Preparing For Interview
by Helen Jones
The UK economy is forecast to grow this year with most predictions running well above 2%. As the employment market becomes increasingly fluid the opportunity for interview becomes much more likely. There are many things that can be done to maximise the potential for success when connecting with a possible employer. In any situation preparation is key as the lack of it can seriously inhibit self-confidence. Before any type of interview give yourself plenty of time to • Research the role and the organisation – think about how your experience and skills fit the job and company ethos • Anticipate the questions you may be asked – prepare answers • Find out how the interview will be conducted e.g. single, panel, group Many employers will screen candidates by telephone initially. When preparing for this type of interview it’s important to consider: • Your tone of voice – be enthusiastic and use positive language • Battery life – charge your mobile fully before the interview • Location – find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed At a face to face interview it’s imperative that you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons by ensuring: • You arrive on time or better still, early • You are organised. Take along your application, CV and examples of work ( if appropriate)with you • You listen carefully to the questions and answer concisely • Your body language is confident and outgoing. It’s a proven fact that non-verbal communication is an important factor when considering applicants • You have practised the points that you want to get across. Build your confidence by hearing yourself speak before the actual meeting Time and time again we encounter candidates who have represented themselves poorly at interview because they did not get the basics right before attending. It is imperative that you • Plan the day of the interview, especially the journey. Take cash in case you need to take Invite you to join them a taxi or bus unexpectedly, carry an A-Z map on the 4th Tuesday of every month or put the destination postcode into Google 7.30pm - 9.30pm at maps on your mobile to prevent getting lost Wollaton Park Community Centre, • Decide beforehand what to wear and set Harrow Rd, Wollaton, NG8 1FG it out the night before – clean and pressed. Suits and business wear are the best option Admission is £1 which includes with clean, polished shoes refreshments. • Get an early night – it makes sense! Whatton, twinned with Finland? The Cranmer Company of Singers, which rehearses in Whatton, is putting on a special concert with The Vanaja Chamber Choir from Finland. This exciting collaboration came about because while living locally and working as an au pair, Taru Perolta sang with the Cranmer Singers. Now Deborah Davies, their Musical Director, is welcoming Ismo Savimake and his choir all the way from Finland to the Vale of Belvoir. The two choirs will be performing in a unique concert on Saturday 7 June 2014, starting at 7.30pm. The beautiful parish church of Bottesford will be filled with delightful sounds – a varied programme, mixing sacred and secular, with organ and piano, and likely to include the combined choirs singing firm favourite Zadok the Priest (Handel), and royal wedding choice I Was Glad (Parry). Ismo is planning to take the audience on a journey from Finland to Engand through Sweden, Norway and Estonia – rare treats, plus parts of the hauntingly lovely Stabat Mater by Karl Jenkins. Ticket price: £8 adults, £5 children and those on income related benefits, to include a glass of wine/ juice at the interval. It is wise to book in advance by phoning 01949 850364, though they may be available on the door. Cranmer Company of Singers have engagements in Winchester, York and Spain this summer as well as being booked to sing at a few local weddings
Music For Everyone invites young people to sing at the Albert Hall, Nottingham! Nottingham based music charity, Music For Everyone, will be hosting inspiring singing workshops for primary school children on the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, with an exciting concert in Nottingham’s prestigious Albert Hall on Sunday 18 May. The singing course and concert called Vocals, due to take place at Nottingham Trent University & the Albert Hall, Nottingham, is open to all singers aged 5 – 12. Conductor Helen Hayes said “Our Vocals courses are really good fun and a great introduction to singing. We invite
any young people interested, to come along and give it a try! This time we will be singing great songs for all ages including songs from Matilda the Musical, Jack and the Beanstalk (a musical inspired by the ‘Revolting Rhymes’ written by Roald Dahl) and for very young singers The Three Billy Goats Gruff!” It is a great event for beginners because they have plenty of time to rehearse before Vocals with the music resources we post out before the event. It also gives our returners the opportunity to build on their past experience.

