Hayes spent
eleven hours digging out holes testing various sites and was paid £2. 10s. Mosley Lane (now Broomhill Road) was selected as most suitable. It was agreed to purchase the land subject to the approval of the parishioners and Home Secretary. Therefore 8 acres were purchased from the Duke of Portland at a cost of £250 per acre. A report in the Mansfield & North Notts. Advertiser, dated 23rd January 1885, stated “Many different spots in the parish have been tested but owing to the shallow strata of soil laying upon the magnesium sandstone these have had to be abandoned in favour of the chosen site. The locality will be somewhat distant from the Annesley Road district. However, the new extension of Byron Street to the Butlers Hill district, which it is proposed to make, will bring the Watnall Road residents within convenient distance of the new cemetery. The land is the property of the Duke of Portland in the occupation of Miss Coupe and Mr. McClure.” PLANS FOR THE SITE Invitations were issued to four architects to submit competitive plans with instructions that the total cost of the chapel, caretakers house and entrance gates should not exceed £1,000. Plans submitted by Mr. Goodall were accepted by the Board and a copy sent off to the Home Office in London. Mr. Goodall wrote a letter on April 15th 1885 saying he was pleased the Board had chosen his plans and would spare no effort to justify the confidence placed in him. On Thursday May 7th 1885 a meeting sanctioned the Hucknall Torkard Burial Board to borrow the sum of £4,500 on loan for 50 years, at 4% interest, repayable in 50 instalments. This amount was to cover the total cost of the cemetery including: the site, chapel, lodge, entrance gates, boundary walls, laying out the grounds and all necessary works. It would also be important to make a new road to the entrance gates.

Inspire has received a National Lottery grant of £10k for an exciting heritage project, Home Cooked Heritage, in Nottinghamshire. The project focuses on uncovering and sharing the food heritage of Nottinghamshire; family recipes, food producers, social history and what food means to us all now. Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the project will enable local young people from two schools to visit Nottinghamshire Archives and work with the materials, to both learn about, and be inspired by, food stories. They will work with heritage expert James Wright, performerstoryteller Nicky Rafferty and visual artist Clare Taylor, to produce creative and literacy responses to the heritage materials.

