Toby asks; “Will you take me home?” This month’s fantastic feline, rescued by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is appealing to readers for a home: “Hello, I’m Toby, about 8 years old and a happy, long-haired tabby boy. My fosterer says I’m a friendly lap cat, relaxed with new people, play like a kitten - but that my favourite place is a warm lap!” Toby has been waiting a while for a home, so if this could be with you, contact the Adoption Officer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm. This number must not be used for any other enquiry or emergency. Alternatively, email this volunteer at admin@aaru.org.uk – who will reply as soon as possible.

To become a fosterer contact your local Jerry Green Dog Rescue Centre & make a difference on 01623 792 886. TexT To DonaTe faCiliTy

“all you have to do is text JGDR20 and the amount you would like to give to 70070 eg JGDR20 £2”.

As with all the charity’s cats, Toby is ready to move in: having been “snap” blood-tested for FIV/FeLV at the vet – for which he is negative/clear. He is worm and flea-treated, neutered, micro-chipped, litter trained plus vaccinated – though his new owner needs to continue his annual vaccinations. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should call, leaving a detailed message, for the volunteer telephone operators on 0115-9321555. For details on volunteering, fostering or the lovely animals awaiting homes visit www. animalaccident.org.uk.

You As A Brand

Giggle Computers When considering your future, think of yourself as a product. You are trying to sell your expertise and skills to companies. It will be harder to convince someone to buy a product when its packaging is haphazard and sloppy. It is the same with yourself – maintaining a professional image is key. Things to consider: • What you wear – Maintaining a smart appearance is not only useful in creating a good first impression, but can also boost your confidence. • Your body language – Even if you are shaking with nerves, try to disguise it. Giving the appearance of confidence is more important than actually being confident. • Your speech – Try to keep your voice calm and controlled and don’t accidentally interrupt or talk over anyone else. • Email Addresses – It is extremely important to have a professional email address. Email addresses such as ‘poopsy@…’ and ‘missbabyface@…’ (both real life examples…) are inappropriate for anything professional. Create a separate professional email account if necessary. Something simple like ‘firstname.surname@…’ or a variation of this is best. When is this relevant? • Online – Employers are now using social media to browse the lives of interviewees so think about whether a post may come back to haunt you before you put it on there! • Interviews – Both telephone and face to face. Even when conducting telephone interviews (which many employers do in the first instance) you should be dressed as if you were in the same room. This will help you get into the moment and react professionally. Think of it as a method actor – playing the part of an assured, experienced professional.

New Text Messaging Service People living and working in three rural areas of Nottinghamshire can now receive news, information and appeals from their local police team straight to their mobile phone, thanks to a new text messaging pilot launched this month. Anyone living in the Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood areas can register to receive free text message alerts from officers about issues affecting their area, including information about recent incidents and advice to help them avoid becoming victims of crime. Nottinghamshire Police have launched the pilot thanks to funding provided by the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping. Mr Tipping said: “Many people living and working in rural areas struggle to receive information from their local police in a timely enough way to be able to protect themselves as they are so heavily reliant on unstable mobile internet connections to access information online, through social media and by email.

closer to the communities they serve and improving how they let local people know about the work being done to tackle rural crime in their area.” The pilot will be run using the Neighbourhood Alert community messaging system which Nottinghamshire Police already use to share information via email with tens of thousands of residents and businesses across Nottinghamshire. How to register Anyone in Nottinghamshire can register to receive free email and text message alerts from Nottinghamshire Police by visiting www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ alert There is no cost for receiving alerts by either text message or email and anyone registering will have complete control over what kind of information they receive, how often they receive it and whether they also receive alerts from other organisations using Neighbourhood Alert in Nottinghamshire.

“This new text messaging service will allow Nottinghamshire Police to share information with thousands of local people at the click of a button, bringing officers Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? Magazines is 10 Still going strong and getting stronger thanks to all our advertisers, readers and contributors. It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago that we started ng magazines, or ‘ng5’ as we were known back then!!