Notts TV’s about to make history The building of Nottingham Castle, the planting of the Major Oak, when Torvill & Dean won Gold and when the mighty Forest won the European cup; Nottingham’s about to add another momentous date to its line-up. Tuesday the 27th of May 2014 marks a massive milestone for Nottingham; for the first time in history, you’ll be able to tune in to a brand new local TV station. A TV station dedicated to all things Notts. Broadcasting on Freeview Channel 8, Notts TV is part of the biggest move in British media in a generation; the creation of a brand new network across the UK. Operating seven days a week Notts TV will bring you daily News, Sport and Weather, as well as a range of quality programmes from music and comedy, to history and documentary. Unlike any other channel, Notts TV’s all about where you live, and what matters right here. From Arnold to Aspley, Bulwell to Chilwell, you don’t have to share Channel 8 with Leicester and Derby! With an investment of over £1m on technical infrastructure, the venture marks a return to large scale programme making in Nottingham, while the Channel’s city based news studio is being equipped with state of the art technology. As well as the Nottingham Trent University base, Notts TV also operates out of its HQ at Confetti Media Group’s Antenna building and alongside their partners; Nottingham Post and Inclusive Digital. While the Notts TV news team prepares for broadcasting 90mins of news a day, the production team are busy shooting a variety of programmes ready for launch.
Channel Director Jamie Brindle explains more about one of the most exciting things to happen to Nottingham: “ We’re lucky to be working with some really talented people; household names that bring a strong fan base with them”, he says. “BBC favourites - Frances Finn and Becky Sheeran join us as Presenters and we’re pleased to announce that our team of talented Video Journalists have come from a variety of successful media outlets across the UK.” Some of the brightest student journalists from Nottingham Trent University’s Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism will also be involved in the station during their final year of study or through placements. “In the next few weeks and months, you can expect to see our campaign hitting Nottingham,” says Jamie. “From online to outdoor and direct mail to bus advertising, we hope you’ll say ‘Ey up’, when you see us.“ For the latest information about Notts TV, visit the website at www.nottstv.com follow Notts_TV on Twitter or become a fan on facebook at www. facebook.com/NottsTV Fans and followers can get involved in the conversation around Notts TV and suggest their ideas for potential programmes. In addition to this, potential advertisers and sponsors can see their brand beamed directly into homes across Nottinghamshire, allowing for really targeted campaigns. “It’s very exciting,” finishes Jamie. “We have so many things planned for Notts TV and we want the whole of Notts to be a part of it.”

Street Pastors Help More Than 10,000 In Nottingham Nottingham’s Street Pastor scheme has reached a new milestone after helping over 10,000 people across the city. Run from the Malt Cross on St James’ Street, up to 12 volunteer Street Pastors can be found in the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights. They are on hand to help those whose nights out have not gone quite to plan.

Classic Thriller Season
will be at the Theatre Royal from 28 July - 23 August For tickets and info: www.trch.co.uk/ 0115 989 5555 All correct answers will be entered into a draw. Winners will be notified by Monday 21 July 2014. The tickets are for the 7.30pm performances on 28 July.
New figures show that during the past four years the Street Pastors have: • Spoken to 10,205 members of the public. • Handed out 2,669 bottles of water. • Picked up 10,675 broken bottles from the streets of Nottingham. • Administered first aid to 513 people. • Used 524 space blankets to help keep revellers and homeless individuals warm. • Given out 2,263 pairs of flip-flops to those who have lost their shoes or are unable to walk in the ones they are wearing. • Helped 91 people get home by paying for a taxi. As Jo reveals, there is potential for the scheme to get even bigger: “As well as our operations in the city centre, Street Pastors have also started working within estates in the city suburbs too. We would love to be able to expand our services even further to offer support on more nights of the week and also at major local events such as music festivals. “With this in mind, we’d like to hear from anyone interested in volunteering as a Street Pastor. We’ll be working with our new volunteers to provide the necessary training from 24 May, so now is the perfect time to get in touch and help make a difference.” For more on the Malt Cross Trust and the Street Pastors scheme, visit www.maltcross.com. To express interest in volunteering as a Street Pastor, email streetpastors@maltcross.com.

