In the run-up to the centenary of the Womens Institute, more and more women are being inspired to join. As the National Chair of the WI said recently, “Anything and everything is possible with our amazing movement. Everyone is different and I’m delighted that there are as many styles of WI as there are members.” Like everything else the WI is and can be what you want it to be. There are opportunities to: socialise; learn new skills and be open to new ideas; develop yourself and believe you can achieve; tackle local, national and environmental issues. Locally there are a number of new and established WIs. Watnall, Leenside (Hucknall), Nuthall and District and Eastwood and Brinsley are established yet forward looking WIs whereas Newstead and Bestwood are relatively new WIs. But the one thing they have in common is that they are part of the WI, Inspiring Women. For further details of a WI near you ring 01636 673550.

The Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass band played in the recent Butlins Mineworkers National Open Brass Band Festival. This event is one of the largest contests in the country and is held at Butlins Skegness. This year’s event saw no less than 102 bands register to take part in this prestigious event. Hucknall and Linby who play in the third section of the
national brass band grading system played against 15 other bands from across the country. Although not in the prizes, the band were praised for the quality of music in their performance. They were judged in 7th place. A band spokesman said: "The weekend had been a valuable experience for the band both musically and also the bonding of the young players in the social activities provided.” The band get straight back into work on their next contest piece for the National Regional Heats which are held at Bedworth in March. A message..
Christmas may be long forgotten, but don’t be surprised if you are still hearing bells in the air.
That’s us busily fastening jingling alarms to people’s handbags free-of-charge, following a number of shoppers falling foul ..from Insp of pick pockets in the Giltbrook Charles Jardine and Eastwood South areas. These quirky but effective crime prevention devices link your bag to your clothing so that if someone tries to steal your bag the bells sound. We have also been supplying free shed alarms and signage to victims of theft and burglary. Be vigilant against this, often opportunistic, type of crime. Many people are diligent with the security of their homes but then forget about the property of value in their outbuildings. Tools, gardening equipment and bicycles are all hot property for thieves wanting to make a quick quid. Be aware that we are continuing to run speed camera operations in the coming months in Kimberley, Nuthall and Brinsley. Stick to the speed limit and you’ll have nothing to worry about. I’d also like to commend the staff at Eastwood Youth Centre, in Mansfield Road, for their efforts to provide afterschool, weekend and holiday activities for our young residents. The centre is attracting more than 90 young people to facilities during the week. It’s encouraging to hear about kids playing rather than playing up.
Two of my officers showed their commitment to the cause on Thursday 1 March 2012 when, off-duty and on their way home from work, saw a suspicious vehicle. Following a conversation with the occupants they called in their on-duty colleagues and the car was seized. The 20-year-old female motorist was reported for summons for driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence or insurance. This is a great example of how being a police officer is not just an occupation for most of us, it’s a way of life.
We recently asked the public to help direct our policing efforts by completing an online Neighbourhood Policing Survey. This can influence our work for the next three months and help us tackle any specific issues or concerns. Visit www.neighbourhoodprioritysurvey.co.uk and get typing. Neighbourhood Watch is also an easy and convenient way to find out what is happening in your area. It also provides crime prevention advice and features new and exciting initiatives promoting safety and wellbeing within the community. To get involved in your local scheme visit www.eastwoodneighbourhoodwatch.co.uk
business & IT Community fund pot up for grabs for Nottinghamshire residents Local communities across Nottinghamshire needing a helping hand to fund small projects, activities or improvements in their area could be entitled to a share of an annual £10,000 funding pot held by their local County Councillor. The Councillor’s Division Fund aims to benefit organisations, groups or individuals which are active in their community for one-off causes and the councillor decides which schemes in their ward should get a contribution. Recent grants include £250 for a Christmas party for local residents at a community centre, £1,000 to replace a charity shop’s glass frontage and £500 for an allotment group to develop a wild flower area. County Councillors are only able to use their fund for causes within their ward. People wishing to put forward a request for a Councillors Division Fund grant should contact their local County Councillor whose contact details are available by visiting the Council’s website at www.nottinghamshire. gov.ukor by telephoning the authority on 08449 80 80 80.