With us from the start... “I set up my business at the same time as ng mags and have been with them right from the start. They have been the best form of advertising for me, and the staff are always friendly and ready to help, such a useful magazine”. Mark Maggs - All Weathers Plumbing

“I met Cat & Ali 10 years ago when our business manager at the bank introduced us. They have always been good to me and I get a lot of customers from the mags. Some have been with me the whole 10 years and I’m still getting regular ones now” Andy Crowley - AKJ Contracts.

10 years of helping local businesses, providing a service to our readers and supporting the local community, it has been an amazing journey. We started distributing the ng5 in Arnold in May 2006 to 5000 homes and businesses, and I mean distributing - we used to post all the mags ourselves in the early days. This would be impossible now because we deliver 8 magazines to 93,000 so rely on a lot of our readers who have become distributors for us. We would like to say a great big thank you to all our readers, distributors, contributors and advertisers, without whom this would not have been possible.

A FAMILY OF HEALERS by Maureen Newton People in Hucknall heard on Friday 22nd January 1897 of the death of one of the foremost men of the town. Expressions of regret were heard from everyone when it was known that Mr. Zachariah Green had died. There were few households that did not owe the man a debt of gratitude for pain alleviated and health restored by his kindly services. Zachariah lived his whole life in Hucknall. He was baptised in the parish church on 6th May 1817 son of Richard and Sarah Green. His father was a framework knitter who enlisted in his young days and during his military career was called upon to act as hospital orderly. This was a vocation for which he showed such remarkable aptitude that the army surgeons were loth to part with him. When he returned to Hucknall and his trade the knowledge he had picked up in the hospitals proved useful to his neighbours who came to see him concerning cases of minor infections and accidents. His son Zachariah appeared to inherit this aptitude for the same work and added to the knowledge from his father by studying books. He was remarkably intelligent, possessed acute reasoning faculties and his life may be said to have been one long study to kill pain and restore health. Thirty years before in 1866 local people wanted to recognise his goodness and a testimonial in the form of an illuminated parchment was raised to him which hung on his cottage wall. It read: “At a public meeting held in the National Schoolroom, July 25th, 1866, a purse containing 45 guineas was presented to Mr. Zachariah Green by the inhabitants of the village and its vicinity, in recognition of the quiet, unpretentious, and valuable services rendered by him to the suffering portion of the community. Chairman: William Needham Ball, Esq., Treasurer: John Edward Ellis, Esq., Committee: James Widdowson, John Piggin, John Widdowson, William Granger, jun., Thomas Hardy, George Betteson, P. Howis, John Pickup, J. Cartledge, Robt. Widdowson, C. Palmer, Joseph Howitt. Secretary: F.J. Phelps.” As the years rolled by people flocked to the humble cottage in Beardall’s Lane (top picture) and every morning in the week vehicles of every

description from the well appointed landau, to the colliers trap, brought patients to him besides others who had come by road and rail. Scores of people whose disease had been pronounced hopeless were restored to health or their suffering eased. All the Hucknall doctors bore him goodwill. He was diffident in manner incredibly modest in his charges and many strangers were amazed that after lengthy treatment he would say a copper or two would satisfy him but often his patients gave him much more than he asked. The funeral was set for Monday afternoon and at 3pm, the funeral cortege, which included five carriages started from the well known house with the great and good of Hucknall heading the procession. The shops were closed and the blinds drawn in many houses en route to the church where the Rev. A.H. Clarke, M.A., conducted the service. Sunshine broke through the fleeting banks of snow clouds during the time the mourners stood by the graveside but another blizzard broke over the scene. The inscription on the polished oak coffin read “Zachariah Green, died 22nd January 1897, aged 79 years.” Mr. Wm. Hanson was the undertaker and Mr. Wilmott supplied the carriages. Many people were exceptionally pleased that Zachariah’s eldest son Samuel was being trained to continue the work under Dr. Stafford at Nottingham University College. After Samuel other members of the Green family followed in Zachariah’s footsteps. As I write the monument to Zachariah - and his family is being refurbished due to requests from ‘The Friends of Titchfield Park’. (bottom picture) Originally subscriptions to pay for the memorial were made by the people of Hucknall. The District Council granted a site for it to be erected on Hucknall Market Place in 1899 but it was moved to the Titchfield Park location in 1929. Note: Beardall Street used to be Beardall’s Lane and still is to many of the older population.