A message from positively-perfect puss Archie A local animal charity is championing the rewards of adopting loving but overlooked cats. One such cat, rescued thanks to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is six year old Archie (pictured). Found existing on Nottingham’s streets, Archie was in a bad state with a painful facial abscess - but following dedicated care is now fit and healthy. As with all the charity’s cats, Archie was FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) tested. As he tested positive, he and the charity are taking this opportunity to explain FIV – with the aim that he and others can enjoy new homes. As an experienced volunteer explains: ‘FIV should definitely not be confused with FeLV (Feline Leukaemia); they’re two entirely different viruses. They’re mentioned together as vets test for both together, but whilst FeLV affects health and lifespan, FIV most certainly does not.’ FIV depletes white blood cells numbers, eventually making the cat less able to fight off infection. As the charity, which rescues many FIV-positive cats, emphasises however: ‘FIV is extremely slow-acting. These cats can enjoy a completely normal lifespan with no arising health problems. The only need is that as it’s solely transmitted between cats, FIV-positive cats are kept indoors, and only homed with other such positive cats.’ Archie is a most friendly cat and is hoping someone will see beyond his FIV-status to the affectionate, healthy boy he is! He is neutered, micro-chipped, flea and worm treated and littertrained. To share your life with Archie, ring 01159984307 (only to be used for Archie enquiries), leaving a message with your postcode and contact details, or email admin@aaru.org.uk. For other enquiries email as above or call 01159321555 including offering cat fostering - which the charity urgently needs.

Honouring the centenary of WWI, a new show at Nottingham Playhouse called “Bolero” brings together the stories of Torvill & Dean’s gold-medal performance, the music that inspired it and the explosive events that began the war. Other shows on this theme include the tale of a soldier from the Sherwood Forresters regiment and a youth production of All Quiet on the Western Front.
The National Gardens Scheme Gardens Open For Charity May has a lot to offer garden lovers in Nottinghamshire. The gardens have awoken from their winter slumbers and are offering exceptional visions of colour, perfume, textures and in some cases sounds. Take the opportunity to visit one of more of the local treasures and whilst doing so support The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) in raising money for good causes such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Help the Hospices. All NGS gardens are inspiring and enjoyable places to visit, ranging from small back gardens to spacious country ones. They will appeal to keen gardeners and casual visitors alike: everyone will enjoy and benefit from the beauty and peace of a lovingly tended garden. 7 COLLYGATE : Swingate, Kimberley, NG16 2PJ - Opening Monday 5th May 1pm to 5pm. Are you thinking of booking your next holiday? Then let me introduce myself, I’m Samantha from Designer Travel. Ever dreamed of sipping champagne whilst watching the sunset over Ayres Rock, swimming with Reef sharks on The Great Barrier Reef or scaling Sydney Harbour Bridge.?........well, there is no time like the present to start planning that trip of a life time to Australia. The Australian dollar offers an excellent conversion against the pound which means you will have more money to spend. Australia has to be one of my favourite countries, having spent a length of time working and travelling there. I feel I really got to understand the geography and the infrastructure of the country and learnt lots about the people who lived there. You may only have 2-3 weeks to spare or maybe you are planning on staying for months, one thing you can be sure of is that you will
have the holiday of life time and some magical experiences that are assured to last forever. Australia as a country is so diverse in what it has to offer the traveller .... If you love the buzz of a city its hard to choose between for example Sydney or Melbourne. Sydney has an amazing skyline, with The Harbour Bridge and Opera house, plus its vibrant night life & Melbourne offers its quaint trams that take you around the city, you can also visit areas like St Kilda with its arty vibe and cafe culture. If you are visiting in February why take in the Australian Tennis Open ? For those of you who love the water , its a must to dive or snorkel The Great Barrier Reef or if you prefer to keep dry why not try a few days sailing around the beautiful tropical Whitsunday Islands? There are 74 of them to choose from.
Beaches & surfing are a way of life in Australia. Grab a beer or milk shake and watch the surfers catching the waves, it really is amazing to watch ! The wild life is so varied & interesting and you have the opportunity to see first hand some of the amazing wildlife at the many sanctuaries, or on a rainforest tour and boat trips are also popular. My favourite experience was going to Phillip Island and sitting in the dunes and watching the famous Fairy penguins pop up out of the sea and come and nest in the dunes, they waddle past like you aren’t there! I could go on forever. So what are you waiting for ? Get planning that trip of a life time...

