kids Year 10 Students win Dragons Den Competition
Earlier this year ten Year 10 students represented the school at the Dragons Den 9 Competition at the Acacia Centre in Annesley. Students were required to come up with ideas to support the community in becoming more resilient. They competed against Quarrydale and Kirkby College. The entries were all excellent and showed very different interpretations of the brief. Our winning team came up with the idea of organising a Shakespearean charity run. They contacted Ashfield District Council to plan the site for the run as well as contacting companies to cost equipment for the run. The proceeds of the run would go to Young Minds to support their work on mental health with young people and to other local charities supporting people with mental health issues. The team designed a company logo as well as personalising all the race equipment. Their hope was to bring the community together with the fun run but also to inspire them to be more resilient by highlighting resilient characteristics of Shakespeare’s characters. Racers will not have numbers but resilient characteristics. The team came up with the acronym of P.U.S.H standing for Promoting Unity and Social Harmony - the ultimate goal of their project. They presented their ideas to a panel of Dragons including; Wendy Gleave from Young Minds and Paddy Tipping, Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire. As winners the team will now have £1000 prize money to make the run happen. So watch this space for how to get involved. Well done to the whole team- you are a credit to the school and the community.

What a MegaMoot!
Notts Guides and Scouts combine for their ‘biggest ever’ joint camp
Scouts from Hucknall joined thousands of youngsters from all over Notts at ‘MegaMoot’, a unique event staged jointly by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and Nottinghamshire Scouts over the early May bank holiday weekend. Claimed as the biggest camp for young people ever run in the county, MegaMoot Nottinghamshire was held at Walesby Forest Outdoor Activity Centre and attended by some 4,500 young people ranging in age from 5 to 25, supported by 500 adult volunteers. Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and Guides plus Senior Section, Explorers, Leaders and supporters camped out for the three nights, with a special day camp held on the Sunday for the organisations’ younger members, Rainbows and Beavers. Alex (10), Theo (11), Ethan (11) and Jonah (11) of 1st Hucknall Scouts (pictured above) all wanted to do as many of the activities as they possibly could. ‘The go-karts were amazing,’ they agreed. ‘And the fencing was great fun too!’ A huge diversity of MegaMoot activities ran throughout the weekend. They included kayaking, rafting, water-zorbing and BMX. Guest of honour at a reception held on the Saturday included newly-appointed Chief Guide Amanda Medler, who was attending her first big camp since being appointed.