Go Al Fresco! Summer has finally arrived and it’s time to head out for bit of al fresco dining. Who doesn’t love a picnic or “pique-nique” as it first appeared in the 1692 edition of the “Origines de la Langue Française”. The piquenique was a kind of French version of the “bring your own” style meal, with everyone contributing a course or wine. The first reference in English in 1748, suggested the “picnic” was a meal eaten outdoors but a more elegant affair than the traditional farm-worker’s meal eaten during a break from the harvesting. Whatever its origins,

most of us can’t resist the lure of a sunny afternoon in the park or by the river. The challenge for us, of course, is the Great British summer weather. As soon as the sun comes out and the grass is dry enough to sit on, we need to be ready to seize the moment, grab the picnic rug and head out. Take a break from the traditional cheese & pickle and meat-paste sandwich staples and try one of these really simple, but a bit special, picnic suggestions to make the most of those fleeting summer days.

Abby Brennan is a café-owner, food writer, speaker and small/start-up food-business mentor. You can find her blog at fishwifeskitchen.com

Picnic Sandwich Loaf This is one of my favourite picnic sandwiches, inspired by the young Irish singer and foodie, Donal Skehan. It is a bit more effort than your usual butty but well worth it (amount of filling does depend on the size of your loaf!) 1 long ciabatta loaf, sliced in half lengthways Handful of baby spinach leaves Few slices of roasted red pepper from a jar 4 slices prosciutto or Serrano ham Handful of basil Ball of Mozzarella, sliced Half a red onion, finely sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp Dijon mustard Slice the ciabatta loaf in half lengthways, brush with olive oil on the cut surface and place, crust side down, under a hot grill for a few minutes until slightly browned and lightly toasted. Put the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and mustard in a bowl, then whisk them together until combined. Drizzle the bottom slice with about half the dressing and then arrange the rest of the ingredients in layers, starting with the spinach and red onion. Drizzle over the rest of the dressing

and place the other half of the ciabatta on top. Press down on the sandwich to squash all the layers together, wrap in greaseproof paper or baking parchment and tie it together with string. If you have something suitable to place on top for half an hour (I used a heavy wooden chopping board) that helps to stop the sandwich coming apart when sliced. Cut and serve in slices for the perfect picnic snack

Easy Lamb Koftas If you have a portable BBQ or can find a disposable one, add a hot dish to your picnic with these really simple Koftas. 500g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander Handful of chopped fresh Coriander 3 fat garlic cloves crushed 2 tsps dried Chilli Flakes (or chopped fresh red chillies) 1 tbsp chopped mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper oil for brushing Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and combine well. Divide into 8 balls, then roll each ball on a board to form a sausage shape. Thread onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil. Cook on a hot griddle or on your portable

barbecue for 4/5 mins each side. Ensure the meat is well sealed before turning to ensure they don’t stick to the grill. Serve with natural yoghurt, salad and flatbreads.

Portable Raspberry Ripple Cheesecake How do you transport a cheesecake in a picnic basket? Easy, make it in jar! 150g buttery biscuit (I used Fox’s Butter Crinkles) 150g cream cheese 150g double cream 5 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g raspberries 6 smallish lidded jars (jam jars for example) Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a blender or place in a freezer bag or similar and crush with a rolling pin. Divide the biscuits between the jars. Whisk the cream cheese, cream, 4 tbsp icing sugar and vanilla extract until softly whipped. Tip half the raspberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and purée with a fork. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining raspberries, secure the lids and chill until it’s time to go. Transport in a cool box or bag.