KILLER FILLERS
In a previous life I used to own a sandwich bar and we always made all our sandwich fillings from scratch. Here are some of the best sellers. These would make great fillers for jacket spuds, cobs, wraps, salad bowls and of course sandwiches.
Coronation Chicken
1 chicken small onion - finely chopped 1tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric 2 tbsp tomato puree 5 tbsp red wine 1 lemon - rind & juice 2 tbsp apricot jam ¾ pint mayo
Poach the chicken. Once cooked & cooled strip meat from bones. Gently fry the onion in some oil. When soft add all the spices and tom puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, lemon rind & juice. Cook for 5 mins. Add the jam and leave to cool. When cool - strain and then mix with the mayo and pour over the chicken. Mushroom Paté
Corned Beef Crunch
200g tin corned beef ½ red pepper - diced 2” cucumber - diced 1 stick celery - diced ¼ red onion - diced 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp horseradish sauce black pepper
Mash the corned beef up with a fork. Mix with all the vegetables. Mix the mayo & horseradish and stir into the mix. Season to taste. The crunch mix works well with tuna, cheese and cream cheese.
200g mushrooms - sliced 1 small onion - chopped 15g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic - chopped small bunch parsley 1 tbsp sherry 200g cream cheese grated nutmeg, salt & pepper, lemon juice

Help Wanted to Put Notts Brownies in the Picture Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is looking for help to build a library of pictures covering 100 years of Brownies across the county. This year marks the centenary of the formation of Brownies, which is the section of Girlguiding specifically for girls aged 7-10. Activities to mark the milestone are taking place all over the UK and one of the projects here in Nottinghamshire is to compile a digital photo-album showing Brownies in action over the decades. The pictures will also be used to support news stories about the Brownies’ celebrations, and the best ones will be sent to ITV Central News for a feature later in the year. ‘We’re asking people to scour their attics and old photograph albums to find archive pictures of local Brownies and their leaders,’ says Aspley Guide Leader Kayleigh Hunt, who is managing the project for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The pictures should be scanned and sent to us by e-mail, accompanied by brief details as to who’s in the picture and when or where it was taken. The images will be added into our Big Brownie Photo-Album, creating a unique record of Brownies in Notts.’ K a y l e i g h stresses that she is not asking for treasured original photographs to be sent in. ‘We need digital files only, preferably jpgs,’ she says. ‘But anyone without access to a scanner is welcome to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help get their pictures added to our album!’ Images and queries should go to Kayleigh Hunt at pr@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org. uk

Michael Gove Visits Edgewood Primary & Nursery School On Friday 14th March Edgewood Primary and Nursery School was pleased to host a visit to our school by Michael Gove MP, the Secretary of State for Education. Mark Spencer, our local constituency MP, had arranged the visit following his visit just before Christmas. After a short meeting with the head, Mr Seeley, and the chair and vice chair of governers, Louisa Clarke and Paul James, Mr Gove and Mr Spencer went on a tour of the school.
On his tour Mr Gove visited classes and spoke to children about their learning and even joined in with reading the Gruffalo with Ella in Blue class. After the whistle-stop tour, school council then asked Mr Gove and Mr Spencer some questions about their roles as constituency MP and Secretary of State for Education. The children asked questions such as “How do you formulate policy?”, “How much time do you spend in parliament?” and “What qualifications you need to be an MP?” After interviews with the press our visitors left and praised the school for the rapid improvements they have made over the past two years. They also thanked and praised the children for welcoming them so warmly.