Tanya About Town With New Year behind us, how many of you have stuck to your resolutions? Did you plan to get out more? Explore a bit more culture? Well, here are my suggestions for some of the things to do in and around Nottinghamshire during the first part of the year. Whether you're a visitor or just want to get to know the city a little better, there are lots of tours to take you around the town. Join Hello Notts Tours on the “Nottingham Highlights” City of Nottingham Sightseeing Guided Walking Tour. They take place from March to October. Or explore Nottingham’s rich history and spectacular sites on the Robin Hood Town Tour before heading to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, built into the cliff on which Nottingham Castle stands. Enjoy a hearty pub lunch and pint of ale, with regular dates throughout the year. You may already be aware of the National Justice Museum in Nottingham’s historic Shire Hall, but have you ever wondered about its hidden secrets? A special new guided tour gives VIP access to the museum's secret spaces and runs throughout the year. Big names in music are set to visit the city this year. Superstar Ozzy Osbourne kicks off the UK leg of his final tour at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on 1 February. The less controversial Paul Carrack, one of the most revered voices in music, returns to the Royal Concert Hall on 14 February to the delight his legions of admirers with the new album These Days.
Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Catch it at the Theatre Royal 12 - 16 Feb. Fancy some nostalgia? Halfway To Paradise tells the story of Billy Fury, featuring the original members of Billy's own band, Fury's Tornados, alongside the golden voice of Colin Gold at the Royal Concert Hall 19 Feb and Wannabe, a spectacular concert created to celebrate the career of the World's biggest girl band, the Spice Girls visits on 10 March. And finally, 'Keeeeep Dancing' as The Strictly Come Dancing Live UK Tour is back and waltzing into the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham for three shows on 5 - 6 February while Brendan Cole leads his cast in a thrilling extravaganza of music and dance at the Royal Concert Hall 20 Feb and join the nation's favourite ballroom couple, Anton & Erin in their new, show-stopping dance production, Those Magical Musicals - 3 Mar 2019'
Want to feel old? Its 20 years since 'You've Come A long Way Baby', but just a few months until Fatboy Slim brings his new tour to Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on 1 March. Also Ali, Astro and Mickey - the sounds of UB40 come to Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall with 'A Real Labour of Love Tour' to celebrate the 40 years since they first performed live! George Ezra continues his phenomenal career with the announcement of his first ever headline arena tour. The tour takes in 10 arena shows across the UK, heading to the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on 12 March. One of the world's greatest classical singers Alfie Boe brings his tour back to the UK, announcing a date in what is becoming another landmark year for the much loved tenor. He will be performing at the Royal Concert Hall on 10 April, or take a musical journey through Neil Diamond's glittering 50 year career at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall on 13 April. Fancy a laugh? Father Ted star Ardal O'Hanlon will appear at Lakeside Arts on 2 March in his latest stand-up show. Multi-award-winning Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert is back with a brand new live show. In a six-year break from stand-up, a lot has happened to Rhod. Find out what at the Royal Concert Hall on 4 April. The regional premier of Wonderland, a spirited and uplifting drama written by the daughter of a Nottingham miner opens at Nottingham Playhouse 8 - 23 February. Tennessee Williams' explosive 1947 domestic drama, A Street Car Named Desire was a sensation on stage and screen and comes to the Lace Market Theatre 28 Jan - 2 Feb. HUCKNALL TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Watnall Road, Hucknall, NG15 6EY Telephone – 07572 473037 Email – hucknalltownfootballclub@gmail.com Website – www.hucknalltownfc.co.uk HUCKNALL TOWN FC – YOUR CLUB IN THE COMMUNITY Hucknall Town FC is a family friendly community football club established as Hucknall Colliery Welfare FC in 1943. The club was renamed Hucknall Town in 1987 and rose up through the football pyramid. From 1999 to 2004 we played in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, winning the Championship in the 20034 season. However, as our Watnall Road stadium did not meet the then standards of the Football Conference we were refused promotion to the Conference National Division. The club was due to be relegated from the Conference North to the Northern Premier League Premier Division following the 2007-08 season and this would have been the first relegation from any league in the club’s history. However, Halifax Town’s financial woes meant that Hucknall Town was reprieved. The club was eventually relegated at the end of the 2008-09 season. Relegation at the end of the 2010-2011 season saw them drop into the NPL Division One South and further financial woes saw them relegated again, two levels in 2012-2013 to Central Midlands League Division One South. Over the last five years under the guidance of Manager Andy Graves, Assistant Manager’s Phil Henry, Paul Stevenson and a strong committee, there has been resurgence in the Club’s fortunes season on season to the point that we are challenging for honours once again. This season, 2018-19 we have linked up with Hucknall Warriors FC, a well respected local youth’s club. The association is to create a larger and stronger set up for the benefit of the local community where the youth element can be developed further and in time provide a feeder in to the Warriors senior team and Town’s senior first team. We have finally been given an estimated date for the completion of our new stadium in Aerial Way, just off Watnall Road, October/November 2019. th The has very popular large function with room to hire match for weddings, a challenge taking Thisclub season weacelebrate the Club’s 75 anniversary place on Thursday 27 December, Hucknall Townetc..We present side Hucknall Town the birthdays, christenings, funeral wakes can valso provide Legends, kick-off 11am, admission £2.00 in aid of Cancer Research. food and a disco. Bransons Reptiles Readers may recall an appeal several months ago from a local charity hoping to get a home for Timmy cat – but unbelievably he is still waiting... This healthy 6 year old feline has Animal Accident Rescue Unit’s volunteers puzzled: he’s been waiting for a home for two years. ‘He’s barely had anyone even ask about him - it’s both odd and sad – as he really is the most perfect cat companion. He’s housetrained, very well behaved and loves fuss. We so hope that this appeal will finally see a new year-new home for Timmy!’ confirms his fosterer. All the charity’s cats are microchipped, flea and worm treated, FIV tested (Timmy is clear) and vaccinated for the first year - after which the new owner has responsibility. To find out more about Timmy, with a view to potentially meeting him in the fur, either email admin@aaru.org.uk, or call 01159321555, and leave a message with your contact details. Walks With Emily & Friends Strelley Village lies just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Nottingham city centre. Not to be confused with Strelley, which lies just across the main road, Strelley Village is a quaint area with lovely footpaths and home to Strelley Hall.
walk down this path you will eventually reach the M1 motorway, and go through a tunnel underneath. At this point, follow the path round to the left and keep to this path until you reach a main road. At this point there is a short walk up the road, so dogs will need to be kept on a short lead. Follow this road up (Dead Lane) being careful to watch for oncoming traffic as this small section doesn’t have a path. At the top of the hill, turn right down Robinettes Lane (past the farm shop). Keep walking down this lane for a short while until you see a footpath sign and a metal gate on the right (signposted to Strelley).
Walk distance: 4 miles Difficulty: Easy- all on the flat Pub stop: The Broad Oak - Strelley Village (just down from start and end point) Starting point: Lay by off Main Street, Strelley Village For this route, park up at the lay by just off Main Road. This is free - if it is full, try the Broad Oak pub (although you will have to pay to park here). From where you have parked, turn left up the bridleway. Continue down this path as it bends round until you reach a fork. Instead of continuing up, follow the path round to the right continuing across fields with a wooded area on your right. Keep following the path down until you reach a cross roads - there should be a green sign telling you where all the footpaths go, turn right following the footpath towards Cossall. As you