PARALYMPIC HOPEFUL UNVEILS NEW-LOOK YOUTH GYM Team GB Paralympic hopeful, Simon Wilson officially unveiled Kimberley Leisure Centre’s new-look youth gym in March following an impressive £53,000 makeover to make the facility more accessible for disabled users. The Kimberley-based wheelchair fencing athlete joined the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Cllr Jacky Williams; Nottinghamshire County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Phillip Owen; local borough and county councillors; and pupils from Foxwood School at a special ceremony to officially open the much improved facility. The equipment, based around an interactive wall, uses audio visual effects and a control panel which allows the children to team up with each other or play against the computer. There is also hydraulic resistance equipment which works with children to support them whilst they exercise, toning all the major muscles groups and are safer and easier to use. Finally, the new dance mats help improve mobility and coordination and can be used by up to six people at the same time so friends can compete against each other in individual or team challenges. Broxtowe Borough Council carried out the improvements after receiving £48,060 of funding from Nottinghamshire County Council. County Councillor Phillip Owen said: “What came out of a consultation with 450 children

and young people attending special schools and parents and carers involved with our short breaks projects was that making leisure and sports activities more accessible for disabled children was a key priority for them. “These improvements will go a long way towards meeting this aim and we’re delighted to have been able to provide the funding to make the upgrade possible.” For more information about the Vibe Youth Gym, please contact Kimberley Leisure Centre on 0115 917 3366 or email kimberleylc@ broxtowe.gov.uk
NUTHALL & DISTRICT COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS Every second counts when someone has a serious illness and simple interventions can be performed by CFRs to save lives or prevent disability. First responders help provide emergency life saving care to patients. They are charities founded and run by volunteers who give up their spare time to attend appropriate 999 calls directed through EMAS control. The on-call CFR is dispatched by EMAS at the same time as an ambulance response and because by definition they live in the local area
where the incident has taken place, they can be first on the scene providing essential treatment, while ambulance crews travel to the scene. Nuthall & District Community First Responders area covers Nuthall, Kimberley, Eastwood, Selston and Hucknall. If you’re prepared to give up some of your spare time to provide an essential service to your community contact the scheme coordinator, Peter Winson at starcareservices@ntlworld.com or look on the East Midlands Ambulance Service web site for more details.

It’s back and it’s better than ever. Broxtowe Borough’s ‘Walk and Talk’ programme has just been announced and it’s bursting with over 100 walking opportunities throughout 2012. There is something for everyone from healthy walks and buggy walks to Nordic walking and walks after work. This year’s programme, which started in March, has got everything covered.
New for 2012 are the Nordic walks at Attenborough Nature Reserve. Learning to Nordic Walk helps participants get more benefit from the walks they do. It burns as many calories as running, but without impact on the joints. It also tones the arms, stomach and back muscles at the same time. It helps with stress and frustration as walkers use poles as part of the walking technique. For those who already enjoy a good walk, the Council is on the lookout for people willing
to become walk leaders, particularly in the south of the borough, to help guide others on walks. Full training is given and no previous experience is required, although a knowledge and love of the area would help. Broxtowe Borough’s Walk and Talk programme offers people of all ages and abilities the chance to join in a local health walk. All of the walks are led by qualified walk leaders who have a passion for walking and a keen interest in their local area and what’s more it’s free. There is no need to book and walkers don’t need any specialist equipment to take part. Walking is the perfect way to improve health. The benefits are endless and getting active can boost mental wellbeing, lift the mood, reduce tension and stress and increase energy. Any exercise can also help maintain a healthy body weight and ‘Walk and Talk’ is a great way to make new friends and get to know the local environment at the same time. For more information about Broxtowe Walk and Talk or to request a leaflet, please contact Julie Cole 0115 917 3711 or visit www. broxtowe.gov.uk/walking

Looking for a school for your daughter? Thinking about school for the first time?
Or as she gets older?
You want the best for your daughter but which school is right for her? Maybe it is time for you to look at a school which helps girls develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy.
Have you concerns about class sizes? Is your daughter getting overlooked? Do teachers really know what makes her tick? Are you pleased with the progress she is making?
Hollygirt School takes girls of all abilities. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. It is the unique environment of a girls’ school with small classes, where everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best out of each child, that really works. All girls are stretched and achieve more than they thought possible.
It is never too late to make a difference to your daughter’s education. Wouldn’t it be lovely to find a place where she is happy and achieving the best that she possibly can? In today’s straitened economic times, there is great value to be had from having a daughter in Hollygirt even for a couple of years, and rapid progress can be made to ensure a girl reaches her potential.
Indeed, girls can join Hollygirt at any age from 3 up to the start of Year 10, subject to a place being available. There is a school that perfectly suits your child...…maybe Hollygirt could be the one. Our next Open Events are on Thursday 3rd May, please see below for timings. If you can’t make it, just call us to arrange a convenient time for you to come in for a chat and a look around. We look forward to seeing you.