Finding the Perfect Babysitter Finding a babysitter is one of the most difficult tasks out there.
Whether you’re a new parent searching for your first ever babysitter, or a seasoned parent with four children looking for the next babysitter in a long string of carers, it’s complicated to find the perfect fit.
Taking the actual step of leaving your child with a babysitter is daunting. You’ll have all the emergency numbers listed
in full view. You’ll remind the sitter that you’re simply a phone call away if there’s a problem. Did you mention that the youngest needs to be in bed by eight? Does the babysitter remember that the oldest has a peanut allergy? As you walk out the door, you’ll have a frantic few moments. You might even want to change your plans and head right back into the house.
driver’s licence, so last minute bookings will be problematic. They all have their pros and cons, how can you choose?
As obvious as it may sound, meeting with the
potential babysitters first is one of the best ways to find the best carer for you. Use this opportunity to discuss requirements. If you haven’t negotiated this before meeting the sitter, determine in person how much the babysitter will charge you. What is their hourly rate? Will they accept a lower fee if all they need to do is sit on the couch while the child sleeps?
Budgets are important, of course, but they’re
are many ways to find babysitters, especially nowadays with all the online babysitting platforms that help connect parents with local babysitters. The challenging part is finding a carer you can trust and that fits with your family. In order to finally take that daunting first step out of the house and leave your child with a babysitter, you’ll need to find the right one.
not the only thing you should take into account when searching for a babysitter. A good way to figure out if the carer will fit with your family is to have them interact with your children in front of you. Simply bring your children along to the meeting. Don’t outright tell them it’s a test, but do watch them carefully. Do they greet the children or just you, the parents? Do they smile at your children, ask them a few questions, and have an approachable attitude? I once met up with a family at a café, where the parents had brought both their children. I’m not sure it was intentionally supposed to be a test but a couple days later, the family hired me as their babysitter because I was apparently the candidate that connected best with their children (despite having less experience than the other babysitters they met).
So,
Knowing
However, at one point or another, you’re going
to need that babysitter. Perhaps you’re going to get stuck late at work and you’ll need someone available at the last second. Or maybe you’ll want to go out on a well-deserved and relaxed date night.
There
how do you find the “right one”? One babysitter may have many references and lots of experience. Another babysitter might have a less expensive hourly rate than the first, but they also have less experience. That third babysitter is perfect but they live on the other side of town and do not yet have their
that you are leaving your child with someone they’ve met before, that they are friendly and comfortable can truly make that step out the door much easier for you.
Written by Sonia Juillet in collaboration with Babysits, the babysitting community of the UK, new to Nottingham, that helps parents and babysitters connect easily and quickly.
Not just fit. Dad fit. Do you remember just after New Year when you resolved to change your lifestyle? Become fitter, eat better, drink less, and generally get buff for beach season? You created a pinterest board of exercise plans and cool looking beach shorts that you were planning on showing off in the summer. I’m guessing that like me, many of them have been completely forgotten as you polish off your child’s unfinished dinners and tuck into those extra helpings of pudding. After all, that bottle of beer in the fridge isn’t going to drink itself, and it would be rude to leave a slice of cake uneaten. And suddenly the holidays are closer. Unless you start on some high-intensity workout plan you’re running the risk of being mistaken for a muffin in swimwear. It’s hard to pretend you’re James Bond when you’re still carrying the Christmas cake. Have no fear, as every dad knows living with children is as much workout as anyone needs. Follow my foolproof steps below and you will be ready for the holidays (please note, this isn’t a legal guarantee. In fact it may not actually be true either!).
FULL BODY WORKOUT Your new regime starts from the moment you wake up: get out of bed, make breakfast, find the toys, switch on the TV, get the kids clothes, switch the TV channel, remake breakfast (they’ve changed their minds), force the kids to brush their teeth, try and get them dressed, find that shoe, no, the other one, work out where the school bags have gone, dress yourself before you leave the house…. Your workout will never end.
LEG DAY It’s important to focus on specific muscle groups in any exercise plan. Often the legs are overlooked but as long as you live in a house that includes both children and stairs you’ll be absolutely fine. Having kids means you’ll have to endure countless instances of running between floors. It doesn’t matter how many times you screech at your kids to come downstairs and get whatever toy they’re complaining about not having, they’ll stay in their rooms like the residents of a besieged castle forcing you to bend to their will. But remember this (as you’re climbing like Sisyphus for the umpteenth time), you will have calves to die for at the end of it.
MOBILE DAD Keeping your mobility is vital, especially as the years go on. Fortunately your kids are here to help. The thoughtful blighters constantly leave piles of clothes, toys, books and random debris across the house. All you have to do is pick it up. Regularly. And have no fear, just when you think you’ve done a sweep of the whole house your mini gym coaches will start the routine all over again. Isn’t it great to have such forward-thinking children. Just remember to bend from the knees.
STRESS INDUCED WEIGHT LOSS If all that sounds too much like hard work, don’t worry. All children will drive you to distraction with a continuous routine of not listening, constantly repeating the same questions, asking you to pick up the thing that’s within arms reach of them, singing terrible songs loudly, screaming, crying for no reason, and waking you up before the sun has thought about rising. All of this combined overload will naturally heighten your stress and anxiety resulting in unchecked weight loss (and probable hair loss and a general increase in muttering threats beneath your breath). That’s it dads. You have no excuse. Follow this handy exercise plan and you’ll be ready to audition for Baywatch. Failing that, there’s always the option to sit on the patio and finish off that last beer.
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

They have easy to use 200cc Biz karts which are great fun and thrilling to drive as you pitch machine against the tarmac. ‘I took my husband and two 14 year olds to test drive the track for ng magazines. They have karts suitable for both juniors and adults and the boys were raring to go. We received a really warm welcome from the owner Richard and his staff who were well organised and very professional, you are in safe hands! After being given overalls, helmet and a safety briefing, we were let loose on the track. My husband and the boys whizzed off with no hesitation and it didn't take me too long to get the hang of it and I soon gave them a run for their money. All they talked about in the car on the way home was ‘when are we going again’! So we will be booking another session in the very near future.’ S Cooper.