Take this turning and walk across the fields following the footpath signs and going through several gates. Eventually you will come to another road (more like a farm track). Continue up until you reach a T-junction, and here turn right. Walk along the road passing over the M1 motorway, until you can see Strelley Hall in the distance. When you have crossed over the footbridge, you will be back in Strelley Village. Turn right and walk back down the road to your car. A New Year, A New You Every January, masses of the British population plunge into a frenzy of dieting in an attempt to counterbalance weight gained during the holidays. Various foods are banned and a new exercise regime is created, only for the whole thing to be abandoned a couple of weeks later. As a BANT registered nutritionist, I find the January “diets” especially amusing, for two very good reasons: diets rarely work and cutting out entire food groups is not a sustainable practice. Luckily there are some simple dietary tweaks that deliver big results if losing weight and getting healthy is your goal. Start with protein The jury is out on whether breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day or if it’s just a marketing ploy invented by Kelloggs. What we do know is that if you eat breakfast, making it a protein based one has its advantages. Studies show that eating a high-protein breakfast is both protective against weight-gain and regulates appetite for the rest of the day. The net result is fewer hunger pangs or food cravings throughout the day. Eat more veg We only have to glance at the current list of superfoods to notice that fruits and vegetables are the very things that are exceptionally good for us. Gram for gram, plants contain a greater quantity and combination of vitamins and minerals than anything else that is likely to pass our lips. Research by Imperial College London suggests eating 10 portions of vegetables and fruits for optimum wellness. Whilst that may seem a little excessive, it doesn’t mean that you’ll need to chow down on mountains of vegetables. A handful of spinach, a couple of florets of broccoli and a few spears of asparagus added to a lunch will count as 3 of those portions. Repeat that twice more in a day and you are onto a winner. Hydrate Water is an essential component of every cell of the body, in fact the average person is approximately 65% water. Since we are more water than human, it pays off to stay hydrated. The good news is, by consuming 8 glasses of water a day, you are more likely to sustain a healthy weight, experience fewer food cravings and reduce your chances of chronic disease. Spend time outdoors As health benefits go, spending time outdoors comes with a whole host of them, yet it’s one of the most overlooked. Research shows spending time in nature has a significant de-stressing, gut boosting and immune strengthening effect.Try a 30-minute lunch time or post-work walk per day. It’s free and a decent form of exercise.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