Oaks restaurant and bar is well situated in the heart of Nottingham. They serve simple, locally sourced meat cooked over a wood fired grill, and boy do they do a good job! As you would expect from the name there is an abundance of oak everywhere. From quirky tables and chairs to the walls! Large chandeliers of candles, along with the open flame grill, give this place a really cosy, relaxed feel. Service was friendly and attentive and Marcos, the manager, made sure all the customers were well looked after. This is the second review where the toilets are a must see - must be the new thing! The menu, while not massive, is well chosen. In our opinion, better to have a select few choices but done well, than a huge array of mediocre offerings. To start, we had some lovely quail Scotch eggs and a real beauty, baked Lincolnshire poacher cheese with toast. Despite many attempts, we have been unable to replicate this at home. We followed this with a tasty honeydew beer and black pepper chicken that has clearly been well marinated and king prawns with herbs and chilli which was really impressive. The grilled chicken bites and hand-cooked chips were “like no other chicken we have ever tasted” according to the children - high praise indeed! Even the desserts are made with locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed apple tarte tatin with toffee apple ice cream along with a selection of other delicious ice creams.

Liquid refreshments are chosen with equal care. There is a great selection of craft beers and for all those cocktail lovers out there, the restaurant’s range of unique cocktails is available for just £4.50 each between Monday and Friday – happy days! OAKS also has several other offers during the week. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays diners can enjoy Rump Day – an 8oz Sirloin steak, handcooked chips and a glass of wine for £13.50. Diners on Saturdays can soak up the weekend from 12pm till 4pm with Bottomless Brunch, a choice of tasty brunch options with the option of unlimited Bloody Mary or Prosecco. The restaurant also offers a special Sunday roast menu, where kids eat free and meals start from £10. With live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there are lots of reasons to give this place a go. Great quality food, bubbles, beer and a brilliant atmosphere – what’s not to like?

WOODTHORPE SINGERS very

warmly welcomes new members, of all abilities. No auditions, no need to be able to read music. We sing a variety of light classical music and show songs. Rehearsals are in St Mark’s Church Hall, De Vere Gardens, Woodthorpe on Mondays 8.00 -9.30pm., weekly, term time only, culminating in a fund raising Concert for a chosen charity and a social evening for our members. For more information please ring our Musical Director Marjorie Rogers on 0115 9313965

Carlton Male Voice Choir

We have the Flint MVC coming on 16th July for a joint concert with us at St. Paul's Church, Carlton and on the 23rd July we are singing at the Bonnington Theatre on High Street Arnold for the Mayor's Charity.

Bingham and District Choral Society Following our Spring Concert performed jointly with Southwell Choral Society in Southwell Minster on 7th May, we hope to round off a successful year with a short, four-week singing course. This would be an ideal opportunity for non-members to get a flavour of singing with the choir and perhaps help them to decide whether they might like to join us for our 2016-2017 season beginning in September. Provisional dates for the short course are 18th May, 1st, 8th and 15th June. It will be informal and fun, culminating in a small concert for family and friends on the last evening. Guy Turner, our Musical Director, will be in charge and the sessions will take place at Carnarvon Primary School, Nursery Road, Bingham NG13 8EH from 7.15 to 9.30 pm. The total cost will be £20 per person. If you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Janet Chapman on 0115 9332834.

Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir is one of a handful of original colliery

male voice choirs surviving in the country. No stranger to prestigious venues such as the Royal Concert Hall and Albert Hall in Nottingham, Derby Cathedral and the Royal Albert Hall in London, the choir is equally at home in more modest settings. We especially enjoy the intimacy that promotes a very real emotional connection between choristers and audience - as well as allowing a sense of fun to develop at the appropriate moment! We delight in helping local charities raise much needed funds for their own needs. The choir has a very busy 2016 and in the next couple of months will be performing at: Alfreton Grange Arts College (21 May); Belper Arts Festival (St Peter’s Church 28 May); St Mary’s Church, Eastwood (5 June) with guests Braintree Male Voice Choir. Visit the web site at www.ecmvc.org – and come along and give us a try – new members always welcome!

Flash Bang Wallop!