Making Sense of Dementia
This specialist programme consists of seven, two hour weekly sessions at venues throughout Nottingham and covers a different aspect of dementia in each session. The groups are facilitated by specialists in dementia group work and will give carers a chance to learn more about the illness, the services that are available and gain support from other carers. Help with respite services and transport may be available. We hope that by reaching out to carers who are coping with managing their own lives as well as caring for someone with this very debilitating disease there will be an opportunity to gain a better understanding of dementia by

understanding the changes in communication and behaviours, learning how to look after themselves as well as those they care for, understanding nutrition, infection control, treatable dementias and manage continence care. We also have information on other services, respite care, carer’s assessments and we discuss the legal implications of caring for someone with dementia, look at the Mental Capacity Act and what it means as well as welfare benefits. All this will hopefully improve the quality of life of both the carer and the cared for by increasing carer’s knowledge of dementia and improving coping skills, confidence and morale. The sessions also aim to reduce the sense of isolation. The programme is free to those that live in the Nottingham City and the County, all we ask is for a small contribution for refreshments. For more information or to book a place on one of our programmes please ring Bev Pearson on 0115 978 6133 or 07745 956880

Don’t sett health in
Stressed? It’s not healthy... As a BANT (British Assoc. For Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy) registered nutritionist, I see a fair share of clients with various health conditions. From digestive disorders to more complex issues, stress is always an unwelcome variable that is stopping individuals from getting better. Developed as a survival instinct to save us from incoming dangers, cortisol, the main stress hormone, is freely produced in response to stressful situations. Most of us will be pretty familiar with its effects. A racing heart, inability to switch off and anxiety, but what is lesser known is the wider ranging consequences: • Stress puts digestion on the back burner. Stress is a survival instinct, so why would you need to be digesting food whilst attempting to run away from a predator? IBS-type symptoms are common in chronically stressed individuals. • Similarly to digestion, fighting off infections also isn’t a priority whilst in a state of danger, so immunity is suppressed. The net result is a poorly functioning immune system and susceptibility to pick up every cold going. • Cortisol, the stress hormone, is the same substance that controls the sleep/wake cycle. Cortisol is naturally higher in the morning allowing us to wake up refreshed and drops through the day, making way for restful sleep. Higher levels of cortisol during the day or evening may contribute to poor sleep and morning grogginess. Needless to say, there is only so long that the body can go on in a stressed state.

30 Day Plan – how it worked for us... Here at NGHQ we like a challenge. In the last edition Eva told us all about her 30 day nutrition plan and we decided to give it a go. Here’s what happened... Eva sent us each an individual plan based on a questionnaire we completed on-line. There was Don’t lots of really useful information and advice. The expect plan also included meal ideas and recipes and guidance on how much protein, carbohydrates and fats we should each be eating. I knew I wasn’t eating enough and also not eating at the right times. The plan got me to focus on this. On a typical day I had Greek yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, a tuna salad for lunch and sweet potato or brown rice with loads of vegetables and chicken or fish for dinner. I was never hungry. Eva also got us drinking a lot more water than we were used to. With only a few tweeks to my diet I had loads more energy, lost 1” off my waist and reduced my urge to scoff crisps and chocolate biscuits the minute I got in from work. I also learnt not to be afraid of fat. Good It’sfat, personal like coconut oil, rapeseed oil and butter are an important part of a healthy diet. After 30 days I have continued to stick to most of my new eating habits. I work on an 80/20 split. So I am good 80% of the time and the other 20% of the time I eat and drink whatever takes my fancy! It works for me.
How do you stop stressing with screaming kids, a pressure filled job, bad relationships, money worries delete as appropriate -? Of course, it’s easier said than done.
Ali Wale
The answer may well be in self care. Far from being a hippy concept, it merely means paying attention to how you feel then trying to balance it.

The Pull Up
Many of you will be familiar with these exercises. They are some of the primary movements you first learn when starting out in any form of physical activity.
The pull up is like the holy grail for most people. It’s hard to achieve and extremely hard to progress with, this is why most of us give up. Not only is it beneficial to be able to perform this exercise for its strength benefits but also for improved posture. Performing too many chest dominated exercises will leave you round shouldered giving you bad posture and often, posture related issues.
Both are highly important in every day life, as we use the of these muscle groups for daily tasks… so if you have ever wondered why you see push ups and pull ups in just about every exercise Evidence plan or fitness regimescience it is based Between these two exercises alone you are using the majority because these are the staple exercises for the foundation of the upper body muscle groups. Positioning the Pull Up
Most of us get the positioning of the press up wrong, working more of the shoulders and triceps than the actual chest. This happens when we have our hand placement too high and our elbows turned out too far towards a 90-degree position. Hand Position What can nutritional
Ideally we want our hands placed just outside shoulder width on a bar overhead. The aim of the game here is to:

Elbows should be positioned at a 45-degree angle to ensure chest activation rather than shoulders.