TOP TIPS FOR NEW YEAR FITNESS
At the start of the new year, most of us make a subconscious promise to ourselves to make some better health choices. After all, we want to be around as long as possible to share many more social and festive times with loved ones. How we look after our bodies really does matter.
My Top Tips for Making an Impact on Your Health 1. Make small adjustments to start with. Don’t completely alter your diet or double your exercise routine hoping it will produce a result. You will fail before you really get going. 2. Everything altered or improved is an additional external stress on the body so remember to take your time when making changes. 3. All changes should be maintainable, if they aren’t then they won’t produce the result you are really searching for. 4. Following the latest new year craze diet isn’t going to work if you can’t maintain the effort once you achieve your goal. Entering back into old habits will produce old results. 5. MAKE A PLAN…. Or hire a coach to educate you and guide you to the result you’ve promised yourself. Asking for help is the best way to succeed. 6. And most of all...be patient. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. It may take months to see positive changes, but it’ll be worth it.
Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk
If you follow these principles for any fitness or nutritional changes you make in the new year I can assure you, as an online coach whose passion is producing sustainable body and mind transformations, these are key to succeeding with any plan you choose to embark on.
Exercise Start with the minimum amount of days you can realistically commit to each week. If you say five but can only manage five sessions once a month, then commit to three sessions and build around this. The disappointment of not hitting your target could leave you in a negative state of mind and you could slip back into making poor choices. Adding exercise into your life shouldn’t be complicated. We can all find time to exercise. We waste lots of hours on social media, so why not walk for an hour instead? You can still check your device or listen to some music! That’s around 300-400 calories a day burnt. Do this for 4-5 days a week and you will burn 1lb of actual body fat within two weeks without even altering your current diet.
Whatever health improvements you choose to change this new year, please make them enjoyable and sustainable, you will have less to worry about if it becomes part of your daily life.
Happy New Year !

“No No Ordinary Tree -No No Ordinary Restaurant” Restaurant
T
B T, readily found in India is no ordinary tree as it has the ability to continually spread by putting down new roots that in turn form new trunks. Over time one single tree can grow to the size and strength of a small forest! Amongst people in India the Banyan is revered for its mystical properties and provides a focal point for village folk to meet, take shade and watch the day go by. We take our inspiration from the organic yet mystical properties of this special tree and endeavour to grow our business in the same way. Since opening our doors in January 2007, The Banyan Tree has certainly taken root, and eleven years on it continues to grow and consistently serves fine quality Indian cuisine. Those of you who have tried us will know that we are up there with the very best in Nottinghamshire. Our slogan is "no ordinary tree - no ordinary restaurant", and our food and service rarely fails to strike a cord with our patrons. Naturally, we use only the freshest of ingredients, and all our spices, massala, and sauces are skilfully
prepared from primary ingredients which naturally yield flavours that are distinct in taste and quality. Our menu boasts a great balance of popular offerings and a notable selection of signature dishes which have been so well received that we have seldom changed our menu. However, we hope you are as excited as us to learn that we have launched a new menu this January 2019. Our new menu has focused around the introduction of more healthier grills and a select few starters and curries. But do rest
assured that our high service standards, restaurant design and ambience shall always remain a constant. Please visit our website www.thebanyan.co.uk to peruse our new menu.

LET’S GET BAKING N
ot many of us can find the time to bake these days, despite the popularity of programmes such as the Great British Bake Off, but there is no doubt that a home-baked cake can knock the socks off anything you can buy ready-made in the supermarket. If you do decide to bake your own cakes, not only will you fill the house with a gorgeous aroma that makes the whole family feel like they’ve stepped back in time, you will also be following in the footsteps of our ancestors. The first evidence of baking dates back to the ancient world. The oldest oven
ever discovered was in Croatia in 2014 dating back some 6500 years. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks baked bread and baking flourished under the Romans with their love of festivals and feasts. The first Bakers’ Guild was established in Rome in 168 BC. The recipes I have chosen are simple and quick so you won’t spend all day in the kitchen, they also celebrate the use of fruit in baking, so whilst I can’t claim they are healthy or detoxifying, they do at least contribute to your 5 a day!