Musicians get to bang on their own bass drum A year of fund-raising has enabled West Bridgfordbased Nottingham Concert Band to buy its own bass drum. The instrument was put through its paces on Saturday during a concert in Gedling’s All Hallows Church. ‘The concert was called A Splash of Spring Colour so we had great fun choosing a colour-themed programme,’ says Music Director Robert Parker. ‘And, to mark the drum’s debut, we played a medley from the musical Half a Sixpence. Remember the line ‘bang it on the big bass drum’ from Flash Bang Wallop? Well, the audience did!’ Nottingham Concert Band’s ‘drum fund’ was supported by Notts County Councillors Liz Plant and Gordon Wheeler, who both made donations from their Divisional Fund allowances. Now in its 25th year, Nottingham Concert Band is an independent community wind-band comprising sixty or so adult members across woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Rehearsals are held weekly in West Bridgford and enquiries about membership and concerts are always welcome call Jeff or Jill on 01949 860126, e-mail music@ nottinghamconcertband.org or log-on to www. nottinghamconcertband.org

Easylink – making the City more accessible! Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have launched a new and accessible network of Easylink buses for people who may struggle using existing local bus and tram services. Easylink is operated by Nottingham C o m m u n i t y Transport and provides a door to door service, from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday, travelling anywhere up to ten miles from Nottingham city centre. Fully wheelchair accessible buses allow passengers to get to the shops, leisure activities, visit friends, medical appointments or anywhere else they want to go. Easylink buses offer: • Regular, fully-trained and friendly drivers who can help passengers on and off the vehicle and help carry any shopping to their door. • Brand new fully wheelchair accessible vehicles with a rear lift and space for up to two wheelchairs as well as up to eight conventional seats. • Low-cost travel for concession card holders and free travel for their escort or companion if they need one. • The ability to book a journey up to seven days in advance for a one-off trip, six weeks in advance for regular journeys or three months in advance for a trip to a medical appointment. All people need to do to make use of the service is register with Nottingham Community Transport. Unless they already have a Nottingham City Council Mobility Citycard concession card or Nottinghamshire County Council Disabled Concessionary pass then they are automatically a member of the Easylink scheme. When a passenger books a trip they will be given an exact price for that door-to-door to journey. Journeys can be booked by phone, text or email.

SKN Heritage Museum is more than a museum. It’s a unique organisation dedicated to commemorating and celebrating the Caribbean contribution to life in Nottingham. History and heritage isn’t only found in the pages of a book or in a museum, it’s about our lives, the things we do everyday, the objects we use and treasure and the traditions and values we hold dear. Through a range of exhibitions and events the SKN Heritage Museum brings to life the history of Nottingham’s Caribbean culture. The museum is about the lives of people, ordinary people with extraordinary stories. With your help, we want to tell these stories. We are inviting volunteers to participate and contribute to the work of our museum, discovering and sharing Caribbean history, heritage and culture in fun, exciting and original ways. You don’t need any experience or qualifications, just a willingness to learn. Who knows? It could even be the first step in an exciting new career. Whether you want to help us with research and documentation, or simply have a story or artefact you think needs sharing, please get in touch with us at sknheritagemuseum@outlook.com, or call us on 07469 189550.

Bishop Paul visits National Church of England Academy

In March we were pleased to welcome Bishop Paul of Southwell and Nottingham Diocese to our academy. They day started with an opportunity for him to pray with members of staff before having a tour of the academy with Fran and Nathan, our current Head Girl and Boy. Bishop Paul spent time in three different Religious Studies lessons. Students enjoyed questioning him on a variety of topics related to their programmes of study. Worcester House listened to Bishop Paul talk about wisdom and learning during their assembly in which one of the students had his shoes polished by him as an example of how we must put our wisdom and knowledge to effective use. Bishop Paul also met with a small group of students from Years 7 to 12 to learn more about our academy and to give them an opportunity to learn more about him and his work within our diocese. The visit ended with lunch in Archies, our dining room, to allow him to taste our school meals while chatting to members of the school and house councils. It was a pleasure to show Bishop Paul what daily life is like at our academy.

In January 25 sixth form students travelled down to London to spend an afternoon at the Houses of Parliament. The students had the opportunity to watch the debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and observe parliament in action. After a tour of the Palace of Westminster they took part in an organised workshop where they engaged in a very lively debate about the processes of government and topical political issues with a representative standing in on behalf of local MP Mark Spencer. The students were very vocal and active in discussion and took full advantage of the opportunity to raise issues and questions of their own. The students were impressive in their contributions and were outstanding ambassadors for the Academy.