Steeped in history, we ate in the room where the cursed galleon is on display, now encased in a glass case. It's claimed that anyone who cleaned this small wooden ship met a mysterious death, hence the inches of dust it is now covered with.
T
ravellers to the city of Nottingham invariably find their way to this quaint old inn, carved into the rock connected with the labyrinth of sandstone caves at the foot of Nottingham Castle. As its sign says, it truly is “well known throughout the world”, but the very first question every visitor asks inevitably relates to how it came to have such an unusual name. The word “trip” used to mean a stop or rest – so the name of the pub simply means a stop on the way to Jerusalem. This unique pub has real charm. We visited early on a Friday evening and received a really warm welcome. There are plenty of fascinating rooms to sit and enjoy a drink and a meal, including some lovely outdoor spaces. The recent refurbishment has been done sympathetically and the pub has lost none of its charm. The Trip has an eclectic mix of customers including, while we were there, some really enthusiastic Americans. With all the tourist visitors you really feel you are somewhere special. It seems this is also the celebrity pub of choice for those playing at the Arena across the road.
We started with a fish and chip board (£11.49) between us. It was fabulous and plenty for us to nibble on as a starter while we soaked up the atmosphere. Mains were steak frites (£11.49), lamb shank (£13.99), braised beef and bone marrow pie (£10.99) and a steak burger (£9.95). The food was faultless, particular highlights were the rosemary salted fries, proper suet pie and melt in the mouth lamb. One dessert between us was all we could manage (pathetic, I know!) so we opted for a triple chocolate brownie (£4.95) which was served with mint ice cream. Needless to say it vanished within seconds. I rarely do reviews but boy, am I glad I did this one. Fresh food, fantastic value for money, beautiful presentation and lovely staff. This is one trip I will be making again very soon. © Ali Wale

GRAB A KEBAB D
espite the somewhat dubious reputation of the high street “Doner” kebab, there is much more to this delicious style of cooking than a late night snack after an evening in the pub. Kebabs are in their broadest definition, grilled meat dishes and have their origins in Middle Eastern Cuisine. Many, but not all, are cooked on a skewer and may be chicken, lamb or pork, minced or ground meat, fish and vegetables. Traditionally they would also have been made with mutton, beef or goat. Evidence for the cooking of meat on spits or skewers has been found in many archaeological sites across the Middle East,
Turkey and Greece. The word itself comes from Arabic and means simply “roasted meat”. Many parts of the world have their own take on the kebab. I have a real weakness for the Greek gyros, which remind me of so many lovely holidays on the Greek Islands. But from Africa, the Middle East, India and Pakistan there are so many wonderful kebab recipes to try, you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Here’s a few for you to have a go at home, they can be cooked under a grill or in the oven but they are even better if you can do them over a barbeque!
Abby Brennan is a former cafe owner, she now cooks, writes, speaks and blogs about food and food policy. You can find her @greatfoodclub magazine & at fishwifeskitchen.com

Best of Luck for Baxter
A long-term foster ‘lucky black’ cat, is still wishing for a home – and appealing to readers for it! Readers may recall the plight of Baxter, who was rescued in a dreadful state by local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Many months on, the 7-year old appears to have been forgotten about – as other cats have since found homes – and yet he still waits, and waits ... in the hope someone will give him a loving home as the only feline. He was found suffering from cat flu, and though now recovered, is safest homed alone. This beautiful boy is the ideal feline companion, as his fosterer highlights: ‘Baxter meows for fuss and is really affectionate. Why he’s been overlooked is a mystery, and a shame.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Baxter is flea and worm treated, micro-chipped, litter-trained and vaccinated – his new owner is responsible for future vaccinations. Could you be the change in Baxter’s luck? To arrange to meet and for details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. With no premises, animals are fostered in volunteers’ homes. The charity does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www. animalaccident.org.uk.

National charity Guide Dogs is calling for urgent support from dog owners, as latest data reveals an alarming 12 guide dogs are attacked every month on average. In nearly 60% of these attacks the aggressor dog was off the lead. In addition to the emotional and physical trauma of an attack, for the dog and owner, this serious issue has cost the charity over £1.3million since 2010 – the equivalent of 90,000 guide dog leads. The charity has launched a Take the Lead campaign, calling for the public to put their dog on a lead when they see a guide dog working. Canine researchers from the charity say this simple action could be the key to preventing future attacks. Guide Dogs has campaigned on the issue of dog attacks in the past and back in 2014 tougher laws were introduced meaning if your dog attacked an assistance dog you could face up to a three-year jail sentence. However, the charity feels more needs to be done to prevent attacks and is now looking to the nation’s dog owners for support. Attacks on guide dogs can have long-lasting affects for both the dog and owner. For more information about Guide Dogs Take the Lead campaign head over to; www. guidedogs.org.uk/takethelead