The Little Mermaid - Another Great Performance by The National Academy Pupils
This year's drama production at The National Academy maintained the high standard set in previous years. Here, some pupils who were in the show tell us what it felt like to be in the spotlight. Peter Cable The National Academy has given me many opportunities. Being in the production has been an incredible experience; it has been filled with smiles, energy and many challenges along the way. From auditions to final night, the entire production has been unbelievable. It has been a chance to act and sing on stage, but the audience do not see everything. Being able to interact with the many cogs of this production has taught me a lot about theatre, an area I will study in college. The band has been fantastic, all depending on Miss Wray, who dedicated a lot of her time to developing the band and the many different singers. The choreography was lovingly crafted to fit well with the complexity of an “in the round” stage. With the amount of time we all dedicated, it was still a sudden surprise when we had only two weeks before the show. With so many finishing touches and minor technical difficulties to conquer, we all had a lot of extra work to put in. But in the end we were all happy with the final shows. The first show was tense; however the buzz at the end of the show was all I needed to know that it had been a success. The other shows were equally as emotional and by the end of it we were all trapped between the happiness of completing the show and upset that it was over. The cast and crew really did become like a family, supportive and caring and the memories of this show will stick with me forever.

Abigail Newsome This year’s production was the Little Mermaid and it was the best performance I have ever been in. We started the rehearsals in October after the week of casting and practised until the day before the performance. It was hard work but the
end performance was all worth it. The teachers worked none stop and with our best band ever the show really stepped up this year. The whole cast worked as one unit and welcomed newcomers into this little community. This is the third production I have done with school and I believe that this year had the best cast that I have experienced. The end performances showcased all our hard work and the gifted students were able to work to their best ability. I am planning to take part in next year’s production and I am optimistic about making new friends. Hopefully, next year’s production will be as good as The Little Mermaid. Left to right : James Michael, Max Wade, Duncan Stagg, Ben Millward
Duncan Stagg The annual school productions are great fun but are hard work and require commitment in a fun kind of way, with everyone either learning new skills or developing current ones. The cast learn to work together and on their own; hopefully producing a harmonious and entertaining whole. The commitment and hard work from teachers and staff is an inspiration and example to all who take part. It suddenly becomes apparent that there are many more contributors than just those in front of the audience; musicians, technicians, stage hands and front of house team, without these fantastic teams of people the show could not possibly be as organised; run as smoothly or look and sound as amazing as it does year after year. Certainly one of the most exciting times during the productions is in the final week when the stage is erected and all the various parts start to come together and take shape for the performances. Eve Dobson Each night the performances got better and better as the new cast found their feet. They all rose to the challenge of performing in the round. The week was a huge success and the hard work put in by everyone definitely paid off.
Ella’s Teen Talk:
Handling Friends
They say that you can’t choose your family, but what about your second family? What about the family that you spend every ‘working’ day of Ella Higginbotham aged 16 the week with? This family can definitely be your own personal pick and for lots of us it takes many years to perfect; swapping and changing friendship groups in primary school and ending up with a new best friend every day. However in our teenage years we seem to have grown out of this and we all have friends that are there to stay- our second family. I am lucky enough to have found a group that are as wacky as me. You can’t have friends that don’t understand your weird ways (and you of course have to trust them to not tell everyone else these weird ways!). I see some friendship groups that constantly argue over silly things and it’s impossible to keep up with who is friends with who or who took who’s side- it must be exhausting! If you can’t stick with your friends for longer than a week without some sort of dispute then maybe they aren’t your ‘best friends for life’ after all. With the stress of school and families that some teens have to live with, a solid friendship group is needed for that support and release when you just need a laugh! In secondary schools, everyone always pictures the stereotypical friendship divide: the nerds, the jocks, the popular group. But is that realistic? Are we living in ‘Mean Girls’? Maybe to some extent but in the big picture, we are all just sleepy teenagers that turn up to school and complain together about being there. The biggest stereotypical problem is that you can barely walk down the corridor with a member of the opposite sex without being attacked with wolf whistles and questions about if you are a new couple. Sure, some people tease, but really, after five years in school, they should have realised that you Next are not a new couple and just friends! Basically, friends can torment you sometimes but that’s what they’re there for! Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was serious the whole time; that doesn’t appeal to me! If you can’t have a laugh with and get support from your friends then what is the point?!