Passionfruit Sandwich Cake
Seasonal Pear Cake
Best Ever Banana Bread
A really easy cake this one, sweet but with the tang of passionfruit, perfect with a cuppa. Ingredients 200g butter, soft 200g golden caster sugar 4 eggs (beaten) 200g self-raising flour (sifted) A dash of milk Passionfruit filling 4 large passionfruit 100g butter, very soft 200g icing sugar
This is best made with soft, buttery pears and served warm with a dollop of cream or crème fraiche. Ingredients 50g butter (melted) 500g ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped Juice of 1 lemon 75g caster sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 2 tbsp apricot jam for glaze
A really easy quick bake, that can be frozen. Ingredients 140g softened butter 140g caster sugar 140g self-raising flour 1tsp baking powder 2 large eggs (beaten) 3 ripe bananas (retain half of one for slicing on the top of the cake)
Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas4. Line and butter 2 x 20cm sponge tins. Beat butter and sugar until light and soft then beat in eggs, flour and milk to make a smooth batter. Divide between tins and smooth off. Bake for 20/25 mins until risen and golden. Leave to cool. Halve the passionfruit and scoop out the seeds, push through a sieve to obtain the juice. Beat the butter until light and combine with half the icing sugar, add 2 tbsp of the passionfruit juice and the rest of the icing sugar. Brush the two inside faces of the sponges with the left-over juice and then spread the filling on one half, add the top and dust with icing sugar.
Heat oven to 180°C/160°fan/gas4. Line and grease a 20cm, loosebottomed cake tin. Put pears into a bowl with lemon juice to prevent them going brown. Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl, add a pinch of salt and the caster sugar. Beat in the eggs and melted butter then fold in the pears. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for about 50 mins. Cool on a wire rack. To make the glaze, melt the apricot jam with 1 tbsp water and brush on the surface of the cake.
Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas4. Butter and line a 2lb loaf tin. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy then add in the beaten eggs and a little flour. Fold in the remaining flour, the baking powder and 2 ½ mashed bananas. Pour into the tin and decorate with sliced banana, bake for about 30 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Rest in the tin for 10 mins and then cool on a wire rack.

The Rock ’n’ Soul Singers
Well, we rehearsed, we gathered and we sang! In October we were warmly welcomed at Lark Hill Residential Village in Clifton, making our visit there particularly pleasant. In November we returned to the Elderberries club at Greasley to sing some old favourites and some new items. We were pleased to join the community at two Christmas Tree lighting events, in Selston and Underwood. Our own Rock ‘N’ Soul Christmas Concert held at Selston Parish Hall was very well attended and enjoyed by everyone. We are also delighted to report that our audiences have been very generous and helped us collect a substantial amount for YOUNGMiNDS, our designated charity for this year. Do visit our website or look at our facebook page to see where we will be performing in the future – and if possible, come along!

J M Wills - A Service You Can Trust By making a properly drawn-up will, you can decide what will happen to your property and possessions after your death, ensuring that your loved ones are provided for and that they have one less thing to worry about. A will ensures you can leave your property and possessions to whoever you choose, although advice should be obtained to ensure you have made reasonable provisions for your dependants. At a time when modern families are becoming increasingly “blended making a will now is even more important then ever.
Who will your family turn to when no will has been written to guide them? If you have made a will, when was the last time you reviewed this? Time and circumstances might mean that a will made several years ago is no longer appropriate to your current situation. J M Wills & Legal Services can make the whole process easy and it can be carried out in the comfort of your own home where they can help you make these hard decisions.
There are also a number of ďŹ nancial considerations that have to be considered like inheritance tax and old age planning.

Despite your anxieties, others DO think highly of you and want the very best for you. And, this month, this will be proven by the offer of a “second chance” from an unexpected source. Take it with both hands and appreciate the confidence this shows in you as an individual. Stop undervaluing yourself.
You have a guarded nature and, if in doubt, will defend rather than open up. Do things differently, this month, and notice the difference it makes. Friendships blossom, invitations mount up, good vibes swirl all around. Sometimes you need to let down those hatches, because people want to get to know you.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(Seven of Coins, The Fool, Judgment)
(King of Wands, Six of Coins, The Magician)
A left-field turn in the road.
Magic up something special.
A period of reflection ends in a surprising way, as you decide to totally change course! Others may raise an eyebrow, but let them... they don’t have to live your life- you do! Take the path you’ve yearned to, even if “on paper” it doesn’t seem to make sense. This is an important crossroads, so don’t sleepwalk by it.
You have got the potential, this month, to create something magical for you and your loved ones to enjoy. Perhaps it’s a holiday, an outing, an adventure or just a social gathering… what inspires you? You alone have got the imagination and determination to make this daydream a reality, and have fun doing so. Enjoy!