Help Your Local Hedgehogs We are a group of passionate volunteers who want to stop the decline in hedgehog numbers and help save one of our best loved British mammals from extinction. We do talks, landsite visits, help with hedgehog rescue,do schools visits, collect newspapers for our local hedgehog rescue centre, raise money and generally help in whatever ways we can. Contact details at the bottom. Here are a few ways in which you can help your local hedgehog population; • Put out a shallow dish of fresh water. • Feed them meat-based dog/cat food. They love unsalted chopped or crushed peanuts, sunflower hearts and dried meal worms. Never give them bread and milk as they can’t digest it. • No single garden is large enough - they need to be linked. A 13cm hole at the base will allow Hogs easy access not only to your garden but also to your neighbours. • Hogs make nests from large deciduous leaves like oak or cherry. Pile up some logs in the corner of your garden – then add fallen leaves. • You can buy or make a Hogitat in your garden for them to use. • Check any piles of wood or garden refuse before burning. • Always provide an exit ramp from garden ponds. • Check your garden before using any garden machinery. • Avoid using pesticides.

Orchard Veterinary Centre Heatstroke
If you see a dog in a hot car displaying any signs of heatstroke, dial 999 immediately as the dog could soon lose consciousness and experience internal organ failure. What is ‘heatstroke’? If dogs are too hot and are unable to reduce their body temperature by panting, they will develop heatstroke which can kill. If a dog is displaying any signs of heatstroke, move them to a cool, shaded area and call a vet immediately. Some types of dog are more prone to heatstroke, like very old or young dogs, dogs with thick, heavy coats or dogs with very short flat faces like pugs and bulldog types. Dogs with certain diseases or on some types of medication are also more at risk.
www.orchard-vets.co.uk
Warning signs of heatstroke: •Is the dog panting heavily? •Is the dog drooling excessively? •Does the dog appear lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated? •Is the dog collapsed or vomiting? Emergency First Aid for dogs For the best chance of survival, dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature lowered gradually. •Move him/her to a shaded/cool area. •Immediately douse the dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place him/her in the breeze of a fan. •Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water. •Continue to douse the dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle but never so much that he/she begins to shiver. Once the dog is cool, take him/her to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency. Orchard Veterinary Group is the trading name of CVS (UK) Limited registered in England and Wales. Summer Reading Challenge 2018: Mischief Makers
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge asks children, aged 4 – 11, to join Dennis, Gnasher and friends on a hunt for Beanotown’s buried treasure. It’s completely free to join. Children read six library books to collect stickers and explore their colourful collector’s map of Beanotown to find clues. But watch out – with Dennis around, some of those stickers are sure to be stinky and he’s bound to be up to all kinds of mischief. Hucknall Library will launch Mischief Makers on Saturday 14 July and between 10-12 you can make your own badge. Dress up as your favourite Beano character and take a selfie with the selfie frame.

Tanya About Town A
s the summer continues, it’s all about food, festivals and outdoor fun in and around Nottingham.
Hart’s restaurant continue with their 20 Years of Love from Hart’s celebrations. Make sure you celebrate the great British summer and join them as they dine alfresco in The Park Bar Courtyard for their BBQ (26 July & 23 Aug). There’s plenty more outdoor dining around the county too. Following the success of last year, The Big Bake returns to Newstead Abbey (25-27 Aug) and foodies will love the Festival of Food & Drink at Clumber Park (15-16 Sep) both events offer great food, the fabulous producers behind the brands and special guest demonstrations or, if you fancy learning the other side of it, the School of Artisan Food at Welbeck are running many courses throughout the summer which teach you how to make your own favourite products from bread to cheese. Let’s hope the Ice Cream course (26 Sep) comes in handy this summer.
We can’t guarantee the sun but we can certainly guarantee the sand as the Nottingham beach continues until 2 September in Market Square. Watching the trams go by not your thing? Then sit yourself down for some outdoor entertainment. Outdoor theatre continues at the beautiful venues of Newstead Abbey and Wollaton Park on selected dates, with Wollaton also hosting their summer nights outdoor film screenings (23 -27 Aug)
Speaking of beautiful venues, if you’re a lover of history and culture, look out for the Heritage Open Days. Discover hidden treasures and enjoy a wide range of free tours, events and activities (6 -9/13-16 September) There’s more family fun guaranteed at Gloworm Festival at Thoresby Park (18 19 Aug), catering for children 0 -13 years, expect creative experiences as well as music, entertainment and theatre production. Nottingham’s annual Riverside Festival takes place 3 - 6 Aug, the city’s biggest unique free festival will cover a mile along the banks of the River Trent at Victoria Embankment and down the road on the Meadows Embankment the vibrant Nottingham Carnival returns (12 Aug) boasting hundreds of show stopping costumes and dancing. Fingers crossed for great weather, but it’s always dry inside Nottingham’s concert halls and theatres. There’s a host of entertainment to choose from. Pop princess Kylie Minogue returns to the Motorpoint Arena (20 Sep) with her Golden Tour whilst Sleaford Mods play the Royal Concert Hall (30 Sep) and there are some great musicals in the diary too with Shrek (11 -23 Sep), Let it Be (11-15 Sep) at the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall and Sweet Charity at the Playhouse (31 Aug - 22 Sep).