The Comforts of Life by Gloria Morgan
I have just had a new bathroom installed in my house. It is the crown jewel in this 137-year old cottage and this morning I enjoyed my first luxurious soak in the tub after a month of nipping round to the neighbours for a quick shower or managing with a comprehensive wash in the small basin in the upstairs loo with hardly space to turn round and the soap constantly flopping overboard onto the floor.
in turns to enjoy their weekly dip, with a good old scrub of carbolic soap.
The dog came to visit me in my steamy splendour. Like all dogs, she happily lacks any sense of modesty and no locks are ever turned against her in my house. She loves soapsuds and approaches them with the same sense of wonder as she does snow, fascinated by the way they melt on her tongue before she can swallow them. She has actually been known to eat soap, which I discourage. She is an inveterate scavenger and works on the principle of eat it first and wonder what it was afterwards.
I bumped into Joseph Shaw’s grandson the other day on Newdigate Street, when I was walking the dog. We commented on the usual daily snarlup of traffic approaching the school. He told me that when he was a small boy he could amuse himself for hours at his grandmother’s house at the bottom of Newdigate Street, peering out of the window to see if he could spot a car coming along the main road!
As I reclined at my ease, admiring the shiny new taps and state-of-the art shower, I pondered – as I so often do – upon what the people who lived here before me would have made of my alterations. Originally, this end of the downstairs back addition, which is only one brick thick and without a right-angle to its name, was an outhouse. My gleaming bath occupies what was the washhouse and the family stored their coal where my glistening new loo now resides. Bath night for them was a steam-up of multiple kettles on the hob and the kitchen copper going like a witch’s brew. The tin bath was brought indoors from its nail in the wall on the yard and placed snug on the hearthrug in front of the fire. They took it
When Joseph Shaw built my house in 1875 he didn’t even consider including a bathroom. He bought this plot of land and the one adjoining from William Donnelley for the sum of 85 pounds three shillings and fourpence. Not being a literate man, he signed the deal with a cross.
A car at the door and constant hot running water – I wonder what the residents of Kimberley will take for granted as the basic comforts of life in another hundred years’ time?

The Lazy Gardener.... gets down and dirty
As I explained in the last edition I am at best a reluctant gardener, however I harbour romantic notions of tiptoeing through the veggie beds picking plump cabbages and lovely comedy shaped carrots....so we have dedicated a third of our garden over to growing our own food. Using offcuts of tanalised decking and other odds and sods of wood that we found we have fashioned four small raised beds. Digging the soil over and sieving the pebbles out was the best upper body workout I have had in ages. After covering with heavy duty polythene to warm the soil (advice from a library book) we are ready to plan exactly what to grow. Sarah Mulholland, a Grow Your Own enthusiast whose partner discovered allotmenting in his late thirties and now runs a small veg box scheme; Red Earth Organics (01636 812105) has kindly offered the following advice on picking seeds; “Seed buying can be confusing. There are hybrid or heritage seeds, organic and non-oganic. Put simply, hybrids are developed by crossing two different plants from the same family but with different qualities like colour, size or flavour. Heritage (or heirloom) seeds come from plants that were grown historically but have not been used in modern agriculture on a large scale. Heritage plants can be selected for their ability to grow in specific soil or because the flavour or appearance is appealing. From experience I can recommend the following heritage crops: Tomatoes - Brandywine and Ivoty Egg Beans - Cosse Violette Lettuce - Marvel of 4 Seasons and Black Seeded Simpson Hybrids are widely available and tend to assure reasonably certain results, predictable crops and familiar flavours, whereas heritage can give less uniform results but offer unusual flavours, colours and variety. By checking the preferred conditions of heritage you can optimise yield by selecting seeds best suited to
your soil and weather. Heritage fruit and vegetables can be relatively easy to grow and by doing so you are also helping to preserve the gene pool and prevent monoculturism. Do be prepared for mixed results. That is both the joy and the frustration of moving from the staple hybrid seeds available everywhere and the delight in discovering a new lettuce, an unfamiliar tomato or beetroot easily outweighs the frustration of a seed batch that does not flourish as you hoped.” WOW! I had no idea....
In my dreams!!! With raised beds it is better for the soil to rotate crops on a four year cycle and also to grow similar crops in each bed. So we will have carrots, parsnips & celeriac in one bed, kale, calabrese, radish and rocket in another, spinach, swiss chard beetroot and lettuce together and french beans and peas in the last bed. We are growing potatoes in a special grower and plan to use grow bags for tomatoes. After hearing what Sarah had to say about seeds I am going to try and grow some heritage crops as well as hybrids and report back. As I type there is snow on the ground so all work has stopped and we are doing plenty of research using library books and the internet to plan the various types of each vegetable we plan to buy. To read more of Sarah’s guidance on seed types go to www.redearthorganics. co.uk/news.asp?Article=88 © Ali Wale