Who are you trying to please? We all seek approval, wanting to be shown praise, appreciated and commended on the things we achieve and accomplish in our lives. Do you find yourself trying to please people, always putting others first to the detriment of yourself? We are taught to treat others as we would want to be treated. Does this then, give permission for the sacrificing of ourselves, our health, welfare and emotional wellbeing? - Perhaps not! What and where are you seeking approval? So often our lives become a reflection of the places we spend time, people we are surrounded by and the habits we have created. So when can addiction to approval begin? Sometimes we cannot remember where it all began, but all of a sudden we are hooked! Our awareness of addictions is usually around substances that we ingest, inject or inhale. However, we can also dull our senses, by becoming so fixed on having this part of us fulfilled until it drives us and takes control, of most, aspects of our lives. It can present itself, through pleasing family, or being overloaded at work, by always having to be the one to organise, fix and create things. In our friendships, it is reflected by becoming responsible for addressing needs, keeping everyone happy and being what everyone else, wants you to be! So how do we come off this merry go-round that ends up disabling us, restricting our thoughts, our actions, our purpose; limiting our personalities and manipulating our character? Where is it getting us and what are we getting from it? The reality is that we do get something from it! Every behaviour has a specific intention, whether good or bad, and has a payoff, of some sort. This payoff though, does not
result in great long term investment returns; instead it can leave us bereft, unfulfilled, dulling our senses and bewildered, as to who or what we are! Becoming more and more suppressed, trampled on and feeling like a hamster on a wheel- going no where! However we do have choices and when we become aware of this place we find ourselves in, we can begin taking steps to get off, and little by little, begin to choose a different path. Pleasing and loving are two different things. Love incorporates care, value and respect. Trying to please can be to the detriment of your health, sanity and own needs, which does not represent love, quite the opposite! Sometimes we need to love ourselves enough to say no. We create the situation of taking, so if we give differently, it enables others to take accordingly. Setting boundaries around what, when and how much, we can do for others, speaks and says “I am honouring and valuing myself”, which inevitably gets reflected back by others. When we can honestly answer this, we can proceed forward to identify the process of change, beginning with where it is impacting you the most. Why? Well, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain, especially self worth. So offer yourself a taste of it today, get used to the flavour and practice, until it becomes the new part of you. Do what you say? Well- rid yourself of trying to please everyone else, and start taking YOU into account for a change. You may say it’s viewed as selfish! No. It’s viewed as loving yourself! Now that too, is also important. © Helen Cyrus-Whittle Women’s Personal Life Coach Tel: 07746 813520 www.womenslifecoaching.co.uk

from your neighbourhood team.. The longer days and warmer weather makes us think about the summer holidays. But this year, as we look forward to a season of sport with the World Cup, don’t let crime kick off. As the days heat up and the evenings stay light the trips to the pub tend to increase. A quick pint after work, a few drinks in the beer garden on a Sunday afternoon, a pub dinner with the family. And of course we have some late nights coming up with the football. But don’t score an own goal by losing control. Drink in moderation and walk away from confrontation. Your judgement can be skewed under the influence of alcohol. Don’t lose your cool. Remember, we don’t hand out red cards, we deal in jail terms when it comes to violence. Also net a winner against thieves by making sure your house and vehicle doors and windows are secure at all times. It’s tempting to leave your windows open when you nip to the shop, or the back door unlocked as you lounge on the lawn. A thief can be in and out in minutes and the first you’ll know of the intrusion is your car missing from the drive or your laptop gone from the table. Tackle thieves by making sure valuables are out of sight. Even something as innocuous as a coat or lunchbox on the back seat of your car could be enough for an opportunist. They don’t care if it puts them off-side.
Lock up; Don’t leave valuables on display, including electrical cords; and Report suspicious or unusual activity around homes and vehicles to police on 101 or 999 if a crime is taking place. Call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Remember, if you’re taking a trip to an unfamiliar place this summer, revise your defence strategy and read up on the Park Mark approved car parks which are an estimated 50 times safer than parking on the street. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of those odds? Follow this simple advice and blow the final whistle on criminals this summer. Remember to catch us at road show events across the county over the next few months, where you can get the upper hand on security by picking up some crime prevention advice from our officers. Visit our website for more details. Don’t forget you can follow us on Twitter @NottsPolice, as well as like us on Facebook. You can also receive news of crime trends and incidents in your area by signing up to Nottinghamshire Alert at: www.nottinghamshirealert.co.uk