free time Hucknall Tourism & Regeneration Group & Hucknall Byron Festival Following on from our preparations for our Free Guided Bus Tours, we are now turning our attention to the forthcoming Hucknall Byron Festival. This year is the 230th anniversary of the birth of Lord George Gordon Byron, 220 years since Byron travelled from Aberdeen to Newstead to claim his inheritance, 30 years since the formation of Newstead Abbey Byron Society and 20 years since the commencement of the Hucknall Byron Festival. This year the festival will run from Friday 6 July through to Sunday 15 July inclusive. In order to celebrate this special year, we are bringing over the Cathedral Choir from Sarzana in Italy. They will perform at St Mary Magdalane's Church in Hucknall, St Mary Magdalene's Church in Newark, as well as Southwell Minster. A special piece of music has been written by Guy Turner of Southwell Minster and this will be debuted during the festival. Several local choirs and Newstead Brass will be uniting with the Sarzana Choir for a grand concert. Further information on the festival will be available once the programme has been finalised. You can find us on facebook: Hucknall Byron Festival, Hucknall Tourism & Regeneration Group and leaflets throughout the town. We look forward to seeing everyone during the festival enjoying many of the events. Hucknall Byron Festival Committee.

Nominate Endangered East Midlands Buildings
The Victorian Society is asking residents in Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands to nominate threatened Victorian buildings for the 2018 Top 10 Endangered Buildings List. Now in its eleventh year, the Victorian Society’s biggest annual campaign encourages people across the UK to nominate Victorian buildings in their area they feel are under threat, whether from neglect, insensitive redevelopment or even demolition. A shortlist of the ten most endangered Victorian buildings in the country is then chosen by our architecture and conservation experts, and the buildings in that list are given valuable publicity that could help save them. Send your nominations either by email to media@victoriansociety.org.uk or by post to The Victorian Society, 1 Priory Gardens, London W4 1TT. Nominated buildings must be in England or Wales, and built between 1837 and 1914, and nominations must contain the building’s name/location, year it was built, brief description of its history and/ or architecture, why you think it should be in the Top 10 i.e. the threat it is under, and at least one good photo. The deadline for nominations is Friday 13th July. It is not a voting system – each nomination is afforded equal weight. The final Top 10 list will be announced on Wednesday 12th September.