LOVELY LAMB!
Lamb is a tasty and versatile meat. Here are three recipes using different cuts, all easy, delicious and inexpensive. Enjoy!
MOUSSAKA
500g minced lamb 2 tbsp olive oil (plus oil for brushing) 2 aubergines (500g) - sliced 1 onion - sliced 2 garlic - finely chopped 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 tsp cinnamon red wine - splash 50g butter, 30g flour & 350ml milk 1 egg - beaten 100g grated cheese (cheddar or parmesan) nutmeg - grated salt & pepper method Pre-heat oven to 200°C. Brush augergine slices both sides with olive oil and place on a large baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins then turn and bake for another 10 mins. They should be soft and golden brown. Meanwhile - gently fry the onion and garlic til soft. Turn heat up and add the lamb. Break up and brown. Then add the cinnamon and red wine - boil til liquid is absorbed. Add tinned tomatoes and season to taste. Simmer gently for 20 mins while you make the white sauce. In a small pan melt butter - add flour and stir for a minute. Remove from heat and gradually stir in milk. Over a medium heat stir until the sauce is smooth and thick. Add 2/3 of the cheese and 1 tsp grated nutmeg. Leave to cool slightly while you assemble to dish. Grease an ovenproof dish and place a layer of aubergine slices on the bottom. Pour over the lamb sauce and top with another layer of aubergines. Then beat the egg into the white sauce. Pour over the top of the dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake for 45 mins in oven.
Lamb and Spinach Curry
This recipe is based on a dish from a book called “Curry”. 3 tbsp sunflower oil 300g boneless lamb leg steaks - cubed 350g bag spinach 2 x onions - chopped 1 x garlic clove - crushed 400g tin tomatoes 1 tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin seeds salt to taste method Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onions until soft. Add garlic, tomatoes, chilli, cumin seeds, turmeric and lamb. Cover and cook gently for 40 mins. Meanwhile wash spinach and place in a pan until wilted. Drain and once cooled, chop. After 40 mins add spinach to the pan. Remove lid and simmer for a further few minutes until you have a thick sauce. Check for seasoning and serve with rice.
Moroccan Meatballs 500g minced lamb 1 x onion - finely chopped 2 x garlic cloves - finely chopped 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp cinnamon breadcrumbs - good handful 1 egg 1 dsp tomato puree salt & pepper method Either use a food processor or manually mix the ingredients until well blended. Roll into walnut size balls and shallow fry until browned all over. Delicious with couscous and tomato sauce or stuffed in pitta bread with coleslaw.

LAWRENCE PORTRAIT CONSIDERED FOR NATIONAL EXHIBITION A unique soil painting of the writer D.H. Lawrence currently on display at Eastwood’s D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre has been accepted to the second round of the selection process for the UK’s leading portrait exhibition, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters Open Exhibition 2012. The Royal Society of Portrait Painters Open Exhibition will bring together 227 portraits selected from submissions from all over the world and it is hoped the breathtaking portrait of the Eastwood-born writer, entitled ‘Lawrence… From the land of my forefathers’, will be amongst the select exhibits. Local artist Adrian Lloyd (pictured left with the portrait), whose grandfather knew D.H. Lawrence, specialises in creating ancestral earth portraits using soil samples collected from sites of personal or historic interest. The soil is mixed with a binding agent before being applied in layers to create a unique link with the subject. The large-scale portrait, which measures three feet wide and four feet high, was created using samples of earth taken from 10 local sites directly linked to the writer’s past, including D. H. Lawrence Heritage Centre, the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum and three other family homes. Other samples were collected from Brinsley Colliery where his father Arthur worked, the Greasley School he attended and the home of his grandparents at the Quarry Cottage, Brinsley. The stunning representation of Lawrence portrays the writer a year before his death in 1930.