Falcan ASC News The Mighty Holgate Academy Wins DALP Inter-Academy Quiz

The DALP Annual Inter-Academy Quiz was held at Retford Oaks Academy in March. A group of 21 Holgate students took on the challenge of the other 4 DALP secondary Academies; The National Academy, Tuxford Academy, East Leake Academy and Retford Oaks Academy. Answering questions on a range of diverse subjects such as; Disney films, astronomy and identification of painting, Holgate blasted their way up the score board to finish for lunch in first place. The quiz continued for 3 more rounds in the afternoon. Team Holgate embraced the challenge and extended their lead on the score board and achieved final victory! Arriving back at school there was just enough time to take some victory photos and to place our trophy in the trophy cabinet in the main reception. All of our students – both on the quiz teams and in the audience supporting – were a credit to the school. We are all very proud of them!

Earlier this year 21 Falcon swimmers took part in the Nottinghamshire County Championships. Swimmers aim to get the qualifying times for these championships, then they aim for Midland and National times (times are gained from licensed open meets and club time trials). This year for the first year the Nottinghamshire County ASA Championships have been held at the Harvey Hadden Sports Village and Watermeadows Swimming and Fitness Complex. The Nottinghamshire ASA County Championships swimmers are competing for top three podium places to win medals/trophies, top six (watermeadows) top eight (harvey hadden) are finalist places. Falcon ASC won 50 top eight places during the County Championships, with Tom Howarth the 50m Breaststroke County Champion and Amelia Sale the 100m Backstroke County Champion 2016. We would like to say a massive well done to all the swimmers who took part.

eview: Deadpool R ny Title?! n u P A ? g tin You Expec e r e W t a h W The sown up mouth job has been ripped off, the badass blood masking suit has been put on, and finally we can all say: the merc with the mouth has officially and marvellously been put onto the big screens. The story of Deadpool is an incredibly simple one. When it comes down to it this film is just a good ol’ story of love and revenge, but with a Chimichanga flavoured twist. The simplicity of the story is in no way a bad point for this movie. The plot works perfectly by giving Deadpool a vehicle to exhibit just why he is such a beloved character. It puts him in plenty of situations where Deadpool’s special kind of brutality and quipage shines. And boy does it shine brightly. But it wouldn’t be any fun seeing Deadpool strut his stuff if the guy playing him wasn’t the right fit. Thankfully there was never even a whisper of an issue with Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the merc with the mouth. He was born to play Deadpool (properly, we’re all looking at you X Men Origins: Wolverine). Reynolds really does the character justice, getting the physicality spot as well as the genuine nature of the character. In the wrong hands, Deadpool could have come across as a stupid, gun toting, potty mouthed idiot. Don’t get me wrong, he still is a stupid, gun toting, potty mouthed idiot, but a real, loveable one thanks to Reynolds’ inherent charm and charisma. Amazingly faithful interpretation of beloved characters aside, this film is just incredibly good fun and hilarious. From the smart use of the opening credits, you know you are in for a ride full of laughs. From slapstick to incredibly crude to talking straight to the audience, Deadpools arsenal of comedic weaponry is both vast and highly effective. The jokes come thick and fast, full of self-deprecating humour, as Deadpool pokes fun at the superhero world in general. This film is one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a while.

The action is stylish, fluid and brutal from the outset and it doesn’t let up throughout the film. Taking full advantage of the 15 age certificate Deadpool doesn’t even hint at holding back, with moments of gore that will force your mouth open in both shock and laughter at how insanely cool what just happened was. Overall this film is a blast. From start to finish you are cracking up with laughter, and when you’re not giggling like a five year old at the latest inventive spin on trash talk, you are left eyes wide open at just how cool and badass they have made Deadpool as he puts down a ridiculous amount of fools. One of the best adaptations of a character I may have ever seen, from design to writing to acting, and one of the best superhero films I have ever seen. Deadpool = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 18)