Swimming in Hucknall by Maureen Newton Part 1. Early Days Beardsmore records in the History of Hucknall that ‘About the year 1870 the Local Board dammed up the brook that ran through Albert Street Cricket Field and erected a screen for the protection of bathers but in a few years the stream silted up’. Although no documentary evidence has been found there was a place along the brook where bathing could have taken place. (Where the Leisure Centre is now.) In February 1889 Councillor Walter of Papplewick Hall suggested ‘That a cheap and effective bathing place might be made on the banks of the river Leen near Hucknall and anyone taking up the project would do a public service’. Later that year Mr. Jacklin brought up the subject of public baths. He thought ‘Baths were especially necessary in a mining community when perhaps not more that 50 homes had a bath but they were just as much required as the Free Library and would do as much or more good’. In April 1892 a deputation went from the Council to speak to the Duke of Portland’s agent, Mr. Turner, on the subject of baths and washhouses. He wrote later confirming that the Duke had given land on Wigwam Lane for public baths and £100 to the building fund. A year passed before a design was obtained with a quotation for £2000. In 1894 Hucknall Torkard Industrial Provident Society gave £100 to the fund along with the Colliery Company. Until May 1900 nothing appears in the records; then a letter was received by the Council. It was from Bestwood Park Parish Council “As to providing accommodation for bathers in the river Leen and to unpleasantness caused to females passing in the neighbourhood and proposing a liberal subscription for a shed.” (Had there been some skinny dipping?) Anyway the letter seemed to provide fresh impetus for the ‘bathing’ project since a deputation visited Miss Jackson at Broomhill. (Her land reached down to the river.) The Baths Committee were “requested to take the question of bathing accommodation in hand at once”. And there was a letter from Mr. Turner about laying a pipe in the upper Leen to join the stream below the weir for the purpose of feeding the proposed bathing place. A Special Meeting was held in 1901 about the proposed baths. The surveyor submitted a plan and estimate of £1,347 for a building. This however was changed to a plan for an open air baths. Early in 1903 Messrs. Douglas and Moult were to report on the provision of a public swimming baths. Suddenly things began to happen. In 1904 the clerk of the
council read out tenders for the erection of baths in Wigwam Lane:- Jas. Whyatt £153 12s 6d; W. Brown £206; C. Houldsworth £222. Mr. James Whyatt’s tender was accepted. Although there was a proposal to face the baths with white bricks the motion was lost. Hucknall Dispatch reports in April 1904 that “The Councils decision to erect baths for the low price of £153 seems to amuse many people. The question of baths has seen many ups and downs. Ten years ago in 1894 the councillors had great ideas fixing £2000 as the figure but expected money to come in by donations but that would not ‘wash’. Certainly this is a drop from the sublime to the ridiculous”. ‘Captain Webb’ wrote a letter to the Dispatch- “At last the amphibiously inclined of our progressive town will be able to disport themselves in the waters of a ‘Municipal Baths’. Fancy! Baths at £153 – such extravagance takes ones breath away and one can see nothing else before us but a bankrupt town. Strewth!” It was decided to take water from the stream instead of the town main to fill the baths and the contract for erecting the open air baths was sealed in May 1904. At the beginning of June work in connection with the new baths was making rapid progress. Arrangements were not brilliant but considering the lack of funds it was hoped the baths would still provide a boon to the youth of the town. More next time...

The Fifty Something Tale
Re-wind to my 30th birthday. No kids, good job, partying every weekend. Life was a breeze. Then a decade later with two kids and a grown-up house I still felt OK. “life begins at forty”, “fabulous at forty”, and other positive messages abound in my cards. However, approaching the big Five-O there was radio silence...Three years in and I now know why!!!
“You
know you‛re getting old when you look at Scholl sandals and think “my they look comfy”!
”
Victoria Wood
The fifties is a secret club. The first rule of the fifties club is you don’t talk about the fifties. The second rule of the fifties club is you DO NOT talk about the fifties. I have decided to break these rules and share with you some of my tales of getting old.
My moment of clarity occurred at work the other day. Popping to the loo I suddenly felt unreasonably angry and annoyed that I had jeans on - I had to tackle a belt, buttons and a zip, it was all too much for an old gal! Sadly I had to acknowledge that I had passed over to the dark side that is elasticated waistbands. The jegging has become my garment of choice. They hold things in, allow expansion and are easy to get on and off. What’s not to like??? After this depressing realisation, I had to face the fact that things would never be the same again. I began to log incidences of my strange behaviour and then had to stop as it was becoming worryingly regular.
Here are a few of my recent ones. It helps to prefix with “You (meaning me!) know you are getting old when...” ..you put the yogurt in the cupboard rather than the fridge and scarily cannot even recall doing so.
“
Maybe it‛s true that life begins at fifty. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out or spread out. Phyllis Diller
”
..you add screenwash to the washing machine instead of fabric conditioner (sorry boys). ...you get in the shower but forget to take your glasses off. (Screenwash would have been handy in there!!). ...you can’t get off the sofa without making a strange grunting, moaning sound. Men don’t have it any easier either. My other half now has more hair on his back than on his head and is currently pondering the viability of the world’s longest comb-over. Or more like a comb-up-and-over!! However there are advantages to getting older. You qualify for Saga holidays. You no longer care about what anyone else thinks (I refer you back to the jeggings). Saying “no” becomes easier. You can use your kids as a taxi service instead of the other way round. Am I convincing you? No? Me neither!!! © Ali Wale