The Telly
Tale
By the time you read this, “I’m a Pleb”, as we like to call it, will be a distant memory. We will already be racking our brains as to who was crowned the King or Queen of the jungle and the “celebrities” will all be signing up for the next reality show. However, in my house it is compulsory viewing and actually the only programme that gets kids, dogs and adults all together on the sofa. So it does have its uses. After the jungle antics are over we are straight into Christmas fortnight. It’s the only time of the year I buy the Radio Times and turn into my Grandma by circling all the programmes I want to watch with a black marker. I then forget to watch any of them.
Did you know... • the inventor of television would not let his own children watch TV • the average person in the UK watches over 4 hours telly a day • Top Gear is the most watched show with 350 million viewers in over 170 countries • the first couple to be shown in bed together on telly were Fred and Wilma Flinstone Telly these days is shockingly bad. How is it possible to have access to hundreds of channels and nothing to watch? Do I really
want to see scallywags being chased by police cars three times a day? Or scallywags fiddling the welfare state? Or scallywags wasting the time of our emergency services? No I do not! And just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, Dr Pimple Popper appeared on our telly. Dr...Pimple...Popper... Any ideas? Yep, it’s a programme about squeezing spots. Holy Moly how low can you go?? And it’s not just the programmes. The adverts are even worse. Sitting down, about to tuck into my “chuck it all in a pan and hope for the best” dinner, I do not want to be thinking about the benefits of Tena Lady pull on pants. Surely there is a time and place for these adverts and 8pm on a school night is not one of them! I could go on – but this is a family magazine... It’s the youth I feel sorry for. The innocence of dating programmes like Blind Date have been replaced by Love Island where wearing anything more than a bikini is a no, no. Even worse is Naked Attraction. A show where the only thing used to select a prospective partner is a view of their bottom half. And this is on at 10pm. I nearly choked on my chocolate Hob Nob when flicking through the channels with my kids on a family weekend away. And this is series 4!!! Stop the world, I want to get off... Thank goodness for NetFlix. Oh and Peaky Blinders. And Masterchef. And The Apprentice. And not forgetting The Island. Well, if you can’t beat ‘em..... © Ali Wale

BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019. A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!”
Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folkloreturned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to mention but a few. on yer bike! A few months ago I decided to forgo my personal safety and ride a bicycle to work. Why, might you ask, would a middle-aged man decide to do this? Well, ultimately this is all about getting regular exercise, having a faster commute, and saving some money. Don’t worry, I have no plans to become a MAMIL*, nobody needs to see me in all my aerodynamic glory, but I thought it may be worth sharing the experience for those thinking of doing the same. After all, how hard could it be after twenty years of not going near a bike? STUCK IN THE PAST It turns out that a lot has changed. Most importantly bike technology has moved on. Compared to when I last got in the saddle I feel like a Russian monkey in a space suit. I was bewildered by the choices. I used to have a five-speed Raleigh racing bike, with rubber block brakes and a gear lever on the side of the frame. Now I have to deal with more gears than I can count, too many cogs, hydraulic disc brakes, and bike frames made of materials that are lighter than air. Then I have the choice of racer, hybrid, cyclocross, mountain, hardtail, and more besides. Fortunately I know plenty of people who are already competent cyclists and I went with the following advice: ‘get a bullet-proof hybrid for commuting. Something that is low maintenance and you can’t break’. BUYER BEWARE So armed with all the information I could find I went to a local bike shop and was well attended by the staff. Having test ridden a bike that took my fancy I then loaded up with gear. Second piece of advice I was given was as follows: ‘Get a helmet, lights, hi-vis jacket, and a bike pump’. Armed with this I felt safe that I had the basics covered and didn’t resort to the classic blunder of trying to buy everything in the bike shop. To be honest, I think the staff took pity on me. FIRST RIDE So, I’d got the bike and the kit. Now I had to ride the thing. The third piece of advice I was given now stuck in my mind: ‘you’ve bought the bike, now make sure you ride it’. I was determined not to be someone who spent money on a bike and left it to gather dust in the garage. So I took it out for a spin down the ring road where there is a really wide cycle path (the further I was from traffic the better). About two miles in, and after a
rather violent attempt to change gears, the chain fell off and jammed itself between frame and deraileur (that’s the proper name for the big cog). Chastened, I had to walk my bike back home and phone a friend to help me out. Fortunately he was pretty understanding and glossed over my embarrassment and together we fixed the errant chain. ACHES AND PAINS Here’s something no-one tells you about riding a bike: your body will hate you for the first week or so. I’m relatively fit thanks to chasing my kids on a daily basis but I was the sorest man alive for the first week and a half of cycling. I decided to jump straight in and cycle to work every day which left me with aching legs, an inability to go up hills at anything more than a snail’s pace, and a really sore backside. I’m not proud about this, but it takes a while for your rear-end to get used to sitting on a saddle. Factor in all the bumps and potholes in Nottingham’s roads and I could make a case for mandatory cushions on my office chair. But it wears off fast, soon I was whizzing to work on a regular basis OTHER PEOPLE Here’s the other thing people don’t tell you: the minute you get on a bike you will become a militant cyclist. I’m not kidding, pedestrians, dog walkers, parked cars, traffic lights, drivers, students, they’re all wrong. None of them understand the trials of riding a bike and they are clearly subservient to your priority on the road or cyclepath. Now this is all a matter of perspective, but you’ll be amazed just how quickly you become Judgy McJudgeson of Judgeville on your commute. Good luck with that, the trick is to not buy into the idea that somehow only you know what you’re doing. So that’s it, my first foray into the world of cycling. Come back in a year and I’ll probably be clad head to foot in cycling gear with a garage full of bikes. *MAMIL - middle-aged man in lycra Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