Review r e t n u h d in M Netflix’s talent-magnet has done it once again and attracted the legendary director David Fincher (The Social Network) to tackle the real life story of John E. Douglas and his time in the FBI’s elite serial crimes unit. A heady depiction of horrific true-story crimes that delves deep into the psychological make-up of the perpetrators, this Netflix show isn’t for the faint of heart, and demands your full attention at all times. Based on a book of the same name, the series follows young and talented agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff, Frozen) and ‘too old for this s*!t’ veteran agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany, Justice League) in the 1970s. With criminal psychology becoming a more crucial part of law-enforcement, Ford and Tench set out to interview the most disturbed criminals of the era to better understand the criminal psyche in the hope of applying this new found knowledge to solving ongoing and future crimes. From the synopsis, the series can sound like a slow, methodical affair, and it is. But the writing of Mindhunter makes it feel like anything but. The psychological dissections of these criminals unveil such interesting and twisted insights into these terrifyingly horrific people that you can’t help but get sucked in and hang on to every word, and every new theory Ford and Tench have to offer. But philosophical delving into human kind can only get a show so far. Without great characters, there’s nothing for the audience to connect with during this journey. Luckily Mindhunter has incredibly written and acted characters too. Every single actor does a phenomenal job. From Cameron Britton’s (Camp Takota) skin crawling performance as serial decapitator and rapist Edmund Kemper, to Anna Torv (Fringe) as academic Wendy Carr whose non-law enforcement point of view brings a new flavour to the crimes unit and gives rise to many interesting ethical
arguments. Each character has a compelling and important place in this fascinating time in the FBI’s history. And that’s without even mentioning the lead partners Ford and Tench. Their bantering buddycop dynamic brings some much needed levity to the heavy subject matter and acts as the tender heart of the show. Just watching the two forced to share a motel room is entertaining, and seeing how such a dark and taxing career effects their own psychology is morbidly fascinating. Overall, Mindhunter is a fascinating journey into the criminal psyche. But not only that, the show has a phenomenal cast and assortment of characters, some terrifying and repulsive, some loveable and entertaining, but all absolutely compelling. Mindhunter = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

How many of you have used the word discrimination to describe a workplace behaviour or as a response to something said to you by a friend or colleague? We all think we know what it means and that there may be some redress if it’s encountered at work, but it may be useful to use this article to define what it means in law. Whilst large multinational companies have HR professionals and legal departments to deal with alleged incidents, many smaller organisations do not. And it’s in these environments that certain behaviours can flourish if not dealt with quickly and efficiently. The characteristics that are protected by the Equality Act 2010 are: • Age • Disability • Gender Reassignment • Marriage or Civil Partnership • Pregnancy and Maternity • Race • Religion or Belief • Sex • Sexual orientation The legislation also protects you if people in your life, like family members or friends, have a protected characteristic and you’re treated unfairly because of that. If you think that you are a victim of any kind of discrimination at work then you should firstly make your management aware. There is a lot of help and advice available to workers who are not union members. The Citizens Advice Bureau is a good source of information (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) as is ACAS (www.acas.org.uk) 0300 123 1100. Never feel you have to suffer in silence. There is always help available.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Summer Holidays School’s out, flights booked, the summer holiday has begun! While you’re on your break away from home whether it is in the UK or abroad, thieves can use this period to take advantage of your empty home. Take a few steps to help keep your home safe while you’re away. Make sure all access points are secured with good quality locks or bolts. Lock all windows and doors and remove keys to a safe place when you leave the house. Don’t leave valuable items such as laptops and jewellery in view of windows and consider leaving important documents and valuable items with other family members while away. Make use of timer plugs with lamps and radios to make your house seem occupied. Try and let a trusted friend or neighbour know that you’re going to be away from home. You could ask a trusted neighbour or friend to collect post, open and close curtains. Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries if you have them. Think before posting statuses or commenting on social media about going on holiday. This could advertise to thieves that you are away. Make sure you have up-to-date contents and buildings insurance.
(ensure screws on latches and hinges cannot be undone easily from the outside) and where possible ensure that they are alarmed. Finally, just before you actually set off it’s worth allowing a quiet couple of minutes on the doorstep to check you’ve done all you had to do and taken everything you need with you. Sun, Sea and Safety! When on your holiday, have a great time and follow this advice: As with everything, you are safest where there are other people and where it is well lit so plan your routes. Let someone know where you will be and when you are expected back. Don’t leave bags unattended or pockets open and unzipped. Take extra care in crowded areas as this is where pickpocketing is most likely to take place. Don’t have your home address showing on your luggage for the outward journey, we would advise putting this only on the inside of your cases. Keep note of numbers for the emergency services, the address of where you’re staying and your insurance provider. These could come in handy if you were to have an emergency. For more crime prevention information please visit our website: http://www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice
Ensure that sheds and out-buildings are locked and secured. Use good quality locks on garages and sheds