kids Holgate staff member reaches milestone 40 years of service
Holgate employee, Dave Sharrard, reached a milestone in his career this month as he celebrated 40 years’ service at the academy. Dave, who is the academy’s site manager, started working at Holgate back in November 1978 as an assistant caretaker – one of his first jobs after leaving school. Over forty years, he has climbed the ranks to become the team leader, and is now responsible for 24 staff, academy health and safety issues and for the running and maintenance of Holgate’s split sites across Nabbs and Hillcrest. Academy Principal, Sue Forsey, commented: “Dave is a much admired and well-respected member of the Holgate team. It’s wonderful to celebrate his 40 years’ service with us and to recognise his commitment to the academy and everything he has done for us. Holgate would not be the same place without him.” Throughout his forty years in service, Dave has seen many changes at Holgate but remarks that one thing hasn’t changed: Holgate being “a great place to work with a strong team spirit!”. Congratulations to Dave and here’s wishing him many more successful years of service.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Stay safe this winter
Be prepared
We hope you have had a fantastic and safe Christmas and New Year celebrating with friends and family.
When heading out, do check the local weather reports and also the travel conditions. In severe weather, give yourself extra time to clear your windscreen properly before setting off and allow longer for your journey.
Home security With the darker nights we encourage you to think about how secure your home is. Please do leave lights on inside your home when you go out. Use low energy lamps and a timer switch, so lights come on to simulate an occupied home. Try and make sure your front door is well lit. Use dusk to dawn lighting that automatically comes on as it gets dark and keep your doors and windows locked at all times. Check your vehicle Before making any journey in the winter months, ensure you check fuel, oil and water levels. Also check your tyres have sufficient tread before setting out. It’s also important to check your lights and brakes are working effectively, including the handbrake and fog lamps.
On frosty mornings don’t leave your car running while you nip in for a kettle to defrost the windscreen. It only takes seconds for someone to get in and drive off! When driving, try to stick to main roads that have been gritted, wherever possible. These details can be found on the Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council websites. Also consider whether your journey is essential and be prepared with an emergency kit in your vehicle including ice-scraper, de-icer, warm clothes, boots, first aid kit, jump leads, a spade and sunglasses (for winter glare). For more information and for more winter safety advice visit: www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ advice/winter-safety Have a fantastic start to 2019!
Please do make sure you have the necessary levels of antifreeze for your car radiator and windscreen washers. Nottinghamshire Police is recruiting. Please visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/careers for details of what opportunities are currently available.
